He's pretty vague in lectures and grading, but fairly easy.
He is hard to understand and never ever helps you with problems and you can only miss 3 classes after that you can't get a B. Don't recomend him at all!!
Wonderful class. Very insightful and enjoyable. Flexible and easy to work with. Clearly the students that have rated him previously are fresh from high school and don't have a concept of what college classes and professors are like. Highly recomended.

I enjoyed his class for the most part, but the lectures were some times boreing. He seemed to be very fair though, but you probably won't want to miss many class periods for the sake of your grade.
Boyd was an awsome teacher i loved his class. I thought that he was very fair and willing to work with you. He really wants to see his students do well.
I have never done well in english until Boyd's class he seems to be genuinely interested in his students. He was a good teacher.
I didn't like how I didn't know what my grade was until the end of semester. However, I did get an A.
I loved this class. His service-learning program does take up a lot of time, but it is beneficial and lets you write your research paper on a topic that actually interests you. I found him to be very helpful and reasonable in his expectations. I would highly recommend him for this class.
I didn't learn what I hope to in this class. You had to do service projects in order to do your research paper. I found this hard to do since I'm a mother, work, and going to school. It was hard to squeaze in all this extra service.
This teacher didn't ever seem like he was prepared for his lectures. I didn't like the class at all and I didn't learn anything from it.
Don't take a class from him. He won't teach you anything that is worthwhile. He seems to teach a few vague things that apparently he finds interesting but the application and how they are supposed to help you is unclear.
It was a fun class.
He makes himself sound easy, he tries to fit in with the students and be cool but it doesn't work and makes you even more frustrated when he only gives you a check mark instead of the check plus (I really didn't like his grade contract,I think I got a lower grade becuase of it). try a different teacher if you can. the service learning was helpful.
Prof. Peterson was a pretty good professor. The class discussions went smoothly and were often pretty entertaining. He was respectful toward student comments and ideas. He isn't a terribly difficult grader, though he does look for originality in student essays so be prepared if you take a class from him.
he's a pretty good professor. you have to do a lot of work, and you also have to do service which is supposed to help you base your research paper. at first the class sounded hard, but in the end i got an A-. he does a grading system with check pluses and check minuses which was kinda cool, so you're guaranteed a B.
This professor was very hard to work with. He was very stubborn and wouldnt answer my questions. He was rude and wouldnt help the students. I would not suggest him to anyone.
He was a good Professor, made things clear. Required that we spend some hours volunteering, so a lot of out of class work. I would recommend him for people who are not going to school full time and working full time also.
Professor Petersen is a good guy. He was merciful when something went wrong for a presentation. He is willing to help you is knowledgeable. I did not like his "grading contract," I might have received a lower grade because of it - but everyone says that. You can't miss class, lower grade: annoying when it can't be helped. Lectures not so great.
this class has so much homework!
Boyd's class was amazing. I actually wanted to go to class- it was a miracle. I also felt like he really cared about his students.
I hate english, but Boyd is a good guy. His lectures are interesting and informative. You'll have to do a lot of research and 20 hours volunteer service. If you miss a day when you are giving a oral report or have a consultation, you will not get a good grade. Dont do the grading contract, it's good to know what you are getting before it too late.
Boyd is Hilarious! I like that we were able to joke around and feelings never got hurt!He really is merciful and can be understanding (But just like a parent, catch him in a good mood ;))
Boyd did a great job explaining the concepts that were to be used in our papers. He encourages class discussion. His 1 on 1 reviews with students are very helpful. My only complaint is the 20hrs of service you are required to complete. As a full time student who works I found that to be an extreme for an English class.
He was charming and funny. He somehow was able to make writing a research paper enjoyable even though it was a very demanding class.
Way Laid back and funny, but still a good teacher without tons of homework... does require quite a bit of reading though
I wouldn't recommend him. There's other teachers which are better at teaching how to write argumentative papers and don't make you write pointless side papers. He also makes you volunteer 20 hours of service and makes it so you have to bother your service supervisor over and over again for interviews and evaluations. Take from someone else.
