Easy Papers, Fun Class, Study for Quizzes
Almost a complete waste of time. Offered no constructive critism or even academic critism of the work presented. Very disappointing.
Zobell teaches advanced fiction writing in the college there are very few assignments however they are in depth and take time to write and rewrite. your critic is not her, but your peers who read your stories if you want to be a writer take her classes

A complete waste of time. It was a very easy class but be prepared to be treated like you're in kindergarden. She knows very little about the subject matter and it seems like it's the first time she's ever seen MLA. It is a VERY easy class though...
Extermely scatter-brained,students suffer because of it!
Good teacher, may skip around a little, but she explains the assigned readings fairly thoroughly. Could be a little more specific on what is expected in the writings, though.
For starters, she never once arrived to class on time. Learning suffered as a result. Assignments were not real clear, drop rate was quite high. Lots of reading, 4 papers, and 2 in class papers.
Can be by far one of the worst english teachers in the world. She dosent even know what shes saying half the time! Never can tell whats due or when, and the pop quizzes are outrageous!Very HARD grader, and will give you NO help. "look it up" s
Absolutely the worst poor ass teacher in the world. Can't teach for ****, if you planning to pick her class, you are wasting your time and money, and you'll end up being more stupid than you are at the beginning of the semester.
English students beware!
I spend most of my time in this class wondering what she's talking about, then debate whether or not she even understands what she's talking about. If you want an ex. of an absent-minded professor then here it is. Any help is denied since she's so busy.
Waste of time. Had to dumb down my papers to get an A. Forget everything you learn from her. Contradicts herself constantly.
Took this class as an honors. Not hard, yes she is scatter brained, but if you got this far in english, reviewing how to write an essay isn't necessary. Do the assignments, which are few, and you'll get an A.
not helpful, graded quizes incorrectly, i had to prove my answers were correct by citing references from the book.
She is so unorganized and the classes are very unstructured...do not take this professor usless you are totally desperate.
She's always 10 minutes late. She's very scattered, seems confused a lot. She grades papers very subjectively. I could spend the entire period correcting the improper language she uses. I had to dumb down my papers to get better grades. I guess it's true; those who can't do, teach.
not helpful at all, doesnt explain anyhing well at all. late to class by at least 10 minutes, have to dumb down essays for her to understand themfrogets everything 5 minutes after she says them...i would not recommend takimng any of her english classes, and if you do...good luck!!
This was a waste of a semester. One of the worst teachers on the campous by far.She doesnt explain anything right, gets off track, and grades very subjectivly. When a thought is complex she wants you to rewrite it so that morons will understand.would i recomend anyone put them selves throgh this NO!
She is awesome! Always there to help you. Grades fairly and more times than not she is in a good mood!!
She is a good English teacher everytime when a student has a question she is more than happy to stay after class and answer any question she also tries her best to help DSPS students
Habitually late and doesn't make assignments clear. Grades based on whether she likes you or not and chances are, unless you are willing to kiss her ass all semester, she wont like you. She also emphasizes the wrong syllables of words to make statements sound like questions.
She always comes in smelling like smoke. She is also moody, you never really know what to expect. She is also atleast 5 minutes late to EVERY class without fail.
I hate her. She is the worst teacher I've ever had. She is late to class 15 minutes every time and she doesn't respect her students. Her class is stupid and she will spent like 2 hours talking about one little short story. I hate this class!
ok she is unorganized and always late, but she gives out a semester calandar which states all the assignments, this makes it easy to follow and she doesnt give any test just reading quizes, and about 3 essays and a research paper, her class is not difficult but she isnt the best teacher either!
****!!!! Worst teacher ever. Who gave her a teaching credential? or even worse masters degree? This stupid teacher went to Columbia??? Were they blind and stupid?
This is the worst teacher ever!! I hope she reads these ratings and retire!! NOW!!!
Eggshells. When she's in a good mood, you can count on a fun, engaging class with positive and intelligent lecturing and good class feedback. When she's in a bad mood, be prepared for thinly-veiled annoyance, sarcasm, and vague, awkward dressings-down.
