Funny in class, but his tests are sometimes hard. He comes up with weird problems.
Sucks! Take somebody else. Much easier.
I absolutely loved his class. If you have had him for chemistry and you are scared to take him for Geology....think again! This has been my favorite class at NGCSU!!! I loved the labs!!!
Hardest teacher I've ever had. His tests are nothing like what he teaches in class!
Way too demanding. Required stupid field trips that WE had to pay for...some were on a Saturday. Absolutely ridiculous.
Dr. Herbert was my favorite teacher. He was not easy by no means but if you do thework and study then you will do fine. The field trips were awosme!!yes you have to pay for them but this is the only class you will have this much hands on experience.
Dr. Herbert is wonderful. Its silly to complain about the field trips in Geology because students are made well aware of them first thing. It is unfortunate that people complain about the professors that actually challenge students to become better.
Very hard to pass the class even if you study like a mad person.
He challenges everyone to do their best. He is very funny
Cool guy and funny. I was really interested and the class was fun. (Except for the tests, but really... are they ever fun?)
learn how to calculate an acre-foot ..dimensional analysis out the wazoo. but overall, i learned a great deal of material.
Herbert's tests are very difficult due to the wording and strange types of problems he gives.
Tests are VERY hard. That is.....VERY HARD! Class is interesting though.
He makes chemistry really funny. The only problem is you don't just have to do chemistry, you have to do chemistry fast.
Very good teacher. Makes his class difficult to weed out the poorer students, leaving the better students to learn more and more often than not get a slightly lower grade. This class definitely gives back no more than you put in.
Makes the class hard to weed out the lazy students. If you stay in, you have fun and learn even more. The field trips are awesome!! You will soon be able to apply most of what you learned. Tests are hard-but you remember it after the semester is over. He is a great person who is eager to help!!
Be prepared to drive. His field trips are neat but it is not worth the sometimes two or three hour trips and some of the classes that you will have to miss to go on them. The tests are really hard, but if you memorize all of your notes, you should be good. I got an A, but I was one of the very few.
Very hard class, but I learned ALOT! very funny guy. also take Dr. Herbert for lecture and Mr. Kruger for lab. That way when Dr. Herbert makes fun of Mr. Kruger you will get his jokes. Those two make a great team!
Hard as crap!
A very good professor, but his tests were very hard. I would recommend doing the homework he gives. Studying is a must.
He is a very good funny professor. His lectures rock, but his tests and quizzes are difficult if you are shoooting for a high grade. It gets frustrating at times, but he does put a curve on most of the tests/quizzes. All in all I would recommend to attend class and do homework, and you should be ok.
Herbert is a great man. He'll help you whenever you need it even if it's a chemistry-based project from another class. He doesn't like slackers and helps out those who want to do well and will work hard.DO NOT LET YOUR CELL PHONE RING IN CLASS!A great teacher and cares. NOt many of those professors a
He's very friendly and very helpful in class, with very clear explanations. Plus, the class lab is mostly made up of trips, so it's not that bad. The class keep you interested, he thinks he's quite humorous... in a corny chemistry guy kind of way. :)

Hard tests. Keep up in the class and study a lot. He is a great guy though.
the classes are fun but you have to attend ALL of them!but you have to knkow your stuff b/c if you have to go back and erase smth on the test / quizz you will not have time to finish, let alone time to think! in all firness he is a great guy and taking his class was fun!
The class is hard but it is very fun. Study for the tests and go to labs.
do not take his class if you want a high grade. his tests are impossible. i would suggest another teacher
Dr. Herbert is the best professor I've ever taken (out of 45). I studied more for this class than any other, but got an A. He will keep you laughing in lecture but will cover a lot of material. GO TO CLASS! The field trips are very fun! Tests are hard, so study! Very friendly and helpful. If you want to learn a lot and enjoy it, take Herbert!
This was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. Class time was completely devoted to taking notes, every class, every moment. Tests/Quizzes absolutely require you to be well prepared. Do ALL the homework. Tough tests to say the least. Great humor. Grades on a curve, which helped me get the "A" I wasn't expecting.
The tests are freaky long and complicated. I hope you're good at math for this class, because he'll required you to be. Honestly, you should probably already have a pretty good understanding of high school Chemistry before taking the class, but he has a huge grade curve that really helps. Study hard and you'll do well.
One of the very interesting class. But not the hardest class. You do not need high level of math skill at all but just basic algebra skill required. Only thing I do not like is that each test contains too many queistions to finish in a given time.
