Tests are very fair, 2 midterms and final, none of which are cumulative. Uses great examples and sense of humor during lectures, which are worth attending. He knows a lot about the subject area as well.
Hilarious! He references celebrities and Harry Potter and Star Wars which was fun. His notes are really good fill-in-the-blanks type notes that you can download and print off. But you won't get everything if you don't go to class so go! Plus he's very interesting. Read the textbook as well. Exams are farely easy.
Final exam doesn't test on concepts, tests on memorization of random facts and figures from text and lecture. Lecture notes not useful for final.
Worst prof I have ever had. His notes are full of mistakes (new ones are found every class) and when students bring them up, he gets confused!!!! I have tried to get help a few times, and his responses are not helpful at all . On top of the lame and useless teaching strategies, the text as 135 dollars and we only used a few chapters and are now lef
Good prof, could have been better but he is new to teaching and a PhD candidate so you really can't expect wonders. Things could have been more clear but I think he did a good job. He tried very hard to answer questions and responded to emails right away. We really didn't use much of the text but I'm not complaining. Definitely a decent prof.
worstest prof in my life
not a horrible prof.. but hard to stay awake in his class. he's quite boring, but his class isn't hard. just read textbook + skim over his notes. best thing about taking his class is that his tests for psyco 105 weren't cumulative, saves a LOT of studying time.
Comon give the guy a break, he is a grad student not a professor. He was helpful and tried his best to make class interesting and involve students. Very nice and helpful. Not much work from the text but who cares, notes from class were just fine. I thought for his experience he was much better than many people who have been in the field for years.
Great professor. Some previous reviews have not been great, but I think this was due to the fact that it was his first year. He's great, makes class interesting, and is clear about his expectations.
Great prof. He really ensures that everyone enjoys his class and has the opporitunity to do well. His system on E-Class is fantastic: allowing him to be there whenever you have a question. He really tests your knowledge, but he does it with a great frame of mind. Highly recommend.
Mullins is great, makes coming to class enjoyable. Posted notes are great guidelines, but leave out some information that is on tests so attending class is recommended. Tests are fair, two midterms and a final, all non-cumulative. Good discussions online and enjoyable demos in class. With minimal studying/reading you can expect around 60-70%.
Professor Blaine is amazing. He's hilarious - he matches almost every important concept to an interesting video, which is great for helping you remember them. Unfortunately, this class has SO much information that spending class time on Simpsons' episodes means less time to cover the rest of the material. Miss a single class, you miss out huge.
A great prof. He makes you actually want to go to class, just because its always something different. He puts up many videos and pictures that make the material a lot more interesting, the notes are very straight forward, and the exam is completely based off of them. Although don't take a morning class because you may be tempted to sleep...
Make sure to read the text book when studying, his tests are equal part notes, lecture and text book. Pretty easy class if you show up. Exams are not cummulative which is a life saver!
Easiest class EVER. Make sure to go to class, to write down his notes because he tests on them. Exams were half from his notes and half from the assigned readings in the textbook. What I did was combined class notes w/ textbook notes and BOOM, finished the class with an A. Not curved, which is weird for a 1st year class, but the exams are very easy
Pretty awesome prof. His lectures are always fun and interesting, and he incorporates alot of humor into them. Attendance is pretty mandatory though because he leaves blank parts in his notes to be filled in during class lectures. His exmas are okay, its easy to get above a 70.
Prof. Mullins was the best I had this semester. I only took the class because I'm an Arts student who needs 2 science classes and wanted something easy. This turned out not to be as easy as it was fun and interesting. Any arts student who needs science credits should take this class with Blaine.
His class was really easy. Just attend class cause some of the examples he discusses are on his exams. TAKE NOTES! His online notes are not complete, you have to fill them in and READ THE TEXTBOOK. It will SAVE you. Otherwise, his exams are pretty straight forward and if you study his notes and read the textbook, it's an easy A.
exams are hard
His notes and lectures are insightful and interesting and the exams are pretty straight forward but watch out cause he might fudge your marks. Ask me how the hell i got the same exact mark on all my exams including the final, down to the billionth decimal place? incomprehensible... -_-
Monotonous, and sometimes is unsure of what he is even saying (he refers to his computer, pausing mid sentence). Textbook is very helpful and even quirky. His notes are helpful, but it 90% of his material is in the text. course has 3 mid terms (one considered a final) and they are NOT cumulative. :)
Blaine is a pretty good prof and has engaging lectures. His test aren't cumulative, which saves studying time, however you must know your class notes and textbook to do well. If your interested in Psych and good at memorizing facts then you should do fine.
Absolutely fantastic professor. His lectures were very engaging, and largely overlap the information found in the textbook. Exams were non-cumulative, and not unreasonably difficult. It's hard not to like Professor Mullins, and it's easy to do well in his class.
Good prof, pretty engaging. Cummulative exams, but less material means study EVERYTHING. Used lots of videos, examples, ect, which helped with remembering things
Lectures are quite interesting and notes are good. Need to study both textbook and notes from class. Exams are not cumulative so you have to know material well. Funny prof, really clear and fair. Would recommend him if you are interested in psych.
Professor Mullins was a really friendly and engaging prof. He makes psychology interesting and keeps the class engaged with youtube videos and such. If you treat this as a class and do all the readings I guarantee that you will get an A. Also, I think it is great how this class was not curved.
Not a fan of this guy. His lectures are interesting, but i hate his straight-memorization exams. If you dont mind memorizing line for line in the textbook, you are guaranteed an A.
misleading prof. On the first day of class he said we didn't even need to buy the text, that it was optional. Ya, buy the text or else you'll fail the class hard. His note are garbage! he tries to be all tech savvy with powerpoint and such but its just useless. read the text cover to cover and then maybe you stand a chance passing his class.
Definitly a cool prof. He will make the whole class of 300 laugh out loud several times a class. As for notes vs. text book his notes cover the majority, reading the text is a good idea if you want B+ or an A. He also has a tendency of hinting ie. "this would be a great exam question" so showing up and hearing what he has to say is a plus.
Interesting professor, but you don't really need to attend class to do okay.
