Not a very good professor at all. He seems to be more concerned with whether or not the class likes him than teacher physics. He'll just give an example each day and not really explain it. His tests are filled with errors and he just always seems unprepared.
If you want to live, do not take this class.
I chose to take PHY 112 over summer instead of having to take Fobar for another semester. He is always unprepared, mumbles to himself so you can't understand him, and is constantly making errors. I would avoid his class if possible!
Seems to have a bad rep on the site; however, he digs physics, and once you are used to his style class isn't half bad. I would take another course through this professor.
He hasn't been teaching for long, and over the year that I had him he certainly improved. He is obviously interested in his subject and teaching, and with some effort it is not at all hard to do well in his class.
incredibly boring with constant mumbling about irrelevant topics. the level of intrest I had or the class was zero.
He's a little weird, yes, and likes to ramble. You end up teaching yourself but a lot of the grade is attendance and the online hw (which if you get that down, you'll pass the tests). He gives you a slew of formulas and examples the 1st day of the week, & quizzes you on them on the 2nd day, open notes! Attend SI session pre-exam, and you'll do fine
he's a nice guys and knows physics, but not a good teacher. the fact that it's a lecture hall style class doesn't help
He's always willing to take extra time to work with you and answer questions.
I had him for 111 and 112, though his lecture style can some times be a bit unorganized he is definitely improving and is passionate about physics. He genuinely cares how you are doing and is helpful if you go to his office. Nice guy, I thought some of his tangents were interesting but he does tend to ramble.
Fobar rambles every single day about irrelevant things, which makes the class drag on and go by very slowly. He is very smart and knows physics, class is just hard to sit through. ( very boring!!!!!) If you go to class every day you will get a good grade!
His bouts are interesting and related to the topic he is teaching. He is a funny guy, lecture would be dull and boring without some real life examples that people are saying he "rambles" about. He is very helpful during office hours and is a good teacher overall.
I had Fobar for 111 and 112. while I initially could not stand him, I realized the subject he is teaching is difficult and everyone is taking it because it is required, not because they are interested. He tries to make the topics relevant and provide examples though most seem really obscure. He tries to curve A LOT to help those who need it!
Not bad. Class is mandatory and boring, but I usually occupied myself by doing other work or reading. You can easily get an A by paying a minimal amount of attention. Weekly homework can be helpful, get to make your own test cheat sheet. Not great, but bearable.
Fobar is not a bad lecturer overall he just takes some getting used to. He does mumble a bit so that can be annoying. He does epic demonstrations of physics concepts which made things interesting. His tests are very difficult, however with the homework, included lab grade, attendance points and curve, you will have no problem passing the class.
Pretty much 2% teaching and 98% rambling about magnets.
Fobar is an excellent teacher. I was worried taking his class as everyone says he rambles and is boring. I really have no idea wth they are talking about. Everything that he says in class is physics oriented and helped me get a better understanding of the subject. He is funny as well. I was always interested and never bored in class.
Surprised to see so many negative reviews. Fobar is actually a superb physics prof. He's very laid back and has a great sense of humor. His "rambles" are actually short tangents relating the material to real-life cases (and are typically quite funny). Open note quizzes, exams w/ "cheat sheet" & lowest dropped. > 85% is an A, 75% B etc. Easy A.
Rather Easy class, I got a C on both midterms and completely bombed the final and still got an A. Just do well in lab, get 100% on all the HW, attend all class, take all notes, and get 8.5 or better on the quizzes and it will be an easy A
Failed the final, got an A, how does that work? I'll tell you. Class is curved. 2 Midterms (if you have good attendance/clickers he will drop one of them) Lab is part of your final grade, but it's easy, just attend. Pay attention to class when he writes examples and you should be good on the quizzes. Do all the homework and you're golden, good luck
Fobar is a nice guy and really does give you every opportunity to succeed. He holds office hours and is totally non-judgmental of questions and he has an SI which is really helpful to attend. He just loves physics (his tangents) which adds to the quality of the class because he loves real world examples.