A very good & entertaining professor. He is good with the students & makes the chem lectures very interesting & a times humourous. However, his tests are extremely hard & he doesnt always cover the test material in class. Don't go into the class expecting an A...you'll just be depressed. I was a straight A student until I got a C in his class
he's really funny, and his curving system is awesome... but the reason is because its hard as crap.
Dr. Herbert was one of the better teachers I've ever had. However, that doesn't stop him from being hard. I did fail the class and retook it with another teacher. I never paid attention or studied the second time and made a B, easily, just from his notes I received a semester earlier. He's hilarious which makes the subject not such a drag.
He has a great personality and he is very funny and very friendly, but he is a horrible teacher. He should definitely choose a different career as he has none of the qualities that would allow him to be good at this one. If you take this class, expect to give it all you've got, teach yourself everything, and still end up failing.
Miserable testing style. No study guides, no reviews, teaches from slides from "the old book" so you can't study the charts he presents.Handouts are eligible. Must have chemistry and advanced math to pass his tests. Don't bother w/this survey to meet core. Take another. You can learn, but still fail. Grades on curve to save himself, not students.
this guy is a jerk. Basically everything you don't want in a professor.
He was a great person, but extremly hard teacher. I am having to retake his class with another professor and am completly lost in the second class because of how he thought things should be taught and used. If you need Chem 1211, find another teacher, but know that all chem teachers at NG are not that great of teachers.
He is a really great teacher. His humor definately keeps class entertaining and engaging. Sure, his tests are tough, but managable if you study hard. If you begin his class with an attitute, it will really get you nowhere. Be positive from the get-go and you will be fine. DO study, DO go to class, DO ask him questions.
He is one of the best teachers at Norht Georgia. He's funny and really knows what he is talking about. While his tests are hard, he grades on a massive curve, which helps even things out
Bottom line - chemistry is a hard subject and Dr. Herbert is a hard professor. His tests suck but he grades on an enormous curve. His sense of humor keeps class interesting. He will meet with you and help you in any way he can. He is very approachable and understanding. The best part - the man wears a different tie every single day.
he makes class interesting and fun. HW- optional and in the book, if all done in the semester 10% is added on the final!! TEST- hard but problem solving is the same as the hw. ATTENDACE- GO TO THE CLASS..missed two classes felt lost. overal he is really helpful and if u have a question he doesnt mind you asking in class or after class.
Attend class and do the homework. He is generous with partial credit, using the prior tests and quizzes as study tools for the exam is extremely helpful.
Go to class, pay attention, do the homework. Simple as that... Dr. Herbert rewards effort and hard work, without it, you'll be on your own. He is hilarious, sincere, and wears a different "witty" t-shirt every day. He is now tied with Van Sickle as the best professor of all time. I look forward to going back for analytical later on.
Dr. Herbert is a great teacher and extrememly fair! He grades on a massive curve and he's willing to help with anything! He gives you almost everything you need to know in lecture but if you want extra credit you have to do the book problems.
Dr. Herbert is hilarious and entertaining. He makes learning Chemistry fun and interesting. His tests are hard, but if you have questions, he will do his best to help. And he has a huge curve because he understands how hard it is. Great teacher, take him for 1211 if you can.
One of the greatest teachers at NGCSU extremely helpful if you ask questions, you MUST attend class as chem is not easy and doing the homework is extremely helpful. His tests are humorous as are his lectures and he scales things up massively.
Dr. Herbert was a great professor, he explained things very well and was always up for answering questions. He wore a different tie everyday which kept it fun and he joked around with the class too. Tests were hard but if you studied, you got it. He gave half credit which saved my life!
Dr. Herbert is the best teacher! He is excited about the subject and makes it entertaining. He is tough but in the end its completely worth it. He uses a statistical bell curve with his grading and is very fair.
Herbert is a very hard teacher. Nothing to sugarcoat about it. However once you take a class like his it only gets easier. He does curve the class so just go to class and do the extra credit!!! Easiest way to pass his class, GO TO IT!
HE IS HARD! Plain and simple. Go to class. He covers a lot in his lectures. Do the hw he assigns. His tests are the HARDEST Ive ever seen. Do not mess around and blow his class off.
Here's the deal: Geology is not a joke. It's actually pretty hard for a survey course. If you are like me (an English major looking to fill a science requirement)just go take astronomy or envi sci: much easier. Dr. Herbert is the MAN, but his tests required actually studying and taking really good notes and well, effort. Be warned.
