Awesome teacher. Taught me English 100 and creative writing at KCC. Excited she is here at UH now. Take her!
Had her when she was teaching at KCC. Great class. Cares about her students.
I took her at KCC but I am looking forward to taking a literature course with her. She is an awesome teacher! She opens your mind to a lot and you learn how English relates to other classes and life. Grades fair. Expects you to work! But the class is fun!
Nice professor. Really cares about her students. Teaches a wide range of material to show how writing applies to all kinds of topics and fields. I'm an engineering major and thought of minoring in English after this course. It was that good!
I didn't want to take this class but it was mandatory. I waited to take it, but have to to graduate since I am a junior. I ended up liking English so much that I am thinking about minoring in it! Tnx Nani!
Cool instructor. Funny. Tells a lot of stories. Hard at times but fair. Liked the films and learned to argue better. Liked the activities but not enough. Did not like reading but saw value. Became a better writer and more confident.
Great class. Learned a lot. Take it!
Best teacher I ever had. She knows her stuff and takes the time to explain things if you do not get it. I've met with her for two hours and she did not complain! She helped with other class papers too. She is a student herself so she understands the pressure and is fair with workload but still gave us alot!
Loved this class and the instructor so much I am taking her literature class in the spring.
Learned a lot about writing and about Hawai'i. Liked the prof. She is cool. Pretty organized. A bit stressed sometimes but cuz she's also a PhD student. She is easy to talk to and she explains things well. Not a stuff prof.
Good teacher. Learned a lot. Pretty much what I expected from an English 100 course, writing papers and all, but a bit more radical since the teach was into Immortal Technique. That was cool.
I love this class! Magical Worlds. Take it. You'll love the reading, the exercises, the homework was cool, and the teacher is awesome! She teaches that you need to ignore your ego and realize the negative things you tell yourself are a delusion. You can write. She gave me so much confidence that I know I can write and there will an audience.
Awesome class! Everything I expected and more. The reading selection was good and I learned so much about writing. I want to actually write short stories now.
Magical Worlds is an awesome class! I learned so much and the professor was so helpful and understanding of students' situation! Highly recommend taking a class with Nani :)
Wonderful teacher
I love this professor; I have no qualms about taking another class from her should she teach a different course. She gives students a different outlook on their writing skills, at whatever point they may be. Excellent instructor. Highly recommended!
Excellent teaching and very helpful. I would recommend this instructor to my friends.
I looked forward to coming to this class all semester. I liked the reading list and I liked writing the short story. Good instructor. She made the class fun. Would recommend or take her again.
A very fun and energetic professor! If you love Harry Potter, you'll get along great with Bonnie - she's obsessed! Highly recommended and she's super fun!
Awesome class, super fun professor. I highly recommend taking a class from this professor. She's really nice and funny, and makes class interesting.
Go see her in person during her office hours! She is great with feedback and offered a lot of techniques. I didn't get much feedback on the drafts I wrote, but she gave so much in our meeting. I would highly recommend. This was one of my best classes!
Nani is a fabulous teacher. She is very talented and offered such a great experience. She really should be an actress because she is very entertaining. She made me feel I could write anything and it was okay. I think from a writer's POV now. Take her Magical Worlds class. Yes, she is HP freak but you'd never know looking at her. Wizards rule
I never once thought of missing this class, because it was very fun. Not only fun but informative too. I enjoyed the exercises and readings a lot. She gave you confidence in yourself and in your writing and I think thats awesome!
took this class in summer. If you've taken AP Eng, or think you're badass at Eng, then DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. It feels like an introductory class. You'd learn alot more by reading Harry Potter books. Basically, it's mostly about keeping up with readings, discussion circles about book, and writing your own stories. No one teach u be creative
Took in summer, here's schedule: read books, go to class, discuss it with whole class as a group for a whole day. write analysis papers on 1film, 1book, final project = write a story (novel, shortstory, comicbook, w/e). Final exam = test on Harry Potter, and literary terms. Excellent for ESL students, it help me adjust to English language. :)
Nani was an excellent instructor, giving us a lot of freedom to discuss our ideas about the novels we read and to explore ideas we wanted to write about. There are two papers that were ok but I enjoyed writing the short story best. I appreciate what writers do!
