Contrary to the previous comments, I found Mr. Newell to be a very helpful instructor in spite of the fact that I am not a female. In fact, I received an A for the class. If you have any desire to learn to express yourself properly in your writing, I high

Don't ever take this guy. His standards are ridiculous. I never got anything lower than an A on a paper in my college career until he gave me a low C on my first paper in that class. When you ask him a question, he tells you to go to his stupid web page.
I got a B on a paper and it wasnt easy to get it but he is very fair. Too many people dont want to work because who wants to take comp 2? To them, he's impossible because they dont try very much. Thats their problem, not his
His class is hard, but I expected that. I started the class hoping for just a C but I have a B right now. I think some people in class think he's unfair b/c he holds you to his rules.
Not as easy as comp 1, but not that bad if you do what he asks. Don't try to do anything at the last minute. It kills your grade
As an older student, I can't believe the gripes the younger kids have today. I think he's tough, and I think he could help out more, but he's not bad at all. I'm sure the comments from a few days ago are from my class. He's bad because they don't work.
I strongly agree with all the negative comments here. Although brief, they are very true. His standards are ridiculous and if you want help you have to go to the internet. I recomend Hubscmidtt as an alternative.
Mr. Newell kept himself very busy during class trying to help each student with proper sentence structure, paper focus, MLA format, and etc. He was energetic. He did an excpetional job showing me how to use MLA, and the in class exercises were very contructive.
Mr. Newell did a good job with this class. The assignments weren't too easy or too hard. He tells exactly what he wants. So I recommend Mr. Newell!
I enjoyed this class, and learned a lot from it.
I came into this class with dread and fear of failure. I came out with confidence in my ability and a B. The information I needed to write better was easily found. Questions were answered quickly. I think more direction about what was wrong with essays may have helped me do a little better.
There were times where it was difficult to determine what was wanted in the begining. Things were handled fairly and well. Once the communication hitches were ironed out it was alot better.
Great teacher! Very clear on all instructions.
Bob did a great job at making sure the class was together as a class and working on the same week. Also, the assignments were made clear, the dates in which they were due, and how he wanted them done were also very clear. This class was easy to get through.
Probably the best English class I've ever taken.
I thought Mr. Newell was very clear with his instructions, and had quick response time to questions.
Having not been in school for more than ten years, I was afraid of writing/english. Bob is a good instructor and helped me get better at writing a paper. Very informative class, I hope I can have Mr. Newell as a teacher again.
The Class was a little scary at first,, but once i got the hang of it it was fairly easy.
Although this class was on-line, he made it very easy and I enjoyed having him as a teacher.
At, first I tought this class was going to be difficult to learn, but when I got the hang of the class it was pretty easy. Overall im happy with the grade I recieved in this class. Mr. Newell was very helpful. I really enjoyed him as a teacher.
Ineresting class with interesting reading involved. He seemed to grade tough, but made me work for improvement.
This class was so much fun. I loved talking on the boards! The boards were my favorite part.
I really enjoyed this class and thought Mr. Newell was a GREAT professor :)
This was a web class. I never met him in person. He did convey class assignments clearly.
Very well taught class.
I think that it would be helpful for the students to meet with him personally at the beginning of the writing process.
Sorry, Mr. Newell I never got to meet you in person. I really enjoyed your class and it has made me excited about continuting three semesters from now. I have to finish high school and then I'll see you next fall. Had a great time taking your class thank you.
Excellent teacher. Graded very fairly and explained how to fix what was wrong. Always willing to help. I'd definately take another class with him.
It was a pleasure being in his class.
I am sure that Mr. Newell is hot, most older guys are, but his performance as a teacher is what really caught my eye. I would love to take more classes with him, his insight and comments really aided in my writing ability, I appreciated the feed back. All in all a nice guy.
I really enjoyed this online class. At first, i was not to enthused about having to take another writing course, but I really grew to like it. My teacher was very helpful by helping me out with my weaknesses and his assignments were very clear.
Great eng 101 class...better than any high school english class!!
was hard to understand
The instructor did not show me what i had done wrong on any of my work just gave me short statements of what I needed to work on. He did not tell me whether or not I had corrected the problems or gotten worse and I feel that if he had bothered to do that much I could have done better in the class.
I think that Mr. Newell is tough but you just have to really keep up and pay attention to your assignments.
I took Mr Newell's online. He was very instructive. I would like to take one of his courses in person sometime. It would be more interesting that way.
