Whitener is a character... She skips class more than the students but is an awesome person. I like how she gives students the opportunity to be creative with their papers/projects.

Bonnie was awesome! She did not grade too strictly and was just as interested in content as grammar (major plus). She kept us interested by examining controversial subjects. It was great to be exposed to a different view of the world.

She is so funny and is very helpful. She lets you revise your paper which is very helpful. Everything we do is interesting. She is kind of a hard grader but it was worth it!

This class was super easy, and required almost no work outside of class other than the 5 papers we wrote. She will randomly take attendance, so it is best if you go to class most of the time. She is very easy to work with and keeps things interesting in class. She can be a hard grader, but you're allowed to revise one paper! Overall great class!

Bonnie is an awesome teacher! She has a great style of teaching that keeps the class as interesting as early american literature can be. She is super fun and an easy grader! I would highly recommend her class!

Very willing to work with students. Whenever I had questions on what or how I should write she would assist me by pointing me in the right direction without telling me what to do.

Class was pretty easy. We had 5 or 6 papers total and my lowest grade was a B. She did not take off many points for grammatical errors at all. I don't like English at all and this class was not bad.

Super laid back and super easy. She is extremely unorganized so be prepared for papers to change due dates a thousand times. She does make class discussion interesting and lets you write about whatever you want. Got As on all papers and gives no tests or quizzes.

Very good professor, really likes the subject, very funny. Very laid back, will let classes out early. No tests. Only time she gives quizzes is if no one read. Gives interesting side information. Assigns some homework, but is not excessive. She is disorganized, so deadlines will probably change. Strongly recommend her for English classes.

Such a great teacher! She is totally hilarious, and is very understanding. It's Easy to make a good grade, and I honestly didn't mind going to the class. She curses like a sailor, and cancels class often. I'd take her again any chance I got.

Coming from the English teachers I had back in high school, Professor Whitener was a breath of fresh air. She treats you like the adult you are, is incredibly funny, incredibly passionate, and is as human as a a college professor can be. I would highly recommend this teacher.

Dr. Whitener was great for my EN103 class. She goes through each paper step by step and you do a lot of peer reviews. She also gives you feedback on each of your papers at least once. Both of the books we read were very interesting and the other required textbooks can be helpful. I recommend Dr. Whitener.

The entire class is reading three books and writing papers on those books. However, she is very helpful with feedback and allows you to know exactly what is expected when those papers are due. There are no suprises.

Participation matters the most and to participate you need to read what she assigns. Most of the readings can be done in an hour or less. Even looking at sparknotes before class can get you through it. Show up to class, because she does take attendance occasionally. Easy quizzes, easy tests. Fun lecturer. Short papers.

Dr. Whitener is such a nice woman and really connects with the class. I absolutely loved her! She does take attendance though (attendance is required for 100 level EN courses anyway) but after 3 absences she starts to take off some points per absence. Class isn't boring and she cancels class on Fridays pretty often which was super nice. Take her!

Dr. Whitener was the first professor I ever encountered in college and I had no idea just how lucky I'd gotten. She is extremely funny, does not take herself too seriously, and will work with you extensively if you need help. Cannot recommend her enough, take her if at all possible!

All reading is online, it is supposed to be necessary but I have read 1 thing before class, the rest she talks about during class and asks for some feedback from the 2-5 people who actually read it. Sparknotes in class makes it all easy.

I took her for 101 and 102. Super nice and easy A. I usually asked her to proofread my essays a few days before it was due, and she basically fixed any issues to make sure I got an A. Loved her.

She called herself a psychopath on the first day of class, which was interesting. The material was boring, but she did try and make it interesting. Only grades are the 4 papers.

Professor Whitener is awesome! She's really funny and relatable and she makes the reading material easy to understand and she tries to even make it interesting. Easy quizzes and only two papers. Our last "paper" was free creatively so we could basically chose our own way to analyze something, which was really cool. Really nice lady.

Theres a lot of leeway. we wrote 4 papers and could turn one in a week late with no penalty. And we got to rewrite one paper at the end of the year. I didnt do reading homework once all year shes really awesome and caring and I loved her

No tests and very little homework. She has 3 papers that count as major grades, but gives you class time to work on it and you can talk to her during office hours and she will go over it. Does about 10 in class written responses and you can write about anything we read in class. Doesn't take attendance but it's helpful to listen to her lectures

Professor Whitener is a great professor and knows her stuff. Only grade is 2 major papers, 10 easy responses, and 5 quizzes (she lets you know in advance when she will do them). Definitely come to class because she gives valuable information for the quizzes and sometimes free quiz grade if low attendance.

This is the best literature class I've ever taken. her grading criteria to clear. As long as you show up to class and do the short assigned readings, you should do great! 2 major papers, 10 responses, and a few quizzes. Just read and attend class and this is an easy A!

Her class was very chill. We had only had 4 papers. I loved the environment of her classroom and how we always discussed articles.

Keeps lectures engaging and is pretty funny. Cancels class a decent amount, causing the syllabus to be inaccurate and hard to follow. Lots of in class writings based on the text read outside of class. Overall interesting class.

Dr. Whitener is a hilarious teacher. She does use a lot of profanity though... However, this English class is unlike every other one. Rather than boring instruction on what we already know, she introduces new techniques. We also read and watched cool things on popular topics during class. These things helped us see how we were supposed to analyze.

