I took Westerland my freshman year at UWEC, and he still remembers my name and work I've done 3 years later. He's a great guy, and his teaching style is so laid back that the material was fun to learn. I'd advise anyone to take his classes.

Blake is the bomb. He is so much fun. This was the easiest 8am I'll ever have. He jokes around and keeps class fun, while still teaching you a ton of valuable info. He also helps you out with a lot more than just english. He was also very personable and friendly and really gets to know his students. I would definately recommend him.

Blake is SO friendly. He gives a lot of reading, but there are only short quizes to see if you read the material. He chose a lot of books that I think the entire class enjoyed. There were a few papers (no tests until the final), but he grades very fairly! I will definately take him again.

Eng 181 is a pretty time consuming class. 3 essays(5-6pgs) 4 responses(3-4pgs)and a midterm. Just make sure to run your paper by him before submitting the final copy and you will do fine.

Blake is a great teacher who really cares about his students. However english 181 is a very time consuming class and should not be taken concurrently with english 110.

Blake is an awesome professor!! I wasnt even interested in film...until NOW! He makes the class fun and really gets you interested in the topic. You dont use the textbook much, and we only had one test and it was MULTIPLE CHOICE! The papers are difficult at first cause you dont know what hes looking for, but after a few begin to catch on. RECOMMEND

Blake is an amazing person and an amazing friend. He takes time, and makes time, for you always. Very E-mail efficient. Quizz's almost every day in textbook readings and is a tough essay grader. Other than the toughness of the workload and the time management for all the writing, he's wonderful and gets to know his students on a personal level.

Best teacher ever!!! He is very helpful and there are only 3 papers due the whole class. But they aren't just any papers, they are on movies we watch in class. Fun movies not boring school type movies. Take this class if needing an english credit! He is the best teacher by far.and he is there for any question you have even if not related to class.

everyone will like this guy. one of my top favorite profs ever, never talked to anyone-any age, any class-who didn't like him. lots of quizzes but they are short and easy, just skim the readings. expect to be a better writer if you put any effort into the class. fyi-movies are pretty recent and you will have to rent some for the papers.

it seems too good to be true, but Blake is a great teacher. work hard on your essays and make sure to say something during discussions. you won't need to force yourself to laugh at his jokes, because they're funny as hell.

Blake was amazing. He almost only teaches early classes (mine was 8 am every day) but he makes the class exciting enough to stay awake in. Great teacher, he really wants you to succeed. Blake Westerlund's class is a delight. If you make it through UWEC without taking Engl 201 with Westerlund, you messed up. Don't do that to yourself. Make sure you take advantage of his office hours when writing papers, really helpful.

The class is super fun but 3 hours long you will never fall asleep he keeps you awake! the major 2 papers are time consuming but easy! he says there are quizzes and we had 2 so just show up work hard and do good on your 2 essays and it is a great time! you will adore him when the class ends

Probably the funniest and most entertaining Prof I have ever had. Somewhat reading intensive but only occassional pop quiz and 3 papers so not much other work. Word to the wise, do not take in the same semester as a history class,WAY too much reading

Funny professor! Extremely helpful and his discussions can be interesting. I was disappointed with the essays we had to write for this class: 4 essays using literature critics' ideas. If you despise writing papers, I wouldn't take this class. Otherwise, a very good prof.

Blake is a great professor! 2 papers, 6 quizzes (he drops the lowest score), and 1 group presentation. The quizzes are focused on your interpretation of the reading. (they are usually 120-180 words). Wonderful guy, who knows how to keep class fun and interesting.

GREAT professor!! Creates a comfortable classroom environment. Students work in small groups to discuss readings. Knows how to explain concepts in a way that's interesting and easy to understand. Expectations are clear. Grades fairly. Wants all of his students to succeed. Good for people who've never taken a lit course! Wish he taught more courses!

Blake is very energetic and knows how to keep his students interested. He likes to joke around and can make the students laugh. He also does a good job of teaching the course material and is very helpful through email whenever you have questions. He often provides examples and lots of help for those who are unsure of what to do. I HIGHLY recommend!

Professor Westerlund is a fantastic teacher and person. You will learn so much with him. There are usual readings, but no other daily homework. 4 papers and 2 presentations will take up most of your time. However, he is a very strict grader. I consider myself a good writer, and I haven't received anything above a B+. Be prepared! He expects a lot!

I took Blake for Intro to Texts and loved him. Made getting up at 9am everyday completely worth it. You've got to write a lot of papers but he makes them really interesting, while also giving you plenty of time and feedback. Westerlund made me love being a Creative Writing major even more than I already did. I would love to take him again!

