Great professor, very fun, very knowledgeable. Would love to take him again. Makes class enjoyable!

He was a great teacher. I loved learnin about history becuz he made it fun. Ive recommended him to many others...Keep up the great job
Awesome!!! Made me interested in a discipline in which I had no taste for... Now is my second major. Great professor... Would recommend.
What a great class! A very talented teacher who knows what he is talking about. I plan to tak ehim again!
Great teacher! I would take him again.
Awesome teacher. He gives really good examples and is very down to earth. He definately knows what he is talking about and if I had to take another history I would definately take him again. I recommend anyone take his class if you have to take history.
he is a great professor with an upbeat and exciting personality. He makes going to class something to look foward to!
Multiple choice tests, but phrases the questions tricky.
Has a mouth like a sailor! His teaching is okay, but he tries to trick you on his tests. Take him during the summer term and you will be fine. His comments can be taken as offensive, so try not to take them personally.
I enjoyed learning from Dr. Dunnavent; he was really lively. You can tell he loves his job. There's no way anyone can fall asleep in his classes. It's been two years since I've taken Hist. 145, and I still remember much of what he taught.
Very zealous about history and also quite easy to relate to. Test can be tricky but just hearing his lectures is enough for me to want to take him again. Great job Dr. D!
I have taken over 3 classes with him. He is an awesome teacher and a great man.
Dr. D was helpful during office hours and with the book reviews. He does lecture a little on the quick side, so keep up and you will do fine.
One of the best professors I have had while attending this University. All of the staff here could learn from his approach to his students.
very great lectures. his test are very tricky though the way he phrases them. i studied for 2 weeks and could spout off anything you asked and i got a C on the test. he is interesting though and makes history acutally interesting. easyto relate too. not stuck up.
He's completely fun and different. He could teach a course on toothpicks, and manage to make it interesting. While his teaching style is really relaxed, BEWARE, he'll kill you on the tests if you don't do some major prepping. Still, the extra credit that he offers is always fun, and he's incredibly helpful. Best ever!!!
I took Dr. D for almost every history class I had b/c he's just that good. He's very intelligent and excited about history. He is the most helpful professor outside the classroom I have ever had. He's a great speaker and he's hot!
He is a very good teacher that makes everything easy to understand. He has tough requirements but makes sure that you can get them done. An overall great professor.
Great professor. One of the very best at LSUS. VERY helpful to students outside of class. Lectures can be a little quick, but easy to understand. Great man.
this dude is one of the greatest teachers that i have had or ever will. it doesnt sugar coat anything, tells you straightforward, knows his stuff, JUST GREAT TEACHER AND PERSON. remembers his stuends outside the class room!!!! A++++
Great professor...keeps it fun and interesting. Tests were a little tricky but kept an A in his class.
A really all around great professor. I hated history until I had this class, and now history is my minor. His tests aren't super easy, this class is still great.
Great teacher. Very tricky tests, but youa ctually learn. I learned more in this class then every other hist class, although I did make a c. He phrases questions in very tricky ways on the test. Just show up for class and it could benefit you in a lot of ways other then just notes. Recommended, very interesting.
I really loved these classes! You can tell he loves teaching. I would take more of his classes if I needed the credits. The lectures are very captivating, but make sure you take notes and study them. Test questions are specific, so you really have to know the material. I retained more information from this class than any other class i've ever had.
A LOT of work is involved. Class does not meet often or during the full class time so you will have time to work. Ask questions for clarity because it's easy to get confused. His office is always open. He does not bite and is a cool professor to take.
A great class; I enjoyed it a lot.
Liked the class. I will be taking another one of his courses as an elective. Great guy and a fun class.
Great class! I enjoyed it a lot, and Dr. Dunnavent is an excellent professor.
History was my favorite subject in highshool, made all A's. Dr. Dunnavent lectured too fast and I found it difficult to take notes. He did not use the text. The tests were tricky, I will not take this teacher again.
great teacher, very helpful if you stop him in class or in the hall, Beware you have to be a fast note taker or just tell him to slow down, he tells you what is on the test
He is a very funny guy! If you come to class and take notes his tests are not that hard. Do not buy the book it is useless. He does not take roll so thats kinda cool! He also does not use blackboard so you have to catch him in his office if you have questions! He knows his material so take him for history 146!!!
