If you like literature, I mean, really really like it then take this class because you will love it, but if you don't really like it all that much and you are just trying to get a lit or humanities credit out of the way, don't take this class... It's just too much work.
Difficult and harsh grader, rude, and could care less for his students.
This guy is never satisfied with the level of work performed by students. One almost feels as though he intentionally grades hard not for the bennefit of the class but to feel better about himself.
Mr Sealy is a good professor. He just expects you to work and put forth effort. If you are looking for an easy A, then don't take his class. He's fair, but he's not a pushover. If you only put in minimal effort, don't expect a good grade. Lot's of work to do, but it will help you in the long run. Be ready to read too.
wouldnt take this class if he was teaching
Mr. Seally has been a a great teacher. Of course it's not an easy A. This is college, not high school. If you really want to learn how to write and essay and form an appreciation for literature, take his class.
The absolute worst teacher i have ever had. I worked my ass off and still failed. He doesnt answer questions and thinks all his students are dumb. Would drop this class immediately!
He is definately a teacher I wouldn't take. I worked my ass off and even had a writer and another teacher look over my essays and he still was harsh. He is not clear with what he wants and if you don't like reading off the wall books don't take him.
AMAZING! Definitely not an easy A, but I learned more about writing in his class than I had throughout all of high school. I took an elearning class, we were expected to write something on our discussion everyday, but as long as you said something new it was easy. High expectations, but if he can tell you put in the effort he is very helpful.
Hardest teacher i've ever had, there is a reason he has a 1.3 easiness rating, He expected almost daily participation from the online class I took and he grades papers very harshly, I would spend days on my essays and had them reviewed by 3-5 people each time and usually didnt pull better than 75-80, althought once I did get a 84!RIDICULOUSLY HARD!
Hard teacher, but definitely worth taking! You'll retain information to utilize at a later date. Ex- military, and don't let the slew of sweater-vest fool you; the man is a brick house!
Took online so really dont know how the teacher is in class.
My biggest complaint was the amount of reading we had to do. I think we read 3 novels through the class, which would have been fine if it was the only class I was taking. He grades hard, but lets you know where you're improving and what can be done to do better next time.
This is English 101 class, the guy acted like it was advanced and we were going to be English majors! He was horrible at helping with questions and never gave feedback for why grades were given. He even tells you he has a 40% passing rate in his class! Unless this is your only class and your going to be an English major, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
I don't know how this man has a half smile overall. He's a complete ****. If you want to be completely miserable for three months take him and even though I got a decent grade. He' s dark, preachy, and talks down to you. If I had to describe Sealy in one word it would be SATAN!!!
I took this class a while (9yr) ago, but Sealy still remains in my memory as one of the best instructors I've had. The class is tough--he won't let you slack. If that doesn't suit you (or if you want to be treated like a 1st grader), skip him. If you care about getting something out of the class and being pushed to your best, take his class.
Tells you exactly what you need to do to pass the class, what you need to read and when you need it read by. Lots of reading, and do your journals because that is the easiest part of the grade. Don't get up in class to leave unless you have told him and he doesn't like tardy people. I liked his class, however. Watch your grammar!
a little over the top
In a word - ARROGANT. I passed with an A, but spent a ridiculous amount of time on class-about 4 hours a day, 7 days a week. WAY conservative - one right-leaning student said "health care reform" and was blasted. Online class not very well organized - instructions and due dates not clear and located in different places. 2/3 class dropped out.
I took an online class from Sealy, and compared to the other professors I've had he was really organized. It was definitely a hard class, but I learned a lot and now English 102 EASY!!! If you can pass Sealy's class at CBC the rest will be easy after that. He does seem somewhat arrogant, but online he lays out the entire quarter, you can work ahead.
His work load is huge, the essays that you write are mostly your opinion but if he doesnt agree with it he will fail your paper. We started with 30 people and ended with 7 because so many people failed out. I endedup with one the highest grades in class and it was only a 1.6.
I wouldn't say that he is the hardest teacher on campus, some of his assignments online can be done without even reading. His essays on the other hand, can be pretty tough. He is a member of the comma police, and if he disagrees with your statements he makes sure to tell you and at times docks your grade because of it. Overall he's ok.
Wow, do not take this teacher if you plan on keeping up your GPA. Before his class I had a 3.95 until he gave me a 2.9. The thing is that I averaged my finals at a 95% and essays at a 81%, and still somehow mysteriously got a B. Really upset and baffling. Terrible waste of money. Stick with a reasonable teacher.