You DEFINITELY 100% need to read and memorize the textbook definitions and concepts if you want to get a good mark. His exams are straight out of the notes and textbook. If you memorize both well, you're pretty much guaranteed an A
The best prof ever! Got me hooked on psych. His lectures and powerpoints teach you almost everything. Got B+ on midterms without reading textbook but I reccomend you read the chapters as his tests contain questions based off it. Read the chapters for the final and aced the exam. Makes class really interesting with videos and real world examples.
Amazing prof. Always excited to go to his class as his lectures are full of hilarious examples that help you understand. Best prof by far
Make sure you read the textbook, because half of all the exams are based on it, and things that aren't mentioned in class. Other than that, great use of pictures and videos in the class, laid back atmosphere, and makes sciences more interesting even for the Arts students. Seems like a good guy too. Changed hair colour at least 3 times though
He is an unreal prof, keeps class fun and interesting.
Great prof, my favourite this year. 80% of his tests are on lecture material, so you have to show up, but he makes it worthwhile. He's super funny and engaging and keeps it interesting, not that that's hard to do in a Psych class, in my opinion.
The most engaging and entertaining professor. I skipped a lot of my courses but made sure to always attend his class because it was so interesting. His exams are fair, but pay close attention to details mentioned in lecture notes that aren't in the book. Fantastic prof.
Nice guy- always replies to emails in depth (not right away though). Class is okay, but I was a 4th year student in a 1st year class and I found it a bit annoying... he tries to be 'cool' if you know what I mean (playing music, talking about sex, ext). You have to show up to class by the way.
Dr. Mullins is an awesome prof! He keeps the class going by playing lots of videos. He's really funny too! His exams are really fair. On his exams though he does ask questions on stuff that happens in lectures, (Like something from a video we watched) so go to class! it's a fun class anyways :)
He posts notes but you need to go to class to get everything. Asks questions on exams from what he says in lectures. Engaging and interesting prof. Generally a memorization class. Read the text and went to class but you should read both if you want an A. Very approachable.
favorite prof of the term! Interesting, funny and helpful.
Interesting enough.
Fantastic lecturer! He was engaging, funny and clear. Make sure you attend all classes and memorize the textbook. Great class to take.
Great prof! Made things easy to understand, and was very funny. Tests are a breeze if you read the text.
He is easy enough. His classes are pretty engaging and he talks about some interesting things. He tries to mix it up using videos and using class participation. Test mix of text/class, you need both. Personally I didn't like him, he's very condescending and mocks other's opinions. However this shouldn't impact your grade.
Kind of fair, his notes were good, humorous lecture, but sometimes played a trick on you.
Kind of fair, his notes were good, humorous lecture, but sometimes played a trick on you.
Guaranteed to be one of the best psych profs on campus. Just attend lectures and write notes. His exams are primarily based off his lecture notes. Aced the class without ever having to read the textbook
Great prof. Keeps things interesting, even if you're not interested in psychology. Attendance is important along with textbook readings. Do both, along with ppt slide review and it's an easy A. Really cool prof.
Boring lectures but interesting prof. Exams average.
BEST PROF BY FAR! Keeps the class interesting and is also very clear with his lectures and what is expected on the exams. Highly recommended!
GREAT prof! He is hilarious, kept the lectures interesting and entertaining. Exams were really easy and straight forward.
SUCH A GREAT PROF. definitely take his class if you get a change just watch out for the little details and side readings in the text book and you'll get a A+++ for sure! super interesting and gets the class involved. Totally recommend him
Best prof I've had! He was so fun and interesting and made the material seem so easy. I was never bored in his class and it's not curved so if you get 90 you get an A. Also non-cumulative, even the final. You have to do the text readings & know them, but overall it's fun and not very challenging so take it :)
Not necessary to attend, but Dr. Mullins gives great explanations and covers concepts in detail.
I had this guy for 104 and 105. He was a great prof with semi-interesting lectures. Just attend class, write what he says, memorize the notes and textbook and you are guaranteed an A. His tests are very straightforward, so if you don't do well in this course, blame is on you. Recommend for sure
While interesting in class, Blaine can be rather useless when needed outside of classtime hours. Several classmates including myself had made attempts to contact Blaine regarding class material or assignments only to receive feedback stating it was not his problem. I highly recommend taking his class, but don't expect more than an engaging lecture.
Dr. Mullin's lectures are engaging and sometimes interesting. Attendance is mandatory because a lot of the exam questions are based off of things he mentions in class. If you attend class, take good and thorough notes, and read the text, the exams should be pretty straightforward.
Had Blaine for both 104 and 105, and I highly recommend him. Classes are interesting and engaging, and he is fairly funny as well. Slides are great and as long as you keep good notes you'll do great. I recommend typing your own notes in class instead of just printing off his slides though. Exams are very fair. Great class!
Blaine Mullins is definitely my favourite professor! He is so nice and his classes are so interesting. He makes the classes a lot of fun and engaging! Exams are extremely fair! I never missed a class!! Go to class and the read the textbook and you should do good :)
He's my favourite prof, makes the class 10X more interesting with videos, cool facts & real applications. One of the biggest reasons I made it through my 1st year. Study the material & exams are fair, come to class bc the fun stuff ^ is on the tests. Textbook is really helpful if read before class, Blaine explains anything thats confusing.
He is my favorite pro in my 1st year. He can make the class so funny and interesting! He can explain every puzzled question if you have. To pick his class asap!
Great prof, also an award winning prof so i would try to get into his clsss
This prof explains concepts clearly with lots of examples. Videos and real life applications of psychology make this class interesting. Exams are fair - based on lecture notes and textbook. Laptop is recommended because the prof lectures pretty fast and he tests on the things he says in class. Overall, great prof.
Favorite U of A prof of my first year, hands down. Class was always entertaining, making lessons memorable. He's always excited to be there. I recommend him to everyone, especially any friends uncertain about taking psychology.
He does not post sample or past exams on e-class. The assignments does not relate to the class notes and textbook.
He is very vague on what is to be tested, and his exam was somewhat unfair. He posted no relevant exam questions. The practice he gave us was completely unlike the questions he listed.
