This teacher has a lot of personal problems, he knows his stuff but is very unhelpful, unclear and hard. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!
Had him for College Algebra, very hard, not very helpful. He feels that others did not prepare students for this level math and he is NOT going to help out. He would rather fail you than help you along. DO NOT TAKE!!! ANY OF HIS CLASSES!!!
know's the subject. pretty good at getting the students to understand the material. Very hard grader test are abit tricky. I prbably would not take him again.
If you are a math major, he is a very good teacher 'cause he is very picky as to procedure. If you can stand his "belittling" attitude, good to take. He has no patience for people that do NOT study. So, if you don't want to study, don't take hi
Bob Avila is the meanest teacher I have ever had in my life. He is very unclear in his teachings, has a poor attitude, and is extremly discouraging to every one of his students. If you wind up with him as a professor, get out as soon as you possibly can

He's a little hard on people, but he teaches very well! Explains how and why we solve a problem. Good examples. Asnwers your questions. Do you homework, it will help you for the test. He also lets you retake one test.
Extremely hard class, but if you work hard, he is willing to work with you. His style is clear, it's the material that is hard!
Bob is very tough, but one of the best teachers around, if you're not a crybaby.
After getting A's on most of my homework in this class, I could never get an A on the tests. Tutors that go over the tests with me ask me, "Why did you get that wrong?" This is frustrating to me that he would mark my answers wrong and tutors couldn't figure out why. Most of this class is failing. I would never reccomend this teacher to anyone.
Hardcore teacher. Literally. Homework was easy, tests were a pain. My fault for falling asleep in class and not paying attention. If I kept up with him, I would have passed with flying colors. Teacher knew everything like it was the back of his..nose.
Bob can be difficult, but all MATH majors should take at least half of their classes from him.
HORRIBLE!!! I would highly recommend not taking him even if it's your only choice (JUST LIKE MY SCENERIO). He's hardcore on homework and tests. YOU WILL NOT GET AN A OR a B, maybe a C. He started with approximately 40 students and ended up with 8. Those who say he's good were probably the girls who flirted their way out. Good luck if you take him!!
needs to review things he teaches before testing..very dissapointed
He's tough, but he is very clear and very helpful. If you're actually intrested in learning, take a class with him. If you're just trying to cruise thru college without actually learning anything, find somebody else.
Very thorough teacher. Not recommended for slackers.

He teaches the concepts well. You can really remember them and apply them.

He's one of the best Instructors at the school, he's dedicated to teaching, and has very very tough standards, If you don't want to be challenged, don't take his classes, but if you do and let him teach you, you will learn alot!

I took this class because i wanted to, after taking Calculus. Bob and I got into debates over how best to solve problems all the time. He is hands down the best math teacher on campus if you want to learn. Not for the faint of heart, ALL math majors should take his classes.
So far, he's alright but he is sooooo boring! He reminds me of that guy that does the commercial for Visine! He talks like that. Another thing about him is that he would make jokes that are not even funny...its just plain dry!
he is by far the worst teacher ever... he sounds like he is about to die .the way he clears his throat every two seconds.
He fails over 3/4 of the class every semester
he is rude and teaches unclair examples. the first test we had out of 34 students, only 13 actually passed with a C
he is a horrible teacher!!!
avoid him
Do not take him! The students that took him know why because he is rude and annoying! When he is doing a lecture or homework problem on the board, he says out loud "WHAT!" and continues until someone answers him. He gives a lot of homework and only collects 3 out of how many sections! He NEVER lets class out early and ALWAYS goes over time limit!
i was late once and he held it against me for the rest of the classes. He didn't help me when i ask and would never make an office appointment with me to talk.i loved math and he ruined that for the whole semester!
I used to like math until this semester. I have had nothing but trouble since being in his class. He needs to leave teaching period!
i like him... very helpful!
He was very very boring! And hard! He tells you to do all the math and then you only turn in three assignments! Very stressful. He looks like Uncle Ricco (not thats its relevant, but it kept me entertained) me and my sister both took him and could not get it
This semster will this teacher has been a total waste. I have studied so hard and still barely passing and he admits that he doesn't care. He deserves to be fired and in the unemployment line.
