most difficult class to understand that I have taken. Went from an easy B in 106 to an F in 107 despite having an excelent TA (hurray for Mu-wan) merely due to the fact that this man explains nothing, he just does examples. class Avg on the first exam was a 56%. Best advice available...RUN!!!
Same problems as the student who took 107, Bo just does his own thing, regardless of the students needs. Test averages hover around 55-60%. His accent is also tough to understand.
Horrible to understand-- poor English, makes random comments to distract the class... I loved math until I took this class, because he was so unclear and provided no help!
Find the facebook group about him- it says it all...
Do not take this class with this professor. You basically have to teach yourself the class or must get outside help which is really time consuming!! He is NOT good at teaching material and sometimes just doesn't make sense because he is sometimes hard to understand because english is not his primary language...
AVOID THIS TEACHER! Bo is hard to understand. I got so caught up on him constantly saying 'formular', I missed out on what point he was trying to make. He skips around and doesn't clearly explain how to do things. When students asked for help, he told them he could help them - that they needed to go to the math resource center.
try to avoid him as much as possible
Just so you know, the class average for this class is an F everytime for most of the semester and by the end of the semester the average may slide up to a D or C- average if lucky. Needless to say, stay out of this class...get a different professor!
It's like being taught diff EQ by an eight ball. All of his answers are vague and he depends solely and the very poorly written yellow book that we're all so familiar with.

I don't know what everyone else is talking about... this guy was great. He did a very good job of explaining the concepts. My one problem was that he did a lot of examples, but he did enough theory to make me happy. I think our first class average was something like an 85%. (I think we've changed books since the yellow book mentioned below).
a agree with the one right below. he is an EXCELLENT professor. the materials are easy and he explains really good with lots of examples that really help me to understand the chapter. ok, his english might not be perfect but definitely understandable. the tests are not hard at all. the average of both sessions were >80% and i got an A+!!wat to say?
Not very helpful, makes tests completely different than the quizzes. Cannot understand a word the man says.
Very nice, friendly, helpful and open to questions but very difficult to understand - is not clear.
Class average = 60%. Get another professor if you would like to pass Math107.
Gives tests that are neigh impossible to complete given 3 hours, much less the 50 minutes he gives us. He doesn't teach so much as ramble, is never any help, and basically goes out of his way to mess up your grade. I've had to retake this class twice before, and now I'm probably going to have to again, and not because I don't understand it.
Bo is a funny guy; but he is not a good teacher. He definitely is smart and knows his stuff; but he is apparently too smart to be helpful. I had a very hard time in his class and barely passed. Math had been a strong point for me prior to this class. I would not recommend Dr. Deng.
Bo Deng..Although it is evident that he knows a lot about math, he tries to teach it to you as if you already have your PhD. There is a strong language barrier and he can't speak in complete sentences. Also he goes off on random tangents and only teaches using proofs. I don't reccomend him unless you can teach yourself from the book.
Didn't do a great job of explaining the material. Spent too much time on specific homework problems that weren't going to be on the quiz or test. Test were too hard, the class avg was like 55% or 60%. He did not give much of scale to our grades either. Lectures were not good because he's hard to understand and a little boring. Did not care for him.
Difficult Course. The tests and quizzes were rather unpredictable. Lecture was confusing and almost all of my learning was accomplished outside the classroom. I feel I would have learned just as much with the text and no instructor.
if you can't teach yourself the material, choose another professor, because he doesn't do a very good job at teaching the material either.
Extreme boring class? not helpful?finish the course all by myself ? generous giving bonus though
run and hide
I liked Bo, he was funny and helpful when I needed help.
I can understand the people who did not like this professor, but I thought he was fine. His tests are difficult, but with hard work good grades are definitely possible. And you get used to him faster than you think.
He is a horrible teacher. Try to get another teacher if possible. Math used to be my best and favorite subject but that feeling immediately expired with this man. His tests are impossible and averaged around 55-65%. I attended the other math lecture to get double help b/c he's awful. He needs to learn how to teach rather than tell information.
I doubt I'm the best person to be giving advice as I dropped the course because I changed my major, despite having an A. Oh well, here it goes: The lectures are terrible. His knowledge of the material is so advanced that he makes even the simplest problems complex. You'll be fine if you can teach yourself the material... and he offers LOADS of E.C.
My favorite professor by far. Very knowledgeable, studious, exams were not too hard or too easy.
Terrible professor, avoid at all costs, proves everything and explains nothing, hard to understand, class average was an F
Deng is a horrible teacher. In lecture all he went over was proofs for the equations. He shows very few, if any examples of the homework in class. If you want to get anything out of the class make sure you go to the recitations.
I know a lot of people do not like this professor, but I have had him twice now, and he's really not bad. His notes are perfect, and once you learn how to study for his tests, it is relatively easy to do well.
hard to understand and follow. our TA would teach us everything the day after lecture because none of us understood deng. i hope you have a good TA if you take this class-otherwise you're toast.
