Personally, I dislike math (it's the subject I struggle most with), but I got the grade I expected. Bob's a really good & fair teacher. I learned much more from my TA though. This class shouldn't be too hard as long as you do the homework, go to the discussions, and ASK QUESTIONS!
He stresses notation a lot, which I wasn't expecting. Exams are in class, and they're pretty thorough. Not terribly hard, just thorough. Do the homework, you'll be fine.
my first calc class ever. He was very clear with explanations, otherwise he would go over again. He is very fair with the exam material and lets you drop enough quizzes and 1 exam so you can ace the course. If you want an A read the book and write down the examples he give in class.
this class is awful. he procrastinates on EVERYTHING, and clearly has no interest in teaching this class. i've heard he's good for calculus, but he's terrible for this.
Gotta love bob! Although I got a C in this class and still am stumped about much of the material, he was a great professor. You could tell he was very interested in teaching and he even gave us candy on the day after halloween!!
He was very clear in his explanations and very knowledgable about the subject. I figured that the class would be much more difficult than it is. I recommend him if you have to take calculus.
This was an OK class for me; math is my weakest subject so I had to put in a lot of effort to get a B. Bob's a really good teacher - good lectures and explanations. He's incredibly fair (dropped quizzes, no mandatory homework, etc).
Emphasis on understanding rather than just doing. Great professor.
Murphy is really fun! His tests r usually not hard. Do his homework, and you'll get a easy A. recommended
Great Professor. Fair grading scheme. Understanding is taught by him, not just how to pass a test.
Amazing professor. Teaches concepts extremely clearly. Grading is very fair.
He is a good teacher and always does a good job explaining the material in lecture. Some of the material you will completely understand in lecture but can be more puzzling when you look at it on your own. Overall very good prof. just be sure to study with old tests/quizzes.

Love Bob! He is super nice, and those quizzes & tests r quite easy lol
Best math teacher that I have ever had. He loves his job and will do anything to help his students. Use his past tests to study because some questions will reappear. I highly recommend taking his class!
He's a fantastic teacher. He teaches with such clarity that it's almost impossible not to understand the material. Love him!
During lecture he mostly just proves theorems, and he is very approachable in office hours. Even though the homework isn't graded, keep on top of it and you'll do better on quizzes and exams. All his old exams and quizzes are online, and he reuses the same type of questions. This class is do or die. I was happy with my A-. Take it with Murphy.
This course is extremely challenging for a student with average math skills. A's are only obtainable by students with natural born knowledge. I put in 15 hours a week and struggled quite a bit. Professor Murphy is outstanding however he will sometimes move very fast. More than clear in office hours, and teaches straight forward. exams never curved
kind and interesting
I LOVE HIM! He's such a nice professor! He explains things really clear, and the materials are really easy. Do old exams! they help a lot. I'm taking 231 with him this semester. Still love him!
EXCELLENT TEACHER!!!!! Best Experience that I had in my first semester of college with teachers. I'm so glad I ended up in his class. Very good at explaining the material. As long as you care about your grade, its impossible to do poorly in this class. AND HE'S SUPER NICE! :D
Really good teacher. Exams were way easier than with other Math 231 professors. Definitely pick him over anyone else that I know of. He's very helpful and has a sense of humor.
Make math interesting
Absolutely fantastic professor. His lectures are crystal clear because he has is able to break concepts down and explain them logically. He is very fair when it comes to quizzes/exams. I took professor Murphy for both calc 1 and 2 and my only regret is that he isn't teaching calc 3. In short, if you have the opportunity, take Bob Murhpy.
Professor Murphy is an awesome teacher. He is very clear in his teaching. His Calc 2 class is easier than calc 3. MAKE SURE TO DO THE HOMEWORK! Even though it isn't for a grade. His tests tend to stress the material covered in class, so make sure to attend all lectures.
Excellent.
I failed the first 2 exams and got a C+. It is not easy to turn your grade around, but the key to success if your struggling is to seek help and ask pertinent questions. The points only come from exams, quizzes, and final. Start preparing early, exams are full of pressure. If you are mediocre at algebra, polish it because the penalty is harsh.
I found myself enjoying math after having taken his class...I don't know how to feel about this. Regardless, he's an excellent professor!
Calculus is not an easy subject! He taught, but I had to go over a lot of information on my own. Actually, he completely skipped a chapter and left it for the class to do on their own. The class isn't that bad, though.
