Knows his stuff, but hated to ask questions because he made me feel stupid.
Good teacher, teaches very well! Take him if you can!
Good teacher, hard to know what he wants on tests, friendly
he's a nice guy, but his lectures are very scattered. he's hard to understand
unprepared for class, labs never worked, what a cutie!
Nice guy, but makes you feel dumb for asking question. Read book!
missed lots of class due to illness, helped me pass. great guy!
Great Teacher. Hysterical Facial Expressions. Demands you to know your stuff.
Good teacher but lectures are very scatered. Test are very hard.
Ok professor. Not enough time for tests and doesn't really teach test material.
read & take notes.....you'll do fine...don't let previous comments scare you
He cracks me up, makes a 4 hour lab go by much quicker
difficult class but he teaches it well, funny guy, study and it's easy
Not willing to work with students who have problems
one of the greatest chem teachers i have ever had. lectures are just example after example. go to discussion and you got it made.
Great teacher, but hard class. Great facial expressions.
He is great at teaching this course. If you need help, ask him. He is very approachable. The homework assignments can be a pain in the butt, but they will help you learn the material.
He is an okay prof. The whole class is based upon examples. Always do homework it will help you on exams, if you have him I would stay put you will end up doing well if you are willing to work
Well whoever said he's hot is a lunatic. Um, okay guy, just I didn't like how sometimes I would ask a question & he'd be like "you should know that" and I wanted to say "But I don't which is why I'm asking you!!" Sometimes made me fee
Ok teacher, answers questions with questions which was really annoying at times.Willing to help when you ask for it, but is very nit-picky about lab reports and write out portion of test.Study and do not miss class or lab and you will get a decent grade. Would take him as a professor again.
One word: WELL... Seriously the class is very difficult. Not necessarily his fault but definately a difficult grader.
He's awesome. This guy is so passionate about chemistry. You should take his class :)
Lectures have no outline and are scattered. Mostly he draws rough sketches and writes numbers, which produces notes that are not very useful. He seems to put as little effort into teaching as possible and is terrible at explaining things if you need help. Anwers question with unhelpful questions and talks to you like you're a five year old.
He was not very helpful, if you asked a question he never gave you a straight answer and just confused you more. Not to mention he is probably the pickiest grader EVER.
Blair was the bomb diggity. That man's got mad chem skillz. I did learned ton's of neat stuff about molecules.
BAD prof!! He's an extremely hard grader! He writes notes very fast on the board and does not explain well. He treats you basically like you're stupid when you ask questions, making it very uncomfortable to do so. I would NOT recommend him, even if you are fairly good at Chemistry. I had him for lab also and he was not good in lab either.
Smart man and very passionate about the material. But he can't teach. Most of the lecture was examples with little explanation. When asked a question, he responds with another question and tries to make you answer it yourself, even if it is obvious you are completely lost. I got a tutor for this class and still struggled. Definitely get the book.
Great Professor. Class requires a lot of work but he is good about curving tests.
Unimpressive "teaching". The exam questions were not formed at all like the problems practiced in class. Very disappointing.
He was an awful teacher. All he did in lecture and discussion was constantly write out problem/equations for us, but he ran though them so fast just didn't get how he got the answer or hwo to do the steps. He refused to show us how and he was when we asked. He failed his students & the worst teacher I've ever had @ GV-don't get him!!
Stay away from this teacher. He was awful at lecturing and even trying to teach you anything. He would put examples for you to do, but then he would just start doing it and not even explain how he was doing it & what each step meant so you would know how to do any of those steps in a problem on an exam. and when you asked any questions he got reall
He is an extremely hard teacher. Unless you are already really good at chemistry I suggest you not take him. I had a tutor, went to MS3, and did the practice problems and I still got a horrible grade in the class.
Very difficult grader -very nit-picky. Does not explain things thoroughly when teaching but go to his office hours and he is very helpful. Also made keys to all practice problems which helped a GREAT deal in understanding the problems. I would recommend him.
