A great teacher. Really explains things well and gave me a wonderful beginning foundation in Chemistry.
Awful, has no ability to communicate. After asking him questions I'd become more confused than I started. Also, the class average on the tests was around 50%, and he saw nothing wrong with it. I got an A, but I hated every day of dealing with Blaine.
worst teacher i have ever dealt with. i have been teaching for many years and understand what should be done and how it should be done. He is of no help and frankly i dont think he really has any passion or cares about students future.
I quote, "Too many people are getting A's on my tests. I'm b eing too soft." Enough said...
He tells a lot of deadpan jokes in class, and perhaps those who don't like him need to not take everything so seriously. I am no science major, but I am rarely confused by what he says. My errors cause the most trouble for my grades.
Very knowledgeable and helpful, seems strict initially, but dont panic. He gives about 10-12 points worth extra questions on each exam, but scores it for 100. So its like extra credit. He makes Chem as easy as possible. Plays 97.7FM in the lab! rock on!
Nice guy but he only knows how to explain things 1 way and if you dont get it you're out of luck. His tests are very cut and dry and make up most of your grade. The final is a HUGE percent of the grade. Beware! If you're not good at science dont take him.
He was a great teacher and was very helpful. I enjoyed taking his class.
good teacher.i learned a lot from him.he shows a lot of care for his students and is very available to address any questions you should have.He grades fair. His tests are challenging, but you learn the material well as a result.
He explains things very well. Do the work and you will do well. I think he does care about his students. I took his class over a year ago, and just yesturday he passed me in the parking lot, and stopped to chat. How many ex-prof. remember you?
Nice personality, funny...a bit of a mumbler in class so it's hard to get notes sometimes. He's straight forward on what needs to be studied. If you read the text, do the homework and do practice tests from his website an A is possible.
HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! I thought you had to go to school to become a teacher. he is so dry!!!
Use his lecture notes from his instuctor website. He follows them exactly.
The course is very difficult but he uses fun examples. I actually learned some chemistry!
Verry good teacher, actually he is the best Chem teacher around. He is down to earth and easy to approach with questions. He is very hard and presents his students with a challenge, but if you keep up and do your work, you will do fine.
Harrison is absolutle GREAT w/no doubt!I took him 4 summer & got 84% B!He grades easy & gives u a curve! No extra credit. WARNING, there is a lot of studying.I went 2 tutor almost everyday after his class 2 refresh everything i learn. As long as u attend his class & go 2 tutor, Im sure u'll do fine.
Took intro to chem and then O Chem with him. O Chem was a hard class and he wasn't so great at explaining it (though he tried). On the plus side, great personality, humorous, and great to look at to pass time by. Can you say hottie?

This guy is the best.Although he is tough,he makes chem fun and intresting. He seems to care for his students and wants them to succeed.12A and 12B are very hard, but if you do your work and ask questions you will do good. Tests are hard."KNOW YOUR ACID BASE CHEM VERY WELL"
He was awesome at explainging chem. He was hard, but he made himself completely available for help. He made an effort to get to know us and come to us if we looked confused. I would take his class again anytime. Come to lecture and ask questions, he makes you feel comfortable enough to. Great teacher, one of the best I've had a west valley.
very good teacher, keeps you interested in the class. funny examples. take good notes and ask questions. i highly recommend taking chem with him if possible.
He's a very nice, funny, friendly professor. Very approachable, cares a lot about his students. Likes to get to know you. Very cute when he talks about his daughter in class. That being said... VERY hard professor. Do not take in conjunction with any other work intensive class. You will HAVE to put in tons of time.
HARD TEACHER, HAS TROUBLE TEACHING THE CLASS, TAKE THIS CLASS AT SAN JOSE CITY COLLEGE IF YOU CAN, DO NOT TAKE IT AT WESTVALLEY
he is one of the best teacher , i ever had. the tests are sooooooo!!!!! hard.i love his teaching style and his test.
