Very nice- tell's alot of stories- makes jokes- very helpful- gives quiz's on some of the reading assignments but they are pretty easy if you've read it. You have to write 5 essays but he'll allow you to use some previous essay's to be another just revised. He's an awesome teacher and I strongly recommend him to anyone looking to have fun in Englis
Good teacher, VERY VERY funny and nice, he is leaniant when it comes to turning in papers, nice quizes that are small and easy, highly recommended
Kool teacher. He's not hard and is willing to work with you if need be.
Very fun teacher, knows what he is talking about, he gives tons of examples and tells super funny stories about his life, he only required my class to write 5 papers and he is super leaniant in grading them, he even lets you turn them late if you want, we watched 2 movies that were very intresting, best teacher on campus!! Highly Reccommended!!!
Best english teacher ive had...never has a bad day, and is always having a good time teaching!
He was a really great literature teacher--very laid back.I liked him and the way he taught.I didn't agree with the way he graded papers, though. If you didn't put something in the paper that he thought you should have he counts off for it.He does let you revise your three short papers and then you can make up to a full letter higher.Recommend
Amazing. Great. Wonderful. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Not only because he is a soft grader, but also because he is really fun. He relates well to his students. Try baking him cookies.
He is a very good teacher. A good teacher isn't necesarily an easy one though. He is hard. If you want to make an A in english then you might want to look elsewhere. If you want to actually learn something then take his class. He grades papers poorly in the way that he will take points away if he doesn't agree with your opinion.
I'd have to agree with the other raters here...he wants his opinions to be included in the essay even if you are trying to focus on something else. He's very approachable though and he'll try to make it easy for you.
I liked his class more than I expected. We had three essays. He doesn't give very specific assignments. I liked that it gave me plenty of freedom, but some people prefer a more specific assignment than "Write an analysis of one of the stories we read." He's very willing to help if you run by his office. I would and have recommended him to friends.
Great teacher !!!!!
this guy is pretty easy, we had 2 short essays and one research paper, which wasnt that bad. the only thing i personally didnt like about him, was the fact he doesnt know when to be quiet. you ask him a question and he goes off on it for like 5 minutes. i recommend him, but be warned, he likes to talk.
He was very clear on assignments and stretched the deadlines on nearly every assignment. You take a quiz nearly every class and they are an easy A if you read through the stories assigned. The essays are the only things I didn't make A's on. I suggest going to his office for advice on essays. He gives a lot of bonus opportunity and I'll take hi
He's a great teacher, i took him two quarters and would take his class again. As long as you do the jounals and turn everything in on time you'll do good. Try to participate in class cause if he knows your name it'll help you out.
He is GREAT! He makes the class fun and makes funny jokes! I had a good time in this class and enjoyed the readings! I would so take him again!!!!! The work is easy and he explains everything you need to know!
He is a good teacher but he also just likes to hear himself talk sometimes. Pretty easy grader and lets you revise 3 of the 4 papers. If you read the stores and write the essays then it is a pretty laid back class.
Hatley has a way of making those who don't care anything about literature see what's going on and make connections to real life. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone taking 102.
i am horrible at English but Mr Hatley explains things really well and lets you revise your papers take him if you can
Hatley is amazing! Best English teacher ever!!! If you show up to class, read the stories, and don't half-ass on the essays, you'll be fine. If you go up to him after class with any problems he'll be very willing to help. He likes to see people try in his class. He's a great guy.
If you're there, like you should be, you will learn something about literature and how it still relates to life today. And you'll learn how to write a better, more analytical essay about it. By the end of the term I learned a lot and am thankful that I did.
If You want an easy A on quizzes or journal entries he is good. But if you want an Essay grade better than a C or a low B then dont take him, because no matter how sound and near perfect you essay is he grades slightly on favoritism and isnt generous on his essay grading like he says he is. He does let you revise them but only for a letter higher.
Dont expect an A on a paper if you dont think like him and dont have the same opinions as he does. Very Bi-est on essay to the point that if his voice isnt heard then he will dock you point. Quizzes and journals are easy but this class isnt a GPA boost since essays are most of your grade. Pretty helpful but he will grade different then his advice.
Got more out of it than expected. Hatley made it more than tolerable, interesting even. I might even minor in English now. Not hard but not easy either; you have to read carefully for the tests and papers. I'd take him again.
I was pretty Ho Hum about the class at first, but it was pretty good. I no longer fear literature, nor was I bored stiff by it. I never would've guessed that going into it.
