I would not recommend this professor. Not only does he provide incorrect information, in his lectures, occasionally, but he has a bad attitude. He looks down on people because they're at a junior collge instead of a 4 year school.

omg this is the most BORING teacher on the planet.he thinks he is so great & he nvr lets u 4get that he went to ucla!i hate this teacher.if u need to take another honors class/anthro class, dnt take him.he's the worst!u will jst get bored out of ur skull!
He is way too boring and provides wrong information for the course content throughout his lectures.

He was really really really boring! he's always not sure of what he's teaching! so if you have a way out of the class then get out of it!
If you don't love his classes or don't get an A the problem is you.His lectures are exciting, he makes you feel like you can ask questions. you can get over 80 points extra credit, test are straight from lectures and study guide.
laid back kinda guy. only 2 reports, few eaaaasy quizes, and 3 tests and more extra credit than you can handle.he knows his stuff and you can tell he loves anthropology and that comes through in his lectures.
he very biased about who he likes. he has favoritest and everything. it's so great having to listen and sit through a conversation between him and his favs..yup..
lighten up dude. and stop being so stingy about extra credit points. makes him seem like a jerk sometimes. nice guy though.
i guess when you dont participate in class its very hard for the teacher to carry a conversation with you, so he has to answer the questions of students who are more interested in the class and do ask Q's, guess thats how they get A's though.
He's ok.
True, his lectures may be a little confusing and boring, but antrho is naturally boring anyway. Read the book and you'll be fine. He gives so much extra credit, it's ridiculous. Do them all and it's impossible not to do well.
Do the extra credit, come to class and you'll get a good grade. It confussing and boaring some times but stick with it.
Yes, this class is an easy pass. Do the extra credit and always attend class. Even if you get bad scores in your test. You will be able to pass this class. Do the extra credit will help a lot.
He is so angry at all females, and angry about being bald. You will probably even have to write a paper about his baldness, he needs this to validate himself. If not for those things, he's the most boring professor you'll ever meet.
I don't know how I manage to get an "A". He curves the test which is a big help. If he didn't a lot of people wouldn't get the grade they were aiming for. Also he gives a lot of extra credit and it was a big help. Had to write 2 essays. I wouldn't recommend this teacher. Take someone else.
simple guy but challenging tests. but he will give you lots of extra credit.the only problem is thatyou will need to take road trips to his extra credit assingments. His road trips are very fun and very intellectual. overall he's very easy.
He is the most BORING teacher ever and even spits when he talks! His lectures are confusing and boring as hell.I personally think hes ****. Take advantage of all the extra credit b/c you will need it. He doesnt articulate his words- good luck with this class. also, expect to $ to do xtra credit
I thought Gibson was an awesome teacher. We watched alot of movies, and the spittle that forms on his lower lip is always fun to laugh at.
he's a pretty boring teacher. does not make the subject fun. you will fall asleep in his class. it will cost you money and gas if you want extra credit. good teacher, but boring lectures.
grades with a curve but is a very boring teacher
very nice but hard
GOD DAMN BORING CLASS!!!! IT WILL LOWER UR GPA haha DON'T TAKE HIM.....BUT HE GIVES A LOT OF EXTRA CREDITS THo....U REALLY NEED TO STUDY FOR TEST
very hard
Don't believe the nonsense from immature students who obviously didn't pay attention & study. You will learn a lot about evolution, biology, history, genetics, psychology, sociology and science from Dr. Gibson who is extremely knowledgeable about many subjects and an excellent teacher! Read all the chapters, do extra credit and you should get an A.
I am a 4.0 student and I received a "D" in this class. I paid attention, I spent more time studying for this class than any other, and this is what I have to show for it. This guy did anything to stop me from getting an a on anything, I got enough points off to get a B for using the word fur instead of hair, even when he had used the word fur..
He destroyed my G.P.A. I am an excellent student and I learned absolutely nothing in his class. I love school and learning new things but it just didnt work out in his class. It could have been me or him....aliens maybe.