Murpheus = God walking among mortals who stretches squirrels in his leisure time...Take his class!!!!!
He was an excellent professor and really made it so that you could understand clearly. The material is hard so GO TO OFFICE HOURS, I learned the hard way.
He is awesome, soo easy to understand and explains everything he is doing, all the homework is optional, and he replaces your your worst test grade with the grade from your final (if its better so it will only help your grade)
Great Professor, one of the greatest teachers I've ever had, I recommend him to anyone who needs to take Calc!
Friendly professor, efficient teacher. Willing to help if necessary. If you stay on top of the material, you'll do fine. If you are having trouble, you can go to his office hours and he will gladly help.
He definitely knows the material really well. I highly recommend doing all the assigned homework even though it's not due. It can be a difficult class if you never had calculus before because the material moves pretty fast but as long as you keep up with the homework and attend lecture it is possible to get a decent grade. Also look at old quizzes.
Professor SHINES!! I am the student I am today because of him. He will go out of his way to explain things, and will be the fairest man you will ever meet. I HIGHLY recommend him, and I hope he can have the impact he had on me with you. If you are frustrated, hang in there and fight fight fight! His policy allows you to prove yourself on the final!
Excellent Instructor. Clear and Concise. Keeping up on homework is a must, but the exams/quizzes aren't that difficult if you do the homework, and ask questions. Best U of I instructor I've had so far.
The course itself is esay. He doesn't ask for homework so I've never done any. Great lectures. He's a good teacher. Exams are easy. I got a B- by midterm and hold it back to A at the end.
Perfect professor. Strongly recommend if you take math 220. Clear lectures, efficient, always ready to answer questions, humorous. 13 quizzes through the semester and you can drop 3 of them. 3 tests and a cumulative final, which means you can replace one of your test score by your final.
Great professor. I came in with no prior calculus experience and found him very easy to understand. He does a great job of explaining. If you want to do well in the class make sure you do well on tests and overall well on the quizzes. He drops a few of the lowest quiz scores. VERY HELPFUL and uses LOTS OF EXAMPLES.
Professor Murphy is awesome! I am happy to have had him as a professor. He explains everything clearly and is always there for help. Attending lecture is not mandatory, but it is extremely helpful. Tests and quizzes are very similar to the old ones so study those and you should be fine.
By far the best math teacher I've ever had. Every time he begins a new concept, he explains it thematically and concisely. If you pay attention, you basically have no choice but to learn. I went to a lot of his office hours, and if you ask the right questions, he will make you love calculus!
Excellent professor! Probably the best you can get for math 241 (he only teached 1 class this time, and I was in it). Calc3 is a hard class, especially towards the end- but his explanations are great, so it'll help lots. grading is straightforward- solely based on quiz and tests, with no hw to hand-in <3 this helps me actually study and ace it.
This professor is all over the place. He doesn't explain anything and doesn't know how to do the problems himself. Just the other day he stopped explaining a problem on the board because he didn't know how to do it himself. You have to teach yourself the material. Good luck on the impossible tests. Honestly, I'm smart okay, but this prof is imposs.
Calc I was a very tough class as someone who has not taken a Calculus course before. Murphy did, however, do a great job of explaining concepts with well thought out examples. As long as one listens with intent during class and COMPLETES THE HOMEWORK, he or she should have no problem getting the desired grade.
Really hard class, if you've never taken calc before, I recommend doing all the homework despite having 30 problems every day as this is a 5 hour course, and not take the previous tests lightly as he increases the difficulty each semester for each test. Overall though, he is a nice and helpful teacher, but many people will end up with C's or D's.
straight scale grading is rough
Math 220 is no doubt HARD. He's an amazing teacher though. To get the grade 1, DO ALL HOMEWORK, 2, REVIEW OLD TESTS AND QUIZES, 3, GO TO DISCUSSION. The final is the curve since it replaces your lowest test grade. Tests are tough but if you do your hwk and review old tests, you'll do fine. Be prepared to work for the A or B. Its doable though
His tests are usually straightforward and directly related to homework problems. He does, however, grade with a straight scale, which many students considered an obstacle to good grades.
Clear but not Helpful. Confused with problems himself sometimes. Tests are easy. Got perfect scores on all tests, quizzes, and finals.
He is really good. He love this job and clearly patient to his students. His the best math teacher I ever met. I like him.
