Just do the assignments. Do well on pop quizzes. Labs were difficult, TA's didn't help to much with programs. Two tests (midterm & Final), two group assignments, and presentation for second group assignment. He was organized, but TA's were idiots. websites given were bad in my opinion.
I took the session B (7w , online). The assignments were extremely clear and explained step by step on BB; there's one discussion each week and five written assignments. There's also tons of lecture videos and readings, but YOU DON'T have to read them to complete the homework (or get an A). The final is 50 MC. Stupidly easy if you manage your time
I took his regular and honors class. I would say I truly got a lot from his honors project. I learned a lot more from the honors class than his regular class. He expects you to watch all of the online videos (might just be for the hybrid class) and tests you on it. He teaches you the material, but not necessarily gives you the motivation to learn.
I took sustainable cities with him. He's okay. SOS111 isn't very challenging to begin with, just do the assignments and study for the two exams, midterm and the final. His lectures are interesting compared to Redman's which are very bland. I learned a lot, but it was overall a very easy class.
The professor is so passionate about the subject, and he provides good information, but the class was so dry and way too lengthy. It didn't help that PUP190 is a 500+ student course; it did not allow for a good learning experience and left much to be desired. I would, however, take a course with Hagen again if in another, smaller class setting.
I took this class online as a session B, it would require a lot of research into different topics of Sustainability but make sure you do the assignments the day before its due and know someone whos taking the same class so that you guys can take the final exam together.
Almost every week you have a 3 to 4 page paper due along with a 300 word discussion board. The subjects of the papers are rather boring and the discussion boards are ok. You don't really need the book. You don't always have to listen to the lectures and read the assigned readings. Generally an easy class, just really boring...
I took the online course and it was well designed with a lot of interesting material. There are a lot of lectures to watch; but I enjoyed most along with the videos. This seems to be a solid introductory course to sustainability and its applicability to cities - I recommend it. One forum and response and one 1000 word paper every week. 50 q final.
This class should be an easy A. Can't really speak to the quality of the professor as I never watched a single lecture, workload is decently heavy as you'll have to write 5 1000 word essays. Just stay on topic and address the questions and you should get 100% on all of them. Final is all multiple choice on terms used throughout the semester.
If you do what is asked of you, you will achieve an easy A. The workload is very reasonable and not overbearing.
Super easy assignments and super easy final but the amount of readings and lectures were overwhelming. and the fact he did even have his own lectures was kind of annoying.
The most boring lectures I have ever experienced. His thick accent doesn't help either. A blow off which is a shame cause the subject is really interesting yet the class is dull.
Lot of homework. You may not need the book & that depends how well you research on your own. Would take another class from him. Final was not to bad. The TA's will make it or break it I suspect, depending on how they grade. He was extremely responsive to email and genuinely concerned that you are learning the material and have what you need.
He is so sweet and genuinely passionate about the material. Always smiling and approachable. He is genuinely willing to help with any issues. The class is not difficult, but is very informative.
The online class had a lot of lectures, but they were interesting enough. Profesor Hagen was clear about his expectations for the course and provided a detailed study guide for the final exam.
I got a 95 in the class with almost no effort. Grades are based off weekly discussion posts, 4-5 "essays" that are less than 1000 words, and a final exam. Overall an easy course. I would take it again. I really didn't use the textbook until it came time for the final. The topic was interesting and keeps you engaged.
kind of a think German accent but overall interesting lectures on basic sustainability and urban planning
Easiest class I have ever taken. Didn't need the book and didn't watch a single lecture. There are weekly discussion posts that are based on your opinion and 3 papers total. Papers are really easy and usually a summary of a video. Take this class.
Prof Hagen seems like avery nice guy, but the class was so huge there wasn't any personal interactions. Lectures were ok, but could be pretty boring. Didn't touch the textbook except for a few terms to study. Midterm and final were easy, just use the study guide. 3 big papers, one group project, each was graded very generously. Easy class honestly.
Professor Hagen is really awesome. The class is in a huge lecture hall so there is very little time for a one on one with him but in the honors' recitation he was very helpful & knowledgeable. He's always willing to answer questions or just talk about sustainability in the real world. The grade you get will depend on your TA, not the professor.
Lectures can be pretty boring and the group project at the end can break your grade. It really depends on the TAs if you will get a good grade. He can be difficult to understand during lectures and 90% of the class is working on something else during them. Mid-term and final are hard if you haven't read the book word for word.
