One of the nicest guys you'll ever want to meet. Will jump through fire to get you what you need.
Skaar is a great guy and not to mention hilarious! Lab was always a blast despite the fact it was fri afternoon!
This guy is great, i wish he would teach all my classes. He really cares about what he's doing. :)
At the beginning he comes off kind of confusing like. But after awhile you get use to him and his sillyness and everything just makes sense. Real easy going guy and he cares how you are doing. Fun guy!
Dr. Skaar rocks!
A great teacher!
Good teacher
Dr. Skaar is great- loved the class, it was fun and interesting. He is obviously excited to be teaching, and really gets to know his students.
He saved my life. And adding to that, he is such a great person. I feel as if he actually CARES about you, as an individual. And he likes country music!
He's nice and interesting but he doesn't really know what is going on this semester becuase the admin changed lab so hes not really all that helpful.
His class is disorganized and half the time he is sitting in the back observing.
A good teacher he knows how to interact well with the students and can make them laugh too.
My favorite class. ever. He is an awesome teacher...keeps class interesting and fun
Very fun teacher! Class was interesting and fun! Enjoyed getting to know him.
Really nice guy and will try to help you out with anything. But probably the most disorganized man alive. A lot of class time is spent trying to figure out what to do next and there is a lot of confusion with directions on assignments and class work.
Really nice teacher, I'm a Dairy Science major, so the subject matter is in my interests anyway, but we did some neat tours. Show up for class, do the homework, and study for the tests. Tests aren't hard but he puts stuff in that wasn't necessarily covered in class but might have been on the hw. Not a hard class to get through.
Skaar rocks my socks. Great teacher, very enthusiastic, but he can be disorganized and is usually the first to admit it. Look over the old test and study sheet and the class will be a breeze. Don't forget to do your homework.
Take his class!! He's a lot of fun and makes things very interesting. You'll do well if you attend every lecture and lab (easy quizes every lecture and daily points every lab) and do the homework. The tests aren't bad if you study the material, there's usually nothing surprising on the tests. Everything is gone over pretty well. Overall- excellent!
Fun teacher that is enthusiastic about teaching. Weekly quizes are easy. Take notes and do the homework. Study notes, homework, quizes and daily worksheets for tests.
If you are AnSci, Skaar is by far the best advisor you can get. He's very helpful and honestly cares about how you're doing. Treats you like an intelligent student, unlike most people with freshman.
Extremely disorganized and is rarely in class...hope for good TA's because they're the only ones there to help you. Easy class overall
****. Biased against anyone not from a farm background. Dislikes anyone who's opinion doesn't match his own. Uninformed/doesn't care about animal welfare. Impossible to get a hold of. Unwilling to make accommodations. Grading is biased and very dependent on his mood at the time of grading. Attitude is very fake.
Great guy, lots of fun!
This class is pointless. It's a requirement so grin and bear it. Skaar spends most of the time flapping his jaws about nothing related to the class. He's highly personable, but I don't feel is a good teacher.
Awesome teacher and class! Going to class helps...get points just for being there. Study using hw, quizzes, and daily sheets for the exams...they really help. Exams aren't too difficult. Learned alot in this class!
I owe so much to Brad Skaar, he is by far the best advisor that I have met. (he isn't even mine and I use him) He treats you like an adult and has many life experiances, very smart and my role model, I can't say enough good things about this guy.
I love animal science!!!
You have to be nuts not to love Skaar as a professor!
Photo-Copy EVERYTHING you turn into him! He loses stuff easily and then wont give you even partial credit when its his fault! He won't email you back - don't even bother. He takes off points for the tiniest things and unless you have a VERY strong background in cattle don't take this class it will just make your schedule suck.
Awesome!
I thought this class was really unorganized, but the material itself was pretty easy. Still, the tests are really hard to study for as a result of this courses' unorganized teaching style. Just make sure to come to class everyday and do the homework! Only way to pass.
Skaar is the man!
Very helpful at times and other just an ass. very unorganized lost homework 3 different times and wouldn't admit it was him also tried cheating me out of many points.
He's very helpful and is just a goofy guy -- likes to go off on stories. He makes the learning atmosphere very relaxing, bringing coffee to tests in case you need it. He teaches well and thorough enough BUT he thinks everyone has a common knowledge (or thinks its common sense) of all things beef and if you don't know, he'll treat you like an idiot.
