Way too many notes!!! Too much info!
Very difficult! Over 60% of class failed the midterm. Obsessed about feudalism.
Looks like Tom Selleck..mmm. Knows his stuff and encourages to be your best. Nice guy!
Enthusiastic about material and gets excitable when offering anecdotes. Some laugh out loud moments. Enjoys the gruesome and bloody details of history. Exams are very easy if you go to class, take notes and use the study guide which he provides!
Really gets excited about history! Very enthusiastic. Makes a really boring subject tolerable.
talks way to fast and doesnt slow down to explain concepts. way to many notes. over half the class failed the midterm. an awful prof, stay away.
Exams are hard, but the study guide outlines all you need to know. Very fair instructor, but if your not interested in history I can see why it'd be hard because you can't just cruise through his class.
One of the greatest teachers I've ever had. He loves the interesting tales of history, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his subject. Awesome teacher and his classes are definitely worth attending.
A fantastic teacher with a real love for history. To those who were expecting a cake walk, they're not going to get it. It is essential to go to all lectures and pay attention. He's an excellent speaker with a zeal for his subject.
Fantastic lectures. Challenging but fair exams.
he's an awesome teacher and makes the class really interesting. the only negative thing is that there are a lot of notes and he goes quickly but he will always help you out if you ask for it,
good prof, a little unclear at times during lecture. ask him questions, and go see him during office hours. hard exams, pretty fair essays though. He willingly gave me an extension on an essay. awesome prof!!
The guy knows his stuff. He is sharp as a tac.
Too tough on exams, but too easy on the big essay so it's all good. Very interesting lectures and a great guy.
Good guy, good prof. If you show up to every class and take decent notes, the exams will be a breeze. Don't waste too much time on readings, his answers are all in the notes. Gives study guide outlines that are definately worth your time to know. Always willing to clarify in class. In papers be very thorough with information, examine every aspect.
Very passionate about his material. I found his enthusiasm for the subject very helpful. He moves fast, but is always willing to slow down and take as much time as necessary if you don't understand something. Don't expect to see MC questions on his tests, but his short/long/essay questions are pretty easy if you've been paying attention.
very brilliant man
Pay attention in class, take lots of notes and you will do fine! He does go fast so if you are not good at note taking I wouldn't recomend going in his class!
Great Prof. Very knowledgable and passionate. His class is easy if you take good notes and he's very helpful with his outlines. Pay close attention to Preconditions and Causes in his lectures. I didn't use a text book once in either of the classes with him, it's all in his lectures.
great prof! loved his class! A few words of advice though: 1) buy a tape recorder, 2) Have a good discussion with him on what he expects from your footnotes!
Very nice guy, and extremely knowledgeable! Outlines for midterm and final was very helpful, but is a stiff on Grammar! Better take a good english class before this one!
very knowledgable and a fast-paced lecturer....so better hold up
interesting guy, tells great stories. insanely serious about history. if you want to good in his class just write down all he says and ask his about ukraine (he'll love you forever)
An absolutely fabulous instructor. He is passionate, knowledgeable and funny. Be sure to use a tape recorder because you will need it. Miss class at your peril. If your grammar and punctuation are weak, brush up. He is always there to help, in person or via email. One of the best instructors I have had.
While Dr. Somchynsky clearly has an indepth knowledge of history, he is still not an above average professor. His lectures are fast-paced, dull and out of the text. He requires a medium paper plus a book reading and analysis for an INTRO level course and while it may be good practice for a history major, it's not practical for everyone else.
Excelent Teacher that knows his stuff. Alot of effort is needed in order to do well in his class but its well worth it.
knows his stuff, willing to help, lectures were great and memorable, you can pass if you follow the lectures only so don't waste $ on the text, and don't miss a class, learned a lot in a short amount of time (some overload), be ready for work if you take this one
i can't say enough good things about him. his passion for the subject matter is contagious. his lectures are enthralling, its the only class that went by too fast. but don't expect an easy ride. even at intro level you need to read several books just for one essay, and take tons of notes if you want to do well on exams.
The lectures were actually interesting. He gives outlines for the exams and everything is in your notes. I got an A a didn't open the book. The paper requires work, but I thought he was an easy marker.
I didnt really enjoy his class. More times then not he would put you to sleep. His monatone voice and long sentances just bores the hell out of you. When you ask him for advice he gives the quickest thing that comes to mind and usually doesnt help at all. Not the best teacher I have ever had to tell the truth, one of the worst.