Bob Avila is THE WORST professor at MSJC. He flat out told me I was stupid for asking a simple question. He is a complete jerk with no regard for anyone's feelings. I turned him into the dean of instruction, he is still here, what do you have to do in order to get someone who's blatent disregard for anyone's feelings or success in this class out??
i think he is a really good teacher. i love him. he may move around a lot. he can't seem to sit still. he always seemed to look out the door, like he can't really consentrate. it was funny. lol.
STAY FAR AWAY!!! Took his class because his name sounded "American" (looking for no tough accent) I've always loved and been vary good at math--until now. He's my first F, and I have to take the course again over summer. :0/

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible. I can't emphasize enough avoiding this teacher at all cost. Take Razavi. She is amazing and this guy is a schmuck.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had.During the middle of the sem. he announced that over 75% of the class was failing, and we were impossible to teach! He's very full of himself and believes that if everyone had taken him from the begining we would all be exclnt math students. He doesnt answer "Stupid" questions very unhelpful.Do not take him!
This is guy is horrible. He acted like an idiot when most of class failed his impossible tests. As someone posted earlier, take Razavi, she is much better than this guy. He needs to take his 18 years of teaching and stick it or simply leave.
If on his bad side, he may make fun of you in an educational way. Great instructor that knows his work.
I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE THINK THIS GUY IS SO BAD! i knew bob's class would be difficult but this ended up being the best math class i took. if your not good at test taking, consider someone else b/c ur grade is based on that alone. hes an interesting person that gets ur brain thinking. if ur up for a challenge and want to learn, take him!
I guess the last poster had a good experience which is very unusual. This guy is just a total jack***! My end result of his teaching is that I hated Math. Math was my best subject before him. He deserves to be flipping burgers at McDonalds, NOT TEACHING!
this teacher doesn't know how to teach. if you ask him question he will make fun at you. he thinks that you know everything before u come to his class. this guy need to know if knew everthing i wouldn't take his class. it is up to you if u can study by ur self then this is the teaching for you.
He was the most negative teacher i've ever met. the day before i dropped his class he told everyone I dont know why you all are still sitting here taking my class u r going to fail. I was afraid to ask him any questions because he makes everyones question seem stupid. half the time he wont even answer the question just make u look like an idiot.
I took his class in the spring and bombed it!! He is great in math, and loves it, but he is not a good teacher of math. If you understand math....it would probably be fun for you. But if you don't understand it....don't take him. Or you will be taking it again in the summer like I did!!
This teacher is the worst! He is really boring and makes stupid little jokes all the time. He is such a jerk to. He always says that we "shouldn't know something". implying that we are stupid! Also most of the people in my class (like me) just got out of H.S. They know this stuff, they just forgot! So if you get the chance do not take him!
I cannot believe this guy is still teaching. He looks so old with his new look beard. He was the worst teacher. He deserves to get fired because his only pleasure is to fail students. Avoid him at all cost. Even if you needed this class for a require, just go to another campus if you have to. This person is awful!

He is HORRIBLE... DO NOT TAKE HIM. I got a C in his class and I got an A in Math 110!!! He is a horrible teacher with a monotone voice and he is always late.
This teacher is not horrible like evryone else says...he comes off as being tough because of his attitude. If you do your work and know what you are doing you'll do fine in his class, its just up to you to do all your work, and he's there to help all the time. The class is based on ur tests, there no collection of hw, so you have to do good to pass
The last one to comment was an exception to the rule for rating this egotistic idiot and fool. Bob needs to quit teaching and retire to an old folks home, he looks so old with his new look beard. He is not helpful at all, he doesn't like to follow the textbook, he likes to throw pens across the room almost hitting students with them, a huge loser!
I am a Pre-Med student this class was very difficult and the instructor was not very prepared, knowledgable or easy to work with. Out of the original 24 students enrolled I was one of the 4 that passed. I do not recomend him for this class. the only benifit will be a bunch of memorized equations you will never use.
HE IS NOT THAT GREAT OF A TEACHER.HE ASSUMES THAT THE STUDENTS SHOULD ALREADY KNOW WHAT HE IS TEACHING AND IF THEY ASK A QUESTION HE BELITTLES THEM AND ASKS "HOW DO YOU NOT GET IT?" HE TRYS TO GIVE A LOT OF LIFE LESSONS THAT HE THINKS ARE IMPORTANT BUT ARE ABSOLUTELY IRRELEVANT.IF YOU ARE NOT A MATH PERSON HE IS NOT THE PERSON TO TAKE THEN!