I never knew fairy tales were so deep! There was a plethora of genres we read and I really enjoyed Carter's Bloody Chamber and Rushdie's Haroun. Summer class seemed too short to do a creative writing class with reading so much literature. I agree this is listed as an introductory class. It is writing intensive.
Nani has a great sense of humor and I loved her class. She acts like one of the students at times. The coursework was not all that hard, and she allows revisions on essays and stories. She also spent a lot of extra time assisting students. I would love to take another one of her classes!
I can say with confidence that I can write a better argument so Nani's course did its job. She's different than most teachers but her approach overall was effective. I learned and I laughed. She tells stories that don't always relate but most do. She talks about creative writing a lot but we had good arguments in class that made me think deeply
this class bettered my rhetoric so all in all its a good class. allows revisions of papers and if you get As you don't have a final. need to check your email pretty often because she sends out assignments this way.
I took Nani's class over the summer and really enjoyed it. The assignments helped me improve my creative writing and gave me confidence as a writer overall. She was also very helpful in providing suggestions for reading material (as I am interested in becoming a creative writer).
I don't know why the university requires us to take 190 as transfer students but in the end this course's professor proved very useful. Although laid-back most of the time, the professor provided a lot of useful material that will help me succeed at UH. I would recommend her because she was sincere and I learned a lot.
ABSOLUTELY my FAV class ever! I did not know what to expect but I regret not taking this class during the regular semester instead of summer because it went by TOO fast. But then again, OMG, I would not have met all my cool classmates and Nani too! (Yes, I used an exclamation mark, Nani! There it is again.) =D Super class.
To be honest I thought I was going to hate it and love it too.
I really liked this class but it definitely was A LOT of writing. As long as you do the work and improve your writing over the semester, you'll get at least an A-. Nani was super cool and really wanted to get to know all of us. Reading fairytales and their adaptations were fun. We read Harry Potter too :)
She's a fantastic teacher. However, she piles the writing assignments on and sometimes I just couldn't keep up. She's also very forgiving though and extremely personable. I will take her again if possible.
I was worried about this class at first since there was a lot of reading but the class turned out to be SO COOL. Our teacher got sick midway thru but she was a real hero like the characters we read and watched. Don't miss class!
I love creative writing and I loved Nani's creative writing class this summer. The best I have ever taken. I am a senior, graduating with a creative writing thesis and I learned more in this class than all did in all the time I was in the program. I would take here again in a heart's beat. Thanks Nani! You're awesome.
English 100 is required. Take it from Nani. Hated MLA and the research paper. Makes you do an annotated bibliography and it was hard. Glad I took it from her.
Good class. A lot of review but then the teacher gave helpful tips and advice on how to navigate college and writing from various majors. She's really approachable for a professor. I would take another class from Nani.
My friend and I took this class together and decided to do reviews on Nani's class. We both liked her class a lot and learned a lot even though it had a lot of review. I improved a lot in my writing and learned more than my friend who was in AP classes in HS. Take 100 from Nani, you will not regret it!
The class is good, have to take it at UH anyway, but the instructor was GREAT!! She has helped me with scholarship application, even after the class ended. She taught us more than writing papers and I am very grateful for her. Hands freakin' down I would recommend her.
Was an okay class. Had to take. A lot was refresher from AP ENG in high school but then there were a lot of helpful tips the teacher gave. She was the best part of the class. I learn some new things with MLA and library skills. Good course to take with this instructor.
Two of my fav teachers at UH are Professor Nani Ross and Professor Maile Gresham. I took Nani's 273 years ago and she recommended Maile and I got into her class that next semester. WAY COOL. I was so thrilled to have both these teachers and now I am a writer. Thanks ladies!
I loved this course on heroes and heroines. I wish Professor Ross would teach more classes like this. I learned so much and the readers were all great, even the one about Odysseus. I can't wait to take another class from her.
I'm having so much fun in this scriptwriting course that I highly recommend it. I've never written a script before so I was freaking out but it's been so fun doing so and reading all the other films and tv shows from real films to classmates. I think I want to change majors from journalism to English because of it. Take this class!!!
Awesome class, nice professor, fair grading and writing. I am so addicted to the shows we read and watched. GOT rules. Reading scripts was just okay compared to watching the movies and tv but thats okay. Workshop was better than I thought. Final okay and final script challenging over a 6 weeks.