Bodhan was really great. I'm not good at the subject anyways which is why I didn't do so well but as a teacher he was very interesting and was extremely knowledgable on the subject matter being taught. His exams were tough though. My friends all remember the same thing about him... the bottle of orange juice :)
very fast paced lectures. Need to take alot of in depth notes in class but does not really rely on the textbook.
Attend his class and dont even think of coming in late as well. As long as you are attending and pay at least 70% attention, you will do fine. (By fine I mean a C) He is a great guy and he makes history a lot less boring! Easy marker as well.
Make sure you attend class and pay attention. Don't rely too much on textbook. Term paper took some time, but he marks really easy(Tip: take a look at his papers on hold in library to see how he likes the essays done). Midterm and final were straight forward, but in order to do well you need to have a strong understanding of the material.
Always drinking orange juice. Good teacher, adds in funny little opinions every now and then to keep you entertained. Like his impression of inbreds coming to the throne. Very thorough knowlege, answers questions effectively. Lots of note taking though, its rough.
He goes over lots of information. You will need to take tons of notes- you won't want to miss a class for fear of falling behind. He is incredibly knowledgable and I always looks forward to his class. It is amazing how fluid he is in presenting the information and he is never, ever boring! He's one of the best!
Awesome teacher with a contagious enthusiasm for history. Take good notes and don't miss class! The study guide he provides is amazing! The exams aren't super hard as long as you thouroughly understand all the points on the guide. But if you don't you're screwed because there's no multiple choice. Definitely one of the best teachers I've ever had.
I like the way he teaches, he has a relaxed style, and pretty much tells you useful info and he ISN'T boring. So i encourage everyone to study history with him. Even for his exams everything i straight forward. Just review everything and you'll ace his exams.
He is by far the most intelligent man i have ever met in my life. His passion for the subjects he teaches is outstanding! I encourage anyone who has an inkling for history to take this class it totally rocked my world!
Don't buy the History 110 textbook! You don't need it. Just take very, very good notes during class. You can't miss a single one! His exams are all written and highlight the main points he says down during class. (he likes lists, eg point 1, point 2, point 3 - memorize them for the exam and details for each.) He's great :)
Awesome prof, took 111 and 112 with him. Don't buy the textbook but go to every class and take good notes..thats all he tests on.111 is a bit dry at times due to the material, 112 was great. Id recommend him if you have any interest at all in history.
He is a very good instructor it's a very heavy course and he expects a lot of reading to be done in preparation for the research paper His exams are pretty tough but very fair he is a tad on the boring side at times and can really put u 2 sleep at 8 am but he can be interesting too He is willing 2 help and tells u exactly what u need 2 know 4 exams
He is an amazing teacher who does not hop around randomly, He did the topics on the countries history, not Time Periods making it awesome for note taking. He does not spell names on the board unless you ask. and attend every class because the textbook really doe not cut it, I never even used mine (waste of money actually) and he is really funny!!
He was really fun because he made jokes in his lecture relating the topics to current events. His midterm is easy if you attend class and review your notes a little prior to the test. He only assigns one research paper for the entire semester. He is easily approachable outside of class for help on your research paper.
Don't bother getting the txtbook for 110, just attend class. He doesn't use Blackboard, and his tests are all from his notes, which differ from the book, so make friends with ppl in class the first day in case you have to miss class ever. Great prof tho, very entertaining. He tells you what to study for exams, but it's still a lot of info.
well planned lessons, he will give you a study guide at the beginning of the semester and stick to it 100%. His midterms and finals are easy as long as you attend class. Hes also very funny and obviously knows his stuff.
A great history professor, he's engaging and interesting to listen to. He says a lot in every class, so don't miss any and if you don't write/type fast you might want to purchase a recorder. He gives study guides for the midterm and final that are detailed and really helpful and his marking for papers and exams is very fair. Makes Star Wars jokes.
Most intimidating man ever. Extremely intelligent and knows his stuff. Talks A LOT! Make sure you are a good note taker if you decide to take one of his classes, and you MUST study very hard but he gives you and outline which is helpful. Do NOT procrastinate on the research paper.
Very knowledgable about course content. Don't really need to buy the textbook, he doesn't really refer to it at all. Expects a lot from the papers but it isn't too hard to get a good mark. Outline for exams is extremely helpful. Approachable personality to get extra help, he even gave the class his home phone #. One of my favourite profs ever.
Great prof! Makes classes interesting! Says a lot during class so be sure to be a good note taker as it is completely different from what is in the text. The midterm and final are easy as long as you attend class and follow the study guide he gives you. He is a very fair marker as well
Fair marker, clear on what he expects. Lectures are easy to understand but require good note taking. Textbook is preparatory reading, not referenced during lectures. Over all a pretty solid Prof.