I must say this teacher is absolutely horrible. i have never dropped a class. and because of his pickyness and anal self, i failed my tests i had to drop. STAY AWAY FROM BOB AVILA (a big jerk to boot!)
He has a very dry sense of humor.. but NOT worth aking his class! He makes the students feel like they are dumb and they should "know" what he is taking about. He is super hard and i thought i could get through it but i ended up dropping it before the 3rd test. He doesnt collect homework.. all he grades you on is the tests. Worst decision i ever ma
Great Professor. He knows his stuff and explains things well. Most people don't like him because he is hard and expects a lot from you as a student, which is good because that is the point of school. He gives like a million examples of everything that he teaches that day, and will make sure he gives an example of each homework problem so you know t
Never take him for anything..He said he only passed four people for math 105 when I was in his class.
Knows exactly what he's talking about as far as math goes (lives and breathes it). However he crams way too much information into the two hour class period and treats students like middle school kids. Don't be rude Bob, treat adults like adults!
I took bob for Math 105 in fall 2006. He is the meanest teacher ever.. almost every student got an F an the first test and when he was kind of going over the test he called us all stupid and that we all belong back in math 96. I finally dropped the class. NEVER EVER TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES.
By far the worse teacher. Smart guy but bad teacher. He gives relentless tests.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER TAKE HIM! Hes is rediculousl hard and very rude. He makes his students feel stupid every chance he gets. yeah he has a dry sense of humor and can get you to laugh a couple times.. but he is evil! If you want to fail.. take his class!
Extremely good teacher but also extremely hard
All the comments are true. He is exceptionally hard, expects the best from his students and is completly unapproachable. Having said that, he does know his material inside out. I got an A but only because I put the hours in. Don't take him if 096 is your last math class.
Not a Good proffesor, rude annoying dry humor, belittles you for asking questions, He is always late but if you are late he will never let it go. DONT TAKE BOB AVILLA
I am a straight A student at MSJC-a member of the honors program, a member of Phi Theta Capa ect..--until i took Bob Avila, the tyrant whom i quote "doesn't care if u get an F". He actually explains excitedly at the beginning of class that he expects 85% of his students to fail. I am highly dissapointed in MSJC for refusing to do anything.
If some one thinks i have ground for a lawsuit please let me know. Some one has to do something about this man. After all the hard work and MONEY i have put into MSJC they don't seem to see a problem with my GPA dropping from a 3.8 to a 3.1 after his class, and going from good grades in math to Fs. It's more than just Fs, it's..emmotional damage.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had . He is rude, mean, has a horrible teaching style, and absolutely does not care about students. He gives a speech about how he expects you to fail, and it makes no difference to him since he has tenure. This guy makes students feel bad for asking questions and is impossible to contact for any outside help.
He actually told my class that they were idiots. He honestly does not care about his students. His teaching methods are awful too.
Teaching ability was little to non existent. He simply could not explain his method clearly. I took class with other professor and finally understood what i was doing. Sadly i still did not pass do to medical situations but i at least knew that i understood it.
he is a horrible teacher..doesnt care about his students and is very rude to them. He has no repect for his students, i dont even kno why he is still teaching. He always seemed miserable as if he didnt want to be there
Took 212H w/ him about 4 years ago and came across his rating here just now. If you want to get your degree in math/physics/cs, take his classes--better prepare you for a University. If you don't, avoid him like the plague. Pretty simple, if it's in the textbook, you should know it--so don't be a crybaby.
such and stop telling lower level math classes that they r "stupid", "will never get better than a C in math", or that they "should never have passed math before.", or that "he doesnt care if they have good grades or not". If he hates “stupid” people so much then why is he posing as some 1 who desires to share his knowledge with others and teach.
U also mentioned that you took 212H with him which is a very high level math class, I signed up in math 096 which is a beginning level class. Most students sign up for classes to be taught not disrespected, regardless of what your major is. If Bob Avila wants to be known as a math majors only instructor then he should announce himself as such &
"math majors" instructor, well that's great that you think so. But unfortunately 4 you, the majority of students in his classes are probably not math majors. As a fellow Honors student, I am disappointed in your lack of compassion upon your fellow students who may not be as inclined in math as you are-or may have not reached your level quite yet.