Professor Murphy is amazing. I was intimidated by calculus and maths but had to learn it as a requirement for my major but I attended his class and now I'm minoring in Maths. Great professor. Very passionate while teaching and is very helpful, always. I'll highly recommend anyone taking calculus to take his class.
Great Professor! I took Calc in High School and did terrible, but I understood everything thanks to this man. Very fair, MUST do the homework. He is more than happy to help you outside of class as well. His only downfall: breaks more chalk than any normal man ever could.
He is upbeat and wants students to learn, but this class is impossible for someone who struggles with math in the first place. It is five days a week and a ton of hw. And sometimes there are two quizzes in a week, tue and thurs. he said that most of those who fail the first test fail the course. Final can replace the lowest test but no curving.
This class is sooo fair. The grading system is perfect, and theres barely tricks on tests. Just do hw and listen to his words. Hes so chilllll so you can just stop by and be like whats up? hes so cool and you would wanna be friends with him. Everyone already is. I wish he taught all my classes!!
Bob Murphy is truly a great lecturer. He is fantastic at explaining concepts and his in class examples were very helpful. Despite the fact that this is only Calc 1, it is not an easy class, but it is possible to get an A or B if you put in the time and do the homework. I came in with no prior calculus experience and received a B+.
OMG He's so enthusiastic about his job and he is definitely a good teacher! I didn't do much hw before mid-term cause I was struggling with my PSYC class so I got C, however I worked harder and ends up with an A!!!
Overall, Murphy is a nice professor, but you HAVE to do his homework. I have never taken calculus before, so it was challenging. Got a D on the first exam, but ended up with a B in the class. He does throw tricky questions on the exam so be careful and make sure you understand every HW problem
Crystal clear lectures. He makes sure you understand all formulas/theorems conceptually by deriving them in class. Some of my friends thought this was overkill, but I think it helps build a good foundation in the subject. It's not an easy class, but if you're willing to put in the work, you shouldn't have a problem getting the grade you want.
no homework. no mandatory attendance. easy exams.
Terrible, difficult, and unforgiving in most respects. Think again if you don't have experience with calculus, because there are better suited classes with more compensating instructors in the same course.
His lectures are great! However, the hw load is a little bit too much. TA sessions are not all helpful. So choose a good TA! Overall, this is a very good cal1 class and really help you get prepared for cal2.
Murphy is great, but the class itself is challenging. If you put in the time and effort, it will pay off. Do the homework and study. If you're confused, you can always approach him or go to office hours. It's also helpful to have a study buddy or a group.
Very good teacher. Extremely fair and helpful. The material is tough, but everything you need to know he clearly teaches in lecture. My TA was good too. Go to his office hours; he sincerely wants to help his students and will clearly answer any question you have. Use his website for old quizzes and tests, those help a lot.
Definitely the best Math teacher I've ever had. Believe me if u work hard in this class with his teaching to help, u'll be fine.
He is one of the best proffesors I've ever had. He has lots of office hours where he goes through confusing homework problem. Also the tests are not that difficult as long as you have been doing all of the recomended homework problems and review guides.
Miserable class, difficult material. Murphy is misleading with his lectures, and his exams rarely correlate to class. I would recommend another teacher or go to community college for calc if it is required.
He's a great professor, lots of office hours, good at what he does, and no mandatory homework. He moves really fast. however. I strongly suggest going to office hours. He's a really nice guy and has a sense of humor. He also doesn't curve so be ready for those exams.
Best math professor I have ever had.
Great teacher, he moves through a lot of material quickly but makes it seem simple and straightforward.
Course is not hard because he explains everything clearly in his lecture. Also, during his office hours, your can ask him the questions on quizzes or homework, and he will explain every detail, even calculating.
Class is average in difficulty (I never took calc in high school). Murphy DOES NOT curve, instead he replaces your lowest test grade with the final %. He lets you view his previous Quizes and Tests. This significantly helps improve performance on exams. Final exam is a bit easier then the midterms.
Do not take this class if you are not an engineer or a math major. His class is based souly on those few students who just understand the material at the get go. Anyone who just needs this class to fill a requirement I recommend finding another professor because you'll likely end up working your ass off 20+ hours a week just to fail.
He is awesome!!!!He explains everything really clear and the homework are useful. His lesson is really attractive and the professor himself is a very nice person!Don't know why his score is so low. Choose his class, you will love him!