Interesting lectures and easy to understand. Cracks a few jokes sometimes. No powerpoints so attendance is MANDATORY. Very helpful & a fair marker. I highly recommend him. :)
This guy knows his stuff. It's basically, he talks and you write. He presents the material in a logical orderly manner. He expects a lot and challenges you but it is refreshing and you end up learning a lot. One of my most enjoyed classes - He's a hard marker, probably my only complaint.
While this class is difficult it has no reflection on Mr. Somchynsky, he knows what he is talking about is a great prof. While class isn't mandatory if you do not attend you will not pass the class. Pay attention and you will have no problem doing well. Highly recommended.
he is a great teacher, but you HAVE to attend class
All oral lecture with no blackboard notes. Tests on his lectures only-don't waste you're money on the textbook...seriously. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. DON'T EVEN MISS ONE CLASS UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. He's truly a brilliant man and is very approachable. He made me fall in love with history :) PS The study guide he gives you is PURE GOLD!!
Great teacher. Loud, clear speaker, which is good cause he has no slides, goes quick but easy enough to follow if you're paying attention. Which you will be cause he is interesting, uses the board and maps. Essays are tough, so are exams being all short and long answers but if you take good notes in class you can do good. text book isn't used atall
Great Prof! Very funny, and knowledgeable. He will do so much to help you understand what he's talking about. All his tests are easy, only if you take good notes. Don't waste money on the textbook because he never uses it! He marks fairly, and is willing to help you improve. Overall, he's an awesome professor. I recommend everyone to take him!
doesnt post notes on line. lectures are terrible. never been so disinterested in a class. nice enough guy but not a 4.4. thanks for leading me astray guys. at best hes a 2.5
Nice guy, however his teaching style lacks substance - lectures consist of him talking and no use of the board. There is no organization to the notes. Study guide is helpful. You have to attend class. Only 5 people got above 80 on the midterm, the rest below 60. ( he also told us this) his rating is definitely misleading. Very hard marker.
Loved him! He was a great teacher/fair marker.Lectures are lectures. Traditional and straight up. I prefer this style for a some courses and a history survey course is def one of them where it works best. His jokes aren't funny, but laugh anyway. Marks may reflect? (speculation). Cynical AF tho: final exam on sat; midterm day after reading week
GPA killer - run!!!!!! lectures are boring and all over the map. He never posts notes. The only useful thing he gave us was a study guide. Also exams are ridiculously hard (class average on the hist 112 midterm was 53%)
NOTES NOTES NOTES! Provides a study guide to help you understand what topics will be important in lectures. Tests on lectures only, no text. Very friendly, funny, helpful. Go to class and take notes and you'll do great! I got an A+ and I'm not even that smart a guy...
Bohdan is a great teacher, you can really see his passion for history come through in his lectures. Don't buy the textbook, his tests are 100% from his lectures. This means you cannot skip class, ever. However, if you have a good reason for missing class(like I did), he will help you out and send you his notes. His tests are difficult, so be ready.
Best history prof I've ever had, his lectures are very clear and super easy to follow. His tests are reasonably easy as long as you study and he's a fair marker when it comes to papers. He doesn't expect too much. Don't bother buying the textbook but make sure you show up to class.
GO TO CLASS-Testing done only off lectures. Very intelligent specific marker. Massive amount of information-HIGHLY SUGGEST REGULAR REVIEW, it would've been easy to get a high mark in the class, take the time for memorization. Highlighters are a must have-PAY ATTENTION TO KEY (NUMBERED) POINTS. Watch out for his Research paper - DO NOT BRUSH IT OFF.
He was great! Get ready to do a lot of research for his 10-Page report he makes you do. But, if you can pick something interesting then you'll make it. He's witty and interesting, but sometimes needs to be reminded to back track over something important. I would get a recorder for class because every second word he says is valuable.
Really good course material. Exams are hard to study for because there is a lot of information you need to memorize. Exam questions have to be answered thoroughly. He funny and 100% willing to help you if you ask for it!
YOU MUST GO TO CLASS. Do not even consider skipping. Buy a tape recorder because it is information over-load. He's nice, funny, and has an odd sense of humour. I definitely suggest taking CLAS 110 previous to this one, it works out nicely!
I feel that some of the lower ratings given are based on the difficulty students had achieving easy As because of the unexpected information load thrown on them by Somchynsky. If you consider this to be a valid perspective and would like to drift through your scholastic years like a bottom feeder laps up excrement in then fish tank, then don't go.
