I wish I could rate him lower than a one. He started off offering no extra credit and no curves on exams which would be completely understandable for a different type of class. The final is the ASCS and all exams are based off this, so it is very difficult and almost impossible for regular chem2 students to pass. Very annoying makes terrible jokes

Tries to seem like he cares but makes up extra credit bc everyone is failing but makes the extra credit take hours and hours to do. His notes never correspond to his tests. He taught this class as if it was a refresher to AP Chem. He expects you to know basically everything BEFORE it is taught. Tests are unfair, their averages always failing, and he has over a 45% DFW rate. Unless you are going to Major in Chemistry, I don't recommend him to anyone. This is an overall bad class. Do not take if possible.

Lots of hw (Sapling Learning). Tests are pretty rough in the end, but manageable if you study. He give a bell curve on normal exams. Clicker quiz almost everyday, which is part of the grade. He is short tempered and pretty rude. Wastes so much class time talking about something that he could've said in 1 sentence. Got an A, but had to work for it.

Dr. Mamiya spends way too much time talking about study habits and all of the research that he is involved in, but does not teach the material whatsoever. Continually wanted classes input on his teaching methods, but when the class was finally honest w/ him he got offended and stopped caring to teach us at all for the remainder of the semester.

He is extremely smart and obviously loves chemistry but if you dont understand something he will make you feel dumb and say "what do you mean you dont understand, its basic algebra!" then move on. I'm a sophomore at Texas State and an Engineering Major and this is the first ever C I have received in all of my schooling to date. He gave me a C by 7 out of 1000 points and you shouldn't believe him when he says he is a fair tester. HE WILL GIVE YOU A TEST OVER THREE CHAPTERS WITH ONLY ONE DAY OF LECTURE PRIOR AND 200 slide powerpoints, GET OUT!

If you take this PROF your chance of FAILING is close to 100% because the stuff he teaches is not what hew asks in EXAM. So, I think you should TAKE ANY OTHER PROF but not this GUY.

By far the worst professor I have ever had. Class of probably 200+, we consistently had 40% passing rates on all the tests and he refused to adjust his teaching methods, his tests, or curve at all. I made a 94 in Chem 1 (with a 96 on the final) and made a 58 in this class. Several people filed official complaints to the dean. Do not take him.

This class is impossible to pass. You could go to class, attend SI sessions, do the hw and study your ass off and his tests will still be impossible to pass. 90% of my fellow classmates were failing his class. Each test only gets harder and harder. DO NOT TAKE HIM.

I would NOT recommend taking him at all! I have never done this bad in a class in my life. I never had enough time to finish the tests and he grades VERY harshly on the word problems. I got some of the answers right and he took off points because I didn't "do the right work" he wanted. Ended up dropping and taking a "W". Try anyone else.

A waste of time, you can't ask questions because that is asking for an answer, nor does he treat you with respect or dignity. Our test average for one exam as a class was a 36 and he didn't curve the exam. Good luck if you decide to sign up for his class, you'll need it.

Honestly Speaking, only a few or real gem students will get an A who are taking it twice or thrice, all other freshmen batch will get a B or a C. if you take this professor, your life will be difficult in the entire chemistry life. Dude, this guy is tough, but its all good for you. He stresses on stuff you need to remember and you need to focus for finals, so basically he is making you work for finals from Day-1, he is also a great teacher and a prof, if you go to him and ask in his study sessions, he will teach you word to word. But if you want an easy A, then forget it.

He was the worst teacher I've ever encountered. Avoid taking his classes at all cost!!! He's rude to people who ask questions, and his teaching style is horrible. He does not curve tests at all, and he doesn't care if you pass or fail. He's one of those teachers who tell you on the first day "half of you are going to fail this class".

I would suggest avoid taking this class at all costs. His test averages for test 1 was a 52% while the other professors were around a 80%. Exam 2 was an average of 40% while the others were way higher. I study very hard for this class and will most likely fail it.

We're all just a number. He conducts experiments on us which he passes out four different research consent forms for at beginning of the semester.