Dr. Herbert's tests are very long and hard. I never actually finished any of his tests or quizzes. However, I managed to pass his class with a B...thank heavens for partial credit and extra credit for turning in the homework! He is a really good teacher, but the subject is extremely hard. You must show up to every class if you expect to pass.
Is Herbert an awesome instructor? YES. He is very relateable and although he covers a ton of ground, you can enjoy his lectures if you try. That being said, his class and his tests are not for those who want to prepare as little as possible. You definitely have to work hard to get a solid grade in his class, but he does take into account who tries.
Hard class, but so worth it. He will explain something a dozen times if he has too. No phones in class. Extremely difficult tests, but the SI sessions are a lifesavers. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK! 10% bonus on the final. Not an easy class, but the rewards are great. Very good professor.
Hard.. this is a terribly hard course. He is really a great person but took this with another professor after taking it and failing with him and he made things entirely more complicated than they need to be
Excellent teacher. Tests are very hard, but do all of the EC hw & you will have a much better understanding of material. Explains things really well in class; helpful outside of class. Grades on a curve which was grade booster for me. After taking him,all my other classes are a cinch. Made me fall in love with Chemistry & learn how to really study!
Dr. Herbert is awesome as a person! Just be respectful towards him and show up to class and you'll be on his good side, which is a plus. The lab for this class is mostly field trips but they're really fun. Tests are hard, but if you study hard you'll be fine. This class is enjoyable and I highly recommend it.
The labs are field trips that you must drive to. He is a very nice teacher, however for the tests, he expects you to know almost every word that was said in class. The tests are all short answer and explain this or explain that. He says he likes to "pick your brain". He grades on a curved scale. Nice man. Hard class.
Attention those who are going to college to ACTUALLY apply yourselves: Do not listen to most of these sub-par comments about Dr. Herbert. He is a true professor; he actually knows how to teach!... Which is rare nowadays, sadly. The best thing about him though is that he is such a nice person. I can go to him for anything because he truly cares.
His tests were different from what I was used to. They were mainly short answer questions combining a lot of topics into one question. He is funny and seems to care about his students.
Dr Herbert is a very tough professor. He is a very good professor and makes you work for your grade. You have to KNOW the chemistry to do well. He is a very fair grader, though is grading system isn't the most clear. He doesn't take attendance, but it's strongly encouraged you attend. If you want to learn, I highly recommend taking Dr. Herbert.
Funny guy
Herbert is a funny guy, but his class is the hardest I have ever taken. He goes way into detail where it's not needed. His tests are impossible to even finish, but he gives a lot of partial credit and extra credit.
Dr. Herbert is one of the best professors I've ever had. I have the utmost respect for the man.
He made class so fun and engaging with his personality. You can tell he really cares about his students and is there for you when you need help with anything class-related. And will lend an ear and advice for personal matters. Just an all-around person, really.
Dr. Herbert is one of the best professors if you do not have a good chemistry background. He is very passionate and gives homework questions for extra credit. His class is tough and he makes you work for your grade. He also is old school and does not use computers. All your notes are taken by hand and he doesn't post powerpoints. Go to class.
He taught the material well; however, be prepared to know the material forwards and backwards. You will not get a lot of time for his tests, so you can't get by with only knowing some of the material. He's a phenomenal teacher, but be prepared for the short length of time on his test.
Dr. Herbert is the best! If you go to class everyday and do all the homework you should be fine. Tests are hard and long but he grades on a heavy curve and gives lots of partial credit and optional extra credit.
He is the worst professor I've had at UNG. His tests and quizzes are impossible. There is no chance you will pass his class if you don't come to class. He enjoys making fun of girls in sorority's, but can make you laugh. He also wore a different tie to every class.
Dr. Herbert is a GREAT lecturer. He makes the material easy to understand, and is entertaining to listen to. His class is very tough, though, and you will have to work HARD to get even a B. The only bad thing about him is he gives the ACS final AND one he wrote which is insane. And his tests are too long in my opinion.
In the beginning, he seems really hard, but if he knows you try; he will help you out. Had him in summer with 9 other students, and he made an effort to get to know everybody. Grades on a curve, usually a 100-80 is an A. Uses standard deviation to grade! Love him, wish I could have him for 1212!! Don't study, lazy?-don't take Herbert.
Great teacher and all around guy. He cares about his students. He will get to know you. I am still talking to him a year after taking his one class. He is not an easy A, but a well-earned A. I don't like to say this, but count on a curve. A++ prof.