Hatley is awesome. He is very reasonable and just the right amount of challenging. Enjoyable English class!
He is such a great teacher. He understands the material we go over and explains it very well. He does assign a good it of reading but it is easy reads. You take a quiz once a week, and he gives you half the answers before. He also assigns two papers, that's it! I will definitely be taking him again, and I recommend you do too.
He is alright. He is super helpful if you have any questions. It is a whole lot of reading, but he reviews each story (beware he takes way to long at this). If you read the stories, attend class and pay attention then you could get away with a C with barely trying. Papers are not that bad at all, just don't be a procrastinator!
Sometimes he gets tongued-tied; occasionally he sticks his foot in his mouth; but when he mostly doesn't, the reward is pretty big.
Wasn't easy. But hardly an academic nightmare either. Research paper is half the grade, but you get 4 weeks to do it; so there's really no excuses, and he'll tell you so. Might take him for Amer Lit 212 too; if I can get in.
Easy class! Meet essay requirements and you will pass!
Lots to read but read the stories, attend class and pay attention. He goes over every bio and story you have to read. Take notes! Papers are short! Quizes are easy! I would take him again.
In all he is a good teacher. Don't skip class. Do the readings and you will pass the quizzes. Two papers. You get to revise. Sort of helpful.
I loved him. Work was challenging but not terrible. Actually enjoyed doing the research paper. Felt like I was learning something the whole term. He may not always look it, but he's very approachable and helpful. Want to take him for 212.
He is very good at what he does, but as he will tell you he loves depressing things so many of his readings are depressing. overall his style is good and he explains everything very well. Dont expect his class to be easy though.
Hatley's a pretty cool guy, funny and sometimes self-deprecating. You will not be uncertain of any dates or assignment requirements, he usually repeats himself several times. Creates a chill classroom environment, doesn't single people out or require participation in the discussions. Grades the papers pretty hard, you will probably not get an A.
Hatley is a great professor that gives amazing lectures and a lot of feedback. He is a tough grader; if you want an A, you're probably not going to get it. Weekly journals on stories that you read, but he literally tells you what you can write about it in class. You will ALWAYS know when assignments are due, he constantly repeats important info.
As advertised. But if you don't like reading and writing, it could be tough on you.
Not impossible. Somewhat interesting. But I suppose that depends on if you don't mind reading. It's a literature class. That's the point. 2 exams -- challenging but fair. Quizzes. One short research paper.
Hatley will talk in every class. You have to do 10 journals, two of which are on the very last day of class. When he is grading your essay he basically rewrites it, and he will tell you what you need to do to improve but is not clear. The class requires a lot of writing and the final grade is a 2500 word research essay with very specific criteria.
Talks way too much. 10 journals and two essays (Literary Analysis and Research Essay). Very specific criteria for any writing. You will need to other novellas for class. If you read something you will write a journal on it. I will never take him again-not my first pick for English teacher. IF YOU ARE NOT A STRONG WRITER DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!
I liked him. The stories are interesting and he explains them well, and gives you plenty of ideas for what to write about. Just listen and stay off your phones. Gives good feedback and can revise 2 essays if you've been in class. Told us the first day about all the journals and research paper. It's college. What are doing here?
He helped us during the quizzes and if you go to his office hours for the essays he will help you out. I only got one A on my journal essay so I think he is tough on giving A's.
He was kind of a hard grader. But he is helpful when asked, and I learned a lot about Literature. I might even minor in it now. I hope I can take him for 212.
I really enjoyed his English 102 class. If you want an A, show him that you care. He always stays a little longer after class for any questions. Be receptive to his comments on your papers, even if you think youre a great writer. Take advantage of all the extra credit. He was the best English teacher Ive had by far.
I loved his class. If you don't make A's on your journals, don't worry , I only made an A on one journal and the rest were B's but I still ended with an A in the class. He really only makes you do journals so you can get used to his grading habits. Don't be scared off, he really just looks at how much you have improved and how much you care.
He has a bad habit of over-explaining things, which only leads to more confusion. The first half of class can be him just restated the exact same thing from before. Has a hard time clarifying issues with grading criteria and his handwriting is sloppier than mine. If you are willing to get an easy B with tons of frustration, take him.
It's about Literature; it's complex and there's no formula for writing well. If you're not a patient reader, or listener, if all you ever do is text, don't take his class cause you probably won't write thoughtfully. Your in college; and its definitely not Ur high school class, or Ur mama's. No Dr. Seuss or Harry Potter here.
