i grew up with one of her kids and she is by far the most vibrant and cheerful person i know. this carries over into her teaching style and she's very effective and positive. i took a class from her a few year ago and recommend her VERY much.
Funny prof. Take her for an easy A... kind of scatterbrained though.
This class was so interesting and applicable to EVERYONES life. She is easy, fun and this class is so intriging. I loved going to this class, I never found my brain wondering because she always kept my attention. Reccomended to any type of person!!!!!!!!!

Definitely one of the better professors I've had.
She is the kind of person everyone wants to be friends with, and the kind of teacher every student wants to learn from.
The thing is, she is really unclear about how she grades and what things are worth. She curves big time too, which really doesn't help anyone, if she didn't we'd probably all have A's. Shes a good person and funny and the class was interesting, but i have no idea what kind of grade i will get.

Talks a mile a minute! Class is never boring. Lots of random activites. Grading is stricter than expected though. She looks for specific things but keeps it hidden until afterwards so you never really know if what you turned in was acceptable.
She was awesome and made class fun to be in. She does a good job getting the class to participate and she has a lot of knowledge to share. Overall she and the class is one people should take sometime in college it can teach you a lot.
fun, but extremely disorganized. often didn't get papers returned, and had no clue about grade in 7th week of term.
She bases grades entirely on whether she likes you or not. She never responds to her e-mail. This communcations teacher can not communicate to save her life.
It is an okay class, but her grading is purely subjective. Like it said below, no clue on your grade until the end of the term. The more you talk, the more ass you kiss, and it is amazing how your grade will go up. Her test kind of suck too. Good part is that she is a nice person.
Not gonna lie..heard good things, wasn't impressed. uses her opinion to judge most activities. fakes interest in comments made by the class. plays favorites toward athletes, students she knows, or guys. won't know your grade until the end..don't forget to check syllabus or you will miss deadlines. all important stuff is due the last week of class
I really learned a lot from her class, not because of the material but by watching her speak. She is a good speech teacher, and I feel pretty confident about speaking in front of people now. I'm glad I took her, but she does grade atheletes higher, and has favorites. I should have had an A but I got a B. If I would have made jokes, I would get an A
Material was great and she's a good teacher, but the grading is suspicious: don't get much feedback, lots of subjective points, and many group projects in a curved class where in you're in direct competition with each other for grades; you won't know your grade till the end and by then she's thrown out all the papers (you can't keep returned ones).
She was really interesting and fun! I really liked coming to class and everyone got along. She was pretty fair on assignments but I really enjoyed the class so that was what mattered most to me.
Great teacher, but gives hard tests.
She has total favorites and totally fakes interest in peoples stories and comments. Grades based on whether she personally likes you. There was interesting lecture materials but class activities were ridiculous and a huge waste of my valuable time, take the class from someone else.
Definitely has favorites, especially athletes. Sucking ass is necessary. Her grading really doesn't have any point, as you don't get to see what her criteria are at all. It is an interesting subject though, and she does a decent job keeping you interested.
suck butt the moment you step into her class ..very subjective grading...interesting topic but very disorganized
The negative comments before were right on the money. She is very subjective in her grading. Be prepared for a very superficial teacher and to kiss alot of butt. Read the text, go to class and you should do well on the tests but don't be suprised that your grade doesn't reflex how you did in the course. ie)point totals
Won't be able to tell you your grade until it's final. Doesn't let you make up anything. Is very vague on the whole grading process.

I would not take another class with her if at all possible. She is VERY unclear about grading and I still have no idea what she will give me, even though I have asked about 4 times. She gave me a very vague answer "youll do just fine" what! She drives me nuts- I could keep going but really just avoid her....
Does not have a concrete grading scale. Very vague. Bases grades on if she likes you or not, not the work you do. Gives mostly C's.
I would not recommend this teacher!!!! AVOID getting her as a teacher. She is fun and friendly but in the end you have no control over your grade and will never know what it is until the end of the term. Plus side: don't need the textbook in 111 or 218.
Horrible teacher. Unless you are taking this class for fun, I WOULD NOT recommend her. She doesn't know what she's teaching.
Ms. Bushnell comes off as a great teacher because she gives great presentations in class, gets us involved with fun activities, and has good stories. However,I did not like the format of her quizzes and felt that she graded pretty unfairly. She seems two faced. And dont buy the book! You dont need it!
good professor. lectures are good. exams are alright. there were questions that she did not covered during the lectures. so i recommend reading the textbook just in case.
This professor is absolutely ridiculous She has favorites in the class Has an unclear grading scale.. doesn't tell you your grade until final grades are out and fakes an interest in what you have to say Quizzes are poorly formatted I went to 95% of classes read the book and studied and somehow got a C- even though all my grades were A's
I have absolutely no idea what these people are talking about. Bobette is AMAZING. I genuinely looked forward to going to class. We did fun activities almost every day, and she did a great job making the material interesting and appealing to her students. Dr. Bushnell, I love you.
