Don't like the man, but he does explain things very well, tests are difficult
I wouldn't take him if you paid me $10,000
he is good, i liked his quizzes for e.c
If your name is not Alan Greenspan, you can expect to fail
tests are difficult but extra credit quizzes help A LOT!
nice, good teacher, doesn't tolerate sleeping or not paying attention, friendly
If you do bad on his tests, he gives a bonus quiz thats usually easy
Explains material very well; read before class to get max e.c. points on quizzes
Hard class, but he was a good professor, must pay attention and attend

Bad course in general.
Funny Guy, Explains hard stuff great, E.C. quizzes lifesavers. DON T FALL ASLEEP
Although tempting-- DON'T FALL ASLEEP! Really fun professor-- and quizzes help!
Explains things very well, study notes hard for test.
He is probably the straightest shooter in the Econ dept.
tests are kind of hard
Clear and Entertaining teacher, Tests hard, but Extra Credit helps
Really great professor-- fun (as fun as economics can get) and really clear

i know nothing about econ and i got a B. sit up front , ask questions. nice guy.

Great, great guy. Knows his stuff. DON'T fall asleep. 10X better than Jerome. Take Horn if you need 270!!
nice guy, sometimes takes him a long time to say things though.
gives bonus quizzes that help. No attendance policy. Very accomodationg

Not very helpfull. He is unclear in his explinations and isnt consistant in his material. Real hot head.
Get's pissy if a lot of students don't do the reading. He's a bit arrogant and defintely doesnt make econ easy. I've had worse profs though. Not that bad.
This is just a hard class. Tests are HARD, no curve. Extra Credit pop quizzes, but they're so hard you can't get points...and you can get points taken away! You can't win with Macro...
i think he explains the information very well. although his tests are very difficult. but if you go to office hours, he will do all he can to help you. he really does want you to succeed. take advantage of the hours, he'll really help you out.
Econ is just hard. He's an ok teacher and tries to make class fun. Quizzes are extra credit but his quizzes and tests are pretty hard. Be sure to read the book and study!
Definitely do the reading, because that is all he tests on. He is a real hot head, will kick you out of class for not reading or sleeping.
The guy likes to hit on girls...being a guy i was screwed. Tests are way tough, but i squeezed out a C. He really wants everyone to try and do well; make sure you do the reading, he'll get pissed if you don't and even kick you out of class
I got a B in his class, AND I DONT EVEN HAVE****!
Not the best teacher teacher, but somehow I got a B. He's nice and all, but his test are insane.
go to class and the tests are so much easier AND you can take the extra credit pop quizzes. the no attendance policy can screw you though. he's very understanding and a very cool dude. made me want to major in econ.
The only test I did well on was the one I missed 4 out of the 6 classes for... so do the reading... but his tests are still really tough, and he is intimidating in class
your grade depends upon how much he likes you. on the first day of class he pointed me out and said he had hair like mine in college and thought it was really cool. I never missed a class, got D's on EVERY test, and somehow got a C in the class.
horn does a great job at keeping your interest
Very egotistical. Seems uninterested in helping students. Tests are unpredictable.
He is very thorugh with his explanation of material you HAVE to go class to even understand the book. Economics is very hard and boring. He tries to keep you interesting but doesnt do a good job. Tests are impossible even if you study but he gives extra credit if you go to class
Probably one of the worst Econ teachers you can get. His tests are insane even if you study and think you know the material. Likes to make fun of the class especially if you did bad on a quiz/test. There are definitely better econ teachers out there... I wouldn't recommend Horn.
He grades on how well he likes you. Not very helpful in explaining things and made a lot of bad jokes. I would not recommend this econ teacher.
