Even if you're not interested in art, he makes this class very fascinating. Provides you with everything you need to prepare for the tests, and you'll discuss very interesting topics. Great guy and fun to listen to! :)
this class is sort of boring but collins makes it as interesting as it could be. one of the better art history professors. he helps you prepare for tests.
Dr. Collins is a great professor. The class can get kind of boring, and the tests are essay-like format, no m.c. He makes the art through history seem really interesting. There are 3 tests and no cumilative final exam. He takes attendance. It is a neat class, but you have to work hard for tests.
Professor Collins is AMAZING! I already had wanted to take this class (even though I'm not an art major/minor) but after taking it I wanted to take more art classes just so I could have him as a professor. He's is passionate, funny, and well-spoken. And the icing on the cake: he's a liberal!! :*)
Really interesting professor, really laid back but always informative in lectures, if you have a problem he'll go back and try to be clearer about what you don't understand, you gotta work for a good grade on his tests but he accomodates you with everything you need beforehand, several times over.
This guy is awsome. He makes class really interesting because he himself is pretty crazy and fun to pay attention to. Test are hard, only if you dont study. He provides u with everything you need to know. Just make notecards. As long as you put in some effort, you will have no problem at all.
The class is boring, but he does a great job of keeping you entertained. The tests are hard if you don't study. He gives you everything you need to know. If you have a good memory, and take great notes, you will do great in this class.
makes modern art fun
Great professor. Essay life format on the test, but if you pay attention in class the test are easy. I enjoyed this class. Collins is a great professor!!!
Very knowledgeable and easy to understand. Always willing to help. Tests have the same format (vocab, identifying pictures). Show up for class, study a little bit at a time, and you'll do fine.
Good Professor. Wants you to do good. Write down what he tells you and you will have no problems on the test. Excellent review prior to test. Tries to make a dry material interesting. Definitly recommended.
Really awesome professor. Very knowledgeable and engaging. If you have the chance to take a class with him, DO IT!
such a great guy and sexy as hell!
An incredible teacher! This was my first art history course, and he was clear and interesting (very hot) - made me consider changing my major just to have more classes with him. Never missed his class because I didn't want to.
This is the second ARTH class I've taken with Brad, and I truly feel that he is just amazing at what he does. His enthusiasm and knowledge are so inspiring that you'll never want to miss a class. And I'll have to agree with the other poster...he is damn sexy, indeed. Difficult not to do well!
hot AND nice AND easy. does it GET any better?
This prof. is a lot of fun. I would definately recomend him. He is knowledgeable and makes class interresting. It's not difficult. He lets you know what you need to study, and you feel like you know the material just by going to lectures. Take any of his classes if you can.
I hated the class, stayed only to sign the attendance sheet and then left, went to the reviews, got 85% on my tests and got a B overall. The teacher is a good guy, but expects alot of minute details on the exams which sucks, lots to memorize.
Absolutely loved his class. I never really cared about art before, but the way he explains what things symbolize and the form and everything about a painting was actually interesting. I learned a ton. He's a great teacher. Grades fair. Good sense of humor. Just pay attention and study a little. Really cool guy. Take this class.
He is a great teacher to get you interested in art. Go to class and take notes and you'll do fine on the tests-make flashcards!
One of my favorite teachers ever! He does require you to remember material for the exams (duh!) He makes it very easy to learn the material - just listen in class, he points out exactly what will be on the exam! But please don't ask him - technically he can't tell you!!!!
He's a great teacher. Maybe my fav. so far. Just come to class. he explains each of the slides. Make sure you know spelling! it counts on the exams as well.
Dr. Collins is the best art history teacher I have had so far in college. He explains each of the slides thoroughly and makes sure he lets you know which slides you have to know for the exams. He also conducts review sessions before each of the exams, which are very informative.
wonderful teacher. the class was very interesting. i highly recommend him.
Really funny guy and he explains the slides so you always know what to expect. Three tests and 2 one to two page papers. No required reading.
I love this man. If you come to class and take notes and study them, you will do fine. He had links to all of the images on blackboard and I printed them out and put them on notecards to learn them for the test. Three tests, final is just another test, a paper, and no required reading. Plus he's hilarious and knows what he is talking about!
The class itself I found a bit monotonous, but you can't doubt his enthusiasm, surely. A nice guy, a solid professor, go to class, study a little, and you should do fine.