He's a smart guy but not a good professor. He shows a lot of examples during class, but when it comes to helping understand the material he doesn't explain very well. He's not good at answering questions and I ended up more confused when I left his office. Tests are terribly hard and he gives homework every week. Definitely not an easy A.
He was the hardest professor I've ever had. I didn't even understand half the things he said and I got a straight A in CHM 115. DO NOT TAKE HIM. I regret taking him terribly it ruined my first year of college. This was my only class that I didn't get a straight A in my 1st year so you know I'm not one of those stupid people that posts mean comments
AVOID BLAIR MILLER! If you take him it will be the most regretted decision you will ever make. Too bad he can't be fired, b/c he's head of the Chem. Dept. Had to retake 116 because of him. Failed it with him, retook it and got a B+... horrible prof. Lectures are useless and he is very intimidating- wont help you/ makes you feel stupid. DO NOT TAKE!
Prof Miller likely works well with his colleges, but he doesn't really understand the student perspective. That is to say, he doesn't know what to explain. When you ask a question his answers are vague at best, and he gives 0 feedback on the tests. Honestly, he writes "ugh", that's all. A lot of the info comes out of the book, so just read that.
Great guy, hilarious in lab, horrible teacher. Not meant to teach. I dont mind him for lab, but in lecture, absolutely terrible. If picking between him and Qi, pick him. But expect to get a random assignment of grades.
Horrible teacher. Does not explain things well and does not answer questions and makes you feel stupid for asking them. Even more terrible in lab, answers questions with a vague sound or not at all. He just gives you a random number on all the lab assignments without any explanation other than "nice" or my personal favorite, "ugh".
I loved Prof. Miller. I can understand how some might not like his style, BUT he doesn't just give you the answer when you ask a question, he wants you to figure it out yourself. He genuinely cares if you understand and he can see you're making an effort. I always looked forward to class. He's great about being available to help students too.
Awful lab instructor. Don't take him. If you ask him a question, he'll try to avoid and then plays the guessing game with you. He doesn't give you the answer (of course) but he doesn't even make an effort to help you understand or find a way to answer your question. He makes you feel completely stupid and expects you to know everything.
Miller is all over the place with his lectures. The whole hour is spent doing examples, the majority of which he only does half of, then says "you guys can do the rest later". When you ask him a question he will reply with "you should know that". In lecture some lady asked him how to do molar solubility and he straight up said "no, you should know"
he made it difficult to understand the material and often got questions wrong in his lecture. his tests are extremely hard and often too long for the class to finish. he blames the class for the bad averages but we can't all be stupid. i got an A in 115 and struggling for a B in this class. I go see another prof for office hours
He was a horrible professor. All of his lectures were very hard to understand or follow. Exams were killer and over things that went uncovered in class. He does hand out practice exams, but they are of almost no help because none of the information given is on the exams. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO RETAKE THIS CLASS
All over the place.Terrible notes, doesn't answer questions will just tell you to look it up.Was helpful at his weekend review sessions, and is very knowledgeable. Don't think he has a concise grading routine, individual problems account for 20% of exam grades frequently. Get a tutor, finding out what he wants is asking on exams is half the challenge
im going to suggest you avoid this professor at all costs. He is very knowledgeable about chemistry but has no clue how to teach it and he's not helpful at all when you ask questions. Its not worth the stress, find another professor.
Had him for lab, not lecture. A little odd, strange expressions and phrases can be distracting. Biggest complaint is that he makes you feel stupid and doesn't give direct answers. Picky grader, lousy feedback, but doesn't take much off for late work. Not bad for people who are already good at chem.
Miller hasn't taught quant chemical analysis in 3 years. It shows. He isn't clear in how he arrived to a solution when he does in-class example problems. Half of the class doesn't know what is going on and it is mid-semester.. The book for this class is very little help too. If I had the choice, I would have a different professor!
Such a bad professor. Don't bother asking him to do a problem because it will just confuse you more. I suggest that you stay away from him and his hand motions.
