I took Bob's class again. I mean there is something he is trying to say and he keeps saying it. Be prepared to think. A lot of people either love him or find him painful.
At least twenty-five students dropped! You couldn't figure out what he wanted...metatexting...questioning...tutoring. Unbelievable. He's a very nice man, but NO ONE is getting his message. I feel kind of sorry for him, but he'll ruin your semester.
nearly impossible to figure out what he wants from you (metatexting?!? still don't know what that is). a ton of work. discussions are all over and rarely helpful. if you're looking for a political opinion forum, take his class.
My class ended up with about 8 students at the end of the semester. You will be miserable with all the writing he assigns and the out of school tutoring you have to do. BUT if you want a class that really challenges you and makes u question go for it.
He is very unclear and very demanding. It seemed more like a class on politics than English. I still have him and I don't think I'm going to make it. :-( TOO MUCH READING ABOUT LITERARY THEORY!!!!
Do NOT take him for Pursuits. Some of the work on literary theory is useful, but most of it is too hard to understand. He talks about metaphysics, not enough focus on actual literature. He assigns way too much work for class, too.
Students who might have graded him low must not have gotten the process yet. It will come and you will see why he was so important to your education. This grading system is pretty stupid though. The teacher is good if s/he is "helpful" and &q
Those metatexts drove me nuts, other than that, he made me think and nearly drove me crazy at the same time. Not to bad at some points though.
this guy bases his class off of The Matrix. He's completely nuts. This class has a paper due ever week. And on top of it you have to do

Listen Up! BOB WHITNEY IS THE MAN!! You shouldn't consider yourself college material if you can't hack one of his classes. For true thinkers ONLY.

He is challenging, but worth it.

Although at first I was frustrated in Bob's class, I must admit that he changed the way I write and think about writing. His class has definitely made a difference in the way I teach writing. His class is well worth the time and effort.
He expects you to push yourself. It might be hard but you end up somewhere u wouldnt be without his help. Writing is easier for me now.
Teaching Basic Writing is one of the most exciting courses I ever took. We became a community, did personal writing, and shared our work. We read 'theory' of language and education, and wrote responsively. Made me think!
Bob is a great teacher. He taught me a lot about writing and reading this semester. You just can't be afraid to learn and you need to have an open mind.
Bob pushed me to take my writing to a new level. After his class, my writing was changed-elevated to a higher octave. I cannot thank him enough for challenging me to think differently.
I took Bob's grad. rhetorical theory class and must say it was an epochal moment in my evolution/progression as a thinker, a writer, a seer, and a developing teacher of all of these. It was by no means an EASY class, but what WORTH doing ever is?
Bob made me look at my writing, and myself, in a different way. That shouldn't be easy, and it wasn't. But that doesn't mean it wasn't well worth it. Def a professor to take if you want to expand your horizons.
Without a doubt, one of the most challenging courses of my 18 years in academia, but certainly the most rewarding. I'm definitely not the same person I was coming into this class, and I'll be a better teacher because of it.
Thanks Bob...without you I could never had believed in the power that lies beneath
Bob made me think, write, and read from a different perspective. It changed the way I think and write and live. I know it sounds extreme, but it's true.
Easy to get an A if he thinks you agree with every word he says. Dare to disagree, and he picks you apart in front of everyone. He graded me on my political views, called me a **** and a fascist on a regular basis. Taught me not to speak my mind.
weirdo ,unfair grader, and semester killer spr 03
It was hard but well worth it. He taught me alot
One of the most intellectually challenging courses I ever took. Prof. Whitney will inspire you to think radically different from the way you do now - especially about reading and writing. He is an ex-hippy type of guy, and very brilliant.
I LOVE BOB! One of the best courses ever, taught us how to think harder, question ourselves, become more of a critical thinker, guides you to confront societial issues, become a better writer- become a better person- take his courses!!
very openminded and willing to listen to what you have to say, even if it is from left field
I liked professor Bob, he was cool. He took thinking to another level. I recommend him to all those students who are willing to think at the level which he teaches.
