Worst teacher ever.. I mean it. She does not seem to know anything about the subject. She teaches right out of the book. She cannot explain anything with any ounce of clarity and then wonders why the entire class fails her quizzes. If you want to hate science, she's your teacher.
Awful, Awful, Awful. I love biology and want to major in it. Wants things identified from her own lousy drawings on tests and then wants details not in the book.
WORST teacher ever, not helpful, she doesn't know what she is teaching (she has to get back to you with answers to questions), first test was chapters 1-8. Lectures are dry, study guides do not help (she purposely tricks you)
horrible...for a GE this class is ridiculous. Quizzes are unreasonable and tests even worse...brand new teacher and my grade is suffering because of it! the class average started and is staying strong at an F!
I have Dr. Ripley for biology lab right now and those comments must be from the slackers. She's thorough in lecture and she's always willing to help us. All you need to do is stick around after the lecture and participate in the lab, study your notes and you will do fine on the quizzes. LAZY people will not do good but you're in COLLEGE now!
She is not always the most eloquent speaker but really wants to help her students learn the material and pass the class. The class was pretty easy. All info is in her lecture and she posts slides online.
Dr. Ripley is great. She is very clear during lecture/lab. Her drawings are the best. You can really tell she knows her stuff! If you read and review, you will do great. Participation is a must! She is a great addition to Grossmont!
Her class is not easy, you will have to work hard in order to receive a satisfactory grade but she is very helpful. From my experience with her I would think those that are complaining on here on the ones who need someone other than themselves to blame for their not putting in the necessary time or effort. A+ professor highly recommended.
i'm not sure what professor some of these kids had, but I am a straight A student and I am struggling in her class to keep a C. I am a math and science person, and am getting an A in the other science class I'm taking. Her lectures are not clear, and the quizzes for lecture are harder than most of my midterms were this semester.
She is very difficult to get a good grade. When she hand out study guides she says that some questions may not be on here and that some questions will not be on the test! What is the point of a study guide then. When you ask questions she cant answer them and has to get back to you. Although she does this is her profession and she cant answer some
Not always crystal clear but very helpful. If there is ever anything you dont understand just go by during her office hours.
she was never in her office whenever i went to see her(despite posted hours), vague drawings, totally unhelpful finally dropped the class average grade in class was a 64% and i was doing better than that
Horrible teacher. First test felt like a midterm, study guides are useless. Power Points do not have a lot of her own inforamtion. There are a lot of pictures, diagrams, and graphs from the book. I would not recommend taking her! She can't even answer questions you have when you ask them. Our class had a 54% average from the tests!!
Save yourself the time, don't do it. Study guides are useless. I'm an A student and don't get higher than Bs on her tests. Lab is easy, but lecture not so much, since her tests are ridiculous. Just find a better teacher. Seriously. Save your GPA, who knows what she's about to do to mine!
Awful, just plain AWFUL. She has no idea what she is talking about. When asked questions, she must "get back to you" because she has no idea how to answer them. The tests are much more indepth then lead to believe. The study guides are completely useless. Do anything you can to avoid taking this class!!!! Atleast lab was easy though :]
Ripley is a new professor still trying to get a feel for students, but it is obvious to me that other students posting here did not know what to expect in a science class. It isn't high school anymore, you need to study very hard and daily, or you will not do well in college science. She did a good job preparing me for major courses.
i am a 3.8 senior at ucsd who needed to get this beginning bio class out of the way to graduate and i just wanted to agree with most of the comments here. She is AWFUL!!! the worst teacher i have ever had
You should be a highly independent studier to take her course. Lectures are not in depth, but she posts them online. It is better to stay home and in depth study than attend. Do well in lab quizzes (25%overall grade) they help. Go to her and ask for help, bec if you show her you are REALLY trying and putting in effot, she will help you pass.
the hardest class ever do not take unless u are a whiz at bio already. half the class will not pass
Some might say, that this isn't high school any more and you have to study hard to get anywhere. This is true! However, this teacher is just straight ridiculous. THe things we study in class, and on study guides are no where on the tests. You could have studied all night and be feeling super confident... and then the test looks like arabic.
Bonnie teaches well. if you want to prefect BIO & grab every little detail, work hard & get a B. She's the teacher 4 you... if you want a good grade NOT for you. Bio is her passion and she forgets not everyone is as interested in it as she is. 4 "appearance" I found her cute. she has short hair and a long hair type of guy.
Professor Ripley is very nice and I am sure she wants her students to pass. But, she makes it impossible with her study guide that have nothing to do with the test! You could pass the class if you are already full with an abundant knowledge if Biology if not YOUR BONED!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent teacher. I took her for lab. She explained the processes well, was very helpful if you had a problem, and knowledgeable. Her lectures weren't very exciting, so you need some interest in the subject to be interested. All that was required was taking lab quizzes (not hard) and attending field trips (instant full credit, no quiz).
