Worst class ever.. most unclear professor.. do not take him
He is a brilliant Professor that is more often misjudged. He provides more than enough clear (and funny) examples, but he is not very good at carrying on class discussion. A bit of patience will make his class very worth while.
Dr. Dutton gave me the most constructive feedback on a paper that I have ever received in college. He's excited about discussing philosophy outside the classroom, and it is clear that he loves what he does. I would recommend him, esp. for medieval phil.
not bad for philosophy. easy A.
Not my favorite professor, but, with some effort, you can pass. You gotta really love philosophy to actually enjoy the class though.
hard class if you aren't familiar with logic he is more than willing to help after class and for some reason it makes more sense then, plus no attendance policy
Not the greatest philosophy professor. He has trouble teaching the material, and he is unable to manage the class. His policies are good, but his style needs improvement.
Pretty nice and pretty easy. Can get A's and B's without reading the material but taking notes in class. Can be really boring, but good if your just looking to get 120 out of the way.
Dr. Dutton is intelligent well-informed in a variety of disciplines. He uses funny examples to convey difficult or abstract concepts. The class isn't demanding, but good notes are a must. There are 3 tests and 2 papers, all based on the notes.
Prof. Dutton makes the material understandable. There are 3 tests and two papers. As long as u show some effort in ur paper u can get a C. Tests are pretty easy and come right from the notes. The material is good to read but it is not essential to pass
I went to class for the first half of the semester. He confused me so much i took to teaching myself. I get better grades NOT going to class! so Unclear!!!!! I hated it. So i stopped going. Still getting a B +
He is a terribly intelligent and patient person, and a skillful professor. Knowledgable in many areas and has creative ways of simplifying the most complex concepts. He totally opened my mind to ideas I before felt were beyond grasp.
The class starts out easy enough. Then it takes a sudden turn for the worse about 6 weeks in. What you once thought was manageable is now overwhelming and the tests become impossible. It is like learning chinese.
Dutton is a fair prof. He is very clear. He makes all concepts easy to grasp. I learned a lot in his section and I don't regret taking it.
He is very clear in his lectures. Is usually fair in his grading. If you pay attention in class and take good notes you should get a good grade. Go to class because he makes everything easy to understand.
Interesting class, covers lots of good topics. A little hard on paper grading but pretty straightforward.
skipped 50% and still had an A... you do the math
class was ok, i got a B. it was difficult to make myself go though, and he scared me (creeeeeepy guy). i've had multiple nightmares about him.
Fairly easy A. He oversimplifies most concepts and is very easy going and an lenient grader. He is a little creepy..Girls watch what you wear.
Prof Dutton is a really nice guy, but class can be a little dull. He means well, and is extremely knowledgable about what he's teaching. He simplifies the readings in class, so take good notes and you'll be fine.
He is a very nice teacher. He lectures basically from the text but he makes it a lot more understandable for students. He is enthusiastic to give help, clear about the material, tests aren't too hard, mostly from the notes, so take good notes.
YOu all LIE, he is HORRIBLE!!! i did so bad in that class and it's supposed to be easy. he screws you on the tests and makes them impossible and doesn't care if everyone fails. in fact i think he likes it. HORRIBLE DO NOT TAKE HIM!

He is not a LOSER!He is extremely knowledgable and fair with assignments. He grades hard on papers- this is a university!!! He will help you out with anything you don't understand. I got a B in this class and its worth it. Hair or Not-it's impertinent.
very easy class, explans everything in detail, must memorize stuff but really, there isnt a reason not to memorize it its so easy..i have him for 13th and 14th century phil now and it seems just as easy
Really nice guy- gets going on entirely unrelated tangents that take up the whole class period, but he's really knowledgeable, about a wide range of things. The class is super-easy, you don't even have to go to class if you look over the book for 1/2 hour before the test. Good prof, overall.
Nice guy, very intelligent. I enjoyed the class. Highly recommend.
Boring lecturer. Where I disagree with other writers is, I think he's really hot! I know, he's bald as a cueball; so is James Carville. The fact is, Dr. Dutton is 6' or 6'1", in GREAT shape (imagine him in tight spandex biking shorts!). He works out and has really big biceps.