Decent Prof..hard tests!
Fun for 101, but more serious for 226, especially if you don't have a beef background. I like AnS 101 with him a lot, but he didn't explain things very well in beef, he assumed everyone knew what he was talking about and there was no textbook to refer to.
Study for the exams as much as possible, they have a lot of information on them and they are half of your graded. The other half is from in class quizzes, homework and labs. There are no make up points for any of theses, if you miss class you get a zero for them.
Class was interesting but lectures were sometimes unorganized. Slides had a lot of information and go by fast. Homework can take a long time. Friendly teachers though and fun. Loved labs.
Great professor. Doesn't spoon feed you/makes you work hard for your grade which is refreshing. A lot of students not used to that hated the class because they actually had to pay attention, learn, study, and try hard to pass. Plenty of homework, but it helps when studying for the exams, which can be a challenge. I enjoyed the class.
Dr. Skaar is very passionate about this class. He keeps it exciting. If you go to class and the labs, it is not hard to get a good grade. He is willing to help any time if you go to him. Overall great professor who makes the class fun.
Homework/quizes are easy. More difficult for people who have no history in domestic animals (cattle, sheep, pigs, ect). Tests are difficult.
He likes to ramble in class, which makes it distracting and hard to pay attention. Homework is hard, he will dock points over nothing! Tests are over many subjects, hard and long. STUDY for them!
This crazy guy.....likes to ramble and laugh at a whole lot of nothing, but was an incredible teacher when he is focused. Many times he would bring in a high expert if he didn't know information (Super nice for keeping things interesting) and always answered questions and tried to work with you on anything
Who doesn't love Skaar! You have to work at it, but in the end if you worked hard, you will get a good grade.
Great to listen to in lectures. Taking notes in class really helps, but the slideshows he uses are usually all online. Labs take a long time and are usually a lot of work. Only real complaint is his aide which is a 20 something 'know it all' type woman who thinks she HAS to add her comment to whatever he says, which usually just the same thing.
Dr. Skaar is a great professor. He is very passionate about what he is talking about. Class isn't required but without going it would be hard to do well on the tests, which are very long but pretty easy. He can be kind of scatter brained during lecture, but it keeps it interesting and fun. The labs are hands on and you can learn a lot.
Really enjoyed him.
Dr. Skaar is super friendly and makes his classes accessible to all students. I took both his 101 class and his beef science class. They both had quite a bit of homework and the tests could be challenging, but everything was very fair and I learned a lot. 101 was my favorite ISU class!!!
He has a lot of assignments. He test are really hard sometimes and there are times he will dock you points if he didn't like how you worded something even if its right.
Skaar is my advisor and he is always willing to help people with material. Coming from a beef background, I learned a lot from taking this class. Tedious homework assignments, but he wants you to draw conclusions from the material. Tests are challenging if you don't truly understand the material, but go to class, do the homework and you'll be fine
I really enjoyed having Skaar as a teacher. He was good at what he does and make things clear and easy to understand. I would take another class with him.
Prof Skaar is fun. Just go to class and turn in your homework! Easy A if you try. I got a D but it was my own fault lol
101 Is great. His TA's are tough graders, have to be exact with wording. The labs can be a pain because it's at the hansen center which is behind the towers. Later into the semester you start taking farm tours, which is really fun. Homework can be very long and only worth 10 points. Lecture also has quizzes every week worth 5 points plus a bonus ?
Skaar is my favorite professor. His lectures are incredibly clear and straightforward. There is an easy 5-point quiz every week over the past week's materials, so if you don't go to class you won't be able to make up those points. Labs are sometimes difficult because they are off campus at different farms. Overall, it was a really enjoyable class!
Dr. Skaar does a great job of going over every possible aspect a bovine farmer would run into. His homework and tests can have difficult wording, but if you ask him to elaborate, he is VERY helpful. So do the homework in advance. He also has a practice exam. USE IT TO STUDY. Most of the concepts, if not all of them, are on his exams as well.
Dr. Skaar was a great prof for 101, not for beef science. If you don't have a beef background don't take this class. It is really confusing. He goes on long tangents about things that aren't relevant, and will grade a correct answer as wrong if the answer isn't exactly "what he was looking for". Use the practice exam to study, and review with him!