He's really fair and the best math teacher I've ever had. If you have any problems go to office hours. He explains everything and anything you have questions about. His final also replaces your lowest test and I got a %56 on one test then got a %98 on the final so it definitely helps
Great prof and explains materials clearly!
Good lecturer, very helpful. Can go through material quickly, but if you go to office hours you will be fine
Murphy is one of those professors that obviously loves math. I like that he brought that passion to his lectures, making sure we really understand what's going on. He's my favorite calculus professor.
Very fast paced with teaching, but very helpful. He wants his students to succeed. Go to office hours, I promise it helps. Also, make SURE to read the book. Plus, he's hot so take his class ;)
Fantastic professor; the best I've had in the math department as of yet. His explanations were crystal clear and backed up with lots of example problems. Be warned though that his class is kind of tough. The quizzes are hard and worthy of being studied for. The tests are a bit easier but harder than the tests I took in Calc 2 and he doesn't curve.
One of the best calculus teachers I've had, started from the beginning and worked quickly but cleared everything up and I actually understood material instead of memorizing it. Amazing lectures and board work. Writes everything step by step. For quizzes and tests take advantage of all of the past quizzestests online - it's still a weed out class
Really helpful and easy course
Great Professor. Obviously very passionate about the subject and explains things amazingly. Very easy to get a hold of and get help. The Quizzes are pretty hard I must say. The exams are pretty straight forward and he provides all past exams on his website dating back to almost 6 years ago.
Really love Professor Murphy. He is very funny, and the he can cover the material clearly. Best Math Professor ever,
Really a nice professor I've ever had. He's so patient to students.
I never really understood why I was taking Calculus, but Murphy was pretty good. The TAs are no help at all
Excellent teacher, don't take his course if you plan on being lazy or assume high school calc guarantees you an A. The material he teaches will show up on tests and definitely the methods and examples from lecture will help. Always great at answering questions. He wants you to learn and will help you get there. Don't fall behind.
Solid teacher, but the material can get really abstract and makes you think. There isn't any assigned homework; the course grade is dependent on quizzes and tests so make sure to do all the homework even though it's not due for any points
his tests and quizzes are not easy, but questions similar to those given in his tests are similar to those in his past quizzes and tests. you can do well by studying. he gives you all his exams and quizzes since 2009. he is nice and good at explaining stuff, he will make sure you get it. no mandatory attendance. good professor. i hate math btw
He's one of the best professor in Math department! Very patient and really helpful!!
This class really makes you work for your grade. MURPHY DOES NOT CURVE. Even with a class average of 50 there was no curve all semester. Take advantage of the practice quizzes and tests online, they prepare you well for the real ones. Lecture and discussion are not mandatory but it is very beneficial to go, especially lecture. Office hours OK.
I was new to Calculus when I took this class, and he made it very easy to get into it. I was not going to class enough by the end of the semester, so I got a C. Probably would have gotten an A or B if I showed up.
Murphy is the math teacher I have ever had. He is a great lecturer, you need to work hard for the grade, but if you stay up to date and attend class you will be good. His previous quizzes are almost identical to the ones he gives out now. The prior exams also help a lot. One of the best teachers in the math department. You Da man murphy
Very difficult class. Even taking and passing AP calc in high school, this class was 10x harder. Half the class dropped out by mid-semester. Average grade of all 3 tests were D's. Very tough grader. He claims that doing the homework is essential for doing well, but the homework never helps on the tests. Dont take! Take at community college!
Very fair but strict in grading. Can get an easy B just by going to lectures.
challenging class, skips steps, goes by to fast
I did not go to class and that hindered me a lot. Go to his personal office hours, I have not heard anything good about the TA's. Do the assigned book work for practice.
For many people (at least for me), Calculus is a scary thing. Professor Murphy does a great job with teaching the course material. Unfortunately, he is aware of this, so the test and quizzes can be quite difficult. Just make sure you do the non-mandatory HW. The Final replaces your lowest test grade so make sure you study A LOT for it.
The thing about Bob is that he doesn't give homework because he feels you don't need it to pass his class. Attend all his lectures because he gives the hardest examples of problems you can encounter and then breaks them down. I enjoyed the class and got an easy A- simply because I diligently went to lecture. Office hours aren't necessary
The tests and quizzes ain't easy but he provided a lot of resources which means, you just have to work for it. The office hours really helped a lot. The textbook are only useful to complete the assigned homeworks (which I don't think are essential to pass the class). Just do all the past tests and quizzes and you'll be fine!