Pretty easy class. second half was a bit more challenging then the first half of class
Professor Gibson is a great teacher. If you aren't already into the subject, then maybe you wont like it. I found the subject of evolution to be facinating and Gibson to be a very clear and knowledgable instructor. The class isn't a walk in the park. You have to apply yourself. Those students only have themselves to blame.
Very hard, dont take his class
take his class during summer..it's so much easier..he gives mad curve points.
If u are interested or love anthropology take him..if u don't : Go Somewhere else! He is a wonderful teaher, one of the best I ever had. Great sense of humor, grades well. If u are willing to listen, take notes and be attentive great! If u wanna sleep take somthing else.
you HAVE TO do the extra credit for an A. but it's easy. he grades on a curve and stuff. attendance is key.
Dr. Gibson is great!-- his lectures are very concise, take notes on everything and you hardly have to study! He grades tests on a curve and HTP students have to read two books in addition to textbook but easy stuff if you like science. Gives multiple opportunities for extra credit.
OMG! his class is sooooo hard. he gives hard quizes, hard assiments. besides, 70% of ma class mates have been dropt this class... i don't recommend this class.
This is not an easy teacher. His tests are killers and his labs are not that easy. Not helpful at all.
Nice, funny teacher. Not too hard. If you are not interested in the subject, might be hard for you. But overall, he is good teacher. Study the info on the study guides and you will do well in the class.
He was the most boring teacher I have ever had.
he is a nice guy but like they say teaching is not for everyone. he is so passionate about the subject matter. if you've never had a biology class in high school and you want a class not really focused on to much science this is it. the test are a little hard but passable.
Very hard class. Lectures are very boring, be prepared to sleep. Tests are not created from lecture material at all, all from the book which he does not use at all. Its all up to you, and the tests can be brutal. Monotone lectures and very difficult exams make for one very lame class. Avoid this one if you are looking for easy classes!
His class is pretty hard, i never slack off and anthro is usually easy for me butthis class was different. So BORING! Go over the studyguides, and READ the BOOK, he grades homework pretty hard, is sometimes unclear on what he wants, can be a jerk. There is a curve, and he does give lots of extra credit but i will never take again!!
He really knows his stuff. He actually reads the papers and runs the class like a real college class.Too many ELCO classes are too easy.
Class is BORING! LABS were OK, just make sure you have a good dirt sample. Tests are HARD...let's just say it got so boring i just didnt want to go to class anymore and failed. ;-(
his teaching was bad.
Great class...you will learn a lot. I took his honors class and it requires 3 books, so if you don't like to read don't take this class. He gives out study guides, but it is not straight-forward at all. If you work hard you should get a good grade. Oh, and he's a nice guy.
cool teacher hard on tests but very smart.
easy class
Gibson is great. Knows his stuff. Text not required if you take good notes and pay attention in class.
Well, this class is pretty difficult. There is a lot of information to memorize and is more of a physical science class than anything. If anthropology is genuinely interesting to you, Gibson is the teacher for you. He definitely knows what he is talking about. His tests are really hard though. However, he gives a lot of extra credit
Hands down the most amazing teacher. He's the reason I majored in anthropology. He's not hard, you have to be interested though. No surprises on the exams, if you show up to class, take notes you're set. I have had 4 classes with him, he is willing to help, has office hours, email. Believe me you won't find a teacher like him. Khat
friggin Lame-O Teacher i had him for Physicall Anth. and he is very very boring! you must go to the damn zoo and write a report on it, and it's a huge chunk of your grade
Very strict..takes off 20 points from your grade if you leave class early no matter what the situation is (this is on the syllabus) or if you answer the phone whether its an emergency or not. Tests and quizzes are hard, too much information demanded and most of the questions arent even from his lectures or the book.
This teacher is ridiculous. He lectures a tiny bit and then you're on your own reading 60 pages per chapter for his 5 chapter exams that he gives you a stupid guide that just tells you what to read..isnt helpful at all. When you ask him questions he'll give you a snotty response unless you kiss up 2 him. HARD tests. Good luck w/ Gibson. PS. BORING!
Extra credit is ridiculous. You have to go out of your way, drive somewhere far, pay money for parking and admission, take time out of your day to walk around, go home and write about it, turn it in and HOPE that you receive the points that you deserve. Honestly, it's not worth the time and effort.