Worst prof I've ever had at GV. He avoids answering questions and only makes you feel dumb if he does answer a question. Exams are NOTHING like the homework or the book work, not that the book is very helpful. There's really no way to avoid having him, it seems like no one else teaches this so get a tutor and work hard.
Had him for 221 Lab - horrible professor. Wasted first 45 mins of every 4 hour lab talking. Very dramatic, should have gone into theatre instead of chemistry. Distracting facial expressions and gestures. Not helpful at all and will not answer questions directly.
He gives vague explanations in class, often glossing over certain things. Expect what he glosses over to be on the test. He is also a harsh grader, which is a bad combination of traits. He was often a minute to three late to class and was easily derailed onto tangents. Dr. Miller is overall a nice person but a lousy teacher.
The lectures carried a tone that oscillated between light quirky humor, deep explanations which were usually guided by a questioning narrative, and discussions about applications of the chemistry. I personally enjoyed this format and thought it worked well; but about 1/10 of the class expressed distaste in his style. Good teacher. Good guy.
Great person, but terrible teacher. Homework is all online, so you have to buy the code. Homework does not match up to tests. Tests are very hard and half the stuff on the tests we really didn't go over. He expects us to know stuff for tests even when he doesn't teach it I would never ever take this professor again again.
Lectures are long and vague. Class discussions are overall useless. Enjoys to ramble. BE PREPAIRED TO TEACH YOURSELF.
Where do I start? Blair is totally full of himself. Does not know the first thing about teaching. He is in the wrong profession. Blames the class for his lack of teaching. Don't be surprised to see stuff not from lecture on the exam. He even puts two answers in his multiple choice and wants you to pick the best one.. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He's super chill during lecture but difficult to approach with questions. Directions for lab were never clear & when someone asked a question it was a "figure it out yourself". Lectures aren't clear, example problems are never completed. When asked how to do a problem, he never finishes example in full. Lots of material, not a lot of direction.
He was not a good lab prof, not helpful at all for a beginner chem lab. He was never really prepared for the lab and twice didn't even read the lab at all. He was kind of rude if you asked him a question. He doesn't show much interest in what he does and could care less whether you did a lab correctly or not.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! His lectures are completely useless, because his notes and homework have nothing to do with whats on his tests. He expects you to know everything even before he teaches it. His tests are short answer and fill in the blank and have subjects we never talked about. Avoid him at all costs.
Make sure that if you have him for lab that you pay attention. He will not answer any of the questions you have unless you know the topic somewhat. He also lectures for a long time before lab even starts, so that is a waste of time. He is a tough grader for the lab reports and assignments, so make sure to have everything that is required!
Professor does not write test questions based on anything that is relevant to lecture or book material.
This class was the hardest class I have ever taken (100 level course), and I was a senior taking this. He tests on material that was never discussed in lecture so taking his test are a complete surprise every single time. While he is a nice man, this class is taught at a way higher level than it should be. I regret taking this class.
Going to class is 100% necessary because tests are heavily lecture based and it's hard to catch up if you miss. You also should try to read the book along side the lectures because his tests often have questions that are only answered in the book; not lecture. Study the objective sheets, and ask questions. Be prepared to teach yourself.
He is a very smart man and passionate about the material. However he has no teaching ability. He is very unorganized, office has papers laying on the floor. There is no structure to his notes in class. Today in class we had an activity and when everyone was stuck instead of slowing down he made us turn it in unfinished, leaving us all lost.
Do the reviews and practice problems! It is important to do as many practice problems as you can in this class because the problems count for so many points on the exams. He is definitely passionate and has a great understanding of the topic. I didn't visit office hours to ask questions much, but when I did, it helped.
I have never complained about a prof before but he is awful at teaching. Nice guy but his tests are not based on anything he teaches. The exams were a complete surprise and I was going to fail his class so I had to withdrawal it was that bad. I do not recommend taking him at all and I suggest you run far away if you have him for any course.