I turned in a rough draft & he didn't give me any other instructions but "I suggest starting from scratch." You have to "propose" topics & you get a poor grade just if he doesn't like it. Class average on essays 3/4 of the quarter in is 61%. Will take off 0.5 of the 4.0 grade of your essay for not including your outline. It's his way or the highway
Mr. Sealy is really amazing. His class is hard but, he is really fun to listen to because he is so enthusiastic and I have learned a lot in his class. The key is you have to commit to doing well. If you are on a full schedule or are only a little interested then you may want to consider an easier teacher.
Took his class online, one of the worst experiences in college ever. His instructions are as clear as mud, no matter what you propose for papers he rejects and doesn't tell you what you need to change. He is incredibly conservatively biased and if you write something he doesn't agree with politically he will mark you down.
Do NOT take this class. It is the worst class with the worst teacher. His grading doesn't make any sense at all and on essays he doesn't tell you what you did wrong at all so there is no way to improve them.
I took this course online and I found it very easy, you just need to stay on top of what is due on what days. Only 3 essays, a handful of very short quizzes, and mostly discussion posts. Your discussions aren't graded on if he thinks you're right or not, it's how clearly you state your findings. Overall, a very good teacher and online class.
Well structured. All whiners need to know this is not high school. He demands full attention and respect. Learned a lot with 100% effort. Turn in your work!
Best online instructor I've taken. Class is very structured - be prepared to work. The reading materials and assignments were engaging and designed to make you think. I've never had an English teacher actually "teach" me anything, but I feel I walked away a better writer because of his feedback. One of the best teachers I've had - but again: not EZ
I took this class online. Make sure you read the books! If you don't you will not pass because every essay he does has to do with the books. This was a very hard class for me.
I had Mr. Sealy for an American Literature class. His class is not easy, but he tells you what you need to do and improve. I hate english but love his class. If you want a good grade and will work for one, he is a great teacher. One of the only english classes I have come out of actually learning something. I would reccommend him!
If he has a good class, he grades on a curve. So be nice. He likes army discipline in his class, his quizes are not worth much, but hard. For example, you have to know the year the short story takes place in by looking at hints such as gas stations... I'm not a big fan of history. He loves literature and has interesting lectures.
His class was pretty easy online. All you had to do was make sure that you read the books and wrote detaled discussion posts. The work was all fairly easy and Mr. Sealy was a fairly easy grader.
Do not take his class online!! It is extremely hard and all you read are futuristic scifi books. he grades papers very unfailry. Don't take his class unless you plan on doing a lot of work. In his syllabus he clearly states that only 60% of his students actually complete his class. I do not recommend him.
VERY HARD GRADER. Class overall wasn't too bad, however he was a tough grader and wasn't helpful on how to improve. Personally I regretted taking this class. Was not impressed with his online style of teaching.
This instructor is the worst. Took his class online. He graded me down in three different areas for the same thing, on 1 essay. Not helpful at all when it came to fixing mistakes. Read the books and write about it. Learn how to do it properly by yourself. Post monday - friday online and if you miss one, it will show in your grade big time.
Good instructor, but like some college professors has a hard time understanding some people haven't had much education prior to CBC, which is really not encouraging for someone starting off.
Hot, but needs to loosen UPPPPP!
For an online class this teacher gives you an unrealistic amount of work to get done if you are taking 3 classes at once. You seriously will have something due everyday or every other day whether it's a quiz, essay, discussion, assignment, essay critique. He also makes everything due at 8am the date it's due which is stupid.
He expects a lot of work for an online community college class, but reading 3 novels over 11 weeks is not out of the ordinary. I've had to read 9 books in 15 weeks for a class before. This is college. Check the schedule and do what you can in advance
Hes a very harsh grader. Expect you to be a professional writer. Loved the books that he assigned. Wasn't very helpful when asking about what I did wrong in the essay. Never has an input in your essay, so you don't know what you did wrong. Tests are easy if you read the books.
First of all, he expects everyone to be perfect writers; if you're not doing well he does nothing to help and is nothing short of condescending. Secondly, he explains assignments very thoroughly, but then grades you off of things not explained in the assignment, which affects your grade horribly. He is rude and is not worth the money or time.
