Blain is a king. Chemistry is hard but it's obvious he really cares about his students understanding it and doing well. He has no intentions of "weeding out" students of discouraging anyone. He's happy to answer questions and he even creates and offers practice exams that are SO helpful for the real exams.
Dr.Mamiya is an incredible teacher who makes learning basic chem a breeze. His lectures are engaging and he mostly goes through practice problems meaning it is best to watch his videos before class. Amazing teacher can't wait to take his gen chem II class next year.
Attendance does matter because he takes it for a grade at the end of the semester, in class he just goes through practice problems. Lessons are through video so it is best to watch videos before class, he makes practice test that are very helpful, he uses textbook and Aleks. The aleks is a bit annoying and hard but other than it's good.
He's overall really funny and sweet and very straightforward. Assigns a decent amount of homework/ quizzes via ALEKS. You must go to the lectures or you will get lost real quick.
I loved Mamiya! He's very fun and he gives credit on every exam so I've never failed. Definitely take him! Beware of ALEKS(it sucks)
Please take Dr M! He is very funny and a great teacher if you actually put effort. He will redo an example several times in class if you ask him to. His tests are quite easy for it being a chem class. Aleks is annoying but really helps your grade. He curves the tests! You will not fail if you put in some effort. I would take his class again!
Great professor! He made me like chemistry. Attendance is highly recommended or else you will get lost easily. The classes were the highlight of my week. Felt like a huge family. Lots of jokes. The time flies by so fast each class.
Better professors to take
Thought he was going to be great when I saw his rate my professor but oh was I wrong. Always felt stupid in his class. We learn Gen Chem in basic chem and all the utsa tutors told me this. If you take, you will be so ready for gen but beware to have no life takint mamiya
This course was not even challenging, the struggle was putting up with the professor. He is so rude for no reason.
This kind of professor enjoys the power he has over students and uses his position (however low that is) to be cruel.
Needs a reality check. I don't know what he gets from being so arrogant and mean but I sure hope he does not act like that with everyone.
Very trail-by-fire teaching. He uploads videos that briefly go over the topic and then puts up practice problems throughout the lecture, if you have a question about a problem you don't understand he WILL outright ask if you're even paying attention. Attendance is mandatory, exams are tough but 5 questions are given, weekly ALEKS, daily quizzes.
Videos are not helpful, exams are difficult, a lot of ALEKS in very little time, doesn't teach in lecture, will call you stupid in front of the class, daily assignments, poorly answered emails, and will make you hate chemistry. Unless there's another teacher AVOID!!!
I have never had a panic attack over a class before. If you have a learning disability like I do, do not take this professor.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS, HE DOES BASIC LECTURE VIDEOS AND ICLICKER QUESTIONS IN LECTURE AND WONT LET YOU SEE GRADES MAJORITY OF THE SEMESTER TILL HE'S REQUIRED TO .STAY VERY VERY FAR FROM THIS ARROGANT MAN
You are going to have to work for it here. The lectures only solidify your learning so you will have to come prepared to class and do the homework to get the lecture. Focuses on learning how to learn and set you up for the future. Chemistry information is a bonus. The real takeaway is learning how to be a student
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Prof Mamiya is a good teacher, but he assigns a TON of homework. Uses Iclicker for attendance, and ALEKS. Tests are hard, but the first five questions are questions from the previous exam. ALEKS has strict deadlines, so stay on top of it. ALEKS is also worth 30% of the final grade. Difficult if math is not your strong suit (like me)
Do Not take this Professor save your GPA. He is very rude, if he does like your question he will make fun of you and make you feel dumb. Chemistry is a hard course and he expects everyone to learn at the same level and pace. He does not teach very well and all he goes over is questions in class.
Don't take this class unless you feel like teaching yourself the material. He uses iclicker to take attendance. The material is uploaded through canvas and its just videos of him explain 1-2 problems, and in class he just does a couple review questions. He seems like a chill guy but his style of teaching might not be for everyone.