Professor Peterson is fantastic! He is really funny, and he teaches well. One thing he does is that when you turn in papers, you do it in a private meeting with him, and he grades it in front of you. It can be nerve racking, but you get your grade back ASAP and he usually doesn't grade you very hard. Sign up for him at all costs!
I had a difficult time with this class as I'm majoring in something totally different. Professor Petersen has you read many different books, had a take-home test, and a couple of other reports. It was just hard for me as I wasn't majoring in this class so I wasn't prepared on how he wanted the papers written.
He Uses his book a lot!!!! i have a version a year older then the one he recommends and i had a hard time finding the correct reading material. BUT! he teaches extremely well!!! i am very impressed with how he connects to his students; make sure you introduce yourself to him before hand or he will not remember your name. (don't feel bad if he doesn
Right. This man is THE WORST English teacher I have ever had. He is a Service-Learning instructor, so be wary of that (20 hours of service). The entire class is focussed on it, so prepare to write EVERY paper on your service-related topic. Worst of all, HE DOES NOT TEACH YOU A THING and still expects excellence. He likes the book to teach for him.
I couldn't connect to him on any level. He picked favorites and wouldn't give others a chance. Doesn't seem to understand the meaning of "I have no time!". He was pretty funny but his homework was useless. Wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
He gave us TOO MANY writing assignments throughout the semester. He teaches NOTHING, is RUDE, and is ALWAYS LATE to class every morning even though he takes roll every class. I got a B+ but this is something that I worked on as best as I can.
He teaches well. I found everything that he explained easy to understand. His grading was fair. If you show up to class and follow instructions, you'll find that it's not hard to do well in his class. He was pretty humorous, too.
I found this class far too easy for it being a three thousand level class and, thus, reached a point during the semester where it became frustrating to motivate myself to go to class.
Amen to everything the person below me said. Also, this class (as Professor Petersen teaches it) is misnamed. The entire class is on how we use the Adam and Eve story to define gender roles. It does not go beyond this one story. So one may find it frustrating if one starts with any expectation of a list of readings from broad religious spectra.
I HATE this teacher. He swears randomly to be funny. He brags about how smart he is. His assignments are useless-7-10 papers. It's service learning, be prepared to waste 20 hours of your life. The only good thing is the grade contract- as long as you go(only 3 absences allowed)you'll get at least a B. Avoid him at all costs!
That comment about him being a horrible teacher because he makes you sign up to do community service? It's been 4 years since i took this prof's class and I still think about it because I learned such important things for my own life. He does make youdo service which was an awesome experience for me. Great teacher if you let him be.
This professor is THE BEST ENGLISH PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. Professor Peterson removes the subjectivity from English. He teaches critical thinking which is rare even on a college campus. I would definitely recommend Professor Peterson to anyone as long as you are willing to work to get a good grade. Thanks for helping me not hate English!!
Hands down the best teacher I've had at UVU. Very knowledgeable yet articulates key points in a fun and clear manner. As a fair grader and a student's teacher, no one should graduate from UVU without taking at least one of Dr. Petersen's enjoyable classes.
Wasn't the easiest teacher, but it IS possible to get a good grade! You just need to put in the time to review the material before quizzes and tests. Also, for the final he used A LOT of questions from the midterm. So review that well! Over all he taught the material pretty unbiasedly which I appreciated. A good teacher, but he makes you work.
I thought he was a very knowledgeable guy but his class was really boring. I had more busy work type of homework than I have ever had. This class will take a lot of your time, but if you work hard and do all of the assignments he promises you at least a B.
Professor Petersen was great. There is a lot of reading and the textbook consists of three different books. You discuss all readings in class so that really helps with understanding the harder poetry. Tests and quizzes are easy if you have done the reading. He is pretty lenient on his grading as well.