You learn a lot from him if you show up and do your work, he's a great professor but a hard grader
I learned a lot from this class, but he has a poor attitude towards students. Feedback on essays or questions you have asked come off as very condescending. I've told many students to avoid this instructor due to that fact that he will make you feel like an idiot. It is unfortunate that he is incapable of connecting to students in a positive way.
He acts like his is your only class, will give you so much work that just keeping up is an amazing feat. when he grades nothing pleases him. I have written essays had my college friends and the tutor at the college edit them and still only recieve a B, and that's only when he gives you enough time to write an essay and edit it! Do not take him!
No help whatsoever. His feedback didn't make any sense, he was extremely rude when I went in and asked him questions. He'not there to help, he's there to get paid. He thinks he teaches a class at Harvard and that his is the only one that matters. I'd rather work at McDonald's than have to deal with him again. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Very tough grader. Asked to meet with him for help and no response. He thinks his class is the only one you have and that you going to be a professional writer. Only about 60% complete his class with an average of 2.4. Wouldn't recommend taking him.
He is very detailed and to the point. Follow the rules ready everything and you will do well. Reach out if you need help or clarification. His feedback can come off abrasive but he is right and my writing is better after having taken this class.
Feedback for essays had to be requested, no constructive criticism
Attendance is mandatory to an online class! He is rude and annoying. he kept sending me emails about how to do assignments when I already knew what to do. Sealy will make feel stupid and he is not very good on feedback ion your essays.
Read and do the work, no problem. Essays are another story. Essays are worth 60% of total grade. He is tough, and that will make or break you.
He has high expectations for the essays and discussion boards. He thinks English 101 should have prepared us for professional writing. He will respond to email and answer your questions if you ask.
I absolultely dreaded this class. Did not give any feedback for essays on how to improve, even if it was to clarify how MLA format was not done correctly. He even had the adacity to claim the whole class had forgotten to do some exercises when in fact there was some technical issues. How rude.
This professor is a complete joke, he is to harsh on grading and he expected us to be English majors right off the bat. When we were obviously there to learn how to write a proper essay. His grading is very harsh and you will get no help. He will answer simple questions over email, but if you are lost or confused you will not pass.
The key to passing Professor Sealy's classes is simple: Ask questions He is always willing to clarify and give feedback. This is probably one of the best English professors at Columbia Basin College. His grading is fair and often very forgiving. My downfall was the fact I ended up turning in a paper last minute after getting due dates mixed up
Professor Sealy gave great feedback, and was very attentive to group discussions. I ended up in the hospital mid-quarter. He was very understanding and worked with me, so my grade wouldn't drop.
He teaches very well and gives great feedback!
Right off the bat you read a special little note called professional correspondence, that's where he comes off very egotistical and self centered. When someone demands respect the way he does, it should be embarrassing, absolutely no respect for this man, no one deserves respect that demands it, no one cares what you went through, you earn respect
You pretty much read the novels, take a quiz, participate in online group discussions then you are asked to write an essay. Not too much help is available to help you learn to write the essay (essentially the reason to be taking the class) or he doesn't make you very aware of where those resources are. would prefer to not take this class again
This guy was extremely full of him self right off the bat. I have no problem in english, I actually excel at it, but he has no room for error. He wants you to react to a book in the same exact way that he did with no freedom of speech. It seems as if he forgets it's a freshman course (English 101) and expects you to write perfect papers.
Expects you to be University level, which is understandable, but is a very tough grader and is not very helpful when essays are involved.
He was a great professor. It was not an easy class... You do have to try, just like in any other class. But he would answer any questions you had and would also give really good feedback on any assignments so you would know what you did or didn't do right.
I must say that Brad Sealy is probably the worst teacher I have come across so far in my two years of community college. He expects you to think exactly like he does, he is conceited, and while a lot of his assignments are about freedom of speech he definitely criticizes and lowers your grade if he does not like your work.
Sealy is by far the worst professor I have ever had in my entire education. His grading is harsh and he assigns way too much work. I did not learn anything from this class because he has an assignment due every day and you have to rush through everything to get everything done. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!
Definitely would not take this class again. Grades EXTREMELY hard on the essays with little to no help or guidance. I would expect to be graded this harshly if I was in a more advanced English class.... 10/10 would NEVER recommend unless you want to rip your hair out in frustration...
Great Teacher, gives good feedback and is very understanding. Enjoyed his class.
This class is time consuming mentally and physically. Mr. Sealy is a great teacher that demands quality its not all so bad if you just take his advice and instruction on his comments to your essay. I passed with a b+. This class taught me alot.