Best prof I have ever had at the U of A. Uses amazing ways to help you learn the material. His exams can be tricky but if studied properly and take good notes in class it will be a fair exam.
He's alright. Funny at times, but tries a little too hard. He IS a very hard-working teacher and tries his best to explain concepts and have interesting slides. I would recommend him but I wouldn't really want him again.. I feel bad though he's a really nice guy and his exams are decent
Great prof. Actually cares about students and tries to make the course interesting. There are a couple of things on his tests that you would only know if you showed up. He didn't talk much about what would be on the test. But tests were pretty fair. If you went to class, looked at the notes and glanced over the textbook you should be fine.
Blaine is the bomb, by far the most interesting professor I've had at university so far. Exams are a little difficult, you need to read the textbook to do well for sure because not everything is covered in class, but his fun lectures make up for that! I constantly look forward to his class!
Blaine is an excellent prof! Good lecturer and always very clear with concepts. Uses different kinds of media and video clips which keeps class pretty interesting. Very knowledgeable and he makes the entire class burst into laughter at least once a class. Read the textbook, read the notes, come to class and it's not hard to do well. Take him!
I took this class primarily because Professor Mullins was going to be teaching it. His teaching style fits my learning style perfectly. I looked forward to going to all of the lectures, not only because he did an amazing job of presenting the material, but he also gives you a chance to apply the theory to yourself. HIGHLY recommend. He's amazing!
Awesome prof! Awesome lectures! you have to take him
AMAZING PROF!! I have never rated a prof before, but felt like this one needs it. He absolutely loves what he teaches, exams are fair, but you'll need to read the testbook as well as the notes. You should know details of experiments (from the notes), and Pay attention in class! Overall though, best psych prof yet.
Interesting and funny in class, shows a lot of videos to engage students. Very open and approachable. Exams have a few random, seemingly irrelevant details but overall pretty easy. Attend the class for videos (he tests on those) and take his class if you like reading the textbook, because he doesn't go over everything in class. Good first year prof
Mullins is actually THE best professor ever. He's such an engaging professor and his lectures make concepts better to understand. This was a night class (3hrs) and I was awake from beginning to end. I had fun in this course. His exams are SO fair. Go to class, take notes, read the textbook, and you'll do great. Once again, he's the BEST!
Dr. Mullins is among the best professors I have ever encountered. He is clear, humorous, and just really knows how to TEACH. Going to lecture is very important as exam questions will pertain to class activities/videos shown... But paying attention is made easy as his lectures are well-structured and very engaging. Outstanding.
I really don't like him. He tests the things he said, the videos he showed in class. If you miss some contents of his saying or videos. Then you will be in big trouble. His notes are useless, no sample exams, practice problems and past exams in eclass. The assignments are totally irrelevant. If you choose his class, I have to say, take care!
A very fun, engaging class with demos and videos. Don't miss classes or you're screwed for exams. Read the textbook, write down notes during lectures and you will be well off. Tests are based on things discussed in class, opts, and textbook.
Here's the thing (unbiased perspective): He makes lectures pretty fun to attend. His exams are simple (A-D MC options) and he does not try to confuse you. However, you MUST attend his class in order to listen to what he said or showed. Textbook is actually not THAT important (2-3 questions on exam); what he says in class is WAY more important.
Blaine's great, he's nice and really funny throughout the course! You can tell he really likes Psych, and it's reflected in his quality of teaching. Go through the textbook because there's a few questions on exams. MAKE SURE TO GO TO CLASS. He gives a lot of questions based on in class examples, so if you write those down, you're golden.
Blaine gives the easiest exams known to the U of A. He is funny and is great at explaining psych terms in lecture. His notes are straightforward and his exams reflect that. Definitely a must for PSYCO 104&105 for a high grade!
Probably my favourite professor. He explains concepts really well using different ways such as pictures, videos, analogies, and exercises. Class is always exciting and he's a funny guy, really nerdy too. His tests are always fair. I try to get into his classes when I can.
great prof!!! SO entertaining and engaging. attendance is MANDATORY because alot of questions on the tests are videos he shows during class or things he says. GREAT PROF!
Blaine is a pretty decent prof. He's good at explaining concepts and makes lectures interesting; he's also pretty funny. Attendance is mandatory because you'll need his notes for the tests.
He definitely cares about his students and tries to engage them which is what I loved about him. He can be very easy but only if you come to class, pay attention, and take notes!! Textbook reading is pretty mandatory too. If you do these 2 things, his exams will be a breeze.
Good lecturer – explains things well, makes use of PowerPoint + videos and does occasional demos. Pretty helpful during office hours too. You’ll be fine if you come to class, take good notes (this is key) and read the textbook. Personally I didn’t find the course content all that interesting but my friends thought otherwise.
Go to class and read the textbook. That will be enough to ace the course.
I did not do as well as I would have liked in this class. However, that being said Blaine is an amazing lecturer, his class is super engaging and really fun. Psychology is probably just not my thing.
Amazing prof! Blaine is hilarious and very helpful when things aren't clear. He makes sure he's answered your questions and if he hasn't he tries to explain it again in a different way. His exams are mostly based on his lectures although they overlap with the textbook. I really enjoyed this class and recommend Blaine for it!
very interesting class, amazing lecturer. helpful in general. I found his exams very difficult and never did well for some reason even though i took it as an elective
What a wonderful professor! I had him for 105 and loved him, so knew I had to get him for 258. Great notes, fair exams, and examples that help you remember the topics very well. He makes the lectures interesting, and you can tell he enjoys teaching.
Absolutely loved him. Best prof I've had by a landslide. Very easy and fair tests if u show up to lecture and read the textbook. Hes so funny and shows tons of videos and clips for examples. Amazing lecturer. BEST PROF! Highly recommended :):)
Absolutely fantastic! You do really need to attend class. The notes he posts online are more of a guideline for taking your own notes in class. He is always willing to stop and explain, even slashing material from the exam if need be. I am signing up for a class just because he is the prof.