Prof Hagen is a nice person to take with. I am taking online courses, he replies email very fast. If you explain clearly he will definately give you a chance to take you test and give some score back to your grade. I really recommend you guys to take the class with him.
Hagen does a good job of laying out his expectations, doesn't answer emails often but the class and assignments are self-explanatory. Didn't use textbook and you don't need to until the final when terms pop up that you haven't heard of. Do all your assignments (a discussion post a week, with about 5 total papers) and test is open note, you'll be ok
Very easy and fun course. Only 5 papers that asked for a minimum 1000 words and a discussion post due every week. Textbook was not needed at all, only for the final exam which is open book but it may not be needed as you are provided a study guide that lists what that will appear on the exam. If you look up the terms yourself its easy to complete.
Dr. Hagen's class is very straightforward. Discussions, responses and roughly 1000 word papers due each week. He wasn't very critical of your writing if he could see you were getting the main idea of the topic. Wasn't marking off for grammar and other small mistakes. Wants you to pass! Book really wan't needed, either. Take his class!
Hagen is a great prof for SOS111/PUP 190! Class is super engaging/interesting while also being incredibly easy - only 2 tests, midterm/final, and they are straight out of the book. 4 homework assignments that, if you turn them in and tried, you get a 100. Take him for the honors recitation if you can! Super cool professor to work with!
This was an online course for section B. There are about 5 writing assignments that is due every week along with discussion board. Discussion board, need to respond to professor post and a student post. Since this is a one month class there are heavy lectures that you should watch and read. Make sure to stay on top with work and fair grading.
Grade is based on DB, essays, and a final. You will typically get full points just for completing an assignment and you can find final answers online. Easy A and a very interesting class.
Super easy credit. Sadly the class is boring as h... . It gets really frustrated as there is a huge focus on problems and not enough focus on solutions. The lecture videos are of bad quality or over ten years old and you won't want to watch them. No worries, most of the final you can google or find flash cards online.
Professor Hagen has an accent, so it is a little hard to understand him at times, but his class is super easy. He isnt looking to fail anyone. If you show up and do the study guide for the midterm and final you will get a good grade in the class. He only make you come twice a week 3 times and the rest of the semester you only meet once a week
Very thick accent, but no fault of his. Class was great, and I learned a lot. Some of the stuff was extremely boring, but for the most part was a good course.
Incredibly easy class. Lectures were very boring so I didn't ever pay attention. All of the papers can easily be done the night before for a 100% including the 12-14 page group paper. Didn't study for the midterm or a final and my test average was an 83%. Once an entire lecture was about how shade makes you feel cooler, so yeah.
SOS 111 was super easy, and Dr. Hagen is really interesting to listen to. Assignments are pretty easy (graded by TAs), and there were only two tests.
Turn in everything on time and you'll get an A. I took his Sustainable Cities class and it was easy and interesting. He takes attendances randomly, but it does count for credit. Group project at the end on the semester is the hardest part. Midterm and final are clear as long as you review the study guide.
Professor Hagen is great! As long as you put in a lot of effort, & do all the work he will give you a good grade! The class consists of five 1000 word essays, a weekly discussion post & 1 final exam consisting of 50 questions. I took the class online & I did not buy the textbook but ended up with an A+. Extra credit is not offered, but isnt needed.
I am so passionate for sustainability, but boy was this class a bore. It was incredibly difficult to pay attention, but they took attendance nearly every class so you have to go. Don't buy the textbook. Just lookup the quizlets for the midterm and final & you're set - they're each 50 questions and easy. Bring something to entertain you during class
Only read the textbook right before tests for terms, really isn't necessary. Random checks for attendance, so make sure you show up because they're grades. Final assignment is an extensive group project. Normal homework assignments are super easy. Lectures are pretty much useless and not really used for the tests.
Minimal effort. Sometimes I would forget I had this class. Honestly, it was really boring, which is a shame because you can tell he's very smart and very passionate. The subject matter is interesting, but the class itself is really boring. SUPER easy A though
This was by far the easiest class I have ever taken. It was a session A class so it only lasted 7 weeks. The entire course is graded on a paper and a discussion board due each week (as long as you meet the word count you will get a 100) and ends with an online final that is completely open notes. If you're looking for an easy A, take this class.