He assigns an extreme amount of homework that is not possible to achieve if you have other hard classes or a job... or a life. He also assigned an extreme amount of homework during Thanksgiving break.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. The subject is hard but he made it so much more difficult than it needed to be. he doesn't lecture in class, he post "lecture videos" on canvas, goes over the bare minimum in the video and when comes test day asks the most difficult problems. the way he words his problems is terrible, he will make you feel dumb. AWFUL!
he doesn't even see let you see your grade, he says "it disrupts your learning because you're only focusing on passing", like why else would i be taking the class. will make you feel dumb, doesn't lecture in class, post vague lecture videos then has very difficult problems on the test, and words his questions terribly. is available for office hour
This guy is a joke
Blain Mamiya was a professor who gave you exactly what he expected you to know. There was a lot of Aleks homework and a total of 5 exams on top of the cumulative final exam makes things a little stressful but you can find everything you need to pass his class either in the syllabus or by asking him directly.
Please do not take this course! Dr. Mamiya solely relies on Aleks and 3 minute lecture videos for you to learn material. Most of his lectures are nonsense, and if you ask a question he will make you feel dumb and make fun of you. The amount of aleks homework given is impossible to complete. This is the first class I have failed. DONT TAKE IT!!!!
While scared and intimidated at first, that slowly subsided when I started going to Dr.Mamiyas office hours. He really does want his students to succeed, but also wants to prepare us for future chemistry classes. He gives extra credit and you get 5 free questions per exam. First two exams are the hardest, basically testing who will put in the work.
Professor Mamiya only teaches via youtube videos and practice problems during class, he tests you on your knowledge by using i-clicker questions as attendance and participation grades. He's very condescending and rude and his reviews are nothing like the exams. If you don't want your gpa to drop, don't take him.
Professor Mamiya only teaches via youtube videos and practice problems during class, he tests you on your knowledge by using i-clicker questions as attendance and participation grades. In class he will make you feel dumb for asking a question and is condescending. If you actually go to office hours he is very caring and wants you to succeed.
Does NOT allow you to see your grade until after the class is over, does not cover material well. Be prepared to teach yourself, as he uses ALEKS as his sole learning method. He has YouTube videos on Canvas, but that's it. Don't waste your money or GPA on this class. It's not a good class to take if you have outside responsibilities like work.
Doctor Mamiya doesn't teach in class. 90% of my learning came from looking at the explanations to questions on ALEKS, which in itself was a pain to complete. In his "lectures" you sit in your seat waiting for him to change slides to the next useless iClicker question because he's saying something either unfunny or passive aggressive.
don't do it.
don't do it I BEG U
This should be the last professor anyone takes. Definitely the worst professor in the chemistry department and at UTSA in general. Do not take this class, you will regret it!
Highly recommend avoiding this professor unless you're coming into this class with a good understanding of chemistry. Nothing feels basic about this course and Dr. Mamiya will not baby you through it. The material itself isn't very complicated, it's the way it's presented. Test out of this course or find another professor.
This is not the teacher for you if you don't understand chemistry. Will purposely try to discourage you. Has threatened students at times. No notes or material will help you succeed on tests. Does have a "No electronic policy in place. ALEKS doesn't help you practice. iClickers are mandatory and sometimes makes correct answers count for credit.
He takes attendance based on iclicker questions. He posts videos, which you're expected to watch before class as lecture, so that during class you just answer questions about it. Aleks is sometimes a lot. You basically have to either learn from aleks or teach yourself if you want to learn. Exams are in person and he does provide scantrons.
Do not take this professor at all costs. PLEASE LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS, he is rated a 2/5 for a reason! This professor is not good at what he does whatsoever.
I do NOT like this man, however, but he can teach. You will learn chemistry, BUT you will be frustrated. If you're a student with disabilities: he does not care about you. He does not believe you. He is a pain to conform to accommodations, but if you report to the SDS office they'll take care of him, but he will be passive-aggressive toward you.
Legitimately the worst teacher I've ever had, but it's not like he tries to teach in the first place anyway.
If someone in your family passes that is out of state well your in luck! This professor will save you money and time by not letting you retake an exam another day. So instead of saying bye to my grandma one last time I took his exam instead. Expect to teach yourself, listen to him yapping about nothing, and if something goes wrong well tough.
As an A & B student this is the only class that I have ever failed in my life. Blain cannot and does not teach class. If you want to pass you have to teach yourself because he never teaches in class. He makes rude and sarcastic remarks to students and doesn't explain problems correctly,I would highly recommend to avoid taking his class if possible.