Bob changed my life. Take his courses if you can. If you can't, you're missing out...
he is only gonna give you a good grade if you continue to agree with his ideals, he really doesn't care about your opinion as much as passing his own along
he does challenge you with his method of what he calls "real writing" but it is a good course and he doesn't give test
Don't let him tell you he doesn't have an agenda. He's trying to make you think like him, but that's okay, just make sure to go beyond that though. Mind blowing class, really nuts. Draining though, tiring, you need a vacation after awhile. Not too much work, a lot of reading though, and THINKING!
he makes you go to another level of writing. he makes you think and write about what we read. he teaches us how to write from uncertainty.
I agree with the previous poster. He has communist political beliefs. He is not very helpful and gives vague instructions. Be very afraid and stay away from this nutcase.
Things you will hear in Pursuits with Bob: "Doubt" "Uncertainty" "Disruption" "Dude, ever see the Matrix?"...Awesome class, but be prepared to have your mind blown...Lots of reading, but worth it for all you English major nerds
Bob is a cool teacher, but is extremely hard to impress. All we do in class is talk, and sometimes write. But his homework assignments are "writing from uncertainty". Its a pain in the a**. The key to doing well in his class is ask a lot questions and answer them.
How lame are students who call teachers "communists" when the teacher challenges students' brainwashed, repetitive non-thinking robotism? Whitney's a great teacher. He made me a much better writer and person. If you dont want your thoughts challenged, why go to college? Go back to your TV.
Dr. Whitney is the best and worst teacher I have ever had. My life took on new direction, but he destroyed my ability to write. He says that he wants you to develop revolutionary thoughts but your grade depends upon agreeing with his ideology. You will learn but you won’t pass the course.
Write back, or silently suffer how others "write" you. This course gave me the courage and place to write back and become intellectually "present" in the world. It has made writing more difficult, because that's what thinking is: difficult. But it's also empowering. Choice: live awake or asleep.
Bob is an amazing teacher because he challenges the way we all view education, learning, society, government, etc. The class was hard as hell, but it has forever changed the way I write and read.
imma be honest as possible...bob really takes u to another level but doesnt grade fair.. he makes u tutor....he ruins ur weekends by making u write metatexts which make any sense when writing.heres a tip confuse urself on paper and you ll get a good grade.and do me a favor tell him the matrix is fak
Take him, even if you won't agree with him- learn from him. He wants you to disagree. I have never met a professor who cares so deeply for his student's intellectual development. This class has infected every aspect of my life. Thank you Blackboard Bob!
Oh my God, this guy should only teach grad students. "Go deeper" He wants you to find something in the readings that only his level of literary experience can reach. I withdraw, I got panic attacks. Nothing I did was right. He is out there.Freshman beware!!!
This was the toughest, most beneficial, class of my life. He's not for wimps or students who won't let go of their stale ideas. If you hang in 'til the end you'll never think the same way about literature, government, or society again. Definitely the hardest working professor on campus.

By far, the best teacher at Montclair State. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with what he has to say, he urges you to think of the box and challenges everything you previously thought. This guy is for REAL learners who aren't affraid to THINK.
if you voted 1 for anything on him, then you're just not devoted to english. he takes you to the extreme, it's absolutely mind boggling, it's insane, it's great and painful and amazing. it's the hardest class i've ever taken, and no he doesn't hand out easy As at all you HAVE TO READ AND DO THE WORK, he will kick you out of class. it's well worth it though, he's a great teacher
he does take you to extreme ways of thinking, but hes too demanding. He really helped me with my writing but hes trying to get you to a place you dont about. it makes no sense but if u take his class then you'll understand.
He's tought but he's willing to work with you. You have to stick with it and not give up or lose motivation because once you do, then youre done. It's a new way of thinking and he encourages you to never stop questioning.. overall an interesting class he treats everyone as equals
Hes a very great professor who tries to get you motivated and thinking. He treats everyones as equals & allows everyone to speak their mind. I wouldn't say he is tough, but he does expect you to participate & do the readings he assigns and get things in on time. He is willing to work with you if you need help or extra time.
Great professor and definitely not your regular, boring class. However, he's very unclear about what he wants and you don't get any grades or information about where you stand in the course until it's too late to drop it. Everything is one big question.. including your academic standing.
This is only an assessment of my 3 sessions in his class, but those 3 sessions caused me to drop. Clearly from the get go, he is overwhelming liberal, though more importantly, overly political and subjective. He is more interested in espouging a social philosophy then teaching college students how to be better writers. Contrary ideas not welcome.