SOS 111 was a simple class, and Dr. Hagen is really interesting to listen to. Assignments are pretty easy (graded by TAs), and there was only one tests.
The class was pretty easy. There was a lot work with a 1 page paper every week and a quiz. It wasn't too hard but it felt like a lot of work.
LOVED this class and professor. This is the reason I added Sustainability as a minor. The textbook used is written by another ASU prof and I enjoyed it. I got put into this class as the suggestion of my advisor and I'm so happy I did! It's reasonably easy if you need credit, and informative if you love the subject. Can't say enough good things!
Took Professor Hagan for Sustainable Cities online and it has been an enjoyable class. Discussion boards every week, start on Thursday, 400 words due & responses due to other students by Sundays, 200 words. 3 papers due in one term, each worth 15 points. Easily laid out of what he expects. Lecture videos are long, drawn out, but packed full of info
4-6 hours of lectures that were difficult to understand and not stimulating. He took and interesting subject and made it hard to follow. But, if you google the topics each week, you can get an easy A.
As a sustainability major, his lectures are informative and always keep my interest. If you have no interest in sustainability or environmentalism, you will NOT like his classes. Weekly discussion board posts are required and a few papers to write, only one test, and that's the final. Overall, he's very knowledgeable and is always willing to help.
Class was taken online in session C. The textbook is useful for the final exam and for writing the 3 papers worth 45% of your grade. Don't need to watch videos necessarily just read the key topics/words for discussion post. Class can be informative even if you don't take it seriously. Class was pretty straightforward but grading takes awhile.
The amount of content is overwhelming for Section B and class pace is VERY fast. 4-6 hours of video lectures per week. 400+ word discussion board post every week. 1000+ word essay every two weeks (total of 3). Although sustainability is an interesting topic, Proffs lectures are boring and not easy to understand. Easy grader for hw assignments.
This course was an easy A if you worked for it but the grading was a bit tough on papers. I missed the next letter grade by one point and if the grading on essays were a bit different I think results would show otherwise for a lot of students. Just make sure to triple check everything before turning it in. Other than that, you'll do fine.
Cons: His classes are very lecture heavy and his accent was difficult to understand at the beginning of the semester. Group project was a pain to deal with and was heavily weighed. Pros: He is a very caring professor, he gives study guides for both the midterm and final, which make it easier to study. Exams are multiple choice.
The class was very informational! An essay every week. Discussion board participation.
Really easy online course. Weekly initial post of 400 words and two 200 word responses. Three essays throughout the course. Grading was very slow, which resulted in me writing essays without feedback from previous ones. Exam at the end. I felt like watching the slides/video post were sufficient enough. In my opinion you do not need to buy the book.
The lectures will put you to sleep, but other than that I enjoyed this class so much! The papers are on interesting topics, overall a pretty solid, easy course. I can genuinely say I really liked this class, and sustainability isn't even my major. 10/10 would take again.
This class was very interesting and it focuses a lot on what you are doing in your life. The class does have an intense workload if you do Session A/B, but you get the hang of it. A few longer papers and discussion posts frequently due. If you manage your time, you will do fine.
Discussion post and two responses every week, hit the word count and you'll get a perfect score. Three papers, but are graded by TAs who don't respond to emails. Final is super specific so know the terms ahead of time. Textbook is not needed do not waste your money.
Okay, the material in this class is sometimes interesting, however, the way in which both professors talk is quite draining. It makes you want to fall asleep. Nonetheless, nothing in this class is too difficult. As long as you know how to read instructions, you should pass
This class was a fairly easy A. Discussion posts every week with at least 2 replies to other students. Discussion posts are at least 350 words and replies are at least 150. 3 big essays , 1500+ words and a final. The final is all multiple choice and is timed. 50 questions but is opened book. Lots of reading and videos per week but is manageable.
Graded on weekly discussion posts, 3 papers, and the final exam. Took forever to receive grade and feedback back on papers (weeks) making it impossible to make improvements before the next was due. Final is multiple choice but no quizzes throughout the course to practice/get a feel for the types of questions. I never opened my book.
Great class. Really interesting. Don't be afraid to reach out for help if needed. It was an online class but i felt he cared.
