His questions are purely opinions...enough said
Often repetitive, but thorough in his explanations. Tests are nearly word for word out of the course pack and are easy to pass with minimal effort.
Horrible teacher, speaks extremely slow and very hard to be stay awake.
This proff is probably one of the most boring in the school. It is impossible to pay attention. Tests are easy enough that you can pass, but due to lack of explanation, acquiring an A takes a lot of work.
He doesn't teach. He just reads powerpoint slides.
Incredibly slow and repetitive, teaches directly from the powerpoint slides (the ones he asks you to buy in a "course pack"). The course is thus scandalously easy, but due to the mandatory attendance policy (why!?) you probably won't enjoy it.
Great professor.. A little bit boring but he knows his stuff. Some of his explanations can really help you out. Just read the course pack he gives and go through the text and you'll do fine.
Overall hes quality. sometimes its hard to stay awake in class, but he explains things easily and his tests are easy enough if you know your stuff.
Fun class! I used to be a C student in AP econ in high school, but since 201 was required by the COE, I had to take it. Puryear explains things very clearly. Easy going guy, speaks a little too much but he's fun, insightful and generally easy to talk to and understanding. Attend. was req. and class was 2 hours, but other than that it was great.
Nice prof. Class attendance mandatory.
He is a nice guy and was very helpful when you needed it.
Really good professor who cares about his students. He wants everyone to do well and he will help you as much as you need for that to happen. Highly recommend but don't skip his class.
Puryear gets a bad rap on this website. I'll admit his class isn't a cinch, but when you walk out of his class, you will know your stuff through and through. I recommend sitting up front. He's very clear and thorough in class, his tests are difficult but if you use the online resources, you'll get an A. If you're serious about econ, take his class.
He was awesome. So exuberant about the material and gave great examples. It wasn't hard to pay attention, and doing so really made the material easy to understand.
Prof. Puryear is an awesome professor. Yes, his tests are pretty tough and some of the concepts are hard to understand, but that comes with the territory. He gives get examples and tries to get the class to participate a lot. Make sure to study the material a lot for the test and don't come to class sleepy. You miss one bit and you'll be lost.
GREATEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. He loves what he does and geniunely cares about his students. He loves to help and is really concerned with if everyone knows the material. His tests are pretty fair and there isnt too much outside work. Take puryear if you can!
i'm not really into economics to begin with and this teacher really affirmed my disinterest in the subject. although he talks very slowly, he manages to be very confusing. he is a good guy but to me, he was a terrible teacher. i do not recommend taking a class taught by him unless you have a firm grasp on economics.
Professor Puryear is a great guy. I personally have no interest in economics and I found this class challenging, but you can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He is very helpful and my favorite part of this class was having him for a teacher.
Very good professor. Great guy, and he loves teaching. Very clear teacher too. Take Puryear.
Ok, he's a super nice guy, but this class was extremely difficult. In class, he makes the concepts seem really easy, but then the test comes and it is way too hard for what the class lectures/ reading presents. If you're going to take his class, be prepared, take notes everyday, and keep up with the reading WEEKLY.
Awesome teacher. Super personable. He explains difficult material very clearly and concisely. Take his class!!!!!
"Consider the following." What he talks about in class may seem easy yet the tests were extremely hard. If I hadn't gone to tutoring I wouldn't have passed. Definitely proved my disinterest in Econ.
Puryear is a really nice guy. He lectures off of powerpoints and makes corny jokes, but he embraces it. He makes it pretty entertaining, but it can be boring at times. Attendance taken daily. If you can avoid buying the textbook, do. Tests are straightforward and fairly easy. I would definitely recommend him!
Dr. Puryear was my FAVORITE professor this semester! You can tell that he really cares about his subject & his students. He's open and easy to talk to. Econ is required by COE, so I had to take it even though I don't find it that interesting. Puryear used LOTS of examples that make the concepts fun and easy to remember on test day. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
*From an Econ major* Mr. Puryear is a very passionate teacher about Economics, but for a 200 level intro to econ class, his tests were extremely difficult, the notes were confusing to follow, and the book was not useful. If you can take 201 with another teacher, do it. If you have Puryear, be prepared to study a ton. USE MYECONLAB PRACTICE TESTS.