Overall shes an alright teacher. She teaches in a giant lecture all so you don't really learn much about her only the stuff she covers. This class solely depends on your TA, I lucked out an had Anna who I highly recommend. I don't know much about the other TA but be safe and go with Anna.
Grade is based on whether your T.A likes you or not. Lectures are rushed and the tests didnt reflect anything we learned. Just suck up to your T.A and you will get an A+, express your opinion and you will get a D
great teacher and a really fun class. But you will get a B ... for no reason at all
Class was worthless but not unpleasant. She seems like a fine teacher but the material was basically an analysis of expert speeches rather than a good program for learning how to give them. Too much theory not enough practice. Tests were easy, but as an A student I got a C+ because my TA was petty and annoying. This class all depends on your TA.
I was NOT impressed with her. The lectures were boring and useless as far as the final grade. Grade came solely from your TA and I had a crap TA! Bushnell said um every other word and did NOT teach well. Exams were easy but overall I was extremely disappointed in her as a prof
She was an awesome teacher. Very interesting lectures and great activities. SHe talks a little fast but it keep you on your toes and keeps you listening.
She's a wonderful teacher. Very genuine and the sweetest lady. There is a mixture of lectures and activities. She definitely talks fast but it's not a bad thing. She's great!
Boring as hell. Wouldn't post the lecture slides online, so if you miss a class and can't find someone with the notes, you're screwed. Majority of the grade comes from your TA, who can be either a decent, kind-hearted person who believes in the good nature of humanity... or the person I got...
This class (like the department itself) is a complete joke--"let's "learn" how to talk and call it a viable academic"--but most people taking this do so cause it's required so what can you do? Bushnell is good enough. Just take notes and you'll be fine for the lecture. Recitation is what you really have to worry about. I pray you don't get Taliesin
she is so poor, talking all the time without stopping unless for activities, she ask new information on the test and depends on curves which helps her to not discuss any grading issue with her, when you talk a lot, she will gave you good grade. There was not textbook and no information expect her family news.
This class was a joke. Bushnell showed up late to almost every class, including the day of our midterm and final. The information she provided was all common sense. I bought the book and never opened it once. She does not post the lecture slides, but her course packet of notes doesn't follow her lecture anyway. Really disorganized.
I'm a Comm major and will say this class was absolutely worthless. It was once a week 50 min and she spent the first 20 min of each class trying to figure out her powerpoints. Information is all common sense, but midterm and final have a bunch of stuff she doesn't really talk about in class.
She is a good professor, however the course is a joke. Even though it's a SPEECH class, 50% of your final grade is from exams. She is a good speaker, but the TA's who grade our speeches in the recitations are absolutely terrible. How can you expect to learn and be graded from someone who cant speak well themselves? But engineers gotta take it...
Not flexible or considerate at all. Use book very little. Loves the athletes in the class. Really favors them. Does a bit of gay bashing in the class I was in. Did not like her at all.
ehhh... she didn't contribute much to the class. It was all common sense she talked about. but then we were tested on random info that really didn't matter when it comes to being a good public speaker. But if you study the notes and work hard on your speeches you will do fine.
She goes fast during lecture, but a note outline is provided and you basically fill in the blanks. She'll drop hints as to which stuff will be on the midterm and final which is nice. Read the book! To ace the exams, memorize. For speeches, hope for an easy TA. Mine, Amanda Granrud was nice, but not the easiest grader.
Class was very fun to go to, there were a lot of activities, and the topic was interesting. There are 3 quizzes, a final, 10 one page papers, a 5 page paper, and a group project. I procrastinated but still did well. I recommend this class to anyone.
Only take about 14 pages of notes all term, so the midterm/final isn't over much, yet they were still like 60 MC questions plus writing. Overall, not too hard. TAs are fair, practice your speech more than once and you'll be fine.
I dont know why we need midterm and final for speaking class.
I agree she is very friendly but unflexible. Her grading is extremely unpredictable and not set on any certain guidelines. It is EXTREMELY hard to figure out what she wants and asking her may confuse you more. If you value your GPA, this course may not a good idea.
She is a genuine, exciting, and intelligent teacher. She does talk fast (and admits it too) because she feels that students learn better when professors talk faster. Activities in class are fun. She is unclear when it comes to describing assignments. Course work is relatively light, unless you wait until the end of the term to finish everything.
Bobette is a great teacher for this course. She is very animated about what she discusses during class because this is her favorite communications class to teach. She has us do class activities which make lectures less boring, plus she relates class to everyday life which makes it very interesting! Loved this class and was never hesitant to show up
Prof is extremely boring in class and talks way to fast. Claims it keeps kids more focused so their minds can't wander... (not true.) Doesn't post lecture notes online, gives outline in course packet which skips parts, missing pages, doesn't follow lecture. Hard to know what is necessary. Not enough material for 9 lectures that were planned.
