Speech is not what I would call a fun class - Bob made the class fun, which made learning the information enjoyable. If you have the opportunity, choose this instructor!

He thinks things are all either "good" or "excelent" but then when he grades your stuff he makes comments taht make you even wonder if he read your paper. He never stops talking about Madison. All class it was all Madison this... Madis
easy class, Bob made seech class the fun class you always showed up to. Lot to learn from this guy.
Very vague, not clearly communicating what you need to do. He can't remember if he lectured about something or not. His night class was totally disorganized.
Kind of vague in communicating, but is still interested in sharing opinions.
very openminded and good teacher, he is very smart and explains very clearly what he's expects out of his students.Excellent Teacher!good sense of humor too! interesting.
Bob is detail oriented and willing to learn from students. I am thankful for having the opportunity to have taken his course.

He was great before he went to Madison apparently. I had him in 2001 and I thought he was excellent... too bad something happened to him in Madison, sorry students.
This guy is awesome! He is very open minded and has lots of interest in hearing open discussion in class. He made class very fun and I loved his sense of humor. He's also very inspiring. He opens your thought process. Since SPH 131 is required... try your hardest to take him!
He writes very disorganized notes on the board. He's a tough grader on your speeches as well as his tests. I think that out of the other speech teachers, he's probably the best choice. But his grading is still very frustrating.
Very unorganized and unclear as to what he expects.Hard grader on speeches and his test! seems chovinistic. Your better off taking Thiesen for speech, easy "A".
I thought Bob was great! He was very helpful with ideas for improving speeches/papers. He was always willing to help out. A great teacher! Interesting class discussions.
Very nice and very passionate! Open minded and critical thinker, tries to get the class engaged. Makes the course interesting and a supportive atmosphere. This isn't a flaw, but he will greatly deduct from your speech grade if you don't follow his requirements (lacking a thesis, conclusion etc) so keep your speeches organized and you'll be ok.
One of the best teachers I have ever had!!! I was afraid of taking this class in the past, but he made it so easy. He was also able to take my fear from public speaking away. Just show up for every class, listen to what he has to say, and you will do great. He is also willing to learn from his students, so don't hesitate to be active in the class.
He is a great teacher. He really helped me out, and was actually interested in what I had to say.
He is such a great teacher! I really have enjoyed his class! He will help many to be a great speaker!!
He is nice until you get on his bad side. He will make it very known that he does not like you but it is an easy A if you take his class. His lectures are interesting but his assignments are generally boring and he does not explain them clear enough AND DO NOT PARTICIPATE TO MUCH because he will rudely embarass you in front of the whole class!
He is a good teacher but a little unclear and kind of boring. He has major temper issues though
It is a sad day when an interpersonal communications teacher can not even interpersonally communicate
Betts was such a great teacher, honestly my favorite teacher ever. He keeps his class extremely interesting. I had him on T/TH and his class flew by way faster than any of my MWF classes. I would recommend him to anyone!
Interesting, open-minded and an excellent communicator. Good sense of humor and is willing to listen to class members. He takes class, homework and speaking very seriously, so show up, do your work and be prepared. He expects your best effort -as he should. I enjoyed him enough to take another class with him.
Not objective at all when it came to grades. Does not like his ideas/ideals confronted and takes it out on students via grades. Class did not have anything to do with intercultural communications, but rather JFK/MLK Jr era politics. More concerned with his Ph.D thesis than this class. We were guinea pigs for his thesis.
Betts is an awesome teacher. I took him not only for SPH 131, but for small group leadership. He is very understanding and completely interested in his students. I mentioned what I wanted to do after RVC and he helped me a lot. I would recommend him to everyone.
I took him for Speech 131 and enjoyed the class over all. He's willing to help if you need it and the class was usually fairly interesting. He also really likes to get people involved and get their opinions and is open to listening to what you have to say. Overall, great class!!!