Very hard to understand and doesn't care about the student. He always thinks that you didn't study and haven't taken time for the class, even if you have put in 20+hrs a week into the class.
Very hard to understand. Tests are difficult and cover material we didn't learn in class. Makes fun of students and their mistakes. Most of the questions that you ask, he doesn't even answer. A majority of the class was failing, half the class dropped, and only 4 people out of 83 have A's. Had to rely on the TA to pass. Do not take this class!!!!!!
Tough class and difficult to understand, but funny. Must take time to go see him outside of class if you want to pass. He will give you examples that are sometimes on the tests. Go in to see him after a test and he will correct your mistakes.Daily homework worth 5pts, weekend homework worth 2 extra credit points. Do not take EC and HW for granted!
Worst teacher I've had in 3 and a half years at UNL. Obviously doesn't want to teach and would rather be doing his research. Says that students can just teach themselves. Also difficult to understand. Listening to his lectures and continually mispronounced "formular" makes you want to scream. RUN!!
Easily the worst professor I've had and I've gone to UNO, Metro and UNL. Goes on random, pointless rants about nothing. Tests are near impossible. Not to mention he's impossible to understand. Take him if you want a death wish.
I had Bo Deng for MATH 208 (CALC III). He teaches strictly off of proofs but if you have someone in the class to guide him to examples then he is very helpful. Dr. Dengles gives a lot of extra credit including extra points on tests and for homework. He also gives multiple test reviews that are useful. Be ready to learn outside of class though.
The good first. Bo Deng gives you the exams with worked out solutions from several previous years. Do these practice tests, and you'll get an A since he barely changes the tests from year to year. Also, he gives extra credit for turning in homework. His notes are alright but good luck trying to understand anything he is says during his lectures....
Would not stay on topic and often rambled about proofs of the things we were learning. It was almost completely unnecessary to attend class other than to hear what the homework assignments were. I received over a 100% and only went to class probably 2/3 of the time. Not a good professor to have if you can't teach yourself the material.
Dr. Deng Bo is awkward. He knows a lot about math but there are many completely pointless things he talks about while giving talks and just talking in general. I once had a conversation with him on the phone, because I was doing something involving chinese and math and he went on pointlessly about how americans do not use *numbers correctly*
Bo was very good at teaching the material and is willing to go over any homework questions from the previous day, which is very helpful. Offers occasional extra credit, which is helpful. Has many office hours and is very willing to help. Shows many old exams, and tests are very similar to the old exams.
Run away. Far. Far away.
Dr. Bo Deng is a very knowledgeable (if eccentric) teacher. I took Calc 3 (MATH 208) with him and it was pretty easy. He is not American born so it may be tough for you to understand him. He sits at his desk and writes on the document camera. Once you learn his teaching style, the class is easy. Does homework problems in class. I'd give him a B+.
He's not that bad.. all you need to do is go to class, pay attention, if you don't understand ASK! through asking you can ace the class.. Also, Go through the earlier tests, because all his tests kinda look the same, which is another good thing about the instructor. Something to be aware of, he gives maple or matlab projects for this class
He is very hard to understand. Does not follow the book. It was a self taught class for the most part. He doesn't seem to be there to teach. Get a different professor for any math class taught by him.
Can't understand him at all, just does proofs the entire lecture instead of doing examples. Our class relies entirely on our TA to even understand what we're learning. I've even already had calculus in high school and got an A nd he managed to confuse me.
This was the worst class I have taken yet at this University. Math is definitely not my strongest subject, but after taking trig last semester and receiving an A, I was really not expecting a 37 PERCENT in this class. The tests are absolutely ridiculous and his lectures do nothing pertaining to them. He is NOT a good teacher. $700 down the drain.
I literally cannot understand anything he says in class because he has such a strong foreign accent. am disappointed that the university would even hire someone like this to teach an essential Ace course. I took AP Calc in high school, and passed with an A (little bit of work) and this is the same course but I am struggling so hard to keep my B-.
I took calculus in high school and got an A, so I expected this to go well and be simply a review for me. I was WRONG. Math isn't my strong suit and I learn best on a step-by-step basis but all he does is go through irrelevant examples without any real explanation. If you have the chance to get a different professor, do it.
Do the homework and attend lectures, even if they confuse or bore you, and consider attending a second lecture with a different professor. After not doing well on the second test, I decided to go to a second lecture and realized that Deng does not teach everything that you need to know if you will continue taking higher math classes.
Not a very good professor. I learn by watching/doing examples, but he really didn't do a whole lot of examples and his examples weren't very good. He did a some things where he's like you won't need to know this but took 10min showing us.