This will not be an easy class and will require effort, watch the videos before coming to class and utilize his office hours/ free tutoring the campus offers. Exams have up to a twenty percent curve with 5 of the questions coming from the previous test, put in the effort and you'll pass with a greater knowledge of chemistry. He wants you to succeed
Dude TERRIBLE professor, I had to take a withdrawal because I couldn't take the impact it would've had on my GPA. He never told us what our grade in the class was and all he would say was "you're going to be okay." Made chemistry way harder than it should be. 0/10.
This man is an awesome instructor. He is difficult compared to others, but he actually cares that you learn the material
The reality checks and professionalism culture shock that he provides must feel like a slap in the face to younger students, and I could see why many reviews refer to him as "condescending". I would argue that he just has high expectations, and the wake-up call to get serious about STEM is necessary and refreshing. He truly wants you to succeed.
disrespectful chemistry teacher, I had a terrible experience in their class, and I strongly advise against taking it. The teaching was disorganized, and there was a complete lack of respect for students. I often felt belittled and unsupported, making it extremely difficult to learn. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this class at all costs.
The chemistry department at UTSA is horrible for gen chem. There is an impossible workload with the amount of material and homework due to ALEKS. The forced participation with the Iclicker is expensive and unnecessary. I think this professor is very outspoken to the organization of the gen chem courses, and I do not trust his statistics justify it.
Can come off as tough for those who are new to university but he was a great professor to have. I believe he is tough because he wants us to be ale to learn the material properly and prepare us for future upper level courses. He has a criteria to follow and if you complete the homework and study he will see your efforts and you will not fail.
The worse instructor I have had the displeasure of "studying" under. The feeling of entitlement and ego this person carries is way more than his passion for teaching and instructing. The class average during his semester was 50-60%, keep in mind this is basic chemistry. I only wish I took the ALEKS replacement test, instead of wasting my time.
Not someone I would ever recommend taking. Aleks due every day out of the week among other assignments. Not even my past Statistics or physics classes were as workload heavy as this. Will go an entire lecture with him rambling on how students fail, this is chemistry not academic advising. Extremely condescending, consistently gives smart remarks.
This professor has high expectations, if you don't know the material in advance expect to be self taught the majority of the time.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS AT ALL COST!!! I took this class and struggled the entire time, I would preview class, go and ask him questions during office hours and he would say it is just the way I am studying. He loves to see people fail, his ego is the 5% passing. Call Dr.Lamb if enough people complain, then maybe she will do something about it.
I'm not sure why Dr.Mamiya has been given such horrible ratings. The comments on here are from lazy students. Trust me! His attendance is mandatory up until the end of the semester. Iclicker questions can be found on the exam and he provides a review for his exams. His exams are structured to where FIVE wrong questions can still get you a 100.
Do not take his class. He is not understanding to any circumstances whatsoever. You can talk to him as much as you want but he will not help you. He will just ask you why you don't understand the material and then continue to do a horrible job at explaining it.
He's bald and angry, but lowkey wholesome
He spends most about talking about things that are not even chemistry related. Then he actually begins to do "work" which he expects you to already know. And there is other better chem professors which students are doing great in, and you compare that to Mamiya and he is the problem.
Be prepared to be publicly humiliated in class if you're late. Doesn't matter if you can't control traffic or if there are accidents, he will blame you in front of everybody and shame you!
He can be mean sometimes but if you go to his office hours he's chill. He even jokes in class. Iclicker can be open or multiple choice and attendance is mandatory. I would take someone else if you want extra credit. He is not that bad as everyone says, just be responsible.
Do NOT take this egg head, this dude is the worst professor ive ever had, either CHOOSE SOMEONE ELSE, or just take the aleks. he doesn't teach apart from 4-5 min videos he posts, class is just him quizzing you the whole time, he also yaps for abt 20-25 mins at the beginning of every class. IF UR READING THIS, CHOOSE ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
Take the ALEKS or prepare to suffer in his class, he gives youtube videos and then expects you to know it by the next day, he'll blame the way you study, rather then to blame himself. He tells you to change how you study but really he should change his way of teaching bc ofc its not working.
wish there was a way to rate a professor a 0 even that would still be too kind for this individual. To name just a few issues: they are disrespectful, egotistical, and completely incapable of teaching. Their interactions with students are condescending and dismissive, and their approach to instruction is not only ineffective but outright negligent.