Easy A. take online 7 week course. graded on a few papers, some discussion posts + final. do the discussion posts better than halfassed, full credit, papers need to be spot on, you have a few weeks to complete each one; takes a few hours to write. final matched study guide perfectly. Online lectures are long, but don't need to watch to pass easily
This course is straight forward. There are a total of seven discussion posts and only three papers overall. Discussion board posts are essential and simple to wright and the essays are relatively short. By following the provided grading rubrics will definitely give you an A in the course. The final is pretty easy, open notes, and multiple choice.
This class is fairly simple. If you're not interested in sustainability, it's kinda boring. Very history heavy. I didn't need the book for the class until it came to the open book, multiple choice exam, and for that I highly recommend getting the book. Easy grader if you follow rubric, but don't expect feedback. You just have to do the work to pass
SOS111 is awesome if youre interested in all the interconnected areas of climate change and how to mitigate its harmful effects. The material of the lectures is super entertaining (to me at least) and every now and then you get to hear him say awailable. Im really thinking about changing my major after taking this class.
Professor Hagen is one of the best Professors at ASU. He is very cool, highly educated, efficient and fully engaged in his subject. What I really appreciated, even more, is he is a deep holistic thinker and far from petty and doesn't nitpick your writing down to insignificant errors, like an over-enthusiastic amped up Professor would.
Our syllabus changed completely during the class, screwing me for the test. Suddenly instead of open book, it was learning 100 terms before the exam. Beware this professor, none of the assignments apply to what you are suppose to know.
AVOID! Super Disappointed after seeing the good reviews and I was genuinely excited about the topic. Weekly lectures are 2+ hours long. Grades papers based on his opinions, basically if agrees with your ideas you'll get a better grade. The only test is the final (20% of grade) which was on camera & decided in 5th wk to not make open book final.....
Great course with modules. Prompted overall knowledge of the concepts rather than testing readings during the module assignments. BUT. Final exam was the exact opposite AND was changed from open-book to closed-book in the middle of the class. The exam was structured as an open-book exam too. Idk if it was admin or the prof.
The class is based on discussion posts, written assignments, and a final exam which is no longer open-book after this semester due to ASU policies. His lectures can be heavy but the final is not that hard if you actually read the book! Never watched a single lecture, just read parts of the book, used study guide, and passed the final with a 41/50.
This professor is extremely organized and is very good about responding to emails. In order to do well in this class you have to make sure you turn in discussion posts and assignments on time. Also make sure to study for the final way in advance so that you can get a great grade.
His class was just okay, I took the class online and there were 4+ hours of lectures every week and additional reading and most of the time the lectures and reading had barely anything to do with the weekly discussions. I ended up not even listening to the lectures or reading the textbook and just did my own research.
There is really no reason to hate on this class. Keep in mind that you do have to make weekly video responses to discussion board prompts and respond to two people. However, all the assignments are easy to follow and have an extremely clear grading criteria. He was also understanding when I needed a little extra time to complete and assignment.
Easy A+. Lots of video discussion uploads, have a good internet connection. Final was curved. Extra credit at the end. Participate and you will pass.
Bjoern is literally the sweetest person ever. Super passionate about sustainability and urban planning. The class is pretty easy, but still interesting. He tells you exactly what he will be testing you on which helps a lot.
I had Prof Hagen for an accelerated online course. Every week there was approximately 5 hours of lectures to watch, so be prepared to watch a lot of lectures. He provides a study guide for every quiz and as long as you know all the terms on the study guide, you should be golden. Just follow all theassignment instructions and you should pass easy.
His lectures could be a little boring sometimes, but he knows his stuff and is very nice and loves questions. He has several TAs that help him since the classes are large and they are willing to help you with anything. This is a hybrid class, so it is up to you to get your work done because late work is penalized.
I am a psych major and took this class for gen ed credit but I am so glad I did. This class was definitely doable with out the book. I got 100% on all discussions, 90-100 on all mini essays, quiz average was 50% as still got an A based on how grades were weighed. Definitely recommend for easy gen ed credit. Prof. Hagen is extremely nice and caring
Professor Hagen is truly knowledgeable and passionate about sustainability. Lectures are long, but very interesting! The class is made up of lectures/readings, group discussion posts, a midterm, some micro-essays, and a final essay and exam. It sounds like a lot but it's spaced well and you are given all the tools you need to succeed. I enjoyed it!
In Dr. Hagen's class, there is plenty of homework, but almost all of it is graded by completion (and 70% of the grade is from homework, only 30% from tests.) He is available outside class for questions about class or help with anything else, but realistically the TAs are the ones grading almost everything. Get to know your TA and you're set!