Bob Betts is an excellent professor. Very open minded and willing to listen. However it's not a blow off class, and he really emphasizes careful organization in speeches. If you are not comfortable speaking in public, Betts makes it a very comfortable enviornment. Definetly take him if you have the opportunity, one of the best Profs at RVC.
Tremendous professor!!! He will go out of his way to help you. Great class and he makes it easy to excel!!!
Gtreat Teacher if you are willing to come to class. He is willing to help if you ask. If you participate in his discussions, you can get on his good side. Great sense of humor. He does have some temper issues, but only if you do something imature or out of the ordinary. He is very openminded and is a nice guy if you give him a chance.
Absolutely the best!
He is not understanding. He is very picky about things but doesn't really let you express yourself your way. I was looking forward to this class and was dissapointed. Also he isn't very good at telling you what he expects from you.
Overall good class. Betts is a very good teacher and sets you up for success if you go to class and do the work. He is very understanding and if you have something come up and let him know, he will be more than willing to work with you. Talk to him if you ever have a problem. On a personal level we did not click too well and had multiple run-ins.
He was a great teacher. He is very clear with his directions. The tests aren't very hard if you study the study guides he gives you. He was nice and I loved his class.
I didn't like Betts at all. I think for a communications teacher he is very close minded. He is inconsistant with his grading. Does not follow a structure rubric. Does not give explantions for his grading.
I would not suggest anyone take this professor. He humiliated more than one student in front of the entire class on separate occations. He played favorites when it came to grading and for having a degree in Communications, he has MAJOR communication problems! He is not a stable man and should not work with the public.
The class content helped me a great deal; what I learned about giving a speech will be something I know I'll use in the future. As for the professor, I was so glad to be rid of him. His behavior was sometimes passive-aggressive, rude, and on several occasions humiliated students. I was completely disappointed in his lack of professionalism.
I thought this teacher was absolutely horrible. He was dishonest in his grading, and doesn't listen properly. I can honestly say this was my worst teacher yet.If you have a choice to choose somebody else do it!
I have now completed 25 classes and still have to rate this professor as the overal WORST teacher I have EVER had--he is a poor example for his students as he requires more effort from his students than he is willing to give himself. Papers are graded late, he's late to class, he's not concise with his instructions, but rambles to hear himself talk
This guy is so full of himself. He is biased and subjective on all levels. He judges his students not on their work but them as a person and doesn't like when people question him and his opinions. picks favorites, fails everyone else. dont take
seriously, these kids must have a bone to pick, cause he's great! choose all your own topics, grades mostly on effort and proving you can research more than google. he's sarcastic, but only with kids who are pushing buttons.
i don't know if i was in an especially good class or not but i honestly can not see what most of you are talking about. if you're respectful of him, he's respectful of you. he's clear with his expectations and tells you exactly how he will be grading you, and even if your delivery is off you can still get a great grade if you do good research.
I think that he is a great teacher. If you use good research sights and follow his directions, you will do very well. If your lazy, your grade will reflect that. Even if you total mess up during the speaking part but have good research you will do well. He is always helpful, treat him with respect, show up for class and everything will be fine.
I took the second year of speech first, and he was a great teacher. I looked forward to going to his class. I made great friends and he incouraged friendship between the classmates. I am taking another class from him next semester. GREAT TEACHER. He really cares about your speaking ablilities. TAKE HIM!
Was very judgmental for a speech teacher.
I couldnt stand this teacher, every day i went to his class he gave us the same outline for a speech over and over again! he has his favorites, and he is very obbsessd with himself. and was constantly late to class. i didnt appreciate my bad grade on my midterm, when i was well aware of terrible peers in my class that were receiving 80's.DONOTTAK
Rude, disrespectful, and humiliating. I got a good grade in his class, and I still hated him.
He explains how he wants the speeches done very well. If you have questions he always answers them. He's very interested in making you a better speaker. Tough grader on research, he just doesn't like websites. So, research harder & you won't have a problem.
Great Teacher! Show up for class and follow the syllabus sometimes forgets to tell you about assignments but ALWAYS allowed an extention if you needed it. His class discussion truly opened my eyes.
