Foreign. Hard to understand his board examples...he sometimes confuses himself.
Foreign - hard to understand his accent sometimes
This guy knew what he was doing and a good professor and was lenient.
Problem: he doesn't speak clear english and he expects everyone to understand
Has a thick Russian accent, but understandable. Very patient and helpful
thick russian accent. hard to understand. makes mistakes on board, confusing
understanding, helpful, and easy
very hard material, and very hard to understand him through the thick russian accent, and if you couldn't stand him saying is it clear 50 times a class then don't take him..he skips steps all the time
Very good, helps you alot!
Really nice guy, but I can't learn from him. Had to get a tutor. Very helpful, but he confuses himself while doing problems on the board. Not bad if you're good at math
If he makes a mistake on the board, you get a point on your next test. Lets just say he gives out a lot of points.
Though he makes a lot of mistakes on the board, the man knows what he's talking about and is really a nice guy. The class is hard because he preaches concept theory at length and quickly loses everyone's interest. His accent is troublesome as well.
It's a tough class, not for the faint of heart. True his accent is thick but he's more than willing to help you or find someone to help you outside of class.
He has a strong accent but you will began to understand him quickly. He is extremely nice and is more than willing to help. He knows what he's talking about and is very smart. He has a dry sense of humor
helpul guy but very hard to understand and stay focused in class. will work with you
Material isn't so easy. The textbook sucks. But, his accent isn't really that big of a deal if you pay attention and he's pretty nice.
Great professor I every had. Calculas class only he can make it easy. if he make mistake and you tell him he will give you +1 in next test. He knows what he is talking about.
Stay away from this professor! You will fail and you can't understand him! Spends have the period saying "Is it clear?"
By far the worst math teacher I've had at UNCC. The book was awful too. He'll write theorems and proofs on the board all day, but hardly go over any examples. When he does go over examples he skips half of the steps and expects you to figure it out.
Very helpful during class and through email. Gives extra points on tests for correcting him during class. Go to class and pay attention and you will do fine.
Would not reccommend
Skips a lot of steps, I would not recommend to anyone who lacks a STRONG math background
he sucks ya;ll. take teachers who speak english. Worst math teacher i have ever had.
Doesn't speak english well enough. "Is it clear?" is all he knows how to say. I had to drop class because I couldn't understand him. I highly adivse you avoid him at all costs
Hard to understand his accent. Nice man, tries to help you understand. Difficult material! he will give you a chance to improve your grade.
He explains things VERY clearly. The accent takes some getting used to, but I made one of the easiest A's I've made in his class. He also makes himself available if you need help and will give you a chance to explain your test mistakes after class if you think you deserve partial credit.
This guy was awesome! oh man he was hilarious. True, his accent was a little hard to get used to but it doesn't matter because for the first 2 weeks he does like 6th grade review anyway. If you need him to explain things that early, you shouldn't be taking the class anyway. Word of advice, don't ask him how to spell "HOUSE." He doesn't know...
Although his accent is somewhat hard to understand i really recommend this teacher. He has a good sense of humor & really tries to help everyone make an A. The study guides are exactly like the tests.
Gives you a point for every time you correct him in class. Has a limited vocabulary and speaks slowely, so he doesn't actually cover much material, which is a good thing, trust me. Calculus it self is not an easy A, but if you can get over the accent and SIT UP FRONT, he makes calculus seem like it can be a lot easier that it really is.
This class is extremely hard, but if you know how to memorize formulas you will get a good grade. He grades on a curve and 15 point scale. He will help you if you ask.
you may think at first impression that this class will be awful, but just stick it out. he has a funny accent, but can understand it after awhile. he gives a lot of hw and quizzes every wed, butttt he gives out a study guide b4 the test that pretty much IS the test! just go 2 class and pay attention and do hw, you will be fine!
I didnt do any hw and i'm going to pull a b. great teacher and understands what he is doing. hard to understand sometimes.
