He was probably the best math professor the school has. He's such a good lecturer and his exams aren't easy, but they're definitely fair. Overall he made the class a lot easier than other professors did. If you do the work and all of the suggested homework you're fine. Only complaint is that the class has no curve regardless of low averages.
Bobby is an amazing prof! Even tho he hasnâ??t taught 153 that many times in the past, he was REALLY clear & helpful. Kinda goes fast in lectures so u have to keep up. Posts past tests on Carmen with answer keys, assigns only 3 hw probs out of the book each week. If u spend enough time doing assigned probs and go to lectures, u should be fine!
He's definitely the best math professor I've had here. Everything he speaks just makes sense. And he's super into it, gets out of breath sometimes explaining infinite series..... He barely puts a curve on the class though, just a precaution.
Great Professor, throughly enjoy this class. He does a great job explaining concepts in lecture and it makes it very easy to understand what you are doing. I haven't missed lecture once even though he posts them on carmen. Very humorous guy and I am very glad I have him, the best choice.
He was extremely clear in his lectures and made class thoroughly enjoyable. Very good at giving example problems that are relevant to the midterms and from speaking with other students, he is the best Calculus professor. I definitely recommend!
Very clear and super nice. He is much better than many other math professors. He explains things well and is good at example problems. Can sometimes be a little condescending in his lectures, but not in a rude way, he just explains things in such a way that someone with little background in math can easily understand. All lectures posted on carmen.
Ramsey is one of the best professors, or even teachers, I have ever had. He understands the material and knows how to explain it so that his students can also understand. He doesn't talk down to any students despite their questions and seems to enjoy what he does. If I could have him again, I would.
Doesn't curve class after a midterm average of 66. Don't trust him he is a misleading grader
Awesome guy and teacher. He is very to-the-point and moves kind of quickly, but he will give you help if you ask for it. He records his lectures, which is great because you can get away with missing class.
Ramsey is one of the few calculus professors who actually understand the material and teach it well. His midterms are hard just because the material is difficult and fast-paced. Doing the practice problems and midterms along with precalculus knowledge, you'll do well. He's a fair grader but he gives points if you deserve them. Lec vids are online!
You can't go up to him and ask him a question. He's too condescending and unaware that students are here to learn. Do not recommend.
Class is pretty straightforward. He never had time to help during office hours though
Good guy. Explains material very well. Could be a bit more approachable, but he does a good job once you become friendly. Would take again.
Clear to the point, and gives lots of examples. Usually posts electronic lectures online too so you can miss a day or two and still be on track. Or you can use it to review for exams. Failed my first Calc class and had to drop. This guy taught me calc and got me an A.
Ramsey has the most refined, interactive, and fun lecture style I have ever seen. He has the the ability to connect mathematics to such common experiences that recitation become unnecessary. I would take again.
He posts lectures and notes to Carmen which is wonderful. Was very helpful during office hours.
i stopped going to lecture after the first couple weeks. he records letters though so if you have time, watch them. he's alright though. the math department is just difficult on its own
Great Lecturer! He knows exactly what to tell you to do well on the tests. If you go to lecture everyday and take notes on the problems he gives you will do well in the class. I highly recommend taking his class if you have to take 1151.
Bobby was probably the best professor I have had yet. His lectures were very interesting and clear. He made sure you were prepared for the tests even though they are tough. It is still a lot of work and the tests are made by the math department and very tricky. If you have the option, take his class!!
Dr. Ramsey's lectures were very professional, he was always well prepared for class. However, the way he explained things was very confusing for me. I was able to use the free tutoring services and had to work really really hard and got a good grade. He's also really intimidating and I avoided talking to him at all costs.
I really like this professor. He's kind of an a'hole sometimes, but generally he is brilliant. Definitely recommended
There's no way around the fact that the math dept at OSU is very tough. Not a big fan of Bobby's lecture style, I didn't get a lot out of it. Exams are very difficult, and generally the practice exams are much easier than the real exam will be, so be prepared for that. If you have to take 1151, he's not a bad choice, but good luck with the dept.