To the one who made the previous comment. You mentioned that this guy was a great 4
Eh, it was an ok class. a third of the class already dropped out. Don't know what I'm getting yet tho. Good teacher, very enthusiastic, just rude most of the time. If you know stuff and want to learn more, take him, but if you dont know much or dont like rude teachers, he isn't the teacher for you. If you study well, you won't hvae to worry much.
Bob is a great teacher if you're really good at math. His tests are really hard, but do-able if you're a hard worker. I love his teaching methods. He always appreciates those students who work hard and come to every class. Everyone who rights negative things about him is just mad because they we're not smart enough to be in his math class.
Avila is THE WORST professor at MSJC. he is a horrible teacher..doesnt care about his students and is very rude to them. He has no repect for his students, i dont even kno why he is still teaching. He always seemed miserable as if he didnt want to be there
If you're going into a field where you need math, take Bob,you'll learn the material or else...Definately knows math,I would say he's brilliant, but he is a typical math teacher, doesn't understand how a person might not get math.Absolutely the hardest B I ever got.I had to hire a tutor. That being said,I'm more proud of that B than all my A's
I LOVE THIS TEACHER!! Hes sooo helpful and he loves what he is doing. I would take him again for his other classes, but I passed with an A so I dont need to. I highly recommend this teacher to anyone who wants an easy A with a great guy! NO TESTS!!!!
One of the worst teachers at that school (school I would not recommend anyways. It seems that he has a quota on failing students. AVOID HIM!!
Bob is a very good teacher if you want to learn. He demands a lot from his students, but if you do your homework and attend class, you will do well. He explains math very well and it is very important to him that you understand the concepts instead of just memorizing the steps. He is by far the best math teacher I have ever had!
Very arrogant. Gets offended when asked a question. He likes to drop students as he seems happy when most of them leave. Do not recommend at all.

Teaches everything in detail. He's a good teacher if your going to need to understand algebra for your career. This class was just for credits & was extremely hard & the homework is lengthy. I don't dig puzzles aka math :/
First class, he said if we couldnt keep up to go back to math 90, which i never took and tested into math 96, then consistantly not understanding why we as a class would not get the material, and kept referencing to go to a lower class everytime we got lost. Dont Recommend
HORRBLE TEACHER!! i couldnt wait to get out of class and he didnt want any questions at all!...teaches everything in details and hated to explain anything again!
By far the worst professor I have ever had. If you dont get it...your problem...definitely avoid him
He is a good teacher, but very hard. He gives quizes every class. Grades very hard, and gives alot of homework.I do not suggest anyone take him unless you have to.
by far my least favorite teacher at msjc. he honestly made me feel like i was wasting his time when i asked questions or wanted a little extra help. i always felt like i was behind and had no idea what we were learning and i never felt like i grasped the previous lesson. i ended up dropping because he bases your entire grade on tests, i failed two.
Very tough grader. Teaches to prepare for higher math. If this is your only math, don't take him. Very difficult class.
This teacher is terrible! Every student dropped this class. He started the coarse saying "I only teach pre cal once every five years because everyone does so terribly." Well this is because he is a bad teacher. He gets offended and treats everyone like they are stupid. He also cant hear to make the whole asking questions and responding thing a pain
Worst teacher hands down i have ever had. I am a math major and quite good at it and failed miserably. He can not teach math and shouldnt be teaching at any school. if u dont want to teach yourself and TRY to pass the tests there is no point going into this class. Most frustrating thing ever.
avila was the worst teacher i have ever had. he made me feel stupid for asking questions and refuse to answer them and would yell at the class room if people were having difficulties undertsanding any of the concepts. i had only ten minutes before my next class qould start and he would hold the class ten minutes over every time. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
I consider myself bright and great at math, and therefore am lucky because I had to teach myself this class...This man not only should not be teaching, but I am questioning his purpose of being alive. Never have I met a person as rude and unwilling to even answer simple questions without adding an insult..he should have been a DMV employee...
stupid jokes
nedds to update teaching methods, math problem ahve to be exact even if the answer is correct..stupid!
