Good teacher. Not too much homework. No midterms.
Great professor. There no midterm and final exam in her class, only quizzes, group work, presentation and projects are graded. Her lecture keep me awake since a lot of time she use funny and weird examples. The in-class assignment and projects aren't so hard. Really enjoy her class
I like her! A lot of cases but we learn a lot. Good industry examples and she has great background in what she teaches. Strict but very understanding too.
Easy class with group projects instead of midterms. Make sure you pick a good group.
Don't waste your time with this professor. She tries to pretend she has experience in the marketing world which is a joke. What you will realize is the fact that she herself needs to go back to school and find a real job in mktg job before she even begins to start thinking about teaching students. Nothing she says cannot be read from the book.
She's great!!! Very thorough. Class is very responsive to her teaching method. I learned a lot from this class.
Great lectures! Great class! She gave great discussions for the better understanding of the class. Her examples in class shows her wide marketing experience.
She's has a very effective way of teaching the material. It was easy to absorb and retain the information. I wish all professors were as good as she is.
Great lectures! Great Class! She gave great discussions to help students better understand the class. Her examples in class shows she has a wide marketing experience.
I like this professor. Very knowledgeable. Firm but fair. You will learn a lot. You have to do your share of studying to earn your grades.
Take her class. Very good professor. Knows her subject matter. Very helpful to students too. The best!!
I'm neutral about her. Even though she's knowledgable and very nice. Her grading is inconsistent. You can do something on one paper and get an A, but do the same thing on the next one and get a C. Also somewhat unclear of her expectations for the class. Majority of the work done is group work so make sure you get a good group and you'll be fine.
She grades you as if she is throwing darts at the board. No consistency, never establishes concrete expectations, impossible exams even though one of it was open book. I bot a C even though I put all the work in. Its an "Intro" class but she grades like its a grad class. Avoid if you care about your grade.
I agree w/ previous comments. Her grading is frustrating. The whole class had no idea how well it was doing until the last day when the real percentages and grades came out. At that point it was too late to improve. Cases are graded depending on her mood. Participation? Forget about it, she plays favorites and its worth 15%. Don't take her.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!! This is the first professor I have ever been motivated to write about. She is the hardest grader I have had throughout my college career. She grades her 130 class like one of her marketing concentration classes. Everyone's grades suffer because she is insane.
Teaches from powerpoint only, anyone could teach from slides. Doesn't like to give out A's on the work handed in. On the final presentation there were about 5-6 really good presentations and the highest grade was 87%. Made an intro class hard and frustrating, take someone else if your grades to reflect the work you put in.
I agree that Prof. Makani is very strict in grading, but I also learned a lot in her class. She uses very practical examples and is very knowledgeable in her field. She is accommodating and understanding. I wish there were more professors like her in SJSU. I'm taking her again for 134B.
I learned a lot from this class: How to read a boring textbook, how to read awful powerpoints, and how to sit through boring lectures. Other raters are right, she's nice but lacks any real marketing experience, simply teaches from power points. I learned more from group mates. Though, she does give extra credit...otherwise everyone fails.
Very inconsistent grader. Lectures are tedious and she calls on people randomly often in ways that do not really contribute to the class at all. Picked on me a lot, so I guess I'm biased. Pop quizzes whenever she feels like it, which was often. Maybe she forgot it was an intro class? She was funny at times though, I'll give her that much.
She's passionate about teaching the course and it helps. She takes examples given and apply them to the lesson. She randomly calls on people which forces us to pay attention and think critically. I like her! My friends took her before & said that she is more lively in class when she could walk. Too bad she's in a wheelchair the whole semester.
We learn a lot. I don't know how other students think. My group believes she grades fairly. She considers groupmate rating in the overall group works. This fairly grades students especially those who ride-on their group without doing anything and expect a good grade too. I'll take her class again.
This is how she tells you to prepare for exams: "if you haven't been studying in depth all this long, theres no use studying now." This is two weeks before the "long exam." It was open book and the highest grade was an 85%!?!? 70 tricky questions (a and b, both a and b, neither a or c, etc)She gets a kick out of grading students down!! PASS
Had her for evening class that met once a week. Ratings are accurate. Could not stand the class. Pretty much lost the whole semester and have retained nothing about marketing. She is nice, just not any good at teaching or giving directions.