He is a funny guy, but puts you to sleep. Attendance and clickers are mandatory. You can fail both the midterms and the final and pass the class with a good grade. 85% and higher is an A, 75%-85% is a B, near impossible to fail the class. The lab makes up 25% of your grade so if you attend labs and get between a 9-10 you will finish with an A.
Terrible at explaining difficult topics. Funny, probably a nice guy, but he is terrible at answering questions, and terrible at explaining things. Nice curve tho
Absolutely horrendous at explaining things during lecture. Not super flexible if you forget your clicker or changing the HW he always has due the day before the test. He was super calm about having a 50% average for the first test. Super HW heavy and you more or less have to teach your self.
terrible at explaining things, probably a very intelligent guy, but can't explain his thoughts
Brad is a super smart guy. He weighs the homework super heavily which is great if you don't do well on the tests and quizzes. He allows group quizzes and drops your lowest test and quiz score. However, he talks so fast your head might explode. He focuses heavily on the math portion of physics but doesn't explain the concepts well. He's not terrible
Worst professor I've ever had by far. Doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time if you're even able to hear over his mumbling. Gives quizzes the day after tests, avoid at all costs.
Brad is an interesting dude. He mumbles a lot and he is definitely a hot mess, but he does know what he is talking about. I enjoy this class but the first half made no sense, the second half is much better. If you sit in the front you wont have a problem hearing, also the room gets hotter the higher up you go, it harder to focus in the back.
Professor Brad know his material well but he used slides which look like downloaded online. He used projector to show his notes instead of writing it on the whiteboard and when he is writing, his arm will cover the note and make it hard to see because he is a left-hander. Lots of homework. Be prepared to work over 6 hours per weeks on homework.
I think Brad was a great professor. Unfortunately he teaches a class that hardly anyone takes seriously, so he doesnt take it seriously either. Honestly Chegg is the only way I survived. Just go to every class. The attendance points will definitely help come grade curve time.
This professor merely regurgitates material from the book, rambles incessantly, and assigns homework that is vastly harder than in class assignments. He is no better than trying to teach oneself the material.
Seems like a cool guy, but is definitely an awful teacher... fails to teach the fundamentals and assigns homework much harder or completely different to anything we have been learning. One of the worst teachers for Physics, avoid at all costs.
Fobar is a really nice guy, pretty funny, and really helps out your grade with group quizzes and dropping your lowest test. However, his tests are hard as all heck, and he does not write them. If I had not found very similar tests to study at other universities, I would not have passed the exams. FOBAR IS THE EPITOME of AN AWFUL TEACHER.
Hell spend 20 minutes on the board doing integrals just to get nowhere and leave the class more confused than they were when they walked in. Lecturers bear no relevance to homework. Gives incomplete or wrong equations or leaves them half solved.
by far the worst professor I have had during my time at NAU. Completely dysfunctional lecture; avoid at all cost.
Very easy to pass his class, the grading system is greatly in your favor. It is a very difficult curriculum but he makes it easy to get an A.
Electromagnetics is tough. If you're willing to read the book, do the homework (which I didn't think was too much) and take good notes during the lectures, you'll do fine. His test topics are pretty much straight from his notes.
Doesn't really clearly state what he expects us to know by the exams.
Nice guy, not a good professor though. Spends too much time in class working through formulas, most often leaving us with multiple things that look the same. He lets us use a 8.5x11 paper on every exam but the exam is not created by him, just copied and pasted questions from other uni's. Expect to be more confused than the beginning of class.
This class is one of those classes where he knows that people don't care about his lectures. He's a pretty nice guy, but he assigns homework that is way harder than what is on a test or quiz. His tests are 20 M/C questions (20 points) and 2 long answer math questions (20 points). Don't be surprised when the class avg. is a 50% for all tests...
Brad is a funny guy, that's where his good qualities stop... He spends the entire class doing useless integrals that do absolutely nothing to teach anyone. They confuse and do nothing to help with the homework or tests. He does curve a lot so passing isn't a huge concern. Go to SI and TA sessions, watch Kahn academy.