He is very passionate about art and tries to make things as clear as possible for the students. This course does require a lot of memorization, but not a hard class to get an A in.
Easy, two papers, three tests, I barely came to class had my sister or someone else sign me in. three hundred people in my class so no one really could tell you weren't there. TA's don't give a ****. SO I didn't either, just had to memorize art for the tests. Came out with an A.
It wasn't interesting, but it was easy.... funny sometimes though. Better than the other profs for this class that I heard about. Understands that most students who take the class don't care about arts
Dr. Collins is a nice guy. Show up, take notes, and you'll get an easy A.
Tests are you pull out a piece of paper & describe & critique 9 images from the notes he takes in class and write definitions. Can be easy A (I got one), but requires good notes & LOTS of memorization. Only bad thing is he takes attendance & has attendance policy, but get someone to sign for you, & he cancels class alot anyway. Funny & cool prof.
I wasn't really looking forward to having to take an art class, but it was great. Dr Collins presents the material in a way that becomes relevant to any field. His lectures are pretty entertaining too.
this was a great class
Funny guy. Show up, take decent notes. He tells you what to study and if you take the time to memorize the information it is an easy A.
I love Dr. Collins' lecture style. I think that even if the topic were dull(and it wasn't), he would have made it interesting with his obvious interest in the subject and dramatic style.
Probably one of the best AH resources USC has to offer. Knows his stuff, has strong opinions and welcomes challenging opinions. A MUST for AH hopefuls.
Dr. Collins is a great art history teacher, especially if you've never taken an art history class before. He makes even dry subjects really interesting, he's enthusiastic and fair. As long as you take notes and come to class, you're good.
He's got a really good personality and is really funny. He really tries to help you as much as you can. His TA's are on a high horse so they like to make you seem stupid but they still grade semi-fairly. Show up to class take good notes and you'll be fine.
Made the topic as interesting as possible, tells you exactly what you need to know. Overall a great teacher
He is truly a great teacher
His class was fun. For an art class, he was amusing. He basically tells you everything you need to know about each painting. Just make flash cards of the paintings with all the information and you should do fine.
Great! He focuses on why the works of art are historically important("what is the function?!") instead on just having his students memorize dates & names.
very funny. made me more interested in art history. he knew his material very well. very important to go to class because there is so much material. if you study your notes some and pay attention in class you will be fine. this is a class where you will only get out what you put into it
Dr Collins is amazing....and so damn sexy! I'd want to take all of his classes.
Dr Collins is amazing....and so damn sexy! I'd want to take all of his classes.
Took as a freshman and I thought some of the quizzes on the reading was hard so I went to him and talked to him about it-he was very nice and told me not to worry about it. He helps out students if he sees they are trying. Attendence is taken every day but it is a very fun class to attend! Study the paintings with notecards and read the assignments
Easy class.. room is dark because he uses slides so if you tend to be sleepy be careful about when you take this! When I was awake though (haha) the content was pretty interesting and he is very enthusiastic about it. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT EVERY TIME! Study for the tests with note cards listing info on one side, pic on the other and tests are a cinch
Best professor I've ever had, ever! The guy is hilarious and a sharp dresser. Very easy to understand and will answer any questions you might have. You don't necessarily need the textbook if you just look up all the pictures online. I didn't use the textbook at all.
The love I have for this man knows no bounds. Easily one of the best professors you will ever take. Go to class, pay attention, and make sure you're prepared on test day. His lectures are really interesting, though, and it's easy to pay attention.
This dude acts like he's laid back and cool but don't be fooled by his hip demeanor. The tests involve identifying paintings and I would get artist/name/date correct but still get a crappy grade because I "didn't say enough." The book was completely useless, we never used it. And everyone in his class has bad haircuts and smells like an ashtray.
Good teacher. Really easy class. Come to class and you should do fine. Really easy midterm and final.
Awesome class, really knows how to make a boring class interesting. Can get boring at sometimes and there was a writing assignment but really easy. The test material is really easy to study and the class overall is easy as long as you pay attention and take notes and go the review sessions
Dropped out of this class after 2 days. Definitely a smart guy, funny, knows his stuff, but I would not recommend taking his class (or at least this one) if you are not an art major. I was lost 30 minutes in, even though I asked questions. However, if you are an art major or have a passion for art, take his class! He's very smart and passionate.
