He does not explain math principles clearly thus making the students confussed and is very very strict. Terefore, this provides great stress and a great deal of homework (more than usuall) for the student.
He is great
GREAT teacher. Highly recommend taking any Calculus class from Bro. Garner!!! Work load is just right, tests are fair. He is ALWAYS willing to help.
He confused himself when trying to explain things. I would do better in class if i just didn't listen to him. I would not recommend him.
He is an amazing teacher and a very nice person! If you need help then voice it and he will help you the whole way!
He was way nice and as long as you take notes and go to class, it shouldn't be too hard. You never have to turn in a homework assignment, just give yourself points on the attendance sheet as it goes around if you did it. I don't like math usually, but I liked his class.
I did not like him
I took calculus I and II from Bro. Garner. He is the man if you want to learn calculus. Tests are extremely fair, homework is reasonable. Excellent teacher. I specifically arranged my schedule so I could have him for Calc II
I loved Brother Garner. He was a fun teacher and if you didn't understand anything he was always willing to help out. I am not very good at math but with him I was able to do my best. He is a great teacher and I would definitely recommend him to anyone who struggles with math. His tests are very fair and you grade your own homework.
Garner s not a good teacher he goes way too fast and is not very clear on different concepts. I would not recommend him at all. He was one of my worst math teachers.
i love him! he's the best math teacher. he is so helpful and is there no matter what. he teachs very clearly and i cannot wait to take another class from him. I've already taken 2 because he's that awesome of a teacher.
Easy class if you show up and do the assignments. He is always willing to help and he knows what he is talking about.
Awesome class loved it very clear. he is always at his office if you have questions. Also he actually will email you back if you have questions. Make the class really fun. This is stuff you'll really use in life.
Brother Garner is a Baller. Math 108 can be a little boring but Garner brings some life into the course. Just make sure to do the homework on schedule. He's always willing to help and replied to my emails quickly. I'd take another class with him in the future
Fun teacher! Really enjoyed his class!
Brother Garner is a one of a kind teacher. His class requirements are very clear and consist of: 1. 10 prep questions before section is discussed 2. 1 10 question quiz per section (use the book) 3. short assignment per section 4. 4 tests+ final (final waived if you get A's on the 4 tests). He is very helpful, kind, organized, makes math applicable
Eh. He was very clear on what was needed to pass this class, but I did not like him very much. He is a teacher that answers with a form of "because I said so", not "try it and see why you can't do it that way". I guess it's personal preference. I prefer the latter.
People who complain about Brother Garner never had another math 108 teacher. He is very good teaching that class. I extremely recommend getting him for math 108.
Strongly recommended teacher for Math108. Finals were open book for my class.
Such a good, helpful teacher! I never understood or liked math before his class, awesome good teacher! wonderful easy to understand class. fun teacher, jokes with students.
Bro. Garner is the bomb. He really wants people to understand the concepts. I absolutely loved his class. I recommend his class to all who desire to have a good and enjoyable math class. He is a great man, and I would take other classes from him if I ever get the chance.
I went into this class thinking that I just needed to get the credit and get the class over with. But Brother Garner really tries to make class fun and enjoyable. Brother Garner is very helpful and willing to meet with you anytime after class to help you if you need help. I definitely suggest taking 206 from Brother Garner
He was a good teacher, when I paid attention I understood, but you HAVE to read the textbook the day before.. Do the prep for the class and you'll be fine. Study and you'll be fine. Show up to class and you'll be fine. Just a typical class. But he did make some people feel dumb for asking questions. But he was always available to help.
You need to read the section before you go to class that day, otherwise you'll be out in left field. I didn't like that after tests you don't get them back to see what you did wrong. Each test has 25 questions, no notes allowed except for on the final. Homework is both out of the textbook and online and you get homework points for doing it.
I hated this class and Brother Garner just wasn't clear at all. I wanted to be taught, not to teach myself. Some things I understood, some things I didn't. Homework assignments were too intense for a 100 level class. I wouldn't advise taking from him.
Bro Garner is a great teacher but fairly easy. He explains everything with clarity and makes time to help you outside class if needed. He really enjoys math and if you pay attention you will catch his enthusiasm. Pretty easy class but attendance is mandatory. He offers a fair amount of extra credit, so if you want an 'A' it is definitely possible.
Great teacher, great class. He helps you really understand math and he makes learning easy and fun. He offers a fair amount of extra credit, so if you want an 'A' it is definitely possible to get it. But attendance is mandatory.
He gives you chances for extra credit and as long as you do all the homework and quizzes but don't do well on the tests you will still do well in the class.