No guidelines at all, grading makes no sense whatsoever. She did not give us any guidelines on the group project, then after we had all presented she listed off all the things we did wrong which would have been nice to know before the project was due. Ultimately, this class is a waste of time with her teaching it.
Very unorganized workbook. Missing items and pages. Don't use a workbook if you aren't going to do it right.
Dr. Bushnell is one of my favorite professors. Given my class is only 20 students or so, she works really hard to make sure everyone understands. She's very personable and has a likable quality!
This course is far more more work then 4 credits. It is basically impossible to pass. The quizzes make no sense and the grading makes even less sense. If you want to spend your entire term doing pointless activities and writing an OBSCENE amount (I'm a writing minor and say that), then go for it. But I will never take a class from her again.
She has you buy this workbook which is supposed to have notes from her lectures in it, but it is missing multiple sections and is completely unorganized. She talks way too fast at the lectures too. I did great with speeches in the Rec. class, but then doing the tests was ridiculous. Unrelated, unorganized, and unprepared from lectures.
This class is a massive workload. The instructor gives assignment instructions that are vague and then grades strictly. If you write too little, she tells you to include more detail. When you include more detail she says its too long. She rarely responds to email. Also, multiple mistakes on the final exam and mistakes in grading. Try to avoid!
If you value your grade don't take this class. Probably one of the worst courses you can take with a terrible professor.
This course is far more work then 3 credits. Do NOT take this course from Bushnell. VERY unclear expectations. lectures/workbook/slides and assigned readings do not match. slides are from 2011. No guidelines at all, grading makes no sense whatsoever. Her grading is extremely unpredictable, not set on any certain guidelines. extremely disappointed!
Lecture is mandatory, she will give test questions in lecture. Homework is straight out of the book. Lectures are fairly interesting, DO THE EXTRA CREDIT IN CLASS. Speeches are the vast majority of your points, learn outlines.
This teacher is a tough grader, inconsistent, unclear, doesn't grade correctly, and doesn't allow enough time for quizzes. This teacher doesn't grade or assign quizzes fairly either. Its sad to feel like she doesn't want her students to succeed. This class is extremely unenjoyable and I would advise anyone to avoid taking this class.
Worst professor I have ever encountered. Grammar is atrocious, does not give full credit for anything, gives 10 minutes to complete 13 question fill in the blank quizzes, expects a 10 page paper, a 6 page paper, a group project and a write up, weekly half page papers, weekly discussions... I have no idea how Oregon State justifies her employment.
Prof. Bushnell is unclear in her expectations, provides you with vague instructions, and grades you down without explanation. There is a GROUP PROJECT and a proctored final exam (and lots more). 80% of the points do not come until AFTER week 7 so commit to that SU early. Fill-in-the-blank quizzes at 36-40 seconds per question. HEAVY WORKLOAD.
Dr. Bushnell's lectures were clear and easy to understand. The midterm and final are directly off the notes, so I recommend attending class. The biggest thing that bothered me was that she did half of the lectures, then handed the rest of them off to the TA's and didn't even attend those ones. Overall, I didn't much care for the class.
Opened up the class late, notes packet was late, did not respond to email. Vague in directions. Tests have unexpected information. Does not interact with class. Grading makes no sense, one week I get a great job, the next week where I put more effort in, I get a try harder next time with an 812. She is awful, do not take this class!
One of my least favorite professors, she skips random content from the book that she disagrees with, didn't give us a syllabus schedule until the third or fourth week, everything is turned in at the end so no feedback, requires a group project, rambles quickly without saying much at all, lectures resemble high school... would not recommend
Inconsistent grading. Gives good grade one week then writes a positive comment but give low grade the next week. Unclear expectations- her explanations are vague and she will not try to clarify if you ask. Huge workload -far more than expected for a 3 credit course. Group project is impossible. Seems she doesn't want students to be successful.
Don't take this class. It's way too much work for what this class should be. Even if you do all of the work, it's impossible to get a decent grade because her expectations are so vague and yet she grades really harshly. I got half credit for being too vague one week, and half credit for being too detailed the next. Incredibly frustrating.
Talks really fast and it is hard to understand her bc english is not my first language. If you're and international student you'll find it hard sometimes. Bit she's funny. I don't know why the tests are the way they are. She gives the questions for the midterm And the final but it is still hard
Mandatory group project for this class. If you are taking it online and you don't know anyone in the class then it is very hard to communicate with each other about the project. Tests go by very quickly and are on any material you have learned up to that point. Final was focused on a few topics so if you don't know them well then you wont pass
great teacher! funny lectures with good stories! only entertaining lecture i've had at OSU.
her class was not very organized, and it seemed to me that every TA had his/her own agenda. Depending on the TA you had, the class was very different. The curriculum varied on however they wanted to teach it. I don't recommend this class. Once the prof monitors what goes on during recitation there might be some hope to doing well in it.
She grades on a curve and will say that she can't give you your grade throughout the course, which was not helpful at all. The lectures are very interesting and relatable, but the material and style of testing is very vague.