This was quite a difficult course and not all that fun to say the least. Mr. Harrison is a cool guy but has a different teaching style than most, which makes his lectures hard to understand. The exams are very difficult and cover a lot of material. Don't take this course in conjuction with other heavy duty classes, you'll pay the price.
Pretty monotone but the class is great. He knows a LOT...But is very broad when it comes to the tests. He will tell you to study a lot of material for review, but the questions that are actually on the test are pretty specific. Print out lectures and ask lots of questions. He tells some pretty funny, random stories to help you remember things!
Took him for both 12A and 12B and although he tests hard, he's such a great guy/ teacher. He just makes sure you know your stuff.
He is a great teacher. His exams are very very difficult but he is so helpful and his lectures are very clear. He is always there to answer questions.
one of the best teachers ever.He is always there to help.He cares alot about his students and makes sure they understand the material real well.Loves chemistry.VERY FAIR GRADER/TEACEHR.NO matter where and when u catch him during the day,he is willing to help u.Athough his exams are hard, but i learned alot.
Dr. Harrison is by far one of the best teachers that I have had. The class is not a joke, and the exams are difficult, but he teaches with enthusiasm and he knows the material REALLY WELL! He is always willing to help whether it is during his office hours or not. He is a fair grader and his lectures are very clear. I learned a lot from this class.
His tests are hard, but you learn a lot. He is a great teacher! He knows a lot about ochem! Just make sure you study study study...
by far the best teacher i have ever had. he is helpful, clear, and his lectures are awesome. he is a very fair grader as well and isn't picky about labs. wonderful teacher! take ochem with dr. harrison if you want to understand chemistry!
This is a hard class but he is a great teacher. He really wants his students to understand. He also gives out practice exams which really help.
He really helps if you have questions. His office hours is wonderful, you can find him very easily. Chem is not an easy sub. but w/ him, it could be easy. Study and attend every single class. He really helps!
great teacher, the practice exams are a great study tool. it was a wonderful class.
notes can be a little disorganized, but in general an excellent teacher. Makes class fun with funny stories. Office hours and practice exams are great, and he really does want to help you if you aren't doing well. Tests are HARD so be prepared and he is a pretty tough grader on everything. DO NOT miss class you will get so far behind.
Awesome teacher. Love his stories! He's funny and really great at explaining fairly difficult concepts. Plus he wears great shirts.
he is very helpful and he is always in his office..his tests are not hard..just study the lecture notes you will be fine
He is such a nice guy. He has a really organized class. The way he teachs is interesting. but u should take notes when he is teaching because all he wants in Quizes & Exams are among those subjecs. He likes his job and so his students.
First, his exams are ridiculously difficult and tricky. This guy really prepares you for UC level chemistry. Don't take the class if you don't have the time to put into it. His practice exams, in my opinion, didn't really help. They were way easier than the real exams.
Lectures NOT well organized. After tests saw topics weren't addressed in lecture like he claimed. Now use voice recorders & he mumbles those "topics" that are on tests. Be a hawk in his class GET VOICE RECORDER! Read, practice equations b/c it's not UC. A good prof is clear, organized, material progresses; His lectures jumbled and hard to follow.
This class requires a lot of studying unless you completely understand chemistry. Did not care for his teaching habits and his lectures if you can understand him can help some what. Try to take another teacher that is more helpful.
his class is hard in the fact that his lectures aren't the easiest nor most interesting to stay awake in. he is a funny guy tho. lab you each work individually, but sometimes all you do are hmwk problems, check them off, then leave. go to his OH to chk hmewk/labs to get 100% b4 turning in.
nice guy but class sucks. he doesn't explain anything twice. if you don't understand to bad. he expects you to have previous knowledge about chem. I would take another chem teacher if possible.
harddddddddddddddddddd. stay away at all cost.. YOU WILL FREAKIN THANK ME FOR THIS!!!! there is no drop the lowest in this class. he should be taken as a last resort or option if no other teachers are available. be ready to pay the price if you take him. half of the people drop during the semester.. AGAIN. STAY AWAY.. YOU WILL THANK ME FOR THIS!!!