Mr. Puryear explains material in class and it seems very simple, but his tests are another story (they're tough!). Use the MyEconLab study plan for tests, it really helps! The lectures are boring, and Mr. Puryear makes his TAs do a lot of his work (he doesn't have office hours himself, his TAs do). I would take this class with another professor.
Good teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bobby Puryear is a good lecturer with good examples of ideas but the class is hard. His tests are not similar to the lecture style but more closely related to the textbook. Would not take him if I didn't half to.
He's super helpful if you go to his office hours. Super nice guy and funny lectures. Loved his class.
He is very entertaining and you can tell that he is experienced in teaching. He makes jokes in class and always gives students time to ask questions, even if you just ask for him to go over a topic again. I would recommend him to anyone who has an interest in economics
Bobby is the most thorough and passionate professor for economics. Would recommend! (He makes jokes.)
You can tell he enjoys teaching and does an amazing job of explaining something I knew nothing about and even made it interesting. If you don't buy the course packet you'll be lost because lectures go hand in hand with it, but the textbook isn't necessary in my opinion because he explains material so well. Tests are very difficult for intro level.
He was definitely my favorite professor this semester. He knows econ can be dry, so he jokes around and tries to give lots of examples to help you understand. GET THE COURSE PACK at sir speedy!! (makes the class ten times easier) He is really kind and understanding. would easily take the class again.
Even if you know nothing about econ you can pass this class easily (either b/c Puryear is a good teacher or b/c his class is easy idk). However, don't make the mistake of just buying the course pack and not taking notes; save $20 and take your own notes. Same goes for the textbook, you won't use it.
Professor Puryear makes his lectures engaging but his tests are definitely difficult. The textbook, his notes textbook, and lectures will all be needed to do well on the tests. He's really responsive outside of class and approachable. Also be sure to ask questions in class so he knows your face. He helps those he knows more than those he does not.
As a junior engineering student just trying to meet my econ requirement I'm glad I took Dr. Puryear. He's easy to get along with and enthusiastic. Attendance is required, but he's pretty lenient about excusing absences if you have a good reason. Multiple choice tests weren't too difficult, paying attention, doing hw, and skimming text book I got Bs
Dr. Puryear is amazing! The course is much easier than I expected. Puryear is successful at making confusing material much more interesting and easier to understand. He truly cares about each student as well. If you have to take this course, sign up for his section!
Professor Puryear was such an amazing Econ professor, which tends to be a hard thing to teach well. He thoroughly explains everything, and has great lectures but if you want to do well, you CANNOT skip class. He is extremely helpful and caring, and will always make himself available after class for any questions.
Puryear is a great professor and wants his students to appreciate what he is teaching. He is funny and will keep joking even if you don't laugh. But laugh, it makes him happy. The course pack he designs is something all professors should do. You will appreciate it.
Fantastic human being which translates to him being a fantastic teacher. Great at explaining concepts. Speaks at a slow enough pace to allow for comprehension. Highly recommend.
He's funny and makes the subject more enjoyable. Grades consists like 80% of only a few tests so make sure to study and do good on them. Course pack was helpful. I would say definitely pay the $17 for it because it will be hard to take notes otherwise.
Puryear is an absolute sweetheart! He is caring, hilarious and dedicated towards his students and the subject. The only thing I would watch out for is that the class is very test heavy. Your grade consists of 3 tests, the final, and homework (which is only worth 10%).
Puryear is a great professor, he explains the material quite well. The actual content of the class is really boring, but he tries to keep it interesting by making jokes. If you pay attention in class, take notes, and do the homework you'll be fine. Definitely do the practice in MyEconLab it helps a lot.
I loved having him, he's a real caring guy and genuinely wants you to do good. His lectures are amusing and he tries his best to keep you engaged. Really enjoyed having him and made the material manageable.
Very kind and funny professor, hes very experienced so does a good job of helping everyone understand
Dr. Puryear was a fantastic professor. His course pack was extremely helpful when it came to understanding the material, and he used many fun examples to make the concepts seem more realistic. His tests do require studying though, and I learned that the hard way. Besides that, he was a very caring and fun person.