He is fast at telling the material so beware but he makes history fun.
he will make history fun
Nice guy, very funny; You can't fall asleep in his class. He's very entertaining when it comes to history, but his tests are hard as heck. A lot of the questions are unclear.
He talks way too fast.
He talks fast, so listen carefully and take good notes. If you study what he tells you to study, you will do fine.
Talks fast but interesting. Makes history fun. Test are hard, but explains what you need to know. If you write a paper do not use the word "I", you will receive a 0 on the paper. If you need to talk to him before the next day, try the bars (mainly Noble Savage).
Best prof ever! Not only is he obviously passionate about his subject, but he seems to genuinely enjoy teaching it as well. He's always very willing to spend extra time helping you if you ask, and b/c he grades fairly harshly, I do recommend stopping by his office a few times. Most consider him not only a teacher, but a mentor and friend as well.
He does talk fast but he is so interesting. He is very intelligent and is a great prof. Tests are tricky but not difficult as long as you read the question and all answers completely.
Disappointing. I expected more from him. It was not meaty enough for a senior level course. It was taught on an elementary level with graduate level expectations.
No homework. He talks fast but you can tell he genuinely cares about what he's teaching. He actually has me wanting to take another history. He is straight up with you from the start. My favorite teacher by far!
Very interesting class, very interesting teacher. He takes you outside and sets you up on "the battlefield" which helps. He narrows down what lectures are going to be on what parts of the test for you, so it is easy to study. Very nice, interesting teacher. He just never was in his office to answer questions when he said he's be! Will take again!
very, very knowledgeable and he is easy to understand. you can tell that he enjoys what he is doing.
Probably the most helpful teacher at LSUS. He knows his stuff and he is very interesting. He will stop during lectures to repeat stuff or answer questions. He is very helpful if you ask for help enough. He is just super nice and interesting. Take him while you can!!!
Dr. D is one of the best. You will learn a ton from him, he is fun to listen to, and he is the most helpful teacher at LSUS. I have taken him for 3 upper level history courses and wish I could again. If you want to learn and have fun doing it, take him. Tests are ID and essay, but he tells you which lectures are ID and which are essay. Take him!!!
He is really nice. He talks really fast, but if you say WHOAH slow down he will always go back.
Great teacher, I had him almost every semester when I was in school. He is always willing to help you if you ask for it. He makes classes fun. Does not hurt that he's easy on the eyes either.
Dunnavent's lectures are hard to follow and He does not follow his syllabus when he says he will preview assignments 1 week in advance of due date to HELP the student. The keyword here is HELP! He's never around when you need him. I do find his lectures interesting but his grading techniques are unreasonable.
Yes, it is hard to follow if you miss classes all the time. But why complain when he tells you what your test is on? and no he doesnt go over the 2 book reviews during the semester because he spends 2 days going over it in the beginning, and he always pushes the dates back when something is due. So if you dont like him, maybe you should rethink col
Not easy, tests don't follow lecture and if you miss a class your screwed for notes. Not available for extra help.
Great teacher. Very nice, easy to follow, and really knows his stuff.
Dr. Dunnavent is an excellent professor. Although note taking requires tremendous speed and alertness, his lectures are very interesting. He is very easy to work with. If you get lost, he will be MORE than happy to go back an explain or say it again. Pay very close attention to the book review instructions at the beginning of the semester.
Dr. Dunnavent is not a lecturer, he is a storyteller. He literally brings history alive and has made it fun. I am taking his summer course and before I took this class, dreaded it because I HATED history in high school, but have since added an extra course in my fall schedule just so I can take his history 146 class. I recommend him!!!!
One of the greatest teachers I've ever had in all my years of university, working my way through three majors. His charisma almost forces you to be interested in what he is talking about. Without a doubt I am going to make sure to take more of his classes.
Awesome teacher! Explains things in detail so you can get a mental picture. Also, very hott! :o)
Great professor with an obvious interest in subject matter. Expects much from his senior students, and is always available to help during his office hours; not to mention, easy on the eyes!