If you're looking for and easy A this is not the class for you. The work load for this class is exhausting. Professor Sealy is a tough but fair grader. On the plus side, you will learn a lot in his class. If you are an English major, GO FOR IT. If you are just needing to get an English credit out of the way, pick an easier class.
This is English 101, and he treats it like you're going to be published in the NY Times. Allows hardly any mistakes. Grades very strictly! Too strict for a 101 class. Will NOT answer many questions, which leaves you guessing on different issues, then hammers you hard. Absolutely horrible. DO NOT take his class.
Took English 101 online with Mr Sealy. Syllabus gave very clear expectations. There are timed quizzes that come directly from the reading assignments, so make sure you read them beforehand. Participation in group discussions is a must if you want to receive full credit.
His grading is very hard and you basically need to write perfect essays and discussions or you will not get a good grade. I would not recommend him.
Very blunt and straight to the point. Grades harshly.
Unless you love a challenge, don't take him! Even if he's the last professor left, wait a quarter and sign up for a different professor because you probably won't pass his class. He's a really tough grader and he's really strict and scary. He gives very accurate feedback but in a mean way and his essays are impossible to get good grades on.
Sealy is THE worst professor I have EVER taken. I've been told by many people that my writing & English skills aren't bad, but according to him, nothing is ever good enough. Sealy is disrespectful & does nothing to try to help you succeed. His grading might as well be pass or fail. When asking for help, don't bother his responses are one worded.
I think Professor Sealy gets a bad rap - he has very clear expectations and his feedback is very helpful. I learned more in his class than I ever have in any of my other ones. That being said, he is a brutal grader and his feedback is harsh. If you want to learn how to write, take his class. But if you just need the grade, find a different teacher.
I highly suggest you don't take this class if you have a job or actually enjoy writing. This class will keep you busy with something due every other day and his very strict guidelines. I have always been fond of writing and had great teachers that encouraged me to have a style and voice. Brad Sealy definitely does not fall in that category.
Knows his stuff. However, for English 101 I would absolutely not recommend him, unless English is your major. He is very clear about his expectations, but still way too harsh for this level of a class. I believe in earning your grade but it is very frustrating to receive such a low grade on essays when you put so much time and effort into them.
He is a good teacher if you know what you need to write down also never fall asleep in his class because he will kick you out. He grades on a curve and if he likes you he will call on you to answer questions the most. He has clear expectations, everything in MLA, read the stories you'll get a good grade. It is hard to fail unless you can't write.
In Sealys class, for English 99! He helped me tons with the assignments that I did not understand! He helps every student in class on what they are struggling in! His papers are really to write and if you make a mistake he is there to help you on how it can be fixed and where it needs to be fixed! He is a Great teacher! Has a great sense of humor!
He by far has been the hardest class to pass, seems like no matter how hard I work I can't pass.
Bad reviews for Mr. Sealy? He's a great teacher. Yes, his class IS tough, but I actually learned something and he's passionate about what he teaches. I'm a better writer because of his class. He gave me great, helpful feedback for ALL my essays. Do the work and support your answers. If you have questions, email him! He will help if you seek it.
I took this class because it was mandatory, not because Im majoring in English. Even though its English 101, he acts as though you should know everything there is to know on the subject. His grading is ridiculous. Is quick to tell you what you did wrong but does an awful job at telling you how to fix it. I wont ever take one of his classes again
He is THE WORST teacher I have ever had!! Nothing makes sense and you could think youre doing good, but nothing is good enough for him. He is very rude and disrespectful
This teacher makes me second guess everything I submit. When I feel really good about an essay, I'm completely shocked when I get low grades. It's demotivating because he highlights what you did wrong but gives no advice on how to correct it for future essays. I thought I was a good writer. Don't take if you love or hate English!
If you turn thing in on time he will grade you very low. If you ask for help about how to do better like he wants you to ask him, he will be very disrespectful towards you and speak to you as if he is above you. He will not help right away but rather wait days after you seek him for help. Do not take him! You will regret it.
He is an awesome teacher, you will have lots of homework but its totally worth it. I learned so much. Do your homework
Wish they had a tag called "Going to class? Still won't pass." He is by far one of the worst professors at this college. He brags about the low GPA and passing rate, and he is a horrible grader. Study for hours? You'll still do horribly on the essay. He doesn't correct more than 25% of your paper because that's "not his job." PS - too political.