Fobar was not the best teacher, but it didn't help that the Pearson homework system was terrible, and did not prepare us at all for tests. I took Fobar for PHY262 and PHY263, and ended with A's in both classes. He provides a lot of extra credit opportunities (he replaced our worst test grades with our best test grades for answering Clicker Q's).
He is a very nice man but his teaching skills are not the best. Very lecture heavy and you have to go to class for clicker points and to see how he works an example bc he does not post it. His tests are impossible so be warned. You do get to make your own sheet to bring to the test. Go to SI especially before the tests to best prepare. Study hard.
Brad is a nice guy, but his class is insane. The lectures have little to nothing to do with either the homework or the tests. The most helpful part of his class were the quizzes. Good luck.
Goes off on many tangents during lectures about higher level physics that no on understands, and randomly brings it back. you have to be a fast writer and keep up. Go to class and he'll drop an exam grade at the end of the semester.
Professor Fobar was a great professor his lectures were clear and his tests were not extremely difficult. He is very strict about using the internet for homework but gives you all the resources you need to do well.
Fobar didn't give any tests this semester (Other than the final), which can be a good or bad thing based on perspective. His lectures are long, but they do provide beneficial information for homework. Overall, paying attention and taking notes gets you along way in this class.
Brad is a very nice guy who cares a lot about physics. He isn't a very good instructor as he takes complex integrals and does not really provide explanations. His lectures are grueling and attendance is mandatory with clicker quizzes given on most days. He really does seem to want to teach and invoke the same passion for physics to other but can't.
Mediocre at best. Most lectures go into tangents. He gives off equations randomly with no context, hard to follow sometimes. He's a great guy, but his teaching is rough. Get ready to teach yourself some of the material. He's easy to talk to. We didn't know there was a final until one month before finals week (to prevent cheating). Exams proctored
Although hes not a fantastic teacher when it comes to teaching his subject, he is a kind and understanding person. No exams besides the final, and the homeworks are honestly where you learn the material. Homework is always due on the same day and same time and should expect maybe an hour to 2 hours of work.
Prof. Fobar wants his students to pass and will help anyway he can. Sometimes his lectures are confussing because he starts taling about other things, however, overall he is a pretty good professor.
Fobar is not the greatest teacher, so you have to know whats going on to understand him. I struggle a lot in physics but was able to do well in his class because of hard work, and using the resources offered. The work is very doable and helps you learn. It also is pretty much always on a schedule which Is also nice.
Professor Fobar was great! He's very funny in lecture and he genuinely cares about his students. I'm not the best at physics but was still able to do well because of the loads of homework and participation points he gives. He's not test heavy, so if you're a bad test taker I recommend taking this class with him!
Prof. Fobar is nice and gives good but very fast lectures. Attendance not mandatory but you will fail if you don't go. Do all the hw without cheating and you'll do well. No tests, just a final which was nice but also very stressful. Online final is proctored but you get unlimited tries on hw. Even if you are smart take recitation!!!!!!
Smart man but not the best instructor he'll give equations without any context and it's hard to follow along with him so it's best that you read the assigned readings before class. Other than that his weekly quizzes are easy and you will do fine if you do your part as a student.
No tests besides final. Occasional quizzes that weren't bad. Homework and assignments allowed you to retake to get to 100% or even extra credit. Go to class even if you don't want to so you won't fall behind. Final is difficult but still possible to end with an A if you do all the assignments to get 100%. Brad was very cool and fun in class.
LOTS of weekly homework, plus a weekly quiz. Fobar was a good instructor, but would sometimes pull equations out of nowhere. Overall tho, would take again. This class was built for you to succeed, make the most of it! Only one exam, the final, mostly conceptual. Lab was interesting.
This class is set up so that you should read before class and show up to lecture with prior knowledge of the topic before hand. The professor will sometimes go on tangents and goes very fast through the equations and topics in lectures that reading before class is a must. There is a lot of in class quizzes and assignments, and weekly homework.