Super interesting lectures, and very nice. Only has two tests all semester, so they cover a lot of information. That doesn't make them hard, the hard part is answering questions exactly how he wants it answered. Your answer may be right, but not exactly what he wants. That is the only thing that bothered me.
This class is a great intro to Animal Science. Dr. Skaar is very friendly and welcoming, and is eager to teach students all about animals.
He's very helpful with any questions that you have! Even though there's homework every week it's very do able and straightforward!
Skaar is hilarious and great at explaining things. He's always willing to talk if you have any questions or comments. He'll love you if you tell him animal related puns and ask questions .
He is very passionate about what he teaches. The tests are a little bit difficult if you don't study for them.
I enjoyed Dr. Skaar's teaching method. He is laid-back, funny, and informative. Your grade comes from only two tests, so be sure to study for them if you want to do well. Super easy class if you take the time to study and/or have a farm background at all. Fill out the study guide, study them, memorize the breeds, and you will do well.
I absolutely HATE this professor. I lost points on my exam because I used the word "is" instead of "was" and when I asked him about it he told me that I had all the right answers but they weren't worded the right way. I am a beef producer in this class and he makes me hate working with cattle.
He's the best professor I have ever had in my life. He's so funny, easy lecture, and fun class overall. Recommend this 100%.
Dr. Skaar really cared about students and if you were struggling he did his best to help. I had him for animal science 101 and i don't come from a farming background and still did well. He had lots of homework, one due every week and a quiz in class every week for 5 points but it was manageable. Tests were easy if you listened and did the work.
He's a little spacey, but his class is fun! He curves his exams up so at least some people get a 100%. You'll know exactly what you have to study and as long as you memorize it all you'll be good.
Always willing to clarify things you don't understand, and is willing to fix things to make them right as well. Really nice and funny guy. He also tries to get to know individuals, not just a class as a whole.
He's way better than Jodi, so I can't complain
Loved ANS 101! He tries to make sure everyone understands the material. Labs are fun and tests are relatively easy (but lengthy). Very helpful for people who do not have a farming background. Just make sure to keep up with the homework and prepare for the in class quizzes.
This class is impossible if you are unwilling to regurgitate word-for-word what Skaar says in lectures. If you have even a slight background in beef you will struggle because objectively right answers are wrong because they aren't exactly what Skaar was looking for. The pop quizzes are extra credit and the lectures are long/pointless.
A fantastic lecturer. Has lots of stories and comments that you can only get in class. Fun labs at the ISU farms. Lots of study material if you complete the worksheets. Beware of the TAs!
Skaar is an alright professor. Just do your homework but he can be rude to students. He doesn't allow collaboration on Tophat quizzes. You only have two exams so studying is really important. Just show up to labs and you will get credit.
Skaar wasn't too bad of a teacher. Seemed knowledgable about the industry, the powerpoint notes could have been put together better. An easy quiz in class and wks in lab once a week. Homework wasn't to bad either, it was sometimes long. Study hard for the tests as they are fill in the blank and multiple choice. Farm tours were fun and interesting.
He's okay, a little old school so kind of stuck in his ways. Grading kinda unfair, depends on the TA you get for the section you're put in. Tests are big--STUDY. Material isn't hard, just lots of memorizing. Lectures are okay, he can fly a bit without giving lots of substantial material, but don't skip.
He can be a tough grader and his grading criteria isnt that clear. Hes a really nice guy that gives amazing lectures! He really knows what hes talking about. The tests are difficult and you really need to study for them.
Awful teacher takes as many points as possible. loves to see people fail. If you can't quote him word for word you won't do well.
Skaar was one of the best professors Ive had for a lecture. He allowed students to ask questions during lecture and answered them kindheartedly. Unfortunately, there was a large amount of homework. Each class has a quiz. Each lab has a worksheet. And after lab you have another assignment that must be turned in, in paper, outside class hours.
He's a great professor and he is pretty passionate in his lectures. The lectures are very detailed so take good notes. The labs are crucial. Quizzes in the beginning of lecture so make sure to review material from the previous week for easy points. He answers questions well too. File assignments/notes effectively, heavy review for exams needed.
Really amazing professor. Works really hard to help you, especially if you go to him with questions. He's always more than happy to explain material more in-depth or in a different way so that you can understand. Take good notes and review them! Exams are a bit difficult, but if you're well prepared they're quite easy.