Everyone I talked to who had him said he is not a good professor. Whenever someone asked a question he makes you feel dumb for not knowing the answer. His explanations are also very hard to understand for a 100 level course. Tests are even harder than lectures. Avoid.
CHM 116 is hard no matter what prof you take. Prof Miller really cares about if you understand the material. A lot of people bash on him but Im pretty sure those are the ones who dont seek help from outside of class or do his extra practice. Multiple times I would have questions but couldnt make it to his office hours. He was very accommodating.
in this class, it was expected to have read the material BEFORE lecture, which adds up throughout the semester. he automatically assumes you know the text and continues lecture with that thought. His tests are impossible to complete within a 50 min. time and he gets mad when the class average is sucky. he offers chances to make it up though
He isn't consistent in having HW on a set day and time like most professors. He grades daily paper assignments (out of 4 points) extremely hard. He's not great at communicating the content either or emphasizing what's important. He also started borderline yelling at every lab group in lab due to his poor instructions.
Professor Miller is a good lab prof. He knows what he's talking about and is very helpful when you have questions.
Prof. Miller will answer your questions, but hes not always helpful with his answers. He doesnt seem to know what is going on half the time regarding the labs. He can be a tough grader, but is fair at the same time and gives good feedback if you did something wrong.
Super tough grader who expects you to know material you never covered. His notes arent helpful unless you write down what hes saying and not what hes writing. He is a little unapproachable when it comes to asking questions, I dont know if he means to but he roles his eyes when you ask him something a lot. He can be really nice but not always
No good
Does not come to class prepared. So if you ask him a question dont expect an answer. I had him for lab and he grades pretty tough and gives very little feedback on labs. I wouldnt take a lab with him again unless I had too. I didnt enjoy how he taught the lab or tried to help. This class gave me a headache. Lab partners got me through the lab
Took him for lab, hes great. If you have any questions hes there to explain. He understands mental health. Go to office hours if you need help. Hes always presents a brief slideshow of what youre doing that day. If you have concerns about your grade talk to him.
He is a funny dude who reminds me of a dad. Big talker. Helpful with questions and gives good explanations of expectations.
Im taking his 116 lab and he talks to students like hes extremely inconvenienced when they ask questions. He complains that students waste time coming to lab unprepared (which is true) but for those of us who actually try, he makes it hard to really succeed in his lab. Its like he thinks anyone with a question is slacking.
Professor Miller has a lecture-heavy course. I found it difficult to do well on quizzes unless I read the chapter before it was assigned so I could follow along with the lecture. Many class lectures felt all over the place and hard to follow but a lot of the quizzes had information he talked about for only a brief minute.
Professor Miller is attempting to make the course easier, but instead of updating how the course is structured, assignments are dropped. It is still taught the old-fashioned way: a torrent of lectures, homework, and readings, none of which match the material on the test.
I do not recommend Professor Miller for a lab. He did not give good feedback or clear instructions, and didn't read through the lab beforehand. Whenever I asked a simple question, he never gave me a helpful answer. Lastly, he took many points off of our report forms for little to no reason.
Good lab professor. Very helpful if you ask him questions during lab, but he manplains them. Easy A. The way he talks is very silly, very nice old man.
LAB: I don't understand why he's rated so low. Reading his reviews, none of these are what my section experienced. He makes it clear what he wants: show your work, and make things legible. He's very understanding and lightens the mood up with every lab. He also explains each lab step by step before we start, people take this for granted. Great Prof
I had him for lab and thought he was great. He explained everything step by step before doing anything and would eventually answer questions. Gives equations and how to set everything up. He gets things happen, whether in lab or life. I thought he was funny because he had humor like my dad. He was a little intimidating but overall great dude.
Prof Miller was one of the rudest people I've ever met. Any student would ask a question during lab, and he would raise his voice, repeat the question, and have everyone look at you, so there was no point in asking for help. Regarding grading, he takes off points if It doesn't make sense to him. Easy A but don't recommend him
I took him for my CHM 116 lab, he was a good professor and kind of funny but mostly pretty standard professor didn't love him didn't hate him more indifferent.