He uses the tests that the teachers edition textbook provides. Unless your question is about his personal career, don't bother asking him. He doesn't actually teach in class, but you are expected to go.
Great, read the text and SHOW UP. If you dont show up then GOOD LUCK. He's clear, if you dont pass his class then you dont belong in college, Sorry. and hes funny.
Boring guy, makes corny jokes, loves talking to the girls in the class, HIGH textbook use on your own, hard m/c tests, long labs (writeup and 7+ charts), attendance MANDATORY or he takes off points from your final grade, can't leave the class to answer a phone call or that takes points off too...Hard guy and hard class.
A very boring teacher who specifically states in the highly mandatory class sessions that he does not lecture on everything on which he tests. If you don't show up to class, he'll drop you. If you do show up to class, well.... try not to. Anthro majors have to take his archaeology class, but everyone else should really find a different teacher.
Worst class I have taken so far. He is boring, according to other professors some of his assignments are pointless talks about himself a lot, some questions on the test were not reviewed in class, he will never answer questions about an assignment, very rude. He once made a girl cry, when she left he started laughing.
Wow, I've never had such a hard teacher in the 3 years I've been @ El Co. He doesn't teach well and expects you to know EVERYTHING in the book..even when it's not even covered in class. He's very sarcastic to his students and doesn't care about them, especially when they ask for help. I complained to my counselor about him. Unfair man.
If you don't want to **** up your GPA do not take him. He will make you attend til the end of class and then not pass you. His test are very hard however, he does grade on a scale and will take the highest score and that be the A. His test are impossible to pass unless you are a SUPER ANTHRO NERD.. Only wants to buff wha he knows.
I don't understand why people give him such bad comments. This guy earned his Masters in Dublin and his Ph D. at UCLA. As you can see, his passion is in anthro. If you want to learn from the best, take him. If you're looking for an easy A, take someone else. Also, extra credits are limitless, so there is no reason not to pass...
I've taken most of his classes. Three simple rules: take notes, read the book at least a little, actually show up for class. Anyone can pass his class so long as you do that. For 8 specifically, watch out for those Aztec/Mayan/Toltec god names! Make a chart so you can sort out who calls what god what name.
He's a good teacher. Lectures were interesting, he was very helpful, and up to a point, I thought he knew exactly how treat his students. His final test was "tortuous". It seriously was some sort of sick joke. What scares me is that some anthro wiz in the class probably aced it... and perhaps enjoyed it.
Super hard, expects yo uto be an anthro genius to pass his tests. If your in honors you have to do a ridiculously hard project at the zoo. You will hate anthro after his class. Dont take!
Pretty much THE WORST teacher I have ever taken. He is extremely difficult and I am by no means a lazy study, I even went to his tutor but his grading is just ridiculously harsh. Do yourself and your GPA a favor and stay far far away. Not to mention he has to talk about how he went to UCLA at least once every class section..yea yea...WE GET IT.
I dont understand all the negativity towards Dr Gibson. This is COLLEGE, people! When/if you transfer, there will be many other profs just like him who give a lot of test questions that are from the book, not just from lecture. This is good preparation for us transfer students! Material can be very dry at times, but his jokes are the greatest :)
TERRIBLE! He is so unrealistic and not helpful at all!?! He expects you to already know anthro, gives assignments that have the tutor center PACKED because they are just so difficult! The subject is so interesting and yet he butchers it for students, not to mention our grades! DON'T TAKE HIM!
BORING teacher, interesting things he says, but he is so monotone, only if you really like anthro. he'll keep you awake. Assignments are difficult, but he is very helpful after class and he offeres A LOT of extra credit. He tries to be funny. TESTS are the biggest points, if you really do study for the tests & take GOOD notes you can pass easily
I think Gibson is a misunderstood creature on here. Granted, he's usually boring and monotone, he teaches legitimately and is interesting if you pay attention. He also offers a TON of extra credit if you don't miss too many classes so even though his tests are difficult, there's no reason not to pass any of his classes.