I also took the evening class because of the good inputs I got from my friends and I did learn a lot. One of the good marketing professors we have in SJSU. She continues to teach even at night inspite of her being wheel-chaired bound for the whole semester.
If this was to rate how nice she is I'd give her a 5! But to be honest her teaching style is not very effective. Never knew what to expect. There were assignments that we spent little time on and got better grades then the ones we spent days working one. Make sure to seek clarification, even that might not help. Nearly impossible to get an A.
I learned a lot and understood everything taught in class. Her teaching style is effective. She gives examples from her work experience and made sure we will be able to use what we learned outside. Great teacher and interesting class! I admire that she continues to teach even in a wheel chair.
Either she likes you or she doesn't. Try for the latter. I agree, inconsistent grading and uninspiring lectures.
Five Case studies 6 pages each. 3 Marketing proposals 10, 15, 30+ pages respectively. 7 Quizzes, one 75 question m/c exam. Two presentations, lots of written work, and 15% for participation which is graded arbitrarily. Attendance is graded and no laptops allowed. Mix all this w/ boring lectures and inconsistent grading.
My class partner and I had accidentally turned in the same case study because we had a miscommunication and guess what, we had two different grades! How is that possible? The same report but two grades? Her grading is whack!
I found the lectures interesting because of the examples given by the professor. The case also helped us understand and apply the topics discussed in class. The workload is a little heavy, but worth it. Great teacher!
The only examples ever used or mentioned were examples straight from the book. Not an ounce of real world experience to speak of, which, needless to say, is what marketing is all about. Decent professor but its like learning from the book. Powerpoints were sleep inducing and by the end of the semester she knew 4 names, her favorites up front
Mediocre in every way. Unfortunately, the class did not resonate with me. Very average in every sense. The professor was very nice but lacked the ability to liven up a classroom.
She's ok I guess. Lots of written work so find the right people for group projects who can share the load. A couple of 5 page case studies and a long marketing project are done over the course. There is one 75q test later in the course which most people are usually not ready for. Take advantage of extra credit cases. Short quizzes every 1-2 weeks.
Her class has a heavy load but it would force you to learn. Good relevant examples. I like the class and learned a lot. I have recommended her class to my friends.
Boring. No laptops for a marketing class? All she uses are powerpoints. Pass on her if you want to learn something useful.
No one knows exactly what she wants of the assignments. Hit or miss. Not too hard of a class but you will learn nothing, because she knows little about marketing as it relates to the real world. Oh and be prepared to doze off as the lectures are ZzzZzz!
I like her class. Good relevant examples. You have to listen well and you'll never regret taking her class.
For me and my group she's one of the best marketing professor we had in SJSU! Fair and will push you to work and earn your grades.
Very good teacher. She makes it interesting and not boring!
I recommended her to my friends. One of the best class I had in SJSU. Challenging work but very much worth the efforts. You have to be attentive and listen well in class.
Riiiiight....4 perfect scores in one day. LOL To be fair, she is average. I came on to rate her because she wouldn't see me about my grade, I thought I got a B but somehow got a C- and she woudln't explain to me. she's okay, don't expect a lot.
Frustrating class.
Hardest grading teacher I have ever had in my 3 years of college. She is a very nice person but I am sorry to say not the best teacher I have ever had. Avoid if possible.
She makes an attempt to make the class interesting. She rushes through the powerpoint slides. Study the slides to do good in the class. Attendance is mandatory and participation is recommended for grading. Expect to do a excessive amounts of group work and at least 3 group presentations. Which is great 'cause it gives you a chance to practice.
I don't even know where to start so I'm just going to say STAY AWAY from this teacher if you are taking BUS190
Even I got C, I have to say that she is a good professor. Very clear, and helpful. Fairly grading. She gave some quizes for you to earn extra credits. You need to read the book before going to the class. It's very helpful. She made class interesting. Nice teacher and Hot too (D)
I learned a lot in this class. Classes are not boring. She uses real-life examples. Very helpful and accomodating but difficult grader.