You'll want to use your laptop to take notes because the lectures are fast and detailed, but Dr. Dunnavent always stops and repeats if needed. Really fun lectures, but exams are difficult if you didn't prepare. Pay attention to book review template also!
Dr. Dunnavent seems to know his history. He talks fast, but tries to give you time to write what he says.
VERY INTERESTING! HE'S HILARIOUS SO IT MAKES HIS CLASS FUN. SOMETIMES WE GOT TO GO SIT OUTSIDE IF THE WEATHER WAS NICE. AND HE'S HOT. LADIES YOU'LL ENJOY!!!!
You can write 2 pages worth of notes and not be bored. Dunnavent is a very interesting professor and keeps your attention, TAKE GOOD NOTES AND SHOW UP TO CLASS and although he is laid back and easy, here's one tip to help you pass the class...STUDY!!!!!!! I'd take him again.
His class is really hard. You have to be there every day and take note to pass the test. I did not even open the book the whole time I was in class. He talks really fast so be prepared.
Interesting class, entertaining lectures...difficult tests.
This was a great elective class. I really enjoyed the lectures. This was a 3 hour night class, but he always let class out after an hour 1/2. I learned a lot about the period of history he was teaching. Talks extremely fast. The tests are hard...they are all essay and you pretty much have to memorize every bit of your notes (which are alot).
Great class, although he would keep us the entire class time (3 HOURS!) he manages to keep the classes attention. even through the mexican war. will definitely take him again next semester.
Dr. Dunnavent is a really cool guy. His teaching is very organized and straight-forward. He slows down for notetaking, emphasizes key points, & he isnt big on dates either. The first test is a bit of a shock bc it usually ask miniscule things, but after that test u should expect that on his test. The final was actually an old test we already took.
It was a very interesting class and hot teacher..but study study study!!
Dr. Dunnavent makes the class a lot of fun but its hard to determine what you'll need to know for tests, which are short so each question counts, and he tends to forget to bring test scores back to you for 2-3 weeks. He's an awesome person and good at teaching (makes it a lot of fun!) but bad at being a teacher.
Doc is pretty smart. He took him for both Hist 146 and Hist 299. For his lecture classes COME TO CLASS. He tells you what you need to know, but you gotta show up to get the information. Study for the test. History isn't hard to understand. It is already been made and there is nothing to prove. Take good nots. But he knows his stuff! Just listen!!
best history teacher ever!!! he puts a modern twist on history which makes it so much easier to understand. you have to go to class everyday to take notes but his lectures are great! you have to study fot the tests bc they arent easy but his great personality makes up for all of the studying.
great prof! will help you on his class or problems outside of classroom! loves to laugh with his students, even at the expense of himself! always uses analogies to connect the past to present..study hard though...overall one of the best profs at lsus!! take him if you can! it will be worth it!
Very good teacher! Just watch the test... You have to take good notes and study!!! Watch his test questions. He will try to catch you with wording so reread every question on his test :)
Love him! Amazing prof! Wish I needed more history classes for my major!! Take good notes and pay attention to wording on the test!
Awesome teacher! makes it fun and interesting and clarified everything. Didnt need the textbook at all.
Such an enthusiastic teacher! I had become accustomed to fighting consciousness during history courses, but had a welcome change in this course. He is legitimately interested and involved with his subject matter, which makes the students more engaged as well. You definitely do have to study for the tests, and the wording can be a little tricky.
Very intelligent and gets point across. Takes forever to grade tests though!
For an interesting Hist class take Doctor D. At first I was pretty creeped out especially when we all had to go stand outside BUT he makes sense and will let you wear a hat! Great class.
AWESOME teacher! He makes class very interesting! Show up, take notes, study, and you'll have an A. I have no complaints on him, I'm taking Dr. Dunnavent again for 146.
Great teacher, really knows his history!
Dr. Dunnavent is a awesome professor! The class isn't easy; the tests are all essay questions plus there are two book reviews. But I feel that I learned a lot about African American history in his class! You definitely have to work for a good grade in his class, so don't expect handouts. Would recommend him to any history major!
He's very intelligent and knows his stuff. You wont really need the book, he tests off of his lectures. Pay attention, he's flighty and sometimes hard to follow. He doesn't really like people being late for class. Good teacher and makes class fun!