He tells you what's on every exam. As long as you can do the practice exams and study what he tells you to study the tests are easy A's. Homework is also straightforward but he grades it tougher than hs grades the exams.
I'm not sure why everyone is giving him bad ratings. I thought Deng was a good guy. His accent is a little tricky, but easy to get used to. Lectures are helpful and entertaining, and he often interjects with funny stories and jokes. You will have to do homework and study to get a good grade. He won't give you a free A.
Posts past exams that help, but don't bother asking him for help in his office hours. I have gone into his office hours 3 time max over the semester, just keeps stating "if you attended class" talking down to you without letting you clarify what you need assistance on. Weekly homework due, no quizzes, 2 midterms and 1 final. Do not take.
He's hard to understand and is unable to clearly explain things.
Most difficult teacher I have ever had. He is a nice guy, but doesn't understand that his students are failing because of his terrible teaching, not because of their own lack of effort. Our class was filled with high achieving honors student, and we averaged 50% and 60% on our tests, and he doesn't scale. Drop and switch to different section ASAP.
Worst teacher Ive ever had. Ive never failed a class till I had this guy. His accent is not understandable and he cant speak enough english to explain difficult concepts. He also lost one of my tests. Im really upset that I spent 4 grand on his bs. Pretty sure he was removed as an honors teacher
Hard class. It would be unfair to blame him, because the content is very hard. I would suggest taking Calc 2 Non-honors, and then Calc 3 honors. Little sense in torturing yourself by taking it with honors. Deng does a good job teaching, looking back on it. As freshman, I didn't have the perspective to realize that, though. Good prep for adv. math
He teaches things in a very complicated way when they are very straight forward. He grades VERY harshly, but do the practice exams and you will be fine. If you can get into another class, try your hardest to.
He isn't very clear with his words and somewhat hard to understand. In this class I had to read the textbook a lot and teach myself most of the stuff as he did not do a very good job in class. He also does not post grades at all the whole semester so I had no idea what my grade was going into the final.
So hard to understand, so hard to read the writting. Lectures are long and boring. The only good thing I can say is that the test are JUST like the past tests he posts. So study the tests and you'll do fine.
Probably the worst math professor I have ever had. His lectures are hard to follow and are long. Lectures are heavy on theory and really doesn't go over examples. Also he does not enter grades until the end of the semester so you really don't know how you are doing until the end of the semester.
moderate
If I could give him a 0 on the scale, I would. This is probably the worst math professor I've had so far. His lecture is so hard to follow, talks to himself in class and sometimes says jokes that is not related to the class whatsoever and laughs alone. We also have never left on time, he always uses an extra 2-3 min. to continue explaining nonsense
Bo is a bad professor who will teach math as if he will teach language class. Math needs paper and a pen, but Bo was reviewing exams by reading past homework. No idea how he became a professor!
not a good professor, can not explain everything clear, the exam is very tough, if you can, never choose his class.
So he cannot explain a concept clearly. The examples done are too easy there needs to be tough and easy examples. He will re-write the same thing about four times per lecture.
First off if you have Bo Deng as a professor I would change as quick as possible. He offers a class with a large amount of barriers in respect to a student's learning. Our class average before the final was a 59%. Test problems are not on par with lectures. We ended up complaining to the Math department, who made Bo raise our grades by 10%. Notcool
Lecture has no relevance with actual textbook or test material, does not help students in any way outside of class
Do not take a class with this professor. He struggles with English and struggles with computers. He also can be very disrespectful to his students. My class was partially online and he could not figure out how to show his screen with resolution good enough to be legible. He is intentionally pedantic and condescending when a student corrects him
Switches with the format of the exams, never productively answers questions, doesn't have any intention of finding out why the fail rate is so high with his classes, will confidently and gladly just move on to more unrelated content, and never address possible issues with his teaching style
Bo is hard to understand and not just from his accent. The lectures are quite rambling and not strait to the point which makes learning processes hard. He is very clear and transparent with grading but does mot display overall grades throughout the semester. Many students get left behind and he is not helpful when it comes to office hours.
Honestly one of the worst professors I have had period. You can still be successful in the class by utilizing the MRC, recitation, and teaching yourself, but the lectures are nearly useless.
As someone who came into this course from taking precalculus from high school, He teaches the class like it's a review. He never explains any of the concepts, All the problems he does do in lecture rarely have anything to do with the homework or the tests. He's a nice guy, but if you want to succeed in this course, choose a different professor/
Lecture for this class was brutal. Bo teaches like you've already learned the material and this class is simply a review. In lecture he starts off each section by going over the hardest possible problem in the section then expects you to know that section by heart. He's a nice guy, just not a good teacher. 106 is impossible to fail however.
The worst teacher I've ever had. I had taken pre-calc in high school and that is honestly the only reason I knew what was going on. He taught the class as if it was a review. Lots of rambling and used examples in class that did not apply to the homework or exams. Save yourself and your grade and do not take his class if you can.