Class is one that you have to work for. Lots of material thrown at you, but it's not impossible. He's is very passionate about animals, especially the beef industry, and wants you to learn about it as much as possible. Things are very detailed and can be quite specific, but it's for a good reason. Show up for class, otherwise you wont understand.
One of the most fun classes I have taken at Iowa State! Does a good job of making sure you understand the material even if you didn't come from a livestock background.
Dr. Skaar is a guy you want in your corner. However, he is the most difficult grader I've encountered. If you do not word it EXACTLY like he does, it's probably wrong. Go talk to him, that is the best way to pass. He truly does care, but he has an odd way of showing it by criticizing young people and our poor wording at least once a week in class.
Too much homework for it to only be 25 percent of your grade. He lied about what was to be expected on the first exam. A little lazy as well. Not a terrible guy, just not a good professor.
Dr. Skaar is an amazing teacher, in recent years he has moved to multiple choice on exams and he owns up to mistakes. He is very picky about attendance but he is accommodating. He is very respectful and fun too. I would recommend taking this class!
I loved taking this class with Skaar. I did have to work for my grade, but I enjoyed the lectures and labs. Exams were all multiple choice and true or false, making them easy if you pay attention and study. Skaar is very knowledgeable and I feel that he cares about the success of his students. I would recommend taking this class.
He knows what he talking about the labs were fun and I loved every second of him will take another class of his soon! :)
Homework is not hard at all. Do your work and you will be good!
Amazing lecturer, and wonderful to talk to if you are unsure about your major. If you have an ag background, this class is fairly easy. There are assignments that have to be turned in in paper, which can be easy to forget about. Very protective/strict about attendance. There are good quizlets for exam studying, I got As on the exams using them.
You will not like this if you have a very anthropomorphic stance on animals. This class made me a vegan :)
There's a quiz every lecture period. Labs are usually on the farms as just a walking tour so it's not super exciting. However, Skaar is a very entertaining lecturer and is very knowledgeable on the subjects he teaches. The only downside was his TA's that graded some of the papers with different answers than what his lecture notes say.
Two exams count for 75% of your grade. Labs will last full two hours during the farm tours. Needs very specific terms on homeworks, tests, etc. Be aware that grading is not always the same based on what TA grades your assignment.
It takes him until two days before final grades are out for you to know your grade for the first time since the mid-term grades were released. His Canvas is an absolute disaster. he abbreviates everything making it extremely difficult to know what to do and what not to do. He is a nice person, just can't use technology... It's 2020 figure it out.
Dr. Skaar was incredibly helpful during COVID. He was willing to answer any questions on the homework and quizzes, which meant those were easy As. He would also help you on tests if you just asked. I really wish we could have been in person, but he was very helpful and his lectures were very enjoyable!
Dr. Skaar a caring professor that honestly wants you to do well. However, his tests are long and difficult. His homework assignments are very wordy and are hard to navigate through at times. If you ask questions though, he will help you out and walk you through everything. Overall, I would take classes with him again.
The worst professor I have had in my college career. This class nowhere near matches the workload of the other ansci 200-levels. Grades extremely hard and wants specific answers that no one knows.
I'll make it simple, this professor made me hate my major.
Caring professor but if he needs to flunk you he will. Grades heavy, but answers your questions. Basically, doesn't care if students fail or are doing badly. Treats every course as its 400/500 levels and expects every student to think like he does.
Skaar really enjoys teaching this course to his students. He always has entertaining stories and is able to answer questions accurately. Definitely passionate about animal science and agriculture. Be aware though the 2 big exams for this course are over 100 questions are is weighted extremely heavy. Be prepared to study!
I really like Dr. Skaar and think he tries really hard to make his classes fun. 411 was a super easy class as your only graded on Packback, reflection sheets, and a final project. This class had no tests or homework unless you didn't get something done in class. Pretty simple, he wants you to succeed and be successful after college.
Overall animal science 101 with Dr. Skaar was very enjoyable, but the major downfall of the class is that the 2 exams are 75% of your grade. I have a farm background so the class was fairly easy for me but if you don't have that background good luck charlie. I recommend studying a lot if you don't have prior knowledge of livestock.
To do any good on homework or test you have to write exactly what he wants to see or don't bother. The exams are very lengthy and all word problems. He grades all homework and exams by hand so just keep that in mind. Way more difficult than the other 200-level ans courses. Personally would avoid taking his classes unless you have to.