Not a good organizer. Lecture material was often vague and did not follow the book. Tests are poorly written and often draw from information not covered in class. I really liked my TA though, her name was Anna Anderson and she was very helpful. If you do well on the speeches and OK on the tests, it would be hard not to pass
This class is very unclear and poorly organized. She gave us two syllabuses, one in week 2 or 3 and another week 7 because the first one was incorrect. She goes off on personal stories during lecture, grades tests weird and thinks you should know all material like the back of your hand. Beware: bulk of points are turned in at the end of the term.
Choose any other professor. Also, the textbook you have to buy is written by her, which she gets kickbacks for.
She only lectured for the first half of the term and then let her TA's do the rest. Lectures are short and only once a week. If you do well on your speeches and have a 95% going into the final, you don't have to take it. Overall, just an average public speaking class.
Don't skip classes, especially lecture. All of the exam info comes from mass lecture. You don't need the textbook but you do need the workbook made by Dr. Bushnell. Speeches are graded easy as long as you do the requirements listed for each.
It's ironic in interpersonal comm. I had no idea what my grade was until the very end and even then it was a surprise. She promotes stereotypes. Her final held no relevance to material taught. She grades on a curve because many do not do well on the assignments. I didn't learn anything and highly suggest taking different class that is worthwhile
I would never take this class again. Not only were the lectures bad (she only taught the first half of the term), but the grading is not clear, some TAs are easier than others, and it's just generally unorganized. This class is something many are required to take and I don't feel like I actually learned anything that I can use. Don't take this clas
Quite possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. Her lectures sounded like she was going off of her memory of a pop science book she read 30 years ago. Avoid at all costs
Bushnell is so self absorbed it was hard to listen to her. I learned nothing from her, and upon asking other students, neither did they. And her side kick, michele hewlitt was worse. how they stay relevant in the communication department is beyond me. make sure you sign up with one of the men in the department if you want to learn.
Bobette was so rude and was not a fair grader. Also she never posted anything on Canvas so you didn't know what your final grade was until the very end.
She was so unclear on every assignment, you had no idea what you were doing most of the time. Considered a C on the presentation as average performance, which is unfair if you try your best. She hasn't told us our grades for anything. I took this for a bacc core class, it shouldnt have been this hard. Like she likes to give out bad grades.
Talks extremely fast and doesn't go over things in much depth. Only taught half the lectures and had the recitation teachers teach the rest, while she just sat around for the rest of the term, wearing sunglasses indoor.
Comm 218 was honestly the most fun class I have taken at OSU. In class work is mostly group discussion and games with a bit of notes sprinkled in. Dr. Bushnell is extremely nice. Negatives of this class are that Bushnell cannot tell you your grade, and can't post it, so you have no idea where you stand in the class ever. Also, the quizzes are hard.
Only taught for half the term and had her TAs teach the other half. This class is tolerable if u have an easy TA (who grades easy). Materials from the lectures r on the tests. Everything I learned in this class was not helpful.
Bushnell does nothing all term. We saw two prerecorded video lecture by her and the rest were made by TAs. The TA you have for your recitation is the only instructor that matters. Most of the information in lectures is either super obvious or completely useless. The midterm and final ask weirdly specific and subjective questions.
For someone who has been around the comm department for so long, she is a terrible communicator (doesnt even respond to emails) and gives incredibly vague directions for assignments. Then, she grades assignments super tough and marks students down for arbitrary reasons. Would 10/10 recommend you do not take her classes.
For a communications course, it was weird to me that there was zero synchronous contact. Emailed back pretty quickly but not always sure my issue was remembered to be resolved. Quick to get grades back to you. Overall, pretty decent course and kind!
Took this course online. Absolutely the most pretentious, useless, anguishing class I've taken. Lectures are posted for one hour only and never seen again, and the tests require you to relay the smallest details from those lectures verbatim. All tests use Proctorio and the speeches are graded incredibly harshly. Class only exists to tank your GPA.
There is an attitude of "This is the most important class you'll ever take in College" that is unbefitting of a 100-level introductory course. During the recitations, the TAs don't have enough time to go over specific questions about our speeches, they can only provide general info on what they're looking for. Would not recommend.
This is a 3 credit class, but I don't think anyone told the professor that. Assignment expectations are poorly communicated and the grading comments are not constructive, so you have no idea what she wants you to do to improve. I got marked down for accidentally doing an extra assignment...
I do not recommend anyone serious about learning interpersonal communications take this class with Bobette Bushnell. He does not provide thorough feedback and does not comprehensively review your projects. He doesn't care about his students.
This is one of the most pretentious classes I've taken. Yes, public speaking is important. However, it does not warrant such an egotistical teaching style. Be prepared to follow restrictive templates and a "my way or the high-way" policy. To make this all worse, you must buy her textbook, which adds little to the class and is a scam.
This was the worst, most time-wasting course I have ever taken. This class has an extensive focus on memorizing vocabulary words. These terms are often completely irrelevant. It's poorly organized and poorly graded, please just take something else.