She is a horrible teacher! Unless u have a photographic memmory or u already have a huge background knowledge in science DONT take her! I have a 3.5 GPA and this class brought me down cause i got a D in it & ive never recieved below a B in my life. Now i have to retake it to bring my GPA back up! :(
Great Teacher
Awesome teacher! She explains things very well & to the detail, draws great pics that help you understand things, and is very helpful if you have a question. She is very animated, funny, and sweet. You can tell she really loves bio and teaching, which is great and it passes onto a lot of her students.
This may sound really petty, but she has a very difficult voice to listen to. i know its not much, and it might not bother some people, but if you are sensitive like me, i think you would agree. also, the statistic class is super boring, but its math and biology mixed into one...
She is a very nice professor, though she is a hard grader. It is hard to pass her class. She is a nice person, and is very intelligent, just she grades hard and tests and quizes are hard. Posts study guides, but half of what she posts, is not on the exam...
My advice print out slides before class so all you have to write down is the extra info and print out study guides and answer questions as she goes though the lecture you will do much better if you do this. Can get 10 extra credit points so dont miss class or lab extremely independent but she will help you with everything just ask.
Dr. Ripley is a fabulous professor! she gives you all the tools you need to be successful. She's very helpful and cares enough to learn your name. It is up to you to do the work. Creating a study group to review the study guide is very helpful. Lots of work, very rewarding experience. Her class prepares you to be a great student.
she is very monotone and really hard to listen to. Her lectures are boring but if you pay attention and take notes you'll be fine, you really don't need the book
Dr. Ripely is diffenately willing to help if needed but her lectures are hard to follow.
I had such a miserable time. It was only 1 unit but the work was well worth 3. Quizzes were NOT easy. You need to study in-depth, like look up every piece of info on the Internet. The links on Blackboard were only useful half of the time, which can still hurt you down to a D/F. If you really need this class, be sure to cover every fact on your own.
Overall she is a good teacher. Study guide is available at the beginning of each unit. It is essential to read the chapters and print the power points because her teaching style can be VERY confusing if you don't study the material after.
Dr. Ripley is a great teacher. I've never done well in Biology, and now im passing with a B. She has helped me out alot. Best part, she grades on a curve! Quizzes are hard but she has study guides for them. If you really pay attention and work through the study guide, you should do just fine.
study the guide, read the book if you do not understand. see her during office hours. study !!! and definately study what she WRITES ON THE BOARD!!!!!
Dr. Ripley is a genius she is really passionate about bio and she really knows her stuff. She is more than willing to answer any questions you might have. Her lectures can be difficult to follow so you should study the material thoroughly if you want an A in this class. She provides study guides, powerpoints and links on blackboard that are useful.
Great teacher! To get an A attendance is mandatory. Teaching style is slightly off, she seems to present theories in the wrong orders, and her test questions can make you feel dyslexic. She provides great study guides and power points can all be printed.
Good, Fair teacher who is willing to answer any questions and help with the course. Some of the lectures and test question may be a little off but if you ask it will be no problem. There were many students in her class who paid little attention and didn't study, and couldn't understand why they couldn't get higher than a D
She is a great biology teacher! I wish she was teaching all sciences classes! She makes students interested in learning biology and try to help all students who want to pass her class! She provides study guide and all lecture notes! Just read the chapter and do study guide, then you will pass with at least B!
Ripley is very unapproachable, I would definitely classify her as socially awkward and public speaking is not her forte. Study guides are alright, lectures are boring , and lab is decent. Overall, I would recommend taking another Bio teacher one who cares about your ability to learn the material efficiently
she is very monotone and really hard to listen to. Her lectures are boring and completely disorganized! If you want to get a good grade don't take her. She has no social skills and can be very rude to her students. Her lecture and tests are ALL OVER THE PLACE. It seems like she has no clue about what she is teaching even though she has a PHD :/ BAD
Great teacher, all lectures online, study guides show what topics are on tests. final is not cumulative, labs don't have any write ups, but there are quizzes every week in lab. can't wait to take her again.
PERSONALLY WAS NOT A FAN OF THIS CLASS, ALL SHE DID WAS LECTURE ON POWERPOINT SLIDES. LABS WERE DECENT AND NEVER HAD TO TURN THEM IN WHICH WAS COOL. TESTS WERE HARD IF YOU DIDNT STUDY. TEACHER DEFINATELY INCORPORATED EVOLUTION OPINIONS INTO TEACHINGS.
Professor Ripley is a very organized professor and she has very organized study guides but I wouldn't recommend her class. Her lectures were long and boring. She really likes marine biology but doesn't know as much as far as medical biology. I wouldnt take her class if you are majoring in a medical profession.