What a phony! He teaches philosophy, but has no degree in the subject. (His degree is in "Religious Studies"). His dissertation is on a French philosopher, but doesn't speak a word of French. He teaches Informal Logic, but is completely ignorant of new developments in the field. That's like a geneticist who's never heard of DNA!

I am going to fail that class because he doesn't explain anything! I am so confused and so is half my class and he doesn't give 2****s.
Honestly, I looked him up on this site before I signed up and I dont know what the h*ll you are all talking about! This guy is absolutely horrible!!! He cant explain anything to the students and almost discourages class participation because he makes an ass out of anyone who tries to contribute! do NOT take this class!!! He's and @ss.
a very very creepy looking man, try to avoid because his lectures are extremely boring and half the time students have to correct him or also he gives weird examples like alien abduction
This logic class was boring!!!!! He has no clue what he is talking about and sometimes it was the srudents who read the book who knew more than him!!!! If you read and study on your own you will do very well in the class. If you expect him to teach you and learn from lectures, forget it. The nice thing is that you dont have to show up to clss!!!!!!
Absolutely horrible. The worst ever. The guy has no clue. You'll learn more reading the book. I wish I'd known before I took the class. Very creepy guy; women stay away.
Listen, Blake Dutton is a great guy. Not every professor is going to pander to his or her students. You are in college to learn, not be entertained. Buck up and quit complaining when you get a professor who is going to make you earn your "A".
Worst prof ever. He digresses, loses the thread of the topic under discussion, and makes pronouncements on subjects of which he is completely ignorant. And he's arrogant to boot. A pompous, posturing ass.
Dr. Dutton clearly has issues he needs to work out. Until then, he SHOULD NOT be teaching - ESPECIALLY at a co-ed institution!!!

Really creepy guy. Looks like a serial killer. Not helpful with student questions. But i do have to say his exams are relatively fair. He doesnt give as confusing of questions as the text does. this one is only good if u dont need much help on the material.

I don't understand why Dr. Dutton isn't everyone's favorite professor. He is a dull, sarcastic, fascinating, and brilliant individual with an interesting outlook on things. Just listen to this guy in between his lectures. His tests are always fair, despite the material. But be careful, he won't hesitate to fail (I bet he'd enjoy it, too).

What a stiff! His appearance is so cadaverous that I almost checked him for a pulse. But after listening to him, I was the one almost dead - from boredom! Don't bother with this one. A real snooze!
This ancient philosophy class was terrible. Don't do any thinking on your own, it will not be appreciated. There were always concepts on the exams we had never discussed and he is neurotic about what vocabulary you use. He is a terrible instructor and teaches against what many other prof.'s do on the same subjects.
WAY below-average. Should not be teaching at an institution of higher learning! Perhaps at a junior high, or special-ed class.
The material was clear. It was Blake Dutton who was confused. He's bloody awful!
Worst Prof EVAH! Just reads from the book, like a drone. Which is a GOOD thing, 'cause when he tries to explain, he gets all bolluxed up. Puh-leez! Put this guy in a library carrel, and let him research the Middle Ages, only don't let him teach real, live breathing students!
Despite the teacher's awesome good looks, I would not recommend the class to anyone. He is not clear in his presentation or explainations.
Lacks the necessary grasp of material. He is not a philosopher by degree and really unqualified.

This class was the absolute pits. He had no idea what he was doing and couldn't care less about students. It was like he wasn't there.

Well, you know the old saying, those who can't do, teach. This guy kicked around for years before Loyola offered him a job. Turns out those other schools which turned him down were right. He's arrogant as all get-out, which is amusing, 'cause he doesn't know what the heck he's talking about. Doesn't know his subject, and students know it better
Mother of Pearl, where did they find this turkey? He's awful and obnoxious to boot - makes my skin crawl! Ladies, watch out, or better yet take a different section.