Peterson is a really nice guy. You're pretty safe with him; if you do decent work, you'll get a decent grade. He just doesn't bring much to the table as far as teaching style. You'll cover the material, you'll get a feel for the periods, and that's about it. He does have a tendency toward busywork, and his readings are inconsistent in difficulty.
Terrible teacher. He spends the whole semester talking about service learning and a research project you'll do on it. He helps with nothing and nit-picks your grammar in one-on-one meetings. I recommend *against* taking this class from this teacher.
He isn't very personable but pretty easy class, just show up and do the work and you'll be just fine. He is kind of mean, but one of my easiest english teachers! You do have to do community service for his class, and the whole class (papers, assignments, etc.) are based on the community service.
He give two grading styles to choose from at the beginning of the semester. we picked the one where if you do all of the work and turn it in on time you're guaranteed at least a B, but he's very picky. He turned down several of my service ideas saying that they weren't good enough and made me re-do papers numerous times. i would not recommend him.
his class was organized with due dates and assignments. he is really clear about what he wants so it's hard to not know what to do. his lectures can be boring and he normally fills up each class period. requires service hours, but not terrible. would recommend to anyone who wants a pretty basic english class that's willing to put in an avg effort
Boyd Petersen is terrible. I thought he was really nice and funny in the beginning, until he started having consultations. He had me do every single paper and gave me "advice" on how to change it, and everytime I changed it to what he said he would say "this isnt what im looking for" i would NEVER take him again. Also his grading contract is a scam
The whole class is based on the service you do. Pretty basic class. Feel like I didn't necessarily learn how to improve my writing skills. As long as you do the work you should be fine.
I would never take this class from him if I new how the semester was going to be. You can only miss 3 classes in the semester or you cant get a B in the class. Classes are pointless and he makes you do so much more work compared to the other ENGL 2010 classes.
Terrible!!! You can only miss 3 classes! I had to miss some for work and when I tried to get due dates from him over email he responded in a "you should of been in class" type manner. He's not a technology guy so if you didn't hear information in class, your done. You weren't going to find it online and he wouldn't tell you through email. WORST!!!
Lacks professionalism. too easy if you want a B. If you want or need an A, be prepared for the most stressful class of your life. Professor Petersen seems to find some kind of vindictive joy out of making the students who care feel insecure and downright helpless. And his excuse is it motivates his students. Take his classes just to pass. Or Avoid
Dr. Petersen is a great guy. I got to know him really well during the semester, and he is super nice and really challenged me to do my best. He brings a lot of writing and English experience to the table; really knows his stuff, but has a great sense of humor. Give great feedback and is concerned about you and your grade. Lots of writing!
Hes a nice professor, easy-ish.
I hated english in High School and came to enjoy it for once with Professor Petersen. He's very approachable and will explain more if you just ask. Sometimes it's not clear when he teaches but his quizzes and assignments aren't hard if you just do what is asked. He's funny and not very strict.
He may be the worst english teacher that I have ever taken. He used busy work and "consultations" as an excuse to not teach. He doesn't answer questions very well and will just tell you to pay attention more or to "read the book". He is very unclear on what he wants on assignments. He made 22/26 peoples redo a paper... DO NOT TAKE
Boyd is a little boring, but as long as you show up and apear to be interested, you should totally be ok in his class. He grades pretty leniently, but he does give pop quizzes on the reading.
I absolutely loved Petersen and his critical theory class. He is approachable, funny, and very devoted to his profession. LOTS of reading and daily lectures, but the critical discussions were the best! He assigns amazing texts and give excellent prompts and discussion questions. He makes you work for your grade, which is how I like it. Recommended!
I always felt like I was learning. He pushed me to be a better writer.
I LOVED this class! I was little worried that it would be a drag but Boyd really knows his stuff and he's passionate about it, so it makes it all the more interesting! Seriously wish I could take this again!