Everyone makes him sound so bad! He's a really nice guy and I thought he was a good teacher. No one's saying that the class isn't hard, but as long as you actually STUDY, you'll do fine. He gives TONS of extra credit and makes the class interesting. He can makes some bad jokes, but overall he's good
He's a nice man who loves to smoke and play guitar -- class gets boring and tests are hard but tons of EC will boost the grade - not grade, but funny and enjoyable, better than most
Huuuge hippie! Soooo nice and makes class funny. Hard tests, but he really wants his students to do well, so go to him for help and he'll work something out for you! I'd take him again!
interesting class
Huge Hippie. Admitted it! Really cool prof but hard tests. He lets you choose b/t written or multiple choice...Choose WRITTEN! scored 20 points better on the written. Kinda rambles, kinda monotone but decent. Go to this office hours.Nice to girls, mean to guys. Weekly POP quizes are not fun so you really can't miss class. Shucks!
nice funny guy; keeps class fun even though subject material can be boring; genuinely wants you to do well; gives quizzes that DONT count against you but only add extra credit points to tests; I would definately recommend taking him
dr horn is such a chill guy. he gets a little angry sometimes when people dont answer his questions. But overall,if you go to his office hours, he really does want to help you and make you do well in his class. its a tough course just because of the subject material, but he tries hard to make it as easy as possible and give tons of extra credit
horn is cool because he gives random quizzes that are completely for extra points-they only add to your grade. if he feels like you are interested and trying hard in his class, he'll give them out all the time, and they reallllly help at the end of the semester

Dr. Horn is an amazingly nice and fun teacher to have; his class persuaded me to be an econ major. He does everything in his power to help out his students, including allowing notecards on exams. He also loves talking with his students about rock music and blues, and loves to get to know his students.
Can I just say that I studied for 5 days straight before his exam and I got a D on it. The questions on his exams are hard and confusing, they don't seem like anything he's taught. He seems like a smart guy and he's nice, but he can't teach at all.
Dr. Horn has a very short fuse and can be very demanding in instruction for an introductory course. He teaches well, but his temper became really frustrating for me. As for actual learning, I thought he did a pretty good job teaching and is willing to help his students. Good taste in music. :)
bob is awesome! he's so cool and funny. class was never boring. he gives random quizzes that boost your grade and never hurt you. they're on the reading so be sure to read and understand the material. take him!
I LOVE BOB! HE IS SIMPLY THE COOLEST PROF YOU'LL FIND IN HARRISONBURG, VA!!! EVER!! TAKE HIS CLASS. DO YOUR HOMEWORK, PARTICIPATE AND EVEN IF YOU FAIL, HE WILL DO EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER (AS LONG AS YOU SHOW THAT YOU ARE REALLY TRYING) TO HELP YOU OUT! TAKE ANYTHING HE TEACHES!
Mean professor. Makes the class much harder than it needs to be. If you take him, prepare to study hard and get a D.
Nice professor. People say hard tests (I still got A's on them) but they are boosted by frequent extra credit quizzes. Those are your only grades... tests plus about 3 extra credit quizzes per test. Go to class (no attendance policy) and take notes. Don't read the book. People who say he is hard just shouldn't be taking econ. Sorry folks.
Test are hard but he makes class a boring subject as interesting as it can be. Quizes are extra credit that will boost your grade. He always relates problems in class to things that students can grasp easily...for example, parties, and Ben and Jerry's icecream! Ha! He cracked me up! Definately an enjoyable class, great Econ teacher!
Horn is a good teacher, entertaining, but has an attitude. Read if you're gonna go to class or else he gets pissed. Tests are MC and short answer/essay. Gives pop quizzes so go to class. Econ is hard, but he makes it managable. I would recommend him.
Teaches pretty much straight from the book, but unfortunately he throws pop quizzes so you kinda have to show up for class most of the time. Really easy class...definitely way easier than principles of macro or micro.