He is a very chill professor. His only exam was the midterm and final. He has weekly quizzes on fridays and the online homework was able to be attempted more than once to get a good score. He was pretty straight forward when lecturing.
Dr. Fobar is not the best at explaining physics. He is smart and passionate but he is unable to explain the concepts in easy to understand terms. He also did not curve the exams despite a majority of people failing. This reflects on his teaching style.
He is very nice, he is willing to help and work with students and he is aware of how difficult physics is to understand. However, I attended SI and recitation and lecture and still didn't understand the subject very well. His way of explaining did not click to me as he does a lot of example problems while the tests are almost exclusively theory.
He makes the tests very difficult and does not teach the material very thoroughly. Although he is a fun and positive teacher during lectures.
I attended SI weekly which was more helpful than the class time provided. Exams are 90% concept-based while the in-class lectures are almost only math including the homework. The final exam was "cumulative" but focused mainly on torque only. Nice teacher and was funny but the way the class is formatted could be better and more interactive.
His lectures were interesting and kept me awake. There is about 9-12 question for homework a week with A-G. There are only 2 tests. The midterm was extremely easy, all conceptual, exactly like the practice test. The final was basically impossible. It was 10x harder than the homework or midterm. Everyone I talked to failed and he didn't curve.
Beware of the exams, they are hard even with notes and worth a lot. You can have a high A and then end with a low B just from exams. His lectures are a little boring but there's participation and it really adds up. you can use chegg for the homework but i'd recommend doing at least some of it to teach yourself.
Based on the structure of the class it's fairly easy to get an A (I got a B on the midterm and D on the final). Just do all of the homework's, end of class questions, and ask him to check your work on the weekly quizzes and you'll be fine. Don't expect to actually learn physics from him
Brad is super chill. There is only two exams for the class which is helpful but also difficult. Every time I have reached out to him he has been helpful. The homework sucks but i fear thats just physics.
Brad is super chill and funny. I think his problem with teaching lower division classes is that he is very smart and often overexplains concepts, when PHY111 is more for bio aligned majors. Homework, in class activities and written quizzes arent hard points to earn. Midterm and final have no study resources, failed final and went from a B to C lol.
He's a very positive person and likes to make jokes every now and then. Personally I would take his course again since he is accessible. If you can't attend class he provides zoom meetings and they are all recorded so you can review them. We only had midterm and final exam which were all online and open note. Homework wasn't bad just don't miss it
Fobar is a nice person and very funny, but he is not good at teaching. I believe he is passionate about what he teaches, but he does not explain concepts to beginners well at all. I failed this class with him twice. He is currently the only professor at NAU that teaches PHY 111, so I had no other options. Actually switched my major because of this.
He's the only professor who teaches PHY111 but he is the worst professor I've had. He goes through his lectures without any thoughtful explanation on why or how he's solving equations, problems, etc. He also only gives 2 minutes per question on the exams. He also gives homework on exam days.
Professor Fobar is a very nice person, but his teaching style is just not favorable. Currently writing this in tears after I just took the first midterm and went down from a 99% to a 65%. Honestly felt like I was not prepared for the exam at all. He strays from the topic during lecture and barley gives you any time to do the exit questions/quizzes.
was a difficult class but he wanted everyone to succeed and would curve things
Dr. Fobar is a funny guy, but the dude is an awful teacher, you won't learn anything from him, he puts in equations that you've never seen before, doesn't explain it, then just continues on. An A+ in the lab will be the one of the only ways for students to pass this class in the future. Even if you were good at physics in HS, this isn't even close.
If I could put a rating of 0 I would. I sit in this class and I genuinely question if going to college was even worth it. The way he teaches, especially in the morning. Nobody else I talked to has a single clue whats going on, and even if everyone fails the midterm or final, he doesnt curve. I dont know how this is fair to students at all.