Murphy is a great person and a great professor. Tests seemed almost impossible. My advice is if you took calc in high school you might be ok, but if you only took pre calc and no calc, take this class at a community college!
Okay, of all the things you take from this review, just remember - *Do the homework.* Seriously. He gives you all the tools to do well, and just doing the homework and checking it over will make your test and quiz grades skyrocket. I got a D in the class the first time because I didn't do the work. Took it again and got a B+. Fantastic professor.
Murphy is a great professor! His explanation is very clear and easy to understand. You can find lots of practice exams and quizzes in his website and they're very similar to the actual exams and quizzes. Tests are not that hard as long as you put in effort to do the practice exams.
Great professor, but likes to test students on the intricacies that are conceptually difficult.
Love him so much!!! With an easygoing disposition .Explains calculus clearly in each lecture and has his own class Syllabus, which tells what u r supposed to learn and what the tough part is in each lecture. Gives a guidance about what to read! Such an organized and inspirational guy!Take his class!
Not sure why this class has such high reviews. Lectures are difficult to understand as he flies through material. Tests and quizzes are impossible. Puts terribly intricate problems on tests and quizzes that make your head spin.
A good math teacher is a very rare thing. Prof. Murphy is a teaching diamond in a lot of rough out there. I would've taken Math 220 online if I hadn't been able to get him. You'll do well only if you do the hw and go to lectures AND discussion. Be prepped for the 15 min. quizzes. Also, do not take without prior calc or precalc (Math 115).
Hard but fair. Excellent lectures and very helpful outside of class.
He is the best professor I can ever imagine! He is good at clarifying ideas, so you will definitely understand every knowledge after the lecture. In addition, he is ready to help, so feel free to email him anything that bothers you! The tests are very easy as long as you do the old tests and quizzes! Strongly recommended!!!
He's a pretty good professor. There were a lot of quizzes but there are old practice quizzes online that are the exact same. It is the same with tests. I haven't done any of the homework this semester and I am doing pretty decent because I go to my discussion and I take these practice quizzes/tests. I would recommend his class.
Easily the best math instructor I've had in my entire life. Explains things clearly and in a manner "a kindergartner could understand," which is how teaching should be done. Of course, have precalc taken care of before. Also, do the "optional" HW; without it, you will do poorly. Be prepped for time crunch quizzes and use the free math tutoring!
He's the best math teacher I've ever had period. He is very clear and concise. One thing that I would advise is don't slack on quizzes. That probably killed my grade in the end. I got B's on the midterms with about 3 days of work but a D in my quiz section (which is worth 1 midterm altogether).
Great Lectures and Most of the tests weren't too bad at all just gotta do the work
The professor is a great person. He tries to make sure everyone who whats to succeed succeeds. But it is up to you on how much your willing to work. This class is a lot of work.
The best math teacher I have ever had. His explanations are very clear and he breaks down difficult concepts in ways that are clear and understandable. However, he will make you work for your grade. I ended up with an A, but I had to put a lot of effort in. Definitely take Calc 1 with him if you truly want to understand the material.
Awesome teacher overall. If you put in the time and effort, he'll definitely help you out at office hours. Great lectures and very easy to talk to, and his grading process is very lenient overall.
He is definitely the best teacher I've had so far in two years! I dreaded math but ended up actually understanding all the concepts. I was quite intimidated coming into class at first, but by the end of the semester I left feeling confident with calculus. He definitely prepares you well for further calculus courses. Do well on quizzes!
Bob was one of the best professors I ever had. His lectures were engaging and he gives students all of the tools they need in order to succeed in his class, so long as they access them first. It is also important to note that regular attendance at office hours greatly increases one's chances for success.
As someone who doesn't really like Math, Bob Murphy is the best Math Teacher/Professor I have ever had. Although I did pretty average in this class grade wise, I felt I understood the material way better than I ever had before in any other math. This class is a perfect example of you get out what you put in.
He has online quizzes and exams from past semesters. USE THEM. I never read a page from the text book and I understood the material very well because of past exams and quizzes. He is very strict on grading but will make you think you rock at calc (until you get to calc 2 with horrible professors).
Very clear explanations and teaching.