Really great lecturer - keeps you interested in the material, and his lectures seem to go by fast just because he's really good at explaining things. He doesn't make/grade the tests/quizzes nor does he assign the HW -- it's all assigned by the OSU math department. HW for math 1151 at OSU is a lot!
Super amazing math professor, always ready for lecture, he is super smart and super clear. sometimes can be too robotic when teaching but that is because he follows prepared material. explains math very well, probably the best calac 1 teacher, he is so smart!
Best lecturer I've ever had. Interesting man. Never had a professor so prepared for each lesson.
Dr. Ramsey is extremely well prepared and is very clear in his lectures. He answers questions well and goes through countless examples in class. In addition, if you miss class, he posts all of his lectures on Carmen online that are available to watch at any time. This professor really understands how to convey material to students!
He's a decent lecturer but really not a decent person. very unapproachable. He posts all lectures online which is really helpful cuz you really don't even need to go to lecture. The one time I tried to ask him a question after class he wouldn't stop interrupting and condescending me. Don't go to him for outside help. Calc department sucks overall
Bobby is an outstanding professor, one of the best instructors I have ever had. Although the Ohio State Math Department is quite difficult, Bobby always does his best to prepare his students for the challenging exams.
I'm not sure why the other recent reviews are so bad, but Bobby is the best math professor you can probably get from the Math Department. He wants students to pass, and lectures are extremely engaging. He allows you to ask questions during and after lecture if you need help. He doesn't make OR grade the exams, but I think he prepares you well.
Very good teacher. I never went to him outside of class for help, but his lectures were very easy to follow and explained the content very well. All of his lectures are online which was very helpful. The problem with the class lies more with the Math Department than Ramesy himself, he is exactly what you want in a lecturer for math.
A really good professor. He taught Calculus I in a very understandable fashion. I understood everything he explained in lecture, and much of what he explained appeared on the homework and midterms/exams.
He is a great professor. Energetic and loves math. He might rub some people the wrong way, but he really does care about students. The Math Department sucks as a whole, and the exams have been difficult relative to previous years, but Ramsey prepares you well. Make sure to use the tutor rooms! They're free and open most of the day.
1151 is a difficult class but that is the department's fault. Bobby is an oddball, but he makes calc lectures fun. Lectures are posted online so you can miss them and not fall behind. You don't need the textbook, but you do need a MML access code (can be purchased separately).
Math 1151 is a hard class but I believe Ramsey is a good lecturer. The math department makes the final, midterms, quizzes, etc. There is really only so much Bobby can teach about the test material. The best way to get a good grade is to do book problems even though the textbook isn't required. The final class grade was curved approx. 3 percent.
An inspirational math teacher. He is very logical while taking lecture and answering questions.
Math 1151 is definitely a weed-out class, but Bobby gives you the best chance at passing. His lectures are available online and are extremely useful to use as I can't take good notes with how quickly he teaches (this isn't his fault; the curriculum is intense for this course). He's accessible outside of class and cares about his students. A++ prof.
No matter what professor you take for Calculus at Ohio State, the class is going to be ridiculously difficult. However, Ramsey is at least a very clear lecturer who explains things well and in detail. He posted video links to all of his lectures online which was super helpful if you miss class or just need to go over a concept again. Recommend.
The clearest math teacher I have ever met! Awesome!
Bobby Ramsey is the sole reason I passed Calc 1. After never taking Calc in high school, I was in for a surprise in this class. However, Bobby teaches the material so clearly and efficiently that if you pay attention, you can get a good grade in this class. He goes above and beyond in teaching harder questions that those on the midterms
Bobby's lectures were so clear. It really helped when it came for studying for the final when I forgot a few things and could re-watch the lecture. I definitely would recommend going to the actually lectures. Math 1151 wasn't that bad with Bobby. The only thing that people complain about is the test, which he DOESN'T create. Bobby made me like math
Bobby Ramsey was an excellent Calc 1 prof. He delivered excellent lectures and I greatly appreciated them. However, I took Calc in high school, so I earned an A without much difficulty.