She's very unorganized and isn't sympathetic to students at all. One day when papers were due students were waiting for her to show up. After 1/2 an hour we went to her office to slip them under her door and discovered her there!
She is frustrated and vindictive and I think someone should explain to her that "cliche" doesn't mean anything with more than seven letters. She should read something all the way through before she reviews it. She needs to quit being so lazy and do her job and stop making excuses. Infuriating.
Horrible Teacher. Like everyone stated, she grades exremely hard on the papers. What does she think that we are in grad school with her at Columbia. Good lord, if this is the product of Columbia, we are all better of at Mesa. She is unclear into what makes an "A" paper. Take anyone else but ZoBell.
xobell-what a JOKE! she has no idea what she is talking about. she will test you on stories that she didnt even read, her spelling is horrible, and has not once been less than six minutes late. she gets lost in her own head and starts trailing off. don't take this class, you will not learn a thing!
WARNING!DO not take this class unless you want to hate life. She is disorganized, incompatent, always late and has mood swings. She is rude to all the students. She is the 1st professor I have ever filled a complaint to the dean about. ZoBell HOPE YOU GET FIRED!!!YOUR A WORTHLESS EXCUSS 4 A TEACHER!!!
Totally unhelpful. Totally unorganized. Totally forgetful and hard to communicate with. Totally snappy and short-tempered. Runs class in a strange manner that is neither helpful or interesting. Is not interested in students best-interests or is understanding. Not recommended.
a couple of other students and i actually reported her to the head of the english department one year because of her being late all the time, irresponsible, unorganized, mumbling, scattered thoughts, and random temper.this was 2 yrs ago when i took her class and it makes me sad that she still teaches
I think people misunderstand professor Zobell. She is ultimately a writer, and as such an artist. That means brace yourself for emotional storms and wild bursts of creativity. If you don't have a thin skin repair kit, find another teacher, but if you got the sack you can learn a lot from professor Z.
Like everyone writes, stay away from ZoBell. Has no interest in teaching students, but tons and tons of criticism. It is pretty sad that if she truly is a grad from Columbia, the best she can do is Mesa.I hope she reads this and helps stop the suffering of any student who is forced to take her class. Complain to the head of dept & maybe it will help
She is always late because she sits in her car smoking cigarettes and she is very rude to all the students. Her grading is inconsistent and she is highly disorganized. Terrible teacher.
Worst teacher ever. Never shows up on time, always 15minutes +. Take anyone but zobell if you want to learn!
i think she is really good. she IS always late though, but shes a good teacher.
****ing worst class ever, cant belive she is a teacher. worthless!!!!!

I agreed with you buddy, she's****, i dont know why lots of idiot read this and still go take her, she discouraged you, ****, she will treat you like****, always talk about her stores, not helpful, it was onli 2 people in the class got A, and few passed with a C,and the rest failed , I just wanna say to her if i had a chance,"**** YOU, ****"

She constipated my creativity. I left the class with an F on my transcript and didn't regret it.
Students you believe are not that with what energy and happiness I took this class. That was my first semester at Mesa college and came from English preapration classes. She misguide me and make me that much discourage that I forget and misup with my previous knowledge and she failed me by one number. So please be aware!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had no problems. If you do the work, you get the A. Student is hardworking and will work with you individually.
She's very nice. Great teacher
Unfortunately I agree with all the previous ratings. She is ALWAYS late, and I'm talking 15-20 minutes. Even though I thought she was nice, she's snaps at times and has weird mood swings. I believe she has her mind set on a grade she'll give you from the first paper you write, so it doesn't matter if you do a much better job you'll get same grad
Bonnie was a very pleasnt person to work with, her class was pretty easy. If you want to pass this class you need to make sure you do all the work. Overall great teacher.
she discourages students. she is not organized and will screw you if your paper isn't to her liking.