Bob is hilarious! I dont know how people are saying he sucks/ is a bad teacher. Good at his job and his actually helped me improve my public speaking skills.
had him for speech, he would start the semester with grading hard and gave you areas to work on in you speeches. If you met with him to discuss and tried to improve your grade will go up easily. Also he is BIG into research for his speeches so keep that in mind in preparing speeches.
He was difficult because he focused on the research element behind speeches instead of the presentation of speeches. Towards the end of the semester, he required a lot of research to be presented but also presentation had to be excellent. He was a great teacher, if not a little particular about some aspects of the class.
he is very closed minded on subjects that he disagrees with students on and tries to refute and discredit students ideas on that subject... over all i dislike the teacher and he is very picky at anything that is not exactly what he wants
This class was okay. Betts was always running late. Terrible handwriting. He always seemed to want to be anywhere besides teaching. Speeches were graded very toughly.
I didn't like his teaching style at all, primarily because I felt that he didn't work with me and give me the feedback I wanted. I was confused as to the points I was losing on some of my speeches and asked him for information about it, and he was incredibly unresponsive. Thankfully English/speech is my forte so I still pulled an A.
Professor Betts' class was very very helpful. He tells exactly what you need to do to get an A, but you need to follow through specifically. Admittingly, the speeches were graded tough, but I learned a lot from his criticism. It was a down to earth class, and I wish I could take it over again.
overall I think hes a good teacher, people who think he is bad most likely got a bad grade and need some sort of blame other than themselves. I got a bad grade but it was my own doing. he tells you exactly what he wants to get a good grade. as for humiliation I didn't see that in my class and he was late a little bit but life happens sometimes
He is a great speech teacher. Makes an environment where class becomes a family by speaking and sharing. I tried to procrastinate and BS some work and he was not for that. Once we spoke, I shaped up and ended up with the grade I wanted. Clear rubric of expectations. Exams are on key terms and an essay using those key terms to design a speech.
He was a decent professor, and he gave plenty of time to prepare for speeches. The best advice I can give for his class is to ALWAYS have very good and credible sources in your works cited. Whether or not you actually use them is up to you. I got A's and B's on all my speeches after I figured this out.
Ok Proffessor, Tough Grader. Make sure that you use good credible sources. He is very picky about that. Overall, I did well, but given that speech is not really a strong suit for me I thought he was a bit anal with the grading. Be prepared for a point two-five, or a point seven five. Otherwise that he was a good prof.
Inconsistent grader, takes away points without being able to explain why. Hard to reason with, grades start around a c level. Very hard to get an A and NEVER utilizes office hours, or responds to e-mail.
He was only responsive when I was rude to him. The possibility of earning an A in this class was impossible due to the fact he graded speeches not off the basis that you could speak but if you could look information up and read it off a note card. His tests were pointless with no real tie to the class itself.
Requires 5 to 6 speeches. One of them is a group speech (with up to 8 classmates) that has to take up 45mins. He is a very tough grader with high standards. But he is very nice.
Very strict grading guidelines. Always make sure to have credible sources and never use any that aren't. Make sure to study well for the exams. The exams are based out of the textbooks and terms. I loved this class. I was able to speak in front of people and it was great. I would definitely take one of his classes again.
Betts gives you a very specific outline of what he expects for each speech but you must cite academic sources to pass! I've heard he's liberal so he grades conservative views harshly. I disagree and felt some speeches were offensive. Any negative feedback was from the class.
Mr. Betts is really into helping students become all they are capable of. I'm a shy person and hate public speaking; he realizes this and grades accordingly. He doesn't let you slip by but grades you low enough to push you to progress. I think all it takes to be successful is your own willpower and motivation, not being a good speaker.
As someone who is downright scared of public speaking, I found his class to be very welcoming and helpful. I learned tons of pointers and figured out how to make my speeches concise and effective. Professor Betts made my four week Summer speech course bearable by being a helpful, friendly guy. He is to-the-point but not harsh. Great guy.