The class was terrible. He is arrogant and SO superior - a real sadist! I'll bet he'd enjoy having you on your hands and knees licking his boots! And I wouldn't be surprised if he carries handcuffs and a riding crop in his back pocket!
He destroyed my intellectual curiousity as well as my faith in education. Mr. Dutton is a teacher in the 19th century mold - learn by rote, spew back on test, discipline and punish(he's into it!).
I thought he was good. He put forth the effort to make the material easier to understand, and showed sincere interest in trying to help if there was ever confusion.

A "professor" in name only.
I never heard an original thought come out of his mouth. He parrots what's in the book. He also hiccups a lot and can't stop
Overall, pretty decent class, readings were interesting and class was bearable. Although I really didn't see how some of the readings were related to ethics. Class lectures were captivating but we always ran over. Oh well, he wasn't scheduled to teach this summer class anyway so I suppose that he did the best he could given the circumstances.

The worst excuse for a professor I've ever had.
Blake Dutton: Took his class. Found it DULL! Thought him pompous. 'Nuff said!
Sometimes he would be really boring, but other days he was really funny! He's a geek in a really weird way. I thought he did kind of know what he was talking about. If you study the book, you should do fine for your tests and quizzes cause he makes them really easy.
In the first place, he's not a Philosopher. He's kind of like the wrestling coach who teaches High School math and winds up thinking he's a mathematician - with predictably disastrous results for his students!
It's a difficult class, but he's a really good teacher. I'm not very good at Logic, but he explained things simply enough and recognizes what concepts students usually find to be more difficult than others. I would definitely take the class again and would recommend it to others looking to fulfill the quant. analysis core requirement.
I've had him for two classes and he's a great teacher. Test and essays cover the material but are easy because he explains everything VERY WELL in class. And unlike other teachers, he actually explains and exemplifies the material with examples that help you understand it. He's also very straight forward about everything. Loved it!
He wasn't too bad for a Logic teacher...if you go to class you will be fine. Redo do hoework problems done in class to study for test and you will be fine. 4 test; not culmative...not a bad class to take.
The reading is sort of optional, he goes over the relevant excerpts in class. The lectures are clear and he's a sweet dude!
He is a really interesting instructor. I had no idea what logic was before entering this class but in just one short semester he got me hooked to it. Logic is a really easy quantitative core class and i highly recommend you take it w/ him as a teacher. He's also very funny and looks like a modern day philosopher. Tips for passing: practice old HW.
Great teacher! his lectures are very very clear, so the reading is sort of optional as long as you go to class. Very interesting, very smart, nice guy.
he is a very good teacher, very interesting. i don't go that often because it's an early class and i still have an A, but going is helpful because all you do is example problems the entire class. I recommend this class for everyone, much better than a math class.
He is a great teacher! He is more than willing to help. He is great at explaining concepts. Dr. Dutton is funny, smart, and likeable! TAKE LOGIC WITH DUTTON!!!
I originally signed up for logic with Hugh Miller. I dropped Miller and took Dutton the next semester. Wow! What a difference. Things I couldn't understand with pompous Hugh were clear with Dutton. He really does care about his students progress in the class. In ancient phil, lectures are sort of dry at times, but hey! It's ancient phil! Take him.
I thought Blake Dutton is a pretty great teacher. He doesn't take for granted that his students know as much about philosophy as they probably should, so he clearly explains everything. It may seem like he's posing very basic and obvious questions, but he really encourages learning that way. So many seminarians in that class!
Good Professor. Most students by 304 have seen the material, but he taught it better and clearer. Don't actually have to read at home since alot is covered in class. He makes the most ancient ideas simpler and modern.
Quite a paradox here: GREAT guy who'd you love to chat with, but could not recommend as prof. Very hot :)
What a phony! He's read like three books in his entire life (Silence, Chronicle of a Death Foretold and The Plague) which he manages to work into every conversation. He basis his logic class on ideas which are more than 50 years out of date. And he's SO arrogant and pompous.
Glad to see so many members of Blake's immediate family are posting favorable comments. That's the only explanation for the positive feedback. Seriously, this guy's terrible. Avoid his class at all costs!
