He is a terrible teacher who doesnt know his material, and his notes suck
bad teacher, and tells stupid jokes
Lecture notes no relevance to problem solving, not as funny as he thinks he is.
Amazing teacher, course notes useful if read during lecture. Easy on the eyes.
Doesn't seem to have much of a lecture plan. Problems in class are very easy; problems on assignments are very difficult.
This man is cruel. He will show you no mercy. He will crush you in the palm of his hand and laugh foolishly with a rediculous grin on his face like it was no big deal. That and he is annoying, everyday you will find him more annoying then the day before.
absolute king of examples. get the feeling he doesn't know as much as he should to be teaching the course. course started off slow and then went way too fast after the second half.
One of the WORST profs in engineering He just show how to do the easy questions from the book and ... (that can go on forever) ... Summary: Don't be in his class go to Dr. Zahra Moussavi if you can.
an overall dumbass
rite, this guy is horrible. first, he can't teach. then, cuz i'm sitting at a 55%, he tells me i should probably drop. now i find out that that would have gotten me a B,grrr! can't believe i wasted my time and money for that!
Aaaaachh, horrible horrible. If I ever have him again, I am quitting engineering and going to pick flowers in arts. Disorganized, and doesn't take his evaluations seriously.
Count the number of times he says "whatever", like some 8 year old girl. When you ask a question, he looks at your with one of those "why would you have a question about this?" looks.
One of the worst prof in Eng. Always trying to mess you up when u ask a question. Better looking at the book than going to the lectures.
Very difficult prof. He makes it very easy to skip or not pay attention in class. He gives overly simple examples, yet somehow makes them complex. He teaches the very basic principles and expects you to apply them to very difficult problems. The textbook is your friend when taking this course.
If you can avoid him do it!
he says 'oh ok' a lot
No Comments
horrible, u can never understand anything from him, and when you ask he just laughs instead of answering, i'll try not to take a course with him again, watch out he might be teaching microprocessors next year which i think is a really bad choise from the faculty.
He knows his stuff, but his lectures are disorganized and unclear. Sometimes makes addition/subtraction errors in his examples. His examples are also hard to follow (step-by-step wise) For those of you who have no background in electric circuits, or like to do things step-by-step, you WILL want to try someone else for this course. Like Sharif.
Very confusing explinations, laughs at students when a question is asked. Not very helpful when questioned. Bad prof, caused a career changing decision.
absolutely NC(no comments)
You can not trust this guy. This guy doesn't want be a teacher but it's the only job he's got. I HATE how he gives the answers to problems in the text book: late, too few to actually learn from, and with too many errors.
not good
i don't wanna see him again
Nothing to say about him. only one word: crapy!
bad prof in the world
ok compared to other profs i have had. Yeah he can make you look bad when you ask a question but he still answers though...get the feeling he trys to eliminate weak students with his tests...just have a sensible question and you will be just fine...he is cute too
What is wrong with this faculty? have the administration no respect for thier students? or even for the faculty's reputation? its quite obvious an absolute majority of his peer evals suck, and yet hes still teaching. Shame on you admin. Shame. Yoshi...nothing against you, i know its hard to understand, but you just CANNOT and should NOT teach!
THIS GUY IS THE WORST PROF EVER, SUCH AN IDIOT!!!!!! the class would be easy if it wasn't for him being a horrible teacher.
The guy is decent. he explains things really well. problems ask on test are very VERY similar to assign problems. so i dont see why people hate him so much. you to tha homework...
Horrible prof. Just stay away from him if you can. If you ask him a question that guy will actually laugh at you before he answers it. Worst prof I've had to date.
Duuuuh!!! Too bad you can't rate amebas... they would get higher ratings than Yoshida. Words of wisdom from the experienced... "Stay away from his class if you can!!!" I REALLY MEAN IT!!!
His lectures were useful for learning the material, but his tests and final exam expected (implicity) that students memorize all of the formulas and circuit diagrams in the course. The exams were not that difficult by themselves, but having memorize everything made it a lot harder than it should have been.
I don't know what everybody's talking about on here. When he supposedly "laughs" at students, it's just that he's a lighthearted guy and that's his way of speaking! I had NO interest in ECE and had to take this as a department requirement and I ended up actually enjoying the majority of the course. Great prof; He wants to help students!
not good at all
He's an awful prof. Cannot stand listening to him during class. "Essentially, you know... he's bad." If you've taken his class you'll get that joke. He repeats a phrase over and over and over again. He's very useless. Don't take him if you don't have to.