I wish rmp allowed for us to type more so that I can fully give you and idea of how much of a terrible experience it was having this professor
Terrible, big ego , never again
don't ruin your tests, or else your cooked in class.
Get ready to teach yourself outside of class, lectures only make sense if you watch his videos and have an understanding of the concept before you learn it.
Most of the people commenting are complaining about preparing before class, if you're pre-health you better reconsider if you can't handle watching a 10 minute video before class. Dr. Mamiya is genuinely interested in making sure students learn and fully comprehend concepts that will carry you throughout chemistry. He's fun and always available
Do not take him!! This class literally traumatized me!! Take somebody else!!
One of the worst leads for a department ever unfortunately. UTSA has a lot of great department heads who care and set you up for sucess but Mamiya just has the "I struggled so you should too" mindset. He is tough and words questions badly. He does not care if more than half the class gets below an A. I wish it was different.
Rate my professor doesn't allow extensive reviews, which is a shame. I say this mainly because this class is a mixed bag, and 350 CHARACTERS. wouldn't do justice towards the experience of this class. My main issues where that he hides your grades on canvas, and tests that don't check for understanding. Moreso attention to detail. Prepare early.
This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had in a class. The practice tests weren't like the exam, the homework load is insane, he gives less chances and grades more harsh
Whatever you do please do not take this class, this class has stripped me of my dignity I am not joking. Dr Mamiya seems like an awesome guy outside of class, I enjoyed conversation with him on topics like biology but please just save yourself and do not take this class just "Aleks out" and be lost in gen chem I because you'll be equally lost here.
I took him Fall 2024, be prepared to basically teach yourself, he prides himself on having a low passing rate, and he'll belittle you in class if you don't know the material all the way. save yourself the time and do the Aleks placement instead.
Professor Blain was rude, unhelpful, and created a hostile learning environment. Lectures were rare or uninformative, grading was unclear, and questions were often met with belittling comments. Students were left to teach themselves. I would not recommend this professor to anyone serious about learning.
Take this professor if you like to be yelled at, spoken down to, and publicly humiliated. To SDS students, AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COST. He keeps the grades locked the entire semester and gives excessive assignments. He does not teach ever, he only quizzes and expects you to learn at home. He brags about his fail rate being over 50%. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Contrary to other posts, I genuinely liked Dr. Mamiya. He communicates his expectations clearly and rewards hard work. You need to study and practice daily to keep up with assignments. He has a great sense of humor, is uncompromising, and is always willing to help. His words can be harsh, but he keeps it real 24/7. You will work for that grade.
disrespectful.
He may be blunt and sassy, and in turn it comes off as rude. However, he's clear and provides every resource you need to pass. His study methods work if you actually use them. I didn't like him the first time, but once I followed his advice, I learned more from his methods than I would have if he read off slides for 2 hours. 10/10 recommend!
Not exaggerating when I say at LEAST 15 assignments a week; along with uploading notes and schedules. Truly a Headache. Very nice and funny but has absolutely no perception of a life outside of class.
Funny, but tough. 5 assignments a week at the very least, plus you're expected to do ALEKS daily. The single class that is making me consider a career without a degree. Tough, but fair. He has strict standards. You meet the standards, you pass, or you don't, and you don't pass. His standards are clear, but again, tough.
Gives a minimum of 10 assignments to do a week, some of which have absolutely nothing to do with chemistry. Knows what he is talking about, but is a horrible teacher, has a "you teach yourself" mentality. Grade depends heavily on ALEKS (daily), which is very inconvenient for people with other obligations. would not take again.
Either you love him or hate him. It is vary true about the 5 assignments a week and daily ALEKS. However, if you listen to him you will pass; this is basically a AIS class dressed up as chem. DO NOT BE LAZY and you will pass; exams are hard be ready to study for hours just to get a 50, they are designed to be that way. Understand the material!!!
Taking this class currently and this class makes me reconsider my major and career field. Lectures rarely contain actual lecture, more just going over things he expects us to know. Know's what he's talking about and is respectable but not good at teaching. At LEAST 10 assignments a week not including all the daily ALEKS.