Absolutely phenomenal. Extremely clear. HIGH entertainment value. Hilarious examples.
he is very entertaining during lectures. He goes off on bizarre tangents about random things that have no relation to logic. Logic isn't an exciting subject for me but it was probably the only class i had this semester that i looked forward to, just because this guy can be hilarious.
Honestly the worst teacher I've ever had, very opinionated and nothing you ever say (your views opinions) are right. He's soooo slow at explaining or summarizing the lectures.....totally sucks....take a different discussion leader for honors!!!
Terrible, terrible terrible. This professor isn't even considered good by the other professors that teach this course. A friend told me their professor had said, "If a competent professor had given today's lecture..." Dutton does not speak on topic and on the few occasions that he does he is just giving a synopsis. I gained nothing from his class.
Sometimes gets off topic during discussion (usually the tangent helps students understand the context in which the author was writing). Went in during office hours and received the most helpful critiques on my writing. Very opinionated, but good professor.
Okay, so he's really not THAT bad. He's very passionate and intelligent, and I could see him being really good in his own Philosophy classes...but not Honors seminar, where he can't really teach his own way. He's super opinionated and doesn't really like it if your opinion differs. That was my main problem with him.
Dutton is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He doesn't tell you exactly what he wants, and then grades tests and papers very critically. Doesn't add up. His lectures are SOOOOOOO boring. Don't take this class. Take any other professor or wait until another semester. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH BLAKE DUTTON.
Dutton is an amazing professor. He's not going to hold your hand; he's going to make you work hard and learn the material. Only grades are 4 tests over about 5 sections each. Dutton is hilarious and an amazing professor. Logic was the best class I've taken at Loyola!!
Dutters doesn't know how to lead a discussion. He stands there with an awkward grin waiting for someone to ask a question. Then he doesn't have much room to tolerate opinions differing from his. Oh and real boring. Only take this if you are a masochist or like odd grins.
Oh, wow. Apparently any opinion that differs from his is wrong. I would strongly recommend taking this class with a different Professor.
He is going to make you work, doesn't like people giving their opinions, phrasing it better..kind of mean when people give their opinions, but a good professor, so just sit there, do the readings and keep your mouth shut.. 4 tests, one paper- all he grades you on
He is awful. He does not return e-mails. He is not clear on what he wants for his ID's, essay portion; and his MC has different answers possible. Everyone that wrote you must share his opinions is correct, you can not think for yourself in this course. You should do the first essay prompt, they just get harder. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!!
Mr. Dutton is a real nice guy and helpful when it comes to making up tests, but his lectures are EXTREMELY boring. Tests are hard, and essays are hard. Definitely wouldn't recommend. He always let us out of class 5 minutes late. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Very nice guy, but his lectures are TRULY BORING!! It will be even worse if you don't like Philosophy. The class material isn't interesting whatsoever and he doesn't attempt to make class interesting or worth coming to. He is helpful when it comes to making up tests or going over material however, but other than that I do not recommend.
He is the worst professor i have had yet. He is so rude and does not care if his students do well. He is unclear on what the exams are on and his lectures are way to boring. WORST PROFESSOR AT LOYOLA. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
WORST TEACHER OF LIFE! SAVE YOURSELF NOW. Class is super boring and attendance is not mandatory so he doesnt care who is there or not.his tests are impossible. always tells you to go more in dept with essays even when you were as detailed as possible. 4 exams, 2 papers. doesnt care about others opinions. its his way or no way.
Probably the worst experience I've ever had at Loyola. He is very unclear and always tells you to go more in depth. Any opinion other than his own is wrong and on top of all that his classes are very boring and uninteresting.
Blake Dutton is an amazing professor, and I believe he is extremely underrated. He is a genius, and his intriguing personality made me look forward to every lecture. I can easily say that he is my favorite professor so far. He is extremely funny and helpful.
Dr. Dutton is my favorite professor this semester. You have to work hard and read the required texts, but Dutton makes the class very enjoyable. He's very helpful in office hours and takes it into account when he's grading papers and exams. Highly recommend!