Worst professor I ever had. Avoid at all costs unless you want to feel like your life has no meaning.
If you've half a brain, you would take this course. The man is brilliant, and is, I find, very lenient with papers. All he really asks of you is to think critically about what you say and write. If you're not willing to allow your beliefs to be challenged, then this is not your course.
Whitney is still living in 1968. You could see him at a Grateful Dead concert. His class has nothing to do with literature but everything to do with revolutionary politics. If you agree with his Marxist sentiments, you will get an easy “A”.
"Everything is one big question, including your academic standing"!!!!! GREAT! I LOVE IT. It's true! However, just as true (I think) the man is brilliant and without ego which (in my opinion) is a freshing combination. He needs to work on his organization skills though, but he knows it. I wanted to drop; didn't; I'm better for sticking it out
Yes, he's brilliant and not ego-driven. And, yes, the uncertainty is hard to deal with in many ways, but that's just it - the uncertainty leads to deeper questioning, a moving away from just grade-driven writing into probably the most "real" writing you will ever have to do in college. Don't be afraid - be fearless and challenge yourself! Worth it!
Great professor! Allows you to think for yourself. His class was one of my favorite at MSU. Although very political, it is bareable. He's also a bit unorganized but gets the most important stuff done. Easy A. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
hes a self righteous **** with an agenda to match. he told me that if i write what i already know, i am "plagerizing my own head". that is a literal quote. and he actually bvelieves that the matrix is real. every class is his brand of philosophy, even though hes a writing and gramma prof. i couldnt make this**** up, he is unreal.
if you have an answer, you are wrong. That's basically it. He wants you to constantly "dig deeper" no matter how deep you have already dug. He's a hypocritcal pr*ck whose criticisms are more hurtful than helpful. nothing is ever good enough. seriously, he made me NOT want to write... and i'm an english major.
He is a GREAT professor!!! At first, I thought he was tough and I was going to get a bad grade but what I liked about him is that he challenged u to become a better writer....At the end of the semester, I got an A...and although, I felt I did deserve it I was more surprised than anything!! TAKE HIM!!!!
This was a combination class w/Dr. Lewis for Pursuits. He is a great professor who pushes students to think and write beyond the norm. Tough on papers but your not writing normal papers, your writing autoethonographies. Defnitely a challenge but if you are open minded, you will learn alot.
He's not a communist, he's a anorcho-collectivist. Might be good for smart punk rockers. Reminds me of myself when I was in High School, ready to save the world with my big brain. Still, I don't think he's a bad guy, nor do I think he's a violent revolutionary. Don't take this class if you have depressiong or addition problems, trust me on that.
creative nonfiction---great guy, you'll learn so much from him --take him, he doesnt hold your hand, he's not very clear..he makes you write what you want to write, he starts the grade off low, but then right at the end if you've kept trying & digging, you'll get an A
In order to succeed in Bob's class you need to abandon your defense mechanisms and be able to not take things personally. I was going to drop but didn't; toughed it out and ended up getting an A. He's a really smart guy if you give him a chance. My views have been challenged since taking his class.
Bob is really great if you are willing to forget about initial tough grades and embrace the challenges he presents you. More than anyone else I've had he makes you think about and evaluate and reevaluate everything you think you know. Thought about his course more than any other this semester. Sometimes tough but worth it.
Should have dropped. Incredibly unclear about everything. My grade was due to my final paper, which I based on the only two 90s I got. Later he said he should have given me lower grades on the previous "dialogues". No way to judge how you are doing. Comments do not help improve. When you think you get it, you don't. Class participation not helpful.
Oddest thing, or maybe not. Most of the class shares his liberal viewpoint but he still calls us stupid and uninformed every chance he gets. It's very untrue, insulting and does nothing to foster learning. Great person, horrible teacher. It's going to be one loooong semester.
Haha, this guy wigs out and gives everyone D's and F's. It's NOT okay to walk around thinking you're better than everyone else. Man, oh man. RUN, don't walk away from him.
Wasn't going to rate until end but have to now, Whitney is what I call the "tough love" professor. He yells and screams his point beating us into submission. It Never works and only makes him look like the liberal tyrant that he is. Don't take himm.