Bro Garner is such a nice guy. He makes math easy to understand and doesn't complicate things. Ask questions and he'll help you out. He's always giving extra credit which really helps boost my grade when my tests aren't enough. I don't dread going to his 7:45 math class, which is huge! Not boring, and has a sense of humor. Take him!
Bro. Garner was a great teacher. I am not someone who likes math, but he made it fun and understandable for me. I would highly recommend taking his class. He will personally help you if you ask. If you do well enough (A level) on the tests he will average them and give you that grade instead of taking the final!
Brother Garner is an awesome man. Because of him, I breezed through this class. He's always willing to help you, and he makes the math super easy! The tests aren't too hard either, and the homework is super easy. Just do the work and you'll do great!
Bro Gardner knows his stuff he gives out a necessary amount of homework to grasp the concepts. His tests follow right along with the homework and quizzes.
The BEST math teacher I've ever had. His layout is very easy to follow. As long as you do the HW and come to class you'll do great. He is a VERY good teacher and knows his stuff! He lets you have THREE attempts at each quiz and take your book into the final. I wish I had him for every math class!
One of the best math teachers I've had!! Very organized and his expectations are clear. As long as you keep up and do all the work, it's easy to get an A!
This was one of my best teachers of the semester. The schedule was strict and clean-cut, which was nice, but that does mean a sizable amount of homework that must be kept up on. One chapter every day, homework every night. If you can keep up with that, you will have a wonderful time in this class and will learn a lot.
I don't like the foundations course for math. I am an engineering major and I feel this is a waste of time so therefore it is hard for me to care. He is an okay teacher but not the best.
Brother Garner is super awesome. He explains well, and listens if you have concerns about quizes or tests. He likes to have fun but doesn't lose cotrol of the class. He is very engaging and will always help out and answer your questions. If I tried harder I could have gotten an A.
Brother Garner is a great guy...but sometimes not the best teacher. I didn't really learn from his teaching methods, but that could have just been me. However, when I did have questions he was always there to help.
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER! I took him for 108 and I learned so much. His expectations are clear and he is easy to learn from. If you go to class and do the helpful homework that he assigns, you will ace his tests. I loved his class so much, I took Precalc with him too. I honestly don't know a better professor; math or otherwise.
When going to class, I learned nothing. Everything I learned was from the homework. Brother Garner was rude and sarcastic (not in a good way) and extremely demeaning. When we would ask questions he would make us feel like we were stupid and often, never really answer the question. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
He did not explain things well and confused himself all. We were tested more on his opinion than facts. He is rude and overly opinionated. It a class titled "math for the real world" we learned about things very unrealistic. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM BROTHER GARNER!
Sometimes I felt it was hard to ask for help because he taught very fast and when I asked for help my questions really werent answered.
Brother Garner has a strange way of going about his class. It's organized very confusing and he doesn't really TEACH in class, he just summarizes what we were supposed to read the night before. Not very helpful.
Bro Garner is a confusing teacher. He often answered questions in a short, snippy tone. However, what's strange about him is that in all of my one-on-one meetings and e-mails, he was nice! I'd say taking Math 108 from him won't kill you, but he won't really HELP you. He'll just summarize what you read and be awkwardly in between nice and mean.
Very confusing teacher, monotone, hard to stay awake during class. Fly's through the stuff you were suppose to read before class and doesn't always answer questions about it. I'm just glad I survived this class and made it out with an A
My math class was hybrid. If you are a visual learner, don't take any online or hybrid class. Brother Garner is a nice person but isn't too clear when it comes to teaching. If you need more than one example, or any example at all, you need to ask. He expects you to be a genius on the material you just read before you come to class. LOTS of homework
Calculus was a difficult course for me, but Brother Gardner helped me through. Attendance makes up a small portion of your grade, as do daily preparation assignments. He drops your lowest exam and replaces it with the final. Don't be afraid in his lectures ask him to clarify, repeat, or elaborate. He is helpful if you ask. Homework every day.
This class wasn't terribly difficult, but I won't be taking another from Brother Garner. He can be arrogant, rude, and is completely monotone. I can't say that a single one of his classes were fun, but they weren't miserable either. He really knows his stuff - I'll give him that. I took this class hybrid and his lectures were enough to get me by.
He is very rude if you are a little off on your comment. I would ask a neighbor a question before asking him.
I really liked the class because it was way more useful than any other class, probably because it was literally "math for the real world". Bro Garner was pretty good as far as teachers go, and if I had to take another math class, I'd definitely take it from him.
Brother Garner is a nice professor, I just have an issue with his grading on assignments when it comes to deadlines.
Brother Garner is a great teacher! He explain really well the subject and he makes sure that we understand what he's explaining. There are extra credit opportunities if you study with someone before the tests. There's a lot of material and homework but if you do everything and put your effort, you'll get an A without any problem!
