very boring... the first week there the whole class was full with lots of students trying to get into the class, now only 1/3 of the class remains.. and for a 100 level class, it is HARD!!
boring, confusing, and pointless
UGH... boring boring boring... very biased viewpoint... can't stand that voice
Not too hard of a class, very organized. I followed her lectures, even if they were tedious at times. Overall, recommended.
I thought she was great. Very knowledgable and passionate about what she was teaching.
I enjoyed this class a lot. The reading was difficult, but not unbearable. The materials were interesting. She was definitely opinionated, but encouraged alternate points of view to be expressed. Great class, I reccomend it.
Excellent class. Encourages opposing viewpoints. She is ideologically honest. She has crafty ways of getting you to come to every class, such as mandatory in-class writings. Great professor.

She is definitely my favorite professor. Does an excellent job of explaining very complex concepts and expanding on the readings. Really well prepared classes. I know multiple people with very different opinions than the instructor's, and they have done well in her courses; she is very fair.
Outstanding professor. One of the department's best.
DO NOT TAKE!!! By far the worst professor I have ever had. She is very biased and loves to hear her own voice. If your viewpoints conflict with hers you should drop the class. Our final was multiple choice and each questoin could have up to three right answers. If you did not get all it was wrong
No Comments
She's a biased feminist who had many blatantly dumb viewpoints in my class, and students often challenged her on it and proved her wrong. Her class isn't very hard but I hated putting up with her, even two days a week.
Worst prof., worst class. You can't conduct a classs of 300 people like a class of 30. Huge waste of time. Almost destroyed my interest in phil.
Total hypocrite, always encouraged students to respect opposing points of view, but if you disagreed with her she treated you like you were the stupidest person on the planet. If you aren't a ultra liberal, feminist, you will NOT enjoy this class.
I thought she was very willing and able to listen to people's opinions. People call her a hypocritical liberal feminist because she asked questions. She tried to get people to explain their viewpoints and they most often couldn't.
Excellent teacher! Encouraged people to speak and kept her own opinions out of the class.
Class and assignments very straight forward. Professor was clear and interesting.
I thought she was awesome; she only challenged people to make them think about what they were saying. I thought she was very understanding and this was one of my favorite classes i've ever taken
i had no idea that a philosophy class could be so useless
I would say that this class was the best I've had at UO. Bonnie Mann is 1000x better then I expected. What really got me was actually how open she was to dessent and how non-judgemental. She never countered anything by shutting someone down, but listened and honestly considered it. You could say ANYTHING! %100 you will learn something in her class.
She does have strong opinions, but is open to disagreement even if just for the benefit of class discussion. She is very well prepared for class, when she strays it is good, open discussion. There is a lot of reading, but it is well chosen and you learn quite a bit. She grades hard and grades better for those she agrees with. Overall, great prof.
Interesting class. She's a tough grader but a good teacher, really cares about student opinions. I can see how non-feminists would dislike her, but that's just too bad for them.
Hated that class. Her slides never made any sense and it was pointless. Shes a crazy feminist and wont listen to people who do not agree with her. Papers are graded super hand as well as some of her quizzes.
The class is hard with too many readings for a 100 level class. I did not find the quizzes/papers to be graded harshly at all (your GTF graded you) but I agree the workload is a lot for students who have never studied philo. And she DID listen to other views in class if they were made. Do not take unless well motivated-you'll be over your head.
Don't take this teacher
WOW please stop being a teacher. She goes way to fast and is not helpful with her slides. She does not give enough time for our midterms. :( i might fail
Love and Sex is an excellent class!! Bonnie is a really engaging teacher who really knows what she is talking about and likes to involve the 350+ class in somewhat of a lecture discussion... and she is good at answering any questions.
Mann certainly knew what she was talking about. However, this is the hardest class I've taken-should NOT be a 100 class. There is SOOOO much reading-so be prepared for it. The tests are a lot of writing and depending on your GTF, graded hard. But, I really did enjoy this class...it was just difficult. Mann also goes over slides Fast-so be ready.
Have had Dr. Mann for multiple classes. She is by far the best professor at the University. She is extremely intelligent and a fantastic teacher. She never wastes your time and expects you not to waste hers. The material in her classes are challenging, but only because she wants you to get the most out of your time.
