He expects some hard work, but is really effective in teaching and is recommended for those who wish to TRULY learn. If you're effort is there you will earn an A.

He assigns a lot of work but you learn a lot too. He also has a C Guarantee for most of his classes as long as you do all the work.

His class isn't hard. There is work involved, but again, there is also a C-guarantee as long as you turn in all your work and you attend every lecture. His class was entertaining and informative. Highly recommended!

His stories about his life are interesting. I like how he related his stories with the class. If you're a good writer, you will get an A. He's the main guy for the writing proficiency test, so he knows his stuff.

English is my least liked subject, yet I actually enjoyed Eng102. His essays are pretty difficult, but he's very helpful if you're in a rut. Eng102 was the most challenging class I've taken, yet the most beneficial (and I'm a bio major!).

Still one of the best professors I've had at Cal State Long Beach. The class was always really lively and I learned writing techniques that have carried me through the last 3 years of college. He also made all of us take the WPE so I got that out of the way my freshmen year. Paper topics had nothing to with English but that dfeinately made it a lot more interesting in writing them.

Prof. Boak is a very knowledgeble, nice, and fun professor. He teaches you how to be a better writer, and he provides helpful techniques to strengthen your essay. If you want to pass your WPE, then you should take his class because he knows exactly how to pass that exam.

This was the best class I ever took at CSULB in Fall '03. I received a B in the class, and I have to tell you guys, Boak is the man. I think that everyone should at least take one of his courses when attending CSULB.

His class is fairly easy. If you're lazy, don't take it. He makes you work for your grade slightly, but information you learn in his class not only prepare you for writing future papers and the WPE, but prepare you for university and personal success. You do have to put in a little work, but its really really worth it! HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!!!

Full of bs. Dont belive what he says. Funny guy but a bold liar. He thinks he's some kind of super english teacher, that knows tons about psychology. Term papers non-stop. Topics are either phillophical or psychological. His grading is really awkward. Gives no one in class more than C on papers. I think he is trying to prove something by that.

He makes the class fun with his stories. There is at one point where he tells a story that takes 4 class days. But as long as you do the reading which isn't much (sometimes) you should be fine. He gives you a chance to redo a paper and he gives a C guaranty, when you show up 95% of the time and do all the work, which is cool.

Boak's one of those teachers that you don't know what the hell he is talking about, but then one day it all cliks. He is a genius professor and knows what he is talking about. Boak is really weird at times but he does reqire work and atendence is a must, but overall he is a good teacher!

He is soo cool and funny.. Super smart and knows what he's talking about. Very honest and friendly, he'll help you if you ask him. Not too much homework, good amounts of reading.. Goes by a "Guarantee C" scale, so you can't fail that class unless you never do homework and/or don't attend class. If you do everything, you'll get a C or better.

He's o.k. but tends to act very strange. He also gets upset if nobody laughs at his jokes or don't give him your full attention. Some days his personality can be tolerated, other days you just want to change the channel. Overall, he's alright but needs to be less insecure, and learn not to keep bragging about his expertise in the English languag

I can't understand why people would post bad comments about Boak. He's an awesome teacher & he really cares about the students. When he grades papers he writes sloppy and doesn't give grades on purpose so that you will go and talk to him. Attendance is MANDATORY. You'll get a C for coming everyday and if you don't... ummm good luck =p I think his grading is kinda hard, but the class is veryyy helpfull. Overall, good english class but grades wise not an easy A or B.

If you're not prepared to think, don't take his class. It took me until the last day to finally realize that. Challenge him passively--doing just that got me an A in the class (after getting C marks on all my previous essays). As a person, he can be annoying (he NEEDS some self-confidence), but as a professor, he is one of the best.

Professor Boak Ferris is commical, honest, and passionate about his subject-English. He is a wise man that truly has a lot of insight to offer in English writing. As long as you do the work and come to class, you should have no problem passing. He works for you; he works with you. I say take him.