I consider myself a speaker with professional training through the military as a briefer and I received a very high B. Other students that I felt were weak received B's and A's. He seems to grade you off of your individual potential instead of grading you off of the other students. This will benefit a weak speaker and hurt a charismatic person.
great prof, hotness irrelevant- here to learn and get degree- got a b worked hard but found his influence next qtr when had to do a speech in a class- i was actually comfortable doing a speech finally thanks to Prof Betts! Well worth the time and made it FUN!! GREAT PROF!! kudos to betts for doing a GREAT job and being PATIENT and KIND- TOugh,
I enjoyed his class and sense of humor. 5 total speeches, 4 indivual and 1 group. Mid term and final are tough.
Great teacher, very enthusiastic, and genuinely cares about his students. Great guy. One of my favorite teachers I've had.
He has set ideas politically and if your speech happens to conflict with his beliefs, your grade will reflect it. Even if your research is extensive, he'll discredit it because he doesn't agree with your point. I feel like people who side with him politically love him because he grades to encourage his beliefs... So much for "open debate/dialogue."
By far the worst teacher I had at RVC. Very condescending and often spoke to the students as if they were ignorant fools. There are many different speech teachers you can take for a better experience. Please stay away. There is no need to comment on the professional style of this professor. In my experience there was none.
A very specific grader but a great teacher. If you're looking for a teacher that actually cares and makes class fun, take Professor Betts. Yes awesome!
He is probably one of the most picky professors I have ever met. His grading is very inconsistent. For one speech, I used a visual aid in a way he liked. For the next speech, I did it in the same way and for some reason he did not like it and gave me a lower grade. Also, he'll tell you something is ok, but then later he'll he'll you it is not.
Show up, do your research, and you'll do well
Research is key to good grade. Make sure to show up, be on time, and take notes as best you can. He loves class participation and questions and is very accessible via email and office hours. He didn't assign much in textbook, but if you take the time to read the related chapters, you will have a solid advantage.
Professor Betts managed to make my first year of speech enjoyable rather than stressful and nerve-racking. He provided you with plenty of notice and instructions before each assigned speech. He also did not require anyone to memorize their speech; his focus is more on content. And participation matters significantly in his class!
Nice, passionate, helpful... But tough grader FOR SURE
Best one I have ever had. Speech is hard. You have to practice, regardless of the professor. But if you do what he says, each speech you write he checks on each person individually in class. If you do exactly what he says when he gives you individual help, and you practice, you will pass easy. Hes really smart so just do what he says.
This professor made too many mistakes in his grading. He was also was very unprofessional about it because he did not care to fix the grades, unless you chased him down.
Took this last year but he was a very nice professor. He was very helpful and if you do exactly as he instructed and follow his outline then youll be fine. I was very anxious to take a public speaking class but I left the class becoming more confident in public speaking. 10/10 would recommend. Research matters A LOT.
I was always so scared of public speaking, but Bob Betts creates a classroom environment that takes away that anxiety. He grades on content, not nervous ticks or memorization. Super enjoyable class with fun assignments. I would recommend to anyone taking a speech class.
If you havent took SPH 131, this is the professor you need in your life! Professor Betts is super funny but very professional. He creates such a comforting environment in his class that makes it so much easier for speech days. He tells you want he expects & gives clear instructions for every speech, (4 +1 group speech) and also for the tests (2).
Dr. Betts is a wonderful teacher. He is always willing to help if you need any clarification on anything. Really knows his stuff. He makes you work for your grade, but he's fair and clear on what he's looking for.
Professor Betts was amazing! I had him for online SPH 202 and it was one of the best classes I've ever taken. The work was papers and discussions and he was very clear on how to do them; these assignments were not difficult. He was a very involved teacher, even participating in most of our discussions. Very helpful and easy to communicate with.