I'm rating the "professor" but really she does not do anything, it is only her TA's. This class has online lectures posted, 2/8 have Bushnell in them, and you have to buy HER course guide and textbook for the class. Basically every recitation you perform a speech. The midterm was heavily based off of vocab and minor details from the online lectures
Where do I even start. The only redeeming quality of this class was the TA.. Other than that this class was terrible. The textbooks contradicts what is said in the lecture, the course guide is a waste of money and just there to scam students. Bushnell is super egotiscical. The midterm and final ask subjective and specific question. Terrible.
Like others have said, the only redeeming part about this course is the TAs (if you have a good one). You are given a textbook and have to memorize vocabulary for the midterm and test. However, none of it is relevant for speech preparation. The TAs saw the overwhelming amount of problems with this course and gave everyone extra credit.
She's really the only choice for COMM 111, so she straight up has a monopoly and scams pretty much everyone who's required to take the class. You gotta pay north of 90 bucks for her useless textbook and course guide, which is extra to the tuition cost. She never even bothered to hold actual lectures, just recordings. Straight up awful class.
Dr. Bushnell did the first two lectures and left everything else up to the TAs, some of which I couldn't stand to listen to (how ironic). Exams included tiny pieces of information that were barely even mentioned in lectures. I think the class was a little easier since I took it remotely, and I was able to see my grades throughout the term.
Professor is literally the most egotistical person I have met. The textbooks are a scam. $40 for a workbook that is only used for grading sheets for the teacher. Teaches public speaking which is ironic because she will talk about how the course is the best bacc core and rephrase is 5 times before she actually teaches the class.
Worst class I have taken. She is egotistical person who does not even teach anything related to the course. Getting a good grade is mainly luck and having a good TA. The midterm and final are the most subjective tests ever and contradict what she says in lecture. Worst of all the midterm and final are based on the most random small details.
Tough grader and tough feedback. There was no rubric to grade off of and the syllabus was not organized. I would not take her again.
Awful class. Bushnell grades things ridiculous ways for no reason, syllabus is awful, lectures don't make sense, and content is bland. The big assignments had zero description to go off of and then she graded people down with no explanation. Barely anything was taught all term but the final had all these things we never learned. Horrible experience
This class is an acute perspective of western cultural interaction neglecting to see the intersectional nature of college student culture. There is a lot of gender assumption and if one identifies as trans or nonbinary you will be misgendered and she interchanges gender and sex, the textbook on the other hand does acknowledge the difference.
The recitation leaders are actually graduate students which are common in universities with graduate programs. The recitation leaders are great, I really like being in recitation, but Bobette seems like she doesn't want to be there. The textbook and the lectures do NOT match up and the lectures are mostly useless.
I loved this class, it was engaging and fun. The only con is that you don't know your grade till the end, it has a lot due at the end (not hard),has massive curve. So if you participate and pay attention you'll be fine. I thought she was nice and looked forward to the class. She seems like a tough grader but curves it. Easy A. Don't buy textbook
The midterm for this class is ridiculous. The wording and questions where not reasonable.
Your entire grade in this class depends on your TA because she only does the lectures and your TA will grade everything. You will need the workbook ($20) as is has all the fill in the blank lecture notes and speech grading sheets, but you don't need the actual textbook (THAT SHE WROTE) quizzes are common sense. Class isn't hard, just annoying.
Super boring lectures, recitation is where you actually do the speeches. The content is basically common sense but she twists it so that its hard for no reason. There is a midterm and final, both were medium difficulty (without studying) If you have a 94% you dont have to take the final. dont buy the textbook, but you will need the workbook
horrible class. Lectures don't make sense. Professor barely teaches. Need a good TA to pass class. Final is based off of lectures only, but there is no way to access the lecture powerpoints or notes. The midterm and final are very subjective, barely on the content learning in recitations or on the textbook. Don't buy the textbook, it is barely used
Dr. Bushnell really doesn't do anything but lecture, what really matters is your TA. The TAs are the ones you will actually interact with. If you have a good TA the class is relatively easy. The exams are entirely based on her lectures but the bulk of your grade will come from your speeches which you do in recitation with your TAs.
Bobette to be honest isn't even the best public speaker herself and only gives 1/2 the lectures. The textbook isn't necessary for the class and you can find a PDF online. Mass lecture is only good to prepare for the midterm/final. Everything else depends on your studio instructor, they grade your speeches which make up for 65% of your grade.
Bobette makes you buy her notebook for the class (that she wrote). You also "need" to buy her textbook (that she also wrote). Do yourself a favor and only buy the notebook- you don't really need the textbook. Content is not at all accessible- if you miss a lecture hopefully you have a friend in the class because notes are never posted online.
Makes you buy $40+ worth of books just for 5 pages that you actually need. The lectures she gave were completely useless and the graduate students have to go really fast to give their lectures if they want to get all the info out. Not sure why there's a midterm and final for a class about talking. Do the extra credit, you'll need it.