Great teacher! I guess I'm the only one here that likes him. I found his jokes very funny. Tests are a bit hard, but he gives out great study guide and they're graded based on the highest score in the class, so it's fairly easy to get a good grade as long as you try hard. Plus, he gives out a LOT of extra credit.
I've taken a few of his classes, and they've all been interesting and informative. His tests can be difficult, but study and take notes and you'll do fine. I'm an Anthro major so I'm biased but I really do feel he's a great teacher. Cares about his students, loves the subject, totally worth it, you will actually learn the material in his classes!
I'm not one of those "worst class ever" commentors but.. worst class ever lol it's so hard 3 pages back to back for study guide is too DAMN much.. in return there's no hw a lot of extra credit cuz he know how complicated his class is.. His chapters and lectures are all over the place and so is the study guide..
Dr.Blair is a good man. His class can get boring, but you will definitely pass if you take good notes and turn in all the assignments. Lots Of Extra Credit opp.that will help your grade!
This course was extremely interesting! Gibson makes it really fun and does a great job at explaining the material and making it clear for us. Yes, it can be tough, but that's if you don't study and don't take notes. He's a sweet man and is very funny! I learned so much. His exams are sorta tough, but he goes over everything that will be on the exam
I liked professor Gibson he was a funny guy. He gives unlimited extra credit which is awesome since his tests are tough. He is cool but strict with due dates so be careful with that.
pretty dull, lectures were pretty random. the study guides he gives you are a mess and the tests are hard. the only good part is the unlimited EC opps he gives but other than that i would not reccomend.
I didn't ever get higher than a D on a test and i got a B in the class. I took advantage of every extra credit opportunity though
Fairly easy if you do the work and take notes. I didn't really use the text books since everything was explained during lectures. He has 4 tests but the first one is like practice and 2 assignments that count actually matter. He gives extra credit but its not as easy as you would think. It's easier to take notes and pay attention than doing the ExC
Fairly easy. Tests are okay since they're multiple choice & he provides a study guide. He also curves tests. Plus, endless amounts of extra credit. The only downside is that he often keeps you after class. 5 min. make a difference especially when you got work & he doesn't like if you leave. Little to much for me.
Pretty difficult, you do need to study, a lot, the textbook shows you no mercy each chapter is like seriously 40 pages long and small text, his lectures are interesting but his voice will put you to sleep. Labs are fun. He loves Ireland by the way.
I had no interest in this class before taking it, but I learned to love it. The subject material I found very interesting. He explains the material very well in the lectures. If you take notes, pay attention, and show up, you should do well. 1 midterm, 1 final, 5 tests in total, tons of Extra credit, handful of worksheets.
Although his exams are relatively hard, he offers unlimited extra credit. If you're dedicated enough to get an A in the class, then its very easy to do so. Just go to a museum once a week, and do other extra credits that he offers. Really nice and charming teacher.
This was the third class I've taken with Dr. Gibson. He's great, I love him! Grade is based on tests and quizzes, but they're multiple choice and he gives great study guides so it's pretty easy to get an A. Take good notes when he lectures because he doesn't always write down important stuff and take good notes on the videos too.
Do not recommend this teacher at all!!!! He's a boring teacher, I hated going to his class! Test are hard and must read chapters because if not you will fail
I had classes with Dr. Gibson over ten years ago, but I had to write here because I owe my lifelong anthropological interest to him. If you are a reasonably intelligent person with a willingness to learn, you will get so much from his classes. He inspired me to major in anthropology and I transferred to a larger university with full prep. Thanks!
I can never fall asleep in class but this guy brought me to the brink almost every day. He starts out every class with an excuse that he forgot something in his office or somewhere else and kills about 20 mins. Then drones on while showing slides the entire semester.
Gives out thorough study guides although some material must be found online. Flashcards combined with the study guide are your best bet for passing the class. Extra credit caps at 40 points, DO IT ALL and you're going to pass the class. Lectures are boring and drawn out and he will cover his trips to Ireland, a lot. Studying is a must!
He was not a good professor. He would talk to you like you are stupid, if you didnt understand something. he fails you on homework, and the tests are hard. he will kick you out of his class of you have more than 4 absences.