He teaches lessons HIS WAY. He follows the text book, but goes in his own order and jumps all around because thats how he likes it. If you don't do a problem the way he taught you, you get marked down. Even if thats how a tutor showed you how. It's hard to get tutor help in his class because he is so specific.
If your into math and want to test your skills take his class.
Steer clear. Unless you feel like making math your life for a semester, and having test questions 10x harder than ANYTHING in the homework. If that fits you, go for it.
Extreamly difficult tests! Sometimes put material on there he didn't prepare you for at all. Never collects homework. Has a pathetic sense of humor and thinks he knows everything in the world. Probably the worst math teacher ive ever had, and that says a lot!
Terrific teacher. Lectures in a way that is very easy to understand and pertinent to the homework assigned. All the questions on the tests are culled from the homework, so doing homework is required to do well in the class. Gives a lot of extra credit.
Taught in his own way, confusing at times. I felt like i pratically had to teach myself the course. Ended up having to take the course again :P
This guy is a pretty hard teacher. He yells randomly during lectures i don't know why. There is no homework to be turned in, it's all tests. To past this class do all the homework and show up to every class. I wouldn't recommend this teacher. He's hard to understand and the tests are made up by him. Tests take up the whole class period maybe more.
Very Hard! He wants EVERYTHING done his way....
If you are the type of student who asks questions when you need clafification-Forget it! He makes you feel stupid if you ask a question. Wants things done HIS way ONLY. If you don't solve a problem the way HE says you need to do it, he'll dock points..EVEN if you get the right answer! Terrible Terrible Teacher..Obviously hates teaching
worst teacher ever. i found him to be very difficult to understand and when a student asks a question his responses make you feel dumb. i dropped his class after a few weeks. He will only teach you his way and if you dont understand that way then you are screwed.
Does not have good teacher characteristics. He will make sure you regret asking a question or need clarification on a problem..He'll make you feel "stupid" in front of the entire class
I think this guy is good at what he does, but he is not a real people-person. I found him to be quite demeaning and rude at times, and he can definitely make you feel stupid. He hands back graded tests in the order of your grade from best to worst. It's rather embarrassing to be last. :-(
dont do it. i warn you.
Unless you absolutely LOVE having questions on your test that are 5x harder than anything in the homework, do not take his class.
he is the worst!!! horrible in every way, does not help understanding the material one bit so do not even think about asking a question because he'll make you feel like an idiot, his test are near impossible nothing like the homework or study guide, and he is the self proclaimed hardest teacher at msjc STAY AWAY!!! or most likely you will fail
If you don't want to do the work Mr. Avila can be really hard but if you put the effort in he is a good teacher and knows what he is talking about.
worst experience ever. This guy is so confusing and likes to yell and make people look stupid. He needs to change his teaching style because over half the class dropped after the second test. Take another teacher the math itself is simple but this teacher is awful!
Told myself I would never take his class after math 90. Unfortunately he was the only teacher available for my time and I was forced to take him for 105. I hate the class honestly. He always gives us a crapload of homework and doesn't grade it but he gets mad if we don't do it. We get study guides but they are easy compared to test. DONT TAKE!
the teacher is very dull, strict picky and hard to comprehend. Don't take any class with him.
Took him for 96 and it was not that bad. Now for math 105 it is awful. He never can fit everything he wants to do so he starts rushing through it and nobody understands the material. Then everyone fails and drops out and he continues to go at his own pace without caring about us. When he falls behind...everyone perishes.
Bob is the worst teacher I have ever had. He intimates students and is rude. He himself said in class that he "isn't a nice person". Unless your a brain i wouldn't suggest his class, he expects you to know the material before he actually teaches. WORST TEACHER EVER!!!
unfortunately i took this teacher without warning.. a word of advice, its all within the student. if math isn't your specialty then simply don't take this teacher. you can basically read the book, than listen to this guy rant all the time. his tests are difficult only because he's SPECIFIC on the steps.
bob is a super strict teacher but he knows what hes talking about.. hell punk people out for being late because he says being late is disruptive. the only one disrupting the class is him when he rants about it.it makes me laugh though because he gets so mad while hes teaching.