Amazing class! As a Diseny fan I didn't realize fairy tales were so deep and complex. the instructor was great and the content although alot was manageable.
Just finished a summer course in Hawaii. Worth the $. The instructor was WAY better than the teachers at my college and she filled in gaps. I'm graduating this fall and definitely will go on to grad school because her encouragement. Class was easier for me as an English major with two papers and weekly postings+. I wrote more than classmates.
This class is awesome. Nani is awesome. The homework is awesome. My fellow writers are awesome. This is by far the best class I have had at UH and we are not even done yet. I am a biology major so I didn't think I would like this class as much as I do. It really is my fav. I've learned so much about writing.
This is my fun class. I'm taking it this semester cuz I have a ton of science. All I can say is I thought I would hate this class and it turns out I love, love, love it! Best class EVER. Not only am I writing for fun but I am SO hooked on the shows we watch in class. I never thought I could write so much and LOVE IT!
Best class ever at UH! Intense though. Ha d to write so much over 6 week course this summer. A very talented group and I felt so overwhelmed but I got exactly what I wanted from this fierce writing class and the instructor was incredibly helpful.
Good teacher. Not as helpful as I expected but still very clear with her lessons. At times she could be a tad rude but you have to try a little harder to receive an A in the class.
Wow, I have a totally different perspective of Nani and her teaching style. She never once was rude in class, in fact, she was very nice and helpful. always. She tried to include my interests and others into her examples. I walked away feel like I new what was expected of me in college. I'd take her again.
Definitely would recommend. I didn't know what to expect but listening to other students about their english class makes me feel lucky I got Nani's class. She's awesome and cares about her students. She is fair and understands what students go through. Sometimes the class was hard but I liked how it was taught.
I've taken three classes with her and loved each of them. She is encouraging, supportive, hard-working, and always in contact with her students. Her style meshes organic with academic. Would recommend her to anyone
Awesome class if you like writing (and reading)!
Very surprised by this course. Ended up loving it. The teacher teaches class like an art class which was difficult for me since I'm so used to real academic papers and testing. We wrote creative exercises that at first seemed corny but I quickly grew to love them and discovered I was good at them. Grades fair. Lots of feedback at the end though.
Nani was a great teacher. The course was straight-forward. I enjoyed the course, the short stories more than the screenwriting. I would recommend this class and I would take a class again with this professor. She gave good feedback and always answered emails promptly. I too had to get used to the format but it helped me learn and build confidence.
Very helpful, yet picky. Wants everyone to succeed in and out of the classroom (or computer).
Took screenwriting and short stories over the summer. Best course at UH but hard because too much crammed into 6 wks. Love, love, love. But a lot of work!
I was worried about taking this class online and it was particularly more challenging once all courses at UH went online because COVID but Nani was awesome. She gives good feedback and the class was relatively easy. I just couldn't keep up as well after spring break because my other courses were not as flexible as Nani's. Take her class!!
For a person who loves english, this class was pretty tough. Super picky. Had way too much unnecessary info in the weekly posting directions, so there was A LOT to read. Does reply fast and constantly emails the class on updates.
I took her class online, and she was super helpful when I had questions. The workload is manageable, and she gives good feedback on essays. Sometimes the feedback is harsh, but it has helped my writing. There were postings due every week and 3 major papers throughout the course. She was really supportive for this being an online course!
I'd take the class again. It wasn't too hard or too easy. The teacher was nice and helpful.
I had several teammates at UH take this class. TEACHER IS WAY HELPFUL. She likes to use google and makes you do thinks over and over. but I learned a lot by doing MLA over and over. At first I didn't like it but now I do and feel more confident. Nani's fair because she offers to let you do papers over for a better grade but I ran out of time.
This class was awesome. I was scared when the first day the professor said we were going to write short stories AND screenplays. I had never written a screenplay and had no clue what to expect and i LOVE writing them. The professor was so helpful and I loved her lectures. Was really bummed we had to move online because workshop would have been fun!
Intense!! Don't take during summer!! Wish I took with the same prof but not in 6wks. Not hard not easy but a lot of work. Extra credit and tries to help. Too many emails and wordy instructions but still helpful. Cheerleader type and fair.
Nani was so awesome. The class was too. Really, really, really upset we had to move the class to online because everyone in the class looked forward to her class and seeing short films (BEAR!!!OMG!!!) and sharing ideas. Darn COVID! Take her when she teaches live. Online was okay but her class is better in person. Miss her and my classmates.