Great teacher. Very patient whenever you went to him for a math problem, personal issue, or a regrade. His class is very easy to understand because he was using a very formal, standard way to break down every problem and those problems will appear in tests and quizzes, nothing unexpected. He also posts all previous tests online for you to practice.
Professor Murphy is a phenomenal educator. He provides both the resources and the insight necessary to master the material he covers. In a broader sense, he has a certain way about him that makes learning the subject he teaches (calculus 1) feel a worthwhile endeavor.
The test can be super hard. Get ready to do lots of practice.
By far the best math teacher I have ever had. Fantastic lectures that are actually enjoyable, tests are fair.
Just a great supporter and a really clear professor during lectures.
The best professor I have met till now.
Amazing lecturer. Passionate about math. Drops lowest two quizzes and will replace your lowest exam score with your final score. The exams are VERY difficult. Be prepared.
Great note provider, as long as you take the notes well, you will totally be fine. You can basically copy whatever he writes on the blackboard cuz it includes everything! Grading is super fair too. He replaces the final grade with one of your lowest midterms and still get to keep the final grade for final.
He is the best math teacher at UIUC. He made calculus so clear. Definitely take his class if you have a chance. However, because math220 is a 5 credit course, and he had so many stuffs to teach. Some students might think his lectures are too fast. But if you pay attention you will be fine. And really recommend to the past exams and quiz.
so great amazing teacher
Professor Murphy is a great Calc teacher! Genuinely cares and answers questions clearly. He goes over hard concepts in class. If you've taken Calc, it's probably an easy A. If not, go to lectures, do the homework, and go to tutoring for help. Do the practice quizzes/tests!! If you do well on those, you should do well on the actual test. Good luck!
The best math teacher in my life!!!! Love him soooo much!! Much more better than my math teachers in China. Bob is really careful and teaches calculus in really interesting way.
Arriving at the correct answer isn't hard, but getting credit is. Murphy makes calc clear, but his grading rubric is not. What level of work he wants differs from question to question without any warning. I regularly got over 90% of the answers correct, but would get a low C because he thought I showed unimportant steps.
Fantastic math professor, his lectures are extremely clear and concise and he was able to help me understand concepts that I have struggled to learn for years. His past exams are the key to passing this class, definitely use them. Wish he taught Calculus 2 as well because he would blow all the Calculus 2 professors out of the water.
He's such a responsible teacher that tried his best to give the lecture even during a heavily ill period of time.
Your grade is entirely based on tests/quizzes/final. Great and understandable lecturer. Office hours has always been extremely helpful. Quizzes and test are exactly like the past quizzes and tests. He has over 14 past quizzes and test for you to review. Do those and the suggested homework and there is no reason you can't pass or get an A.
Tests were very difficult, even with the hours of studying I put in. Quiz and test questions were far more difficult than the textbook problems and it was only through going to the discussion class that I was able to gain some insight as to what the tests would consist of. His lectures were not helpful either.
Murphy is a really good professor, and is SUPER clear what you have to do to do well in the course. Going to lecture is super beneficial and looking at his old tests and quizzes will definitely help. Honestly just put in the work to understand the concepts, and use his online tests and quizzes. Do that, and you'll be fine.
Murphy is one of the best math professors you'll ever find. He explains things concisely and clearly and reminds you of important things to note. Usually he even reminds you of how to do basic math. The tests and quizzes are mostly easy as long as you do the practice ones. Also, go to the review sessions! They have lots of them and they're helpful!
Be sure to take this class seriously. The tests can be scary because you only have 50 minutes to do 11ish problems, so if you don't know the material you will fail. However, office hours are extremely helpful (TA tutoring hours I didn't find as helpful) and I was able to pass the class without even taking calculus in high school. Great professor!
Show up to lectures and practice old tests and quizzes.
Great professor!
He is always so prepared. Very nice professor and I would like to take his class so much.
Murphy was a great guy to learn from and listen to. I personally did not do as well as I would've in the class because I underestimated its difficulty thinking AP calc is practically the same. I did better as the year went on and I realized you need to do past quizzes and exams and then your basically set.
I hit a bout of depression and this was the only class that I actively wanted to show up to. The practice exams and quizzes were super helpful because they let you practice pretty much the exact concepts that you'd be tested on, but don't bother with discussion or book work unless you need extra help. Mr. Murphy was a very engaging lecturer overall
Professor Murphy is one of the best math lecturers I have had. It clearly shows in his teaching his passion for math. He explains things very clearly and with the practice problems he does the concepts are easy to grasp. His quizzes and tests are modeled after old ones which are available. He is very kind and helpful after class also.