You can tell he wants to help, but skips lots of steps. Doesn't explain well just kind of starts doing examples. He does curve grades quite a bit but i'm still not going to get a C. Quizes count for more than a test. So DO GOOD ON THEM, or it's over :( Nice guy just not a good teacher.
Good teacher. Come to class, do the webworks and homework, and you should do fine. All exams were open note and open book, but you should still practice ahead of time. Webworks are essentially free points because you can try as many times as you need to get them right, and all together they count as much as the final exam.
he is a good teacher, material is very very hard!! he is not very good at answering the questions asked but he is very flexible with attendance and stuff. if you show him u work hard he'll give u a good grade. if you're NOT a math person DONOT take his class!!
He is so passionate about everyone doing well. Homework not collected which can be annoying but it's a BIG help to do it & correct in class just to see what you're doing wrong. Homework problems + his study guides make it easier to get through this class. Minimum effort can result in a C, which is very good considering it's Calculus....
He graduated from the University of Moscow and talks like he still lives there. And to make things worse he is terrible at explaining how to solve problems. Dont take his class
Pretty much the easiest person out there, even though his accent is sometimes incomprehensible. I didn't understand a single thing failed every exam and got an A in the class.
He is a very sweet person however, his accent is heavy and it is really hard to follow him at times. The only reason I have an A in the class is because I took the class in high school.
One of the best math professors at UNC Charlotte. He makes sure the students understand and explains each step clearly. Even if you have trouble understanding him (which I didn't) the logic behind what he does is easily understandable.
you can't understand anything he says, and he doesn't really answer any of your questions, he kind of just goes off randomly
AVOID AT ALL COST
I could not understand him because of the heavy accent he has. It was terrible
Yes he has an accent, but it's not too hard to understand him. He has a good sense of humor that most people don't seem to get but he is a great guy and tries his hardest to teach everybody. Weekly quizzes so attendance is important. Take this class, even if it's hard to learn from him you will like this guy.
THE WHOLE MATH DEPARTMENT IS IN TROUBLE, AND HE CONTRIBUTES, ACEENT NOT UNDERSTANDABLE, IF U HAVE PATIENCE TAKE HIM OTHERWISE DO NOT! MUST HAVE A BACKGROUND IN DERIVITES TO PASS
I've take calc twice now and I loved this professor! He thoroughly explained everything and always answers your questions. Yeah, he has an accent but if you take 2 extra seconds to listen you'll understand everything. besides, it's math people not english; give him a break.
Friendly and helpful, not a good teacher. Grading scale is easy (85 for A, 72 for B, 60 for C). The textbook is horrible. I had to consult notes and another textbook online. Gives practice problems (but no answers) before exams. If you study hard and read notes online, he is all right. But I won't recommend.
Strong accent, you get used to it. Weekly quizes, but only a small percent of grade. Takes attendance, does not grade HW, but keep up with HW for quizes and tests (he makes himself). Need 85 for an A in the class. Had a hard time in the beginning, used tutoring which helped a lot. Not the best at explaining, but still a good teacher. Got an A.
Yes his accent is strong, but it's PERFECTLY intelligible, just pay attention! Sit in front (he LOVES that). Do the HW, he doesn't check it but it will behoove you. He's very fair & will explain anything you ask him. I had min reqs with poor backround & still got an 87(an A in his class:).Tests are straight forward; he's not tryng to trick you.
He teaches mainly grad/PhD classes so every "example" he tries to give you is always over your head. His accent is quite strong, but I got used to it as the semester went on. Grading scale is easier, but the material is really hard. Textbook SUCKS. Tests rarely reflected what he taught. Final is insane. Don't take if you don't plan to work for a B
Teacher is nice and is relatively easy, but only to those who have taken calculus before. Sometimes students are not able to understand him. He knows the material, but has trouble explaining it. He also frequently made mistakes on problems in class which is confusing for students who do not know the material to begin with. Must rely on the book.