A lot of the texts we read dealt with very heavy issues, but the class never felt like a downer. A lot of your grade depends on a few papers, but Blake is very willing to help you through the writing process. Great professor!

I took two of his classes for my first semester at UWEC and he was amazing! I wouldn't say his class is an easy A, but if you do the reading and are willing to come up with exciting essay ideas, he will work with you as much as you need. He is so helpful, and I became a much better writer through his classes.

Blake is an awesome prof. Though his 210 class is very tough it is definitely worth your while. He is always there to help you and loves talking with people. He also has lots of stories that he finds a way of wrapping into his lesson. I also love his literature choices He would be a good advisor if you are a new English major or looking to switch.

It's been a few semesters since I've had his class, but he is hands the best professor I've had. He's clear with his expectations, and if not he is more than willing to answer any questions. Somehow, he responded to emails almost immediately. He has an idiosyncratic (perhaps hipster) personality. It is obvious he genuinely cares for students.

Writing was never my thing but I took Blakes class and it changed my outlook on writing. He really helps and cares about his students. It was a lot of work writing all the papers but it really helped my overall writing because he gives great feedback and prepares his students well.

He is a great professor, the books are fun to read and the class discussions are interesting. He does a good job of keeping the lectures interesting and entertaining. The class consists of 3 exams and daily clicker questions, along with this you have daily readings and you read 5 books. Overall I would definitely recommend taking a class from him.

As a person, Blake is wonderful. I am not an "english person" so I personally think the class is on the harder side. You are only graded on 3 tests and the final is cumulative. If you are good at English, the class should be a breeze. He doesn't assign a ton a reading, but a fair amount. Tests aren't easy, but aren't hard.

Amazing professor. He so clearly cares greatly for his students and the material he teaches and it makes the class really enjoyable and made me care even more about the material. I didn't like poetry until this class! Also a pretty funny guy which is nice. The readings are all very interesting though it was easy to get behind, good discussions too

Blake is great, he makes a lot of bad/punny jokes but knows that they're bad. There is a lot of novel and short story reading but it's an English class- what are you expecting? Blake made the class as engaging as possible considering I took it in a 100+ person lecture hall. Exams aren't bad if you've kept up on readings.

I love Blake! Took Writing 116 to fulfill my university writing requirement and I am so happy I took it with him. Because he loves film our lectures were about thrillers and different films compared to other 116 classes which are only about writing basics. He is so funny and makes lecture fun. You do have to read several novels, but I never actually read them and used spark notes and got A's on every test and ended with an A in the class so don't fret.

With his great sense of humor, I think anyone would enjoy his classes. The texts he chooses are very interesting! He comes off as a difficult grader sometimes, but never will you get a grade lower than A- if you try to meet the criteria. I would recommend reading the primary texts before the week it's being read. It helps save a lot of time!

For each essay he will make sure to meet with you about the paper. It might seem annoying to be "forced" into going in for office hours, but his feedback is always great to hear, and he is such a fun, nice guy the meeting usually feels like you're talking to a friend. If I had more space, I would never stop writing about how great Blake is.

Blake is a great professor! You have to be willing to read the course novels, but most of them were actually pretty interesting. The exams are an easy A if you listen in discussion and read the novels. There are iclickers everyday, so participation and attendance matter.

He does grade a little hard because its english, but hes very approachable and is genuinely happy to help you outside of class. Hes passionate about what he does and he makes the content very interesting. The movies do take a lot of time though.

He is very sweet. Gives good feedback and will help you succeed. I hope I can take a class with him again.

One of the best professors at UWEC. Very approachable, understanding, and has a great sense of humor. Do the work he assigns and you'll get a A.

One of the best, most caring professors I've ever had! He's a bit of a tough grader but nothing out of the usual for a 300 level lit class. He is super willing to give feedback on any assignment, so show up to his office hours or set up a meeting with him! I hope to take more classes with Blake :) ALSO BE AWARE that he will NOT accept late work!!!

Professor Westerlund has been one of the best professors I have yet been fortunate enough to have in the English department at Eau Claire. His responses to your essays are honest and helpful, but also really encouraging . His lectures are always fun and group-based, & he truly takes the time for his students. I really recommend any of his classes!

Blake was a really great professor to have for this class. He was great at giving feedback and guidance when writing the main papers. He genuinely wants his students to do well in his class and he helps them get there. I highly recommend this professor for any class you can take with him.

I got violently ill halfway through my most recent semester. I have been almost non-functional. Blake is the only professor who responded to my email with care and structure and a way to get me back on track. An amazing teacher who truly cares about his students. I could not recommend him more.

Professor Blake is a really nice and understanding guy and you would be lucky to have him as a professor. He can ramble on some throughout class but it's pretty entertaining. I got very sick at the beginning school, missed a quiz and a paper. He excused the quiz and told me to turn in the paper whenever I wanted to. One of the nicest people ever.

