he is a very good teacher. the tests are easy as long as you paid attention in class. he has a lot knowledge and loves what he teachers. You wont get bored in his class. Take him, he's so easy!
He is an awesome teacher! He makes what I would normally consider boring (like economics) fun! He is a very creative teacher! As long as you do the reading (and warning: there is a lot) you should do well on the open book tests! There are only 2, and one paper. I highly recommend taking him if you need a history course. And he is kind of cute, too!
Honestly one of the best history profs i have ever had. He is really helpful and he is willing to meet with you to discuss papers etc. By meeting him, i have gotten A's on both of my papers. His lectures are really good and the class is easy. Two exams and 3 papers arent bad at all. You just have to pay attention to his lectures. would take him aga
Very good teacher.
He's really good at explaining things, and he makes the material interesting.
Very good teacher, very easy to understand. I would suggest taking his class.
I've always hated history until this year. Mr. Jarvis is an awesome teacher. He's enthusiastic, nice, and really cares about his students. His assignments aren't bad either. I've barely read the book and I've passed all of the tests so far. I would highly recommend him and I would definitely take him again!!
Very good teacher. His assignments are not that hard, and he tells you exactly what to study for the exams. Interesting class. I reccomend him.
He made the class seem a lot less boring than it could've been because 1.)He was very enthusiastic, helpful, interesting, etc., etc. & 2.)He was very fun to look at. =)
Younger prof. Class doesn't seem hard until test time. Study guides list 20 things you need to know and tests give you 5 of them. You basically then write as much as you can on those five. No multiple choice, t/f, etc. However, easy to work with and easy to follow in class.
fair and entertaining at times..
Personally I thought the class was just ok. The lectures were boring and seemed to take forever. Somewhat time intensive compared to the other 100 level classes I've taken. But at the end of the day he's a nice guy and means well.
Jarvis is a nice guy but the class is really boring. It is impossible to get an A in the class. Whatever you write on the exams... he always wants more!
He is a great prof! He is willing to help anytime.
Brad is great!!!! He really gets the class to engage in his lectures and tries his best not to make them your typical boring History lectures. Brad also gives you plenty of chances to make extra credit points to earn your A. I definitely recommend taking him for any class that he teaches.
History major here saying he is a great new teacher to SVSU. I recommend taking him, but be ready to read a lot of books. If you write well, you will do fine, all essay exams.
Prof. Jarvis is an excellent teacher, and I recommend him to anyone. I thought he assigned too much reading, but they are relative to understanding the material he is teaching. Personally, I found him to be a tougher grader when it came to homework assignments and exams, but he is awesome and makes class go by super fast. Im taking him again!
This guy is an idiot. He doesn't care about the students and expects them to know just as much as him. His tests are ridiculous (write def. of terms and an essay which is 60 points). Group project sucks and is not a fair grader even though he seems to be. Will NEVER take him again!
He is a nice guy and tries to make the class fun. But he is pretty unclear on what he expects from you on assignments, and grades WAY too harshly. He basically told our class it is almost impossible to get an A. Make sure you talk to him before you turn in any major assignments, or you will be pretty surprised by your grade!
Brad was a great teacher! I enjoyed his class. He is a very understanding person and willing to help. The last day of class is really fun as well. I would recommend him!
Really nice. Dont expect to get out early though. slides always get put on vspace. test arent too bad as long as you pay attention and study. Pretty simple to get a B in the class.
I really like this Proff...I took this class with another instructor and they are like night and day. I wouldn't say an A is easy but it's not hard to obtain. This is one of those classes I hate to miss.
I have taken Brad twice and loved working with him. He demands quality work, but give you chances to make up the work if you didn't do as well as you'd planned. His door is open for students and I would strongly encourage any one who takes him to visit. He is very knowledgeable and can teach you a lot if you let him.
Brad is a great guy and an even better professor. He does not hand out A's to everyone, you have to earn it but he grades fairly. The final is a group project and is worth 30% of your grade and the other main portion is a paper which coincides with it. Extremely helpful and gives great notes/lectures. Would highly recommend
Jarvis is a great teacher. He is mostly lecture, but he gives you notes online to print off. He explains everything, and if you ever need help he's MORE than happy to talk with you. If you have a problem with your papers be sure to talk with him. I hated history and was AWEFUL at it, but i wound up with an A in his class, Take his class.
Knows what he's talking about and very good at keeping attention in class, never boring. No tests at all for this course!!