be prepared to take this class at a UC LEVEL. if you dont have time for that. his lectures are all over the place. you'll see some surprises in the exams. if you want to slide with an A or B or like to slack/procrastinate this is not the teacher for you. this is a major warning you all should take into consideration and its the truth. my 2 cents
sucks. going to be a repeat student. going to drop other classes and re-take this class because chem is a pre req before getting into other classes. I am going to study on my own this time. lectures jumps all over the place. I THOUGHT ALL THE BAD RATINGS WERE FROM LAZY COLLEGE STUDENTS. BOY I WAS WRONG! definitely hard professor. good luck
I really don't see what everyone is complaining about. This is Ochem, of coarse it's hard. Prof Harrison is very passionate, helpful and approachable. If you have hw or labwork that's due, go to him before class and he gives you the answers. The material goes by fast, but he is as lenient as he can be while teaching you the subject. Work for it.
Never think about taking Organic Chemistry with him. No reasonable relation between his teaching style & the tests. Tests are super hard,His office hours is not that much helpful, and u can get a good grade in his class only if this is the only science class that you're taking, and you have no works, or anything else to do.
Positives: Humorous (dry wit); seems genuinely interested in seeing students succeed. Negatives: Sets the bar well above the content of his lectures. Your time would be better spent reading the assigned text and doing all of the assigned problems (repeat) with some additional textbooks for reference - the book he has elected to use is below par.
I've had Dr. Harrison for Ochem 12A and B and I have to say he is the BEST Ochem professor you can get at a community college. He will prepare you for university level classes. It is hard to follow him sometimes in lecture but he is ALWAYS willing to help you during his office hours, but you have to put forth the effort. Great humor and stories.
A very difficult instructor, he is not very good at explaining what he is doing on the board and should do more examples. He is a tough grader. I honestly studied the material for long periods of time trying to link what we did in class to what he wanted us to know for the exams.
Lectures are ok. He will never repeat anything. If the class in general does not ask questions, the class in general will be missing important concepts. He explains things lazily and glosses over difficult concepts. Lecture Material Difficulty: 6/10. Book Problem Difficultly: 7/10. Exam Difficulty: 14/10. You are in for a surprise.
Lectures were ruff since he doesn't give enough examples to understand how to do his homework, BUT Go to his office hours he will pretty much give you the answers. His exams are way harder than his homework, so be prepared. Labs were fun, but be sure to do your experiments right as well as the pre-experiment homework.
VERY DIFFICULT!Lots of hours are required.READ the book.Do tons of problems.FLASH CARDS are a must!Go to office hours,he's very helpful if you show an attempt.Lectures are at times hard to follow.Mainly "just read the book, a lot."
Professor Harrison is really nice. Funny guy, sometimes awkward jokes, but yeahm he makes the class fun. Very willing to help during lab. Study for tests!
I took chem 2 in the summer of 2010 and though it was a total breeze but I had seen the material before as well. Funny guy, dry sense of humor and friendly. Like lots of teachers, work hard, think before you speak and he'll do everything in his power to help you out.
Harrison was a hard teacher for me. His tests were very tricky, alot of stuff not covered in class. use office hours! do all the homeowrk and labs because you will need the extra pts to make up for possible very low test grades. He won't spoon feed you the material. But once you pass his class you really feel like you've accomplished something
Yes, Ochem is a difficult class, but the key is to keep up with the material; if you do, it's not that bad. He's a really cool guy so don't be afraid to ask questions, and do the suggested problems because they're really useful. I hated gen chem but I loved these classes because I felt like I was genuinely understanding chemistry for the first time
Class focuses far too much on memorizing mathematical formulae and minutiae, and not enough on critical thinking about chemistry as it applies to allied health. Harrison's own words after our 3rd exam: "It seems like you guys mostly know the math, but don't understand the concepts and why you're doing the math"
Just finished his summer '12 class. It was a blast! He's a very genuinely nice guy, and loves getting to know his students! USE THE TEXTBOOK! Do the active examples, and suggested problems, and work over all the ones he does in class. He even posts previous exams online which are almost identical to his exams. Put in effort and you'll do great :)
5 homework,3 exams, 1 final plus lab work.Tough class!GOOD LUCK!