Blaine is absolutely amazing. One of the best lecturers I have ever seen. His exams aren't easy- but they aren't difficult if you attend lecture, take notes and read the textbook. Great class. I can't wait to take another class with him. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Blaine is great. You do NOT want to miss his lectures. Why? 1) He tests on things he says or shows in class. 2) They are pretty fun. His exams are SO fair, and pretty easy, IMO...thus you need 90% to get an A. Read the textbook for clarifying things (~5 questions on exam) and study a little...you will do great!
Mullins is an amazing guy, kinda awks at times but otherwise he was an amazing prof! The class itself is kinda dull, and I found his class participation marking inconsistent (15%), but besides that he definitely was a good prof that made classes interesting, and assessments were fair!
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING PROF! You must attend lectures, but that's okay because he keeps it interesting and shows relevant and interesting videos. He does post is notes online but they are more of an outline. Tests were pretty average, there were some questions from the textbook but mostly they are straight from his lecture. Take his class if you can!
Class median for the final exam was 83%. Wow. Thank god, this class is not curved, and 90% is an A. He is an amazing professor, and the lectures are so entertaining. Put some effort (combined with free 20% from RP and IL) and there is no way you shouldn't get an A- in this class. Great class, and highly recommended!
I know everyone LOVES him, but I only like him. Some of his tests questions are questionable, but with studying, alright. The class does SO well though, so it can be stressful at times. Lectures are alright, kinda interesting, but he tests on what he says, and talks too fast sometimes. His non-cumulative tests automatically make him great though!
This class is definitely engaging for a first year psych class. Attending class and taking well-structured notes will definitely make the exams easier. Great professor.
EXTREMELY EASY!! He was my favorite prof in first year. Make sure you write down EVERYTHING he says when answering the questions he puts up on the overhead! You will be tested on it and if you have the answers it is super easy. Also pay attention to videos/examples used in class. Awesome guy. Very easy tests if you go to class
Great prof! Seriously one of my very favourites. He works really hard to make class interesting and interactive. His exam questions are mostly from his notes, a few from the textbook. Some of his exam questions can be a little sloppy and badly written so keep an eye out for that.
very engaging, interesting lectures!!! funny! helpful with questions. Tests are all multiple choice.
Amazing prof !! Not officially done the term yet, but his class is my favourite class to attend. I look forward to it, he makes sure to keep almost everyone in a 450 person class interested, which to me is pretty outstanding. Midterms are all multiple choice, and if you studied and read the book you will do fine.
Mullins is fantastic. He cares about students, and his efforts to make class interesting are evident! The difference between an A+ and an A/A- is purely based on minutiae found in the textbook or in lecture notes. That being said, it's possible to get a low A or a high A- in this class by purely doing one or the other. Highly reccommended!
Did not like Mullins at all....not bad at lecturing (he's pretty funny) but he talks way too fast and you have to write it all down as he tests on the most obscure examples and dates he's mentioned. Writing textbook notes also takes forever, would not recommend if you have a heavy course load. That being said, content isn't very hard, just memorize
Blaine Mullins is by far the best professor I have had the pleasure to come across so far in university :) he is engaging, hilarious, and he makes learning so easy. you do have to go to class and actively take notes, but the class is so awesome that you won't want to miss it anyways. Blaine is seriously the best
Most people in the class found Mullins engaging but I found the way he lectures irritating. His powerpoints are laced with useless youtube videos/songs that waste class time. His notes are terrible and actively contain wrong information (that is clarified in class). Go to class and buy the textbook because he tests on both.
Hes really funny guy and his lectures are almost always interesting, and i looked forward to his class. For his tests you definitly need the textbook.. he tests very detailed random facts from it and if you didnt read that section, you wont be able to know the answer.
Meditation Psych. Interesting night class. Mullins 300 level psych exam format are usually non-cumulative, about 60% MC and 40% SA. Found he rushed through the last lecture to finish the course without elaborating on concepts, but took hard question off on final to compensate. Sucks that he probably is not going to be around next year (budget cuts)
Write down everything he says, and study that. Reading the textbook is recommended, but personally I found that I didn't need to in order to get a decent mark. He was a kind prof, and I'd recommend him to anybody planning to take 104.
Not the best night class. Class attendance is mandatory. He doesn't explain concepts as well as he should have. Exams consisted of mc & Sa. Reflection paper graded on "gut feeling." If he thinks you are making up the meditation experience - he will fail you. No textbook needed.
Blaine is AWESOME. His lectures are hilarious. Probably my favourite professor of my first term. Write down all his notes and read the textbook and you should be golden! All of your grade is based on two midterms and a final but there is a 10% research component. I couldn't recommend him enough. My friend and I made toasts in his honour.
Great professor. His lectures are entertaining and engaging and his exams quite fair (although some questions can be quite vague). Attend class, write down as much as you can (because notes are bare bones), and read the textbook and you should be golden.
Attendance is mandatory as the exams cover both lectures and the textbook. Dr. Mullins said if you're ok with below a B, you don't have to attend class, which was very true for me. Lectures are interesting and go by fairly quickly. The three exams were not cumulative, but the last two were worth more.
Very engaging prof, keeps classes interesting and very entertaining. He always jokes around and showed us funny videos in class! He speaks clearly and is willing to help out if you are having any problems. Would highly recommend this prof.
Great guy, he posts all of his notes online as well has somewhat fair tests. Make sure you pay attention to everything he says because its probably going to be on the test
Funny in class but did not find him very useful when it came to asking questions in class. Rather go to his office and ask them personally.
awesome prof. really interesting lectures, you just need to go. most of his exam questions are from his lectures - some from the text, but not very many.
His class was very fun and enjoyable to attend. However, you really have to take time to memorize the notes and read the textbook. He tests on dates! I spent way too much time studying for this course than I originally had planned. With enough studying, I pulled off an A on the final. I did bad on my midterms because I didn't study enough though.
Dr. Mullins was great. I really enjoyed the course (Psych of Meditation) and learned a lot. Readings were interesting and relevant. Would definitely recommend.
Lots and lots of information, very fast.
Blaine's awesome - he makes lectures engaging and fun, and he's approachable when you need help. If you do your part, he will help you whenever you need it. But read the textbook. Seriously.
Dr. Mullins does an excellent job at engaging students and keeping material relevant. He approaches concepts from various perspectives to facilitate understanding. He also seems like a genuinely caring person. Would recommend.