He is very nice and is very accessible to discuss things. There are 2 discussion posts every other week (w/ replies in between) that have to be a 2+ minute video. There are only 2 exams and he gives a study guide for both. The topics and case studies are interesting and he presents them well. The final paper is 2k words, but u have 1 month to do it
Very nice prof. Fairly easy class and material. The only downside is that it was a lot of homework compared to other classes. Two weekly 2 minutes+ videos and four 200 word replies each Sunday. With two micro-essays and one large (5-7pg) final paper. It was nice to have a lot of other grades in besides tests. Also, attendance on zoom is graded.
LOTS of reading and lectures. Averages about 5 hours of lectures, 3 chapters, and 3 articles a week, not including supplementals. However, he's super nice and very accessible as a professor. Extremely accommodating too. But there is video style discussion posts every week that all professors require for this class so you can't get out of it.
I took his Sustainable Cities course online this semester at ASU. If you use the given study guide for the weekly quizzes, it would be very hard to not make an A /B. The textbook is a great resource that will contain a lot of the quiz material. He was super helpful and easy to get in contact with. Very much recommend taking any class taught by him.
There is a textbook you have to use for the course but it is not allowed for use on the tests. Very interesting class, I learned a lot. There is a lot of reading and lectures but they're easy to watch and read. Great course and instructor I definitely would recommend.
This class was hard, but worth it. Youll leave the class feeling like you actually learned something. Dont get overwhelmed the first week and just take it in and figure out what best works for you on which items to complete which days. It is a lot of reading however there are videos that go with the reading if you are struggling to get it.
Easy A. Every week there are lots of readings & viewings, but all I did was Google everything on the Study Guides quick. Just from that I was able to do the quizzes & discussion posts well. Don't buy the book, you don't need it. There are 2 micro-essays (350-500 words) & a final paper that take a bit longer, but that's the most work you'll do.
Great professor and really fun to listen to. Actually inspired me to care more about Sustainability and change the way I look at the world. The class only has a couple papers, a midterm, and a final which make up around half of the grade. The other half comes from the discussions with other students and the group project. Fun Easy A but informative
TONS of lectures and information to read/watch. I took this as an A session class and it was all I was doing for those 7 weeks. Nonstop. Quizzes were on Lockdown Browser, recorded. It was very lecture heavy. If that is something you are into, then take his course.
Two discussion board posts and a quiz each week. There was a lot of reading and lectures, but they're not necessary. Just look up the study guide terms in the textbook/online, and you're fine. There were two mini-essays and a final paper, but they were easy. You learn a lot in this class, so it's easy to write about stuff. Very clear expectations.
Took Sustainable Cities with Professor Hagen and then used him as my advisor for another class. He is very clear in his explanations and supportive of your success. He is one of the best professors I have had at ASU.
Not a lot of actual work just lots of reading and watching lectures. I learned a lot in this class and really enjoyed Professor Hagen. I always received good grades on my papers and discussion posts. You have to read and watch lectures to pass quizzes as they are lock down browser with no notes!
There are lectures that you should be watching, about 3 hours worth weekly and readings, but I don't do them. There are two seperate group assignments which have due dates on the same days and have different prompts. Yellowdig is pretty easy and it gets graded in the website. Two micro essays and one final paper.
Prof Hagen did a really great job. I took the course online sesh A. Had a closed book quiz (two chances), a YG post, and a group project video + response due each week. The group project was more a discussion with the same ppl every week. Two micro essays and then a final essay. Never bought the book. Interesting content. just read the ppts.
Dr. Hagen is very nice and definitely very accessible outside of class. If I ever emailed him or my TA, one of them definitely got back to me within a few hours. As the lectures involve hundreds of students, they're difficult to sit through sometimes. But as long as you do the discussion posts and the papers, it is fairly easy to get an A.
This class was super boring, and the topics were rather mundane. The professor was good though, and clearly is passionate about this topic. In general, the class is easy, but there are many writing assignments. If you don't like writing, would not recommend.
Prof Hagen is an incredible teacher and he is super passionate about sustainability. He definitely makes the class super fun. Overall the class consists of mandatory lectures and recitations, and 1-2 video recorded discussion posts each week. There are a total of four papers 2 are below 500 and 2 are 1000-2000. The midterm and final are super easy.