Nani is very caring and doesn't want anyone to fail. She cares how you are doing. Gives good feedback but requires Google Docs. (I like Pages.) Took summer, fast, rather have taken during the regular semester, but got an A. MLA was a pain.
I did not expect to fall in LOVE with screenwriting. I dreaded taking this class. This class was the best. I now understand how to tell a story better and I will take all the great advise Nani gave as I become a cinematographer. Take screenwriting from her!!! You will not regret it. Wish I took it with her in Fall instead of summer. <3<3<3
One of the best professors at UH. Incredibly organized and gives everyone great feedback for their work. I learned a lot about formatting for screenplays and I fell in love with the process! Just follow her weekly schedules and assignments, they're pretty fun! So sad we had to move online abruptly, her classes were a joy to be in.
The workload and difficulty was not too harsh. I just finished today and pretty happy for my first semester and adjusting to the online formats. Professor Nani was understanding and gave extra credit. She even did wellness checks. I had a phone conference that helped a lot and our Laulima page was really organized and easy to follow. Not like some.
I wish Professor Ross taught advanced screenwriting or other courses and that I had her in a regular classroom (everything's online). The exercises, her feedback and insight were everything I wanted and more. I entered my first script competition today because all I learned, formatting, story, and all the ALOHA from this professor. FADE TO BLACK.
Haha!! >< Nani never canceled class for us! She did give time off and extensions which was nice. Instructions and class were clear for me (and my friends) but hey, I took online. There were 3 papers, samples, and exercises, no book. I could ask questions after class and email fine if not. Alot of video watching but not much reading. Haha!! ><
Kumu nani was amazing! I don't like English as an Engineering major. However, this turned out to be my favorite classes this semester. She is always willing to help, was super understanding, and met me loads of times to improve my papers. Highly recommend! Not too much work, just right, and she extended deadlines to help CVD stress.
I took both screenwriting as an English class and an ACM class from Professor Ross and from Professor Yoshinaga who recommended Nani. I LOVE screenwriting. It is my world and I highly recommend both professors!!! I learned so much about labs and industry from Nani and formatting, which is "half the battle." <3<3<3
The professor is super cool. Tells some stories not relevant sometimes, but she is fair and gives time off when the class needed it. She helped us all out anytime we needed it, she was extremely kind, and she made me feel like I was apart of a community (some college experience during COVID) with my classmates. Other teaches did not do this.
Throughout high school, I was not a strong writer so I was a bit nervous because I didn't know what to expect in this course. But the professor was very understanding, explained all of her instructions in detail, and we knew what she wanted. I liked Nani. Some classmates did not because the content and they didn't like to read/talk for group work.
I cant say enough great things about this class and teacher. She's my favorite ACM teacher. We watched a lot, like my favorite films and shows Boy (Taika) and Rez Dogs (Harjo), and we had film responses to write, talks about indigenous film and issues, group presentations from the book, and a final. Take Nani. You wont regret it.
If I didn't love screenwriting before taking this class with Professor Ross, I would mot definitely afterward. She made this class everything I ever wanted and she was the best ACM teacher next to Professor Flanary. You will write a lot but isn't that the point of screenwriting stories. FUN!!
I was really happy that she gave us a lot feedback on our paper and would let us fix our papers multiple times when we had mistakes that could possibly make us fail the course. The class is a lot of work but it really helped me learn how to write in MLA format.
This course had a normal amount of workload for a college course. However, I did feel a bit overwhelmed at times. The instructor provided extra time for students to finish essays and assignments if asked and offered extra credit. She was very caring and required zoom attendance and meetings outside class, which helped a lot with feedback!!!
Although she was always willing to give feedback, there were times that I felt that she was annoyed with me editing my essay while working on giving feedback. Writing essays In MLA is difficult. Every detail matters which is easy to forget sometimes. If you are going to take this course, make sure to do it her way so that you can get a good grade.
I liked that the class was online and the teacher was fair but tough. I met with her a few times and it made things easy for me. I was happy overall.
Professor Ross is an excellent teacher in starting your college journey for the required core classes like Eng 100. She gives you the right amount of tools, assignments, and peer participation. She offers lots of tutorials, examples, and will assist with any questions you may have. She is understanding, clear, and consistent.