Was the hardest class I took in my semester. A lot of memorizing. Gave me a bad impression on meditation. What was supposed to be a relaxing class turned into the most stressful one.
I personally didn't like this guy. He speaks way too fast in class so you end up missing key info. He is useless to ask any questions, you're better off asking your friends. His tests are easy so take the course if you need a GPA booster. But stay away if you actually want to learn the material, since this class is pretty much pure memorization.
I really enjoyed Blaine's class. He gives you pretty basic note power points which require you to attend class and write down what he is saying because that is how he explains his general concepts. I overall really liked him, but you can't expect any easy course. It requires studying, but it is also fun :)
Recommend him for engineers! Just go to class and pay attention and you'll do great. He makes class interesting too, so paying attention isn't very hard. I found that there were barely any questions from the textbook on his tests.
Great teacher. Genuinely interesting class. Best prof I've had so far.
Tries really hard to make classes engaging and largely succeeds. Interesting material presented in an interesting manner. Little bit naive in the realm of gender politics. As a woman I was offended a few times. Good intentions, just uninformed. Some of his analogies are clearly pitched at frat boys.
I had him for 104 and was excited because I heard good things but I found that he went through things super fast and it was really hard to keep up. However I gave him another chance with 258 but didn't last more than 2 weeks. I can't stand his teaching. Though 258 is a science class his teaching style is definitely more suited for artpsych classes.
Disrespectful and condescending to his students. Memorize what he says and you will do well - no room for expansion of knowledge or critical thinking. I would have enjoyed the class to some extent if it weren't for his rude comments and conceited attitude.
Very good at engaging students and keeping them focused. However, he sometimes glides over information that is on his tests and should be highlighted more in his teaching. Yes, he will probably offend some people in both religion and gender. Apart from that i think he is a good prof and his tests are fair.
he is not understanding at all, literally be expected to study the entire textbook and his lecture notes, goes through concepts super fast and considering that psych 104 is a first year elective super tough tests and grader
Coming to lectures isn't enough to do well on his exams. His lectures were awesome!
I took psychology 104, 105 and 258 with Blaine because I love his teaching style so much. He makes the topics very interesting and uses a variety of teaching mediums. Every time I ask him for help with a question he is always helpful and welcoming. Cognition was a fun class even though it was 3 hours long.
HAH. i wish luck to whoever thinks they can get over 3.0 on his midterms. he asks the most spontaneous things on his tests (you literally need to read every single word in the textbook). this would all explain how the class averages are always so low. and he tries too hard to be funny.
Attending the lectures is key in order for you to do well in his class. Lectures were fun and interesting, and he shows a lot of videos and references specific examples that will show up on his exams. His tests are very fair, as long as you put the work in you can do well. Would definitely recommend taking his class.
His lectures are hilarious, but his tests are harder. You gotta go to every class because he includes specific references from his lectures on his exams!
The first month of the course was a joke. I found the information useless and boring. After the first midterm it got better. Classes are amusing. Exams are extremely specific to certain points from the lecture that attending is mandatory.
Blaine is an incredible teacher. Honestly probably the best person I've ever seen at creating an interesting, fun, learning environment. BUT, bewarenot an essay class. He does 2 midtermsthat's it, so that's nice, but they are hard. If you want a B or higher, you will need to work. Never skip, write down everything (even movies+stories) i enjoyed!
Has a high rating for his ability to relate ideas to yourself which you'll find funny. Be warned this is an art course because it is an art course and should remain an art course due to its lack of critical thinking. Weak class if your trying to build an education, put your money and time into an actual meditation class.
I've always liked Blaine as a prof because he makes the lectures interesting. However, this past semester he changed the grade-to-letter conversion on the syllabus AFTER the final exam. This was after he clearly stated in class that it would not be scaled down. I've never felt more cheated in university. If you care about marks don't take his class
He's super funny and respectful towards all his students. I'm an arts student but I really enjoyed his lectures. Barely read the textbook except for the final. It's best to attend the lectures if you want to at least pass- but trust me, his classes are really interesting and entertaining! I would most definitely recommend taking his class.
Blaine has been one of my favorite profs in the 3 courses that I've had with him at the U of A. His lectures are always interesting and he has many exercises to promote involvement during the class. Be ready to take notes though and show up to class because he tests on what he says. Due to the necessity of taking good notes I always pay attention.
Blaine is a great lecturer and teaches a very interesting class. Meditation psychology was fun to learn about and I would love to take another course like it. Take this course because: -exams are not cumulative -interesting lectures -in class meditation sessions -straightforward material Cautions: -lots of scientific articles to read
Taking this as an elective? Think again! Passing Blaine's class requires full class attendance PLUS reading the book back to back. He's test questions are completely random and out of no where. Definitely a horrible course for someone with a full course load!!
Overall, I ended up really enjoying Blaine's class. The material for the 1st midterm and slightly past is quite boring, but the course becomes very interesting later on, so hang in there. I HIGHLY recommend having a laptop so you can type as he talks adding onto his online power points. Blaine tests specifically on videos and examples from class!
Wasn't very clear with what you were going to be tested on. Some questions were out of nowhere and opinionated.
Blaine is extremely knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches. I personally found most of the content in the class to be dry, but Blaine makes it funny and bearable. His tests were usually a good chunk from the text and the rest from lectures. However, if you just read the text and never went to class you'd get an average mark.
Multiple choice exams are very challenging and tests on VERY specific information. Need to be ready to work if you want to do decent. However, I found that even with excellent study habits I struggled. I'd avoid this class and prof in the future.
Blaine Mullins was awesome, hilarious lectures. I thoroughly enjoyed his classes. Attendance is mandatory, he notes are very incomplete and require a lot of filling in. His exams are on the tougher side, but they're not cumulative. The questions are very specific rather than on general concepts. Research participation isn't fun, but an easy 10%.
Great prof! Made psychology that much better. You won't need the textbook, mostly lecture orientated, however i found it helpful to read some parts which i found unclear. You have to write notes in class of what he's saying, that will be the exam. Great rod, super hilarious and interesting.