I HATE ECON! i took micro and i droped it b.c. i got a 48 on my test, but in his class i have a B hes actually awesome if you go to his office hours study the notes in order and thats pretty much the test do the work and you can pull off a B. he relates stufff to you and i mena who likes econ NOONE hes prob the best econ teacher jmu has
Certainly a hard class, but he makes it interesting and understandable. His tests are difficult and the quizzes are random. Don't worry about your grade too much though because I thought I had a solid C and ended up with a B. Take him
Explains things really well in lecture. Gets mad if you don't read sometimes. Tests are fair. Overall good professor, would take again!
Good teacher. Tough material though. It is a difficult class. Have to read the book before the tests. Has pop quizzes in class so you need to attend class. Gives a quiz after every test and if you do well you get extra credit. The last test kicked my butt though so I ended up with a C.
big hippie who loves using bmw and anything european for his examples. can be kind of confusing but he's super helpful in his office hours. loves the book "the choice" so don't slack off in reading it. attending class is helpful b/c his tests aren't easy. multiple choice are pretty hard but short answer help boost your grade.
I had 2 withdraw this class 4 personal reasons. Hard, but not impossible. The tests arent easy, but not unfair.(except 4 the 2nd exam). Comes off as very serious and strict at first, but justified. very willing 2 help students. Explains material more clearly than ANY OTHER ECON prof that I have taken here. Much rather take him for econ than others
He must have totally switched his style with my class. 15% of grade is online homework which should help. Tests are tricky but if you read the chapters before the test you will do fine. When he said we could treat it like an Online class I took him up on it and never went and I did fine. Need to put in a decent amount of effort for a decent grade.
If you ever have to take ECON in the summer, take him. The class is not easy but it's fair. He's not trying to fail you and is really helpful. You should read the book, unless you want him to flip out in class. But overall he's a great professor and really knows how to make an otherwise dull subject interesting.
Take him in a summer session, he gets to the point and is quick. Good teacher!!
Definitely take this class during the summer. I was dreading this class, but it was quick and painless. He grades fair, tests are fair, and quizzes are fair. Yes, like someone noted before. Definitely do the readings before coming to class or he flips out.
Explains things very well and keeps the class interesting enough to stay awake.
He is good professor. He teaches things well and explains things clearly. only thing i dont like is he seems to take it personally if you forgot stuff from 201 and he tests you on the extremely rare econ situations that you dont need to know. overall i would recommend him though.
VERY hard tests. Is very confusing in class and when you try and contradict what he says, he make you look like an idiot. Will freak out over little things when he could just ask politely. Interesting subject but wish there was another professor.
He is a great teacher! He makes things very easy to understand. All Econ tests are hard, but Bob helps so much. Go to his office hours, he will work out problems with you! Before the final I got an 85, 91.5 (with extra credit), and 87.5 on the tests. Not sure what I got on the final but I got an A in the class. Easy homeworks online too. TAKE HIM!!
Bob Horn commands respect but is a very fair and reasonable professor. He can be a bit moody. Lectures are interesting and put the material into perspective. DO THE READING and aplia assignments well and you'll be fine for the tests. Oh, and his voice sounds just like Ms. Doubtfire!!
He is a fair teacher, the class is just difficult. Practice, Practice, Practice! He is always willing to help you just have to know the right questions to ask with what concepts you need help with. Understanding the class is challenging, he gives occasional opportunities for extra credit. RECOMMEND!
I love Bob. Ended up with an A-, learned way to late that he's an awesome guy and is super helpful in office hours. See him in his office and just hang out, he'll print off his personal notes for you. Bob's a great guy and while Econ isn't the most interesting class, he makes it enjoyable (he teaches the economics of beer like every class).
Bob is good at teaching--so long as you also do your readings and take the assignments seriously. DON'T slack off, the exams are quite difficult. See him during office hours if you struggle. Sometimes moody, sometimes funny. I recommend him for GECON 200.
He is very laid back and is uses very good examples. Although attendance is not mandatory, you should go to class because all you really need for the tests are the notes. The tests are somewhat tricky, but are manageable. There are 3 tests and a final, and myeconlab- which is annoying. Easy to get a B.