Tough grader! Make sure you pick a good group because the group projects are back to back!
excellent professor, strict grader, I learned a lot in her class.
I find her class very practical and informative. Great teacher! She have a refreshingly different teaching style from the "traditional" professors. Will enroll again in her other classes.
Great class examples and learning experience. Very knowledgeable. Best class I had.
Very accomodating inspite of the being strict in grading. Enjoyed her class a lot!
Very hard grader and not a great teacher.
qba spring 2011. personally, she is nice and understanding for the most part. however, she was not cut out for teaching. She does not understand questions very well (context of what is being asked). Sometimes i come out of her class even more confused than before. Subject matter is easy, she just doesn't know how to communicate it well
She was a great teacher. She also offered a lot of extra credit stuff if you wanted to boost your grade. If you wanted to earn an A, you had to work for it. :) Taking her again next semester
Love her class and want to take her again. She will help you understand materials, and she is friendly too.
Good teacher, but doesn't explain much stuff. Use the tutoring center or a group and an A is very possible.
Easy teacher, but not always very clear. Offers extra credit, definitely makes a hard class like QBA a little bit more bearable.
Took her for QBA Fall 2011. Her teaching is not that crystal clear. She will teach you the basic and challenge you in hw. Have to go to computer lab once a week b/c she uses Excel QM3 a lot. I find it easier to learn the materials by googling it than listening to her lectures. I would take QBA with another professor.
Makani is a very nice & approachable professor. This is her first time teaching entrepreneurship she uses a lot of her own personal experiences which is a plus. She can be sporatic sometimes but overall, pleasant instructor! Low textbook use. Case studies, group presentations, and quizes make a bulk of the grade.
QBA was a hard class, I mean its a lot to cover plus i took it online! She is good at what she does and provides great instructions. If you don't understand go to her office hours super helpful! Her m/t and final was pretty tedious I ended up with a B in this class, just make sure you have a group that you do hwk with it'll be more helpful!
Homework is easy, but graded way too hard. Very unorganized and looses assignments. She is very nice and makes class fun, but for the "final" which was a case report, she did not allow any electronic devices (most bought ebook), but allowed the physical book. Unless you tell her mistakes have been made, zeros will mysteriously appear under grades.
Won't round a grade from a 79% to an 80%. never prepared for class. gets angry in her class because of her own mistakes. Be ready to correct her everyday in class. Low confidence. no class control. Doesn't know the subject and cant translate the material very well. Does EVERYTHING ONLINE that includes hmwk quizes the test and the final.
Great professor. Grades fairly. You need to know her requirements if you want to do well.
Best class I had. Good and practical examples
Had a great time in her class. Grades fairly and follows her syllabus.
Makani was VERY unorganized and did not know her own material because the class corrected her almost every lecture. She went along with the course as the semester went by, having no control over or use of the syllabus. The ENTIRE class was online and irrelevant to class material. DO NOT TAKE!!!
lets first say that this class is hard and difficult and Makani isnt a statistician by education. However, she makes the class enjoyable, easy to grasp, and relates it real world concepts. She tends to use online stuff a lot which I do not like, but she makes it easy to understand concepts. Class attendance and participation is a must to succeed
Pretty good knowledgable teacher. Gives a lot of extra credit to do well in class. Does require work to a get a B in the class, but it is stats. Much better than other Stats prof's in COB. She actually cares, and she can also extend deadlines to accomodate to her students. She is extremely organized, follows the syllabus nd changes it accordingly
Like the class. Great teacher.
Very patient and teaches the lessons in an easy way to understand.
Helpful and very clear with instructions and expectations for homework/assignments/tests. Term project looks time-consuming, but isn't that hard if you do it right. Lots of group work and in class assignments/quizzes, so don't skip. Discussion questions online are easy, so don't miss them. Great professor, would definitely recommend. Got an A-.
very experienced teacher
took the class and learned a lot. Need to submit assignments on time.
Great teacher. One of the few in the college with actual start-up experience.
I like the practical examples and her hands-on knowledge of actual business issues.