Has a heavy accent that you can understand after a while, but only does examples for notes, and uses a textbook that has examples that don't correspond to any of the homework. There is no TA so no extra class help and quizzes are heavily graded, and unless you have taken this class before/seen the material before, you WILL fail.
Boris is a little bit hard to understand at first, but you get used to his accent. He gives a TON of opportunities to succeed in his class. Honestly, if you do what you're supposed to as a student (go to class, do the homework, etc) then you will make an A. Study guides are almost the same as the tests. I got an A and I'm horrible at math.
I had been away from calc for a while, but even with sitting in the front of the class, I have no idea what half the words he said were. Very smart man and is willing to work with you so that you understand it, but I could not understand what he said unless we were talking one on one.
Professor Vainberg is hilarious. I would recommend taking him. As long as you do the practice test he gives you, the test will be easy. It is basically the same problems with different numbers. He accent is a little hard to understand sometimes. Show up for lectures and do the HW and you should be fine.
He is a very good professor! He really cares about the students which is rare. I was horrible in Math, Took his business Calc and made an A. Have a little patience AND DO THE HOMEWORK and you'll for sure pass. The Practice exams are AWESOME. Great guy.
Professor Vainberg was an excellent professor and I highly recommend taking him. I was very nervous about taking calculus, but I went to class each day and did the homework and was able to pass the class with a B. He goes out of his way to help his students and is passionate about teaching. One of the best professors at UNC-C!
Boris is a good, fair teacher once you get past his accent. His grading scale makes it a whole lot easier to make a good grade in the class. The quizzes can be challenging because there are only two questions on each one but the lowest two grades get dropped. He gives a sample test identical to the test with different numbers.
He gives sample tests that are EXACTLY like the actual test and goes over how to do every problem
YO BORIS YOU THE MAN.
Classes were a little boring, lots of material covered. Tests are easy if you work hard and understand what's going on. Quizzes are easy, drops lowest 2. You can make a 72% in the class & make a B as a final grade!
3 exams and a cumulative final, he'll drop the lowest exam score. Quiz every other class, 2 questions so study the homework. He'll tear cheaters a new arse if he catches them. Nice guy, funny, knows his stuff, but you may need a tutor. No easy A, but an 85 is an A, 71 is a B and 52 is a C.
Calc is hard but he made it passable. I got a C and that's what I was hoping to get. Sit near the front so you can hear him better. His methods of solving are easier than the text but if you miss class, get the notes from someone because the text might be harder to follow. Boris is a good professor.
Dr. Vainberg is a great Calculus teacher. Calculus is tough, there is no getting around that, but he makes it manageable. If you do all of the homework, come to all of the classes, and look for additional help when you need it you will do fine. I have actually declared a second major in Mathematics because of Dr. Vainberg. Very smart.
Ok. So he has a strong Russian accent and his voice is rather low and gruff. Sit near front to hear him, you will get used to the accent eventually. His grading scale is amazing. 52C If you go to class, pay attention, do the homework, and actually try, you should do fine. Calculus is a beast, but he has made it easy as possible.
Very heavy Russian accent that is difficult to understand. Quiz on second day. Gives zero time for students to buy books. Buy book before school starts! Uses odd techniques in his lectures.
It's calculus so no matter your prof you have to go to class and do hw in order to do well. Vainberg has an amazing grading scale (85-A, 72-B, 52-C). The study guides are pretty close to the test and there's weekly quizzes that are like the hw. He posts all the lectures in moodle and wants you to do well in class. Would take again
I withdrew due to bad grades. There is no Web Work in this class so you would not know what to study. Practice tests are nothing like the real test. One of the worst math teachers in my whole life. I would not recommend this professor. DO NOT TAKE EVER!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!
You will get fairly use to his accent. Quizes are only 2 questions, and test are typically around 10. If you correct him during class, you get a point, which is 10 points on your next quiz. He has his own grading scale A - 85, B - 72, C - 52 D - 45.