Possibly the first "real" philosophy class at UO. If you've had a 200 level philosophy class before, you'll be fine, but if not, be prepared to think.
I can't fathom why anyone would say she does not listen to views.Quite the contrary, she encourages the entire class of 300+ students to engage in discussion. She does not express her own views, she thoroughly explains views of the authors we read. I learned SO much!
Love and Sex is one of the BEST classes I've taken in my years here. Dr. Mann is open-minded, humorous, and is easy to understand. She is fun and makes class interesting. Lots of reading! Exams.. fairly hard.. but the class is totally worth it.
Love and sex is a great class, but the exams are very difficult for a 100 level class. The reading is a bit much, but she's a fantastic teacher who keeps you engaged during lecture.
Terrible class. Prof. Mann is very open-minded and is nice, but the amount of required reading is ridiculous for a 100 level class. During lecture, she goes through slides way too fast to take good notes and doesn't post power points online. And, most of the content from the slides are super long quotations from the readings. Wasn't a fun class!!
Best class I've ever taken at this school, I loved it, changed my life. Learned more than in any other class. Take this!
Excellent class, excellent professor. People are right, the content is difficult and the readings are a bit long. But she really does care about her subject, and if you're willing to put in the work, you'll get so much out of a class with her. Prof. Mann has high expectations, but she truly is a quality professor.
Dr. Mann does a very good job re-capping and summarizing the author's viewpoints, only to the extent that it is complementary if you already read the readings in advance.
Her class had a lot of content that you needed to know, but as long as you read and do the study guides you will do just fine! Everyone needs to stop there ****in' about this class, really really interesting and worth your time!
Bonnie is a fabulous professor and very fair when it comes to readings, exams, and papers. She does NOT assign too much reading. Anyone who does not like her teaching style depends too much on lectures and probably doesn't read. She's the best professor I've ever had.
Bonnie Mann is amazing professor!!! This was the best class I have EVER taken!! My money was well spent!! You have to read the texts to do well in this class. Attend discussion sections and lectures and take good notes. They will come in handy when writing the three essays. Bonnie goes over topics and is incredibly thorough. Take her class!!!
I took this class as a freshman and wasn't sure what I was getting myself into at first by taking a 300 level philosophy class but Mann makes the class enjoyable and more than worthwhile. This class inspired me to minor in philosophy! The small class size was definitely a plus and made discussions a lot easier. I highly recommend taking this class!
I have taken a huge lecture class with her (philosophy of love and sex) and a tiny authors course with her. I think she is a fantastic professor. She is very intelligent, and takes the difficult texts of philosophical works and makes them much easier to understand for you. There is a lot of reading, but so are all philosophy classes. Highly recomm.
Philosophy of Love and Sex has been hands down one of the best classes I have taken at UO. But beware, it is A LOT of reading, and all tests are essays, but overall it is a very rewarding class that is a big eye opener. To this day I still reference that class and the things I learned from it. There is no textbook requirement either.
this was the first philosophy class i ever took and i was pretty excited but honestly taking this class made me resent the idea of love. Bonnie is kinda pretentious, i hated this class. i didnt do much reading at all and passed with a C but i dont think thats usually the case. discussion attendance is the most important
There is a lot of reading, but I found a lot of it to be really interesting. It was a difficult class, but I would take it again.
Amazing and life-changing, highly recommend. It's a lot of work but it's worth it. Don't skip class. Take this class seriously and you'll really enjoy it. No textbook, only print outs.
Good teacher, good lecturer. Interesting class.
Mann is definitely one of those professors who thinks that her class is more important than any other class you're taking. Material is interesting and there is no textbook, but be ready to do a lot of reading (approx 40 pages that you have to deeply read, annotate and print yourself). There are 4 tests over the term. They're take home on weekends.
in order to do well in this class you MUST READ. but the readings are interesting if philosophy is your thing. I absolutely loved this professor, it's so obvious how much she cares for her students. definitely recommend this course, i really enjoyed it
Bonnie Mann is one of the best professors I've ever had! I loved this class, it was super interesting and she makes it really relevant to today's society. There is a lot of reading and the couple of essays they assign take a while to do, but this class is 100% worth it. It's by far one of my favorite classes I have taken at UO.