He is amazing
Brother Garner is an excellent calculus teacher. As long as you attend class regularly, keep up with the class schedule, and study for the tests, you'll do fine. His lectures are not too boring, he does a good job of explaining the material, and is always willing to help you inside or outside of class.
He has a good setup for the class, but he grades horrifically. He doesn't communicate clearly what he wants and docks you on the tiniest things. Every class, you have a formal proof due and it takes up a lot of time. He does give feedback, but it's not always clear. He's taught this class before, but it seems like he hasn't ever taught before.
Brother Ganer is a good teacher. He answers questions and makes you think without making you feel like an idiot. The tests are occasionally confusing, but they are graded fairly.
I would definitely take him again! You are allowed to use graphing calculators on tests, tests only take around an hour, and they are mostly multiple choice. Teaches simply and it's easier to understand the material coming from him than the textbook.
Brother Garner is a better mathematician than I could ever hope to be, but I won't be taking classes from him again. I found it more effective to read the textbook and follow the examples than go to class. Maybe his teaching style just doesn't work for me. He likes to use powerpoint presentations to teach, and it's too fast paced to learn.
Brother Garner's tests are multiple choice (awesome for math) and he lets you use a graphing calculator (some teachers don't). He teaches you how to use calculators to help you on tests. He's not the best at teaching the material or answering questions, but if you go to the math lab to do your work, then you'll learn the material.
Bro. Garner is wonderful and super chill. A lot of times students take advantage of him and don't show up to class because of how chill he is, but go to class because it will be very good for you. The material is really not hard at all. Its just a lot, but thats what you get with a 5 credit class. You can definitely succeed.
*THIS IS A REVIEW FOR 101* if you take this class from him be aware that everyday will go like so... for the first 10 minutes of class he will teach the lesson but he will go very quickly over topics giving one example. then class is basically over. you then get your online assignment that will be completely confusing and make no sense. you fail.
such a terribly system he has going 4 this class. he isnt even a teacher he just has you go online and take the class on a website.
Brad is very short tempered with any questions you might have. The way he teaches his classes is so bad, if you just look around the class you can see how confused everyone is and when someone asks a question he does a terrible job at explaining it. So then someone else will ask another question to classify and he will treat you like your stupid.
THIS GUY IS SOMETHING ELSE. When we pay money to attend college classes on a subject we all hope the the teacher can clearly convey information to help you in the subject. Brother Garner does not do this at all. He teaches for like a fourth of the class time then just sits on his computer and if you have a question he will come help you.
He is not very clear. His class is super fast and he does not teach very well. He does have much patience with the with the students, so he is more concern about going through the material than making sure if you understand.
The professor doesn't have very much patience for those who are struggling to understand and just pushes through lessons as fast as possible. On the projects he assigns, he typically does not give very clear feedback that helps you do better in the future. However, he does allow any type of calculator to be used on tests, homework, and assignments.
You honestly don't need to show up to the class to pass but I think he makes it worth it if you show up. The tests are hard but if you get the help to understand the math you will be fine.
I love Brother Garner, he is super funny and makes sure to explain all the material. He is always open to questions and is willing to help after class. He is really lax on quizzes as well. Honestly one of my Favorite teachers.
Good professor that works with you & answers your questions clearly. Pay attention & do the work & you'll do great. You often work with others on the homework & review in class.
He doesn't teach, he just talks. Goes through the entire lecture in less then 10 minutes. His extra credit is NOT extra credit. I only did half of the extra credit and it dropped my grade because of the ones that I didn't do. If you have a different calculator the the one he recommends he won't help you figure it out. Never taking he AGAIN!!!!!!!!
He cares more about your face being clean shaven than about you learning the material. Very disrespectful to students when they ask simple questions. Extremely power hungry. I would not recommend his class to my worst enemy.
He is not a great professor, he is a little confusing, but not that bad either. The worst about him is his just temper and that he treats you like an idiot when you do not understand something. He also kicks you out of his class if you are not perfectly cleaned shaved, and he does it in a rude way. Avoid him if you can.
Really great teacher that cares about his students. The lectures are about as interesting as it can get with math; however, he does a really good job covering the content and explains it really well. Tests are about 60% of your grade, but there's 7 of them so bad on one won't completely kill your grade. He's awesome and took a second class w/him.
He isnt good at explaining steps. I would show up to class and take the quiz to show I was there then leave because I would learn more from my homework than I would him. The homework is super helpful. The tests arent terrible but they arent great either.