Great teacher, that knows alot about the material. He expects alot out of the students but offers his help whenever you need it.
The way he runs the class is kind of hard to get into, but he's pretty cool and really fair.
Brad is by far the best History teacher at SVSU. He is extremely helpful and will work in ways to clarify things for his students. Utilizing his office hours is essential to do well on his papers but if you work on his suggestions an A is attainable. Take him... he's awesome!
He is very nice and helpful. Tests are kind of easy. He is strict when it comes to grading, especially the essays.
This prof. is pretty cool. He is helpful and willing to take time to do what he can for you. Three papers on three novels due for this clas though. Tests are easy and powerpoint is on line to make studying easy. If you want an easy a take this guy. Attendence is part of the grade.
Good professor, well-structured class. Exams are very easy. Papers are easy, but make sure you use the books a lot or he will mark you down. Overall, good easy class.
Great class! The lectures were very well structured and informative. There were many opportunities for extra credit. His paper grading can be tough, especially if you don't utilize all textbooks. Overall a great prof. I would definitely take again.
He is a very good professor and explains what he is looking for in the papers. He is also extremely helpful.
Professor Jarvis makes his class fun by doing random activities at times. He has a very fun personality but he often hides this when he lectures. During class he reads of power points and you take notes. His class is pretty easy as long as you do the study guides he gives to you before a test and complete all the assignments given.Overall hes sweet
History is not my favorite subject, but Professor Jarvis made history enjoyable. He is a really good professor and I enjoyed his lectures a lot. The class discussions were the best. No tests or exams. Just a lot of papers, but it is not too bad. I really enjoyed having him as a professor and I would take him again if I had the choice to.
This professor is a really good professor, granted the lectures were sometimes boring due to his rambling. But Brad Jarvis is a great history professor and knows what he's talking about. Papers are fairly easy and the exams were only slightly difficult map-wise. Great class.
An awesome professor, would definitely recommend. Has clear and organized powerpoints. Challenges students to do their best on exams and on the paper. Enjoyable class and learned a lot. Made the Revolutionary War a great subject to study!
Get ready for acute & irreversible writer's cramp as well as reading until your eyeballs bleed out. You will not ever read a more sickeningly boring & repetitive assembly of books, or experience such agony while attending a lecture. Be sure to take your vitamin R before dragging yourself off to this tantalizing hour & too many minutes class.
Jarvie (as we called him) is a really great and passionate historian. The assigned books are boring but the homework only a 1 pg. summary over the previous weeks' reading and an 8 page paper. He grades extremely hard on the summaries but there is a lot of extra credit. Class discussions are sometimes awkward. Jarvis is a professor you should take
He was a great teacher. He offered lots of help and extra credit. He really made sure you understood the material. There was a lot of work to do, but you know in the begining of the term. There is plenty of time to get everything done. Has a real passion for what he is teaching.
Kept things light and interesting, but his tests were a lot harder than he let on. I've taken many of essay tests and his were the hardest. Typically a B average student and couldn't get over a C+. Papers were easy and he was very helpful if you needed it on papers. Go to class and read the material or you'll be hurting.
He is a great teacher. I highly recommend him. He was very helpful. The tests are all essay and take a long time to write most people run out of time so be prepared. The paper is fun and done with a group. He was a very nice guy and seemed interested in the subject matter. He knows what he's talking about.
He's a very fun, fairly easy teacher who knows his subjects very well and is very interested in them. His class isn't hardly boring at all, seeing as he'll make jokes and fumble over himself and just laugh with you. I took him last semester, never cracked book once..good grade. and am taking him again this semester..good if you are a history major!
I really enjoying Dr. Jarvis' class. He really tries to make the material interesting (group activities, movies, etc.). The assignments and tests were not too bad. He gives LOTS of extra credit opportunities, you just have to be willing to earn them. PAY ATTENTION and TAKE NOTES in class and you will be fine. I'd take Dr. Jarvis again, for sure!
He is honestly my favorite professor I've ever had. I had him for Hist 311 and did not want it to end, so I just had to take him for 100B! He is really enthusiastic about American history and really cares that his students do well and is very helpful. I recommend him to everyone!
I love Jarvis, he is definitely one of the best History teachers at SVSU. He made the content fun and interesting and I learned a lot. Reading is really important and he assigns around 4 books to read. If you take notes and do the work, you will get a good grade.