Attendance graded, but not mandatory. Homework usually due Sunday nights, but given a whole week. Homework involves discussion posts and a few papers. Initial post (video) due one week and replies (video or typed) due the next so harder to keep track. Pretty straightforward. Interesting topics. Midterm and final with lockdown browser.
Sustainable cities is a super interesting class and Hagen seemed really passionate and knowledgeable. The guest lecturers however were often extremely boring. Hagen had a lot of content available online - super helpful for reviewing for tests.
Great class, and great professor. The lectures are long to watch, but they are very helpful in creating a study guide for the quizzes. If you follow the study guides posted and make your own notes with it, the quizzes are an easy A. Reading is also really important, too but the material itself is not difficult. Overall great class and experience.
Seems to really care about the subject. A lot of reading & lectures, but the information is easy to retain. Study guide helps. Uses Yellowdig for student interaction which is easy to help grade. Extra credit available.
He is passionate. Weekly there's a YD discussion, discussion where you're required a 2+ min video & reply to a peer, 2-3 hrs lectures&video, reading, quiz on lockdown w webcam, 2 mini-essays bi-wkly, final paper outline & final paper w/ 2000 wrds. Wouldn't say this class is "easy". Its a bit of wrk but the material is straightforward&interesting.
He is very knowlegabl. Weekly YD, discussion & reply to peer w sources, 3hrs lec/video, reading, quiz lockdown/webcam, 2 mini-essays, final paper outline & final paper w/ 2000 wrds. Didn't know if quiz would be on lec or book, enough busy work to bring up grade. On time outline for hrs each week only allocated 1 hour for studying. Not realistic.
Easy A, just complete the readings (2-5 hours a week) and fill out the study guide. There are two attempts on each test (lockdown browser + webcam are used). Assignments are graded very fairly. The content is very enlightening and inspiring - as long as assignments are completed on time, you should not have to worry about the grade.
His lectures are so long and they are simply him lecturing to you, no participation from students. You have to take a recitation which is the biggest waste of time ever. He uses attendance sheets and you are graded on attendance. Would not recommend unless you want to sit in a hot lecture hall and listen to green environment architecture.
Course (Session B) is a little intimidating at first. Lots of readings and lectures (4-5 hours+ of lectures each week). Quizzes are open note/textbook. He is awesome with project & assignment grading. Extra credit offered. Final is short answer with multiple days to do it. Interesting material, just make sure you devote enough time each week!
Lots of lectures, but overall pretty straightforward class with clear expectations.
Good professor, definitely on of the better ones I have had. He and his TA staff all want you to succeed. One thing is he didn't have his discussion posts up on the canvas calender? Beware of missing those deadlines, super simple and easy though. Papers are the major assignments. Overall good class and professor.
It is very clear what is expected in this class. You just have to show up to class and recitation, do discussion posts, essays and two open book exam. Not a hard class if you keep up on the work. Lectures aren't that exciting but once you sign the attendance you can leave.
Hagen is clearly enthusiastic about what he teaches, but this class was graded oddly harshly. I was docked points on discussions without explanation, there is required attendance even for big lectures, and the exams have some questions which simply don't make sense.
He is a good professor. You make better connections with your TA than the professors. Sustainability or anything similar so it was harder for me but I think if you study and write your papers on time, you should be good!
1 canvas discussion post (1-2 minute video ~150 words), 1 YellowDig discussion post (100 words) with a reply (50 words) per week. 3 papers 2 exams ( midterm/final,75-minute time limit OPEN NOTE) I bought the 2nd edition of the textbook (~ $35) as opposed to ~$200 for the new 3rd edition. It was missing two chapters that but I got by! Soild class!
very good communication
overall, it is awesome.
Interesting lectures and the professor is passionate. Assignments aren't hard, discussion boards open for 2 weeks, Yellowdig also open for two weeks. Online, open note midterm and final exams. Final paper is writing about a hypothetical ideal sustainable city.
Prof Hagen was a great lecturer. I really love this topic, so I had fun in this class. I took this class at the height of the pandemic. june 2020 so this is me recalling how it went. His lectures are fun and his textbook was interesting, I even kept it after class was over.