So let me get this straight, NAU charges 50k for every student, but somehow cant recognize that every physics professor here has tons of horrible reviews. I dont know why there isnt a complete flip of professors. Theres this guy, and the next teacher is a 2 star, then a 1.4 for a higher lecture (112), I hate college.
Brad Fobar seems like a nice man and he means well. However, he is not a good professor and I did not learn anything from his class. There is a lot of homework that is assigned and it is only worth 5% of your grade. He also gives out written problems for attendance once a week, which typically results in the class running 10-20 minutes over.
Really bad. Awful. His lectures are incoherent, he constantly goes on side tangents, and the majority of the class is taught through Pearson. After a semester of open note exams, he drops a bomb a week before the final saying we can only have a sheet of paper for the final. Avoid if you can. Go somewhere else if you can't.
Awful. Lectures didn't help at all, they were so disorganized and nothing he said made sense. His attendance dwindled from 300 to 25, and he told us “I would give you extra credit, but it would hurt the other people's feelings”. Avoid at all costs. Take physics at CCC or online instead. This guy is unhelpful and disrespectful of students time.
Easily the worst professor I've had, his lectures are lazy, being that they consist of pages straight out of the textbook he scribbles on well going off on random tangents that don't even relate to the material whatsoever. He doesn't explain concepts well and most of the time he pulls equations from nowhere with little explanation.
Would come out of his lectures even more confused than I was than when I initially came in. Lectures are useless and do more damage than help. I stopped going to this guy's lectures after 4 weeks and realized I could teach myself without the meaningless tangents, and my grade went up. You are better off skipping class and asking ChatGPT for help.
This guys wouldn't let us use our notes on his final exam because he would get sensory overload from everyone flipping through the pages. After a semester of open note exams, yeah I'm pissed. Get over it.
He spent 15 minutes talking about his son's lizard instead of teaching. I genuinely cannot believe this guy still has his job after everything that I see on here. Everyone hit the nail on the head. Avoid like the plague.
Lectures often went 10-15 min over. He's told us all semester we could use our previous notes on the final. A week before he drops a bomb that were only allowed one page because he'll get sensory overload. He cannot even make a coherent thought. Lectures are useless, I'm against AI but even chat gpt was a better teacher than him.
Pearson should get his salary. When everyone fails the exams he blames us all for using AI to do our homework instead of re evaluating his teaching strategies. This man needs an ego correction asap.
Everyone crying in his reviews is funny lmao i bombed both midterms because I didnt study and didnt pay attention in class, which isnt Brad's fault and is probably similar to everyone else here. Ended up with a B in the class by actually doing the practice exams which got me a B on the final, plus he curved it. Dont take Brad if ur a baby!!
Changed his grading criteria bc his online summer class all cheated & he found out (what a shocker an online class cheated) Hes taking it out on everybody else. Goes off on tangents and doesnt properly explain content. I learned more staring a wall then attending his lectures. Get ready for snide remarks about attendance if your in his 8am class
Easily the worst professor I've had. Overall just confusing and vague when lecturing. His lectures almost always went 10-15 mins over. Usually assumed we already knew everything he was teaching, as if it wasn't an entry leveled class. Never curves the exams even though the class average is 60% and blames us for his lack of ability to teach.
The worst professor I have had. He is pretty funny in class but he is not a good teacher. Does not curve test even though everyone failed it. Offered a little extra credit but it was so small that doing all of it didn't change my grade more than 0.3%, and the way he framed the EC made it seem like we were getting a lot more than we did.
This professor does not teach at all. He is constantly using phrases such as "it's so obvious" or "everyone knows this", instead of actually explaining the material. Unfortunately, he is the only option for this class, but it will be an absolute nightmare.
Brad was a very good professor for my PHY 111 class! He was always willing to help out his students whether that was in class or outside class. The tests are very hard but he willing to help you, and steer you in the right direction.
Made mistakes while showing examples and would skip steps assuming you already had an understanding of the topics. He also made questions more complicated for no reason, to the point where the upper level physics majors I was tutored by didn't even understand what he was trying to ask. Do practice exams over and over in order to pass.