I absolutely love Bonnie. She teaches very comprehensively. In highschool I did not have any good english teachers, and FINALLY i found someone who knows grammar. She really does make class interesting. Although she is often tardy, she is always willing to stay after class to talk. Her criticism on assigned papers is extremely helpful.
This is the worst prof ever.
great class! easy going atmosphere, nothing stenuous. easy A. if you are interested in writing, you will learn a lot from her. The class was fun and non threatening. i would definitely take the other creative writing class that she offers. it's a great break from other classes.
Great class, lots of fun, relaxed atmosphere. Be prepare to write three no-fault stories (min 5 pages each, max 20, plus a revision of one) and homework. Beginners are made welcome. Do the required work and show up for class, and you should have a good grade to go with a better knowledge of creative writing. Bonnie is easy to get along with.
If you want to improve your writing in a positive learning environment, I recommend Professor Zobell's course, "Writing Fiction." There is positive peer reviews and excellent helpful commentary from the professor. The text provides interesting short stories which we write about and discuss in class although there are no typical exams.
good class. not too hard, but you need to do the work, which is a couple of fiction stories and reading. class inspired me to start submitting stories for publication.
Bonnie is a great teacher. Don't be fooled by any rating that says she grades you based on the quality of your writing. If you turn stuff in (that isn't plagarized) you'll get an A, easily. Her class was laid back and fun and mostly involved students helping each other with their writing. If you are interested in writing, I recommend this class.
Prof. Zobell utilized workshops to teach students to critique and to write creative fiction. She fostered an environment of honesty and respect among the students, while pushing us to think critically. She took the time to comment extensively on our sumibtted pieces, providing valuable feedback to the serious writers. I recommend here class.
Awesome class, awesome instructor. She knows her job very well.
I took Bonnie's class in the Spring, and thoroughly enjoyed her insights and comments. She made the environment for beginning writers supportive and encouraging. I would recommed her as a professor for anyone interested in writing!
One of the worst teachers i have ever had, she thinks that she is the smartest person to ever roam this earth. She believes that "google" is an internet browser and constantly argues with me about technical issues. She gives reading everyday and quizes everyday in classroom about the dumbest things and she will make you write tons of essays.
I took this class for Engl 43 and did learn from it but at times the class did seem boring and usless but you do learn from the activities but at times she makes no sense and is very nieve, she does get mad and is mean at times sometimes gives bad grades for weird reasons like oh you forgot a perod you get a D thast my opinion
super interesting class.very helpful advice and commentaries. easy class if you do your work! 3 short stories to write, few exercices to do, critiques to do. i loved this class
Very helpful class. Learn a lot from professor, but also from other students. You get a lot of advice. Do your homework and you'll do fine. 3 short stories, few excerices from book. A lot of readings but very interesting readings (stories from other students that you also have to critique)...VERY INTERESTING!!!
,The class consists on Take home paragraphs and Test paragraphs in class. I like how she grades papers but many classmates said she would grade them with C's or less. Just make your paragraphs interesting. We did board problems and read out of the book, but homework is due but she would just go over it rather than picking it up to see if you did it.
Loved her class! she pushes you to do your best, and she is always encouraging!
She's a great teacher. She encourages us 2 write, by making us write 3 stories in a semester. I never thought i could do it, but i did, and i'm thankful to Prof. Bonnie. She's very reliable, always reachable for questions. Her classroom style for teaching a Creative writing workshop is the best so far. And i've had 3 writing workshops. she's great!
Professor ZoBell was an amazing teacher. I graduated from UCSD in literature and her abilties exceeded many of the tenured professors I had there. She was really nice as well, and didn't seem too strict if people had issues with illness, attendance, etc. She was also really funny and let us be funny. Excellent teacher, excellent class.
Very good class for aspiring writers who REALLY want to know the honest truth of what others get out of their writing. Good critique style, and range of writing levels and genres. BZ was a good teacher. Kept things moving, and provided good feedback. Would def recommend if writing is something you're passionate about and you want a deadline.