His rubrics are easy to follow, easy class for speech. Simple effort to get an Easy A. His lectures are right to the point but his quizzes aren't on everything but picks what is on the test so you have to study everything. other than that
Betts is fantastic. I was dreading taking speech. I am someone who had speech anxiety and he made it quite easy to do well in the class. It is a comfortable environment, and you will not lose points for being shy or uncomfortable. I actually somewhat enjoyed doing a few of my speeches. If you have speech anxiety, I would 100% recommend him!
Amazing professor. Very clear grading criteria. Speech grades are almost completely based on ONLY the content in your speech. Group project is a 1 hour speech with 5-6 people. Basically just talking to your group mates about whatever you want for an hour. I actually learned a lot from Betts and got over my fear of public speaking.
Betts was never clear on his grading criteria and always rushed lectures. The only positive thing I can say about him is that he was accessible outside of class. I emailed him pretty much every other day to polish my speeches. I ended up with 6 points below the cutoff for an A (in a 500 point class) and he ghosted me when I asked about it.
Professor Betts was a really great teacher. He made sure everyone was comfortable even though speech is a stressful course for a lot of people. He grades pretty tough so you have to really work for an A.
Bob Betts is one of the best teachers I have had at rock valley. He is extremely caring and considerate of his students.
He's actually the one decent human being/professor I've had so far. He explains the assignment and directions well so you won't be lost. Really nice and respected. I missed out on one speech and he extended it due to my work cucking me even though I'm a full-time student.
Big brain giga-smurfing @ RVC, amazing teacher, totally popchamp.
Professor Betts is a great teacher! He is clear on what he expects and gives great feedback. Although, this class does require more work than what other speech professors require. The class has 4 speeches, 1 essay, and two exams.
I had Professor Betts for an online course. He ended up docking points because of a mild technology error that I did not have control of and that did not affect the flow of the speech at all. He was nice enough, but his feedback on the speeches I gave was not very helpful, and actually contradicted how he graded on the rubric. Confusing overall.
Plan your speeches and try and you should be fine. Read the instructions all the way through and ask for clarification if needed.
Speech class is a mandatory class to take in order to get your associate here. I have strong anxiety so speech class was the last thing I wanted to take. Luckily, I had it online, so some of the stress of being in front of a crowd was gone. Professor Betts does a good job at explaining assignments and he is always there if you need help or ideas.
Professor Betts is a very good teacher. I took Speech 131 as an online course and everything was very clear and concise in regards of homework. The workload was very manageable and the speeches were quite enjoyable. He is not a tough grader at all and gives thorough feedback. Loved how we didnt have to present in front of large groups :)
Mr. Betts is the kind of educator I want to be when I begin my career. He is a very supportive and helpful man and has a great sense of humor. He's incredibly friendly and fosters a very positive classroom environment. He does his best to help his students succeed in any way he can. If you want to work on your public speaking his class would be it.
First, I think Betts is an amazing professor who incorporates what you learn about the power of the spoken word into social issues. Second, his class is not an easy A. He gave me great feedback on how I can improve, but I did have to work harder than my friends in their SPH courses. Third, he truly cares about your understanding of the material.
Dr Betts is very straightforward with what he expects of your assignments. He gives plenty of resources as well as videos to help you make your speeches or essays. He is very kind, but also gives solid critiques of what you can improve on. It is an easy course if you do your work on time. He also provides the textbook for you.
I loved this professor! He was very orientated with his class, and he cares about his students and their academic performance very much. He is very helpful and wants the best for his students.
his feedback was very different from the grades he gave. Difficult class.
Don't take him for a winter class!! The problem isn't that the class is accelerated but because he is unclear of what he wants and then grades unfairly!
Definitely have to work hard for a good grade in the class but he's a nice guy!
This class can be challenging, but Betts is a supportive professor who wants you to succeed. Engage with the material, use resources like unstuck ai for study prep, and you'll do well. Attendance is important, so don't skip class.
If you need him for a winter class, I recommend taking one of the other professors. He may not be bad for a 16 week.
I was not able to attend alot of classes this semester and he was super accommodating to all of that. He was a hard grader though there was a few speeches I thought I did better than how he graded me but besides that he's great!
