i can't say this class was easy, but it is pretty straight forward. we had 2 major speeches along with a few short impromptu speeches and 2 summaries to write. if you did the work, you were almost guaranteed to pass. he loves sailing and has stories from when he was in the navy and chats before class so everyone is comfortable giving speeches later

I think he is an easy professor. If this is one of your last classes you need or you want to get it out of the way, take this profeessor. He is so easy to get along with and so far we've left class early almost every class. Such an easy A and glad I took it for the summer!

Professor MacPhail is awesome. Public speaking is not my thing, but he eases you into the speeches and he is not a harsh grader. NO essays in this class at all just outlines for the speech. Gives out alot extra credit too. Best speech professor in pirate college.

I absolutely dread public speaking of any sort ;however, Professor MacPhail made the class fun and light. The only writing you have to do is your outlines for the speeches, and he tells you EXACTLY how to write them and is very helpful. I literally had the DUMBEST people in my class and they still got exempt from the final and finished with an A.

Easy class if you pay attention and go to oral communication center for help. Have a general idea of what you want to speak about for your speeches by the first class. I would recommend him as a teacher for anyone that has to take speech. If you make enough points you don't have to take the final.

I actually loved this class, contrary to what many people have told me about speech classes. Professor MacPhail explains the material in a way that is really easy to understand, and will make sure to involve the whole class in the lecture. You'd probably have to *try* to fail his class.

He makes it comfortable to talk in front of the class. Always come prepared to give your speech. He is a very laid back professor and gives good feedback on speeches. Don't go over your time on speeches, he takes off points for that. Only 4 speeches, midterm, and final. Gives you the option to take the final.

He is the greatest speech professor on the Lee campus. I would definitely take him again! He was such an awesome teacher and really explained all the assignments thoroughly. Made doing speeches so chill. Attendance wasn't mandatory but you should definitely go to class though.

I was SO nervous to give speeches! MacPhail was so encouraging and graded so fairly that getting an A was easy and fun! He is a really really cool guy with an interesting back story. I learned a lot in his class, I really like his teaching style. Very laid back and helpful.

I hate speech, and I really was not looking forward to taking this class. However, you mainly take notes and there's only two big speeches that are both at the end of the semester, so by that time you'll be more than prepared. He is extremely nice, so if you're nervous he'll try and help calm you down. Very easy class.

Professor Macphail is great! Attendance isn't really mandatory since I didn't show up and still passed with a 96%. You only have 2 major speeches which are not very difficult as you begin to feel nor comfortable in class. He definitely teaches you how to be prepared! Overall great class and easy A. He's great!

Two super easy quizzes and does a class review and study guide. It is so easy to get an A in this class, just show up and practice your speech. If you have any fear or worries about taking speech this is the professor to take. He's very calm and understanding, as long as you attend class regularly and listen you will get an A. We had 3 speeches and 1 homework assignment. He helps you when you are up in front of the class by asking questions about your topic if you get stuck. Awesome guy.

Good class! Graded on 2 impromptu speeches, if you did it you got full credit, 2 bigger speeches, 1 graded paper, 2 graded outlines, your notes/journal and 2 quizzes! And attendance. He is also very sensitive and helpful to students who have difficulties speaking in front of the class! If you are afraid of public speaking take his class!

He is a great professor. You need to show up for class, but there were two major speeches, one final speech and three outlines to do. You also gave a couple brief speeches on small topics and at least one paper to work on. MacPhail is not too hard to grade, but make sure you show up for the class.

I have major anxiety attack whenever I speak to a large crowd but he really help you get over your anxiety and calm yourself down to deliver your speech smoothly. Easy A. He will give you a bunch of extra credit assignments to help you get an A at the end of the term if you don't have an A

Really great professor! Easy A! I suffer from general anxiety, panic attacks, and social anxiety and he makes you feel super comfortable up there! Follow outlines EXACTLY and you'll be good! Only had 2 speeches for Summer B, you will end up writing a lot but it's not too bad! Better off reviewing quiz topics yourself but still goes over them! 10/10

This is by far the BEST professor I have had at FSW! He teaches through habituation and that is the only way to learn. I wish he taught MATH too! He doesn't make learning in his class some great mystery to be solved. Straight forward teaching style, what is expected is laid out in simple instructions. Wants to see you succeed not confuse you.

I am considered a mature student. After being out of school for 31 years, I was at the point where I needed to finish what I start long ago. He teaches basic life skills and skills necessary for the business world. He lectures and reinforces the main points each day. His guidance and criticism were positive. If you do the work correctly and go to class you will get an A. One paper which is pretty easy. There are two main speeches each with corresponding outlines. You also have a journal that you write in every class. Two quizzes, super easy if you take notes. Word of advice for speeches: you should have 3 main points, not 2! Highly recommend him!

I took an evening class with Professor MacPhail, he is truly a gem. Pay attention, don't just complete assignments for a grade, actually do the work. My communication in every aspect has changed and nto many professors leave an impact on me. He has set the bar at FSW!!!!

Speeches are all of your choice so you won't have to talk about something that is totally boring. He grades fairly and he bases your grade off if you actually put in some effort. Will not bash you if you get nervous or scared, he is very understanding and a great professor overall. 100% recommend!!!

He is a wonderful professor. Taking a speech class for those who have anxiety speaking in front of people (like myself) or for those who just arent comfortable doing that, Hes the perfect professor to make you feel confident enough to speak. Only hard part can be writing the actual speeches but his directions are very clear :)

There's two quizzes(but graded like test) are open note. The speeches are very easy. He does provide a outline for them which helps. He does count journal entries,keep your notebook organized & with info from class/textbook. The final speech is in a way your final (exam). Easy A

If you need to take a speech course, take this professor! An easy A, there are quizzes but you have two tries and its all based off the book, easy. No final test. 3 speeches, one essay with no word count and 3 outlines. But not difficult, just follow along with the examples. He isnt a heavy grader at all. Take this class.

Very easy professor. There is only one essay and no test final. Six quizzes that all had unlimited retakes. He gives 10 extra points for every assignment turned in early. Does not provide specific feedback though; his comments are copied for the whole class. If it's past 11:59pm, he will still give you full credit if you turn it in before 10am.

(I got a 100 on both and I didn't follow the rubric perfectly). You're guaranteed an A in this class and you won't be stressed at all. Nicest professor

Such a nice professor. This class was really interesting. Not a tough grader at all. If you turn it in reasonably late you're fine. He really is just very caring and understanding. It's not a hard class at all if you follow the syllabus.

Take him! He is such a nice professor and very caring. Guarantee A if you just turn in assignments. Turned in an assignment a month late due to Hurricane Ian and he still gave me a 100%. The quizzes are easy and the answers are on quizlet. If you turn in any assignment earlier he will give you extra credit. Tip: Don't procrastinate on the Journal.

SO SO NICE! Professor MacPhail has been my favorite professor thus far. He is very understanding and supportive of students needs. Not comfortable presenting? Do so after class. We only had to do a few assignments, that being the MGP/GPS assignment, 4 journals (writing assignments), the group project, and the final essay.