Took his SOS111 class for a requirement. Professor Hagen is very passionate about what he teaches, but many of his students simply need a HU credit. The topic itself is interesting. Grading is based on which recitation TA you get (some hand out 100s, some strictly adhere to rubrics), so pray you get a good one. Wish I tried more in this class.
Clearly very passionate about what he teaches and everything was easy to comprehend. He uses TAs to grade your assignments. There is a lot of reading however and expect to dedicate some time to lecture videos.
Many people take this class for the sake of Humanities or social behavior credits and he is expecting us to give more time than the main classes. This class has recitation, yellowdig, recitation project, discussion board where you have to upload a flipping video of yourself and then you have to reply to the peer. I mean common give us a break.
I took this class because I had to for the requirement fairly easy however lectures are very boring and if you aren't passionate about this subject I recommend that you stick away from it the peer tutors grade everything and if they are a hard grader good luck because they can be very nit picky with it. However he really cares about this subject.
He is not a good lecturer, he did not engage the class at all. The material is interesting but his lectures made it boring. The course was very disorganized and many of the assignments seemed like they had nothing to do with the class. He also assigned a few group projects which were horrible.
This course is very rigourous. Lots of assignments including two huge papers about climate change. Incredibly boring if you don't care about the topic, like most people would. Yellowdig discussions are absurd. Only like 200 points for a post and it has to be a minimum of 100 words. Replies are even less points. You will come to not like this course
Hagen was awesome. My SOS111 experience wasn't. There's a semester-long group project; if stuck with the wrong people, your life will be VERY hard. Lots of assignments with lots of writing and discussions (including video responses). You do not need the textbook, but it can be helpful on some assignments. Brian Grant was a great TA.
This course as a 300 level was very difficult and had me feeling very burnt out at the end. His lectures are boring. 2 out of 7 quizzes tested on over 100 pages of the text ignoring other required lectures and videos for those weeks. Very unfair and set up for failure. Final is a 1000 word paper, after just doing a 1400 word paper a week prior.
This class is a lot of work for a 100 level class and the lectures are quite boring. Midterm and final are solely based off of vocabulary from his textbook (which can be found online cough cough), and there are no other tests/quizzes whatsoever. Semester-long group paper and two individual essays, which were somewhat annoying.
Bjoern is nice and an interesting lecturer. He gets a bad rap on here is because people who aren't interested in urban planning decide to do a class surrounding it. If you like the subject matter, take it. The class is reading and lecture heavy with online weekly lectures (I know people who didn't do them and were fine) - the content was good.
Looking for a low workload class to fulfill HU?...RUN!!! Weekly video discussion posts, weekly yellowdig posts, 3-4 chapters weekly textbook reading, 3-4 hours of weekly lectures, weekly quizes, and 3 written assignments including a 2000 word final paper. Bjoern seemed nice, but this class was entirely too much work for a lower division course.
This class just had too much work. I had about 5 assignments due every week and it just got worse when we started to write an 18-page group paper in the recitation part of the class. The tests are open note/open book so it was easy to manage a high grade. Make sure to complete all the assignments as they aren't hard just long. Lecture is required..
The teacher is amazing, he is enthusiastic and knowledgeable, BUT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CANT FIT IN A VERY HEAVY WORKLOAD, I made the mistake of taking this class for an ez general studies credit, It takes 2x the time my chem class, chem lab, and calc class did. This wouldn't be an issue if I had the time or was a sustainability major.
I would only recommend this class if you're genuinely passionate on the subject. Class had more work than all my other classes combined. There's a bi-weekly Yellowdig, weekly video discussion posts/replies, mandatory attendance, additional online lectures, 2 ind. papers, a 8-12pg long group paper, and additional assignments during recitations.
My main criticism is that the class is too work heavy. Two discussions due biweekly, two big research essays, a giant group project, a recitation that was treated like a second class period, etc. He's nice and the material is interesting but it was the work of 3 classes. Class size was 300+ so it's hard to ask him questions outside of lecture too.
This class was extremely homework heavy and had more work due than all of my other subjects combined. I had to take this class to complete my HU class requirement. Lectures are monotonous and attendance is mandatory. I would highly advise against it unless you're genuinely interested in the subject.
This class could be pretty demanding at times. His lectures were pretty monotonous, but the material was pretty interesting. The TAs grade pretty much everything, and they can also grade harshly, so be ready for that.
In the second half of the semester, 3/4 of the students in the class were not paying attention. Hagen seems like a nice guy but MAN is he boring. I hated this class, mostly because of the required attendance to a boring lecture at 4:30pm.