TAKE HIM. I absolutely HATE history and I was put in this class. I absolutely love it. He is an awesome professor and makes things extremely easy to comprehend. His tests aren't too difficult if you pay attention during lectures and keep on top of the reading. He is very willing to assist you on anything you need help with.
He takes attendance every day/it's part of your grade. Lectures are very interesting. Exams are a bit tough but he always writes feedback in the margins, telling what he is looking for. He offers some extra credit. There's a lot of reading for the class/4 books are required and he asks you questions about all of them on the exams. I loved his class
Loved Jarvis! Great professor willing to help students. There is alot of reading and to get good grades advise you do it!! He tells you whats on the exam and to study for! Will take Jarvis again :)
I really enjoyed this class. It was a lot of reading but it was made interesting by the lectures. I did not take any foundation classes prior to taking this class. Do not get behind on the readings!! His tests are not easy but he does give extra credit opportunities. I really enjoyed this class and would take more of his classes.
He was very helpful. He read and wrote comments on my final paper before it was due, which was great! 3 exams, a bibliography, and a final 5pg paper. The material was boring at times, but he made it interesting! Would take him again for history at SVSU!
Best professor I have had thus far in my 4 years here at SVSU! Makes learning fun and exciting! We even have some competitive team reviews in class before exams! It's a blast! Lots of reading, but it is interesting stuff! "All-Essay" exams can make your hand tired, but overall not that bad if you've read the material and attended lectures. I would Highly recommend Dr. Jarvis!
Dr. Jarvis is amazing. I loved this class, it was interesting and fun. The class is overall is not that hard if you put a lot of work into it. Don't get behind in the readings, that will hurt you in the papers that are assigned to the readings. He is very helpful.Overall I enjoyed this class and would recommend him for other History classes.
Loved this class, I wish he would teach all of the History classes. Keep reading in his class. Had great reviews before exams and made them fun. Very challenging class, but he was very interesting and I learned so much in this class. Will look for more of his classes - Highly recommended.
I loved Michigan History because of Dr. Jarvis! It makes everything fun and interesting! I will be taking his Revolutionary War history class soon! Take your history classes with Jarvis, you will not regret it!
Loved Dr. Jarvis. Great, passionate professor who entertains nearly as much as he educates. His course was designed around having the students conclude whether the Revolution was a radical act, with two books offering opposing views. Such a fascinating approach to the material. Plus, he's a Dr. Who and Big Lebowski fan! Can't ask for more!
Professor Jarvis is a great guy. I learned a lot and was always interested in his lectures. Probably the toughest teacher I've had but still enjoyable. I would definitely recommend him.
He's energetic, humorous, & smart professor, but his assignments and tests are really hard. Assignments are 2-3 page essays every week and tests are short answers & essays. Even after reading and giving it my all, I'm still just averaging (which rarely happens). His assignments and tests are tough, but his lectures, I can sit all day and listen to.
I don't like history but he made it interesting. He assigns 20 essays but you only need to complete 6, the rest are optional to get a better grade. He is very friendly and goes out of his way to help you if you put in the effort. He lets you know exactly what he is looking for in assignments and exams.
Great teacher.
He's a good prof. BUT his lectures are long, you must be in class to pass. Exams are hard, you MUST be in class to pass!! Attendance has a big effect on your grade! He does give plenty of chances to make up grades, but there's not much room for extra credit. This is a class where doing work and being there is imperative.
Professor Jarvis is a great teacher! His grading on essays are a little tough, but he provides a lot of good feedback. If I had to I would take him again, and I think he is kinda cute!
AMAZING! Loved the class. Really knows the material. Lots of reading, some shorter papers covering readings. Made Michgian history very interesting! Pulls in own information to help in lecture. Would definitely take him again.
Really knows his information and is very interesting. He also is an EXTREMELY hard grader. I handed in a rough draft, got it back with HIS suggestions, changed it exactly how he wanted it, and still only got an 89%. He also assigns lots of busy work. Lastly his ppts were very disorganized which made it hard to follow. Wouldn't want to take again.
great professor great class
Professor Jarvis is fantastic. Very easy points, and our final paper was supposed to be 25 pages, but I only turned in 10 and still received a B! I highly recommend him, especially if you need to get your Category 9 out of the way.
Great professor! He seems to really care about his students and is one of my favorites! Pretty easy class. Each chapter you fill out a table & SA questions. No exams, but a there's 10 pg paper that he allows you to resubmit after he grades it. Participation not counted as a grade. He's always willing to help if you need it. Loved him and the class!