I don't know what everyone is talking about here, he is "essentially" a good professor! People who don't like him are obviously suffering from mild retardation. Highly recommended!
I really dont know why people hate Yoshida. I just finished EE and I assure you that he is one of the better profs. He laughs at questions, but its not a sign of insult or disrespect. He admits mistakes unlike some other profs but his teachings and lecture notes are clear and concise that I dont even use the text books anymore.
Everyone seems to hate him but i dont see why. He can speak great english (which is rare in EE). His tests are usually fair. He is entertainign in class
He teaches a lot of courses so he is really busy. His notes are clear and concise and he teaches fairly well. Hes taught the course well
he doesn't give u marks no matter what! talks to himself. can't understand a word
Concept explanation is not clear
Lectures fast. Print out the notes.. He is very willing to help, you just gotta persist until he eventually figures out what you're asking and gives you the answer you need rather than a tangential one. Because it's a design heavy class, he gives "ballparky" answers rather than concrete ones. But quizzes are based on technicalities. Nice guy.
He doesn't thoroughly understand the course material and thus constantly makes mistakes. He doesn't know what anyone is talking about whenever someone asks him a question in class. One of the worst instructors in engineering. If you have the option to avoid his teaching, avoid him. He is a nice guy though. Smiles incessantly. Can get annoying.
Really nice instructor. He didn't go on strike when the faculty voted to, in the interests of being professional. Thinks about what's best (not necessarily easiest) for other people, including students.
Probably the nicest professor I've had so far. He truly cares about making his students into actual good engineers. He teaches by using a lot of examples which most engineers really enjoy. His notes are clear to learn from on your own time as well which was really nice. He could improve by being more concise on what he's doing. Overall pretty good!
Lectures contribute nothing to understanding the course. Very difficult to follow. Better off skipping every class and learning from the textbook rather than being more confused by going to the lectures.
Lectures are not helpful. I learned most of the material from the text. Mid-Term Exam was poorly worded. Made reasonable quizzes. Did not post lecture notes.
What was that??? A+ all semester long and then the final exam. I dont even think i passed the course now. What is wrong with this guy and the other guy gabe thomas?
Awful. Lectures are very different from exam material.
Not sure what everyone is complaining about. This guy was awesome! By far the funniest prof I've had and was very good at explaining examples. "Should we o clockwise or counterclockwise?"
Dr. Yoshida is a great prof. He gives very clear explanations and is always willing to explain things again. I enjoyed going to his lectures. The exam content is very similar to the textbook work. He's also a really nice person which is a bonus.
Dr. Yoshida is a very caring Professor, took his time explaining course material and would often redo examples to accommodate for different methods of getting the solution. Weekly quizzes were helpful to understanding and he made sure to go over the answers with the class after each quiz. I recommend doing the suggested homework problems.
He's very average, messes up calculations quite a bit and often explains how to solve problems without going into much theory about why. Not a great prof but it's easy enough to do well in the course
He's got a rare talent of making everything appear much more difficult than it really is. Youtube is your best friend for this class, as lectures were beyond useless. Should be banned from using power point as he jumps back and forth between slides seemingly at random. Quizzes were awful and made up 10% of the grade. Take it with different prof.
This guy sets you for failure from the beginning. Class average is 40% on quizzes and his lectures are pure a waste of time. The good reviews of him were definitely written by him because he thinks the students who complain are wrong. He's an instructor btw, not a professor; big difference apparently.
It's embarrassing that the U of M can't find a decent Controls prof. You're stuck with Yoshida for both Controls 1 and 2. His notes were overly complicated and close to useless.
He is a nice guy, but a good teacher not as much. He's old school in many ways. He has trouble answering any question you have until he is absolutely 100% sure about it. There seems to be a disconnect between him and his students. In my experience with him though he is fair with exams, so as long as you can learn the material you can pass.
PSA: do not use the recommended textbook. Instead, get 'Control Systems Engineering' by Nise. It will get you through the course, b/c Yoshida definitely won't. He's not a bad person, but he's terrible at teaching, and you won't learn much from the lectures. Everything I know about the course I learned from reading Nise.
He is an absolutely horrible prof. NEVER take his class. He is physically incapable of teaching in a way anyone understands, he has no grasp of technology, he does not care if students succeed, he never answers email, and his lectures are useless. If you're gonna learn anything, it's gonna be from the textbook. Absolutely garbage class
Nice guy but can't teach well online. Very difficult tests. Responsive to all doubts. Give worthless notes. Won't take it again.