Bonnie is awesome! I took her creative writing class years ago. She thoughtfully reads everyone's work. She pushes people to do their best, and she's also fair to weaker writers. She's well read and she's good to talk to about reading for writing. Overall, a wonderful human being and great teacher.
She's a really good teacher. I appreciated the time she took reading over my work and providing comments that encouraged and challenged me. She picked interesting stories, poems and plays and led good discussions that involved all of the students. She obviously really knows her subject, and is there because she wants to share her passion.
Not a bad class.
Ms. Zobell has developed an effective class format for new writers. Writing, reading and critiquing in workshop setting was stimulating and informative. She effectively taught fiction writing techniques by 1.readings from a great text, 2.writing assignments 3.discussions. She encouraged and inspired me in my writing attempts. She set a good example.
THIS PROFESSOR IS VERY TOUGH, HER GRADES ARE BASED ON YOUR ESSAYS. ASSIGNMENTS YOU DO IT IN CLASS TOGETHER BUT SHE COLLECTS THEM WHENEVER SHE WANTS. DONT ARGUE BACK BECAUSE ITS USELESS. BETTER OFF WITH A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR
Do not take this professor - she is scatterbrained and not at all college level quality. I got an A from her but I learned nothing. Oh, and her photograph is about 2 years old.
I truly hated this teacher. She was always 5 to 10 minutes late, and her breath always reeked of cigarettes no matter how much gum she chewed (loudly). However, it's easy to get a good grade in this class. She may be awful, but if you make sure to turn in ALL assignments ON TIME (no matter what), she generally gives good grades if you try hard.
She's also extremely unorganized & scatterbrained. She changes dates, forgets who & what she was talking about. She loses papers & it becomes very irritating to have to put up with her incompetence. Arguing with her is difficult. It's almost useless. She has very little extra credit or time outside of class to offer help.
I had here maybe eight years ago. Nice lady but to this day I think of dumb things she said and I want to ring her neck.
Bonnie is an excellent professor with a passion for helping others.Stern and to the point class excercises that have equiped me well for english 101.
This teacher knows her stuff, and is generous of her time. She reads double what any other creative writing teacher reads, is supportive, funny, and talented. If you want to learn how to write, she is someone you want in your corner.
Ms. ZoBell is one of the best English teachers I have ever had. She cares so much for her students and will help them in any way possible. Not many teachers truly care about their students but Bonnie sends emails, corrects every paper, and tries to connect with every student. Her class isn't hard, and makes every paper turn into an A paper if you as
I was terrified to be in this class after hearing everyone would read my work, but Bonnie made it more than comfortable. I had little interest in writing before, but I know if I dont pursue it, it will be a hobby FOREVER! I had a great time, learned so much, and would love to have Bonnie as a teacher again!
She's great! She gives really useful feedback on all work that is submitted. I took her class to become a better writer and her goal as a teacher for this class was to help me with that. Her guidelines for the class really made the class fun to be in. I felt comfortable sharing my writing with everyone.
Creative writing classes are always fun, if more work than you'd expect. But if you put in the effort on your short stories, you'll get a lot of feedback from the class and Bonnie. She makes thorough, detailed notes on each story, even if the draft is rough or incomplete. She has a lot of experience in creative writing, especially flash fiction.
Ms. ZoBell really is a fantastic professor. I understand, as does she, that English is not for everyone. But she always allows students to interpret the text and go off of what it means to them. For essays if you ask her she will help as much as she can. She really does care about her students and is open different thesis ideas.GREAT PROFESSOR!!
Great Teacher. I learned a ton of stuff from her. She really know a lot about writing and can help you become a great writer if you let her. Highly recommended. Always willing to help
For a teacher as strict as she is, she doesnt know how to show up on time. Shell arrive a few mins before the 20 min marker. Shell yell at students for not having the book, when theres days she doesnt have it either. She grades harsh! I wouldnt recommend her to any DSPS students!
Really fun class. However a lot of reading! But it's fun reading, since it was other students work. Really let's her students explore the plain of writing. She a little spacey, but really she makes the class really enjoyable. Took her twice and would take her again!