Absolutely fantastic professor, would 100% take him over and over again. Great lectures, never fails to keep my attention. You must do the reading though, if you don't do the reading you will not succeed. Highly recommend this professor.
Dr. Jarvis was not my favorite prof. He ran the class like it was an upper level, history major class. Not a CI course, but A LOT of writing. The averages on discussion board posts were often 3-4/10. He is an incredibly unnecessarily tough grader, and the highest grade I received on a post or quiz was a 9/10. Sounds fine but he marks you down a lot
I like Prof. Jarvis, I had an online class, and his voice was nice and not annoying like some professors. We had usually two assignments due a week, and required a lot of writing, however we had no tests or exams. The quizzes took a while, but they are easy to expand on without reading the material. He is easily available if you have questions.
Professor Jarvis made history very interesting! There is online homework that is due every week along with a weekly online quiz. Three exams throughout the semester along with a 1000 word paper that you have the majority of the semester to do. Offers extra credit only a handful of times throughout the semester. Study notes & PowerPoints!
Personally, the lectures could be very dry at times but a lot of the assignments were pretty straight forward and easy. A lot of material is covered on the exams, which can be pretty tricky. One 5 page paper due at the end of the semester. See him frequently for help with writing the paper and you will do better
I absolutely hated US history prior to this class, but Ive grown to like it a bit more based on his teaching style and the material. The textbook is online and there are assignments every week online that are based off of the readings. Theyre not hard and as long as you follow the directions youll get points. Some EC. I wish I could take him again
This professor has been the worst teacher I have came across here at SVSU. He is a very harder grader and does not give much detail on what he expects.
Brad Jarvis is the best professor I have ever seen. He is very inspirational.
Brad Jarvis is the best professor I have ever seen. He helps everyone. Although he is god his lectures can be dry. Other than that he is amazing
I wouldn't say he's a tough grader, but you have to work for an A. He doesn't give study guides, but I felt well-prepared for the exams and did well. There is A LOT of homework on Globalyceum every week. Usually 5-8 assignments. I like the way he teaches, but the homework is a little much. I wasn't a fan of the Globalyceum website either.
He is a nice professor and he explains things pretty well. However, he makes you work for your grade in every single thing you submit in the class. It honestly was the hardest class I have ever taken and I worked my butt off for my grade. There is a lot of reading and he marks down for just about any mistakes he can find. Good Luck!
So cool and funny. Doesn't make you participate in class but it's better if you do. Interesting lectures. Would for sure take him again.
Professor Jarvis is a great guy and great professor. Very easy going and caring for the students. His homework on Globalyceum is graded somewhat tough but tests make up majority of the grade. Tests arent very hard as long as you prepare smartly and listen to what he says in lectures. Overall his class is very easy, anyone could get a B or more.
Brad is a very nice person, and very good at what he does. But for me I have ADHD, and I can't remember stiff very well, and it hurt my grade a lot and he would NOT let me redo it no matter what. NEVER answers emails, so go to his office hours.
The course was too much work, and I usually ended up getting disappointed after he graded everything maybe because he is too picky with the answers. It was difficult to understand his feedback, although the grade criteria were clear and extensive. Take him only if you are ready to work for the grade, definitely not an easy A.
The class has been made overly complicated for the level it is at, the papers and Globalyceum written assignements are graded very harshly, but the exams are relatively easy. I learned a lot of interesting information, but my grade unfortunately doesn't get to reflect that.
Amazing guy. 10/10. He even says in class I know you have other classes and this class doesnt need to stress you. Really helpful and nice. With online he made it easy for students.
My class was online, this professor uses an online platform that includes the textbook and you must get that because it's what quizzes and assignments are on. He grades the discussions a little hard but quizzes are fairly easy! Definitely read the chapters!
Obviously knows a lot but takes grading too seriously. I put in hours on tests and weekly projects and still only receive 87% on assignments. Looking at class's grade averages shows around 50% on quizzes and projects. Would be a lot more interesting if I wasn't so worried about passing even though I work hard
He was not clear about how he would grade things. Everything was worth 10 points, (quizzes, essays, assignments) but the amount of work did not match up. I would write 3+ pages for an essay and get a 7.5/10 and all of his comments would be very vague and inconsistent.
This was my second time taking Brad. Hes a real nice guy and easy to work with. He grades tough on the primary sources, and reading essays. Be prepared to write a large amount with lots of sources in order to get over an 85% on them. His tests were graded easier. You will need to study and watch his extra lectures to grasp material. Overall good.