I loved him. He's very personable and knowledgeable. I think he's perfect if it's your first Arth class because his tests are very straightforward. The material is so interesting, or maybe he just makes it so. He inspires. He makes a large class feel intimate because he doesn't just lecture, he entertains. Great experience!!
great professor. i have taken 3 of his classes, and he has great lectures. no surprises. test easy. based on lectures. if you don't attend class you may miss some stuff, but classmates usually good at helping out.
Dr. Collins is AWESOME!! If you're looking for a fine arts credit you should take this class. He makes you learn the useful facts about each work. The exams are all from memorization and written. Some vocab but he makes it clear what you need to know for each exam. some trips to the local museum are required but does not detract from course!
He is awesome. His class is super interesting and he is hilarious. Really nice guy and very helpful for whatever you need. Very laid back. He doesnt take attendance, but if you dont go to class you will be lost. I love his classes
No book, easy class, and professor collins is very nice, laid back and extremely funny. My problem, however, wasn't with him; it was his T.A.'s they don't grade fairly, never following the same criteria. They also took off points for the craziest things. Don't be afraid to dispute your grade, it may come down to it. BEST CLASS FOR AN EASY A
Took this class as a supplement for anthropology. Not sure what they want, but there is definitely a high degree of inconsistency in how the TAs grade. One of the hardest classes I took here. Will be a difficult course if you're nearsighted.
I just transferred to Winthrop this year, but highly considered staying at USC just to be able to take Collins' class again. I have always liked art, but found many sections of art history incredibly dull until I took his class. Endlessly intelligent and very easy to follow. And he's a total babe.
Best professor at USC. He will inspire you. Tests are hard, but you just have to memorize. Attendance is not required but you have to go to every class to do well. I chose to become an art minor after taking him. His classes are intersting and fun. TAKE HIM!!
This course made me change my major to art. I never realized WHY art was so valuable. One of the best classes I've ever taken. One of the few that you were sorry when it was time to go home.
Great in lecture. Captivating
Arguably one of the best professors at USC. His lectures are captivating and interesting. He loves the subject and gets his students interested as well. There is a fair amount of memorization, but the subject is enjoyable so the work load is very tolerable. I will try to take more of his classes, even though I don't have to. Take his classes!
GREAT CLASS! Very easy, interesting lecture, exciting professor. 2 tests, one final (not cumulative). 5 easy quizzes (one point each) on readings that he tells you about ahead of time. You can just go to the review the class before the test if you don't want to go to class, but if you are interested in the information, class is really helpful!
Awesome dude, really passionate with the subject, gets you into it.
The only great professor I've had since I've been at USC. He's really funny and loves the subject and makes you love it too. There are 2 tests where you basically write as much as you can remember from what he said about an art piece. The final isn't cumulative and just counts as a third test. Easiest and funnes class I've taken.
Collins is not only the most knowledgeable art history teacher I've ever had, but he is the only one who has fully captured my interest. TAKE THIS CLASS. you will be fully prepared for EVERY test. 3 tests (painting ID, terms). 100 word write-up of an artwork (3). He and his teaching assistants are available. Facebook study groups are VERY helpful.
Sooo interesting. Would be great on TV!
Probably one of the best lecturers to have lived. Ever. He's a pretty funny guy and he makes class incredibly interesting. Attendance wasn't even mandatory but I only missed one class because I actually looked forward to it. For every test, he tells you in advance all the paintings/terms you need to know, so it's really not too hard.
Best teacher you'll ever have. makes you interested in things you have never heard of before. truly gifted teacher with exceptional knowledge of the subject. if you are interested in art history he is MUST
Dr. Collins is one of the few professors at this University that restores my faith in higher education. He is incredibly laid back and funny; his class is easy if you take notes/show up/and memorize the material prior to test time. I had no interest in Art History before I met Dr. Collins but now it is my minor---take his class. He is amazing.
Collins is one of the best professors I have ever had at USC. It was such a pleasure to be in this class and be taught by this awesome professor. His class is very enjoyable, thought provoking, fun and interesting! Everyone has to take one of his classes at some point at USC!
This man is hilarious and a great teacher. He is brilliant and interesting to listen to. I did not care about art history one bit and still found his class stimulating and enjoyable. I strongly recommend taking him.
His teaching is one of the best, clear, and well taught. Although it's an easy class, I learn a lot! His exams are based on his lectures, so go to class! His lessons are easy to understand, you just have to pay attention and right down what he said. If you do so, you'll get an easy A.