I took ANS 426 and ANS 411. He is unclear with his instructions constantly, he doesn't care to make content interesting, and he surrounds himself and our class with conservative white men. It makes no logical sense and all his instructions fir every assignment are a very large paragraph of tangents. You do not get much out of these classes
411 is required but it is such a joke. Sherry Olsen and Skaar teach it together and I feel like I am just being forced to watch fox news but more of a waste of time. Olsen needs to stop teaching and Skaar needs to get with the times.
Followed all of their random formatting requirements and still didn't do well on the final paper. The class is relatively easy to pass if you go to every class but both he and Olsen are very conservative and let it show in this class. All of the speakers were conservative and mostly uninteresting. Didn't have this issue with Skaar freshman year.
I had him for Intro to animal science. He talks as though you should already know everything. He talks as though everyone in the class is a farmer and should understand his lingo. As someone who grew up in the city, I never had any idea what he was talking about. But great guy.
Professor Skaar is a great person. I believe he truly cares about his students. He is sometimes unorganized, and his canvas was kind of hard to maneuver. There are 2 exams worth 75% of your grade, so definitely study. I didn't come from a farm background, so much of the material was hard to memorize, but it's manageable.
Very nice and easy going. This class has one lecture section and one lab section. the lectures aren't mandatory but the labs are if you want your daily lab points. The exams are roughly 100 questions long and can be a little tough if you don't study enough. A lot of information you have to know.
He loves his field of study and is a great guy in general. The homework can be a bit tricky, but he will help you a lot just by asking questions.
He was a fantastic prof but the tests determine how you do. The first test isn't until right after spring break, so it's over everything from the beginning of the year to then. The labs are essential for the second exam. Study a lot for the exams because it's hard to bounce back.
Skaar was overall a great professor, but the homework and exams were pretty tricky. If you do not write it exactly how he said it, it will likely be counted wrong. Besides that, he answers any questions and is a very helpful professor. He also offers extra credit through in-class quizzes and other opportunities throughout the semester.
Doing the HW was almost impossible without going through the whole thing with him. Also, the exams are exclusively short answer, and he is looking for VERY specific answers. You can tell he cares about the students and he is very enthusiastic about answering any questions, but the HW and exam are just unnecessarily difficult.
Fun guy and super fun to listen to during lectures. However, we never finish the slides and you are expected to go over them on your own.
I hated this professor so much. Made me hate my major.
Professor Skaar is a knowledgeable instructor, but the grading heavily depends on the exams. While the material can be challenging without a farm background, engaging with the lectures and using tools like Unstuck ai can help prepare for the assessments.
Absolutely love Dr. Skaar! He is a silly dude, and is super passionate about animals (especially beef). I do not have a farming background, and I still found the class super easy, I studied about 1 hour total for the whole semester. The exams are most of your grade, but minimal effort should get you an A if you show up and pay attention.
He is very passionate about what he does, and his lectures can be very interesting. Labs are essential to go to; pretty much everything in the lab is on the exams. One thing about him is that he doesn't get back to your emails, so just talk to him in person if you can. Exams are pretty easy if you study and actually learn the material.
Skaar is a great and personable professor. For this class, he brings in a wide variety of speakers from across the industry. While the time for this class is not the most convenient, it is just once a week. Worksheets were easy if you properly read the question, and the big project is just all opinion. Also, the exam was at a brewery.
If you miss a lab or aren't good at exams good luck. Two exams make up 70 percent of the grade. Dr. Skaar is a nice guy though, I really enjoyed getting to know him. Make Quizlets and review notes and you will probably be fine.
Relies heavily on two tests. Takes a lot of study time if you have no background in animal ag. You have to go to labs, or you'll be clueless. Lectures are interesting and provide a good background, but they don't directly correlate with the tests. Study ahead and understand all the terminology.
Suppose you don't have an Ag background, good luck! The lectures typically do not correlate much with the tests, which account for 70% of your grade. If you do ask him a question, be prepared for the best answer ever or a condescending tone. The exams typically consist of 120 questions, so study frequently and create a Quizlet to review every day.
Have good transportation off campus, because lab is very rarely on campus.
All the homework very heavily relies on being present at the labs, so have transportation to get to the off-campus labs.