If you want to get an A in this class, come to all the lectures, write down word for word what he says and put that in your essays. He does not like to hear any opinions different than his. Read the books or sparknotes will do just fine and participate somewhat and you will get a good grade. Write down anything he writes on the board.
Go to class and write down exactly what he writes on the board. Don't share your opinions in class, he'll dismiss them immediately. He can be rather pompous and condescending. All of the exams are short answer and essay question so you need to write down exactly what he says in lecture to get an A.
He really was not that great of a teacher and seemed to dislike me from pretty early on in the year just because I was having trouble in his class. His tests included defining vocab from the unit but it could basically be anything from the reading or lecture and if your answer is not just about exactly what he wants, it's wrong.
Prof. Dutton isn't the best choice when it comes to HONR 101 discussion leaders, but I was not disappointed in any way during the semester. He's clear, focused, very intelligent and, on more than one occasion, helped me understand concepts I would have been completely lost on otherwise. Solid professor, definitely recommended!
If you meet with him he will tell you how you need to study and explain why you got something wrong. Class is more of a conversation than lecture and sometimes he will challenge the student to defend it's position. Attendance not mandatory but you won't pass with a good grade/at all if you don't show up.
Love this teacher, I hated him at first but it just got better throughout the semester. He's literally hilarious, his sarcasm kills me.
Dutton can be abrasive at first. In discussion, he will shut down "wrong" ideas quick. Dutton is a fantastic professor. He really knows his stuff and you will learn! Tough at grading, but fantastic with feedback. His lectures are probably my favorite out of all the Honors professors: they're engaging, informative, and appropriately funny.
He's a tough grader: I got a B on every paper, even after going to office hours. Naturally, I was concerned for my grade. However, he is so great at explaining the texts in discussion that I would get As on the exams, thus giving me an A- in the class. So the take away is that his tough grading is made up for by his exam preparation (& his humor).
Really fun professor. Class was usually interesting and discussions were actually discussions instead of a lecture. You won't get easy A's on papers, but he's very helpful over email and during office hours; as long as you bring some ideas of your own, he'll help you develop them and guide you in your writing. We were well prepared for exams.
Dutton is sarcastic and funny. Although his lectures can be kind of boring, he tries to engage the class as much as he can. Very helpful over email and outside of class if needed. Exams are hard if you don't take notes/pay attention in class. Philosophy is a hard subject to grasp if you don't try and immerse yourself in it.
Prof. Dutton is a nice guy but just doesn't understand that students have other classes besides Philosophy and needs to chill with the test difficulty a bit. Need a textbook to have any chance at success. Lectures dry and expects everyone to understand the info instantly. He picks favorites. The talkers get the benefit of the doubt on tests too.
He had the best lectures out of all the professors in HONR101
Dr. Dutton doesn't try to make the class overly challenging since it's a core requirement, but if you're not a fan of philosophy or lots of reading, it may be pretty boring for you. On the plus side, he clearly explains the readings in class, and the tests and papers are not hard if you take notes in class.
Professor Dutton was okay. His lectures were kind of boring and slow paced. I know some people like him better for discussion than as a lecturer. Im not sure why, but something about his style of lecturing just rubbed me the wrong way. Overall, though, he is certainly not the worst lecturer.
This class was pretty boring- partly because of the professor. He seemed unprepared most days, and graded the though papers way too hard.
Lectures are unbelievably boring & it's just him explaining the text for an hour. Attempts to increase participation, but when someone has an opinion he doesn't agree with, he gets defensive. Very intolerant to other perspectives, which led to an overall decrease in class discussion. Always has an excuse to not give a 10/10 on Thought Papers.
I thought he did a great job of teaching a core class. If you do not enjoy philosophy the lectures might seem slow but as long as you take good notes the essays and tests are not too difficult. He's an awkward guy who likes class participation but my class was kinda quiet. He questions your beliefs which is refreshing and makes you think.