He has an accent. He assignments homework which is not for a grade but instead to help you understand him. He will have quizzes every week so do the homework. He also sends a practice exam before each exam it is recommended you do it because the exams are just alike
He does have an accent, but honestly, it's not hard to understand him. His practice test are very close to actual test, he's willing to help and answer questions if you ask. He can get ahead of himself sometimes during lecture and will skip steps, but he'll explain if you just raise your hand and ask. If you study, you should be fine.
literally the worst teacher ever do not take him if you want to understand what you're teacher is saying he has a very thick accent. when asked a question like why would you do this in a math problem he wouldn't understand the question. A 54 was a C which says ALOT about how awful of a teacher he is
15 point grading scale. Gives lots of homework, but it's never for a grade. Quiz and test heavy. He's Russian, and often struggles to explain concepts in a different way because he doesn't have the vocabulary to do so. He struggles to operate technology, so sometimes he spent half of the class trying to do so. Occasionally takes attendance.
This man can not teach to save his life. Very rude if you keep asking questions. Homework is on webwork. I suggest reading the textbook and getting a chegg account because this man can not teach anything!
Cannot understand a word he says and his handwriting is illegible.
Tests are pretty straightforward. Gives sample problems for tests that relate directly to them. Final was less than 15 questions (no multiple choice) but was VERY easy. Half the class passed with an A or B this semester. I bombed several quizzes and a test, but came out with a B. Anything is possible apparently.
He's okay. Two question quizzes are okay. Tests are okay. Nothing special. Better options out there.
Professor Vainberg gives you good opportunities to improve your grade. He drops the two worst quizzes (you get like 9 total) and the final can replace your worst grade. The sample problems are almost the exact same problems on the test. Came in not being too good at math but got an A in the class. Just have to study
He thoroughly explained all of the topics, but his exams were way too short. We literally had 2 exams that were 8 questions long. If you miss one question, that's automatically a B.
Hard to understand and couldn't use projector correctly so it was very hard to see board. Quizzes were once a week out of 10 pts, exams were 15 questions or less so be sure to study his sample test. Assigns easy non-graded hw but his tests were entirely different and very hard. Nice guy but you gotta work hard even with his 15 point grading scale.
So, the saving grace of this class is that an A is 85-100, B is 70-85, and C is 55-70. He has a thick Russian accent but his English is very good. Webwork for homework and usually one quiz per week. These will make or break your grade. He does practice tests, but only about 40% of those same problems end up on the tests. Super nice guy though.
So calc is hard anyways but if you do his practice exams they are really similar. I went to his office hours and he sat down with me until I got it. Pretty curved grading scale and drops two worst quizzes. If you go to class and pay attention you should be fine. He has an accident but it's not hard to understand.
Very hard to understand his English. Is a hard grader when it comes to quizzes. He always stands behind you while taken a test to make you nervous. Doesnt explain things to well.
He gives webwork based hw every week and it is easy to follow as long as you pay attention in class. His quizzes are given at the end of class so you do not have a ton of time to complete them but it is manageable, and the lowest two grades get dropped. His tests are very similar to the review he gives out which makes studying very straight forward
He has tests that have very few questions so if you mess up on one, your grade for that test might drop. Overall the tests were not that hard and its based on the homework you do. His lectures are long and he definitely has an accent but the homework can be done without watching his lectures. He uses a online textbook for tests, quizzes, and hw.
Do not take a math class with this professor; hes awful. He is scatterbrained, his accent is difficult to understand, his methods of teaching are overly-complicated, and his quizzes and tests are unfair. At the start of the semester, one of the first things he said was that the grading policy had been changed because of all the Fs last semester.
I liked Vainberg. I took him for business calc. Only thing I did not like is sometimes he would give pop quizzes. He is however very passionate about teaching and really wants everyone to understand calc. He is a little bit slow and out dated in his methods because he is very old but I thought he was funny and enjoyed him. (GRADING SCALE IS BOMB).