Dr. Herbert's class was an absolute joy and the perfect wake up to any Freshman who think they can coast through college, I know because I was one of them. In class is lecture heavy, but very enjoyable due to his passion for the subject and goofy personality. Outside of class will be spent on the big homework load, but it helps tremendously.
He's funny. He gives a lot of homework to help you prepare for the tests. He also curves everything which is the only reason I passed. He goes too fast for me, has bad handwriting, and writes mostly on the board. For someone with not much chem background, I should've taken a teacher who goes slower.
Wonderful teacher. He is engaging and fun in lectures. Even though, he grades hard and effectively. He gives a ton of required homework and has bad handwriting. Make sure to read or go to lectures.
Dr. Herbert is an experience. He is so funny and old school. His handwriting could use some work, but he is always willing to tell you what he wrote several times. His test can be kind of out of left field but he is just making sure you are paying attention. A very fun teacher to have.
Dr. Herbert is great. He is very funny and cares about his student and makes that very obvious. He gives a lot of homework but im glad because it helps so much on the tests and quizzes. His handwriting sucks but he will explain and rewrite it 10 times if you ask. He wants you to do well. Oh and count on a substantial curve and big extra credit!!!
Dr H is incredible. He made the lectures so much fun and entertaining (and wore a different tie every day!), and he is so caring for each student. However, this class was the hardest one I have ever taken. I had to WORK HARD for my grade, and his curve and extra credit homework helped too. His tests are hard, but I think he's totally worth it.
This class was so hard but so rewarding. He made the class very fun, but his tests were pretty brutal and hard to finish. Anything 80-100 is an A and he is generous with partial credit, curving, and giving extra credit to make up for how hard the tests are. I spent hours every day reading the textbook and working on the homework and it helped LOADS
Hes honestly a great guy and genuinely cares about all of his students passing. There is a lot of work in this class so youll definitely have to work for a good grade. He is computer illiterate and doesnt use D2L for grading and no powerpoints. His hand writing is horrible on the board. He also flies through material. Would take again tho!
Dr. Herbert is a really nice, funny guy, but I personally strongly disliked him as a professor. His lectures are very unorganized and he doesnt explain material very well. He uses examples that no one understands, and often doesnt give out the appropriate knowledge/explanation needed to do well in the class. Hes very scattered and difficult.
Really great guy. His tests are terrifying but if you work hard you can do it. Lectures are great and actually enjoyable for me. Would definitely take again
If you plan on taking chemistry. At all costs avoid this guy. His tests are designed for you to not finish. The average grade will be considered a C. There is no point in making this class as hard as he does. There are NO multiple choice everything from his quizzes to test to final is free response. If you choose him. Good luck
Dr. Herbert is a funny and caring guy. BUT his tests are made for you to not finish in the given time. SI sessions are a must, hours of chemistry each day, uses the average grade on an exam then finds the standard deviation to allot the different grade ranges. He has quotas for how many As, Bs, and Cs etc will be awarded at end semester. DONT TAKE.
A lot of homework, but doing it is worth it. Does not like technology. Your textbook will be your best friend. Write down all notes written on the board. To study for tests, redo all example questions he does in lecture. Do not take if you are not willing to put in a lot of effort. Grades with partial credit (try to answer questions). Great dude
. He is the worst professor on the campus and assigns homework that takes literally 10-20 hours a week. He says you're supposed to study by doing the homework, but if you don't learn from that then you're screwed. He also admits to lying about the content that will be on quizes. He says the quiz will be over 1 but it will include all content from 2
I ended up dropping because I would come home crying almost every day from his class because I was so confused. He goes so fast while lecturing you don't even know you're confused until you try to study. Assigns lots of hw due the day of tests/quizzes. if you don't already have a good foundation of chem don't bother taking this class.
His class is extremely difficult if you don't have a good foundation to chemistry. He talks so fast during his lectures and his assignments take hours upon hours to complete. You need to go to the SI, a study group and a tutor if you want an A. He will brag about the fact that people fail and/or drop his class and attributes it to Darwinism.
First off, Dr. H is an amazing person who really cares about his students and is freakin' hilarious. Despite this, if you start slacking at all, he'll know and begin to make things harder on you. If you keep yourself up in this class he'll work with you and help you out. Difficult tests, but explains things in lectures thoroughly.
Dr. Herbert is amazing. You can tell from day one he cares a lot; he has high expectations but is always so reasonable. Lots of homework but it's designed very effectively (not busywork) and really prepares you for the tests (which are hard). Lectures are good, despite fairly bad handwriting. Lots of partial credit if you show your work.