This class is sooooo boring. In class quizzes are really easy. Gives you the topic and question previous to class. His exams follow everything he talks about in class so go. If you pay attention and memorize everything about the paintings you'll do fine. Don't take this class unless required.
A good lecturer, but not a good teacher. The TA's rule the roost, and grade inconsistantly because they do not know the information. He does not make time for his students. Seems like a sweet gig--talk for an hour, collect a check, someone else does all the work, and who cares if its wrong or right.
If you pay attention, youll do fine. Its also not hard to pay attention, because although he lectures alot, he'll throw in a few funny jokes every now and then. I also realized that if you have any interest in history, AT ALL, take the class. Youll learn alot about history, and the art is interesting as well
Truly, the TAs are the downfall of this class. Collins is absolutely awesome. Fun to talk to, really helpful, lectures are great. But the TAs grade everything, and they do it inconsistently, poorly, and unreliably. I'm talking nearly identical answers getting 7/10 from one TA and 10/10 from another.
Knowledgable but not an educator. Minor celebrity in his field = inflated self worth. Unreachable out of class (does not email). Lecture is all generalizations. Rude to students. TA is underprepared (understandably). Graded one assignment all semester, returned late, no useful comments. Textbook is his. ARTH students love him. I don't get it.
I had never been interested in art history but he made me actually enjoy the class. The way he presents paintings makes them easier to memorize and he only makes you memorize time periods for the test. Definitely take him if you get the chance!
Great Professor. Make sure you take good notes and listen. The tests are all memorization, but still are hard because there is a lot of info. Highly recommend taking him. You will learn a lot. He is very interesting
I took this class because it was required, but eventually I ended up loving it. It is a really interesting class, and Professor Collins is hilarious. All you need to do is go to class and take notes and you will do fine.
Brad Collins is one of the best professors I've ever had. I'm a political science major and just took this class as an elective. I had to study hard for the tests since there were so many paintings to memorize, but overall, I didn't think it was a hard class. He's so helpful and understanding and you'll do fine if you work hard.
Dr. Collins does present material in an interesting way but this doesn't make the material easier to understand. The class is 90 percent memorization and tests are usually graded based on his graduate assistants opinions not his. The graduate students are stoic and give very low grades.
Best professer ever taken. As an art history major, I hope to one day be his TA. Super in depth and knowledgeable on every artist, work, and back ground on every subject covered. Test are easy, extra credit given, will be taking every course offered by Brad Collins.
Your grade is 3 tests, a paper, and a quiz, which isn't much. There is lots of studying!! If you ask him for clarification, it will be given. He is a very nice guess guy, and the lectures are entertaining. The problem is the GA's grade all your work, not him. If you study a lot and don't miss class, you'll be fine
Dr. Collins does not prepare his material before each class and it shows. I had to purchase a bunch of readings from a Mom&Pop copy shop! His tests are awful and consist of material we as class have never seen or heard before. This course is a complete waste of time.
Amazing teacher reason I am an art history major. Makes his classes enjoyable and fun. People who complain usually aren't majors and therefore find the work daunting or uninteresting. He has lived an awesome life from the stories he tells and has amazing experience. Knows an incredible amount about his field. Have taken every class he teaches.
Dr. Collins is obviously knowledgeable and has a great amount of experience in what he does. When you think Art History, you think, ugh. But he makes it soo interesting, he encourages thinking and self-interpretation of the art and provides you with the necessary skills to identify elements of a work of art. Great course, amazing lectures. A++
Amazing man, so cool, totally owns this subject. I've taken him for three semesters straight.
Art History is funnier when he teaches it. After this course, I took another one of his classes because I enjoyed him so much. It's all note based and there are only three major tests- not really any homework. So either get the notes from a friend or show up. Quizlet is your friend.
Dr. Collins is simply amazing. If I could take all his classes I would! He has very entertaining lectures, definitely take notes for whatever he puts on his board or his slides. He tells jokes and funny stories that help explain things better. Do show up since he does attendance every class and gives pop quizzes. Great professor!
Honestly, Dr. Collins is the best professor I've ever had so far. He really changed my view of art. TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES IF YOU GET THE CHANCE!!!! The clear grading criteria and the straight-forward lectures were my favorite. The basic setup of the class really allowed for thoughtful discussions and a fun but super rewarding atmosphere.
One of my favorite professors I have had at USC. It's rare that I actually enjoy lecture, and he makes his classes very interesting. Class is fun and he keeps students involved in the discussion. The tests are not that difficult, but you do need to study regularly if you want to do well. About to take my third class with Dr. Collins.