Study material, tests are difficult. Tests are from lecture and he's hard to follow, take good notes. He makes the course fun I will say that. Good teacher that knows his history.
I took this class thinking it would be an A but unfortunately its not as simple as people make it to be. He has a great lecture but is hard to follow. You have to go into the class already knowing quite a bit about history. I was a straight A student in highschool and currently have a 3.8 and I have a C in his class and am probably going to drop.
I hate history, but I loved his class. He talks really fast, especially when he gets into a section he likes so I would definitely recommend recording his class so you don't miss anything important. He's a really cool guy and I think everyone should take his class at least once. :)
Show up to class everyday and show up on time... Sometimes he will give bonus points to those in attendance! If you actually go to class, you will not fail the class. The book is not mandatory, even though he tells you it is. I would recommend recording his lecture if you are aggravated by him speaking too quickly for you to catch the notes.
I took this class during the summer and must say AWESOME. I learned more than in any other history class ever! He is awesome, does talk fast but very interesting and helpful! Tests all multiple choice and gives bonus assignments. He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable! Best TEACHER EVER!!!!
Awesome guy!! Knows his stuff
Fantastic prof! Better than all the other professors at Lsus! talks fast but I learned more than any other professor and he was always there to help me after class. I always made straight As and he stayed extra office hours to help me keep my grade point average, but he won't just give it to u! U must come to class and listen to his lecture.
Great!
The man knows history, and the man knows how to teach history. Greatest history teacher I've ever had. It was nice to feel like I was really learning. He'll keep you laughing too.
He is a really good history teacher and he makes the class interesting. He talks really fast so its good to make friends so you can share notes incase you missed something. Class was good though.
Has a bit of a punk-rock professor vibe, and that's OK. Loves military history, so expect lots of questions about important battles, generals, etc. Seems to care about what he's teaching, and it shows.
I do not enjoy history, but this was a requirement for my major. He is a nice professor and gives bonus points. I was in a class of 65 and every test he would tell us that 90% of the class failed and would give us bonus points. He talks to fast and you need to know alot about history before you take his class. I will NEVER take him again.
Over the top helpful! Best LSUS Prof! And he is hot!
I saw on here his high ratings and transferred into this class from another hist class. I thought it would be easy. You MUST go to class every single day, or you will miss a lot. I would HIGHLY recommend that you record the lectures as well-- he talks insanely fast. Cool teacher, gave bonus points but still wasn't enough to save my grade.
Professor Dunnavent is great! His lectures are awesome and he is a really funny guy. If you're ever having trouble just ask for help. But don't think you can just get an A. This class is hard and you really have to work at it. If you are engaged with his lectures you will learn so much! I will for sure be taking more of his classes.
Dr. D. is pretty great. His tests are killer and require you to essentially memorize everything he lectured on, so BE IN CLASS. He also doesn't play around when it comes to book reviews, so triple check you have the exact format he wants. He is however, brilliant & funny & absolutely willing to help you if you need it. Would definitely take again.
Loved his class. He really engaged the students and presented the material in a way that was easy to process and retain.
Easy going and approachable... Lectures always have humor in it, but still difficult to follow unless you're really interested in the subject. Grades consist of 4 tests, no homework or class participation points, but attendance is vital because his lectures are where tests questions derive from.
ONE OF THE BEST LECTURES I HAVE SET THROUGH. LETS YOU RECORD HIS LECTURES BECAUSE YOU WILL NEED ALL YOUR NOTES FOR THE TEST! GREAT PROFESSOR!!
He is pretty laid back. If you do not care enough to show up to class, he has no problem failing you. Do not take advantage of his kindness. He understands that you have a life outside of class but you are in college, so show up!
This was a super easy online class. The class literally just consists of 16 quizzes (15 because he drops the kowest score). It is pretty straightforward. The only hard thing about this class was remembering the due dates for the quizzes.
Took 3 Senior level classes with him. Only 5 assignments (3 tests and 2 book reviews) so there's not a lot of cushion gradewise, but he tells you exactly what he expects. Made the lectures fun and was open to questions and discussion, but he moves fast. Tests are completely essay and come from lectures so TAKE NOTES, STUDY, AND DO NOT MISS CLASS!
