She's a hard professor. You have to keep up with the work. Her exams are challegning but fair. She's really helpful and will do anything to get her students get better grades.

awesome teacher, having failed orgo once before dr dixon is by far one of the best teachers i have had at md. she will go out of her way and do anything to help students learn. actually made a horrendous class bearable

She's excellent. Her class is not easy, but she is very fair. First-rate lectures. You will not be sleeping through her classes. This is good because that would be the kiss of death in this class. DO NOT fall behind. But if you go to class, keep up with the lectures, and DO LOTS of PROBLEMS, you're golden. Try to stay ahead of lectures.

She was tough, but fair and VERY helpful. The way she teaches helps you understand the material, and not just memorize it.

Very helpful and clear. Sometimes goes off into organic, which is not necessary. One of the most fun professors that I have had.

Made class enjoyable

one of my favorite teachers. she does a WONDERFUL JOB at teaching. shes around for help almost ALL the time. and she doesnt care if you didnt spent much time at home, she still welcomes students in her office. she makes funny demonstrations sometimes which seriously makes the class not only enjoyable but also helpful for learning the material.

Gosh, She is one of my favorite teacher. I mean her class was funn. She is like the perfect package people search for in a prof. She is a great teacher with a sense of humor, her exams are not impossible, her curves can bring up a letter grade, she is always available for office hours. I very strongly recommend this prof.

Out of all the science classes that I have taken at MD, she is definately the best professor I have ever had. Her lectures were clear, and although the tests were hard, they were more then fair. She never hesistates to help students who want to learn. I hated my science major so much i swtiched majors, so for me to enjoy orgo, she had to be good...

Best teacher I've had so far. Dixon makes everything clear and easy to understand. Definitely take her. Test are easy as long as you go to lecture and pay attention. I don't know about her curve because I didn't need it. Very energetic too.

She is definately very helpful, makes learning chemistry somewhat interesting and is very energetic. Tests are based on problems done in lecture.

I actually am surprised she has negative ratings. Very nice, willing to help any student who needs help, even outside of chemistry. Tests straight forward, very energetic and light hearted. Not serious like you'd expect from a CHEM teacher. Uses students for demostrations instead of chemicals. My best teacher so far at UMD!

She is extremely helpful and goofy. Encourages questions and wants to help students learn. Her tests are pretty fair and she teaches everything thoroughly. Holds tons of optional review sessions. The only reason that easiness is not a 5 is because the subject is Chemistry. She is obsessed with organic chemistry though. If you take chem, get her.

I thought Dr. Dixon was a great teacher and she went out her way to help students with lots of out-of-class review sessions. She is especially good if you are planning on taking orgo b/c she really concentrates on getting her students ready for that. This is the first chem teacher that Ive actually liked!

Dixon moves a little quickly sometimes, and her exams are pretty difficult, but she is good at explaining things and is very approachable for questions. She is a pretty good prof.

Had her for Chem131, got an A ...HOWEVER, for Chem231, i realize why there are many people who hate her: difficult tests, requires too many things other orgo professors leave out, paces through material til last second of class, must devote HOURS outside of class, very busy woman, extreme organic nut, lower curve than others, mandatory attendance

She's a great professor who will really help you out if you put in the effort and go to her. However, she's one of harder professors in the Chem department so be ready to work!

Dixon is a great teacher. def take chemistry with her. she really cares about teaching and about her students. she will go above and beyond to help you understand. the material is hard but if you go to class and do the work you will do fine. tests seem impossible but there is a huge curve at the end.

Expect to work in this class. Devote at least 2 hrs for every hour spent in class. Go to review sessions n attend all lectures. Her tests are hell and cumulative. She is very helpful if you come to help. She does give xtra credit. Very easy to get behind n fail if u rnt on the ball

Dixon is an amazing prof. If you are taking the class for the purpose of simply learning, I would suggest that you take Dixon because she will teach you the most. However her tests are nearly impossible so if you are looking to just get through orgo with a decent grade and don't really care about the knowledge you come away with, take another prof.

She is a really good teacher, really likes being asked questions. Really helpful if you come in for office hours or email her.

If she mentions it in class its fair game (and she will ask it)! super entertaining and down to earth lectures and has a bizarre ability to turn a 255 person lecture into a small class-room type environment encouraging student interaction. your grade will definitely reflect your level of effort. SLACKERS BEWARE!

If you want to learn and master organic chemistry for mcats/medical school, take Dixon! She teaches material that other professors don't cover (i.e. IR, fisher projections, etc) and makes her students memorize more material, but it is worth it. She has office hours everyday and holds a weekly review session. Take her if you can!

Granted, she is the hardest organic chemistry professor. BUT, she is the most clear and helpful professor. She holds review sessions every week, which I highly recommend attending because they are very helpful. Do LOTS of practice problems, and you should do fine on her exams!