He isn't as bad as everyone makes him. If you take his online class, it is so organized. You only read 3 books and write 4 essays. You have a discussion and quiz after every assigned reading. Just do your work, it isn't a lot.
I think he gets a bad rap from people who dont like to come to class and who dont like to work for their grades. He is strict and will fail you if you dont come to class and do your work. So if your looking for an easy A take an easier teacher. But if you are looking to learn, as you should be when your in college, take this instructor.
Ridiculous amount of work, especially if you're in other classes, or heaven forbid work as well. Crazy tough grader and has 0 leniency on anything.
He claims he grades by his syllabus but doesnt give any actual feedback, he throws in random articles about politics that hold a strong conservative stand-point, and he expects you to have the same views as him. It very much seems like he is power-hungry. Ive worked hard, done every assignment in a timely matter. Yet still terrified I wont pass.
Best professor
Professor Sealy isn't as bad as his reviews show. I took him for English 99 and had a good experience. If you simply put in the effort you will pass. Ask questions and he will give you good feedback. He doesn't show much emotion but he cares about his students and is very organized. I would definitely recommend him!
He is a tough grader. Always make sure you have your name on your assignment before you turn it in. You will receive ZERO if you do not have your name on it. He does not give any extra credit and make up the missing assignment.
He makes it clear day 1 even if all work is completed you will at best barely pass. This is not a good motivation. Beyond his inflated expectations he is incredibly rude in all communication. Ask for assistance and you will be put down. Avoid his classes.
Toughest class in my year at CBC. He was abrupt and obviously wanted nothing to do with me. I never asked for extra credit, just some advice on how I could improve my writing so I could get a better grade on my next essay. I tried tutoring and he still gave me 50% every time I tried. He didn't give good feedback. No help whatsoever. Don't get him!
This professor is ridiculous with grading, he does not give clear feedback but he insists that he does, and he expects you to read his mind. I have always done very well in past English classes, with A's and B's, and even tested into ENGL&101, but I will most likely end up receiving a C- or D+ by the end of the quarter. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!
Professor Sealy is difficult, but it is because he expects you to get better with practice. He provided a lot of information and guidance in the recorded material, examples of what he is looking for, and is accessible by email in a timely fashion. I did ask about the 60% statistic, he said it was an average, many do better. I did.
Make sure you do every single assignment on time. In order to be successful in this class with this professor, read all of his notes and all the modules he has about writing essays because you will learn from them and they are very useful. If you don't read and understand these, you will have a hard time in this class because he is a tough grader.
It literally said in the mans syllabus that his passing rate was something like 62% and his average passing grade was like 69%. Dont take this class if you want to do well at cbc, yes you may learn in his class but thats at the cost of your gpa and money. Dont let this teacher waste your money for you.
One of the most arrogant and disrespectful teachers I have ever met. He told me I should understand basic things and was VERY rude when I asked for in-person help. When we were in person, he cut me off and it was hard to talk to him. My friend passed away and I asked for an extra day for an assignment, he seemed mad I asked for more time...
by far the worst professor I've ever taken, you basically have to get perfect scores on essays otherwise might as well not even try. he does not give good feedback and what he is teaching doesn't make since. don't take him
He wasn't very nice right at the start. I knew it would be a hard class by the amount of information I was bombarded with the first day. He is very condescending and makes you feel dumb by asking questions. He offers extra credit that he gives totally at his discretion, based on if he thinks you deserve it or not. Do not reccomend.
He claims he gives good feedback, and I followed all of it, and still the only thing that saved me from a C was extra credit. I have always done well in writing classes, but this guy expects you to be an English major to write papers he likes. I liked the subject matter, but he straight up told me an opinion I had was wrong on my paper.
I have never missed a single assignment and have put my absolute best effort into writing the essays he assigns but of course, Im graded poorly. He also sits there and talks to you like your dumb and hes better than you, I would not take him again.
His politics lean to the right. If you take this class prepare to bite your tongue or praise conservative ideals. He will challenge and belittle your beliefs in a less than productive manner, just move on. It is quite ironic that his class covers the dangers of groupthink and then forces a narrative on the class. Be calm, breath and act cool.
I am embarrassed to say that I did better in both chemistry in statistics classes than a stupid english class. I worked my butt of in this class, and still received a B. Our first assignment, autobiography discussion post, said the post should be near 200 words. My post was 230 and I got a B soley for being "too verbose." He ruined my GPA.