Do not take, Good luck, he is not helpful at all. Learn and fend for yourself.
Ochem is a hard class no matter where you take it. Harrison does everything in his power to help his students pass; 80% for an A, hides extra credit on all exams and finals, extra credit opportunities, will show you mistakes on labs before turning it in, and comes into his office hours early 99% of the time. Take advantage of this teacher.
Harrison is fantastic!! Dreaded chemistry and was upset that I had to take it, but ended up not only doing well, but enjoying this class. It was very hard for me though, you really have to put the work in. He is really friendly, a fair grader, humorous, and easily accessible. Use office hours and practice tests. He'll help you with anything.
He's extremely intelligent, which I think makes it hard for him to relay the information effectively to the students. That being said, once you get in a groove and understand his methods, it's relatively simple. Also, he is ALWAYS willing to help and explain things further in office hours, which people rarely attend, so take advantage!
Took his chem 2 class in the summer. It was pretty difficult because it was shorter than the normal semester. However, it is still manageable and if you put the time in you will pass! He's a really great guy and kind of funny. Needs to learn to draw.
Anyone complaining about his lectures is probably just not listening. Anyone complaining about his tests probably just doesn't know the material as well as they've told themselves they do. Anyone complaining about the homework (all 3 pages of it per semester) has probably already dropped. He is fair, great at lecturing, and beyond helpful.
This instructor does NOT explain info clearly and is the most unhelpful instructor I have ever had; he is more concerned with surfing than his students. When asked a question he is overly vague or refuses to answer them.I gained most my knowledge of the course from Youtube and other students. I have a B in the course but that is NOT because of him
It's a hard subject and he does not make it easy for you. If you take his class, you will be tested beyond what you thought you could be in a junior college. Expect to learn on your own and suffer through tests. Try not to take with a heavy course load. It will likely backfire on you.
It appears that my previous rating of this professor has been deleted; which I do not understand how or why! As I stated before, any post that says this professor is extremely helpful and clear has not taken his class or it is staged. Expect to get the majority of your knowledge from other sources rather than from him.
Harrison knows o-chem in and out and has very high expectations (& very little tolerance of BS answers). Tests are about your ability to apply what you know, not regurgitation, and are graded ungenerously. But: great sense of humor & travel stories, helpful in office hours. You'll work harder than you ever have and learn a lot. 80% and up is an A.
This instructor is anything but helpful during office hours or during classlab. He is vague or talks to you as if you should know it. He is an intelligent man and can be personable at times, but none of that matters if he can't convey the need material. I like being challenged and working hard, but I also like an instructor who will clarify materi
The class is tough but he gives study guide. Follow it and you'll pass the class. 10 online hw and 12 lab work which is not bad. He's grading is great since you can pass the class with C.
Do yourself a favor and take this course. Organic chemistry changed the way I study. Every other class is a walk in the park after this class. Biochemistry at UCSD is easy compared to this course. Dr. Harrison also helped me get an internship over the summer. Don't be lazy and work for it! Especially you pre-meds who want it easy as undergrads.
He gets the answers wrong in lectures sometimes, his notes are full of typos, doesn't give you much help when you ask, his answer keys and explanations are very vague. Everyone else who I've spoken says it's a guarantee that you must seek outside help just to get by this class. Many of us have purchased external resources and see tutors regularly
I'm almost done taking his chem30a class and it's hard. But in 29. I'm not there to good around. I came to learn and be taught by the best and Mr. Harrison is not on a master at chem but I pretty funny guy. He is a though teacher , but I want the smartest there is and I have to show him respect. Thank you Mr. Harrison!
He assigns online homework that does not relate to class material. Labs are extremely boring and you better get your calculations correct. He is an extremely tough grader despite him saying he'll give you points for work, when he doesn't. Messes up on calculations often during lecture. Do yourself a favor and chose someone else.
just do not take it. so hard
He didn't talk about Gandalf!!!