I loved having Blake as a professor! He cared about his students and he did grade hard enough to know where you went wrong. I had him for a five credit course, and I would do it again. LOVE BLAKE!

Blake truly cares about his students and will help you with anything. There are some long readings, but the quizzes are very straightforward as long as you do the readings. If you have the opportunity to take one of Blake's classes, I would highly recommend it!

Love Blake and lecture isn't mandatory could do everything online. 5 question and 5 point easy quizzes on the readings. American Spy really good book, The Spy Caught in the Cold I just watched the movie.

Blake is one of my fav prof. at UWEC. Attendance wasn't mandatory and could easily stay on track through the Canvas page. He's so wholesome and truly cares about his students and loves to tell stories. If you need an easy class for LE credits, TAKE A CLASS WITH BLAKE!!!

Blake's lectures were the reason I went to class. I love hearing all of his fun stories. I never felt pressured to participate due to the smaller groups and TA's. Blake is so caring and it really shows in his lectures. I would 100% take a class with him again if my schedule allowed it.

Blake is the best professor ever. Despite my course being accelerated it felt easy, and I looked forward going to every lecture. He always did his best to interact with us during lecture by telling stories, asking silly icebreaker questions, and always answered my emails quick. I felt like he truly respects his students as young adults.

If you don't like reading and a discussion-based class, do not take Blake. BUT if you want to have fun conversations about the books in class and really dig into the reading then you will LOVE having Blake as a professor. He really cares about his students and will stop and talk to you anywhere. I love going to that class every time.

I've never been so impressed with an online course. I felt like I knew Blake well by the end of it because of his amazing feedback, ability to respond to emails SO WELL, and super fun messages on each assignment. Tough grader, but his feedback is so good it's an easy fix for future work. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend!!

This professor was awesome! I always looked forward to this class because Blake was so kind and caring and you can really tell that his students are his top priority.

Lots of reading, but great books. Quizzes on the reading so make sure you really read. A couple papers but pretty simple and really gets you thinking. Overall great class and great prof.

Very great and open professor loved his lectures. He is very understanding, and most of all funny. There is always room for stories he says. Lots of group discussions. Very textbook/book reading heavy, I think 2 of the books have a movie.

Blake is super awesome! He is very understanding and empathetic. He does sometimes go on (very long) tangents when discussing the readings, but that would not stop me from taking his class again. I 10/10 recommend!

I took this as a Winterm: incredibly easy. Write three essays, each after watching a handful of amazing movies and you're golden. He's a super passionate guy and gives instant, helpful feedback. Honestly just want to give this man a hug :)

I took an English class from Dr. Westerlund 27 years ago, and despite the fact that I did not want to take the class at all, he managed to get me engaged in the class. He made me want to write at my highest level, and other than my parents I credit Blake for making me a strong written communicator, in an age where that is becoming a lost art.

Such a cool guy, highly recommend! Professor Westerlund is dedicated to supporting his students success and loves to share comedic stories during his lectures. It's important to read the assigned material for papers but he spends a good chunk of time clearly explaining his expectations/requirements.

Blake is my favorite professor I've ever had, I learned so much about literary analysis and enjoyed most of the books assigned, course load was very manageable, he inspired a love of reading and critical analysis that I never would have had otherwise. TAKE HIS CLASSES. Very easygoing and loves to talk with students, makes them feel valued.

Blake is so kind! He is a pretty easy grader, and a lot of the grade is based on 3 point tests. As long as you read the novels he assigns, you will have a pretty easy A.

Blake is my all time favorite teacher! If I could take him for everything I would! He is so funny and the stuff we learn about is so interesting! I have never loved a class more. Theres lots of reading but its all good and I usually hate reading. He is very helpful and supporitve, you will get a good grade in this class if you do the work!

I am a 4th year and I had him my first semester here at UWEC and he is still a favorite of mine. He is an angel from heaven so kind and great music tase. Made me excited to write and somehow made a 3-hour class bearable. Just created a great learning environment and everyone in the class was besties after. 100/10 gem of a guy

I love Blake! He is one of the kindest professors I have ever had, and is always making you laugh and telling his own anecdotes and stories. He is a fairly easy grader as well, minimal essays for an English class and easy multiple choice quizzes on readings and viewings we are talking about. I would 100% recommend English majors taking him.

Blake is AMAZING! He is understanding, funny, and ensures his students succeed. His class taught me a lot, and encouraged thinking, but he always offered extra help and support. He cares about his students a lot, and takes the time to get to know them, which definitely sets him apart from other profs. Would recommend to take any of his courses!