This class was great. Professor Petersen is a great teacher and is very knowledgeable. I loved the syllabus. All of the assignments we did throughout the semester were to prepare us for our final project. It made writing the final research paper much easier. It is a lot of work, but it is not too difficult if you stay on top of your assigments
If you want to take a 2010 English class do not take him. This class was way harder than other English 2010 classes. Way too many essays on the same topic. But if you like writing take it. By the way there are 3 finals at the end of this class be prepared.
He requires 20 hours of service from an established agency. The only problem is an agency requires a commitment of sometimes 3 months, but mostly 6 months or 1 year. Great guy and very knowledgeable. But, if you are a working student his class will be impossible to complete. Nothing against service, its just too much on top of a job.
Dr. Petersen was great to take classes from he definitely helped me remember I do enjoy writing. He has quizzes on the reading assignments, make sure to read thoroughly because they can be difficult.
Awesome professor! He takes a whole week to have consultations for your essays with the class 1 on 1 for about 15 minutes. Gives great feedback! Honestly one of my favorite English professors I've ever had. Also pretty funny corny jokes so he keeps class interesting.
You'll be fine if you can devote your life to this class for the semester, if you're working and/or taking a full load it just won't work. I wouldn't really consider this an English class, there is way more than that going on, you'll learn more about how to do papers long and fast but not well.
Be ready to do service and write a bunch of papers on it. He does not do a very good job explaining what he wants and class has nothing to do with the papers, but is mandatory.
Dr. Petersen helped me to become a better writer. Very knowledgeable, and this guy is hilarious! Loved the class!
He's a really chill guy and works with you if you have problems or conflicts you just have to tell him before hand. He has you write a bunch of 2-3 page papers throughout the semester to help you build up to writing a 10 page paper at the end of the semester. Don't show up to class and he takes points off.
Prof. Petersen is one of my favorite prof. I've ever had. He is awesome at giving you feedback while also giving you freedom to write what you want. You write a lot of 2-3 page papers, but if you actually put time into them and make them quality papers it makes the final paper A LOT easier. Twenty service hours were required to pass.
He has a passion for and an extensive knowledge of the subject material and his enthusiasm is contagious. He makes the subject interesting. The reason I only rated 3 is because he is a VERY tough grader with an EXTREME attendance policy. Half the test grades rely on matching authors to random lines from their works. Heavy memorization, pop quizzes.
He is vulgar and immature. Don't waste your money buying textbooks, he goes off slides he makes and you have to copy down everything the slide says in order to learn test info. Also, no electronics allowed without special permission, so you have to write 3-5 pages of notes every class. He is a terrible teacher.
You literally won't pass if you skip class, attendance is an important factor in your final grade. But he is always willing to help, and does a lot of one on one consultations instead of class.
In some ways this class was an "easy A" but I didn't learn as much as I would've liked. Several times, 3 consecutive days of class were canceled for "consultations" where you would go in on 1 of the 3 days and discuss your paper with him for about 5 minutes. Some liked it but I didn't like my tuition going towards a class canceled 50% of the time.
Honestly the best professor Ive had. Very caring and willing to work with you if you put in the effort. I missed a little over 3 weeks of class due to surgery. He was very understanding of my situation and helped me catch up to finish the coarse without having to take an incomplete or withdrawal. Highly recommend!
Has very good lectures but there is a lot of out of class work and the work is not always clear
Boyd spends so much of class time going on tangents. I took his Brit Lit course, and our class met for 50-minutes 3 times a week, but I honestly can't say I learned anything from the class. If you actually want to learn about British Literature, and not hear some professor rant about his divorce horror stories, don't take literature from him.
Forces you to be in class and then doesnt go over lectures. If you do have his class prepare for working hours out side of class to do 20 hours of community service.
My experience in his class was mediocre at best. I didn't hate it, but I can't say I learned much. You read a ton outside of class and he barely goes over any of it. The exams are hard and he assigns papers without much of an explanation of his expectations. It's not an impossible class, but I would definitely take from someone else if possible.