After being here two years, this is the worst professor I've had at Texas State University. I'm not one to blame alternative teaching styles or high expectations. This guy is just not good at teaching. He condescendingly flaunts his 30 year teaching background and blames his students for not understanding the material he can't teach.

I have been in Texas state for 4 years and I needed this class as a just a science requirement, I am a comp sci major, in which it is very obvious to study hard in almost every class and I pass classes with A/Bs this intro to chem prof is unreasonable, the hardest class Ive taken, not because of the material but because of the prof. He rushes through lecture too quickly along with piles not so hard homework but terribly tough quizzes, I would not recommend to anyone but if you do have to take the class, you MUST understand the work.

I am currently taking his class and I will say that he can be rude at times. He just goes over the lecture instead of actually breaking the content down and explaining the how's and why's. I would not take his class ever! I use outside resources to help me get through the course. Some of my classmates were scared to ask him a questions.

Ive waited 2 years (and 1 year into grad school) before finally deciding to submit this review. I was a Terry scholar and in the honors college, so Ive had hard profs. Im an academic by nature and plan to teach anatomy to med-students. This is absolutely the worst professor! He doesnt teach, hes rude and belittling in class and in his office.

Whatever you don't take this professor. Tests are too difficult and the material he presents in the class is way more difficult on the exams and he barely explains how to do the problems. Some of the questions he never went over in class either. He was very rude to students and even acknowledged that he was ignoring the emails he got from us.

I had a 3.9 GPA before this class and failed with a D. I have always excelled and Mamiya has been the worst teacher I have ever had. Dr. Mamiya expects you to know complex subjects that sometimes are not covered in class. Definitely test heavy, and most people would fail tests. He was unprepared for an online setting. Take another prof if you can.

He doesnt round at all. Tests are nothing like the lectures. One exam had a 31% average (normal in his class), no one scored high enough to get a D, still no curve.

I took away nothing from his class. I will not give him credit for teaching me chemistry because the only reason I passed the class was because of videos on YouTube. I one time emailed him asking him for help on an assignment, just for him to email me back saying he could not help me, as this was my assignment, and it was good I was struggling.

Tough grader was the only option, but this professor is UNPROFESSIONAL. He told the class that if they prevail upon SLAC or ask questions he will fail them. Conduct was reported to the Dean, nothing. He boasts about retaliating against complainants. Highest grades often in the 30's. Unorganized, don't ask questions he will belittle you.

He teaches the class as if it's a life or death situation. If you don't learn the stuff you are punished, there is no room for error. The issue with that is, this is a gen chem 1 course. A bunch of first years and taking this and he expects us to be perfect and learning everything on time, leaving first years little time to figure out college.

This professor is so rude and dont even bother asking any questions because he wont answer them. He put questions on the exam that we werent suppose to know and if we got it right, we had cheated. You have little time to learn a lot of material and in class he just goes over practice problems but doesnt really teach.

If your grade is low, he will blame it on your ability to learn and not on his style of teaching. Overall, I would not recommend taking his class.

I genuinely feel bad for anyone taking this class in the future. If you can avoid it just dont do it. He is the most arrogant Professor I have ever had. You ask a question in class and he makes you feel like an idiot. Hell say something is extra credit and after you complete the assignment goes back on his word and its no longer extra credit.

I went to office hours, had almost a 100% homework avg, ceased any opportunity for extra credit from the snowstorm, spent most of my studying for this course, and I still got a low C. This is the only C Ive gotten, all my other grades were As this semester. First exam is misleading (too easy in comparison). Im sure most people failed this class.

Avoid this professor at all cost! His lectures, videos, textbooks, and ALEKS hws are far different from the exams. I only passed because of my amazing photo memory I could remember the answers of some probs that were in past exams. Dont bother working or be social if you want to get a good grade in this class, he will take ALL of your freetime.

I took his class during covid and I still have nightmares. I distinctly remember how hostile he was and how quick he was to belittle students. Just avoid his class and you will better your chances at getting your chem credit.