He is a great person to be friends with; however, his material is not delivered in an interesting way. To pass his tests you need to pay close attention to his lectures but his lectures are so boring that you will fall asleep. Its tough. I would highly recommend this class to those who are majoring in this because they will have the excitement.
If you need to take this class go to another college since he is the only one teaching archeology at ECC. My honest advice avoid this teacher, lectures are really boring, his study guides are a joke, and his test are really tough!
Pros: many extra credit opportunities. Curves tests. if youre 3% away from the nxt letter grade he'll bump you if u have good attendance. Cons: lectures are long but listen to what he says bc his power points don't have a lot of info. Take good notes. Must read chapters to pass his tests. Tests are difficult if you don't pay attention or read.
Two key things to note about Dr. Gibson. He forgives you if you mess up on tests and grades on a curve. He also throws you a bone if you show for every class and bumps you up a grade if you are 3% away. His class isn't hard if you pay attention and take good notes. He gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities too. My advice, do not miss class.
Gives lots of extra credit. Tests are detailed but he curves according to the best grade on the test. Material must be memorized and you have to pay attention. His tests are based on his lectures. Hardest part is not falling asleep in class.
He's a great professor. I took ANTHRO 1,2, and 3 with him. Pay attention to the lectures and read a bit from the book and you will have no trouble passing the class.
This dude is great. you will pass if you take good notes on lectures and by getting involved. Just pay attention to detail on work sheets
His class can be quite demanding, but getting an A is quite simple just as long as you put in the effort to do the extra credit. His lectures are going to be boring for the most part and his study guides are big walls of texts , so make sure to get good scores on the assignments and to get the highest possible score in the primate anatomy test.
His class is very demanding. His lectures are heavy and boring. His power points consist mostly of pictures and graphs. You must pay close attention to what he says and take very good notes. He does offer up to 40 points of extra credit which helps. I personally would not take him again, he constantly put me to sleep. VERY BORING
My experience w/ Prof. Gibson was okay overall. Clear grading criteria and he'll usually curve exams which can be really beneficial. Attendance is absolutely mandatory, try to never a lecture! A lot of people are giving low reviews because they say his class is hard but if you take notes in lecture and actually study (not cram) you can def pass.
Be prepared to sit through boring lectures everyday in Gibson's class. The study guides are useless so make sure your notes are good ones. Attendance is mandatory and if you do not miss a specific amount of classes he will bump your grade if you're 3% away. The one true good thing is there are ample chances to do extra credit.
I really enjoyed this class with Professor Gibson! This was only a GE Class that I was required to take but I didn't expect it to be so interesting! Gibson explains so much in class that you better be top notch in your note taking skills. Its not a hard class, but you have to be serious and study. Don't waste any extra credit opportunities either.
Professor Gibson's class isn't too difficult. He really knows his stuff. He does get very boring though so try not to daze off. He has 6 tests and one his take home. He also gives 40 points of extra credit and if you miss less than 2 classes you can get an 87 and still receive an A.
Professor Gibson's class can be demanding at times but is manageable if you put some effort. Textbook ended up being useless as he hadn't even gone through it. The books and readings are important and the study guides help very little. The tests are kinda hard but he curves every test by making the highest score the most points to score out of.
Professor Gibson makes what might otherwise be a rather bland subject interesting. His lectures are in depth, and he doesn't just read off his slides--but make sure you jot down notes about what he's saying, because sometimes he tests on it. Plenty of extra credit offered, and you know about all of the assignments and tests in advance.
Do not take! Test are really hard. He tricks you into listening to lecture, you fall asleep, then random subjects are the answers to the test. You can pass, but you need to really try, talk with other good students. Doest not give you a foundation for archeology. Only talks about his experiences. Book is useless. Only passed because extra credit.
Three required textbooks which he rarely referenced to in class, it was a hybrid class so tests/ quizzes were online. However, he doesnt fully prepare you for them. No homework, but that just means that exams are worth a greater percentage (80%) of your grade. Only way I passed was taking the extra credit opportunities (up to 40 points offered).