Professor Mullins is definitely charismatic although I found him quite arrogant. Any student who innocently questioned his material with some hypothetical situation was always shut down and belittled. In addition to that he rarely acknowledges students hands to ask a question. However he was clear and precise with his lectures so the class was easy
Made lectures super interesting and engaging. Super helpful if you see him during office hours. Exams cover material from lectures and textbook so be prepared. 1010 would recommend!
I could not say enough great things about Mullins. Classes are interesting, funny and very much necessary. Bring a laptop to class because a lot of the class will be relevant, if this is done along with reading the textbook you will do great (older editions are okay).
Very funny and entertaining lecturer! The course content is very interesting! You have to have a decent memory to get a high mark.
Mullins is an amazing prof! So passionate about meditation! This class was very different but it changed my life! He introduces you to a new way of living and seeing things! Lots of reading and tests on details but if you want to see your world change, take this class! Highly recommended! Be open, work hard and you'll do great. Definitely worth it!
This guy made me hate psychology and myself. Although topics had the potential to be interesting, there was so much detail and it was taught so quickly, that come test time it just was not possible to do well. Class average was a C-D+... he also has the tendency to be quite disrespectful and rude to students. Avoid, for your mental health.
A professor has never made me feel so badly as Blaine. He's blatently rude to students, often answering their Qs in class with a simple "No, on a test you'd get a 0". Rather than gently explain the correct answer. Class avg is C-D+. I used to have self esteem, now I leave class sad and ripped off. I am paying to feel bad and uneducated.
I found that Professor Mullins always tried to put a fun spin to the class. Though some of the content was a little dry, his powerpoints with many pop culture references would make the lectures more interesting. He is also quite funny and often makes jokes.
Blaine Mullins is a god amongst professors. These posts that he talks too fast are wrong, he even pauses to check we're all keeping up. Dude is hilarious, has awesome pics and videos to break up his slides, super passionate and always told us about cool studies, very intelligent, tests are hella fair. Honestly wish he could teach all my classes.
Rude, fast talker, no respect for students. His last two midterm marks averaged at a D+ for a third year psychology course where averages should be around a B-B+ and he wouldn't do anything about it. He even blamed the low averages on the classes inability to properly prepare for his tests. Worst prof ever.
Blaine is extremely condescending to students and doesn't know how to write exams. He has implicitly called us incompetent, blaming the whole class for the low averages (in the C-D+ range). We are all third and fourth year students, Blaine. Guess who's the common denominator? He also refused to adjust the grades, but I suspect he'll be forced to.
It's a pity because I rather enjoyed some of his other classes but this course was something different. It is hard to study bc you have to incorporate skeleton slides with detailed point-form notes from class, connect them and make sense of core concepts for yourself. He found a correlation that would be found in any class to justify the low grade
Blaine was a terrible prof; he talked very fast and made a lot of errors. Many of his examples were poorly explained and didn't make sense. The exams were OK but there were always some unfair questions from the old edition of the textbook. The grading for this course was a fiasco because he was disorganized and careless with his syllabus. AVOID!
I've taken 4 classes with him and really enjoy his lectures; he's funny and integrates pop culture to make information clear. His lower level exams are all mc and the questions are reasonably difficult; his higher level written are too specific and the written are unclear as to what they're asking. Overall AMAZING lecturer but unfair exams for 300.
very straight forward, his slides were simple and majority was summarized from the textbook. obviously the textbook elaborated on some topics, including things he didn't mention. non-cumulative, unless you miss a midterm, just let him know and the midterm content(and weight) will be added to your final
Questions on exams are almost always referring to content learned in lectures. Exams can be easy if you paid attention well in class.
explains concepts clearly. His lectures are interesting and fun. There are also occasionally Videos and activities to keep the class lose and into it.
I really enjoyed Mullin's teaching and had him also for 105. He's a good instructor: fair, explains things well, and interesting (albeit quirky sense of humour sometimes). You will need to read the textbook and attend class (he gives hints!). Also, always ask if there will be a bonus question on the test ;)
Blaine Mullins is a champ! enough said!
Dr. Mullins is an amazing professor. If you put in effort to go to his office or show you care he'll put in the effort to help you succeed. His exams mostly come from lectures and differ from the text quite a bit, so you should attend class, but his class is always enjoyable. He doesn't test you on small things, but on how well you understood it.
Mullins is a good guy and he makes the course interesting. Most of his test questions are easy, but a few are quite tricky. He will test lots of spoken fyis so make sure you get everything that he says down. He tests a little from the textbook, but mostly just the basics. Most engaging psych prof I've had hands down, and this was a night class!
Professor Mullins is the best prof and lecturer I had all term. His lectures are specific to the learning objectives of the course and were so fun to be a part of. His exams are very fair and if you study and come to class you will do well in the course. The textbook is very handy for practice questions and review of the concepts in the course.
Blaine is really funny and if can make some of the topics interesting. Beware, his notes are very empty so you must be ready to write. Also he will test on random things he says in class that you don't think are important.
Blaine provided a fun and interesting classroom environment that truly engaged my interest in psychology. His tests were based entirely off of the information in his lectures, making note-taking effective and essential, and test preparation relatively easy. It is notable that the textbook and associated online materials were worse than useless.
I really enjoyed his 104 and 105 classes, and jumped at the chance to do a senior level course with him (Psych of Meditation), but I honestly hated this course. While I can respect that he is steeped in meditative culture, he fed it as though it was a proven scientific cure-all. I also had a hard time getting further help on projects/while studying
Bless his soul. He is one of the best professors at the U of A. He keeps you engaged, and makes it interesting. Would recommend both his psych 104 and 105 classes.
I really like this him. His class is very interesting and he provide clear PPT for us to take notes. Almost every question in exams can be found in the notes. I would like to take his class again.
Mullins was great at lecturing. He was a little bit of an ass in person, but honestly I care more about lecturing well, and he was awesome there. Go to all lectures because his online notes don't cover what he will test on and take decent notes and you'll do fine. One of the easiest classes I've ever taken
Great prof! Lectures were long (80 mins) but he adds in fun pop-culture references and humour/sarcasm to keep class interesting (which was very appreciated). Textbook helps more than you think, read it. Attendance is important; references he makes in class sometimes aren't on powerpoints (and will be tested) so it's helpful to take notes.