Bobby Puryear was an amazing professor! I really struggled in his class, but he was dedicated to making sure that I was successful. He was incredibly understanding and always willing to spend time with me outside of class. However, if you're not good at taking tests, this isn't the class for you. 90% of the grade is based on tests and the final.
Econ with Puryear was enjoyable. He is very enthusiastic about the material and genuinely cares about the success of his students. The test are straight forward and are fairly easy if you have a good understanding of the material discussed in lecture.
Dr. Puryear is a good choice for EC 201. Lectures are straightforward, and the course pack is very helpful.
Puryear is AMAZING! While some topics of microeconomics might take some practice on your part, he makes the class enjoyable. I strongly recommend getting the course pack before your class starts. Also, doing the homework and practice tests before exams is extremely helpful. I encourage you to go to class and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Puryear is a nice professor, although his grading criteria TERRIBLE. Homework was 10% and exams were 90%. If you have a love for economics and you are a great test taker you will be fine. His niceness did not makeup for the struggle I had in this class. If possible definitely go with another professor you won't be sorry!!!!
He has interesting classes and explains material really well
Mr. Puryear is a great professor. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and tries to make class more interesting and easier to understand by using lots of analogies. However, he is test heavy. Each test counts for 20-30% of your grade and homework is only 10%. Therefore if you do bad on one test it will most definitely hurt your grade.
Puryear is the way to go if you don't want to fall asleep when learning about economics. We warned, his class is weighted 90% exams and 10% attendance/homework so studying for the exams is crucial. Regardless, you'll be glad you took economics with him.
Dr Puryear truly care about what he lectures on and the students he lectures to. Microeconomics gets somewhat confuses towards the end of the semester but he and his TA's are very accessible if you are struggling.
Bobby is a solid professor. I have had a lot worse, but I also have had better. His class is lecture heavy. I think he is very engaging with his lectures, but I do not love the set up of his class. The 3 tests and the final are worth 90% of your grade, so study! The homework has a nice set up.
Dr. Puryear has taken the time to meet with me before every test to go over material. Super nice guy and cares about his students. Super smart and explains things well. There are 4 tests and worth 90% of grade which is tough but doable.
Took his class freshman year when covid hit. One of the best Professors I have ever had. The test were easy if you studied. You dont even need the textbook for this class as he explains everything in his lectures and tells you what is going to be on the test. Take good notes in your course pack and I believe you can get an A easy!!
I dont know how he isnt higher rated because I thoroughly enjoyed his class. His course pack contains every slide so you can really focus on what hes saying and not copying down stuff word for word. He makes everything so easy to understand theres an 100% chance Id take his class again
This class isn't too difficult and the tests are exactly what you expect. His lectures are clear and easy to understand, and well prepare you for test material. The online homework is helpful as well. If you actively attend class and do the homework you will do just fine.
Dr Puryear is very experienced but unless you are good at test I would take the class with another professor. He reads directly off the PowerPoints and can be quite boring. Test are 90% with no extra credit and he does not replace the lowest test score. If you don't love economics then I wouldn't take this class.
He was a wonderful professor and he made the material easy to understand through metaphors and funny examples. He did a great job at teaching economics and not politics and asked for feedback from students about his curriculum. He connected with students by keeping them involved and telling funny stories/jokes. He is a genuinely caring person.
Dr. Puryear has been my favorite professor so far. His lectures are amazing and he explains things really clearly. His course pack helps a lot. Make sure you go to lectures because his explanations are really good. He genuinely cares for his students and wants them to succeed in his class.
All you have to do is show up and pay attention and you should get at least a B
He has a cult-following which surprised me given that he is not an effective teacher. All he did was read the course guide word for word and did not add much to the class. Exams were worth 90% of our grade and he never offered any insight into what we needed to know to be effectively prepared. Take this class online or with a different instructor
Do not take this class if you do not need it for your major! Puryear is a very kind man but there is absolutely no reason that exams 4 exams should be 90% of your grade in an INTRO to economics class. It was absolutely ridiculous. Studied my butt off and still got a C... and now my GPA is suffering.