Ignores you when you ask questions or just shrugs his shoulders and says he doesn't know. He does the bare minimum to help his students succeed. He makes you grade your own labs with answer keys that are full of typos! What's worse? He doesn't tell you about the typos unless you ask.
The worst professor I've ever had. He outright refuses to answer your questions and is a poor communicator when it comes to his assignments.
Syllabus clearly lacked instructions on how to gain access to online homework so when we asked him to clarify where and how, he literally shrugged, said "I don't know", and proceeded to lecture. His lectures are confusing and when you ask for clarification he will also refuse to do so because he thinks you weren't listening.
Lectures were confusing and unclear so you will be teaching yourself out of the text book instead. It'd be better to use step by step lists and clear rules for each type of problem instead of talking through and writing problems on the board like he does. He's impatient with you if you don't understand him the first time he explains something.
Save yourself the trouble and take your classes with someone else. This instructor avoids answering questions and makes the material more confusing than it should be.
Read the instructions EXTREMELY CAREFULLY or you will bomb exams; not because you don't know your stuff, but because he changes trivial details of the problem that result in different answers than you'd expect. Its like trick questions. If stressed about finishing before times up, you won't catch the small minutia that cause catastrophic failure.
Cold as ice towards his students. Does nothing to help you when you ask questions and makes you struggle to figure everything out on your own. He also doesn't post final study guides and gives poor advice on preparing for all other exams. After this class I can kiss my 4.0 GPA goodbye. If I could give him a rating under 0, I would.
We are now almost to finals week and less than 1/2 of us remain. The class started with 40 students. I have seen several of my classmates, myself included, break down in tears of discouragement over the poor quality of the professor's instruction and expectations when it comes to the labs and exams. He strongly dislikes explaining materials twice.
Harrison is one of the best chem teachers I've had. It's a hard class, but it's ochem for crying out loud. I found that many people weren't willing to put in the work to succeed. Yes, Harrison is difficult, yes he is a tough grader, but he is a teacher who is always available and willing to help (ONLY if he sees you are putting in the effort).
Harrison doesn't baby his students. He treats you like a college student. If you're not willing to work, you'll fail. There is no extra credit and or 2nd chances but I appreciate it. He is a caring teacher despite what others have said and has explained things to me a million times over. Show him you care, and he'll show you he cares.
I personally thought Mr. H was a great teacher. He cares about his students, and because of this he puts you through hell. He is difficult and expects a lot but explains things very well. I enjoyed the class a lot. It really rewards your work efforts. I've learned more here than I could have at any UC or CC. He prepares you for Upper division well.
He is a fair(but tough)grader & expects a lot from students. I don't regret taking his class. I know more about ochem than any of my buddies at UC's. He teaches you all you need to know about ochem. I knew it inside & out by the end, well enough to tutor it. Great teacher, lots of work, awesome subject. Ochem is how everything works.
He doesn't like answering questions, and when he does , he leaves you with more questions than you started with! The online homework usually has nothing to do with his lectures. He is a very difficult grader and is poor at explaining
Tough class, but it is possible to do well. He tests your UNDERSTANDING of the material, so don't think you can everything and think you'll be fine. It's all about comprehending the material and being able to apply what you've learned. His exam problems may not be what he went over explicitly in class, but he gives you what you need to solve them
Be prepared to work in this class. Do every suggested HW problem 2x, always ask questions if you dont understand the topics. This isn't your typical community college like a sociology class, this is a Organic Chemistry class that is preparing you towards for graduate school. Attend class everyday otherwise you will be lost when you come back.
Chemistry isn't easy but Harrison does a reasonable job explaining each concept. He isn't the best at answering students questions but he reviews the material at the beginning of every class. He's a tough grader with the labs and expects you to do them right. Exams are long but not too difficult. Will give points for doing most of the work correct
Does virtually nothing to help, or guide students. A show-off. Would never recommended.
Tests are difficult, but he gives you a practice exam. Make sure to review all homework questions with him, it is great practice. The lectures are sometime slow and dense. Slow model builder. Easy to talk to, and labs are graded fairly. Must study, memorization is key.