Bonnie tries to spark interest in philosophy but fails at doing this. Not only does she force you to print all the readings and bring them to class instead of creating a purchasable course packet, but she makes her TAs collect the readings to make sure you've annotated them. Her lectures are superficial at best and the amount of reading is insane.
This course isn't difficult by any means. That said, she makes every aspect of the course as painful as possible. Makes her GEs take attendance, readings are collected. Will not use the projector because of an Accessible Education Requirement. Lectures pointless, not really a philosophy course. People whine about society's perceptions basically.
One of the best classes I've ever taken, partly because I found the readings to be very interesting, and partly because Bonnie Mann is an amazing teacher. She made a 300-person lecture hall feel so intimate, and even though it's been a year since I've sat in that class, her words still resonate with me. Highly recommend this course
Dr. Bonnie Mann is a privilege to have as your professor for this class. She will impact your thinking and approaches to love and sex and change your perspective on gender and sexuality - even if you agree with her. The readings she picked are well-suited to the curriculum and take-home tests are straightforward.
Plenty of participation grading to get you the grade you want in this class - so long as you attend and are engaged. Her lectures could be paced a little better. She struggles with rushing through slides and spending too much time on others. That said, structure of the class is clear and grading is precise. Good feedback and worthwhile course.
It was easy to understand what was happening throughout majority of the class. The tons of readings are "required" in a sense but I never read anything besides skimming through papers while writing midterms and I passed easily.
Professor Mann is equally intimidating and amazing. I took an author course with her and it remains one of the best classes I've ever taken. Be ready to participate, she can smell fear so make sure you've at least skimmed the readings before coming to class. The lectures themselves are fascinating, 15/10 would take another class with her.
Professor Mann was great at giving engaging, informing lectures and it was clear that she cared deeply about the topics she talked about. Attendance was a huge part of the grade and the papers were pretty easy so it's an easy A.
Dr. Mann was one of the best professors I've ever had, hands down. The class itself is incredibly challenging but in a way that makes you be more personally responsible for readings, surveys, etc. In a 300 person room, she's able to make lectures seem less boring as she adds an eccentric twist to everything.
This is the most unorganized course I have ever taken, first, off you are forbidden from using technology which really is a disadvantage because she moves really fast through lecture slides which makes it hard to keep up when your handwriting. The GE's are uncoordinated, attendance is mandatory but the grade never went toward my overall score.
Sooooo political. Dead wrong about so many things. Class was exhausting. Avoid.
Bonnie is brilliant. I find it amusing that so many reviews of her 100 level course (love and sex) are negative, as it's clear that these students are not interested in genuine philosophical inquiry. If you take philosophy seriously and actually want to learn and not just get an easy A, take an upper division with Bonnie, she won't disappoint.
Hands down the best philosophy professor at Oregon. She offers an extremely intellectually challenging Intro to Feminist Philosophy course. She's super inclusive, and though her expectations are high and workload at times overwhelming, you will find her courses to be a rewarding experience. I also recommend her 170 Love and Sex class.
Prof Mann's teaching style isn't very engaging. The course was organized, however, I found myself dreading the lectures. She's very knowledgable and course content in itself could be interesting but the way it's delivered ruins it. Participation is huge and she doesn't give you your participation grade until the last day of class.
Bonnie Mann seems like a great professor through her lectures. It is an immense amount of reading. but the topics are cool. PHIL170 is easy to get overwhelmed in, but getting good grades is do-able. I would recommend this class and this professor if you like reading and writing papers.
This is the HARDEST 100 level course Ive ever taken. Incredibly interesting, and very important lessons. I would still recommend this class, HOWEVER, you will need to dedicate a lot of time. I spent easily twice the time on this class than I did on my 300 level courses this term, reading and rereading and studying. GEs are told to grade HARD
This professor does not care about her students' learning or understanding of the material. She failed to adjust the course to coincide with the extreme adaptations students were forced to endure with remote learning. She was inflexible and uninspiring.
Bonnie is an incredible lecturer and explains the readings so well that you don't really have to do them. That said, there are some pretty hefty assignments and she expects a lot. There is a reading response essay, a midterm essay exam with 2 prompts, and an 8-10 page final paper. Grading was easy because the GE was a joke.
Professor Mann was great, a solid teacher overall, her lectures were very informational and made sense of the assigned readings. I enjoyed how transparent she is with her students.
