He's okay. Not very effective at communicating ideas.
Great Teacher
Good teacher. Knows his stuff. Will improve with more experience.

Always willing to help you out. Knows everything about linguistics.

I think the class would have been better had he been a native speaker of English. His lecture was boring and way too hard to understand...some due to teaching style, some to dialect. Not to mention that he always held class over 5-10 minutes late....
Prof. Hong is pretty easy once you get used to the class. He gives a lot of make up time, which is always a good thing. He is hard to understand. . .only because of his accent. But overall, he is helpful and a preety decent teacher.
very intelligent person, and very helpful.
Great professor..helps students as much as possible...negotiates due dates, very flexible with journals and inclass work. Not very clear on some topics but tries his hardest! I would recommend him to anyone!
talks and talks about nothing. Has unusually... how do I say... pauses... in his speech... how do I say patterns. Thinks class is longer than it acutally is.
I appreciate all the help and understanding. By the way, it makes sense that a foreigner makes the best teacher. A native speaker doesn't realize everything he knows. I appreciate all the hard work he did and appreciate the extra efforts he made in class.
Great teacher. That he is a non-native speaker makes him MORE credible. As a side note, Bob used to sing in a metal band in S. Korea.
he is very helpful, and allows you to revise a poor paper and grades it again. he tries to help everyone, and negotiates due dates. he explains a lot for the most part.
Great guy! Hard class, ok impossible class, but he will help you get thru it. You wont regret taking DR. Hong
he is highly intelligent, but can't teach! He is difficult to understand b/c of his dialect. I did not understand one thing from linguistics! If you can avoid him!
I would tell you to avoid this class if doing so were possible for English majors. Awful, awful, awful. I have never learned less in a semester ,and I had perfect attendance. Tests are utterly indecipherable. A nice enough guy, but a horrible instructor.
I loved this class. Not to say that it is an easy A, but if you are willing to work hard it won't be too bad. This class has done a lot for me.
The best class I've taken so far. Not an easy class but it's well worth taking it.
The textbook is 10 times harder to understand, that says a lot about how good a job he does. I even will keep the linguistics textbook. don't wanna sell it.
Nice guy, Unclear on major assignments, Dialect makes understanding difficult, Avoid if possible, Heavy focus on linguistics

great guy, but takes 101 to an extreme level. an easy b, but a's are hard, very writing intensive, compared to other 101 instructors. better get 2 portfolio folders, he requires 4 drafts of every paper.
Most of the time he just rambles on without ever getting to the subject. Great guy but dialect is sometimes hard to understand. Easy class if you pay real close attention.
Great guy, really knows his stuff. I'm not sure about this dialect stuff. Wouldn't that be an accent? Sounds like the worst linguistics students complained. You couldn't ask for a more enthusiastic instructor.
excellent class. you couldn't ask for more!!!
very difficult class. you write A LOT, but it becomes fun. learned a lot in his Eng 102. the nicest professor I've met. He's willing to help you in any way he can.
He is an Asian teacher teaching Enlish linguisitcs in a different ways. I hope he will change for better.
Dr. Hong is an extremely enthustiac and interesting prof. Class is hard, but you will learn -- even if you didn't/don't have any hankerin' for linguistic thought. Tough class but Dr. Hong is very understanding and helpful. Just ask and he will get you through the class.
Distracting speech patterns...got it?got it?got it?...ok?ok?ok?...Unclear expectations. (I got an A in two of Lumpkin's classes and an A from History's Duke but got a B from this professor.) Worked to hard for a B. Learned a few interesting things, but overall boring. :o(
He is doing his best to help American students learn English better. Try and see that.
He was very helpful in the fact you could email him about your paper and would get a response in a couple of hours. In that respect he was a great professor. But he also is very confusing and sometimes hard to understand. His expectations are a little confusing on the last couple papers too.
Where to begin? He's a rambler. He's very picky with the paper's he assigns. you have to pay close close attention in his class and you have to turn everything in on time!
Great professor. Does what he can to help the students. Very enthusiastic. Has lots of great, funny stories to share. I recommend him.
i somehow got a B when i wasn't sure if i was gonna pass. he is really strict on how the papers, and his lectures are funny and interesting but not always helpful. you have to turn in one page summarys for every class, which they get old. he doesnt give tests or a final, and i somehow ended up with a B, so he wouldnt be that bad of a pick
Really helpful, easy to get along with, will answer any questions you have, and you can redo your papers as many times as you want!