The good reviews on here are pretty misleading. Tests off his lectures, all verbal, no slides or use of the board. No notes online. Awful marker. No multiple choice on tests. Final was literally 8 short answer questions that were randomly pulled from his random notes. Doesn't answer your questions, instead asks one in return. Avoid at all costs.
This is not an easy A. But if you study, show up to class and listen to Somchynsky (who gives great feedbacks on essays and a wonderful study guide for each exam!) you will not only do well but learn more than you thought was possible in a semester. He's an odd duck, but a brilliant professor and an excellent teacher. Just be prepared to work!
Fav prof! He has an odd sense of humour but I found it hilarious. His passion for history made the class that much better. Tons of information in his lectures, which you will have to attend because of his complete distrust of technology. Don't buy the textbook unless you plan on doing background reading.
So great! exams are really easy if you go to class regularly and pay attention. Make sure you take detailed notes, he writes the most important stuff on the board. Textbook is handy for filler information, but if you're a strong note taker you wont need it.
The class I have him with is easily one of my favourites simply because he is really funny and easy to listen to. His exams are based on the lectures, so if you show up to class and take notes or at least record the lectures and listen to them later, you'll easily pass. No need to buy the main textbook, but get a book to help with Chicago style.
Just show up and take notes of everything he says. His lectures are really interesting & he'll crack a joke or two. 1 midterm, 1 assignment, 1 paper, 1 final. That's it! You must study your notes from the lecture, and know the material WELL. I really enjoyed this class! But don't buy the textbook it's for background reading.
If you are dependant on technology to think for you, don't take his classes. He talks, you take notes and his exams are directly from the notes. I respect him for that cause putting notes online invites people to not go to class. Bohdan was kind enough to give me an extension on an assignment though I didn't ask for one. He's a great teacher.
He does oral lectures and scribbles a couple of words on the board. He does not post any lectures on BB so you must attend class to pass. Be aware of the 10 page paper. The exam is based exactly on his lectures. He uses the textbook to back up his material, but it is not necessary. Knows his stuff and lectures are interesting.
Probably one of the best professors I've had thusfar. Incredibly engrossing lectures and very entertaining style of teaching.
Tests are 100% based off of his lectures and he doesn't upload notes so you must attend. Is an extremely hard marker and wants things to be described in a certain way. Took this in third year as an elective and it was my worst mark. I knew the topic and didn't miss a single class, just didn't describe 'the right way' in exams apparently.
Bohdan was by far my favorite professor at MacEwan when I first enrolled for Winter Semester 2016. He was incredibly passionate and was very dedicated to teaching students about history. Attendance is mandatory if you want to pass his class and the textbook is not needed what so ever. He has an odd sense of humor that really appeals to his students
Loved this class was an easy A. gives clear study guide questions for midterm and final. tests straight from lectures so make sure you write good notes basically everything he says esp. point form notes. marked essay easy too as long as you followed his outline criteria. just go to class write notes. he also tells jokes but listen carefully forthem
He doesn't give any notes or use the textbook, the test is based on his lectures. You need to be a fast note taker, but he explains everything clearly and makes the content seem like he is telling stories. You need to put in a bit of work, but it is a great course and he teaches it very well.
He is an amazing prof. You NEED to go to class, all tests are based ONLY off the lectures. He talks a bit fast and tells the course like it's a story. I recommend recording his lectures and taking the time to listen to them after and add to your notes. He has an enjoyable humour. You definitely won't pass if you don't go to class.
Bohdan is an incredible professor, but he is a hard marker and he expects you to take the class seriously. He has top-notch lectures, which is good, because thats what the test is 100% based on. He gives the best study guide you'll ever be given, and he is very helpful outside of class. Take advantage of everything he gives you, and you'll excell
Amazing lectures, he's definitely a fun prof but this class is NOT easy. Get ready to read and work for your grade. If you go to lectures, put some work in this should be doable. Highly recommended, worth the effort. Lots of writing, be specific - short answer should really be long answer(write a lot on your exams!). He likes specific answers.
if you can't make a class make sure you get lecture notes from a friend cause you will 100% need them, he rarely uses blackboard. if you study for his tests you'll do fine. He was very accommodating when I needed to switch dates for a midterm. really hard grader, be sure you have no grammatical or syntactical errors in research papers.
Awesome guy and great lectures
Amazing prof, my favourite class by far. Lectures are all oral based, he does not post on blackboard so it is imperative you attend every single day and take lots of notes. Tips: pay attention to the numbered lists he jots down on the board, those are almost always exam questions, and don't buy the textbook you'll never need it.