Puryear is unfathomably based. The class is hard, 4 tests make up 90% of your grade, but if you pay attention you should get a B- at the minimum. Again, isn't easy but Puryear is based.
Professor Puryear is genuinely a good guy that cares about what he does. Highly recommend to take him if you need EC 201.
Very well-balanced course between homework and lectures and relatively easy test. Great analogies to keep you engaged and focused during lectures.
nice guy, makes it easy for students
Very good teacher. Only extra credit is attendance. Listening to lectures and asking questions is key to understanding material.
He was very excellent at teaching, lectures were entertaining and helped you relate to real-world scenarios. Always gave examples and made sure every subject was understood. Attendance was not mandatory but allows you to earn a few extra points if you do go to class. Overall if you go to class and turn things in on time you should be fine.
Exams are extremely difficult, you will need to spend outrageous hours of studying and practice problems just to pass the exam. There is no reason for exams to be worth 90% of your grade. If you want a good GPA, would not recommend him! He does not provide outside help, just suggests his TA, which was no help at all. He is a nice person, not prof.
Dr. Puryear was a great professor! Just study for the test and you should do fine. The homework is easy and not a lot. A lot of people give him hard difficulty levels but that's just because micro is a hard to grasp sometimes. You can get over 3 points added to your final grade for attendance, which is amazing!
I enjoyed Dr. Puryear's class. He has entertaining lectures and is very straightforward about what will be on the exams. All of his assignments & exams are through Pearson, so if you use their study plans you should be fine on the tests. His final is non-cumulative so that is also super nice. Overall good class and good guy. I would take again.
Good professor, not my favorite but it's easy to see why a lot of people like him. 3 tests that are worth 90% of grade so if you bomb one you pretty much have to drop class. They aren't hard if you study, but you won't pass if you don't study. 3+ extra credit points for attending class is very clutch.
Dr. Puryear is a great guy. His "textbook" is a collection of slides that he covers during the semester. His tests and HW are through MyLab. Test questions are extremely similar, if not identical, to the MyLab practice tests, so preparing for a test can be quite easy if you have the time to go through the practice tests. Lectures can become boring.
Makes econ easier to understand than it should be.
Bobby Puryear is a very nice man who cares about his students but Econ is very hard if you are not good at reading graphs and understanding math. The lectures are so boring and he goes almost a full hour and 15 minutes every class. Do not take this class unless you have to.
Dr. Puryear was exemplary. He was always prepared, made the content easily digestible, and was well organized. The course pack was insanely useful (slide notes), the lecture recordings came in clutch, and the homework were worthwhile. His enthusiasm about the material and its connections to the real world made economics extremely rewarding.
Dr. Puryear was awesome! He was always prepared, receptive to students, and genuinely cared about the material. His lectures were interesting and really broke down the material to make it easy to grasp. If you need to take EC201 definitely take it with Puryear!
Great professor! Fun lectures, easygoing, no technology allowed but paper copies of his lecture slides were available. Extremely clear on what was supposed to be on the test and what you didn't need to memorize.
This class was ridiculously boring, he is a very nice guy but I could not understand any of the material. There are weekly homework assignments and 4 exams but the lowest score gets dropped, you also get 5 free absences and if you miss more than 5 classes he takes points off your grade. I do not recommend this class.
Dr. Puryear is very kind and helpful; however, nothing he teaches in class correlates with what is on the exam. He offers no curves and nothing to make your grade better. I would highly advise you to take the course with a different professor for more grading leniency.
He really cares a lot about his students, and the course pack he provides is VERY, VERY helpful. His tests are all materials from the course pack, so as long as you study, you are fine. His lectures are very interesting and funny. He is very helpful, and all the lectures are recorded as well. He was one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Nice guy but bad teacher. This was the most boring class I have ever taken and test were super hard. I do not recommend this professor.
Professor Puryear is very kind but the material is difficult and a lot of the material covered in class was different on the test. Doesn't offer any extra credit/curves and takes points off of the overall grade for going over the attendance threshold for ANY type of absence which feels a little excessive and can drop your grade a lot.