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Hong. WARNING: If you do not care and you do not want to learn, try another class.
This prof sucks. His lectures are boring and lax but assignments are hard as can be. Stear clear of this guy.
Dr. Hong is an excellent professor. He truly wants you to learn what is important and encourages you to view things outside of the "box". I would have done better in his class if I weren't so distracted- I think he's so handsome...I highly recommend!!!
He's a pretty cool kid. He trys to use teenager and young adult language but hes is like 50 something, but I'm not going to lie. He's pretty hott. He often says "yayayaya" Seriously though, I think he is a pretty good teacher you have multiple times to revise papers so it shouldn't be that hard to get an A if you are not lazy. Hes moderately easy.

Dr. Hong is a hot little chinese guy who knows what he's talking about. He's also packin some heat so look forward to a big distraction. I'd recomend him for a professor.
Very good professor. He's not Chinese...HE'S KOREAN! His accent is hard to understand at first. There is a portfolio to do so KEEP UP AS THE CLASS GOES!!!! It'll be LESS stressful. he grades papers a little strict but gives multiple chances to redo the paper and resubmit for a better grade. Anyone would be stupid not to take advantage of it...
pretty good teach, funny, just be on his good side (by participating, and actually talking to him during confrences), and youll be fine
cool teacher. Loved going to class. I would just gaze at his manly beauty. Sigh. I thought his name was Hung. Guess I was wrong
LIke some others have said, don't take this class unless you plan to work. If you work, it is a wonderful class. Besides, Dr. Hong is so handsome and intelligent, coming to class is a pleasure.
Hong is a pretty nice guy! He has his own way of teaching... he will push you to be a better student. If you do not want to learn or you just don't care, then do not take this class! Overall, pretty easy class and I enjoyed it!
He's a bit quirky and doesn't tell you what will be on the tests, but I learned a lot from him and he made the classes interesting. Don't let the negative reviews dissuade you from taking one of his classes; he doesn't tell you what he expects, but he doesn't grade hard.
He was rude and did not help when questions were asked.
Possibly the worst teacher at this university. I dropped after two weeks. You could not understand anything he said and he would not talk about anything related to english. He loves talking about pens and how much money he spends on shoes.
Linguistics is fantastic! You must keep an open mind though or you will fail. Attendence is a must but as long as you study you will be fine. I loved this class! He is pretty hot for a Korean too haha! He goes on tangents a lot but they are interesting.
I dont even know where to start! HORRIBLE!!! I am definitely one of those kids that tries as hard as they can through college and I couldn't do a thing in his class! He talks in tangents all class period, during his conferences with you about your paper he makes no sense, he is just completely incomprehensible! Acts like he wants to help yet doesnt
Where to begin: The class itself isn't outragious, but he doesn't teach by even his choice in book's standards on intro linguistics. Tests are frustratingly hard, but not graded harshly. It's impossible to understand everything on them. He waited until the final four weeks of the semester before getting us started on the 12 page ppr project.
This class was absolutely useless aside from the fact that I learned the IPA and can pronounce words now. He will literally throw a bunch of concepts at you and then test you on it with no care as to whether you comprehend what he rambles about. He never went according to schedule, and has you do a 12 pg paper about stuff he didn't really cover.
sometimes hard to understand because he's it a native English speaker, but he teaches and answers questions well and completely
this was the worst class i ever took, bob hong makes everything difficult to understand and says "do you get it" a million times and no 1 ever gets it, if you have other teacher options, take them, he is prob the hardest instructor at marshall
This teacher is literally a babbling idiot. I don't understand how he got a degree from any university. His notes are utter nonsense, and his lectures are don't tie in with any material. His feeble attempt to appear intelligent by speaking in an abstract manner is an obvious facade that can be deciphered on day one. Do not take him for any class.
Continued from below. I am literally sitting in his class right now typing this while he discusses reutementary concepts that should have been learned in third grade.
Best Teacher ever!
Dr. Hong is a really nice professor and I don't understand why he gets so much hate! Yes he rambles but he's entertaining and friendly. He's merciful with his quizzes and exams. If you try at all, you'll do fine. Talking with him outside of class is always helpful.
Dr. Hong is the best teacher ever. I know what he talks is really difficult, but if you get what he's talking about, you are so obsessed with his class. His graduate course is one of the most popular class, having many thesis students ever. but unfortunately you need to be smart enough to understand what he is talking about.