Do not take with this professor
He will work through an entire problem in one 50 minute class. When working thru problems, often will get them wrong. Random questions not covered in class will show up on the exam. Learns the homework the same day it's due.
Do not take this class with Bo if you can. He is a professor who seems like he knows what he is doing but lacks a teaching ability. He speaks in a broken english and can be hard to understand. Tests are almost nothing like the review and he seems unforgiving on grading. Save your grade and switch professors. He seems like a good man yet not teacher
Avoid Bo Deng at all costs possible. His lectures make no sense and leave you in the dark for homework. Tests are completely different from anything we learned. He gets mad if the tech doesn't work and blames and gets mad at IT support to their face in the most disrespectful way possible.
If you have the choice, do not take a course with Professor Deng. I was forced to practically teach myself the course material, as lectures did not cover what was on homework or exams. On top of that, two of four exams were hardly like the review material given. He seems like a very nice man, but he is incompetent when it comes to teaching.
I'm not even sure this guy knows how to teach a class. Attending lectures is useless because you'll walk out knowing less than you walked in with. Tests are nothing like the homework. Save yourself the stress and pain by finding a different professor.
Bad teacher
Do not take a class with Bo Deng. If you didn't take Calc in high school then you are cooked. Save yourself the tears and find a different professor because you could learn more from a brick wall than you could from him. If I had the choice to jump into shark infested waters or to take this class again, I would jump into the shark infested waters.
I felt discriminated against by him. In Exam 1, I answered a confusing question as "does not exist" and asked him for clarification, but he refused to help and was disrespectful. Later, he assisted a white student with the same question and fixed it right away, making me feel uncomfortable and unfairly treated.
Bo Deng is not a good lecturer he is very confusing on how he sets up equations and doesn't explain how he got places in the equations. He isn't very available to students. Recitation is where I have learned almost everything just to go into lecture and become lost once again.
Good guy, bad teacher
Very Difficult Class
One of the worst teachers I've had by far. Doesn't teach the theory and focuses purely on examples. Teaches the class as if it's a review, not people learning it for the first time. The only reason I managed to pass was because of my reciation TA. Would often understand the material, then go to lecture and walk out even more confused.
There are lots of negative comments on here about Professor Deng but I think most of them are uncalled for. Yes, his teaching style can be difficult to learn from at times but if you really apply yourself, this won't be too much of an obstacle. It's clear he is passionate about Calculus and wants to teach it, even if his methods make it difficult.
Felt I was taught better in the MRC then in his classroom.
As another commenter said I would avoid this class at all costs it really is learning from a brick wall He takes his syllabus directly from a different professor without changing a thing I've basically self taught myself all of calc 3 I would rather drop my degree before taking this class ever again
nice guy, bad professor. Avoid at all costs
Only class I'm going to fail my whole degree. Professor Deng knows his stuff, but it really is like talking to a brick wall. He simply can't teach from a students perspective. A review said that they walked out of the lecture more confused than before, and I 100% agree with that. He will leave you stranded if you can't keep up with his level. Avoid
Avoid him at all costs. You could 100% understand the homework, textbook, lectures (unlikely), and recitation, but be completely lost on the exams. They do not match up with anything you have learned at all. I do not know where he pulls them out of. Lectures are terrible and a waste of time, but you get points for going. DO NOT TAKE
He's a good person, but he makes the course x10 harder with his teaching.
I'm strong in math and have tutored calculus, but Bo Deng is the worst professor I've had at UNL. He's smart but a poor teacher— his tests are inconsistent, with material not covered. No matter how much you study, test will not reflect that. I learned more from YouTube and my TA than his class. Avoid him at all cost! Do not spend a dime on him.
Bo Deng was my 1st class at UNL. i thought i was going to learn things in lecture. He has completely destroyed my perception of higher education with the lack of learning in his lectures. Do not waste your time with his lectures. Learn calculus based off the people in the MRC & GPT with the homeworks. God help you.
Dr. Deng is a great guy and is funny but cannot teach for the life of him. His teaching strategy focuses on very niche theory and concepts and examples do not prepare you for the test. He does give plenty of review material though. For reference, this is my first math class in my life without an A.
Worst lectures I have ever sat through. My resi TA single-handedly saved me. Attendance is graded for both lectures and resi, tests are not curved. The course is not hard enough that you can not get a good grade even with Bo as your prof, but if you can take any other professor, take them instead.
Bo is a great dude and he is funny, but he is too smart to teach. I understood barely anything he said because he over explains every topic and makes it more complicated than it is.
Very difficult to understand and keep up with and doesn't respond to emails from my experience. Go with another teacher please
He is very passionate about the subject and this class. If you attend class regularly and get the homework done on time, you will get an A. This class is only offered every other fall just so everyone knows.