Right off the bat, this is a very difficult class. You have to put in the time and all the work . If you blink, fall asleep, or not pay attention you won't pass. This (ochem) is one of those "weeding" classes in the chem major to see who really wants to stay . It will prepare you well for upper division chemistry classes for its difficulty.
AMAZING professor for ochem. It's a hard class but he is very accessible, helpful and does his best to ensure people do well. 80% is an A, so I have seen lots of people go from failing to an A. Be prepared to study but he is as good of a professor you're going to get for ochem.
Harrison seems not approachable in my opinion. maybe because its all online now? All lectures are prerecorded which is good and bad. Tests are 6 pages long. very heavy material. highly suggest doing well on lab and hw so you have some wiggle room for exams.
Professor Harrison did not provide an interactive class environment this semester. He does not seem accessible outside of class and does not use Canvas to communicate. Secondly, he is a harsh grader with no exact grading scale. The textbook work and lectures do not prepare you for exams well, which is disappointing. Go to Mission College for ochem.
Harrison is always accessible outside of class. I went to office hours every day and used his second lab section as more office hours. Willing to walk you through concepts from start to finish 1 on 1. Grading is very specific but he will go over every assignment with you before you turn it in. Tests are hard! Need to be willing to ask for help.
Grading critera is unclear/random for labs. Few hw, 3 quizes. Tests are difficult. Tougher than average ochem class. So many people are at office hours there is always a line for help. Sometimes his answer keys are wrong so double check with other students. Study groups are a big help if struggling. This class takes a lot of time. Maybe try mission
Take the class literally anywhere else. Not enough characters to explain all of the reasons to avoid this prof. Does not use Canvas, weird grading, never had rubrics, condescending. He knows O-Chem well, ofc, he is just absolutely horrendous at teaching and helping others to learn and understand the curriculum which is unfortunately his entire job
Honestly, he was such a nice guy. Super supportive. He knows the class and material is super difficult and is willing to help u anytime. He is very accessible always very early to his office hours. he even gave pep talks before the exams. His exams are quite difficult but he has many practice problems that are similar.
Blaine is a cool guy and would tell great stories but he is a really tough grader. His labs were the hardest part because they are from a lab manual which is unclear and requires a lot of preparation. He also grades for accuracy and isn't clear about what he wants so your labs will be holding back your grade.
Harrison is a good professor, he's very patient with students and though he is a tough grader if you ask him questions on homework or labs he will answer them and help you the best he can. You will need to take out more time to study for this class than most but it should be expected with a high level course.
Tells hilarious stories in lectures and is good at teaching the material. The way he grades labs is bs though.
Dr. Harrison is the toughest grader I've ever encountered. More than half the class dropped throughout the semester and many of the students who made it through to the end said they'd have to retake the course because of how difficult it was.
He's a very strict grader and wasn't really approachable. Anytime I approached him w a question he seemed very passive about it. I thought class was hard but somewhat understandable, until it came to test days. His tests were always so different than his practice problems and what he taught. Would recommend another professor if you can take one.
The worst part of this professor is he puts NOTHING on canvas. Everything must be handed out with him so it's hard to keep track of things like upcoming assignments and exam subjects and he doesn't post any study resources. Take at your own risk.
I don't unf
I don't understand the negative reviews. This professor is so sweet and very funny.. good with puns also. He's one of the nicer professors I've had. It's a tough class, but it's supposed to be. He made it very enjoyable.
Doesn't teach; taught myself. 1/3 dropped after 1st exam, (52% avg), no curve. Disorganized grading, frequent homework/slide/exam errors. Condescending when asked questions. Material is out of order, & very rushed. Tests are harder than coursework and include uncovered content. Grades rely solely on exam grades.Chem & STEM majors failed this class.
The review below surprised me. I found this professor caring, approachable, and never condescending. As an introvert, I still felt comfortable with him. He's a tough but fair grader. If you study, you'll do well. I spent only weekend before exam studying and got solid test scores. He's funny and makes class enjoyable. Super chill guy!