Bob is a nice man, but difficult to follow. I was failing and he told me that he would NOT pass me if I didn't deserve it. I scraped by with a D and took it and ran. I don't know if other people have this difficulty with his accent, but I had a VERY hard time understanding him.
DR HONG is one the best teachers in the world. The secret to pass his class: Come to every class.Do not be late nor leave early. If you do this then you should surely pass. It takes attendance VERY seriously!!!!
I HATED Linguistics until I took Dr. Hong. I only took the class because some of my classmates begged me to take it as an elective. I seldom cave to peer pressure, BUT was glad I did. His lectures and essay assignments are a bit lengthy BUT he knows his stuff and will meet with you one on one if necessary.
I think that he is very hard to follow. To pass his class you need to actually attend class, for sure. He kind of talks in circles and doesn't answer questions well. I had him for Texting in the World, and I would not take him or the class again, it was way to hard to take notes and follow his lectures.
If you can help it, do not take any class taught by this professor. Dr. Hong talks in circles and REFUSES to give DIRECT ANSWERS to questions. His notes are absolutely chaotic, and his "explanations" of concepts are very vague. The class itself was not hard, but the way that he asked questions made it impossible to give correct answers.
I can understand some of the negativity below but I would assume most are based on his manner of speaking (outside of his accent, which is actually masterful to my ear based on his background). Have patience with him and engage him outside of class and you will find a new side of him, and some remarkably interesting thought processes and pieces.
Dr. Hong is a fantastic professor and very smart. Really knows his stuff and is passionate about it. As long as you engage with him and write the required papers, you'll pass whatever class you take with him. Those who say you shouldn't take classes with him and he just rambles haven't taken enough classes with him.
Very good professor. I enjoyed the classes I had/have with him, due to his teaching style and such.
He is a really nice guy and usually grades pretty easy, but he does not use Blackboard so you won't know your grade. The whole class is a lecture that leads up to the last paper. There were three papers total, but he is really passionate about his field and wants you succeed in not only his class, but in other classes.
This professor is a absolute no go. I would never recommend this professor to anyone. He does not answer questions directly. Does not use black board so you do not know your grade. Midterm is ridiculous. I would just stay away from this professor.
Very difficult professor. He knows the material, but doesn't know how to teach it. He is smart and he knows it. Sometimes the class feels more like he is just trying to show off what he knows instead of actually teaching. Don't recommend.
Professor Hong is a very complex man. While he does know all the information, I feel his students more or less stare and pretend to comprehend what he is saying. I mean he said, "a college is not a college, a building is not a building." His exams are pretty straight forward and you must study his content. He tries to keep his class interesting too
Texting the world seemed like a fun class to take until I took Professor Hong. He uses notes that do not correlate and wont answer your questions directly. The midterm was horrible and he wanted the definitions verbatim to the book although it was close book exam. Grades really hard on homework and does not offer help.
worst professor ive had for an english class. pretty sure he only passed me because i continuously emailed him about failing
Dr. Hong, is a very difficult professor. When asking a question, he does not respond with a real answer. Instead, he just completely side tracks the question and makes it so much more difficult. I had actually went up to him after class one day to get clarification and he said, "good luck." Definitely the WORST professor I have had so far.
100% do not recommend. He is nice but does not know how to teach. Midterm was awful. Worst class I've ever taken and isn't not like a normal English class. Stay away from it.
Dr. Hong is super nice, but his lectures are kind of confusing. He grades kind of hard.
He knows what he is talking about but he doesnt know how to teach it or explain the course material. He will talk around the subject or jump to different topics during 1 class and you never know whats going on. It was the same when answering questions. His assignments never made any sense and my tutor couldnt even help me. I had to withdraw.
i dont know why he has such bad reviews, he is honestly not a bad professor. His eng200 class is not difficult as long as you attend class and actually pay attention to what he saying. he is also a really nice person.
He is a pretty cill dude that tries to help as much as possible. he really wants his student so learn.
Dr. Hong is a great professor. He really knows his subject and enjoys teaching it. He is VERY strict with attendance. However, if you make every class and do the assigned reading and writing, you should not have any problems. He is willing to meet one on one after class or in his office to clarify any assignments/writings.
Consider this rating a 3.5. Dr. Hong is a smart man who seems to know his subject very well, but his explanations are a bit confusing.