Really enthusiastic lecturer. He certainly livens up the lecture room for those who may find the material dry.
He made the content understandable, was available to answer questions after class, and worked with me when I had a scheduling conflict for one of the exams.
Bobby really cares about his students. If you go talk to him one on one about a bad test grade, he will do what he can do help you. He would always answer every question in lecture with care, even if it was a "dumb" question. Overall, he was a good professor that made things clear and made my first math course at OSU not bad at all.
Pretty good lecturer, explains things very well, always answers questions
Easy A if you study.
Hes a really good lecturer but he talks fast and all of the information is extremely important, even to the last second of class. New topics are regularly introduced in the last 5-10 minutes of class. Hes very receptive to questions at appropriate times during the lecture
I wouldn't say that any calculus is an EASY A, closer to "Lets just pass" but bobby was for sure very helpful. If you reach out to him and go to office hours he will try his best to help you.
Great teacher, hard class.
He is really a responsible professor. You can always ask questions during the class or office time. He always presents the content clearly, and leads us step by step. Just do practice before quizzes and exams.
Taught the material well during the lectures. It did get boring sometimes but that is the nature of the class. Got an A- in Calc 1 in his class without really any studying. If I had tried, or attended the recitations, I would have gotten an A probably.
Professor Ramsey is a fantastic teacher. His lectures are great. He keeps your attention the whole class and gives great explanations and examples. He speaks very clearly and posts most of his notes and lectures online. He really cares about how his students do in his class and is easily available for questions.
Ramsey was a great lecturer and I'm glad to have gotten to take him. He puts effort into what he does and truly wants to see all of his students succeed.
Bobby was a great lecturer and really cared about students understanding the material. He often uses Top Hat and walks around the class to answer questions. The Top Hat questions are not for points. If someone asks a question he will thoroughly explain it in a way you can understand. DON'T BE LATE to class if you choose to go, it irritates him.
Very boring class. Throws a lot of tricks at you on the test. Very nice guy, not my favorite class. Not an easy class
Professor Ramsey is a great professor and he did a good job for the lecture. His lecture is easy to follow and not tougha at all. The only reason that I got an B+ is because of the exam. The exam is all about the lecture materials but not easy to get full marks.
Talk to him after midterms about things you missed. If there was a mistake hell give points back AND YOULL NEED THOSE POINTS
I failed Calc before and had to re-take. Calc department at OSU is HORRIBLE. They expect way too much. Grade is 90% exam-based. Don't take unless you absolutely have to. But if you do TAKE BOBBY. He teaches in a way that's easy to understand, teaches multiple approaches, and gets ALL of the subject matter in. Awesome prof. Doesn't get any better.
This class was very challenging. Would not recommend if you have no previous calc knowledge. However, Bobby isn't a bad professor. Lectures are too easy compared to the exams, but that is because the math department sets you up to do poorly. Overall I think Bobby is a good option for this class if you have to take it.
Ramsey made a really difficult subject seem really simple the way he broke concepts down during lectures. He's fun and energetic and makes math not boring. If you have to take this class, I highly recommend him!
Let me tell you, I was not happy to see Bobby by the second week of his lectures. I once showed up to a midterm 3 minutes before it was going to begin, and he made me move to the front and started the exam before I could sit down. I'm a good student, and did well in his course, but he was always very rude to me anyway, and I did not appreciate it.
First off-avoid taking calc at OSU altogether. Ive never experienced something so difficult for no reason in my life. I received an A in the class and that was because of Bobby. If you have to take calc at osu TAKE BOBBY! Id taken calc in high school for 2 years, but he definitely has the best approach. Countless people fail calc at osu.
Great Professor, but just a lot of homework and studying for his class. He teaches calc well, but quizzes are very challenging.
I never enjoyed math before, and while that didn't change too much with this class, Professor Ramsey at least made some calculus concepts very interesting. Despite the pandemic, he was really understanding of the fact some people may need a little refresher on certain topics and never hesitated to answer even the seemingly "dumb" questions.