Brother Garner is a great mathematician and a terrible teacher. He doesn't really "teach" but instead rushes through equations while talking to himself. He's not the most respectful towards students. When the class isn't understanding the material, instead of taking a step back and examining his teaching methods, he just gets irritated.
Brother Garner is aware that most students hate math. He gives only a few tests but will go over the material with you and gives extra credit if you study with a buddy before the test. The homework is super easy. His lectures really prepare you for the tests. The quizzes also a very much like the tests (he even recycles the questions). Take him!
It was easy to get a good grade, but it was difficult to understand sometimes the concept he was teaching and it was pretty intimidating to ask for help, sometimes i didn't know what to ask for help for, i just didn't understand the topic. I used math-way and youtube to help me understand some of the topics. I also dislike math so its not all him.
Don't take 109 from Bro Garner. He's passive aggressive, I won't go into detail why. Doesn't teach, half of the class is you doing your "hw." Didn't really learn anything from him, learned more from the website we drop $60 on. Has group quizzes which is annoying, attendance is mandatory, this is a 5 day class so if you don't come your grade drops.
Do yourself a favor and take this class from literally anyone else. This class is hard and Brother Garner makes it so much harder. Brother Garner makes attendance mandatory and then proceeds to consistently waste class time and refuses to slow down and help students that are struggling. I passed this class via the good graces of the tutoring center
It is a super easy class. He let us do assignments during class and discuss them with others. He is a very chill professor
He gives very clear instruction and knows what he's talking about . All his quiz's are group quizzes which was nice. The tests were all online which I didn't like as much, you cant get partial credit if you forget a step or flip a sign. He did give us options to boost our test grades after some of the tests.
Brother Garner is awesome! I took him for Precalc as well. You will have to do your part though. Calc is a course that requires some time, but Brother Garner will help you out if you're stuck. He uses desmos and lets you do it on tests. Group quizzes he lets you use Mathematica. Try to do the HW by hand though. It'll help when it's time for tests.
Brother garner teaches pretty fast and the homework is quite intensive. He uses Alta Newton for homework and if you don't know what you are doing, it can take all day. Also sometimes what he teaches doesn't match up with the homework. There are a lot of group quizzes which is good but if I could go back I would take pre cal from a different teacher
He's good at teaching precalc. However, he is a VERY tough grader. This is a 5 credit class so be prepared for the work load. He's not a bad teacher, he's just really strict when it comes to small mistakes.
He is ready and always willing to help. The material itself is difficult and requires lots of dedicated homework time. Knewton was used for Homework. There are weekly group quizzes from what we learned that week that we worked on together in groups in class. The tests were challenging but shorter, and required dedicated study time.
To all the people saying that he gives out too much homework- this is calculus. It is intensive and it requires a lot of homework. It is going to move fast- it is a four credit class. If you are complaining about the amount of homework in this class you probably should change your major. He provides every resource to allow you to succeed.
Brother gardner is an amazing guy. His class gives alot of homework, he accepted late homework assignments. He is not good at preparing you for the harder test problems. Homework will give you easy problems then your blind sided by unforgivable test questions. there are retest but they are usually 1.5x harder than the original test.
Brother garner is a great guy but he seems like a very average instructor. He does go thru the lectures really fast it's difficult to follow sometimes. He does do lots of group projects but it's not bad since you can work with others in the class. I felt that the explanations in the knewton Alta we use explains better than brother garner would do.
Worthless professor. Waste of time. Puts a slide on the board, clicks through it and says ,"This is how you do it". Youre lucky if he does 1 problem a week himself and even luckier if he gets the problem correct. Forces you to use a program that you can't have on the test and that you will never use again, not even teaching you how to use it at all
The class wasn't too hard but dang, the teacher made it harder than it had to be. Lectures were rough.
I don't understand why Professor Garner gets such a bad wrap, he is actually a very chill and fun guy when you get to know him and is very fair in his grading. Calculus is 5 days a week and has a lot of homework and tests as a result, but he gives you opportunities to do questions together in class, goes over exams, and easy to access in office.
Pretty decent professor.
I would not take him again. He overloads you with homework and tests, and on retakes (if he gives them) makes them harder. Doesn't teach very well, just talks about something an then moves on, doesn't explain it. Would not recommend taking him unless you have already taken Calculus before or are very far ahead.
limited to 350 characters Pros: Kind and calm, knows what hes talking about, will meet with you and sometimes flexible, quizs are done in groups Cons: I personally learned more in tutoring than in class, tests are tough only 1 retake (sometimes no retake) he gives us notes for test, assigns homework over break 2nd time taking this class and failed
Just be careful if you take his class! His TA is very tough grader so does the professor, Retakes are 2 times harder than text itself, a lot of homework loads, I learn more in math tutor than the class. No recommend to take class from him.