The online English 120 class with Professor Newell was a complete pleasure. Prof. Newell was very clear with the assignments and what he expected out of the class. He was helpful by offering advice for the next essay along with the grades. I enjoyed having him as a teacher.
Great class, really enjoyed the movies. Actually learned quiet a bit and ya. Teacher is awesome and made the class enjoyable for all.
Your class was great!
The class was difficult for an internet course. It believe it would be better as a traditional course. Having said that Mr. Newell did the best he could with what was available.
The class was very informative and I was able to keep up on a busy schedule. Mr. Newell answered what questions I had with great clarity and insight.
I really enjoyed the material; film and the process of making it takes on a whole new loof for me. Everything was pertinent to the class.
I really enjoy going to class. I like the projects we do. I understand what he is teaching and overall I believe the rest of my class is on the same page and working well together.
Worst Teach Ever.. No one take him..
What a waste of time this guy was to take.

Took online a while back. It was a good course and I did learn a lot. Feedback was great and he did offer a lot of advice. Online classes are harder, but if you stay on top of it he will reward you. I liked him a lot!

Took Comp I online, enjoyed it. Passed easily as a high school student and requested him again once I was in college.
was a little out there but easier than expected
Daily responses insanely easy (well assuming you are reading). Stupid jokes but keeps the class lite.
Great selection of movies. Pans Labyrinth!
I do not feel like I came out of this Composition class with anything new.
not hard and pretty nice overall
Very good teacher. Only required like 7 essays throughout the whole class and they were intersting topics! Also, the disscusions and stories you had to read were actually interesting. He was very helpful and overall I loved the class and am taking him again for Comp 2!
This guy was the man. He had strict rules but we are in college now and if your not ready to be an adult then do not waste your time taking his class, but if you are prepared to do the reading and learn something new then this is up your alley
pretty decent teacher. offers conference days before the midterm and final to make sure your doing it right. sometimes he requires a half page and will tell to its not long enough and when he requires a page its too long.
he is difficult. not willing to help and could care less about his students.
I took Comp 2 online. It was far from my first online class.I am getting a really bad grade. I'm still in his class. He doesn't care about his students.I can't understand his instructions and when you ask him he is rude and tells you to reread instructions. Not helpful at all. STAY AWAY!!! You will regret taking his class.
He's an awful instructor. There's not a whole else to say other than to avoid him at all costs.
I took Lit 130 with Mr. Newell. He is definitely strict and expects nothing but hard work and dedication out of his students. He's pretty laid back, usually comes to class in a button down shirt and jeans. He has "Conference Days" and "Blackboard Days" which help break up the daily grind of the semester. I'll be taking another class with him! :)
He has even said so himself, that he is much harder and more strict in his Comp classes. But he is such an awesome teacher. He is definitely laid back and he tries not to overwhelm his classes with a ton of reading assignments all the time. One reading assignment per class. His midterm is kind of difficult, but if you go to the conferences it helps
His literature class was really laid back and pretty awesome. But his mid-term and finals are horribly difficult
Extremely easy. I took film online and he spells out what he wants. I ended up with a 99%. Just make some slight effort, which I'm sure a lot do not. This course is not hard by any means. And yes he is picky about proper spelling and grammar, but it is college so it SHOULD be proper.
Very easy and really laid back. Easy to understand and know what things are due.
loved it!
Very hands off. I didn't feel as if I learned a thing from this class. We were given handouts to refer to and that was it. He wouldn't really explain what the problem areas were and he wouldn't email back to answer questions.
As far as total writing, this class was pretty easy. He only required 4 two-page papers throughout the semester. The other weeks were essay discussions. However, you must follow his guidelines TO THE LETTER or your grade will suffer. I got an F on one paper, and I'm still not totally sure why. Tough grader. Not helpful.
He wasn't clear on why I got the grades I did. He hardly replied to emails and was very confusing when he did. I wouldn't advise taking his class if you don't feel you are a great writer.
I ended up liking this Intro to Lit class more than I thought I would have. Newell was always engaging the class in discussion and expects a lot from his students. If you don't keep up, though, you won't do well. I recommend taking one of his classes, he's an interesting guy.
I have had Mr. Newell for several classes and I absolutely love him! He teaches English, so of course there is a lot of writing involved, but he is pretty lenient in his grades. He is very helpful if you take the time to ask him questions and get his feedback. He is by far my favorite teacher on campus.