He is extremely intelligent with what he teaches. Yet very difficult to keep up with. He is very fast pace. Very challenging. He, unfortunately, is very rude. He will, like others have already mentioned, make you feel dumb as a rock. However, he will praise you when you get his questions right. And very so often, his questions are very simple.
WORST math teacher i have ever taken! If math does not come easy to you, do not take this teacher. He is rude and he rants on and on. Also, we always get out of class late! A warning: DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
All I can say is, your grade DEPENDS on your test scores. If you fail the first three, your done. I just failed my third test and he told me flat out, "Looks like you're taking this class again." It's not that I don't understand the material, it's how he's teaching it to us that confuses me a lot. If you can't handle this, don't take him!!
He is very smart and likes to let you know how smart he is and how unsmart you are! Setting that aside, his main goal is to make sure you know math. If you put in the effort, he will match it. But is is one of the most hardest teachers I have taken
Math is my worst subject. Bob really helped me understand the it by getting me involved in class and following up on questions. Like anything else in life, if you put in the work you will see the results! Only take this class if you intend to learn, not as a filler. He doesn't tollerate tardiness for any reason, but his classes usually run late.
Bob is a comedian. It was pure comedy for me in his class. This one kid was a minute late and he stopped him while walking to his desk by yelling "YOU'RE LATE" and made the kid state his full name. That kid ended up getting a D, while I managed to salvage myself by immediately switching teachers when Bob told me i'd never be able to catch up.
DO NOT!! I SAY, DO NOT TAKE THIS INSTRUCTOR! He takes a simple math and makes it hard. Its his way all the way or the entire problem is wrong. He told us he has OCD issues and it needs to be perfect. Even when you are right he finds a way to make it wrong. DO NOT TAKE!
This teacher is not too bad. Homework is not collected but do it! We only had 6 tests, that is all. No extra points ever. I would not take him for a higher class then 96.
You can see that his passion is math. I think he has a hard time understanding students. He is funny but strict. I wouldn't recommend him to someone who struggles with math.
If you take his class, you have to really put a lot of effort into it. His tests are really hard and he's very picky on grading them, he wants all the math done the his way. If you show up to every class and put in a lot of effort, you should pass his class.
Mr. Avila warns you the very first day that he is the hardest teacher at MSJC. He isn't lying. The homework's fine but his tests were killers. I did every hw (he doesn't collect it) & studied w/ tutors 2X a week & still my scores declined w/ each test. entire grade is based on 5 tests. no participation or hw points. I got a B but most people failed
he is a bad teacher. he only looks at one side of the room and does not make eye contact with the rest of the students. he mumbles and is not very helpful. but if you do the homework you will get a good grade on the test. you have to teach yourself.
Bob is an intense, passionate, misunderstood professor. If you're late you WILL be publicly ridiculed. But even his outbursts hid a very dry, dark sense of humor. He is the BEST math teacher I've ever had at explaining the material. It blows me away that he doesn't have a 5.0 rating for clarity.DON'T MISS CLASSES,TAKE GOOD NOTES,DON'T BE LATE = A
The teacher uses the textbook all the time. You get no credit for homework! The only thing that counts for your grade is your test scores so be sure to get good grades on it. You take about 5 or 6 tests a semester.
You learn why math is the way it is. He's really cheesy but explains things very well. No required homework. The tests aren't hard but he is picky with the way he wants his answers. All math is hard but he makes it understandable. Recommend!
He was an amazing teacher. He was blunt from the beginning, If you do not do the homework you will not have a good grade. People are just lazy in his class and blame him because he does not force students to do homework. If you want a teacher that won't just pass you but will actually teach you, take his class.
I liked the teacher and the class, but i was very upset with my grade. I had taken this class the previous year in highschool and got A's both semesters. I got placed in pre calculus again so I took his class. I thought I'd get a really good grade but I guess I barely passed. He didn't collect or grade homework. Your grade was based on only 4 tests
Great Teacher! He's passionate about what he does and does well on clarity. If you not really good at math and have a hard time understanding it, I would highly recommended taking his course. You couldn't possibly ask for a better teacher! His overall mission is not for you to simply pass the class but to really understand the material as he does.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER FOR MATH 110. Majority of people in that class end up taking the other math 110 teacher the next semester. Save yourself the trouble, not worth it.