If you've done Calc AB in high school and understand the material, the class is an easy A. Professor Murphy doesn't use WebAssign and usually skips sections that wont be of use later on in school. All the stuff he does in class is uploaded to his personal website. There is no mandatory homework. Not Recommended if you're a Math major.
Professor Murphy is by far one of the best professors I have had. His class is difficult but if you are willing to put in the work, you will do well. Pay attention in lecture and use his past exams and quizzes to study.
Dr. Murphy is one of the best math instructors Ive ever come across. He clearly knows his material and does an AMAZING job during lecture. He made calc concepts clear and easy to understand. Make sure you study for the quizzes and exams, though. Fortunately he posts past exams and quizzes you can study from. Would definitely take again.
His lectures were pretty boring, and I didn't really find lectures that helpful, test were never too bad, very average class with an average professor.
He is the best math professor ever! His grading policy is pretty nice! I found his lecture very helpful!
Mr Murphy is the best Math teacher I have ever met!!!!! He is very logic and can explain things in a simple but understandable way. He is fully prepared for his class. Anyway, he is a my favorite math teacher and hope I can take his class again in the future!!!
I guess the best part about Prof. Murphy is that he gives you all the resources you need to excel in his class on the course webpage. So instead of going to Chegg or Khan Academy I had access to all the problems sets with solutions that I ever needed. If you have the option to take his class and want an A, just do the stuff he has on his webpage.
His lectures are so convoluted and confusing that students rarely understand what is going on in the class. He consistently recommends that you complete the homework (that you often have to learn on your own) just to be faced with test questions that are exponentially more difficult. Further, he is clearly oblivious to when students are struggling.
Best math lecturer every studied under
Hardest math class I've ever taken. His lectures are not bad by any means, but the only way to prepare for his quizzes and tests is by looking at examples from his previous MATH 220 and 221 classes. Homework completely misses the point compared to tests. Quizzes and tests are another level of difficult compared to lecture and homework.
You'll have to put in a lot of time to get an A in this class. Missing a lecture will definitely set you back a bit. This was Bob's first time teaching this so the curve didn't fit the class super well and there wasn't much to look back on. The tests are much harder than hw and quizzes, also he didn't adjust for the strike at all which screwed me
Super hard class but he can explain well cor the short amount of class time
Be careful. This is a tough class. Do not take chemistry 102 at the same time. Study his past exams for at least 20 hours, it helps. His exams can be EXTREMELY difficult, but that is calculus here. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE HIS CLASS!
Very nice guy. I wish he taught more advanced calc too.
Murphy is a great professor. He is exemplary at giving other methods of solving problems besides the book, and is very concise and clear on his explanations. If you read the textbook and study the past quizzes and tests, the material and exams arent as tough as everyone makes them out to be. Make sure to go to all the lectures, as they are useful.
Best Math professor I've ever had. In high school I always got an C- on Math, but Murphy's course gives me an A and helps me regain my confidence. True the average is 60%, but that's because those who never study get 0 out of 100. In fact, most can get 85+ (even 100) on every test. Attending lectures & doing old test will ensure you at least an A-
Professor Murphy is great. He is very knowledgeable about his material which makes it easy to understand during lecture. His exams are very difficult but he provides you with past quizzes and tests that you can use to practice. If you want an A, you definitely need to put in the work.
Easily one of the hardest math classes I've ever taken. The course is aimed at Engineering and Math majors which implies that it is tough to begin with. The homework is very tedious and is not nearly as hard as the quiz and test questions. Best way to prepare for those are by looking at his old tests and quizzes. Class is hard to even pass.
Bob Murphy is not only the pinnacle of the mathematical mind. He is also perhaps the most superb human being mankind has available. From his chalk saturated T-shirts, to his affinity to guzzle water mid lecture. There is currently no doubt in my mind or the collective opinion of the UIUC student body that Bob Murphy is an immortal calculus deity.
Bob Murphy is pretty solid. Like this man knows how to lecture and give some practice material. Take him if you get the chance because you will actually learn.
Best Professor ever. He can really make math interesting even for those who hate it. Grading policy is clear, and he's welling to help. He answered all my weird questions, many of which are math problems irrelavent to class. By the way, you don't need to purchase (super expensive) access code only if you're in his section. Choose him !!!!!