Ms. ZoBell is a really enjoyable teacher. She acts l ike she is going to be very difficult in the first week of class, but then she really loosens up. Shes just an older happy sort of ditzy hippy woman. Shes sweet. Her topics are fairly interesting.. Only 3 papers all semester, all are very easy. I highly recommend her.
5 Total essays, 2 in-class, 2 Persuasive, 1 Argumentative, 1 Research. Make sure you know your Work's Cited, she can be a real pain about it. Reading quiz for some easy points. No-shows a few times, but doesn't send the email till an hour or so before class. Conference days for every essay. Takes 15 minutes with you to go over your essay.
Worst teacher, tells you to fix this and then you get your paper back, then more you have to fix. Not a fair grader. Never to class on time. Makes it difficult to under stand.
bonnie is not a bad teacher especially for 43, its an easy class for crying out loud so for all those who were complaining about her probably were lazy and expected her to hand them their grade. do the work and you'll be fine! you do work out of the book, and essays, the tests are paragraphs, and she gives you week to prepare for the tests.
Shes a super easy teacher and really nice. Likes all of her students and tries to help everyone. She was absent alot which most students like but she would email ahead of time. EASY EASY EASY class. I recommend for anyone who wants an easy A.
She is an easy teacher but she gets confused a lot. Its like she lacks common sense and she will pick on people for no reason. She gets frustrated when asked many questions and gets mad when there aren't any to be asked! She absent a lot so if you want an easy A go with her. She does have like 5 essay quizzes that you must write in PEN
Bonnie is a great teacher. She is funny, and she sincerely wants to help you become a better writer. Highly recommend her English 253 class if you want to improve your writing skills
She begins overly strict, but begins to soften up after the first couple of weeks. If you spend more than an hour on papers, you will be rewarded. She writes fantastic notes regardless of how well you wrote your paper. If you have the ability to turn assignments in on time, you will do fine.
I wasn't all that interested in taking an english class, but Bonnie Zobell completely changed my mind, She is an outstanding teacher!! I am now completely into taking english classes. I think that, you just have to do what she asks and don't disturb the class and you'll be fine and get a good grade. I don't remember her ever being late?!LOVE HER!!!
If u want to become a better writer take Bonnie, she's honest and very helpful in her criticisms. If you don't like criticism don't take this class and don't be a writer, everything she says and teaches is to help u become a better writer. She's pretty funny too, so it's a fun class. She's an easy grader if u do the work, but writing isn't easy :)
This is a workshop: You read, write, and critique enough that your writing transforms within the semester. You write, and rewrite up to 100 pages. If you're serious about writing, then this class is for you--emphasizing serious. You'll maintain a journal and create a portfolio as well. Do the work, and you'll earn an 'A'.
Whether your goal is to be a professional writer or just want to write as a hobby any creative writing class with Professor ZoBell will help you hone your skill or bring clarity to a manuscript. Her classes are fun, engaging and easy on a writer's nerves. Good luck to you all.
Bonnie is an inspiring, articulate and knowledgeable professor who inspired me to continue writing.
Wonderful fun teacher! She's fun and good to work with. She knows how to highlight your writing's best features along with critiquing what needs improvement ^^
Wonderful experience. Great feedback. Never intimidating. Always helpful. She was great at sharing ideas on how to improve writing without being overly critical. She loves what she does and takes her class and her students seriously. Your writing can only improve if you take her class.
Professor ZoBell is great. I took her for Fiction Writing, and she's really an awesome critic and is super helpful with writing problems. She's all about getting the whole class involved in the discussions, which is great, and she loves what she does for sure. Take her if you get a chance!
Bonnie ZoBell is an extremely talented and inspirational professor. I have thoroughly enjoyed my educational experience as a beginner creative writer. The class environment is very welcoming and I learned so much that I'm taking the next course:intermediate creative writing. B. ZoBell is organized and her classes are challenging. Thanks Bonnie!