Had her for gen chem and got an A. However, there are things she says in lecture that just go over my head, and I'm finding myself struggling in orgo. Nevertheless, I find her to be very helpful if you attend office hours, and she is generally a nice lady.

Dr. Dixon is an amazinggggg professor. She does so much for her students. Yes, her exams are extremely difficult but you will not regret taking her class if you want to learn and not just pass with a letter grade. I would suggest recording her lectures, listening to them & re-writing your notes. Do all the wrkshts she gives & old practice exams.

Best class I've taken so far in UMD! Lectures were always lively and never boring! Her review sessions and office hours are very helpful especially if you go with specific questions. Though not everybody does well on her exams, her curves are amazing!

She gives quizzes every two weeks, the occasional clicker questions, three "midterm" exams, and one final exam. If you do the optional mastering chemistry you can earn extra credit. She also gives an extra credit question every week that you work on out of class and e-mail her the answer before midnight. Big curve yay.

Dr. Dixon is extremely helpful and knows the material really well. She's clear in what she teaches but skips some material that she thinks you should already know anyway. The course is difficult and based on orgo, definitely go to office hours! Don't miss clicker quizes and complete the Mastering Chemistry for extra credit!

The class was pretty challenging for me and I had previously taken AP Chem and got a 4 on the AP Exam. I do not recommend Dixon if you have not taken AP Chem. Also she puts in too much orgo which is unnecessary. She's hot though.

Class isn't mandatory, but all of the stuff on the test will be taught in class and the textbook goes nowhere near as detailed orgo chem as what she teaches. You need to study for sure to get a good grade, and reading the text helps a lot. I took AP Chem, got a 4 on the test so it wash't too bad. Dixon is super helpful and really nice in office hrs

First thing you should know, she is hard. Students they got B's in Dixon's class would easy get A+'s in any other professors. With that, be prepared to work hard, seriously. I strongly recommend Dixon if you have to take orgo II, it will be much easier.

She is an amazing professor or organic chemistry! You learn so much in her class and she knows how to peak your interest in lecture. She always keeps you on your toes and although she seems intimidating in lecture she is a pleasure in her office hours (which she offers a lot of). Her tests are really hard but she always curves to a B-.

Dr. Dixon is really one of the best professors at Maryland. Her exams are insane, but she gives you more than enough assistance in preparing for them. The majority of people taking organic chem are pre-med, and Dixon knows this. She wants you to be ready for the MCAT. If you can do well in Dixon's class, you will do well on the MCAT.

Dr. Dixon is awesome. Her lectures are always lively and interesting (no danger of falling asleep). Her tests can be challenging, but if you study a little bit everyday and then a lot in the week or so prior to each test, you'll do fine. She has a huge curve (75% = A), so you just need to do above the average (not that hard, pretty low averages).

Best teacher I have had in college. Don't get me wrong, the class is difficult and the subject is hard but Dr. Dixon is so approachable and genuinely wants you to learn the material. She had like 20 hours of planned office hour every week, not including appointments, so there was literally no excuse not to go in for help. Amazing teacher.

If you want to get an A in chem, this is not the class for you. Her tests are extremely hard. Even if you took AP chem in high school, it is difficult to get an A. Dr. Dixon is a great gen chem teacher. As any incoming freshman (or new to college chem student) I was nervous for the course. I am a biochem major and love chemistry and Dixon enabled me to learn a lot and truly understand the material. Her exam averages are low, but there is a nice curve and as long as you pay attention you can easily get an A.

The grades are as follows: 3 exams, 1 cumulative final, and 6 homework assignments. Go to her office hours as much as you can, they WILL save you! Her tests are difficult but definitely doable if you put the time into the class. Use her to help you for the homework, and get the book "Organic Chemistry as A 2nd Language" by Steven Klein.

PROFESSOR DIXON IS THE BEST. Her lectures are phenomenal and very clear. In high school, my AP teacher told me to drop because she thought I'd never be able to do chem and I did. Professor Dixon proved her wrong and I put a lot of effort into getting the A I got. If it weren't for this professor, I probably would have gotten a B. LOVE HER.

Dr. Dixon really cares about her students, evidenced by the fact that her research centers on improving ways to teach chem. Take advantage of her daily office hours, ask her for test taking techniques BEFORE the first exam, and read Klein. Her exams are fair and doable if you study hard and are prepared, but you NEED to work quickly to do well!

Prof. Dixon is the hardest chem teacher at UMD; however she is very nice and approachable and will help you IF you go to her office hours. She's really good at remembering you and figuring out what your kinks are. She is MOST DEFINITELY NOT an easy A! Still love her and all that she did to help me get through her class.