Bobby is the absolute greatest!!!!
This class was definitely challenging, but Professor Ramsey was very accommodating. Lecture videos were helpful, but most face time was over zoom with my TA. Still, when I came to Prof Ramsey with issues I was having in class, he was extremely flexible and understanding. There are a LOT of homework assignments and the class is pretty time consuming
This man is a complete jerk. He is rude and does not take inconsideration of how students feel with the pace. I probably will not pass this class but fingers crossed. Be aware what happens in lecture is barely on the exams. He called my class stupid....
calc department is notoriously bad at osu, but ramsey has very weel set up lectures that are easy to follow. as long as you do the homework and take decent notes during lecture it's easy to do well
Super hard class but Bobby made it bearable. This was my 2nd go around and he truly was better than my last professor. Try to get him if you can!!
Awful teacher if you can avoid having him do it. His lectures are so boring and do not keep you engaged at all. His grading is awful and he is not forgiving at all and not willing to understand mistakes and give points back.
Bobby is super condescending when you ask questions. The lectures are very simple and straightforward, but the midterms dont really relate sometimes. He is definitely rude though.
We have not seen this guy once this entire semester, the only teacher we see is the TA. The course is terribly organized and heavy on pointless online homework instead of more class time. It is very hard to learn anything in this calculus course and the grading is terrible on the written homework and the frequent midterms.
There’s a LOT of homework and typically the homework is nothing like the exams. Prof Ramsey is a good lecturer and he explains things well however don’t ask questions because he’s very condescending when answering. The exams have sample midterms that are usually very similar so I would practice those.
Prof Ramsey said on the first day that this was the first and last time we would ever see him. Assigned flipped & flexible modules for our lectures so basically had to teach ourselves everything. 12 assignments due every tues/thurs and exams/worksheets due Mondays. Recitation is pointless but attendance is graded (only reason people show).
He's straight to the point and clear in every lecture. I recommend you take Math 1140/1141 because you learn at a much more reasonable pace when compared to Math 1151 (you learn the same content over 2 semesters instead of one).
I took his flipped-and-flexible version of Calculus 1 and enjoyed it. It is extremely nice for people who can't attend a 1 hour lecture multiple times a week and need to work on their work throughout the day.
Clear lectures, straightforward exams. As a person, Bobby is definitely rude and thinks hes better than his students. But at the end of the day, that doesnt really matter for a college course, so Id recommend. Just dont ever ask for help or clarification, go to the TA (much nicer!!).
Pretty good class, tough but doable, the professor makes it easier to understand but it was a struggle for sure. Tests aren't anything like the in class work or homework though.
Great Calc I professor. It's 1151 so expect the class to be hard and a lot of work. Overall, Ramsey made the content easy to understand.
I am not good at math actually, but prof Ramey makes it easy to understand. If you need to take 1151 in OSU, I strongly recommend you to take his class.
Bobby makes sure to teach you everything fully and does a well job doing so. However, you will almost undoubtedly lose points for not wording things the exact way he wants you to and take away points for reasons outside of math.
Great instructor. Spells everything out for you and will help you learn. Homework is easy and tests can be difficult. The hard part isn't the math but you must explain everything and show ALL work, you can't skip steps or use alternate methodology, you MUST use what was discussed in lecture.
Very thoughtful professor but tends to go through lecture material extremely quickly. If you get stuck on a concept make sure that you learn it before the next class or you will go down an endless rabbit hole of having to learn the entire sections before the exams. Lots of midterms but not worth that much of your grade.
Amazing!!!!!
I took MAth 1140 to get a deeper understanding of calculus as an engineer. While he gives okay lectures and multiple homework quizzes per week, he wasn't a very hard teacher. He and the TA are very different graders and your grades on exams and written homework will reflect that. Also, he continues to post practice assignments without answers.