I'm pretty sure Professor Makani is adding all of these comments on here to get a higher rating. She is a horrible teacher who was extremely unorganized and had temper problems. One time in class she even threw a tantrum because a student corrected her, on a problem she really did wrong. She does not know the material, save yourself and DO NOT TAKE
I am taking BUS187 with Prof Makani now. I like the way she teaches it. I have never taken a class like this one and I enjoyed it. Not a lot of lectures, but you have to read the book. We do work in class in teams. She gives a lot of feedback on assignments. I'm taking another class with her next semester. Learned a lot.
Easy work. weekly online discussions, group project, two presentations. Highly recommend you find a good group you will be working with them frequently. During lecture she goes over upcoming assignments, the due dates and what is expected. The book is mandatory, you must read to do well. Make an effort to visit her during office hours
Professor Makani was actually one of my favorite professors to my surprise this semester. Her class is quite simple. Do your work on time. That means complete the quizzes, discussion boards, and papers and you have yourself an A. Sometimes there was miscommunication on assignments but as a student if you ask for clarification then she responds.
Great teacher, she cares and is there to help. There is no final. A couple group presentations is the hardest thing in this class. Whats important is to get a solid group and you'll do fine. The textbook is on chegg too.
Professor Makani is a excellent teacher. Really cares about her students and goes above and beyond to help them out. She has many different types of excercises and projects that helped me understand the material. Would love to take her again!
Professor went over several topics but omitted some of them to make student's life less stressful. She cared about her students and was harder to be accessible because she works part time. Her exams are open notes and there is no lockdown browser. The project was straight forward because I completed a Linkedin badge.
Nice prof but doesn't really explain, expects you to know everything yourself by reading txtbk. Rushes thru her ppts, no one really knows what theyre doing. Assigns class work that must be turned in at end of class but its so lengthy, good luck trying to complete in an hour. Grades harshly. Not a better prof, just a nicer prof
Class has a LOT of assignments in class but she is pretty understanding about giving enough time if there isnt enough in class. Midterms are online and most questions are on Chegg. Make sure you stay up to date with some of the online only assignments, they creep up since the due dates are so spread out. Not a bad professor at all.
Brilliant at quantitative analysis, below average at being an educator. Classes have gone online and this is a difficult class. She is not helpful, cannot explain anything and grades harshly. Narrating problems on zoom is not helpful. I do not recommend taking any class she teaches in-person or online.
Prof Makani is really nice, I had difficulty on this class since its been forever since I took a math class. She is really helpful though, she had optional zoom meetings ever since the quarantine. She'll respond to any of your questions super quickly. She was prompt in grading as well, so I am happy about that. Extra cred is available ya'll
DONT TAKE!! Extremely nit-picky. Gives low grades on discussions questions, homeworks, and quizzes for absolutely no reason (and she insists shes right). Horrible professor, goes over so little in class but then repeats it 6 times. Easy material, I personally understood it ALL, but ended up with a B because of no reason or explanation whatsoever.
Don't take her!
I would not recommend taking her class. She's an extremely harsh grader. She sucks it's not worth your time.
You forget this is only worth 3 units because the workload feels like 9 units. Her lectures are not easy to follow nor is it helpful. Her grading doesn't makes sense. You feel discouraged to learn because of this atmosphere and mockery and only finding ways to survive. Education should not be like this. My worst decision was to choose her for 190.
Professor Makani thinks her students don't have a life. We took our midterm exam 3 part 1 today and it was overwhelming as if it was PhD exam. Honestly I feel she uses the exams and quizzes from PhD professors . Like some of us have children to take care of like myself and she is not a reasonable person. She is so harsh even during COVID tim, avoid
Very inconsiderate (especially for the semester being done through covid), extremely tough grader, refuses to take constructive criticism, thinks our lives revolve around QBA, expects irrational amount of time spent on her class, bad directions for assignments, not clear about anything, her ego comes first. If you care about yourself, DONT take her
This is honestly one of the hardest and most time-consuming classes I've ever taken. She assigns homework and quizzes on a weekly basis, and each assignment takes a couple hours to complete. The way she grades assignments is also very confusing. The only good thing about this class we're allowed to work in groups.