REALLY GOOD TEACHER. hIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM. ONE OF THE TOP ECON TEACHERS OUT THEIR.
Bob is awesome! Not only is he a great teacher but he is so helpful. You have about 2 quizses per chapter and do about a chapter a week but Myeconlab (the site you use) is super easy and if you miss a quiz, Bob lets you make it up. His tests are all about the concepts so if you study and understand the concepts, you will do well
In 5 years I've never liked a teacher less than Bob Horn. Makes you sign up for 90$ Aplia so he doesn't have to write out any quizzes. Class is mandatory; he choose the 8 am time slot. My First Econ teacher said; I can't tell you what stocks to invest in, what the next big business will be, or what profession to work in. Sums up what you learn here
Upside: he's good at making material clear to the class. Downside: he's got a short fuse and can get condescending or even a little nasty.
Now don't get me wrong, I've had some pretty terrible teachers at JMU.. But Bob Horn is undoubtably the WORST. With his awful teaching techniques, you are far better off not going to class. 95% of class is spent either listening to his political rants or irrelevant tangents. I only got a B because I studied for about 8 hours per test. AVOID!
Good professor. If you do not pay attention during class he may call you out on it. Tests can be tricky, but he is very good at breaking concepts down. Office hours are great opportunity to do practice problems with him.
Quizzes are online and fairly easy, but tests are very difficult. You have to be willing to dedicate time to this class, which is where I went wrong. Final exam he allowed a notecard full of information to help, which was the only reason I passed.
Literally the rudest and least helpful professor I have ever had here. He grades based on how much you participate in class and how much he likes you. Attendance/Participation is completely arbitrary and also entirely based on his opinion of you. ALWAYS go to class, he's rude to you otherwise. Avoid him for the sake of your GPA and sanity.
Bob is great and has a fun sense of humor, I took him for ECON of immigration and it was the first time he taught it. the class was pretty good but there aren't many grades in the class so if you mess up once you're in trouble. Definitely a decent teacher, take him!
Professor Horn makes Macro easy to understand. Just reading the text gave me a general idea of what the chapter was about, but his lectures cleared everything up 100%. He will insult you if you're not paying attention in class, but then you deserve it. Just pay attention, and go to the PASS session, and you'll get a high B or low A.
Horn is actually one of the best teachers I've ever had, as long as you go to every class and pay attention, getting a B will not be hard! Just don't take out your phone or fall asleep
He's a nice guy , knowledgable . Not an easy ECON class for slackers , you have to study and read before class . I studied pretty hard and got B+ .Because his lectures are long and he covered lots of materials so makes sure you go to his office hours . This can save ur grade. AND DONT SKIP CLASS cuz you will not understand anything .
This was a pretty hard class, but as long as you study, go to class, and go to Dr. Horn's office hours its pretty manageable. Horn is very knowledgable, but he is pretty rude to his students. Your grade consists of 4 tests and a few online quizzes. Also don't touch your phone in class...
You can barley hear him speak when he talks. Tests were extremely difficult, and required a lot of critical thinking. He is very strict about cell phone use and if he catches you he will hold your phone hostage until the next class. In addition to not being able to hear him I barley understood any of the concepts he was trying to explain in class.
He look very cool at the beginning, but with the time he starts to try people as he pleases. His explanation in class is not bad at all, but he makes the multiple choice questions in the exams as confusing as they can be. If you feel he does not like you, drop the class, no matter how is your grade, he fails people based in his own opinion of them
Overall what you put into this class is what you'll get out of it, and overall the professor does a decent job explaining things. Though in class he can be very hostile, and has called students"idiots" for giving incorrect answers. He has a very hot temper and if you don't know an answer, or check your phone then he'll kick you out of class.
Professor Horn does a really good job of explaining the material in class. To do well in the class, you'll definitely have to study from the textbook and do the homeworks and quizzes on MyEconLab. He can be pretty funny at times too.