Bonnie runs this class as a workshop, with good use of the excellent text and student work to teach the art of fiction writing. Good for both the novice and more experienced writer, she encourages and challenges students to produce their best work. You will learn to critique fellow students' work, and really benefit from the feedback you receive.
Bonnie is a great teacher! If you're looking for some honest and helpful feedback on your fiction writing, I would highly reccomend this class. Great forum. Lots of reading and writing, but grading isn't too tough as long as you put in the effort.
I looked forward to coming to class every week. The environment is welcoming and encouraging, while the criticism is constructive and helpful. That can be hard in with a room full of writers. I was honestly blown away by how much I learned in this class, the textbook is terrific and Bonnie is smart, funny but also is very real and maintains control
Bonnie is an excellent instructor for fiction writing. I've taken many fiction writing courses before, and she gives the most comprehensive critiques of them all. Her criticisms will improve your writing and, at the very least, allow you to see another point of view that you hadn't previously considered. A tedious class, but one well-worth it
Zoebelle is unorganized when it comes to her schedule and returning papers. She mainly works on the textbook she requires you to buy for her class. Her lectures are really long and honestly boring. You could practically learn everything on your own. I received a B in the class just by participating and doing hw and going over material on my own.
It is clear that this fiction writing class is ZoBell's baby. Not only is she enormously helpful with her comments and advice, but she is also able to fine tune all of this to acutely fit the ambitions/abilities of each particular student--from the earliest of beginners, to those hoping to grow into serious fiction writers. Take this class!
great teacher very helpful
Very interesting and informative class. Professor Zobell is entertaining as well as very knowledgeable about fiction writing. I would definitely recommend the class to others.
first of all that's not her on the picture, but that's her name.she is very confusing is always late.she always looks angry and can be rude.she even ask students how to spell, where did she go to school?
Rarely prepared for class. Made notes last minute as everyone else talked, often repeating or not understanding what other people had said as a result. Overly dense on some issues which - given assumptions she is a competent reader - led me to believe she had not read stories with her full attention. Though definitely capable of helpful critique.
There are plenty of better teachers, she has missed many sessions and is late everyday because she "couldn't find parking". I would try your hardest to find another teacher. Not worth the time or money. Class is easy, but she isn't the nicest of teachers. Only take this class if your desperate.
Be clear in advance: Ms. ZoBell does NOT attempt to teach you to write the Great American Novel. She guides you through the elements of fiction, how they interlock, and how you can develop your individual style through using those elements in assignments that are then critiqued by the class. She's never pedantic, but does make you think a lot!
Bonnie is a great instructor! She creates an environment in which student discussion is encouraged, so that we learn not only from her expertise but from each other as well. She takes on the role of mentor throughout the class by encouraging each individual student. The class involves a lot of reading and writing but is definitely worth taking!
The class is set up like a writers workshop. You submit your original work (3 short stories parts of longer works) and get a critique from the class and Bonnie as well as an in-class discussion. Its a standard practice in writing, and surprisingly very helpful for learning the writing process or working out problem areas in your work.
Bonnie was very helpful and encouraging when reading students creative writing stories. She took the time to give lots of feedback and comments and gave suggestions on how to become a better writer. She cared about the students works and was respectful.
Good teacher but tough grader.
Professor Zobell is a somewhat of a tough grader and has a dry humor to her. Her class is straighforward no real surprises. You do have to worry about the test, but she lets you know what you need to work on to improve your writing. I can honestly say that I am a little better writer now than when I started.
One of the most useful writing classes I've taken. The book is vital, many readings augment lectures on tools for your own work. You'll have 3 pieces reviewed--be sure to leave thoughtful critiques, it'll encourage a more fruitful discussion environment. I found a direct correlation with the effort I put in and the constructive feedback I got back.
great teacher, easy class if you try.
Great structure: writers workshop Good textbook; definitely read the stories Started writing on the 1st class mtg Learned a lot from critiquing/ being critiqued by classmates She gives helpful written/ verbal feedback & facilitates effort and growth When she says its her turn to speak she means it I watched my writing improve within 1 semester