If you have a good TA, class will be pretty easy. Professor only lectures for first half of term, second half lectures are done by TAs. Lectures are mandatory as slides aren't posted online (take pictures) and the midterm and final are based off of them. Both are subjective for some reason. Textbook is useless, but you do need to buy the workbook.
Do not buy the textbook for this class, it is literally useless. The workbook is all you need. Whether or not you do well in this class entirely depends on your recitation instructor, as they give the mass lectures the majority of the time and are responsible for actually grading your work. Don't skip lectures.
I really did not like Bushnell. With very little notes she makes us take, she makes about all of the exam content on the lectures. You have to get very specific taking note of every single detail in lecture if you want to do well in this class.
Bobette lectures like twice and has the other staff do the rest of them. She does write the midterms and final and they are very hard and barely cover material in the course book. She also assumes that everyone is willingly in the class even though its more or less required. Class not worth taking for anything more than the requirement.
The class was not challenging, but Dr Bushnell does make you buy a textbook and workbook which she wrote, and could easily have been put onto Canvas. She does about two lectures over the semester, which was ok because I preferred the grad students lectures. The test has some very subjective questions, so it is hard to get anything over a B.
Bushnell only lectured for a few week then from there had all the TAs lecture. I would recommend to not buy the textbook and just get the workbook for this class. The textbook was not at all helpful on the midterm, final or any of the mini quizzes. However the workbook is used for Monday lecture as a study guide.
Prof. Bushnell herself isn't a great public speaker. The lectures are pretty much useless, she only teaches 3 and makes the TAs do the rest. Your grade in the class depends on your TA since they're the ones who grade your speeches. Beware of the midterm since it has little to do with public speaking and is meant to trip you up. Don't buy textbooks.
The lectures in this course were so boring and the midterm and final had a lot of trick questions and were unreasonably hard considering most of what we did in class was give speeches. She wasn't terrible though, the class was easy enough to pass. Bulk of course was just taught by whoever your TA was.
Bobette makes you purchase the grading rubric and doesn't post anything online. Don't buy the textbook - you only need it for the 3 or 4 quizzes and there's a copy in the library you can use for free. Lectures are pointless as all material in the class is common sense. She's a pretty bad teacher but the class is easy. Would never take again.
Bobette Bushnell. You're either going to love her or hate her. You WILL need the course guide. The textbook though I haven't touched. There's very little things that will be mentioned that you won't think you'll need to remember but you probably should as it may be on the quizzes. I may add more once the term concludes but I feel like this is good.
completely depends on your TA, Bobette does almost nothing. YOU DON'T NEED THE TEXTBOOK. get it for free from the BNC if you really want. lecture are only for filling in your workbook, get a friend to give you notes. FIND A GOOD QUIZLET! it's all you need to do well on the midterm. if your overall grade is over 92% you don't have to take the final.
Bushnell lectures were unimportant and not worth your time. The lectures were only available in class and not posted online if you have to miss. You were told its required to buy a textbook, but I never touched it. She only taught the class twice before making guest speakers do the rest of her job. Pick a good recitation teacher.
The professor makes you buy her book, which she wrote but isn't needed for the class. The quizzes pertain to nothing taught in lectures or class, and the grading depends on who you have as your TA, which for me was someone brand new to teaching.
The class is entirely taught by your recitation teacher and she stops lecturing after about 2 weeks. The class is considered hybrid, but honestly you don't need to watch the online videos. Do not buy the textbook, it is completely unnecessary for anything in this class, and as long as you can do the 6 speeches you'll be fine. Exams were super easy.
Professor makes you buy textbook which you DO NOT NEED and stops lecturing after the first few weeks. Everything in lecture only pertains to what will be on the midterm and final, and the questions have nothing to do with what you focus on in recitation. The canvas materials are pointless and as long as you do well with the speeches you will be fin
She herself isn't a good public speaker which is a little bit discouraging for a public speaking professor. She has a bit ego and doesn't seem like someone that is approachable whatsoever. She doesn't even lecture after a couple weeks and the class is pretty much entirely run by the recitation instructors.
Bushnell is a major red flag as far as professors go. She runs her class with such entitlement that it's hard to respect her. She acts like her class is the most important you'll ever take when in reality, it's probably the most useless out of every class you take at OSU in the 4 years you're there. Take literally any other speech class.
I don't know why she thinks she can teach, because frankly she can't. You also can't ever miss even a single lecture, because unless you have friends that can send you the notes, you'll never find the slides on canvas, and you'll be screwed for the tests. She's also terrible at responding to emails, so never take any class with her teaching it.
Her tests are AWFUL and her lectures are a waste of time. Bobetta does nothing and your TA is far more important (I recommend Anna or Vave).
Public speaker extraordinaire! Said no one ever.
You would expect that the lead professor in a public speaking class would model effective public speaking during her lectures. Bobette did not. Her visual aids were poor, she lacked enthusiasm, and it was clear she has not updated her examples. If she had given one of her lectures for a grade in my class, she would not have earned an "A".