Going to Boak's class is like going to a comedy show every day. He's very funny, witty, and extremely intelligent. Boak was one of my favorite teachers so far in college because he was extremely fair and actually made sense. His class is filled with interesting facts, stories, and a sense of fulfillment afterwards. RECOMMENDED, all you need to do is a couple essays and the final is sweet. Very informative and interesting. Tries to make everything have a 'real world' application and succeeds (at least as well as you can in a mythology class). Very interesting stories/lectures. You have to do the reading and cannot miss class however. I definitely recommend taking this class.

He is very intelligent, kind, and funny. The hardest part of his class are his essays, but that was because I was being lazy. The essays are not even hard. Why? This is not an easy one hundred level class that i was expecting. If you take him be ready to revamp the way you have been taught to write since grade school. This guy's instruction will open your eyes and your mind... he knows his stuff and will provoke thought! Ask him about GHOSTS.. yea, you heard me. Ask him! He has some crazy stories... and he appears to be actually telling the truth. Just ask him if believes in GHOSTS... and ask about his Friend "RAY" your hair will stand on the back of your neck.

I actually really enjoyed his class. At first I was a little intimidated by his teaching style and the fact that he obviously really knows what he's talking about, but you sort of get used to it after a while. His stories are ridiculous, and his teaching method is strange, but it works. I feel like I've improved immensely as a writer. Take him!

He is all about being fair & made a deal with the students that he will give them a C or higher if they attend exactly all of the lectures. soo you only do 3 essays, 1 quiz, 1 in class essay, & a final. and this guy actually motivated me to go to all of my professors office hours.

He is an excellent professor. His thoughts are well developed, and he openly accepts challenges to his reasoning, though he isn't open to accepting them. I learn something everyday in that class. Some are turned away because he is somewhat "different" than most professors, but I think that works to his advantage. Unique class, highly recommend it.

This man is a genius. Helped me pass the WPE my first try! Whether or not you pass the WPE he gives you a free english textbook that he wrote himself. Although he's definitely not an easy professor, an A is not impossible. Just make sure you USE all of his methods in ALL of your term papers & you'll earn it.

You hear lots and lots of stories from this guy. Class is mandatory and you get a lot of essays from him. All you have to do is attend, do all of the essays/ assignments based on what he taught you. I did everything, but not well and got a B.

Took ENG100 with him my freshman year and because of Boak I have gotten good grades on every essay I've written for every class since. Probably my most influential teacher of my college career because he actually taught useful, applicable writing techniques in a scientific way. Yes, he says some quirky stuff but that's what makes class interesting.

I took his class for eng 100. And let me tell you, i hated writing essays because im not good at them but this teacher really made me like writing essays. I earned a B in that class and i wasnt hoping to get a B but i did. so if i can get a B everyone else can too. and im also taking him for english 102. I cant wait. Trust me he is not hard at all

I graduated in 1995 and have recalled multiple times over the years concepts this guy taught for essays, using those crazy stories as examples. This is an interesting, engaging professor that wants people to get it by using way more interesting methods than many other teachers you'll have.

I really liked this professor. His stories are interesting and he uses them to help you learn. Some classes are boring you take a lot of notes but its an easy A. Don't need the textbook. Just write the essays how he teaches you to and vuala!

By far the best professor ever. The writing style he teaches in Engl 300 is incredibly useful in writing professional papers and letters. His stories are awesome! Teaches you how descriptive your writing should be. The more active the class is, the better he teaches. I guess that's a double-edged sword...

This was an easy class. Just follow the format he gives you for papers and show up to class. He tells stories and its an interesting class. Don't buy the textbook you won't use it. You are guaranteed a C from the beginning and you learn to write better. I highly recommend this professor.

B is awesome! His scale for grading is diff, so if you get a 77, you actually get a high B. Read and be involved and write the 2 papers and you'll do well. He is flexible with deadlines and always offers help. He NEVER tells you you're wrong. If you don't do well in this class, it's because you didn't show up!