uses homework to give weekly quizzes, test questions are harder than anything you will do on homework, his handwriting is not legible and he talks fast, make sure you study the topic before lecture or you will be lost, majority of the class failed,
He's terrible. Almost the entire class failed. Tests are ridiculously hard and nothing like the homework. Gives weekly quizzes based on the homework but does not collect homework. Grade based on 4 tests, quizzes, and final. Hes a bad teacher and gets frustrated easily. Only good thing is that the quizzes are easy if you do homework and he has jokes
Talks super fast and talks to himself more than to the class. Tests are very hard and not like the homework, gives weekly quizzes. Doesn't collect homework but you need to do it to have any kind of understanding of what is going on. Only very few even passed. hard class and unhelpful teacher
Bob rocks. He is very enigmatic and enthusiastic. He is brilliant and can easily be called the smartest man I have met. He also is a chess grand master. Take his class if you want a virtuoso as an instructor.
Mr. Avila knows his math but does not explain it clearly. I had experiences of him being condescending on me and other classmates when ever we had a question on a problem. He's very strict on exams and the exams are the majority of the grade. I went to tutoring every day and still did not understand Mr. Avila's way of teaching.
Best professor I've had so far. He explains concepts in a way that just make sense. Things I've never understood are clear as day when he explains them. Very happy to be in his class.
Horrible teacher. Probably passed only 3-5 students when I took his precalc class. Grade based on exams and his exams are fairly hard (strict grader). I hated this class. Save yourself time and don't take his class.
He doesn't explain things well. If you ask questions he makes a fool out of you in class. He called someone stupid for not being able to understand his hand writing.
Bob Avila is a very strange man and almost always seems angry, but is an effective instructor if you test well. Take REALLY good notes and you should be fine. Keep up on the homework; at least do a few problems from each assignment. Do that and the tests should be good for you, since he rarely picks complicated problems. Very punny as well.
go to class every day, pay attention, and take good notes. he is condescending sometimes and very picky on answers, but he also has a sense of humor. if you do the homework, you will pass the class. there are 10 quizzes, and 5 tests (including the final). each test has 10-12 sections on it, except for the final which had 17.
I dont know why many students dont like Bob. He is a good prof. he has office hours if you need help. Test were challenging but not impossible. weekly quizzes were ez, copy straight from hw. Class was challenging but fun. 4 test - drop lowest, 10 quizzes, and a final. final is based on those 4 tests. 3/4 dropped cuz they dont usually show up. gg.
This class is not easy. Math used to be my favorite subject this class made me hate it. He passes 2/5 students, he embarrasses you in front the class. And A+ students pass his class with a C- I don't recommend him.
He loves so much that he likes to explain the logic behind it. He uses the textbook but uses his own method. The way he teaches you is that you get it in the class but forget everything when you get home and you cant refer back to your book because his methods are different
As long as you show up to class everyday, do the hw and write everything he has written on the board, you'll pass his class. He's not the best teacher but he's not that bad either. you take 10 quizzes but you can use notes. 4 test and a final but make sure you study very well because they are not easy. Goodluck! :)
Bob is a comedian and very smart! He knows math in and out!!! He is a VERY GOOD professor. The best for serious students who need to be challenged and especially math major he's a MUST! Quite a HARD class, and you need to do homework if you want to make it. Quizzes can be a breeze but tests are challenging and tricky, really HARD!
Well I never missed one day of class, hell or high water I was there. I did my homework, and I did not pass. He allows you to use your homework for quizzes, but the tests are hard and he is confusing. I do not recommend him he is so not on our level, we are at the bottom and he is high on the pedestal. Do not take him!!!!!!!!!!
He's an excellent professor, who knows his math. Very passionate and teaches logic behind the math. Quizzes can be copied out of homework, tests very hard, so study HARD. Not an easy class but you can learn a lot. He's teaching style goes above standard level. Very passionately animated character which makes class interesting!
If you are not interested in math, I would not suggest taking his class. He is very passionate about math and if you are not, you will probably despise him. Although I failed the class, I loved that he loved math and had a very unique way of teaching it. All grades are based on tests and quizzes only- homework is not graded.
He was not helpful, even though you give your best. He will not encourage you, but discourage if he doesn't like you.I did all I can to pass and learned a lot from his class, but again we were not connecting that discrimination maybe a factor.