Dr. Hong was a decent professor. Although his lectures are a little confusing, if you take notes and participate he will be very willing to help. The entire class is about context, so his lectures make sense once you realize he is trying to make you grasp the context of what he is saying. Take notes, go to class, and participate.
Overall a very nice guy, however, his class was so confusing. The homework and quizzes really were not hard but he did grade hard for what they were. No final, just a final paper but you are kinda thrown into the fire for that. Percent of Final grade Final Paper: 30% Midterm: 20% Quiz&Hw: 30% Final Proposal: 5% Peer Review: 5% Participation: 10%
He has been one of my favorite professors so far at Marshall. He is eccentric and funny and you can tell he's interested in what he does. He can be very hard to understand sometimes, by the way he tries to explain things. He does participation points so that he can try to get everyone to speak up at least once, and he tries to talk to everyone.
Great professor, his lectures are very entertaining and the socratic method of teaching is very refreshing. As a Science Major this class was easy to grasp. You can't expect to memorize your way through, you will actually have to think critically in this class which made it fun and interesting. If you need a CT credit, take this class.
BEWARE this is not a normal English class. Dr. Hong is smart but confusing in terms of his explanations. midterm dropped everyone's grades hard. He is a HEAVY lecturer and talks himself in circles. I do not recommend if you're looking for a humanities class. Very intense for a non-major class. Thought I was good at English until I took this class.
Dr. Hong is a great professor. ENG 200 is no cake walk and there are hard concepts but Dr. Hong does his best to explain them to you at a fundamental level. The pace of the class is slow compared to others so its easier to pick up on the concepts. If you come to class and pay attention you will get a good grade 100%.
Bob is a very nice man and means well but his teaching style is very confusing and it is hard to hear him throughout his lectures. The homework makes no sense and is not your normal english class. I dropped this after midterm and from what ive been told it dropped the other students grade hard. I highly suggest to find another professor.
This class is not English, it is more so looking at how different words can be used to convey different meanings in a concealed way. For example, you can refer to someone as a sister, an employee, a smuck, and many other things. The choice of words can show how the speaker feels about that person or action. This class is profound. I hope you enjoy!
He tries to lecture; however, talks in circles to where no one knows what he is talking about. Just when you think you start to understand it you will have a quiz and then it will be completely different from what was taught in class and the cycle just keeps on going. Midterm is extremely hard and he doesn't give out perfect grades.
I truly am so grateful for the grade I ended with, however, I do not know how i ended with an A. Extremely stressful class. Although very intelligent professor, his explanations are too complex for a 200 level class, especially if you are not an English major. The class material is very simple, but the professor makes it hard.
Very nice professor but not very clear. He is a tough grader, and the material is overcomplicated. I would not recommend if you are not an English major. I also had trouble getting responses to my emails throughout the semester.
Seems like a sweet guy, but his lecture is all over the place, I feel like I don't learn a thing in his class, we spent an hour just talking about the word "Complex" I am good at English, but this class is extremely confusing.
I took him to get a Humanities credit out of the way but ended up really enjoying this class, he is so funny he will talk half of the class if you're not careful but when you get him starting on teaching, he will go on and on, sometimes he is a little hard to understand because the topic is so complex but you can easily ask for questions.
Professor Hong's ENG200 class is no easy feat, but if you put in the work, the payoff is worth it. The concepts can be complex, but his eccentric teaching style and Socratic method make it an engaging experience. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for my study prep - definitely check it out alongside the textbook readings.
Very interesting class but dont take him if you dont enjoy class participation; youll get so much more out of the class by really engaging with the content and asking Qs. He likes going on tangents and answering abstractly but he literally goes over everything with you before assignments. Let him know when youre confused—he wants you to understand!
He's a funny guy and really just wants people to participate. If you engage with him, he'll be very happy and class will go a lot smoother.
Dr. Hong makes class very fun. His homework can be challenging, but he is open to working with students. The entire course goes into the final paper which isn't terrible if you paid attention in class. I would definitely take this class again.
I genuinely hated everything about this class. It was a nightmare. The material is very difficult, and his teaching style is all over the place. I always left confused. I will never take any classes with him again because of how difficult he grades. This irrelevant class will weigh down your GPA. However, he is hilarious!!!!!
I missed the final because I was in the hospital and he gave me a failing grade.
Bob Hong is a very sweet guy, but his class is not fun. He is super funny but his lectures are very confusing and the explanation of assignments is very bizarre. Sweet guy but I would not take him if you don't like English and don't like lectures.