Attendace is mandatory, but he is entertaining. Gives good feedback, but he is a tough grader. Gives great tips for the WPE, took the WPE with his tip and passed it! Fairly easy to get a B, but getting an A is nearly impossible. If you want an easy english class, this isn't the class for you. Boak will make you work and improve your skills.

He's definitely a strange one. He loves to talk about his mom most of the time. He gives you a clear explanation on how he wants his essays to be written. If you just tailor your writing style to what asks for then you can get an A. Also, if you bring him food, he'll give you extra credit? I never did it, but he said he would. Pretty easy class.

If you're looking for an easy A, do not take this class. Very easy B though. Lectures are pretty interesting and he has a lot of cool stories and facts to help you remember things. Take Boak if you want to become a better writer, he's tough but teaches well! As long as you follow directions and ask for help when needed, you can earn an A in his class. I am applying to medical school currently and without this class I can easily say my personal statement wouldn't be as good as it is now.

He is a strict grader on papers, but gives a lot of leeway on due dates so long as you have perfect attendance. A lot of reading and writing, not a lot of tests, and a few pop quizes

I took Mr. Ferris for ENGL 100, and I can say that he is an outstanding and funny professor. Although Boak grades strictly on term papers, by correctly following his beneficial analytical methods, you should earn at least earn a B per assignment. Lastly, he is extremely lenient on paper deadlines, so he wouldn't mind if papers were submitted late.

Boak is a very interesting person. His class is definitely not one of the easiest I've taken thus far. As long as you put effort into the class and he can see that, then you will pass the class. Boak is hilarious. There's 3 term papers, but a couple in class essays and tests. The term paper prompts were difficult for me because I'm best at analytical papers over I guess, "Fluff" papers. He also pushes due dates, so hes really lenient when turning in assignments. There was also a time he let class out early so he could go get lunch.

For the most part, I actually enjoyed professor Boaks class, caught off guard a couple times when asked to speak. Other than that, he really knows his stuff when it comes to composition. I went in the class thinking I knew everything there was about writing essays, I left realizing I make tons of mistakes. But he made me a better writer.

Tough prof and goes off on a lot of tangents that don't really make sense to what is going on in class. He randomly assigns essays back to back and grades them pretty hard. Must show up to class to know what he is looking for in the essay.

I love his teaching style. He gives amazing lectures and answers your questions without belittling you no matter what. The grading criteria isn't super clear but if you are focused on implementing the techniques he teaches and attend almost ever class, you'll get an A or B.

Study for the vocab quizzes and go to his office hours if you need help. This will help your grades. Just follow the writing steps he gives and you should pass. Take the WPE when you're in this class. If you miss class, bring proof of absence if you want it to be excused.

Easy A if you show up to class. 3 vocab quizzes, and 5 papers but 1 of those is a revision so really 4 papers. He's helpful. Kind of a kook but he is very helpful in terms of professional writing and I really improved my skills. I would take him again.

He has a more European approach to the class: you learn through the transfer of skills, not the ability to take a quiz or a test. This class was refreshing.

Professor Boak has very lenient deadlines when it comes to papers. They accumulate so dont wait until the last minute, and sometimes grading criteria can be confusing. If you ask him hes more than willing to help. Theres lots of reading to do, so plan ahead. You need one book (bit pricey). Prof. Ferris is very funny, no dull moment in his class.

Amazing professor! So helpful if you go to his office hours and you can tell he really cares about improving your writing in his lectures. I normally do not like English classes, but this class felt like a breeze. 5 term papers and 4 vocab quizzes. Show up to class everyday and he lets you turn papers in late like all the time. 10/10 recommend.

This was simultaneously an easy class and extremely difficult. My main complaint is that pretty much NONE of the lecture material is available online. He gave us 14 steps for a good essay, but the lecture spanned several days, making it difficult to follow, especially because he would confuse numbers. Didn't use beach board much, no grades posted.