Take him online and it'll be the easiest class you'll ever take. 2-3 quizzes a week and all answers are on quizlet.
Best. professor. ever. Is not a basic boring history professor. Very easy to understand what is expected of you and on your test. Only grades are your tests but if you show you care he will help out a little. Cares about your grades and understands that you are a college student, life is hard. If I could take him for every single one of my classes
The. Worst. Enough said.
I wholly disagree with the previous responder! The professor engaged directly with any question put forth and furthermore demonstrated total concern for student understanding of the lectures given.
First, do not believe the quizlet post. Anyone who takes his course knows from day one how the class will be and you are able to prepare for the quizzes as you can see them all immediately. He responded to a question I wanted to know late at night so he is swift to answer questions. To complain about this clearly laid out course is absurdity.
The online class material is a classic text book with key terms, maps, and timelines. Quizzes were multiple choice and timed to be 15 minutes for 10 questions. The thing I hated most was how unspecific expectations were. He mentioned that he didn't provide reviews, nor PowerPoints, nor zooms. Anything in the entire chapter was up for grabs ;(.
DONT TAKE ONLINE! No lectures, extra materials, or input from teacher! Textbook quizzes 2-3/week & asks questions not in textbook. Subjective questions hard to answer unless you're a mind-reader or maybe if there was more time allowed to actually think. Other students say great class lectures. Wish we had some!
Definitely a character. He is very funny and knows a ton about what he is teaching. However, he puts stories in his lectures and sometimes it's hard to determine if its actually the lecture or a story. Does not use powerpoint. I recommend typing your notes because it is very hard to keep up and write since he talks pretty fast.
Professor Dunnavent is one of my least favorite professors at LSU-S. He tends to go off subject while lecturing which I do not personally enjoy. He gives 4 tests all semester and that is what you are graded on. His tests are extremely difficult in my opinion unless you are already knowledgeable on history. Would not recommend.
This class has a complete hands-off approach which makes it hard to get to know the material. The questions on the quiz are all over the place, 10 questions in 15 minutes. Sounds easy right? Wrong. I never had test anxiety prior to this class and now I dread test days which are every 2-3 days. I love History but not this class.
This class is the only online course I have taken that is clearly laid out and has realistic expectations of students. Not sure what the previous reviewer was claiming about. Yes there is a lot of reading, its called college, yes the questions on quizzes are from all over the chapters, its called college. It is challenging, its called college!
Prof Dunnavent is okay but his class is terrible. If you are an organized student who doesn't like when things are all over the place, this class
Prof D is okay but his class is terrible. If you are a student who likes some sort of structure, then his class is not for you. Tests are hard for no reason and lectures are unorganized. Just writes random things on the board and then goes on rants about God knows what. His way of teaching would make US History anyone's least favorite subject.
Contrary to the previous rating, which complained about lack of structure... In an F2F environment, he puts an outline on the board so students know Exactly the material covered. Yes, he writes sub points all over the board to assist in clarifying points. He answers questions in detail and Gives bonus points. Wish all my profs were as good!
I'd like to believe the raving reviews about this prof's personality, but this is a stacked online course I had very little interaction with him. The dates of his quizzes are confusing, and he randomly skipped 3 chapters towards the end of the semester. I find this unreasonable, as most students don't have the syllabus in hand to check every quiz.
The most straightforward course I have taken online. The syllabus is available and remains available from day one. Unlike others, Dunnavent has every module open with all the quiz dates open on day one. Unlike other courses I have taken, this one is clearly laid out and a snap to navigate and he responds to questions with lightening speed.
Lots of reading I mean lots but quizzes are fairly simple. Just need to put the work in, I would recommend
He all good
I took the accelerated HIST 145 1C (it wasn't an option when selecting). The only grades were quizzes. He creates questions that no one would ever think to take note of, and the quizzes are 10 or fewer questions with only 20 minutes. Worst of all is that he is not very open to disputing grades. Avoid taking this class.