Great prof! Great lecture! Examples, discussions, and videos he give during class are interesting and comes up on exam sometimes. His notes are almost empty, so you need to fill it out on your own. He doesn't put up full notes on eclass so you can't really skip class. But he is very friendly and exams were fair. I would take it again for sure!! :)
Great prof! Concept are explained very well. Exams are fair and are mainly based on lectures so be prepared to pay close attention and write down everything he says. I suggest typing as he talks pretty fast. Textbook is good for review but his notes differ from it quite a bit. I enjoyed this class, and would definitely take it again.
He tests on things he says so make sure your taking good notes, he's funny so its easy to pay attention. Reading the textbook isn't necessary. Showing up to class very important, with some effort this class is definitely an easy A.
Expect to take a lot of notes during his classes as he often tests on minor details in his exams. His lectures are filled with hilarious albeit sometimes unnecessary references to pop culture. The exams are non-cumulative and aren't curved. The class average was usually in the B - B+ range.
Do not skip Dr. Mullins' class unless you have someone willing to share notes with! The PowerPoint slides that are uploaded online are very minimal and can be tricky. Personally, his lectures seemed to dragged on forever, but he definitely got his points across articulately. Overall, a pretty good professor.
He tests a lot on his in class discussions, be sure to take notes and show up! He will test on videos you watch in class, etc.
This class is awful, C- class average on the first midterm, guess that's to be expected with having to memorize over a hundred pages of articles. If you want to lower your GPA sign up.
Do. Not. Take. This. Class. He is plain rude. When you ask questions, he makes you feel dumb and he is inconsiderate. Class average on midterm was SUPER low.
Participate in the class as each exam had a few questions on one of the videos we watched in class. He was great! The class felt more like a discussion then an actual class which helped a lot of us. Don't need to study off the textbook as most of his exam questions are on what he says. Always a bonus Q (on discussion done in class) on his exams.
Great professor! Pretty much only tests on lectures, but textbook is helpful to clarify concepts.
Blaine Mullins' personality is that of a kindergarten teacher in that he speaks to you slowly and as though you don't understand anything. He comes across as helpful, but as soon as you ask him a question he is rude, disrespectful, and shuts you down. We had to get the dean involved at the end of the semester due to his D average. Profs fault? Yes.
He always posts his notes before the lecture's so it was easy to pick out which part of the text book to read for that lecture. He often asks questions on the exam that pertain to things he says in the lectures. He also uses one of his fun lecture videos or demonstrations as a bonus question on an exam. Great Prof, would recommend!
Blaine delivered extremely entertaining lectures. I never caught myself dozing off. All the notes are posted online, but highly recommended that you come to class. Is a bit condescending when you ask questions, however he does answer them. Textbook was never used, but it is definitely helpful when studying. Does test on random points in class.
He's hilarious and engaging. Not a fan of his tests, very specific questions so you need to know as much as you can learn. If you miss his classes, you're screwed because a lot of the stuff he test on is not in the textbook.
Great lecturer but his tests are all lecture based and if you miss a class, you're screwed. Has many examples to help understand and super nice and approachable. Make sure you study for his tests!
Lectures are extremely interesting and he makes it easy to understand difficult concepts. Textbook is not nearly as mandatory as lectures, but helps. Tests are sometimes difficult because they are not solely based on ideas in the notes or textbook, anything said in class is fair game even if its not that relevant (eg. statistical facts).
I really enjoyed being in Psych 104 with Blaine and I learned a lot through the semester. However, we did not even begin to learn how to move objects with our mind as I had expected. If you expect to be proficient in the areas of telepathy or telekinesis by the end of the semester, you will be very disappointed.
Blaine is the greatest prof that I've ever had. I took his PSYCH 104 class and it was by far the most enriching and interesting course ever. He incorporates what we learn into his lectures and actually employs psychological techniques to help us learn more. You ABSOLUTELY have to attend his lectures to pass, but his are fun and engaging. 10/10
I really liked Blaine as a professor. His lectures were always very interesting and I enjoyed coming to class. However, the exams were extreeeemely specific to lecture information, so if you skip class often, you're kind of screwed. Make sure you get that online Connect code - the practice questions are super helpful! Overall, it was pretty good!
He's super funny, engaging and he makes it really easy for you to understand the concepts through analogies. Downside is that his exams are kinda hard, he tests you on things he talks about in class so make sure to take notes. Skipping gives you big disadvantage!!
Don't skip class. His tests are entirely lecture based. Tests aren't too bad, just got to make sure you know all specific details of each and every lecture, even the videos he shows in class. Non-cumulative. Graded on 2 midterms, a final and research participation. Final was easy.
Blaine is a really good prof if you attend class. You should write down anything he says, because it is all fair game. I would not suggest getting a textbook because he tests only on lectures. Research participation was easy and the final was straightforward. Would definitely suggest as a psychology prof and he's a funny guy
Absolutely phenomenal prof. Really engaging and hilarious. The given notes aren't great, so going to class and taking your own is a must.
If you want to do well in his course, write down EVERY WORD that comes off of his mouth! I went from a 70 % on the first midterm to a 92% on the final by legit noting down everything including his jokes and examples. Do not buy a textbook it's useless, however, print his notes and take a note of anything and everything that he speaks of.
Professor Mullins is a funny, engaging lecturer, and definitely the best prof I had this semester. That being said, DO NOT skip his class. Multiple questions on the final were about pieces of info that he delivered in person and didn't put on the slides, and he gave us one bonus question per test that you also would've had to come to class to know.
Blaine was extremely knowledgeable about his subject, and although his class required a lot of work and studying, his lectures were enjoyable, and he was always funny and kept us on our toes. My friends and I were also big fans of the spectacular, very eighties sweater he wore to our second midterm and our final. :)
Go to lecture and take notes, because the notes he posts are quite lacking in detail, and there were things he said in lecture that were not directly in the notes but were on the exam. If you study, make some flashcards, this class is a breeze. No assignments, non-cumulative exams, no lab. Lectures are funny and interesting, he's a good guy.