Bob absolutely changed my life, I cannot say enough good things about him. You have to be willing to expand the way you think, read, and view the world- but the confusion is so worth it. You will be doing reflective journal entries, where you have to question your own ideas- not the author's ideas from a text. The class itself is all discussion.
Before this class I really had no knowledge about the world on a larger scale- but Bob totally opened my eyes to what goes on around us. The texts are mind blowing, & he really made a point about how English is more than just reading a book; it can change the way you view the world. In class discussions, 1 paper revised 3 times, & a provocation.
The start of the semester is going to seem like hell because you'll be exposed to alot of theory. There is 1 paper thats revised 3 times, & as long as you "dig deeper" into your ideas, you'll get an A. All he wants is for you to expand your ideas, & question how you develope your ideas. You could get an F, D, then a C on the papers & still get an A
I understand he wants us to think differently but how are we supposed to do that when he doesn't respect us? He says he wants us to think about things but he acts like we're just dumb kids. Each class is like him telling you to go sit in a corner witha a dunce cap.
Hes not that bad. I took the grammars of English expecting to learn about the rules of grammar and on the first day of class he said we wont be learning anything about grammar, he believes the schooling system is corrupted, so you spend a lot of time discussing how we could change it. Its a decent amount of work, but if you try he will give u an A.
Worst professor in Montclair. Doesn't motivate anybody because all he does is rant about government and politics. Also doesn't respect anyone except for his own views. His friendly demeanor makes him seem reliable, but he will not be afraid to give those D's and F's. Seriously, you're better off with ANY other professor than this guy.
Bob is the best! He doesn't take any bs and he actually makes you think and question what you think you know. Exactly what a professor is supposed to do. Pretty much an unsung hero at MSU.
He is not a bad professor i failed most of his papers but the last one i did well and still got an A. he challenges you to open your mind and to think! Instead of being mindless sheep that wander through life. He will expose you to new issues current and old to make you more intellectual. If youre alright and ready to realize the truth then take it
Worst Professor in the school. Fails you on every paper no matter how much effort you put into it. When you ask a question he doesn't answer it he just asks a new question back to you. Drop his class and take a new professor.
Bad professor. 3 revision with just one papre throughout the whole semester. Even if you do bad on the first two, you can still get A for the semester which doesn't make sense. Stay away from him or get ready to be brainwashed by all his liberal talks. He's just an egotistical guy who thinks he knows everything when he doesn't.
All I'm guying to say is the guy lives by himself in the woods without any form of media or communication. He doesn't believe in any news from almost all sources because everything is apparently a "controversy". Guy needs to stop cooping in his little home all day and go out and have a social life for once to see the REAL world.
He's very kind, and helps you think critically as a writer. I miss him...
Bob was by far one of my favorite teachers at Montclair. At first you would think that the class is going to be hard, but it really was not. I rated the helpfulness and clarity low because he wanted you to think critically. Even today, I use the methods I learned in his class to write papers up and they all have been a's. TAKE HIM HES THE MAN!!
I love bob. He is the smartest man I know.
I was really disappointed with this class. I was expecting to learn a lot, and rather I was frustrated with his grading techniques. 3 revisions of the same paper and he gives you a grade of 35 out of 100 and still passes you at the end. Doesn't make any sense! Don't take him!!
Worst professor.Ever. Unclear with what he wants you to do in his class. Unhelpful.Crazy. Will not hesitate to fail you on ever paper you write no matter how hard you work on it. DO NOT TAKE HIM. You will regret it.
Bob is not conventional and that can be both a good and a bad thing. He's really big on meta-text, to the point were you drive yourself into a temporary abyss. But you do learn with him. You won't realize that until after the class is finished though. Get use to, "whats the big question?" and being challenged from all sides of the scope.
Best professor ever. He will enlarge your life viewing if, and only if you allow and are ready for it. I took two courses with him, thats how much I really wanted to learn from the guy. Extremely wise and knowledgeable. Never had a professor like him.
THE BEST IVE EVER ENCOUNTERED_ HE IS AN ABSOLUTE REAL PERSON THAT WILL TRANSFORM THE WAY YOU VIEW THE WORLD AND EVERYTHING ABOUT SCHOOL IN GENERAL. WISH I STILL COULD DIALOGUE WITH HIM TODAY ASKING IF A PROF IS HOT OR NOT IS NOT RELATED - really?