Dr. Mann gives great lectures explaining the material in depth. She does weight well-thought out participation highly, so make sure you do the readings and come prepared to talk! Only one essay was nice, mostly reflection journals.
Professor Mann should not be teaching a course with such heavy material such as sexual assault. She is insensitive and unemotional. Worst professor.
SO many boring and tedious readings, along with a quiz, are assigned everyday you have this class. You are forced to take notes by hand but she goes through all the slides so fast that you can never write down all the information you need. This 100 level class is so much harder than any 300 level class I have taken. Don't even waste your time.
Don't take this class you will end up wanting off yourself,
worst class ever. save your time and take literally anything else this class is beyond frustrating and the style of teaching is outdated and makes for an insane amount of homework. literally my biggest mistake was taking this
I loved this class and professor Mann. Participation is a huge portion of the grade but lectures are interesting and engaging. There is a lot of readings that can be challenging but are overall interesting. Lots of great topics discussed and essays are short and easy. Great Arts and Letters credit!
I admire Dr. Mann as I have taken a few courses with her. That said, she does not seem to understand that 100-lvl classes should not be as difficult as 300 lvl courses. Philosophy of Love and Sex is not a joke, despite its subject matter. Be aware that you will do plenty of writing (3 separate essay exams) and participation matters.
May seem difficult at first but you'll see by the end of the term she's tough because she wants to create real, critical thinkers. She's honest and shares a lot about herself. Quizzes are easy if you have the reading open with the quiz and look for the answers. She finishes the course with a lecture that will make you very emotional. Worth taking.
Doctor Mann is overall a good teacher. However, she can be very forward which can come off as rude. The class requires a lot of reading and some participation but there are only 4 short essays with no final. AND the material and concepts you learn are very good and applicable. Highly recommend the class if you actually want to learn and try.
I think Mann is a great professor. I think she presents topics in an open and honest way. Though she does say her perspective on points that you may not agree on I believe that is a part of philosophy. I think she provides space to figure out your own interpretation and the essay structures are great. Lots of reading tho.
I very much enjoyed this class, Bonnie Mann is a great professor and if you are interested in productive feminist discussion take this class. This would not be an easy credit or class to sign up for and forget about. Bonnie allows note taking on computers in her higher level classes.
While the assigned seating and hand taken notes took some adjusting to, the lectures made them worth the hassle. By far one of the best lecturers I have had and I always look forward to her class along with the readings. The amount assigned is really pretty minimal and easy to get through, and the quizzes take maybe 10 minutes max.
By far one of the best lecturers I have ever had. While the assigned seating and hand taken notes were an adjustment, the classes and topics covered are by far worth it. The readings and quizzes are pretty easy and will only take up maybe 30-45 minutes of time. The discussions we have in a 300 person lecture hall are very interesting and worth it.
Great at introducing philosophical concepts to people who haven't read philosophy before. Participation in lectures is required. Very introspective class
Very good professor, material is pretty interesting so the lectures aren't boring. Attendance is mandatory. There is a lot of reading but it's all very doable with and the reading quizzes are super easy. Tests are easy and graded lightly.
awesome professor
Dr. Mann is a great professor. Does her best to involve the class in discussion even with a 300+ person lecture. Not a philosophy person but she makes it fun and interesting. Very fun class and she can be pretty funny too. Only bad thing is that she doesn't tell you the prompts to the timed written tests in advance and you only get a quote sheet.
3 reading quizzes a week on average but they were pretty light after the first unit. We also did surveys that were fun and we compared scores. The content is so interesting and not as freaky as I thought it'd be. She's very funny and really cool. No final, only an in class essay exam each unit.
Bonnie Mans lectures were engaging. She was very funny and I truly enjoyed her class. There's 4 written essay exams, everything after unit 1 is light however they don't tell you the prompts before hand.
I think the class is a great fit for those who really want to dive deep into the idea of love. You do learn a lot. My only issue with the class is the grading which is god awful. Literally attendance will make or break your grade. I find it a little unfair that attendance is 40% of the total grade. You do all the work, miss a few and are screwed.
Great, funny, and intelligent professor. Do the readings assigned and you will be fine but they are thick! If you don't like reading it could be tough. Her lectures are thought provoking, engaging, and highly entertaining. She does not post slides so lectures are mandatory.