I haven't taken a chem class since 10th grade, but she was able to make chemistry so understandable (considering I struggle with chemistry). She offers a lot of extra credit and the curve is around 5-10% BIGGEST TIP!!! Look at the past 2 exams for every exam you take, she pretty much reuses 90% of them and changes the chemicals/numbers

where to begin, I had her when I was a freshman and I am now a Junior who still goes to her for help. Gen Chem was a not a favorite class by any means, and I did OK. But I love Dr. Dixon, she is the bomb and she loves her students. It is either a hit or miss it seems with students, GO TO OFFICE HOURS ALL THE TIME.

Dr. Dixon is an amazing teacher all around. She helps students out when she can with office hours, extra credit, etc. That being said, organic chemistry has its reputation for a reason. You have to really work hard in her class to get good grades. If you're taking this for an "easy A" just don't.

Prof. Dixon is the best orgo chem professor at UMD and told us we didn't even need to read the textbook to pass the class. Her office hours are always open and she is easily approachable. Her exams and Hw are freakishly hard, but you will learn alot. If you have a desire to do well, she will change the way your brain learns the material.

She's a fabulous professor! Had organic I with her last semester and I still come to her. Exams are hard and hw is time consuming, but you'll be so prepared in organic II. Her open office hours are really helpful too. The only downside is the competitiveness as her class attracts the pre-med freaks who screw up the curve.

Dixon is a good proffessor who definitely knows her material. Lecture can be very overwhelming so I recommend the green klein book to supplement your studies which really goes hand in hand with her lectures. Her exams are hard, but fair. Everything on the exams, you will be prepared for from lecture notes, discussion questions, and the homeworks

This is the toughest class you may ever take, but in the end it's worth it. Dr. Dixon has an open door policy, meaning she's always available for office hours. Amazing lecturer! Everyone says orgo is their hardest class, but honestly it was my favorite subject and class this semester. If you go to all her lectures and do all the homework assignments it's not hard to get an A in the class.

Loved Dixon, but I wont lie its a hard class. Orgo isnt supposed to be easy! Its important to go to lecture. shes always in her office and loves to help students understand the concepts. Organic chemistry is hard and harder with Dixon but you'll learn more with her than any other UMD prof and it'll help in CHEM241. To get an A you have to invest time!! GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! If you go to office hours everyday and work on the material and homeworks you're basically guaranteed to get 100% on the homeworks and above average on exams.

A decent choice if you plan on taking Organic 2. Homeworks are hard and might force you to go to office hours but if you understand the homework, the exams aren't bad. Dr. Dixon has great office hours due to her class' difficulty but she is approachable and wants you to learn. Felt like she taught more material than other professors as well.

Bonnie Dixon will be the best professor you'll ever meet if you go to office hours. Simply going to lecture will leave you confused with an average grade, if not failing. Her office hours create an environment where you can easily learn the material, ask questions, meet people, build a relationship with her, and get an A in organic chemistry.

Organic chemistry is known for being one of the most difficult classes you can take, you will have to WORK for your grade but taking Dr. Dixon is the best choice if you are pre-health or plan on taking orgo 2. For anyone considering taking her, this is the only comment you need to reed. I could not find a better rating other than 5/5 and 5/5 for difficulty. She is definitely a good lecturer, a good professor and she understands and teaches the contents well. Her Homeworks are extremely hard, probably like a 10/5 but those get you prepared for the exam.

She is very very hard but cares a lot about her students and truly wants you to learn. Gives homework which prepares you for the exam. Go to her office hours and make an effort, you would really learn a lot.

Taking her online Organic Chem course during COVID. I'm grateful to have access to her recorded lectures because she does move rather quickly. That being said, she is one of the most organized, thorough, and knowledgeable professors I've ever had. She covers every inch of information and ties concepts together perfectly. Would absolutely recommend.

I am taking orgo online currently, and the first exams came back. They were TOUGH, even with online exams the averages were in the 60s. I have a friend in ORGO2 and his exam #1 average was 79%. But no, Dr Dixon made these exams so hard that even with online and open note exams, they are still in the 60s. Dr Dixon, please curve this class :) We need

Dr. Dixon teaches a very difficult class, but she provides every student with the resources they need to succeed. She won't hold you're hand and guide you, but she'll treat you with respect and answer any question patiently and thoroughly. She's also pretty funny, but her tests and homework are VERY difficult (unnecessarily so).

It isn't her fault that orgo is SO HARD. She is caring and wants to answer every question, and she is very nice about it. Definitely gets a 5 for vibe check. But, the homework every week is so unnecessarily hard. I would spend 6 hours on it and get 6/12. Lecture moves VERY fast so you should watch the recordings instead of live so you can pause!