He's alright. I learned something. Class was pretty chill. But you have to read to do well on the midterm and final exams. Quizzes not hard really. One 5-6 pg research paper, but with some specific criteria. I'd take him again.
He's a great professor that wants you to write to your fullest potential. If he thinks you're not trying you won't get a good grade. Stayed going to him for help and he did just that.
He is an amazing teacher, and lectures are really interesting. The downside to him is he grades very harsh. No one has gotten an A and the highest grade is a mid B. He grades your essays like you are in a 400 level class. I would take him again because he can tell you the stories in a way you can understand him. But if you want an A do not take him
Make this your priority class. This is a challenging course and Hatley grades accordingly. I learned a lot from this class, and became a significantly better writer. Hatley teaches well and is entertaining. Go to his office hours and the writing center. If he sees that you are working hard and improving you will do well.
At first, i liked this class. After the middle of the quarter i wish he wouldve had a solid schedule for each paper due. He grades harsh and when you confirm with him on what do he complains he has said it before (but along with 5 other assignments do) if you have to take him RECORD HIM TALKING cause if not, you're lost. No organization. terrible.
He waits until the last minute to give info. If you want to pass with a good grade do not take him.
I was grateful for what we had to read. And you have to write a lot. I did not have any problem following the assignments and what he would tell us to do. But I'm not the virtually illiterate type of student who cannot listen well and spends half the class with their face on their phone either. You get what you deserve with him.
Dropped this class before, twice, with other profs. His class wasn't easy, it's still a lot of reading, but not impossible, and I was readier for it this time. If you don't like to read, get over it. He makes it tolerable and tips his hand about test questions, so be in class.
I would not recommend this class! Waited til the end of quarter to put grade on transcript Did not upload grades into portal and he is an overall rude person that is not willing to help you without degrading you as a person first.
Do not take his class
He's the best! But the stories you have to read make the class, as long as you don't mind reading. Otherwise you might have a problem. There's a lot of little papers and a longer research paper, but he gives plenty of ideas of what to write on and makes it interesting, if you're really paying attention. That's key.
If you want to hear thought-provoking, exceptionally detailed lectures on phenomenal stories, then look no further. As long as you keep giving him the attention he deserves, then you'll realize how often he drops hints about what sort of content will appear on the quizzes and tests. Go into class with an open mind and you will be alright.
I would not recommend this class!! He literally brags about the fact that "no one gets an A in his class" which is absolutely ridiculous. I tried very hard in his class and even went to his office hours. He was not helpful and he grades way too hard for a Freshman level class. I should have dropped when I had the chance!
I made an "A" in his class, and I wasn't the only one. Had to work for it and take advantage of revision and bonus chances. I for one want my university degree to mean something. We peer critiqued some classmate essays and some were junior high at best. If you have a complaint maybe consider cosmetology, or even kinesiology.
He was the best, and he gives plenty of notice about what's due when. Though much of it is due at the end, he tells you weeks in advance, you have to listen and pay attention and just engage with him and ask if you're confused. It is a lot of work, not impossible, and I hate English, but I didn't mind him. Lot of whiny babies in class it seemed
I'd gone in not really liking Mr. Hatley bc he seemed rude at first, but he turned out to be super helpful with a nice sense of humor. He explains everything and basically tells u EXACTLY what's going to be on the quizzes. I cannot express enough how helpful he was: after class, during office hours, and even on due dates. Loved his class.
He ain't scared. He'll tell you what it really is about it.
Dr. Hatley is a good professor to have for 102. As long as you go to class and pay attention to his lectures you should do fine in his class. He is a tough grader, but he gives you good feedback for the first paper and journal. The quizzes are straight-forward and he gives you answers to some of the questions during his lectures.
He literally brags that no one makes an A in his class an you will be lucky to get one. He will give you a bad grade on your papers with like one sentence feedback and expect everything to be fixed.
You might wanna wait til the course is over before talking feedback smack, because he really gives it in the last few weeks when it matters most leading up to the research paper, which is for most of your grade. And then boy does he ever! I made an "A". Had to work for it though.
Too much work for a freshman composition class. He tells you to see him during office hours but acts annoyed when you do. I got an A but had to work a lot harder than one should to get an A in freshman English. Take literally anyone else. You will never know your grade in the class until it's on your transcript.