Okay love Brad but this class was not an easy A. I felt like the grading is too hard and theres not a lot of opportunities to bring your grade up if you don't do so hot on the exams. If you're taking it for core, find an easier class because it's not worth it. Love Brad but hate this class.
My FAVORITE professor at USC! Brad is incredibly knowledgeable and insightful, inspirational, and hilarious! His lectures are incredible - I looked forward to class every day, and miss it so much now that it's over. If you're an art history major - take his class. If you're not an art history major - take his class.
Gives lectures on a lot of works of art relating to each other but will specifically tell you which you need to know. Also on blackboard there is a tab that shows all of the works and terms needed as well as the basic information about said works. Really amazing teacher I got a 99 on the final exam and am now minoring in Art History.
Professor Collins is the best professor to take for Art History. He is very funny, and his lectures are very interesting. He makes sure to tell everybody the specific things that are going to be on each test. As long as you study at least a little bit, you will do great in this class. There are three tests and one essay, but the essay is very short
Dr. Collins is one of the best professor to take for Art History, i am not a art major but i found a new passion for studying works of art. He tells everyone what is going to be on the exams and gives you all the information you need to know on the works of art. The only hard thing is there is like 30 pieces of works for each exam you need to know
Each test memorize 30 paintings, their purpose, author/time, who made for, and what theyre of. Of those,12 will be on the test and you only have to do 9;only reason not to get an a in this class is if you dont put time aside to memorize because you know exactly what will be on the test. No hw. Pretty funny. Notes not uploaded so must go to class
As a non-art history major, I would not take this class again. Although the lectures are interesting and Dr. Collins is very knowledgeable about art history, the grading was extremely harsh for an elective course. The GA's graded everything and checked for word-for-word descriptions of the artworks. Overall, I recommend this class to art majors.
Great professor. Gives you all information that will be on Exams before hand. Theres no surprises, I try to get him for every art history I take. Highly recommend!
Really great professor. Gets really passionate and into the material. Exams are centered around memorization with a small take home writing portion. Make sure to take really careful note of how the question is worded and what he is really asking. I highly reccommend this class.
Good professor! Thoroughly cares about and understands what he's teaching - Talks about paintings in lots of detail and in ways that are easy to understand - Makes learning art history very interesting - tells you what he's planning to put on the exam (will even say something will be on the exam as he's teaching it) - Very passionate and engaged
Brad really is a wonderful professor. He tells you what's going to be on the exam, is incredibly passionate, and actually hilarious. His material is easy to understand and he doesn't try to trip you up. Show up, take notes, and you'll do great. You might actually enjoy the class because his style of teaching can be very engaging.
This was my first art class and I loved it. Dr. Collins is hilarious and cares a lot about his students and the material. If you show up, take notes, and study, you will do great. I will miss him!!!
Doctor Collins is one my favorite Professors at South Carolina and the reason I decided to minor in Art History.
Dr. Collins is amazing, and you can tell he is really passionate about art and art history. He makes all of the material super interesting, he is easily one of my favorite professors.
very interesting class, an interesting person overall, lowkey a feminist and I'm here for it. one paper and three exams total, no cumulative final
Dr. Collins is slightly disorganized and he's very technology-averse, but his in-person lectures are very enjoyable and fascinating. Most of the class is simple memorization, so if you take some basic notes and listen well you will be fine. Dr. Collins is also super funny so this is a nice class if you want a break from your harder major courses.
Professor Collins is an engaging lecturer who makes art history fascinating. While the class involves a lot of memorization, his clear guidance and unstuck AI make study prep a breeze. Attend class, take notes, and you'll do great!
Really interesting material while not being too hard. If you listen in class and review your notes before the exams, you'll probably do fine. He's really entertaining, and, in my opinion, the class is worth taking just to hear him talk
Very lecture heavy, and even though he makes them fun and enjoyable you still need to tune in and not zone out at any point. Attendance is very strict, only 3 absences allowed for the semester. Grading is tough, and your grade is determined by 3 exams and 1 paper. The exams are pretty tough and are simply a lot of memorization and on paper.
Professor Collins is the best! Even though I am an economics major this class was my exchange highlight. It is unfortunate that I have to go back to Germany and won't be able to visit another of his classes next semester. I highly suggest this class especially for non-ARTH majors. It was truly inspiring! Thx Professor Collins.