So far, I'm regretting taking her class. Her explanation is not clear, and it seems like she doesn't even know what she's talking about. And she goes so fast and expects us to understand everything. Lots of assignments, and she just makes things really complicated. Extremely time-consuming, and her grade criteria are just too harsh. Avoid !!!
Dr. Bobbi Makani has a very inconsistent grading criteria. She absolutely disregards any feedback and her RMP is incorrect. She does not understand that we are in a pandemic and is expecting us to know the material beforehand. I would stay far away from all her classes.
If you expect your professor to actually teach you during class, STAY AWAY. Professor Makani loves to skim topics and tell us to watch her videos on our own time - I understand a flipped classroom, but this should be disclosed BEFORE the drop period. Quizzes and grading super unclear, gives feedback AFTER we needed it to study.
Using my spring break time to tell everyone she is an unclear and inconsistent grader. I used my senior add code to get in this class and regret it. The first day of class was her trying to boost her ego by telling everyone how bad her ratings are.
the only class that makes me feel like quitting school.....
This is a warning for everyone who would take bus 190. She doesn't teach, she gives so many quizes and midterms that she called MA, as well as another thing called EP. All these are basically quizzes, not HW but quizzes. She doesn't know how to teach, it is a teach yourself class. Her grading is not solutions but just numbers. Bad teacher!!!!!
Your grade will not be a reflection of Makani's teaching skills but rather your own ability to learn material by yourself. She is hands off about teaching and expects you to come to class having already watched all her videos. She doesn't give feedback on assignments in a timely manner. There is a lot of work. Overall a frustrating experience.
She's relatively nice. Flips out if class doesn't respond to her. Ridiculous grading, she knocks off at least a point on stuff just cause. Way too much work, it's like she thinks this is ur only class all semester. Barely skims over topics so you'll spend hours trying to complete lengthy assignments just to get a B-. There are much better teachers.
She is the best professor I had in my college life. I am a fan of the way she teaches. I wish I had professors like her back in my home country in Europe. I hope I can take her for other Business classes in later future. I 100% would prefer her. She is the best and loves giving 5 to 6 assignments to her students each week and overwhelming them.
Gives points off all the time but doesnt tell you why
More work than my major classes combined with zero teaching and docks points for no reason. STAY AWAY!
Makani gives a lot of homework, but they're not hard to do, just some are very tedious. U definitely need to be on top of your schedule if you're going to keep up with this class in addition to your other classes. On the plus side though, she's very nice and responsive to students' questions.
She's fun but can get irritated (she threw a fit once because no one did the readings before class). She expects you to go beyond her rubric for an A and docks off random points without feedback. Assignments are easy but endless. ALL papers, projects, presentations, OCBPMs and class discussions (if those weren't enough) requires a peer review too.
If you can avoid taking her class, do so! She is probably one of the worst professors at SJSU! You will be teaching yourself, and she wont give you reason why points are being deducted from your work.
Out of all options for 190, she is the best. She cares about passing student but u have 2 wrk, she is specific about format but its easy. I talked to others who didn't have her and they were failing 190 nor weren't learning the same materials. Excel work is not hard, don't skip during LP or u can get lost. Think strategically like real life work.
Super tough grader, almost has something against giving a 100%. Easy concepts/class as long as you put in some effort. Very impersonal and a lot of group projects. Not bad but not the best either. Gets very irritated very fast with no warning, usually if you talk during a lecture, threatened to fail us all because two guys in the back were talking.
Lots of group work. Be prepared to work with groups. no exams, but cengage quizzes and mainly group projects. She is a good and nice prof but I would not take her class again cus she hella grades on written work and is a VERY tough grader.
I liked the class. If you follow the reading materials, you will learn a lot since it complements the lectures.
Good and fair
I like the lectures and the class examples. The peer review help screen out group mates that do no work.
Load of works but I learned a lot.
good class
I agree there's lots of cases and assignments but if you follow the instructions. It's not that difficult. Learn a lot in the process. Will take her class again
Will enroll on her next class.