Good class, good professor.
He is a very good teacher but a very very tough grader. He gives you some advice from your essays that you write all the time in this class. If you are not so good at writing essays this class will be tough for you. He doesn't respond to emails and takes days to get back with you.
I will not take Professor Jarvis again. He was horrible, was too many books to rent/buy (four books). He did not care that the bookstore was behind and I missed an essay, I got no credit for that. Never answered emails very fast and all assignment were only 10pts each, even 800 minimum word essays. Essays all the time and feedback is horribly.
Dr. Jarvis is great! He is very passionate about what he teaches and puts a lot of effort into making sure his students have a good experience. He cares greatly about his students as well and explains the material in a way that makes it easy to understand. Would take again!
Jarvis is a good professor. Heavy on the assignments and a TON of reading. It's hard to keep up with. Not a fan of his grading system, as everything is only worth 10 points, but not a big deal. He will work with you when you need help. Need to be good at time management for this class.
This class was good besides a lot of Quizzes and Essay assignments. Everything in his class is worth 10 points. For the Essays you need to have a lot of textual evidence and know how to support the quote and not leaving it freestanding. He is really good about getting back to you via email and helpful if you don't quite understand something.
History is definitely not a strong suit of mine, but I did pretty good in this class. Your grade will be made of up 3 essays, 3 exams, and your weekly "textbook assignment". The essays and exams are both due at the same time for the 3 time periods. The "textbook" is online, and you will need it. He also takes attendance during class.
Amazing teacher if history isn't your strong suit. Assignments are easy to complete. He gives you a study guide that shows exactly what will be on each exam, it just doesn't include the multiple-choice questions which are easy to answer if you review the reading quizzes. Very easy class to do well in, and the lectures aren't too terrible.
He literally makes things so much harder than they need to be for no reason. His grading is unclear and inconsistent. what he expects is also never clear, seems very agitated if you have a question.
Highly recommend! Especially if you aren't a history major and need this as a gen-ed. Definitely pick this as a communication intensive because it's so easy. I'd recommend hist110! students to get a jump start on the final paper because it's the hardest assignment and you can resubmit it as many times as you'd like.
It is easy to do well with him, but very very difficult to get an A in his class. There are 15 essay assignments, but only the highest 3 actually count which is nice. He only lets you use this Gloybalyceum website as a source, which is the most sketchy, untrustworthy source I have ever seen and it is annoying to use.
Personally, I would rather to read a physical book over online course that I paid for history class. I hate a lot of reading and watch videos of the random teachers talking about history. It's so boring, but at least you can study quizzes because they will be on each exam so you will pass easy. Professor's lectures are okay, I guess.
Dr. Jarvis is a great professor. While this class involved a lot of writing at the last minute, if you plan it out you will be ok. The readings can sometimes be long, but bearable. This class made you learn something in a way that was fair to all students. He does make you participate in class for a grade, however.
Professor Jarvis offered an interesting perspective in his few lecture videos but most of the work was done on Globalyceum. Even though you can drop many assignments, Professor Jarvis grades harshly and most assignments are only out of ten points. I would say this class is quite difficult.
This class was online for me and not too much work. Reading quizzes and a 500 word essay every week but he only took the highest essay score for each part of the class (3 total). Exams were all written and needed to included sources which made them quite time consuming, but not impossible. He gave feedback on writings but definitely a tough grader.
Professor Jarvis has a very specific grading system, but if you stay on top of the heavy workload and use tools like Unstuckstudy for study prep, you can do well. Attendance is mandatory, so be prepared to engage.
Professor Jarvis was a great professor. All hw assignments are online and fairly easy. Exams are kind of hard if you don't prepare yourself enough. Extra credit opportunities during exam reviews. Exams: multiple choice, knowing terms (who/what, where, when, & hist significance), short answer, and a map. There are also essays, but they're not hard.
Professor Jarvis is an amazing professor. as long as you show up to class and put effort into your work, its an easy A.
As a history major, I really enjoyed Jarvis's class. They're almost entirely lecture-based, and he moves through material quickly, but I appreciated that. Most of your grade in this class is based on exams, papers and quizzes, though the quizzes were graded on participation not accuracy. Plenty of extra credit opportunities, if you put in the work.
You have three assignments a week, which if you keep up you can move ahead. This class was easy, fun, and I would take it again.