Just awful
Dude has a pretty good temper but his explanations are very well done.
Tough grader, barely gives any partial credit, and openly says that he adjusts your grade based on participation. If it's at 8am, you better be prepared to go to every class. The tests are nothing like the online homework assignments and are very hard. Simply put, he's not a nice person and class is miserable. Avoid Horn, he's a terrible professor.
He's an extremely smart guy, but not a great person. His lectures are boring and if he even thinks you're not paying attention, he'll call you out in front of the entire class, sometimes being extremely rude and condescending. You have to know everything inside and out for his tests. I would not take him again
Very rude and unfair grader. deducts marks for attendance.
Very bad professor, you cant ask questions on class cause he makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Topics covered in class werent as difficult but when it comes to exams he ask questions that we didnt go over on class, would not recommend this professor, avoid at all cost!!
Really rude guy with a short temper. Lectures make the information easier to understand than the book, but the tests are still hard. Will make you feel stupid for asking a question/ not understanding the information DO NOT TAKE
Smart guy but a very rude person. Gets mad when you ask questions and claims theres no attendance policy but will lower your grade if you dont show up. Do not take!
Honestly bob is the man. He does have a short temper but if you show him you're trying he will literally raise your grade at the end of the semester. Attendance does matter to him, he has no policy but understand that if you don't show up you're only hurting yourself on the tests, he rewards good attendance. Put in effort and go to office hours
Don't even think about partial credit on exams, doesn't care about you or how you do on tests, gets mad at you for asking questions or not answering in class, short tempered. Probably one of the worst professors Ive had at JMU. Pearson homework is a joke, doesn't relate to what we do in class and he doesn't go over. Don't recommend taking this guy.
Horn is one of the worst professors in the economics department. He is condescending and does not care if you learn or not. He will grade you on homework that he has not taught over and you can forget about partial credit. During office hours, he is anything but helpful and repeats what he said like you don't speak english.
He is an amazing teacher. Makes hard concepts easy to understand. However, he has a temper and can make you feel stupid for asking a question or not knowing something. Do not use your phone in class.
I have mixed feelings about this professor. His lectures are very helpful and gives great examples for the tests. However, some of the test material I have never seen or heard in my life and I read the textbook and went to every class. I ended up getting a B. Sometimes he curves or gives extra credit. He is funny but also condescending.
He is by far the worst professor I've had at JMU. He makes condescending jokes towards students who answer his questions wrong, rather than just helping them understand it more clearly. You're better off choosing ANY other professor in the economics deparment.
Dr. Horn is great! 331 is a hard class but if you go to every lecture he gives you everything you need for the tests (especially the examples he does in class). As long as you show you care/participate and go to office hours you won't get lower than a C (taking good notes are a must btw).
Bob is the best ECON teacher at JMU. 270 was the first econ class where things made actual sense thanks to his lectures. He explains things clearly that makes it so easy to understand. He is harsh on people who don't answer correctly or on their phones in class. As long as you pay attention and do the HW this is an easy A.
Honest review: Prof. Horn is nice but is a cranky depressed guy whose mood fluctuates wildly. Many Econ professors, especially at JMU, are ridiculously weird and weirdly ridiculous--sometimes outright... unstable. As for the class itself, you WILL need CALCULUS, namely optimization and minimization. JMU Econ dept in general stupid amt. of work
By far the rudest and uncaring professors I've ever had at JMU. He will make fun of students for asking "dumb" questions and always comes off as angry. If the class doesn't know something he'll call them incompetent and refuse to teach it. Tests are VERY difficult and require a lot of studying.
He's not very accessible outside class and he's not very good with technology which was especially bad because I took his class online. He also fails to communicate clearly both in lectures and with just information like when tests are or how the class is going to work.
This is the rudest and most disrespectful teacher/professor I have ever had. Students are terrified to speak up because he is likely to call you a joke or waste if you are wrong/not certain of the answer. He has zero patience for students who take a little extra time to understand the content. He is a reason I do not want to continue in business.