The absolute worst class at OSU but of course, like all infamous instructors, Bobette starts out by stating that COMM111Z is by far the most important class you will EVER take in your life. Her lectures do not have any meaningful information and she forces you to buy an overpriced textbook that she herself wrote. Harsh exams too!
I had a different teacher for speech recitation, but Bushnell was the main teacher of the department and lecturer who created the course guidlines. Her course is very strict in grading. She makes you buy her own textbook and grading book, and your speeches won't be graded without her rubric. Also, her lectures are very long and boring.
Bobette herself doesn't do anything for the course and you will never cross paths with her. All shes does her push her Mormon beliefs on you and make the midterm/final full of trick questions. Get Clay Williams as a TA. He's great.
I would rather have Darth Vader as a professor for Public Speaking than Bobette Bushnell.
Imagine writing a mandatory textbook filled with complete horsesh*t and then upselling it for a ludicrous price. Then write borderline impossible, closed-book exams with said horsesh*t that students are forced to take for a public speaking class. That is Bobette Bushnell for you. Just look for a good TA because they will be your saving grace.
For a public speaking professor, I expected a better public speaker. Not a woman who cannot get a single coherent sentence out of her mouth. Her exams are brutal and are completely unnecessary for a class about better communication. Apply the practice Mrs. Bobette, not the theory.
What the hell was this class??? I expect an introductory public speaking class to be graded on effort and to give good feedback that helps students improve. Not a costly, mandatory textbook with right-wing ideologies, Mormon philosophies, and communication theory. And the grading was so harsh??? Remove the exams entirely please.
No. The answer is no. Do not take.
She is cruel. Like the witch from Hansel and Gretel who lures kids in with promises!
Avoid this class if you can. The professor's lectures are dull, and the course requires a mandatory textbook filled with questionable content. However, using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the TA's guidance may help you get through this challenging class.
This class is goofy. You're required to buy 2 textbooks by the instructor. The exams are tough and often cover obscure material barely mentioned in lectures. My grade dropped a whole letter for going 30 seconds over on a speech. The content feels niche and seems crafted by Bushnell to sell her poorly written, self-authored book.
WAY TOO DIFFICULT FOR A 100 SERIES CLASS! This teacher prides herself on how hard she makes her tests (midterm + final). She forces you to buy her book because she wrote it and it is very useless. Questions on tests are weird or situational but give no situation. I have heard no one sing praises about this class or teacher. Only take if required.
AVOID IF POSSIBLE! Don't buy the required textbook, get the course guide if you really want to but you can just ask a friend for the notes. The entire midterm and final is just memorizing useless lists of things that was said during the lectures. You don't even need to show up to the lectures, just use Quizlet to study for the tests.
Do not take this class. The lectures and midterms were useless. They were hard for no reason and I learned nothing. I genuinely wanted to improve my public speaking but the classes and lectures did not teach me anything useful.
I'd learn more from a frontal lobotomy. COMM111 is terribly managed, especially for a required class, and does nothing but take your money while making you more cynical and jaded. My TA was great though, but there's only so much she could do with the garbage that makes up this course.
Professor who makes you buy HER textbooks. Tests are UNNECESSARILY TOUGH, I enjoyed speaking and working with my recitation instructor and looked forward to going to those. I would avoid if you don't have to take, simply because the tests are unreasonably difficult and this class will likely not improve your public speaking. WASTE OF TIME.
An otherwise average public speaking class ruined by pointless midterms and final, which are all tests. Test content consists of almost exclusively memorized terms, definitions and miscellaneous information, yet is CLOSED NOTE and does not have a study guide, preparing you for failure. Professor also forces you to buy her textbook and course guide.
The course's difficulty is artificially heightened by the midterm and final. You are forced to buy useless textbooks and answer vague, subjective multiple choice and true or false questions based almost entirely on lecture notes.
I can't say much about her since I didn't see her past week three after she stopped teaching her own lectures. Speeches are graded based on stringent guidelines that you will not see nor apply later. Midterm and final questions based on word-for-word lecture content, forcing you to memorize an obscene amount of information you will promptly forget.
The midterm and final place heavy emphasis on memorization, rather than applying learned concepts in a productive way. In fact, a entire third of the course's points reside in the arbitrarily difficult exams, meaning you could be the best speaker in town, but still fail. Bushnell does not effectively prepare students for the exams. DO NOT TAKE.
Spawn of the devil
I lucked out getting a good grade on the midterm. Was mostly multiple choice and subjective questions that were up in the air. Makes you buy a stupid textbook she wrote just to take the weekly quizzes. Additionally makes you buy her note outlines for lectures. Lectures felt useless overall and she dipped out after the 3rd week or so.
She only taught a few of the lectures before they were handed over to the recitation instructors. The lecture notes are not posted online, so be sure to make a friend in the lecture if you have to miss one. The textbook/lecture guide is required. The textbook is only used for weekly online quizzes, the lecture guide is helpful for speech rubrics.