He was not willing to help me during this hard time. Given my personal situation he did not care. He responded to me by just restating the syllabus and saying "So, at this point you have forfeited the opportunity to pass the class. Of course, you can withdraw from the class to avoid a failing grade." So I did. I Withdrew.
I'm a great writer and a very hard worker, and this class was an absolute nightmare. Sealy is extremely unreasonable when it comes to grading. I spent hours upon HOURS trying to follow all of his criticism and better my work to his standards, and it was never good enough. I finally gave up near the end, and got the same grades as when I tried hard.
Too political
His teaching and grading is questionable.
He's horrible! I thought I'd give him a shot for summer classes thinking he'd be a lot better than what people had said but I was wrong. Lots of reading and is a really hard grader and doesn't care at all. I wasn't sure where t turn a revised essay so I ended up turning it in 4 minutes late and he just said ain't reading this.
As someone who usually excells in English, after taking this course, my confidence was shattered. I had gone in hoping to get ahead by taking a summer course but ended up wasting my time and eventually dropped. The proffessor grades far too harsh. We're college students in a gen ed English, not 400 level English majors.
Almost impossible to pass his class. I literally follow every rubric exactly to what it says and he still gives me horrible grades and does not give good feedback. I would not recommend this professor to anyone.
I decided to give him a chance regardless of the reviews I read on here and it was the worst mistake ever! My experience with this professor was horrible!
I took his class thinking he wouldn't be that bad, but I was clearly wrong he literally told me to leave his class because he thought I wasn't gonna pass. Do not recommend it.
Before taking his class I looked at his reviews and decided to give him a chance. Absolutely, would never do again. Every time I would email him for help he would either not respond or send me the syllabus. Once he responded and told me to withdraw because I wont pass his class.
I am a running start student and it is my first year. You would think that the professor would be kind an answer your questions especially because we are in a pandemic. Everytime I asked a question he told me to read the syllabus. I didnt turn in one essay so he locked all the homework and everything for the rest of the semester. Wouldnt recommend
Professor Sealy is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He presents his teaching style in an okay manner, however at times it seems like too much all together. I wrote my first ever essay for college, read and analyzed thoroughly. Got my paper back and failed. He excepts way too much from first year students and grades way too harsh!
I've always succeeded in English classes. However, Professor Sealy was a real run for my money. I followed his suggestions and read his rubrics thoroughly. Despite this, I received my lowest essay grades ever. His feedback did not help my writing skills whatsoever. He failed my first essay, then had the nerve to say I was a good writer.
Very tough grader on essays and discussions. Gives good feedback on essays but thats about it.
Extremely hard grader. Would not take his class again. My work was never good enough for him.
Wish I wouldve read these reviews before taking this professor. His teaching style is his way or no way. Quite honestly I dont even think HE knows what he wants, you can follow everything step by step but its still not good enough. I learned ZERO in his class. If youre looking for a quality education do not take him. I would rate 0/5
Probably one of the hardest class I've taken so far. Professor Sealy is a very tough grader, this was the only class I got a D in and all of my other classes I've gotten A's or B's.
Is very strict when it comes to grading, does not help you with anything, is extremely rude (even through online), and expects you to know everything in the world when it comes to English
Avoid this class he says 40% of the people withdraw and the 60% remaining would average 2.5GPA. He was extremely rude, not helpful at all, treats everyone like there idiots.
This teachers is absolute cheeks literally so boring. Every time I try to ask a question always tells me to look at the syllabus . It seems as if he doesn't even look at the reviews and wants to continue being a bad teacher.
His grading makes NO sense. He manages to come up with weird, specific numbers like 3.8/5. He is not helpful, and much too abrasive in his feedback for anyone to want to take his advice. He is rude, and stuck up. The only positive thing about this class are the books. Articles are trash, but the books are good reads.
He is very rude. I turned In a summary in regards to a book and he gave me a bad score just because I forgot to capitalize one of the characters name. Dont recommend him at all. His grading doesnt make sense at all and his answer to all questions is look at the syllabus.
After reading his reviews on here I was hesitant. English is my worst subject. However, he is one of the best professors I have had. Yes, he makes you work for your grade and yes, he is straight forward and blunt but as long as you follow his instructions and do the work you will pass. I am taking 102 with him and am actually excited!
Avoid if possible.
Avoid at all costs. Waste of money. Doesnt grade on quality of work.