Dr Puryear is just an amazing guy. The occasional joke is never missing in his lectures which makes them so much more engaging and interactive. Regarding the class material, I wouldn't say the class is easy but if you really pay attention in class you'll be fine. There's a TON of graphs but he does a good job explaining them in real world terms.
Such a fun guy, he really finds a way to make econ interesting and is passionate about it. The class itself is not easy, the tests are worded in a way to try to trick you, but welcome to economics. You cant miss more than 3 classes
His lectures were somewhat interesting as he tried to correlate econ with real life examples but it would make 0 sense. He would talk about baseball as an example which if you are not a sports fan, good luck trying to understand anything. This kind of teaching/examples made the tests super hard.
Super great guy and genuinely does care about you. Although, if you are not good at understanding graphs maybe don't take it. That's a huge chunk of it right there. The tests are extremely difficult and don't quite match class material. Don't take unless you have to or have a good idea of economics already. I had to grade exclude it.
Dr. Puryear is one of the best professors. He is kind, caring, and makes sure students understand the material. His lectures were interesting and he explained the content in a way that students could understand, by using real-world examples. The tests were difficult, but as long as you understand the content in the course pack, you will be fine.
Cannot recommend him enough, he made econ bearable and even fun for a STEM student. Explained concepts in a way a kindergartener could understand. He also essentially told us what would be on each test in the lectures.
Professor Puryear was hands down the best instructor I have had in my schooling career. He is someone who lays the information down very clearly early on and ensures that his students have a deep understanding of the content. Microeconomics can be a very confusing topic, but Professor Puryear made it very engaging and reasonable.
Dr.Puryear is the absolute sweetest! As someone who didn't understand the concept of tax before now, his lectures were clear and easy to follow. HIGHLY recommend reading the textbook, as it reinforces and provides clarity to his lectures if you didn't understand. Assignments are easy and due every week, tests have the same types of questions.
Take Dr. Puryear! He is so kind and does his best to make the lectures engaging and interesting. The tests and homework are relatively straightforward. The textbook is a great aid and helps explain the content very well. He does a great job of teaching the material!
Most, if not all, of what you'll need is in the course pack which is the best $20 I've ever spent. Homework is easy and each question has at least 2 attempts, so your homework grades will always be above 90%, and while his tests are long, tough, and require some memorization, all you need is a pack of index cards, your course pack, and some energy.
Dr. Puryear is a gem. He explains things SO well and is easy to follow. His lectures are very interesting and he always makes an effort to make us smile. Your grade are heavily dependent on exams, so you do have to really take time to study up. He is the best of the best in his department and if you get the option of taking his class, DO IT
Dr. Puryear is easily my favorite professor at NCSU. He cares about his students, is passionate about the subject, and provides easy anecdotes to help students understand otherwise difficult concepts. Although this is a difficult class, the material matches his tests and his easy-going nature and jokes made this class a gem.
Dr. Puryear is a great professor. He is extremely kind and caring and gives great lectures. The material can sometimes be confusing at first but he explains it very well. The exams are worth 80% and are not too difficult if you study the course pack and do practice problems. If you have the opportunity to take this class with Puryear then do it.
TAKE THIS CLASS! EC201 is hard because it's 80% test average and 20% hw but Puryear makes it worth it. He's super funny and engaging and explains the material really well. Sometimes I wouldn't understand anything until the next day but he is always open to questions. I loved his class, be sure to order the Bojangles Puryear special ;)
I was scared Prof Puryear was not going to be a good professor. By his first lecture I was completely proven otherwise. He's extremely engaging, explains things very well, is thoughtful towards students, and answers questions very well! He prints out his slides and tells you the important things to write, making note taking and studying easy! 10/10
There's 4 tests throughout the semester, you get 5 free absences and after that he starts docking points off your grade. Class is boring but he highlights what slides are important to know for the exam. So to do well on tests, just take the notes he highlights and go over the bolded text from his slides. I didn't use the textbook :)
Dr. Puryear is easily one of the most engaging professors I have had at NC State. He condenses the textbook into his course pack that makes note-taking and studying easy, and in his lectures he uses funny analogies to get his point across. It's also obvious he deeply cares about his students, and he helped me discover my interest in economics.