The class is organized, and he teaches very well. However, he is arrogant and does not reply to emails at all, so do not bother to email him for problems you have. He does not accept any kind of responsibility for his TA(graders) and It has a tough grading role,
Professor Ramsey is an excellent lecturer, along with my TA Juan Pablo De Resis. Both are extremely friendly to student and responds to emails very quickly. Professor Ramsey always posts recordings of lectures, complete notes, and many many practice exams to help with the review process. Best Calc 1 teacher here at OSU in my opinion.
Dr. Ramsey has been the best professor I've had as a freshmen at OSU because he's genuinely willing to help you succeed in the class. Also, he has helped me a lot throughout the semester class and he responds to your emails in less than 2-3 hours which is awesome when you're solving problems and have questions. Overall, I'll suggest him for Calc 1.
Dr. Ramsey truly cares about teaching and making his students learn. His standards-based class does seem difficult at times, but it does set help set a clear path of what exactly you should do to get the grade you want. His office hours are greatly helpful. Lectures are unconventional and involve very important group activities and discussions.
Professor Booby is a really good teacher who supported students to ask more questions during the class. I'll recommend the TA Mejia Cordero Julian, his office hour always help me to figure out issues.
Dr.Ramsey is a great professor who just happens to be teaching a very hard class. I did not fully utilize the resources, and still did alright, but I think that the calc curriculum here is going to be difficult no matter who you have. My only tip is to study the most recent sample midterms only, as the earlier ones are often outdated. Good luck!
Dr.Ramsey made Calculus 1 quite an easy and straightforward class. If I had any questions he would answer them right after class or I would go to his office hours. I took his 3 day-week course that were an hour and thirty minutes long and had weekly guideposts instead of midterms.
Professor Ramsey is an amazing professor, and his Standards-Based MATH 1151 is quite difficult for those who aren't particularly math-minded. I struggled but was able to get meaningful support from him outside of class.
He's amazing as a person and also as a professor. My favorite thing about him is the way he keeps student engaged in lectures instead of boring them out.
The structure of 1151 at OSU is a little strange. He does have a quiz every friday but if you stay ahead, you only have to answer the questions with new topics. His lectures are pretty boring but its not too bad.
I had already had experience in calculus before taking his class, so I had very few issues with the content, but I really enjoyed his style of teaching. His lectures are very useful as he takes time to thoroughly explain each topic, and then walks through an example, and then has you try an example. My only complaint is that he acts very sassy.
Great guy who actually cares. I didn't like the class at first because the material was difficult (duh) but he gives super useful explanations. Don't come to class expecting to zone out. Do every problem he puts on the board and tells you to, ask questions, and you'll do fine. Tests Fridays, but they aren't hard. 50% math 50% explanation of method.
This was my third time taking calculus and I was beginning to worry I wasn't cut out for it, which would mean changing my major. Professor Ramsey explained things differently from any teacher or professor I had before, and I actually started to understand the course material. Now I have an A- and feel confident going into next semester.
He can explain knowledge, but he is not a good professor as he put too many time on the guidepost and be really strict on guiding it. People always complain about its score although their explanation is almost perfect. Math is not just explain, its a key to understand lots of subjects and new knowledge.
Bobby Ramsey lectures like hes talking to himself. He degrades students that ask questions and proves the septum ring theory true. I always have to teach myself the content. The grading for the TAs is so BS all or nothing on gradescope. He knows the material but we don't bc this guy teaches like hes talking to his close personal friend not freshman
Professor Ramsey is a great teacher teaching a hard class. A lot of people are quick to judge, but his lectures are extremely informative. He goes through everything in detail, and always answers any questions. He is a little odd sometimes (might be on the spectrum), and can come across as rude or condescending, but it's easy to get past that.
He does not explain topics very well and snaps back anytime you ask him a question. Overall, very condescending. Check off as many standards on the weekly quizzes as you can early on because they can pile up and make it very hard to succeed. Very hard grader on the quizzes and marks the entire question wrong if one word is left out of explanation.
Grading divided so well. Professor Ramsey made calculus super easy and I've never taken calculus before. do the practice exams. So many grades get dropped including one exam grade and homework assignments. offered up to 2 percent extra credit for two surveys and a precalc quiz.