Professor makes you feel stupid if you ask questions.
I did not like this professor at all she was very rude and hard on you and had no mercy!!!
I did not like this professor.
Stress levels were off the chart. Classmates were reaching out to each other for help since we were on our own. Read the syllabus and material or find your own answers Pros: Bar is high. Cons: Up to you to find a way over that bar. You miss an item on your essay? He won't grade it. You send him a direct message? Won't respond.
he expects you to know what you're doing. you CAN ask questions but he doesn't really welcome them. he'll answer vaguely. he doesn't accept any late work or any excuses unless you tell him ahead of time. I enjoyed the books we read though.
His class is one of the hardest classes I have taken so far. But, he is logical, very strict to his rules. Read and follow his rules. Essays are not easy so prepare to get help as much as possible from a tutor or from the professor. This course is hard but not impossible to get an A.
Rude, strict, not helpful. Hard class
My advice to new college students, avoid teachers who are PROUD to have students fail their class like the plague. This professor is a perfect example.
Didn't even make it through the first week. Withdrew because his syllabus set off huge alarm bells. He points out that historically 60% pass his class and the grade average was C. Also, if you don't get a score of 60% or above on the timed essay, you fail the class. All information found in his syllabus. I didn't want to take the risk.
He radiates self-importance. As if teaching an online basic English class makes him the smartest man in the world. He grades hard and has no time for people who don't make this class their number one priority. If you get Sealy, try to switch to another professor.
Worst teacher in the whole world. Going to switch professors soon. He's so full of himself and has no human emotions. Run as fast as you can if you get this professor.
He will not read you essays if you make more then a couple errors. Even if he allows you to revise the essay as he request he will write back that he did not take time to reread anything and no feed back.
Professor Sealy was the most difficult grader I've had thus far in an instructor, but also the best. I learned more in this class than I have in any other class at CBC and I've now taken 8 courses. I think people don't like him because they can't get an easy A. I thoroughly enjoyed his teaching style, as he expects adults, not teenagers.
Very tough grader and shows no remorse to students.
I would like to start my rating by specifying that I did not enjoy the teacher. Now with my experience with the class, beginning with his course syllabus it was a very depressing read with many red flags, those being that the averages for the class were barely passing with a C secondly any grade below a %60 percent on either timed essays is a fail
Mr. Sealy is one of the hardest graders and one of the most biased and unprofessional professors I've had. Never responds to messages, while he explains WHY he docks your grade for most issues, he repeatedly docks grades that counter the main argument of the class. Abhorrently biased and overall a bad teacher. Never take his class.
I had a horrible experience in this class. One mistake he saw and it was an automatic 0. I dropped off this class due to poor communication, no help, and no explanation, how else will I learn from my mistakes? And was lied to. I could not stand this anymore how strict he was and worse being lied to by this teacher.
Barley gives out a good grade. Very strict. If you're online the discussions take a lot of effort which is annoying. ONLY TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A JOURNALISTS. Because his class is very hard
Even though I passed with an A- I would never take a professor like him again, syllabus is unwelcoming and just silly. I don't feel as if I learn what the course catalog stated I would. I experienced loss of creativity in my writing more than anything since he grades based off how well you follow HIS very over detailed, boring essay rubrics. NOPE!
Professor Sealy is a great English instructor. He always provides clear instructions on how to pass his class and offers constructive feedback on how you can improve your work.
Professor Sealy grades your work based on your understanding of the assigned books. If you put in the effort, you shouldn't have a problem passing his class, and he expects you to submit college-level work.
I've heard Professor Sealy is very nice in person, but online he is not a good professor. He seems to treat English 101 like he's an army drill sergeant. He was very serious about everything, and he only ever gave negative feedback. Sealy does not tell you what you did well in your essays, only what you did poorly. His feedback was sometimes vague.
I took Sealy over 20 years ago; he was one of my favorites. I don't think I missed any points in his courses. At the time I was very enthusiastic about literature and was a Running Start student. Most of the negativity here is unwarranted. Many students struggle with writing. Visit the Writing Center if struggling to improve your writing.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Accused me of academic dishonesty when I was completely honest (with proof) and he gave me an F for the class. Was rude to me. In my essay I described a society as "Orwellian" (which it was) and he commented to say it was the opposite. Doesn't even know what Orwellian means. I had to drop the class and file a report.
Known for using fallible AI checkers to accuse students of cheating. No proof, just his gut, "I've been doing this long enough to know when someone is using AI." The Dean sites several complaints of false accusations.