Dr. Gibson gives incredibly boring lectures and tests on what he says and what is in the textbook, not what is on the power point. He makes passing and arbitrary statements that end up on the tests for some reason. You cannot do well if you skip any classes. Incredibly boring and frustrating to keep up with. Do not recommend!
His power points consist mostly of pictures and graphs. Most of your notes will be based on what he says rather than shows. His entire class would be fine even if he is lecture heavy but only if he actually talked about the subject itself rather than himself. Most of the time he is talking about his personal experiences and nothing else.
Lectures in this class were very hard to stay focused on. The exams are also very very hard. Questions are very confusing and also the homework does not give clear instructions. You are able to get extra credit however, it is very difficult to achieve the credit. Wasn't particularly happy about this class and my over all grade. I was .38% from a B.
He does talk about himself and his own excavations a lot but I found it all interesting and overall I learned quite a bit in his class. I especially enjoyed the labs. I found his syllabus and grading easy to follow and the extra credit was very helpful. I wouldn't consider him to be "mentor" material.
I took this class as a "filler", and to my surprise it was more stressful than all my other classes combined. You have to show up to class period. The PPT's are useless since its mostly pictures and he speaks from the top of his head. gets off topic a lot and talks about his dogs and wife. Extra credit is crazy complex, save yourself the time.
Insanely difficult tests, focused heavily on things that aren't in his notes. He's incredibly strict on attendance and gets upset if students want to leave class to use the restroom. Lectures all day long, is too tough on grading, and doesn't stick to his material. Don't take him, its a waste of your time and your GPA.
He only gives a few quizzes and 4 exams online - he is strict about submitting. Some questions are hard to answer if you didn't pay attention to books/lectures/videos/movies and cannot be really looked up. He doesn't do many study guides, which makes it hard since there is a lot of study material. He does curve the grades though.
Worst teacher I've ever had, so confusing, study guides are so long & unclear, had to drop rather than fail. He's lectures are so boring trust me I tried to listen but its impossible he makes no sense. Really thought this class would be interesting but not with him. I never dropped a class before but his was just crazy please take someone else!!!!
Honestly didn't enjoy this class at all, I know COVID messed things up, but even during this time, he wasn't very helpful, and often redirected me to get help from a tutor. I definitely wouldn't suggest if you aren't interested in the class. Take something else as a GE class if possible.
Dr. Gibson is a very kind and enthusiastic man and that's good but he gets lost in the lectures sometimes. Grades come mostly from exams/quizzes which are hard to understand. Read the articles he assigns because that's part of the test. Take solid notes on what he says, it appears on the test too. He curves, but do extra credit too to get that A.
This was a ok class, the tests are curved which is a major plus. Make sure to take good notes on lectures because it will be on the tests. Good class structure with one discussion board every week. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities.
In the middle of a pandemic, it seems as if he does not want students to pass! No retakes on exams, insanely difficult exams unrelated to the book (or lecture for that matter), and does not understand that some of us are essential workers. Posts around 5 lectures a week with NO virtual notes, making it difficult to follow. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
This professor was disappointing. Most ppl failed his quizzes, which I feel was by design. Quizzes are worded in such a bizarre way, that you have to read the questions 5x before you can begin to decipher them. His ridiculously long study guides are useless and inane. No empathy, compassion or desire to see his students succeed or pass his class
This professor absolutely does not have sympathy for his students. Makeups are not available. Hour-long lecture videos that have absolutely nothing to do with the exams. You have a weekly assignment worth only 2 points and each exam is worth 70! The exams questions are wordy and focused on a small random detail, not found in the book or the lecture
Most boring lectures that are very hard to follow. His tests ask things you have never even heard of that aren't even in his notes. Most people would fail his tests. He makes it almost impossible to succeed even if you study hard. He is strict on ridiculous things like using the restroom during class. 3 words: frustrating, boring, stressful.
This class was difficult due to the amount of reading needed. There's a lot of material and be prepared to read it all, because it's all important to pass this class. Don't get behind in any work and go to all the exam preps, they helped a lot. Extra credit is also a bonus I would suggest taking advantage of. Though it was difficult I enjoyed it.