I really like the way Dr. Ripley teaches. She is super smart. Definitely someone to look up to. She inspires me to do my best.
I had to drop another Science class to focus on this one but I don't regret it. It's challenging. No study guide. Geez, READ the book! If you think you can pass by just showing up, lol good luck. If Bio is your life, you'll love this class, especially the labs. Def. take her class over anything. Cuyamaca's version is not transferable, dont even try
She refuses to drop any test, quiz or hw. Doesn't believe in curves nor does she offer extra credit. So expect no sympathy from her, at all. Just read the book AND pay attention in class! Recording her lectures made a huge difference on my grade. Expect to input several hours of studying.
Ripley is an awesome professor! I'm so glad I took her for Bio 120. To succeed in her class, you have to read the book, her slides, do the study guide, and take good notes during lab(there's a quiz every lab on the one before it).Simple! There is no cumulative final or lab reports. She also drops 3 lab quizzes and is really approachable.
Not an easy Class, but if you pay attention carefully in her lectures, and read the book, you will succeed in test that are quite challenging!! Labs its another story. I just simply loved it, if you like working with animals, plants, and dissections this is for you! Quizzes are a bit hard but still you have tu put some study hours! No study guides!
Biostatiscs was fun, but a bit challenging... At first everything seems hard, but later on the formulas will come into ur mind right away! The final is the best of all, opportunity to get back in track and is in computer!! You will definetely learn how to use excel, eventhough you think you already knowl!!!
An interesting class taught by a very passionate professor. She is always willing to help you and she is full of interesting facts. It was a challenging class. You definitely need to keep up with the lecture, print out the slides before hand and go over them, READ THE BOOK, and try to keep your absent days to a minimum, 1-2 tops...
Dr. Ripley is a strikingly intelligent woman. The tests were difficult, however the study guides were extremely helpful. I walked out of her class a better student as a whole, and was sad when the semester was over. I strongly advise taking her class, but to get an A you will need to actually study (A LOT).
Professor Ripley is a good teacher who is passionate about the topic of biology. Her exams are a kind of difficult because its out of 50 and she does not curve so you need to score 45 or higher for an A. In my opinion, a textbook is not required for this class because her power point lectures + exam study guide are available online.
I am currently a student at SDSU. I transferred from Grossmont College and while I was there I had to take Bio 120. Unfortunately I took it with Bonnie and to this day I still have nightmares about her. I left her class scarred and hated Bio since then. Avoid her impossible tests and pointless labs
Dr. Ripley was a good teacher. The class is easy as long as you take good notes during lecture and use the study guide. The test questions basically come from the study guide, so make it your best friend. I enjoyed her class.
Dr. Ripley is a great professor. Her class is pretty difficult due to the massive amount of information required for the class, but she is very interesting and has a funny sense of humor. Her tests are really hard, and the whole class requires a LOT of studying, but I feel as though I left with better study habits.
She is a pretty difficult teacher. Tests are consisted on what is on her lectures but you have to study it thoroughly through the book to get full credit. Very few people got an A and I had to study real hard for a B. the people who dropped are the same people who didn't study. No extra credit or curving either
I took Professor Ripley some time ago for bio240,and she's one of the smartest science professors grossmont have ever had; Im currently attending Med School and most of the stuff you'll be seeing with her will eventually pop up in your career if you're planning in going on to the medical field,,, study hard, and get the most of her! no regrets
a lot of teachers seem to be convinced that making a fairly easy class unnecessarily impossible presents them as intelligent and important figures. How can you turn a class that is solely dependent on memorization into torture? By being all over the place, unorganized, unrealistic, etc. Being able to memorize and repeat doesnt qualify as being smart
an average of 3-4 people get As on tests. seems like she enjoys making the material harder than it needs to be. at least break it into more than 4 tests or give extra credit if you're gonna (fail to) teach this much..bad teacher! avoid her
Dr. Ripley is an amazing professor! She is extremely passionate, and has a lot of fun in class. This class is difficult bc she has to teach everything SDSU AND UCSD requires combined! That is no easy task, and she handles it with dedication and poise. Life is hard if you want to get somewhere important. Stop blaming the teacher for your laziness.
Dr. Ripley is very compassionate for her work and her students. She wants you to succeed. But she still needs you to understand the material and put forth the effort. Everything on the test is talked about in the lecture and the power-point. Some material is extremely complex and if you don't understand it you will need to read the chapter.
Dr. Ripley has been my favorite professor. She is definitely there for you to comprehend the material. This class has a lot of material and it is your job to learn outside of class in order to pass the course with a good grade. I loved that if I did not understand something I knew Dr. Ripley will help me during her office hours.