He has a terrible teaching style. Historically, this has been an easy course but he made it very difficult this year. Online classes are not his thing. Class started with 100+ students but only 50-60 left by the end. I basically had to teach myself the whole course. his notes do not help and classes are super sleepy. Nice guy tho!
I skipped class and strictly read the textbook to get through this one. He will give you quizzes on the weekend but only replies to emails Mon-Fri. Quizzes had no consistent time length and had a 35% average. My midterm mark changed 3 times I still don't know why. I didn't finish the final and I got a B+ so it will be curved. Awful.
so, he's scarcely proficient with tech of any kind, his existence as a human is a rather disputable topic, but if you listen in class you should be fine. He does care about the students, if you didn't submit a lab before grades were calculated, he'll email you and give you many chances.
Blair sucks. Seems like a nice guy but tests you as if youve been a practicing engineering in the field of study for 10+ years. I didnt sleep before this final exam and what a shock it was absurd and nobody I knew was even able to answer half the exam. No way I got above 30% on the final and still got a B. This guy sucks and has no clue.
Yoshida does not meet post secondary education standards. His quizzes / exams are not well thought through and he expects you to read his mind. He makes up his own ways of doing things so the textbook doesn't even help you prepare for wrtitten tests. Genuinely, the worst prof i had in the span of 8 years getting two undergraduate degrees! AVOID!!!!
Amazing lecturer, and cares a ton about students. Just don't leave seeing him until the last moment possible. If you like to keep on top of your studies, this is your dream prof. Great lectures and notes, useful examples and explainations, and fantastic feedback and out of class support. Can't wait to take his classes again.
Great prof!! He makes things very digestible and provides lots of worked examples to reference. Answers all questions during lectures and takes the time to make sure you understand. Course isn't too hard, just make sure to start labs early. He does 3 question quizzes every other weekend that are generally easy if you attend lectures.
This guy is the worst. My buddy was able to explain 200% of this course material in 15 minutes using a notepad. If you want to learn control systems I beg you to learn from anyone other than Blair.
Maybe the worst teacher in the entire University of Manitoba. Simply put, he can't teach. Not only can he not teach, but he also doesn't put any effort into the course. Unfortunately there's not another controls teacher so if you don't have to, don't take controls and take ECE 4260 instead. I really don't know how this guy has a job.
Yoshida's notes and UMlearn posting structure is extremely confusing and time consuming to navigate. He assigns practice questions from the textbook, however seems to make up his own style of test problems. The low class averages reflect the class's general confusion. I don't feel like I'm being given a fair shot to learn control systems.
Worst prof in ECE. I would give him a zero if I could
honestly a useless teacher, exams were way harder than course material for no reason what so ever. Marked even more difficult on top of that, would give a 0 if I could
This prof seems really weak with technology and having him for an online class made it much harder. When asked questions regarding the exams we never got clear answers. Exams are much harder than anything taught in class and textbook problems. Grading is also done harshly.
I don't think I've ever taken a harder class that should've been incredibly easy. It should have been simple material, but Blair was so incomprehensible that I came away from every lecture knowing less than what I came in with. The textbook isn't particularly helpful either. Just an overall awful experience.
Blair did a lot of examples in class and thoroughly explained concepts. He answered any questions I had and always was willing to help. The quizzes & exams were relatively easy and were heavily based on the recommended problems. Overall great prof, I highly recommend taking the course with him.
Took professor yoshida in summer for ece 2262 , overall pretty good , gives a lot of examples and gives you in the lectures exactly what you need in the exams, he is pretty straight forward with his exams what you did in class will come in exams.
Does a very poor job at explaining concepts and engaging conversation and questions. The lectures are just a word spaghetti of bad explanations. Ask a simple clarification question and he will avoid answering it directly by presenting a completely different problem to explain your question about the other example. Make sense? It's not supposed to.
The content was wayyyyy harder than it needed to be. Everything should have been very straightforward but he made it so much harder. The quizzes never made sense, was always a surprise and decently hard (i.e. 3 questions in 6 mins). Very inaccesible outside of class too, takes days to a week to reply. Avoid him.
Horrible. The labs were vague as there were no clear instructions provided, he wouldn't post the solution for his textbook, and you know ... just made things way more complicated than they should be. He even made linear interpolation look difficult. The term test and final were marked somewhat okay. Attendance were kinda mandatory.
He is a good teacher. His life story is very inspirational. I respect him more and more after hearing about his life. At very beginning, the class was hard, quizzes were terrible. After a few weeks, I started to get into the correct study way with his lecture notes. It ended well. Make sure to read carefully his lectures!