Orgo is a hard class. Period. Dr. Dixon also goes very fast and knows her stuff so sometimes it can be hard to keep up. However, with everything being online she had exams open note and office hours every single day except for Saturday (Yes she even had them Sunday night). If you put in the work it won't be as bad and get extra help!!

I agree with what other students have said that it is not Dr. Dixon's fault orgo is so hard. Also understand that this class is different for everyone, some people just can't grasp the concepts as well as others. I think that Dixon has done a great job teaching this semester. Dr. Dixon is THE BEST PROFESSOR. She is SUPER SMART. She lectures very well. Her HWs are HARD!! But they prepare you for exams. ATTEND OFFICE HRS. Overall,she is a solid choice. TAKE HER if you will take the MCAT at some point. You will leave this class a chemist with Dr. Dixon. TAKE HER!!!

Orgo is a horrible class, there's no sugar coating that. That being said, Dr. Dixon's lectures were thorough and she was willing to help outside of class. She's very nice and very smart, and the course being horribly difficult isn't her fault. Her exams are brutal, as are some of the homework quizzes. I hated orgo, but not because of Dixon.

Dixon understands most students struggle in orgo. Tries to be straightforward as possible with the lecture material. Take her homework and practice problems seriously. They will help you learn the lecture material a lot, which helps prepare you for the exams. A considerate and caring person as a whole, and I wish I could take orgo 2 with her.

Orgo I is in itself a very hard class, especially being online and asynchronous. Lectures are thorough and Dr. Dixon is very open and approachable. Definitely go to all TA sessions at least once. My actual TA was terrible but I went to two others discussions and it helped a lot. Homework is hard, so ask questions. They will get you ready for exams.

I loved taking CHEM231 with Dixon. She explains complex concepts very well and answers questions clearly. While her exams and homework assignments are quite difficult, the information is all in the lectures and she is always available to answer questions (office hours everyday and she responds to emails).

Great instructor, can relate almost everything in class to actual clinical practice in health sciences. Difficult material and class, but curves heavy. Expect to work hard and you'll be okay

Orgo is hard no matter what but Dixon does an amazing job teaching it and making it applicable. She has so many office hours, practice problems (w answers), extra asynch videos, and will answer any question you have you just have to speak up. She really wants to help you pass but you have to put in the effort and spend time on the material everyday

Dr. Dixon does so much work for her students to make sure they understand the material, goes above and beyond. She has async videos, so many office hours, and held problem sessions at night. Orgo is tough, period. But if you're willing to put in the work, she will definitely do as much possible to make sure you succeed. Also go to GSS!!

This is the hardest class I have ever taken and made me switch majors. Dixon dedicated a lot of time for review sessions and posting helpful videos. Orgo is hard no matter what but Dixon generally cares for her students.

She's a good teacher and very resourceful. She does care about the students and has office hours and study sessions at night (at least for virtual). Although, I took more time studying for this class than my other classes combined. But I found it worthwhile because she definitely prepares you for future classes (orgo 2).

Many people have been saying she's a bad professor for orgo 1, but it's just butthurt freshmen who don't want to put in the work. Dr. Dixon is a good professor and is tough, but orgo 1 is going to be hard regardless. She prepares you for the exams so if you don't do your work. you won't do well. Don't shy away from her bc of the new reviews here!

Materials are pretty hard to understand overall, and exams are so confusing. She does provide many opportunities to help you catch up outside of lecture. Discussions are also great, just don't sign up for ones that starts at 8. Lastly, have a study group; you be in need of emotional supportslot's of them. Could've been a 3, but 4 cuz of Xtra creds

BEST BEST professor. As long as you put in effort, she will try to help you as much as possible but if you clearly slack, she wont bother with you. Regardless, its not an easy class, and the way she wants us to be chemists doesnt make it easier.; but with no doubt, coming out of her class, you will be a chemist cz she will make sure of it.

I LOVVVE her. I'll admit, the class was hard, but it was worth it. After taking orgo 1 with her, I have been doing the bare minimum in the rest of my chem classes and flying by cz of how well she prepared me. But as long as you have the time and discipline to push through in her class, I highly recommend taking her.

I took this over the pandemic. The class was very hard and the exams were rough, but she was an amazing lecturer and cared so much about her students. She always held office hours and really wanted students to come and ask her questions. She is hands down one of my favorite professors here. The class is def hard but she made it bearable.

Bonnie Dixon's CHEM231 is a challenging class, but with effort, her teaching can be quite helpful. The exams are tough, but she provides ample opportunities for support. Using unstuck AI and forming study groups can make a big difference.

Dixon is definitely polarizing. She is an experienced professor and is highly knowledgable (she's also quite witty, which makes her lectures fun). However, she's pretty harsh and can make you feel inadequate as a student and frankly, as a person. If you have thick skin and come into the class prepared to work hard, you will learn a ton.