While Professor Murphy may be incredibly smart, that does not define him as a professor. The grading in the class is 80% tests, 20% quizzes. The class average for tests (out of 700 students) remains at a 60% even as more and more people drop the class throughout the semester. Don't expect to pass this class coming from a public school education.
Murphy is not a good lecturer. Moves too quickly and the problems covered in class are mere childs play compared to our tests and quizzes. The textbook is also pretty difficult to understand. Lectures need to be drastically improved. The tests and quizzes are 2x hard as the homework and discussion problems. Wanna pass? Ditch lecture, use YouTube.
Bob Murphy is an awesome teacher! He works at a very fast pace though, so you have to be prepared to write notes quickly and re-read them for understanding after class. He is generous with office hours and will stay after to help you if you need it. Get to know him because he's great to go to for help. 10/10 recommend his class. I learned a ton!!!
One of the best Math Calculus teachers I have Ever had. He does go fast but all you need to do to Ace the class is repeatedly to his past quizzes and exams until you get all problems and you are GUARANTEED to Ace the exams
Murphy is absolutely an amazing professor not because of how he teaches in the lectures but because he posts all the lecture notes on the internet. Besides, preparing yourself with the past quizzes and past exams before the tests and there is no way you can't get an A because all the problems are directly drew from the past with slightly changes.
Great calc teacher. Made the class interesting, and the material was well described and easy to understand. The access to past tests/quizzes made studying easy, was an awesome resource. He was a great lecturer who made the points clear and the lectures funny with occasional jokes. Would definately reccomend
A very cool professor who teaches perfectly in his lectures. This is a very test-heavy class. He's very organized and wants you to succeed given that you put in the effort. His quizzes and tests might be difficult, but he has all of his past exams posted on his website (literally from his 10 years of teaching) and they're all pretty much the same
No assignments or homework and your entire grade depend on the 12 quizzes, 3 midterms, and the final exam. That being said, his lectures are very informative and you can tell he cares that you learn the content. He's very generous in grading and sets you up for success given that you use his resources efficiently and actually put in work.
Murphy is a cool guy and good teacher for the most part. However, if you do not have several hours a day to devote to his class, don't take him. His classes are not easy. They require a lot of time and effort. Taking other hard courses at the same time is not wise. Only graded on quizzes and tests, no homework.
Very clear lectures with every necessary math step written for note purposes. Will always answer questions and does ask questions to the class to ensure people are not lost. Genuinely helpful and cares during review/office hours. Gives a decade worth of practice tests/quizzes. Made me enjoy calculus having never taken it before. Take his class!
You don't have to go to lecture but I would highly recommend that you do!!! Going to lecture will save you time because then reading the textbook will be more of a review of what was covered in lecture. DO OLD TEST/QUIZZES. That's how I studied for tests and quizzes. If you put in the effort you'll get a good grade.
Murphy has got to be one of the best math professors at U of I. His lectures are extremely clear and beneficial. He improved my mathematical style significantly. Thank you Murphy!
He was really understanding throughout all that was happening during the COVID-19 crisis. Hes also very easy to follow along during lecture and is helpful when you have any questions along the way(:
Murphy explains concepts in many different ways, his lectures are very insightful, the class is hard, you will need to study(study for the the first exam pls) but he's a great teacher, pay attention in class and ask questions. He makes jokes, very funny guy, breaks his chalk all the time, rides a bike- he's cool like that. empathetic and chill :)
One of the best professor's I've ever had. He was pretty funny every now and then in lectures, and hw was optional but I found that doing it was very helpful for succeeding in the class. He posts all his quizzes and exams from past years on his website which is a huge help for studying for exams since they're pretty much the same.
Had him for Calc 1 in Fall 2018 (first semester of freshman year). Excellent professor. Struggled the first 2 or 3 weeks of the course, but that was most likely because I was adapting to the workload of a real university course.
Professor Murphy along with his TA are very responsible. They teach lectures very clearly and post lots of example questions to let up practice. The previous tests help prepare for the exams a lot as well. Homework is not graded but as a practice as well.
It was after many years when I heard people from other classes or universities complain about how difficult Calculus is (if you have no prior experience with it) did I realize how great is professor Murphy's teaching. He really explains the nature of Calculus well enough for those who know nothing about it. I'll thank him forever.