He's a very nice guy, but because of COVID-19 I only had in-person lectures once every week which just is not enough to pass his class with a good grade. He overloaded us with prerecorded lectures instead of lecturing us himself through things like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. All in all, he is a nice person, but the teaching methods he uses were bad.
Had him for a lab. Good lectures. Very dry sense of humor. He's a tough grader and gave no feedback on anything we got wrong, though. Labs have inconsistent workload. Some take 5 hours, some take <30min
Grades out of 700pts: HW: 100; Quizzes:100; 3 Tests: 100 each; Final:100; ACS:100. 560/700 needed for an A; 6/60 or so got A's with 1/4 dropping. Long and hard tests with not much time to take them, he anticipates the class not finishing. Entertaining lecturer but lots of work. Very anal about showing work. Partial credit for everything and some EC
Had Dr H for 1211, 2734, and 4744. Great professor and a great guy. Study your lecture notes (know your notes like the back of your hand) because that is what he tests on. Tests are hard to finish in time, but that is why he curves (80+ is an A) and offers extra credit. I'll always recommend Dr H's class for any chem student
Took in in-person class, and all the homework, quizzes, and exams are all free response and extremely difficult. I heard good things from his online class but none of those were expressed in the in person. Never really explained anything, and was very confusing all semester. Would not take him unless on the online class. He also isn't very helpful.
Great professor! He cares about his students and will help with any of the content. His exams are difficult but he gives partial credit. There is a lot of homework but there is a bonus homework opportunity. It takes a lot of effort but I would definitely take him again!
Dr. Herbert is a real teacher and cares about your success. Put in the work and you will do well in this class. Engaging lectures. Exams are very difficult but the grading scale is curved, 80+ is an A. Multi-chapter quizzes and paper homework. Offers extra credit for extra homework problems. I would recommend Dr Herbert for any chemistry course.
Herbert is a great professor to take if you actually want to learn the material to use down the line. If you are just required to take the class, it's a lot of work to keep up. He has a strange grading system and makes the tests and quizzes hard, and assigns a pretty large amount of homework.
I would not take this course with Herbert again! He is a super sweet guy however he does not do a good job explaining the material in class. Everything is handwritten (his handwriting isn't legible most of the time). The tests can be complicated and he will ask questions containing material that he never mentioned. Just don't take him.
Dr. Herbert is a great chemistry professor. I would highly recommend him for 1211. His lectures are good and he works through tough example problems in class that prepare you for homework and exams. It's important to put in the effort because he will notice if you are not trying and from my experience that is what annoys him the most.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is the worst professor I had by far. His tests and quizzes are so difficult compared to his lectures and hw he assigns. He does not help students. When I went to his office hours, he was very discouraging and not helpful at all. I experienced two close family death this semester, and he did not have any sympathy whats so ever.
4 words... do not take him He is the worst and most rude professor I have taken. Does not care for his students whats so ever.
Do not take him. There is way better professors than Dr. Herbert. This professor gave me absolute hell, he was the worst.
Dr. Herbert is a good teacher. Be warned- this isn't the kind of class that you can skip and do well. Every lecture is important, and material isn't on D2L since all lectures are handwritten. Tough content and grader, but a big curve (80-100=A). He is strict and blunt, but if you show that you are putting in effort, he will help you succeed!
0/10!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. He does NOT care about his students at all. He loves to brag about how difficult his class is and how students drop. You will spend 4-5 hours MINIMUM ON about 60-70 HANDWRITTEN HOMEWORK PROBLEMS WEEKLY! And he only grades 11 problems out of ALL THE WORK. INSANE!!! HIS NAME IS A BAD TASTE IN ALL MOUTHS. NO GO
Grades based off how well the class does, does curves, 80+ is an A 65-79 B, extra credit, allowed me to get points back for something I had erased on the exam. Makes a lot of jokes, old guy but great professor. Will definitely take him again for any future chem course.
Short and simple. Do NOT take this class. An absolute disgrace of a professor.
Corky, and fun to listen to. BUT, probably the most difficult class I've ever taken. His handwriting is VERY sloppy and if you miss class their are no PowerPoints to recap information on. Tests are all open ended and INCREDIBLY difficult. Be prepared to work your ass off and still be screwed. Definitely a challenge, good guy though!
Herb is a great guy. He's super funny and genuinely seems to care about his students. His class is just insanely difficult. I spent 6+ hours a week studying for this class and still barely got above a C, and I only passed one exam the entire semester. Be prepared to constantly study, and ASK QUESTIONS. He'll elaborate and rewrite things as needed.