Was not clear with how or why i earned the grades i did. Not easy to correct a deficiency when it isn't identified.
This guy might be a good teacher in class, but online he is lacking. I have not learned much except writing a lot of discussions. Basically don't take him if you take online courses.
I like him as a person - he's pleasant and interesting. His lectures were pretty decent because we often had engaging and easy conversations for the most part. What I didn't like is that during lectures or feed back he often wasn't really clear and or helpful and could even make things a bit more confusing - even when asked to elaborate.
Bob is a really cool guy! Attendance isn't mandatory but if you skip often, like I did, you won't do well. Show up every day and you pretty much get an A. He's the kind of person that likes face-to-face interaction, so office hours are crucial. His teaching style is awesome and the movies and stories are great. No tests and only homework is to read
Bob is a super cool guy who really wants to hear what his students have to say. The movies he chooses are really interesting! If you go to class and participate you'll get an A. Every grade besides the papers are in class, so if you don't go you won't pass. I'm definitely taking his other classes!
Favorite teacher! Class was fantastic, great discussions!
Extremely awkward as a person. Rude, rude, rude. I enjoy the material in the class, but sad I have to drop it because of the teacher. Try to find someone else if possible.
Absolutely would not recommend this teacher. He seems to enjoy watching you struggle rather than helping you learn. If you don't know the answers to his (entirely too specific) questions, he will sit and wait 10+ minutes until someone "remembers" the answer instead of trying to help us, or rephrasing the question. Not much of a teacher imo.
Bob Newell is the kind of teacher who makes you think outside the box. He expects you to participate, but let me be very clear, if you do not participate , the class is going to be very boring and it will drag on . You have to show up to learn the material. I had him for LIT-130 and that is the reason i took his film class. Hes really good.
This class was amazing and I would take it again in a heart beat. The reading material was sometimes odd but good. Other material was interesting and made our class get involved. Don't get me wrong there is lots of reading for this class, but it is not a lot at one time. Participate in class discussion, it will help you out. Overall, Bob was good!!
The class consists of 8 movies with a discussion after each. My biggest tip: In the discussion don't rest on simple answers. The man requires thought out work. I took his MOD 1 course, I only asked one question during the entire semester and was basically scolded for asking. Do not skip movies! Never take again!
I took his online course because my hectic schedule would not allow me to go to the Lake Land Campus every day, and I knew that some days I would not be able to do any homework. This is the wrong class for that. I'm sure if you stay at home 24/7 with no responsibilities this class will work for you, but if you don't, this class isn't for you.
I took his online HUM150 class MOD. I. He grades easy on the discussions. My main tip is to get full credit you have to post them 24 hours apart. He wants you to log in multiple times and checks the time stamp. Also, he grades the final paper super hard. It is 7 pages long. You have to contact him on the phone or in person to get full credit.
This class was by far my favorite. Reading the stories is key. Come PREPARED. I cant stress that enough. If you participate in class discussions you will understand things better. NO Test. Just a final project at the end over four stories of your choice. He makes you think outside the box and makes you get involved! Great Teacher! Great class!
He was a great teacher. His class enjoyable, and he was able to very clearly explain directions as well as what he was looking for on certain homework assignments.
This class is super easy! He is a great teacher. All he assigns is a story to read for the next class period and during class you will analyze the reading in class with the other students. He has open discussion and is very open to everyone's ideas. As long as you show up to class, you'll get a good grade. He did not even have a real final!
Made a minor mistake last year on my paper and he gave me a 0 out of 20 and refused to cooperate when I tried to fix it.
If you do what he asks, you'll pass. There are little "bell work" assignments at the beginning of most of the classes, so if you don't show up, you won't pass. He is a pretty good teacher all together. He does have the time to give you feedback, but he prefers to do it in person, it's just easier that way. One of the easiest classes I've taken, 97%
This is an online class, so you'd think he would answer any questions you had through an email. You'd also think he'd make his emails a lot more clear. Nope. If you have any question at all, it could be the simplest of questions that any teacher would have no problem answering through an email. He would tell you to come into his office. Pointless
Bob's class was the easiest course I have ever taken. I had him for intro to lit, and I got an A+ on every assignment, including the midterm. I was working a full-time job while enrolled in Bob's class, and I still managed to get everything done.
Is an unforgiving professor, absolutely no cooperation in class. What he says is law and there is no middle ground. Structure asked for papers is cluttered. Class is time demanding based on his curriculum.