The best, most helpful English teacher I've ever had. Was a lot of reading and writing, but Tech is a University, not a community college, and for most it's the last English class you'll have. Hard work, yes, but was grateful, learned a lot . . .
Be ready to write in his class but he gives ample bonus. Do your work on time and its difficult to not get an "A".
The worst teacher I have ever taken. He rambles the entire time and does not care for any of his students to succeed. He wants to seem like the "tough guy" and runs the class as if he's the dictator. He told our class nobody is perfect and will not make an A on any paper. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS
Very cool person, and pretty funny, however he grades very hard. This class is not a push over and you have to put a good bit of effort in. If you take him, take him during an easier quarter and make his class your main focus
DO NOT TAKE HIM. For someone that is supposed to be helping students in a freshman class he is so rude and gets off on degrading the students right before failing you. He acts as though letting you revise an essay is a gift but he takes a month to give it back with horrid handwriting and just restates your points in his own words.
He is a pretty good teacher when talking about interesting ideas in the required readings, but sometimes I felt like the class was a bit disorganized. During the course we would have to write 2 major papers and the minimums for both the goals were hard to understand. Overall a good guy and will help you a lot in & after class if you have questions.
Hatley is great if you are looking for a class and professor that will strengthen your writing and composition abilities - but be ready to work hard. There is a lot of writing in this class, but if taken seriously and by doing your best, you will reap great reward. I definitely feel that he has prepared me for future college English/Lit classes.
While he seems cool, I would not recommend taking his class unless you are an English major. He grades harshly and is too much investment for a freshman-level, general requirement class. You also won't have a good idea of your grade until after the drop date, so you will be stuck if it does not go well. If you want an A, do not take it.
Hatley overall is a good English Professor, while he does ramble on a lot and repeats himself quite often he gives really good feedback and ideas on the books/short stories. He does grade very tough and his feedback on papers can be sometimes harsh however he gives lots of bonus points and cares for his students.
Overall a pretty chill and relaxed professor. He gives out quiz answers in class which is nice. Mostly essays, if you show up you'll pass. Be ready to write a lot though.
Would not recommend taking him unless you want your self-esteem to be crushed. I can handle harsh criticism, but it is different when you are rude for no reason. I have gotten 9s on most journals. However, when it comes to essays, he gives feedback that doesn't pertain to the paper and enjoys giving out C's like Christmas presents. DON'T TAKE HIM.
Hatley was sick and his class was pretty fire. It was my 2nd time taking 102 (it's not easy at Tech since it is your last English class) but I was better equipped this time around. It's definitely not a class for mama's boys, little girls or red-headed Bo Peeps who need to grow up. I had to. Glad it's over, but grateful to have had him.
It's definitely not high school English . . the stories and films covered were adult and mature. It's is a good bit of work, so read the material, closely, be engaged, be in class, and pay attention and you'll get good ideas for what to write about. If you cannot do that, if you're immature or have ADHD, then you probably aren't ready for it.
He never gives prompts on his writing so it makes it close to impossible to write and you have to read and write a lot. He doesn't answer emails and says the same stuff every class over and over. Class was way harder than it should have been.
The professor grades essays and assignments as if everyone in the class is an English major, which I feel is a little extreme for a 100-level course. But he's a nice professor who wants his students to do well. Gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities, as well as essay revision points, which make getting a B easily obtainable with work
Very clear syllabus. Hatley does yap a lot though, he repeats a lot of stuff said on the syllabus, but he cares. You have to choose a small novel to read, and there's two big papers. Otherwise, it's just short stories and journals. All material in this class is mature and enjoyable.
This professor is not someone that you should take if all you need is an English class. His baseline for grading by his own words is that if you do everything in the guidelines you will get a B. However he will take points off for "fluff" in a 2500 word essay and especially so for your intro and by points I mean letter grades. Would not recommend.
A LOT of reading and quizzes compared to other 102 courses i have heard. he goes in depth of the books read which makes journals easy to dive into and gives quiz answers in class. a tough grader w/lots of feedback and the 2 finals essay were rough but I think this class made me a better reader and writer overall as a non-english major.
Does give the answers 2 the quizzes. He's a !VERY THOUGH! grader on writing assignments. Would try to hurry and push journalss in WHILE you're doing a 2500-word essay @ the end of the quarter. The way he assign's them so close make it stressful, inconvenient, and hard 2get them in on time b/c of the huge workload. There're revision points 4 essays.