He is a pretty funny prof so the class does not feel long. Must attend every lecture though as everything he teaches in class will be on the exams. If you like skipping class and doing self study, definitely not the prof for you.
Blaine Mullins is a very interesting teacher from my experience with him. I'm stressing regular attendance and taking very good notes; do that and you should be fine. Any sentence he makes or video shown can be tested on. His notes don't contains what he says as they are not elaborate at all.
interesting, sense of humour, does move fast though so it's a good idea to add to his lecture slides on a laptop or print off the slides and write on them.
Blaine's lectures were funny and engaging. He posted class notes ahead of time and they were easy to follow. Reading the textbook wasn't essential but the one midterm I did read the text for I did the best on. Overall the class was really enjoyable.
Exams are designed such that if you dont write down every specific sentence he says in class, you will lose a lot of marks. The information missed CANNOT be found in the textbook. His lectures favor people who type their notes; he talks fast. Furthermore, he puts very little effort into his notes (e.g. poor grammar/punctuation + spacing). avoid
Was not a huge fan of this guy. Below average in terms of lecture quality and effort. Unhelpful during office hours, and our TA sucked: he had neither the lecture notes nor the text book. That aside, Blaine is funny. His lectures are entertaining. TIP: STUDY FROM YOUR LECTURE NOTES. I didn't even crack the text book and received an A.
Never taking his class again. tests on the smallest details to make sure you attend his lecture, doesn't matter whether you know the material or not.... not helpful and very condescending. if you take his class you will have to type notes because he talks too fast and doesn't care whether you got it all down, because his power points are bare bones
He's very intelligent and up to date on issues such as gender, race, sexuality, etc.. so that makes for interesting lectures. But his tests are difficult, and will often rely on specific details. His posted notes aren't the best, but they are sufficient. It's better if you print/download them ahead of time and write what he says on the notes.
Hands down the best prof I've come across. His lectures are interesting, lots of video clips and interaction. He makes the material very easy to learn by using tons of examples. Make sure you study notes and textbook for the test, don't skip lectures because he asks specific questions from the lectures on the tests. Overall amazing.
Going to lectures is so important because in the midterms and finals he asks things that were said. Also, the online textbook with practice questions was also helpful and I did much better on the midterm where I also studied from the textbook.
DONT EVER SKIP LECTURES. hes good at teaching, funny sometimes. some questions on exams are very very stupid. even if you walk out of an exam feeling like u got a 100%, u didn't. fine in lectures, but dont talk to him in person. comes off very rude and condescending.
Hands down my favourite professor. He makes coming to class fun and interesting with his jokes and lots of videos to make the lectures a little easier to sit through. It has been nothing but a pleasure being in his class and if he taught other psych courses I'd definitely take him! Just make sure you show up to class and pay attention!
Must attend lectures, powerpoints are pretty much just outlines of what he says. Also be able to write/type fast because he talks fast. Found his exams to be pretty random: half the questions were things discussed, half were just stupid and unrelated and meant to confuse you. Comes across condescending individually but lectures are entertaining.
Dr. Mullin's lectures are painful to say the least. Tested on useless meme videos with dolphins shown in class. Must show up to class to take down notes because lecture slides have 4 words per page. He comes across as condescending and cocky as he does not answer questions in class.
Took both 104/105 with him, it was the most exciting and fun lecture. He is very well organized, gives short (video) breaks in the middle of notes to help us relax. His exams are very lecture heavy so if youre willing to take decent notes; HE IS THE BEST PROF! TAKE HIM. (p.s. you must note EVERYTHING he says)
You MUST attend lectures because he tests basically 100% from them. Type your own notes, the notes he provides are just skeletons of what he teaches. I really loved the non-cumulative exams, this made it easy to do well and stay on top of the coursework. His lectures were entertaining. I loved the class! Gonna miss it.
One of the best profs I have ever had. His lectures are super interesting and he loves what he teaches. You must go to class and write down everything he says but if you do, the exams are easy A's. Tuesday Thursday classes can be long and boring but I never felt like his class dragged on. I would recommend him to everyone.
He's a great prof. Highly recommend that you record his lectures since his power points are not detailed and typing/writing everything he says can be a hassle. The textbook isn't needed much but I recommend lightly reading the chapters because at times he tests you on things that were not covered in lecture but are covered in the textbook.
He speaks clearly, note posted online wasn't enough, need to attend class. His class was amazing and never felt bored, I took his 104 as well. Exam questions were based on what he said in class and can find it in textbook. He is knowledgeable and overall a professor with good teaching strategy.
Blaine is an amazing professor. I had him for both 104 and 105, and I never missed a lecture. He kept his lectures entertaining, and is an overall funny and personable professor. Attendance is absolutely essential in his class however, as the midterms and exam are mostly based on the lecture. Attend class & take notes and you will be fine
A very caring professor with excellent lectures. He shows videos in class to make the content more entertaining. He posts notes online, but they are mainly skeleton notes as you need to attend class to obtain more detail about the content. Most of his exam questions test what he says in class, but there a few textbook questions as well.
Mullins is a beauty. While there is a lot of note-taking required in class, he makes it so fun and interesting by including tons of interesting and helpful videos and creating a great atmosphere in the class. His exams can be a little challenging though, since he does include stuff from just his lectures and from just the textbook. gr8 dude tho
Blaine Mullins was far and away my favourite prof. He cared about his students and made his lectures fun and entertaining. He tests on what he says, so get ready to know some random factoids, because he gets pretty specific
Blaine makes a class that could be pretty dull very interesting . He is funny and entertaining without being disorganized, his lectures are still very clear.
Really helped me a lot prep'ing for exams.
Teaching wise, he's okay. Lectures had fill in the blanks that were filled out in lecture, so you must show up. Though Blaine is okay for teaching, he is incredibly condescending and rude. He would pick random students to answer. He would also reply to emails saying to make friends and ask them, rather than actually being helpful.
Beat people I've ever had ever ever I i zipped through every reading with excitement and eassseee.
The readings were a breeze with this prof. Using unstuckstudy AI alongside the free textbook really helped me ace the class. Definitely worth taking if you're willing to put in the work.