He does good examples in class, but he can be rude at some points. Has a good sense of humor. Lots of online homework and quizzes on the readings which can be lengthy but they can help boost your grade. He is a good teacher who has good lessons, overall if you go to class, pay attention, and do the readings you should get a B or higher.
Horn doesn't really explain what will be on examinations very well. While I would understand his teachings in class, none of it would be on the exams and I felt like I had never seen it before.
Honestly I heard rly bad things but he's not terrible, honestly a really good teacher he explains things very well. He can be a little mean/he gets frustrated when people don't read or answer in class, the tests were hard but just study and you should be fine
Rude to all students One girl in class asked a question about the math used in a problem. He said "this is elementary math. If you dont understand it, you shouldnt be here" Some guy asked him to repeat a question and he yelled at him saying he's useless and not paying attention. Told him to go back to sleep. Students are afraid to ask him questions
Professor Horn was a rollercoaster. One day he is making jokes about beer and using prostitutes as examples for questions. The next day he is yelling at students for asking a question he believes is dumb or someone looking for clarification. The best way to describe this class is that the goods are eh, and the bads are really really bad.
I took this professor for International Economics and it was horrible. I loved the material but the professor made me nervous to come to class and anxious to speak up. He has straight up called students stupid. Also do NOT use your phone in class. He dropped someone's letter grade by a letter cuz they were on their phone in the beginning of class.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had at JMU so far. Would claim you had to "come to his class to succeed" but I basically had to teach myself the entire semester because honestly his lectures were not very good. He is not very approachable and creates a terrible classroom environment. Wouldn't recommend unless he's your last choice.
Funny guy. He isn't very patient but it's kind of refreshing. He teaches pretty much from the book and uses MindTap for homework & weekly Packback assignments. Be respectful, do your work, and participate and he won't be mean to you. Take the exams seriously because they count for pretty much all of your grade. Interesting material.
Professor Horn was one of the most interesting professors I have had in my college career. He is incredibly impatient, rude, and condescending. His philosophy when teaching is "don't wait for me to tell you, use your brains and figure it out." Interesting material but this professor is not worth taking.
PLEASE email the Econ department head the second this man says anything rude or inappropriate to you. He knows what he can get away with in certain classes, and will take advantage of students' timidness in reporting his behavior. His profanity-filled outbursts made it hard for me to learn content, despite his lectures being very comprehensible.
Report him the moment he crosses the line! I had to email him after he embarrassed me in class for literally no reason. PLEASE READ THE TEXTBOOK before class! He will call on you and will make you look stupid. However he's really good at explaining things. Answer the easiest question during class, that way he won't embarrass you.
Forget about the bad reviews about Bob Horn. His lectures are so engaging and he is a funny dude. Yes, he says some out-of-pocket shit but it's hilarious. He will call you out if you're not engaged during class or answer incorrectly so don't take it personally... he does it to everyone.
I simply love Prof. Horn. When I first read the reviews I was expecting the worst. However, I got to know him and he is simply the best. The class is not easy but he tries his best to put it as simple as possible. Read and try to participate cause he'll call you out. If you engage in class you'll be fine. Also, MC tests are harder than short answer
Don't listen to a bad review written about Horn. He is simply one of the best teachers I've had since high school. He is super engaging in class and tells you when a similar question will be on the test. If you go to class and take detailed notes there is literally no reason why you shouldn't get a good grade.
I loved this teacher and he knew what he was speaking about. However, if you dont go to class, youll fail. i was lazy and didnt go to classor do the readings and thats why i got bad grades. make sure to ask questions and pay attention
good professor but his tests did not match what he taught. the test grades counted for most of your grade and homework was only worth 1%he also did not put the grades into canvas and made you calculate your own grade. if you miss class you will be so lost. I would not take him again because tests were so hard but he is good at explaining things