Overall, amazing class! Professor Hagen deeply cares about sustainability, and you can tell. I believe this class; however, could be even better if there was some consideration put into the assigned projects and assignments. I felt that many were unnecessarily complicated and could have been more relevant to the coursework.
Professor Hagen's class was graded on 5 video discussions, two papers, a yellowdig discussion, and two exams. Attendance was mandatory, but you don't need to pay attention to the lectures. There were 5 three-minute video discussions that you have to do some research on, but they are relatively easy. Overall an easy class to get a good grade in.
Interesting class structure. Initial video posts, responding and critiquing classmate's video posts, 7 quizzes, 2 essays, textbook is KEY to answering the study guide, key terms and topic videos are also important as well. Read the syllabus and keep tabs on your assignments and you will do more than fine. There's also extra credit.
Bjoern's class has a lot of work, but unstuck ai and the free textbook can help. Lectures are dry, but engaging with the content pays off. If you're interested in urban planning, it's worth the effort. Just be ready for some tough grading from the TAs.
Considering it was online, my only interaction with him was via email. He was always responsive and actively assisted me in finding an article when the ASU library couldn't access it. That said, this was a heavy course load. It is a lot of content in only 6.5 weeks. Be prepared to truly put in 20+ hours/week.
Quite a bit of reading for a 100-level class but otherwise a very interesting course. I got really into the material and it ended up helping me a lot with a couple of difficult upper level courses. Had a work injury during the term that I took this course, and he was very understanding.
His class was ok for what it was meant to teach. His lectures were very boring and were easy to get lost in. Most of his TAs do the work and grading. I still am not sure what exactly I learned that I haven't heard of before.
His class is pretty lecture heavy but they were interesting for the most part. You can tell he's passionate about what he's teaching which made it easier to pay attention too. He is really helpful and if he's busy he has so many TA's that can help you out. Easy A for sure.
Class was poorly set up and all over the place. Other classmates and I all agreed this is one of the worst classes we have taken with the most amount of work. He grades very strict but doesn't have clear rubrics or guidelines for assignments. Also makes you do group projects as an online class which is really hard.
The instructions for the assignments are a bit complicated and the lectures are not very engaging, but he's very kind if you need help and is always ready to answer questions. Use the provided study guides! You can usually find the info in the lecture slides or with a quick google search--there's really no need to buy the textbook.
Refused to change grades on submitted homework that was glitched out of the system, despite being turned in early, dropping my grade a whole letter and a half (even when I showed proof of the material being turned in).
Avoid this class at all costs, the assignments are not very organized, the group project makes the already heavy workload even more stressful. This would be a wonderful class without the group project. If the professor reads this, please amend the group project extensively or removed completely. Nice professor but the workload is not worth it.
100-level class with 300-level amount of work. Taking it as a last year elective, how silly of me! Half of the class is just endless discussion posts on 2 platforms. One requires you to film yourself, and the other gives you so few points for your effort youre practically spamming comments just to hit the point target. How is this quality learning?
Professor Hagen is clearly knowledgeable and cares a lot about sustainability; he is also kind and helpful. With that said, there is far too much work for this course level. The high saturation of information and assignments makes learning difficult. The course is doable, but take it when you have lots of time and can do recorded speeches.
*SOS 110* Professor Hagen is a great instructor, but this course required too much work for an elective. The TAs were also harsher graders than the actual professor. Discussion posts were complicated because they had so many parts, and the final project was kinda confusing. If you can, take another SOS class, especially if you're a STEM major.
You can tell that Professor Hagen is very passionate about his chosen field of study. A majority of the class is textbook and quiz focused, which you do on your own. As long as you're proactive about issues you might come up against, and you pay attention to the classwork schedule, this is a pretty easy A.
I liked this professor as much as one can for an online class. The TA was a much harsher grader than him and some assignments are kind of confusing w/ multiple parts and different deadlines. However, when I reached out with a concern, the prof got back to me within a few hours. I would recommend this prof and class to satisfy your SUST requirement
He's very passionate about the topic, and if you're interested in sustainability, then you'll find a lot of enjoyment in this class. The final essay was enjoyable to write, as there was a lot of room for creativity. The only bad thing is that there are weekly video discussions you have to participate in with groupmates that get pretty repetitive