The Traditional format of Somchynsky's which is lecture only takes some getting use to. You have to show up and take notes from what he says so you need to filter out the nonessential stuff. Never leave your papers or readings to the last minute that is a straight ticket to failure. I liked his style so much I took both HIST 101 and 102 with him!
Fantastic prof! He has a fairly "old school" approach to teaching the material, for example he does not post any notes on BlackBoard. However he tests directly from his lectures so if you take good notes and show up to class you will be golden. The papers are long but not particularly difficult. I have had him twice now and would choose him again.
Bohdan is awesome. I love the old school lecture format, and he keeps them as interesting as possible. If he writes a number on the whiteboard like 1/, that means its going to be on the exams. I found his marking relaxed. I'm not an amazing student but I did well with Bohdans class simply by showing up and being engaged. Start your paper early!
Very good lecture format, and he tells stories and funny anecdotes which really help you get the sense of the history (including personal accounts). You need to show up to class, as he doesn't post things online. Probably my favorite teacher at Macewan: the pacing of the lectures makes them very engaging, and time just flies by.
Amazing prof. He is a fair marker and his lectures are amazing. Would definitely recommend.
You need to go to class because every class is a lecture- which I personally loved since I'm not a fan of having to participate in discussion. Write down everything he says during the lectures and use the study guides that he gives you. He makes it very easy to do well as long as you show up to class and put in the work.
Lectures are pretty entertaining but very boring. Low class assignment demand. Gives you a very broad study guide for exams which is nice. Worst marker I've ever had. Expects you to answer questions like you were a history major otherwise you'll get half marks on everything. Very frustrating to know content well and not get the appropriate marks.
Somchynsky's class was amazing. His style of lecturing was so refreshing. He doesn't post his notes on Blackboard, so showing up is a must. I would definitely recommend taking a class with him.
Mr. Somchynsky is a character. His class is worth taking even if its just to meet a cool dude. His lectures are top-notch, good flow, good content, and he makes it exciting to learn from him. His enthusiasm for teaching is evident. The tests are on his lectures. If this site is your make-or-break to take his class, no regrets here!
Bohdan is the best HIST prof out there. His lectures are entertaining but mandatory, his grading is clear, his paper topics are easy to write on, and his exams are straightforward. Great prof and I would recommend him to anyone!
IF Dr. Somchynsky taught more classes i would have taken all of them! hands down the best prof. in the history department not like predator womanizer Faulkner or SJW Pollock. He made history of Science (a somewhat boring topic) into a fun and engaging class (hands down my fav.) Dr. S you're the best!
Worst prof I've had so far. His lectures are intensely boring and hard to pay attention to, and his expectations for assignments are more like what you would expect for a 400 level class, rather than what he was actually teaching, which was HIST101. Don't take his class.
Somchynsky was my favourite professor this term! I love history and I learned a lot from him, and his main assignment was a great challenge that I loved doing. His teaching method is quite orthodox but is tremendously effective. He cancels class more than other professors, so the full material is not always covered. I also found him pretty funny.
Have to go to class, lecture based. Way too tough a marker, do not take for easy A. Made appointments for x help, he cancelled them every time day of but responds to e-mails. Study whats on his study guide for exams and its easy, his papers are what he marks hard on. His classes can be extremely boring, especially in morning.
He's definitely a fun prof but this class is NOT easy. He talks VERY fast, so you need to jot notes quickly (*the ones on the board). He gives great, story-like lectures! I recommend recording them for missed information. He doesn't put any notes on blackboard or use the textbook. You NEED to go to class, all tests are based ONLY off the lectures.
Although he was a nice and funny prof, his lectures were so dry! No powerpoints or word documents used to lecture, he just talked all class which made it hard to follow along. didnt use bb for notes so don't skip class. tough grader and exam was way too specific compared to his study guide. give him a pass if you need this class.
I really enjoyed his class. He is a great guy and passionate about history. However, he is a very heavy lecturer and if you miss one class, you'll be very behind. There are no notes on Blackboard. If you plan on skipping his class, do not take it. Attendance is mandatory if you want to pass his classes.
Worst class I've ever taken at MacEwan. Didn't know what my mark was going into final until 4 days before. He missed so many days we barely covered half the course concepts and then the questions on the final were hardly talked about in class. If you like going to every class and exams with no multiple choice, then this the class for you lmao
Easily my favourite prof. He gives amazing lectures and goes into detail on subjects, with funny comments to keep you focused if you're starting to zone out. He's an old-school prof who uses a slide projector and lectures in a fairly traditional way, and he's often ill so there will be classes canceled. The final paper is tricky but worth it.