Professor Sealy is the most frustrating professor I have had the misfortune of taking a class with. He provides no helpful feedback while grading anything and every question I had asked him through email was met with a message telling me to reread the instructions or the notes he left for me which were just negative comments that told me nothing.
This teacher falsely accuses students of using AI. He will not discuss and only accuses, gives an "F", and then threatens to have you removed from the class. He causes students to disengage from learning, totally opposite of what you would expect from a teacher. If he has falsely accused you, seek support from the Deans.
Yeah is teacher really taught me that I should use RateMyProfessor before picking a teacher. Grading system is wack, giving out some weird number that he probably made up on the spot. Not to mention is guy gives like zero feedback on why he graded you a certain way. I'd be very wary of taking this professor.
Nice professor. This class was okay, but will not take again.
This class was okay, but I would not take it again.
He would make fun of students in discussion boards publicly. 2-3 books required for this class weren't sold anywhere but amazon, which made it difficult for me to get them. The class is very dependent on essay grades!! He grades very hard on stuff not even talked about. He is not very good at giving proper feedback on your work to fix.
I should've use Rate my professor. He gave no feedback on any paper I ever wrote. All of the papers that I ever wrote went through two revisions, and I read my papers. The other people constantly I would get that. My papers were considered AI, even though he tested them for AI, and they would pop up as 0%. 10 complaints from multiple students.
The required books are difficult to find and the quizzes based off the books questions are so specific it's kind of ridiculous. He didn't give me a chance to talk to him when he flagged me using AI (which I didn't use) on a quiz and instantly kicked me out his class no hesitation. He also didn't give much feedback.
Clearly a professor who has lost his passion for teaching long ago. I can't really say I learned anything, nor did he teach me anything in this course. All he did was act like he is the world's greatest professor, doing CBC a favor as he takes a break from teaching at Yale, all while doing very little teaching at all. Class is laughable. A farce.
This professor is awful. Doesn't actually teach anything nor do you learn anything. He directs you to his syllabus info if you ask any questions, or he will simply repeat "read the instructions again." Do not take this professor if you value learning, college credit, English, or joy. Genuinely feels at times he's trying to be a bad professor.
In all honesty, I feel like it was mostly on me for the grade I have received or I am maybe just convincing myself that. Sealy's a pretty tough grader, if you think you did well - you probably got at least mediocre grade. I feel like he should be at least more sympathetic with students, even if we are adults. If you want a challenge, go ahead.
awful. wish I would have looked at RMP before taking. I hoped I got into a car accident when I had his class so I didn't have to go. he takes a while to grade and will flag your papers for AI even when you didn't use any AI. I cried because of his class.
He wasn't the worst prof. I've taken but definitely not the best AT ALL. Would not recommend his class to anyone. He made English way harder and miserable. Cried a few times because of this class.
I received a 94.31% but he has 5% xtra credit when u be respectful so I ended with a 99.31%. Takes using AI seriously, Grammarly counts. I dedicated hrs into my essays. The 3 books he made us read were interesting. There are 2 discussions & 1 quiz every wk. 3 essays, 2/3 he revises for u & a timed essay exam. 1/2 students to get a 4.0 this tri.
Took Brad Sealy's English Comp I and II class in 2011/12. He was the only English teacher I had throughout MS, HS, and college whose feedback actually made me a better writer. I am a professional technical writer today. He is TOUGH, but a great teacher if you engage and want to actually improve your writing.
Would not recommend. I wish I realized how low his rating was before taking the class. Just because he might have a Masters in English, doesn't mean students in English 101 should be graded to that level.
this professor is such a tough grader. I fixed literally everything on one of my essays that he gave me feedback on and I went up 1 point. extremely strict on AI. even if you wrote it and its flagged as AI you get a zero for the assignment. not a horrible teacher but there are definitely nicer once out there.
DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Talking this class has made me lose ALL of my sanity. Whenever I would commute to class I would run red lights in hopes that I would be T-boned by a semi-truck so I wouldn't have to go back to his class. He always claims that the essays are written in AI even with proof that it wasn't. Overall -10/10.
I was warned before my enrollment in this class that it was very difficult. He IS very difficult. However he's clear with what he wants, he gives great feedback, and is available very often. You get two attempts on all essays. If you cannot handle being treated like an adult you will not like his class. If you're ready to work it's perfect.