Professor Vainberg really cares about his students. He gives his lectures in real-time through pen and paper. At the beginning of the lecture, he would take some time to help with homework questions, so I recommend starting the homework early. The grading scale is great. You will use WebAssign which has many resources to help you with homework.
Clearly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Very quick to respond and willing to help and answer questions if you ask. Explains concepts well, sometimes a bit fast but slows down when asked Tests/quizzes follow study guide/homework online tests/quizzes but multiple attempts and easy questions balance not being graded on work shown.
Uses a modified 15-point grading scale that he tweaks by each year. Tests and Webwork make up a large portion of your grade. As long as you can do the homework you should be fine for the test. Ultimately, if you pay attention it's an easy class. I easily could have had an A if I put a little bit more work in. Probably the best calc 3 prof at UNCC.
Dr. Vainberg overall is a good professor. He is able to explain all of the concepts pretty clearly associated with the course. I would recommend going to class, as Calc 3 has a lot of content. I'm not a fan of Webwork but there is a modified 15 point system that helps "curve" grades. Try to keep up on the hw and study for tests and you'll be fine.
Do not take this man for your academic career. It is best to avoid him at all cost. I recommend the online version of all of your math classes at UNCC to make you be a better student. He is a good person but not for your transcripts.
Lectures are useless so you'll be learning everything yourself. I was not able to do homework from just his lectures. He takes attendance (not mandatory) but it kinda forces you attend. All test and quizzes are given on webwork which is a terrible system for tests. Main problem is he's too old to be teaching. Only good part is the grading scale.
Actually, I take a graduate course with him. Dr. Vainberg is a great professor. Although he has thick accent, you can understand what he means by reading his lecture notes. Sometimes, you have to put a lot of effort to self-study. But it can make you be better.
This class was manageable if you stay on top of the work. I liked using WebWork for tests and quizzes because you get your grade back immediately and multiple attempts. I disliked using it for homework because if you were stuck, it was hard to succeed. I appreciated that he would move back quizzes or homework if the class really needed it.
Great person, a lot of hw. And tests/quizzes are on webwork. The problems very often were difficult, but if you do the homework you got the class down.
Vainberg rewards people who cheat on the tests and tells people who work hard in the class to simply work harder if they do not understand. Every quiz, test, and hw assignment is on Webwork, alot of people just cheat on the tests when he's not looking and get the A but he does not care. If you work hard and try to understand, he will not help you.
The absolute worst professor I have ever had.
This guy was horrible at teaching Calc 3. For people who use different pronouns, he is horrible at that. He deadnamed me on emails for half the semester and never got my pronouns right. Along with that, his way of teaching is overcomplicated. It was to the point where I had to sit in on another professor's Calc 3 class to understand the concepts.
A good way to get by this class is by sticking close to the webworks, he only uses webworks for all exams and Homeworks, which isn't bad, however learning from the professor can be dreadful. I used another source to learn calculus 3 and most exams and Homeworks are copied verbatim. You will get by doing the homeworks and studying them for the exams
I made a RMP account just to give this guy a good rating. He is extremely caring and understanding. All tests are on webwork which is a mixed bag; good cause you get multiple attempts, bad cause you get zero partial credit. Practice tests are usually not like the actual test so be careful. Just keep up with all the webwork hws and you'll be golden
This class was harder than it needed to be. He relies to much on textbook reading to be lecturing with no planning. Consistently got problems wrong. He isn't trying to be bad, but calc 3 is 90% concepts and that's something he can't teach. Only passed from him easing up on the tests and changing the scale so he does care about his students.
Professor Vainberg's Calc 3 class can be challenging, but attending lectures and using resources like Unstuckstudy can help. Stay on top of the WebWork assignments and you'll do well. Overall, a decent class if you put in the effort.
Took Calc 3 with him twice. Both times were nothing short of incredible. His teaching style def is interesting but the homeworks and the tests are similar and he allows cheat sheets for the exams, (two for the final). Very caring and understanding about missing quizzes too. All round GOAT.