I struggled at first, but once I reached out & meet with him, I realized I was just over thinking it. I was able to find all movies at local library or Netflix. Just do the work and be active within the assignments. As a Humanities credit I actually enjoyed this class which I didn't expect going in but he offered a good perspective.
I took his Into to Film class and absolutely loved it!! He brought a great energy to the class and made me feel welcomed to be there! Only had class once a week and the film took up majority of class! Assignments due once a week and amazing extra credit opportunities towards the end of the year! Suggest taking this class for any art credits!
This was an online class and he was unwilling to help at all. I reached out several times asking for guidance and the answer was to read the syllabus. I am an adult learner in my last semester before graduating this is the worst online class I have ever taken in 4 years.
Awful. Grades on very specific points and is extremely picky. Worst professor I have had at Lake Land. If he says a paper needs to be 1.5-2 pages, you better write 3-4. I was meeting all requirements and still only managed a 75%.
Mr. Newell is a great teacher. He spends the beginning of the class with a few notes, and then we watch and discuss the movie. He does a great job making sure everyone is involved and giving students the opportunity to get points. The small papers each week are easy. Just watch the movie and take notes from his power points, and you'll be fine!!
This is probably the easiest class I have ever taken. Do the reading assignments or you won't be able to complete the reading check. Be on time - if you're late then you will not know the questions. He won't repeat them. Follow the canvas day instructions and do the written assignments. Participate in class discussion. So so very easy.
I took Bob's online HUM 150 course. I don't really like films, so having a mandatory watch list was different. You are graded on each film. Some of the films either have lecture notes or a short story associated with it. Make sure you review these in conjunction with the film. He provides you with office hours and he responds to emails.
There were a number of times he counted off for things that made no sense. It seemed like he just wanted to feel like he was teaching something, but there was no feedback. The one time I tried to ask why he counted off, I got a snarky reply back. He comes across very arrogant. Just assume you need to write a thesis for every answer you give him.
Be prepared to participate in class as the grade is heavily based on in-class discussion. Overall, he was a good professor, and he really wanted people to grasp and understand the material. Be ready to read short stories, watch movies, and analyze everything in between. He is a very nice guy, and I would recommend him if you need a fine arts class.
Since we are online this year, all we are doing is watching 6-7 movies and either taking a quiz or writing a paper about that movie. There are also little stories that are usually about that movie. Make sure you pay attention to the movie and read the story before taking the quiz or writing the paper. Quizzes are heavily weighted.
I enjoyed this class. I took it as a summer course though and was not ready for the amount of time it took as I also had a full time job. We watched two full length movies each week and then had to post discussions about each movie with comments back to other students.
Took it online and regretted it as he required you to spend your own money to purchase every single movie/ documentary that the class reviewed and majority of the movies picked weren't even memorable. Nice guy and passed the class, but nothing interesting stands out when I think of the class
10/10 would not take again. boring course material and he never explains what he wants you to do for papers.
Just go ahead and take the essay option for the unit assignments. I had five pages of notes for just one film that were completely pointless to take. Everything I learned that I was sure would be on the quiz was not. The quiz had the most random specific questions. Just make an essay outline and brainstorm as you watch the film. Never again.
Instructions clear but confusing at first. I took the movie class & u do a lot of writing for discussion posts, replies and a final paper. Pay attention to due dates. The 1st post is due 2 days ahead of the posted due date so people don't wait until the last second to start posting since u need replies. Overall not bad class just writing intensive
No clear rubrics are given. For example, you don't see how many points you can lose per error. Ask him specifically if your topic is approved because he will not tell you. Even if you submit your sources and what you plan to do with them, he won't let you know that there's a problem until it's too late. The grading criteria is never clear. At all.
Graded very hard on my my analysis' of the movies. The feedback he gave was not helpful at all. Movies are awful to watch besides a few of them, thought this would be an easy class to take but it was the opposite. Avoid taking this class if you can.
The class doesn't offer much direction or instructing. You are expected to know what he expects of you as far as writing papers and grades harshly. If you are late for any assignment for any reason he will not accept it at all. There is a book but he never references it or mentions it besides in the syllabus.
Throughout the class all you do is write and watch films that aren't very interesting. It overall was a very easy class but when it comes to the final paper you have to write over a single movie, he grades you like he doesn't believe in papers that are worthy of being an A. You have to start discussion posts 2 days before they're due or lose 20%.