Writing this before finals, grade is borderline. Great professor, but be prepared to teach yourself. Tests are ALL MATH and open ended. Definitely the most difficult class I have taken. Tons of homework and very little extra credit. Class of 30+, he shows rankings, only 3 with an A as of rn. Beware, BUT if you like the challenge you'll learn a lot.
I had Dr. Herbert for my first semester my freshman year, and I loved his class. His lectures are engaging, and he explains the topic in a way that is easy to understand. He is always willing to help with homework if you don't understand it. It can be a hard course, but as long as you listen to the lectures and do the homework, you'll be fine.
Dr. Herbert is old school and only uses white board writing and ELMO light display during lectures, but he is amazing. Show up to office hours and he will be happy to help you with whatever you don't understand. He truly does care about your success. You do have to actually try but I'm pretty sure it's like that in any chem class.
I loved his style of teaching. Making constant jokes and analogies really kept me interested in the lectures. I also felt like he actually cared and wanted me to succeed in his course. With that being said, his class is very difficult if you don't take time to study and truly learn each concept. Definitely my favorite professor I have had so far.
He is very old school but I love it, he really makes the material interesting & enjoyable. He does a very gracious curve which I don't think I would pass this class without. Chem is very hard but he really tries his best to help you out. Definitely recommend him, although the homework sets were kind of insane.
I had Dr.Herberts 1211 during a summer short session that was 5 weeks and it was extremely hard. The class moves at a breakneck pace and there was a lot of homework (think 14-18 hours a week), however despite this it ended up being my favorite class up to this point. Dr.Herbert is an extremely passionate and caring teacher.
Oh Dr. Herbert. This class almost made me give up my major but his attitude and passion helped tremendously. No, I am not a great test taker but he sat me down and really laid it on me that my efforts aren't for nothing. He believes in fairness. And if I could say more in this text box I would because he is honestly a great guy. I recommend
This is supposed to be a freshman level class and this is the most difficult class i've ever taken. Herbert is a nice guy but is so unorganized. Awful handwriting yet everything is written on the board. As someone who attended office hours, tutoring, and read all of the chapters, I still got a C. Highest grade in the class was an 83. DO NOT TAKE!!
Professor Herbert hands-down one of the best professors I have had- yes I am saying that even when finishing the course with barely a C. His lectures engage your attention with short but funny-side comments. With this being said chemistry is extremely hard. Prepare to put LOTS of work in. Did this class dual enrolled so if I can do it, you can too!
I would not recommend this class for anyone not majoring in Chemistry, only because this dude does not mess around with his content, and you will absolutely struggle if you're not passionate about the topic. That being said, he's a deeply interesting teacher who clearly cares about his students. If I hadn't change my major I would take him again.
Dr. Herbert is a really great professor and he teaches tough chemistry concepts very well. His class isn't easy, but his grades are curved so anything about an 80 is an A. I enjoyed the challenge though and I would recommend him for any high speed chemistry students.
Prof. Herbert's class is challenging, but he makes the material engaging with his old-school teaching style and constant jokes. Attend office hours, use the textbook, and try unstuck AI for extra study prep - it really helped me grasp the concepts.
Dr. H is a sweet and kind person, but a hard professor to understand. It was very hard for me to understand what he was saying during lectures, because he zooms in on one topic without covering the overall picture. He is very accessible outside of lecture, he truly does care about his students. Do not take him unless you are ready to WORK HARD!
I did not do that well in his class but that is mainly my fault. He is a great teacher and is willing to work with the students to make sure they understand the material. His tests come from his homework assignments and problems he does in class. He gives a lot of chances for extra credit and gives study guides for all his exams
He definitely has an old school teaching style, but a great professor! He has a different grading system, 82 and above is an A and 65-81 is a B, I believe. He tends to pull questions out of the textbook. It takes a lot of effort to get an A in his class. If this class is not required for your major take a different teacher.
If you are a first year student I would not recommend. I love Dr Herbert as a person, he is funny and kind, but I do not like his teaching. He is very old school, everything is on the whiteboard, he doesn't post anything on D2L. Only resources are his notes and the textbook which I rewrote all of my notes from and still did terrible on his tests.
went through a rough time while taking his class and he understood, but 100% relied on the textbook to teach us. and also could barely read his handwriting, although he would rewrite and apologize if it was not legible. nice guy but not a great teacher