Bonnie Ripley is by far the best teacher on campus. She cares for all of her students greatly. You will need to study and work for the grade you want. But the lab quizzes are open book and you can work with your lab partners. Her lab tests are not but if you just read the lab manual you'll do fine. Tests are tough so just study when you can.
Best Teacher at Grossmont College hands down! Really cares about her students. Make an effort and she will help you all the way. Lecture is everything! Book is sorta important. She will change your views about your surrounding and the world. I now I have a new found respect for all things living. She's the best. I transfred to UCSD & gonna miss her
DR. Ripley is one of the best Professors in biology department. I had her for Bio 240, she expects you to read the material before you go to the class. Paying attention in the class and reading her notes are enough to get a good grade . She gives a quiz after every lab where you work with other students almost all students get 5/5 she is helpful
Very smart teacher but the class is very tough. Read the book and take notes, she expects you to know every detail down to the book . This class was torture lots of information to take in.
Professor Ripley is passionate about her field and genuinely wants her students to connect with the material. She emphasizes the importance of biology in relation to everyday life. If you enjoy learning about plants and animals, you'll enjoy this class. Lots of work, but lots of fun as well!
the class is hard but it is not her choice but to study hard . she is the best teacher ever ever ever take her if you are a bio major cuz she will tell you a lot of things about major preparation.
She's an amazing professor and will prepare you for biology as you go further in your upper division classes. She definitely cares about her students' success.
Going to lecture is extremely important - a vast majority of the tests are based on her lectures. She is very straightforward, clear, helpful, and honestly, just a lovely woman. Take very good notes or record the lectures. Biggest challenge is the sheer amount of material - the A is there if your willing to put in the time.
Dr. Ripley is one of the best professors I have had at Grossmont. Biology itself is not an easy subject, so don't go to class expecting an easy A. You have to earn your grade. I would definitely recommend this class. It is really interesting and Dr. Ripley is very sweet and helpful. I love her !
Dr. Ripley is a wonderful professor. She explains the material very well and answers questions. Her exams are moderate and she gives great feedback. She is also willing to help students with various things other than biology and she dedicates herself to making he students successful.
She is a very good professor and the best point is that she covers most of the exam questions in the board, so if you like biology and do pay attention, she is the best.
The best instructor in the whole world. She cares a lot about the students. Very helpful. Gives a positive energy. She explains almost everything
She is the toughest teacher. No extra credit at all. You need to take advantage of every single point in every home work. Hard exams ( multiple chose question are from the book. some of them are easy but the other are somewhere in the book that you wont even find) written questions are hard also because she deducted points no matter what.
Doctor Ripley is the best bio instructor. She is so respectful and helpful, if you want to get an A in this class, you have to study the lectures at least once a week. Her exams are mostly from the notes and the slides, but you have to read at least a summary of the chapter to understand the slides more. Highly recommended for anyone wants to learn
Best biology professor at Grossmont and Cuyamaca. she writes everything important on the board. class is very interesting.
I dont know what to start with! She made biology a really hard class! However some students like her because she has her favorite! I study all night I study the book the note I watched videos on YouTube I leave the exam and thinking I will get A but thats never happened she was tough grader and her class is awful! More than half the class failed
It's possible to get an A in this class once you understand how to study for this class. Looking over notes, powerpoints, and voice recording lectures) are key to scoring well on the exams. Don't waste your time on youtube videos. Everything on her exams comes straight out of the lecture or what she talked about, so make sure to go!
Dr. Ripley literally gives the most fair exams ever!!! As long as you read the lab manual and take notes on it and attend her class, you will do amazing in her course. She is understanding that she allowed note use for our exams. She always answers her emails and sets for you reminders of things you need to do in case you forget. She's wonderful
Ripley is awesome; a stunning example of what an educator should be. I found her exams to be a bit tough, but she had plenty of other graded opportunities to weigh that out- I took her exam grading as learning opportunities. Great labs for makeshift COVID times, easy to make office hrs appts with, & will give you many chances to improve your grade.
professor Ripley is a great professor ! there is a lot of material to cover in lecture and in lab did her best make suer everyone understand for this class being on line she has prerecorded videos of lecturers make suer you watch them before going to class . plus if you need help she is there for you and is very helpful in her office hours.
She is super nice, BUT A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!!!! also super tough grader. She will pick your assignment apart just to make off points. Her instructions are not clear.
Prof Ripley is one of the most caring professors I've ever had. She is very lenient on work and just wants you to do your best. All labs were online so coming in person was optional even though they were engaging and really interesting. Her lectures are LONG but interesting. She's obviously passionate about her work, ask her anything. def recommend
I don't let the rating fool you.I can't tell you how much I dislike this class. It's overwhelming too many thing to take on. The lap is not even a lap, it's just pure lecture. you have exam for the actual lecture and you also have quiz for the lecture in the lap. the lap is just 4 hours of lecture, NOT FUN.