This is a woman who thinks her class is the most important a student will ever take. It's not true at all.
She shows up for maybe 5 lectures then lets the assistants do all the rest. She wrote the required textbook used in the class which was not helpful for actually understanding the material. Midterm and final are entirely memorization of subjective points made in the lecture and not based on actual competence in public speaking.
Sucked the joy out of public speaking. My TA was great, but this class was difficult on tests and grading, but not on material. You need to study for the tests, they are not concept based. If you're looking for a class to fill a requirement, do all that you can to avoid this one.
I'll put it simply: Don't go to Lecture if you have common sense and can study Quizlet for a few hours before the exams. Do not buy Bushnell's book. Quizzes and exams (to a degree) are based on Lecture; seldom is the focus ever actually on the content, but whether or not you have justified Bushnell's existence and salary by attending lecture.
Bobette rarely even shows up to the lecture itself often leaving to other instructors. Your final grade will be mostly be based on how well you do on the midterm which follows the lecture notes, if you dont then hope you can do better on final which is an average of a C. Your public speaking experience ultimately comes down to whoever your TA is.
NOT a good class and NOT a good teacher
Please take this class at Linn Benton or PCC
I regret wasting my life going to these lectures. Stops teaching after the third lecture. Terrible public speaker, no business teaching anyone else! Don't buy her god awful textbook. The difficulty of the midterm and final is artificially inflated, no reason for it to be this bad. The recitation is fine, but your instructor makes or breaks it.
YOU WILL NOT LEARN ANYTHING!!! TESTS ARE WAY TOO HARD AND YOUR TA WILL BE UNFAIR!!
The lecture content is deceivingly simple and is not the "just memorize these few things" that she makes it out to be. I studied heavily for the midterm and barely passed and for those who studied less I could tell it was brutal. Many of the questions fall in a grey area with two equally likely answers. Memorized alot, learned little.
She is a teacher of public speaking, but not very good at it herself. She is the lecturer for the class, but you only go once a week for her; the recitation teachers are much, much better. The book is something she wrote, and honestly, not very helpful, but it is needed for the weekly quizzes (just find it online)
Overall fine professor, stops teaching the class after the first couple of weeks. Her lectures are okay, the outline for all the notes you need is provided in the course materials. The midterm/final is based off the note for the class, so be prepared to memorize a lot (writing flashcards helped!). Grades are really up to your recitation leads.
COMM111 at OSU is an AWFUL class and the program needs to be reconstructed entirely. Take it anywhere but here. Textbook is "mandatory" but is pretty much useless and the exams have the most unnecessarily difficult questions based on microdetails from lectures. You need a good GTA to grade your speeches or you are in for a rough term.
Take this class anywhere else. The lectures are useless, prof. makes you buy her own textbook and then never uses it (the whole thing is a money grab), and the midterm will contain things you've never seen before. Your grade will depend entirely on your TA and how strict they are with speeches.
You need to make it to classes to pass. I missed lecture week one due to transferring in week two, and thus missed two quizzes I could not make up. Lectures are pretty boring with her, and I had more fun with recitation leaders teaching. If you take this, listen to lectures closely, and you'll likely be fine. Most of the grade is in recitation.
She not teach.
The midterm came completely out of left field. It was multiple choice and 100% trick questions. If could give you one piece of advide it would be to TAKE ANY COMM CLASS BUT THIS ONE!
The midterm questions were completely unrelated to the lecture notes and are designed to trick you.
I enjoyed the public speaking course, but did not like Bobette. She makes you purchase two books for her class that she wrote. The textbook is NOT necessary; the workbook is. She only teaches half of the lectures and then lets the GTAs do the rest, which seems pretty lazy to me. The midterm was easy if you studied.
She doesn't actually do anything. She'll give the first three lectures and then the recitation teachers will give the remaining ones. It's your recitation teacher who grades everything and will make or break your class. However, you will get a midterm and final from her which is just memorization. She's also just a terrible public speaker.
This is an awful class, probably the worst at OSU. Bobette has a huge ego and the way she built this course is terrible. Her lectures are boring and that is when she does do stuff. Exams have a handful of trick questions and the majority of the exam is a questions with microdetails. Most of the graduate TA recitationers also have tough grading.
Found the tests hard and the questions confusing, and the giving 5-7 minute speeches every week stressful. Would recommend taking the other options such as the discourse option or debate.
Bobette is a bad public speaker. Get her course guide, and NOT her textbook. Try to find a good recitation instructor. The Scantron midterm was intentionally confusing. The only redeeming factor of this class is that if you have a 94% or higher by week 10, you end the term with an A and do not have to take the final.
Do not take her. If you do, DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, only buy the workbook! The textbook is not at all required and was a waste of money. Attendance was not required for the lecture, but if you didn't go, you missed key information that she does not post ANYWHERE. No slides, no canvas; if you missed the lecture, good luck getting that information.