The class was based primarily on readings from the textbooks and discussions in class. If you show up and do the reading, youll probably pass Engl2620.
Honestly this was the worst class I have ever taken. I felt largely as though he didn't care about us as students, and most certainly didn't care about the subject matter. The service learning experience (20 hours of service for a recognized institution) was just a ton of work to get done, plus all the papers to be written on the subject. Terrible.
Worst class Ive ever taken. I didnt learn anything about ENG in his class. In class assignments had weird content. He also never replies to emails like a professor should & his grade contract is awful. You never know what your grade is.
The assignments for the week were given multiple times on Friday night and were due on Sunday. It was frustrating to balance my other classes, work, and this class when I was given my assignments late in the week. He also did not add any of our assignments into our final grade until the last day of the semester.
I really liked him as a person, I just did not like how his online class was set up. He posted modules weekly, and I like to see assignments on the Canvas calendar. A lot of quizzes and discussions were not shown to have a due date, but they closed after certain days. It was hard to keep up with and I was very confused at times.
By far the worst teacher I have taken from. The assignments are very vague & do not appear on canvas to do. Unresponsive teacher to emails & does not give feedback. Its the last day of the semester and he still has yet to grade the majority of the assignments. DO NOT TAKE FROM HIM!! Not worth your time or money.
Awesome professor and really great lectures. Really enjoyed this class. Textbooks are EXPENSIVE for this class, but you can find all the texts on pdfs online, so buying the book isn't really worth it. Never opened mine. 3 (3 page) papers and 3 tests (multiple choice) throughout the semester and that's about it. Super easy. Definitely recommend Boyd
He is always late to class, he posts things on canvas late, the class is very unorganized and the assignments dont teach anything. Major waste of time and money.
This was unlike any other English class I have taken - and not in a good way. He is a great person, but everything was disorganized and unclear. I never skip classes, but I did here. The material had nothing to do with English. We went over everything (conspiracies, etc.) but the semester project until the last week of class -when it's due.
This was the most ridiculous and unorganized classroom experience I've ever had. He frequently went off on tangents and wasted class time talking about his ex-wife. Because of this a lot of course material was glossed over and his tests questions are based on single lines from the text so you need to have everything memorized to get a good grade.
He was very strict about is grading and he was very vague about explaining all of his assignments which made it hard to complete. He showed up late regularly and during class, he talked about topics irrelevant to the topic.
Comes late, goes late, doesn't know what work he gives you, and expects you to memorize LOTS but doesn't cover it. Get a different professor. Failed to get us a book list, then asked us to get and read a book in two days. He also tested on that book for the rest of the semester. Copies SparkNotes quizzes. No thinking is needed.
He was extremely caring and understanding. That being said, he had no concrete due dates for things until they passed and was not clear on his expectations for several assignments. As a person I really liked him but as a professor he was very frustrating.
Great guy, very flexible. His assignments are unclear and he has no idea how to work Canvas. If you love to write a bunch of useless things, your in for a treat. He is unclear with deadlines.
Uses very old and out-of-date methods that conflict with students' evolving learning.
Prof. Petersen was a pretty good english professor. His lectures were informative and he kept them interesting and funny. We had one-on-one consultations with him every few weeks, which allowed him to give us a lot of helpful feedback.
Petersen does not know how to use canvas. He's unclear with deadlines. He's vague about his expectations, especially with group projects. He requires 20 hours of community service for a lower-level English course. I wish there was an alternative assignment available that wasn't so time consuming and unrelated to English as a subject.
Boyd is an AMAZING professor. He is very kind. This is not just an English class. He teaches about concepts that pertain to critical thinking, such as cognitive dissonance, the backfire effect, changing one's mind, contemporary politics, among others. Too many students let their own politics get in the way. Don't be one of them. Take his class.