As an older returning student I was worried, but was surprised, pleasantly, to find this class was the clearest to navigate online course I have taken. He gives bonus written assignments and drops the lowest exam, and his moodle videos were filled with bonus assignments, encouragement, suggestions on how to study, felt like I was in an F2F class.
Alright class, average is prob a B
This teacher is very awesome. His lectures are awesome but he goes off point some times. Great Class to be in if you are taking a History class.
Easy to navigate compared to other online classes. Uses Kaltura to benefit students. Drops lowest test grade. Answers emails swiftly or you can meet him in office hours. Bonus points are quite helpful. It is college so expect rigor and challenging exams. If one cannot do well in this straightforward online course I suggest another career path!
Unlike other online classes this one is easy to navigate. Yes it is somewhat difficult, it is called college. Provides bonus assignments to assist students. Responds quickly to emails. I met him in person and found a professor truly inspirational and deeply committed to student concerns. Wish all online classes were the same as this one.
He was hilarious and lectures were great but rarely ever actually about History. Seemed impossible to get an A though.
A pretty easy online class to navigate. Really isn't that difficult if you read the chapters you can't just use quizlet, you have to actually read. The online textbook was simple & made it easy to read the chapters so it doesn't feel heavy to read. He does word questions tricky, read carefully. Do wish the time was a few minutes more.
Prof Dunnavent's HIST145 class is no easy ride, but engaging with the material can pay off. The quizzes are tough, but unstuck ai helped me prep efficiently. Worth the effort.
Lazy professor that pulls quiz questions from a databank - then changes words to purposely trick you. Some answers are incorrect. Couple video lectures, zero contained any history. I enjoyed the material that I taught myself using the book. I would avoid him, if possible, especially if you want more than what the book has to offer.
I have taken quite a few online classes and all of them entail course readings from single or multiple sources as is to be expected. Yet, unlike other instructors Dr. Dunnavent's online course was easy to navigate, we were given extra credit writing assignments, and he was quick to respond to emails. It was challenging, but fair.
Although this is a required class but not part of my major, I find Dr. Dunnavent's ability to talk to students not at them a refreshing trait. Also, his desire to let everyone feel engaged and taking an active not passive role in the class and to listen to student feedback nothing less than brilliant. Strongly support him and his teaching style!
Dr. Dunnavent only uses Exams as grades, so if you bomb one of the exams, it could ruin your grade for the remainder of the semester. His lectures are enjoyable, but he likes to go on unrelated tangents about his personal life.
Dr. D was amazing. Sometimes he gets lost in rabbit holes during his lectures but he keeps the class open and interesting. Some questions on his tests will be ones you've never seen before so be prepared. I went to all his office hours to prepare for my tests and ask extensive questions about the material on the tests.
i agree with the guy who said he took questions from databanks and reworded them to trick you. he did do that, and every single on i got wrong. but other than that hes easy and gives no final exams (for online at least) and wasnt proctored. easy class for easy credits!!
Ok, both previous comments 1. Test bank questions, pure speculation 2. I got an A as I carefully read and therefore was not “tricked,” to select a wrong answer, I simply paid attention. Class is easy to navigate, Professor responded swiftly to my emails and text was a good read. I did all the bonus got a grade dropped could not ask for more.
This class is reading-heavy, but the professor offers 3–4 chances for extra credit. His lectures are funny and engaging, and he clearly cares about student success. Nothing is proctored, but quizzes have tricky wording, so read carefully. Overall, I'd definitely take him again!
Only uses tests
Dr. Dunnavent is one of the best professors I have had. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. He offers bonus point opportunities quite often. He is a stickler for rules and policies. He can also ramble sometimes, but overall, he is a great professor.
I took loads of detailed notes. I could ask question freely as professor was very engaged with students. He would halt class say everything good? If someone requested further information he provided it. He generated discussions. Tests were multiple choice. They were challenging but one had limitless resources to find the correct answer. LSUS's Best
Only gives tests, no assignments, and goes on 30 minute rants during every lecture about his life
Lots of reading, expected that it's an online class. I've never had a professor give realistic bonus as this one did. Also never had a professor make videos and talk to the class, this one did. Modules and syllabus clear and super easy to navigate! One must keep up or will not score high. I focused on other classes or would have performed better!