Bonnie W is a great teacher who is very reasonable. She understands what it is like to be a college student and makes it easy to succeed. Definitely would take her again.

My favorite teacher at Alabama by far. It's so refreshing to be treated like an adult by a professor. She always makes you feel like you are the smartest person in the room and validates everything you say. Take her if you get the chance, you won't regret it.

Easily the most laid-back professor I've taken here at UA. She's hilarious, but also professional and knowledgeable. It's clear that she preps her lectures and that she cares about the topics on which she teaches. Also, she's flexible and will work with assignments and due dates when necessary.

Do the readings and show up to class , it will make writing the papers, midterm and final much eaiser.

Bonnie is such a cool teacher. She is accessible out of class and just wants the best for her students. She was very kind when things went online and understood that personal lives matter and respects her students. 5 quizzes that are 1 page, 2 essays, and midterm and final online. She tries to grade to help her students and sees if they are trying.

Bonnie is one of the nicest professors I have ever taken. I had her in the middle of the corona outbreak and she was soooo understanding and gave us all As just for submitting the assignments. She was very respectful and understood that we have other classes and lives going on outside of her lit class. She was a very easy, respectable teacher!

Literally like 4 journal entries all semester and the final was to create a Spotify playlist. Very caring and absolutely hilarious. I read like two things the whole class.

I had her for English 210 during the pandemic. So her class was online the entire semester. We met on zoom and talked about the reading that we were assigned. Do the readings, comment in class, and you pass. There were also a few papers (one page long) that were about how we felt. She was super helpful and super kind. I would take her again.

Dr. Whitener is great for EN 102. The class was randomly moved online a week before classes started and it was more common for her to cancel class than to have it. You can turn in essays literally whenever you want. The work is so easy, very minimal homework or reading. You do have to attend class, however, she never cold calls.

Class meetings rarely lasted the full time. She was extremely helpful with each writing assignment and pushed back due dates if necessary. I would definitely take her again.

Class meetings were on Zoom and rarely lasted more than 30 mins. She was really helpful when it came to writing assignments and wasn't strict at all about due dates. I'm a good writer, but in my opinion I didn't hand in a single assignment that really reflected that and still made 100s on everything. You have to really be trying to fail this class.

Professor Whitener understands that the last thing college students want to do is read a super long story and talk about it in class. But, she makes the stories easy to understand even if you did not read and she doesn't really care if you didn't read. She is a pretty easy grader as long as you follow what she writes on the assignment sheet

I abs loved Dr. Whitener! If you get the chance, TAKE HER CLASS! She's a fair grader and if you don't like a grade you get on a paper you can revise it and get points back. She's super chill and is good about responding to questions over group me and email. Theres rarely ever homework and gives a lot of time to work on essays in class

I was having a tough semester personally and Dr.Whitener was the most understanding and helpful. she wants you to do well and has a great understanding of what she is teaching. she cancels class a lot too and even made the friday classes online I would 100 percent take again

She is a riot tbh. Absolutely loved her class. She grades very easily and is super chill. She's pretty lenient with due dates if you just keep her in the loop (tell her if you might not get it in on time or if you completely forgot about an assignment). Class is mandatory but she would have class on Zoom A LOT. I think she liked staying home lol.

Class is on Zoom on Friday and she randomly takes attendance. I wanted an English class that would not hurt my GPA for nursing and I love it! I would 100% take her again she is amazing!! Dr. Whitener is a bit of a character and picks some interesting stuff for us to read, but she is a phenomenal teacher. She goes into the historical background of the texts and gives summaries before discussions. She also often cancels class, and Friday is online. If you don't have time to read the text, read a summary. Easy grader + few assignments

Quite a character, but she's a good prof. Attendance is mandatory, but you mostly just sit and listen to her tangents, and she moves the class to Zoom a lot. She grades leniently but is hard to reach, is slow with emails, and only updates her grades at the end of the semester.

Sweet lady, but she leans very far left politically. She showed a documentary in the class called "13th" that pushes debunked liberal talking points and villainizes conservatives in the process. I would recommend completely zoning out when this is shown in class.

If you lack common sense and ask dumb questions in regards to turn in dates or content that is clearly stated online she can come off as rude but she genuinely tries her best to help you and help you learn. Very essay heavy class but if you're a decent writer and apply yourself to the topics you will have a guaranteed A.

Such a sweet lady. While she is incredibly liberal and preaches it, she is super nice. She understands most of us don't want to be here and works with us to make it somewhat entertaining. Put in a little bit of effort and you'll be great. Even AI summary before class will prepare you. Funny, and she loves to cancel class. Just show up that's all.

I loved her! She is such a cool lady and totally hilarious. She understood that most of us didn't really want to be learning about British Lit, so she gave us fun readings and easy assignments. She canceled class/let us out early a lot. Definitely take her if you need a lit class!!

This class was extremely easy and you should be able to pass with an A. All she really asks of us is to read the readings she assigns and to be able to discuss questions in class. She's super chill and is very understanding of her students. She cancels class a lot and does random attendance checks. very liberal

Great teacher, class discussions are often interesting and relevant to modern day, despite the historical texts. Does not grade too harshly. Gives you feedback if you ask for it. Overall, I enjoyed my time in this class, which is rare for me in an English class. Would recommend taking this course if you need a literature credit.