Professor Puryear made EC201 incredibly easy for me. He was a great teacher who was funny and engaging, and actually taught the exam material.
Dr. Puryear loves to make his students laugh! He was truly invested and enthusiastic about Economics and wanted to spread his love for it to his students. He was super caring and always available to offer resources to all his students in order to make sure they succeed! The class is mainly test heavy so be ready to study!!
He was an amazing teacher all around. He made econ so interesting and he made the class itself super fun, despite it being an 8:30. The resources and homework were super helpful and the notes he gave were amazing. If you do the work the tests are basically just another homework assignment. I highly recommend him, he is so kind.
Professor Puryear is engaging and makes the material very clear. The course pack is a lifesaver - just study that and you'll be golden. Exams are tough but fair. I found unstuck study super helpful for practice and review too.
Dr. Puryear was amazing. His lectures were engaging and he used real world examples as well as 3-D visuals that made it much easier to understand. He also always made himself available outside of class for additional help.
This class was honestly harder than it should have been in my opinion. Certain topics could have been explained a bit better and occasionally I found myself watching youtube videos on certain topics as it was better explained by others. He is very passionate about teaching and makes lectures super engaging at 8:30 though.
Dr Puryear is the best professor I have had at NC State. His lectures are very engaging, and he goes through and explains each example to ensure everyone has an equal understanding. The textbook readings are not necessary, and I personally never read them. Use the Study plan to your full advantage on each test and read over the class notes. 100/10
dr puryear is a very fun and caring teacher. he uses his own textbook which is just the lecture slides which makes it so much more helpful because you dont have to copy anything down and can just add to the class notes and focus on him. tests are online and all MCQ. it is a fairly easy class. lots of hw which are easy 100s. would recommend.
Really good teacher. Test are the vast majority of the grade so mark sure to study well for those.
He is awesome, take him if you can. Econ can be boring but he does his best to keep everyone engaged. Go to class and you will do fine. Missing more than 4 classes will take points off your grade. Wish I could take him again really is a great professor and cares about his students.
A great professor; you know he cares a lot about teaching. That being said, if you aren't a strong test taker, DO NOT take this class. Our main portion of the final grade were all exams, and he doesn't round. Pay attention in lectures, and you'll do fine
Dr. Puryear does a great job of trying to make the lectures interesting while also not skimming over any topics. He goes into great detail on topics during his lectures and is always willing to answer any questions on the material in class. He also sends a lot of emails out informing students on any changes in class.
TAKE DR PURYEAR he is the best professor I've had so far. Econ can be a tough subject but he explains it so well, his course pack is great I never even read the textbook. HW is an easy A, the tests are weighed heavy and can he difficult but if you use his study resources you'll be prepared! Also extremely nice, helpful, and funny!!
Dr Puryear was an amazing teacher, I would recommend him 100%. Very engaging and lectures where things actually stick with you, im just not good with math.
Dr Puryear is a great professor who is very knowledgeable about the subject. While some topics were boring, he kept the class engaged through jokes and fun examples. Exams are worth 80% of your grade, and there is one homework assignment for each chapter. The textbook site and paper coursepack were extremely helpful when studying.
He is a great guy and he teaches well, but the biggest flaw is that the tests are worth 80%. You can tell he cares a lot about the subject but it is so boring that it is easy not to care. The best things to do are to do the practice quizzes and study plan on the program where the homework is and study that. Other than that he is amazing.
The class was fairly easy and the professor was engaging and knew the content well. However, the tests are worth most of your grade (80%) and to take the tests you are forced to install spyware like a LockDown browser.
Tests are 80%. Great guy tho.
Dr. Puryear is one of the best professors I've had at NCSU. He was knowledgable and passionate about the topics and made them easy to understand. There were 3 tests and a final exam that was non cumulative and not too much homework. He's clear on the criteria and how to achieve a good grade on exams. Great professor!
Dr. Puryear's class may be the best lecture course I have ever taken. He has been teaching Economics for decades and it is evident through his engaging lectures with clear examples, his flexible attendance policy (5 free absences), and the course pack with all slides for the course to take notes in. Highly recommend taking his class if you can!