Very passionate about math, but man it really is his way or the highway. We all pretty much failed our first quiz because our work, yes our work, not the answers, weren't done "his" way. Example? You get an answer wrong if it is in interval notation and not set-builder. I honestly wish I would have looked at this site before. Do not take!!
Bob is a genius. He does at times sound annoyed when you ask a question, but you can't take it to heart. He answers virtually every question like that so its nothing personal. On the other hand, he makes you understand it rather than just tell you what to do. Only reason his rating is low is because it isn't an easy A. Best professor I've had.
Ill admit he's a excellent math teach i will give him that. But i recommend if you taking a Math 96 course do not take his class. He treats students like that they can't do anything. Homework is straight from the book and only does question once every Monday or sometimes Wednsdays. Quizzes is based from the homework and test are tough
Terrible teacher. His lectures are long and boring. He lectures in a monotone kind of way and he has very sloppy hand writing. Wanna take notes? You will give up trying after a few examples. He erases things and writes all over the place. Take my word and find a different professor. On the plus side, he does not care if you attend class.
I have always struggled with Math and it didn't help that Avila was monotone, messy, rude and didn't care about his students. I was only able to pass by getting tutored in the LRC before every class.
attended every single class, not for attendance but to learn every single section in detail. it is very difficult but if you put in the effort and study w tutors in the lrc theres a chance. he grades tests extremely hard, like no chance of passing; quizzes are straight from the homework but you only get 10min to do 3q's. he yells &is intimidating.
Definitely not for everybody. Only about 7 students remained by the end of the semester. Look to use online sources because some concepts may go over your head and you'll fall behind quickly. Only take if you have a pretty solid take on precalculus.
By far the toughest class I have taken so far and actually changed from majoring in economics because of his class. I received a D because he is just so difficult to follow, such a tough grader, and just a rude person. I know I should've gotten at least a B if I had any other professor. Just save your self the frustration and don't take his class.
He knows his stuff, and expects you to know your stuff. If you are planning on majoring in math, take him. He will provide you with the proper knowledge to move forward.
If you are majoring on math, then you should take his class. If you don't know your stuff, do not take his class because it is hard to catch up. Quizzes are easy A's as long as you do your homework, which isn't required to be done. Tests are tough, but if you're doing the steps correctly he will give you credit.
I honestly do not know who made these prior untruth math 211 comment, but I know a few students are sucking up for grades, LOL. If one is majoring in math this is not the class for one; in is math 211 class he was never prepared most classes. Overall Mr. Avila teaches to cut class size and lighten his work load, know his stuff but he is lazy.
Bob is seriously AMAZING!!! If you work hard, do the homework, and go during office hours for help, you will be fine. He is very fair and understanding, but he does not like lazy students. If you are majoring in math he is the perfect teacher because he makes sure you know everything you need to. Overall, Bob is an awesome person and teacher!
Best math teacher I've ever had. Math is not easy, but Bob explains it in a very clear manner. If you do your homework and ask him questions (btw he will never turn them down), you will be fine. He is also very passionate about the subject he teaches. So sad can't take him again (I cried and ate ice-cream on the couch after the final :'c )
Passionate about math and takes the time to make sure you understand the concepts taught. Does expect you to grasp the concepts taught and be able to prove it on a test. Not an easy A, but if you put in the work you should be putting in for the class, you'll get there.
Do your homework!!! It's is essential for quizzes, which are really easy and straight from the homework, which you're allowed to use. Tests aren't that bad as long as you study. He takes his time to explain why something is done a certain way, and goes over any kind of question that's assigned for the homework. He's a bit speedy though, so beware.
Honestly, he's not that bad. I'm very surprised with the amount of hate he gets. If you actually try, you'll do fine. If I hadn't skipped a few classes I would have a better grade. His HW isn't mandatory, but it best that you do at least enough so you can be ready for his tests. If you get a kick out of dad jokes, you'll find him hilarious.
He's a great teacher and explains the concept behind the mathematics. A lot of people just want an easy pass but Bob will make you work for it but the odds are, if you're this far into math, you're probably in a major that is going to require this level of math. Just do the homework and you'll be fine. Ask questions and he's happy to answer them.