I finished Professor Dutton's class with an A+. While the class was not difficult as long as you attend lectures, Professor Dutton is completely unbearable. He routinely berates and disrespects students after asking them to debate with him as he cannot handle anyone having a political or social opinion that differs from his own.
Class is pretty easy. Just show up for class and tests are fine. I never turned in one of the papers and still got an A. He's really nice and accommodating too, but lectures can be awkward because he opens up the room for discussion a lot, and people either just stare at him or come out left field with the most out-of-pocket political takes.
Dutton is such a strange and awkward man it makes him so endearing. He loves students who engage in class- hates awkward silence, loves controversial discussion. The class is easy to pass, just take good notes and study directly from them. 4 papers, 4 tests, final. Never had to read a single thing outside of class b/c he reads it to you anyway.
Blake Dutton had painfully long and boring lectures. If nobody discussed our asked questions about his points, he would make things very silent and awkward until someone did. But if they did, he would often say they were wrong, even if other students disagreed with him too. His tests were all handwritten with very little time to complete.
Although his lectures do tend to be on the boring side, he is genuonley a very kind and chill professor. He is very funny, and the class is pretty fun when the students engage with him which is a good amount of the time, he is a pretty easy grader too. I looked forward to his lectures because they were always pretty interesting. like storytime!
He does assign pretty hefty readings, but, he does talk about them in person enough to understand the topic without reading them. He's not a hard professor, just does the work. very fun, very nice.
genuinely a chill teacher, you don't have to read the texts because he explains them so in depth. This class is only hard if you genuinely don't pay attention and put in 0 effort. He's a great teacher and a pretty easy grader.
Professor Dutton's class is manageable if you attend lectures and take good notes. He likes class discussions, but can get defensive if opinions differ from his. unstuck AI was a big help for studying and essay prep.
Very boring lectures, but the class was overall pretty easy. Prof. Dutton puts the readings on Sakai, but we always go over them in class. The hard part was the exams, because that is almost the only way he grades, aside from occasional papers. If you don't do well on the exams, you're gonna struggle. Just pay attention in class and you'll be fine.
Dr. Dutton is a passionate lecturer. Attendance was optional, but every lecture was packed with content, so it's important to go to every class if you want to keep up. He explains the all the readings during class. We were graded on 2, short analytical papers and 3 tests plus a final exam. The exams were multiple choice and short essays.
Professor Dutton is clearly very knowlegable on the topics covered in PHIL 182 and makes it very clear what his expectations are. You need to read but I found the reading to be interesting so it was not bad.
Entirely lecture-based class, doesnt take attendence, but if u don't show up ur toast because the exams are just based off the lecture. Lectures were boring but IMO that's just bc its so hard to understand the abstract material until you sit alone and study it, then suddenly its not bad. He's a quick and fair grader, and he gives great feedback
He's a bit interesting. It is clear he is really smart and well read, but he's kind of impossible to talk to. If you ask questions that deviate from what he believes, he'll kind of just be like "idk" and move on. Lectures are a little dry and often confusing, but he means well. Pretty relaxed grader, attendance is not mandatory.
Professor Dutton was great. Tough but fair. Not sure why he references a old band, Happy The Man weekly. Seems dated perhaps. Learned a lot in his class. More than my roommate, Charlie, who generally missed due to sleeping in. Professor Dutton seems slightly obsessed with the song 'Jolene by Dolly Parton.
Dr. Dutton is extremely friendly, he goes over every reading thoroughly in class so you don't technically need to read on your own time. He tells you exactly what to expect for homework and exams. Incredibly knowledgable and passionate about the material. Take this class if you are interested in philosophy.
Awful. Just don't take him. Grading is very subjective. Always has some comment about your work that isn't related to the subject, but rather because you have a different belief/idea than him. Every class is a long, boring lecture... and he rambles. Class is only graded by tests and papers. Expects too much for a Tier 1 CORE class.
If you are interested in Philosophy (minor/major) it wouldn't make sense not taking this class or another taught by him. If you're not interested in reading, perfect he goes over every reading in detail. Attendance isn't mandatory but I recommend it as it makes the class much easier. Most interesting class I've taken, don't hesitate
