I had him for the first time he taught. He's very laid back and makes all of the students feel comfortable. Fair tests right from notes. Study hard and ask questions!
Difficult class but Awesome Prof!! Very laid back, great sense of humor, not afraid to be himself, and respects his students. Uses different teaching methods to explain different concepts. Exams are totally fair. A must have. professor.
Great Prof- good teaching methods and very helpfull!
Don't let the fact that he is new fool you. He is very clear with what he wants, and explains things in ways that you can understand. He is always willing to help with any questions and he understands that this is a hard class.
He's better than any other science prof. i've had. I've learned so much from him! He's great!
Very hard class, taught very well! You can tell he loves his job! Uses different methods to teach as well as making hard material easier to understand. THis is his first semester, but take him over Nickel and Carlson...you'll do better
BEST PROF EVER! I love this guy - he's so nice, tried to make lecture fun, and is super helpful. Take his class if you can!!
GREAT TEACHING STYLE!!!
THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD.... He is awsome!!! Hard class with all the material, but this guy knows how to teach it to the class so they can remember, he uses a fun, yet interesting way of teaching the material to the class.TRUST ME you'll love it
I <3 Dr. Wallar! Made biochem fun. be warned that he's quirky and needs some pants that aren't so tapered. but seriously, he's awesome. well know your name by the end of semester. loves to help. STUDY! know your amino acids, or you'll be screwed. =)
Awesome instructor. Hard class, but he made things interesting and sometimes even fun. Very personable. Shocked me around midsemester when he called me by name in the hallway. Awesome!
This class is VERY hard. but he was more than willing to help outside of class anytime! Overall, I think he was a great prof! Just make sure to STUDY!!!!!!!!!!!
Best class I've ever had. Best professor I've ever had. would even take the class again if I had to
Great Prof! Funny and excited about biochem! Very willing to help. Be warned though, even if you know everything for a test he wants more, he wants you to know it so well you can apply it new, weird concepts, which is hard, no tips for that problem...
Awesome professor! ALWAYS willing to help and explain. even though the course as a whole is complicated i feel he makes it easier compared to the other profs! definately choose him if possible!
Great Prof. He is very smart and knows how to teach others. He is a big UofM fan, GO BLUE!!
Great prof, great guy in general. Very helpful, very clear. Makes the hard material not seem so bad.
he was so hot and smart- you've gotta take his class
Very hard class, but Prof. Wallar is the best prof to get for this class. He explains things so you can understand, but makes the exams a little tricky, study hard and you will do okay.
Dr. Wallar is probably the best prof I have had at GVSU. He made biochem interesting yet challenging. Not only does he want his students to understand concepts, he is awesome to talk to about whatever. I would re-arrange my schedule in order to have him again. Make sure to study, not memorize.
Nice guy and very clear in lecture..I was more interested in the areas he discussed in class more than the other profs. No real work outside of class but does have a test which you will definitely need to study hard for.
one of the worst professors i've ever had. i dont know where the other ratings came from. tests are very tricky...notes very vague compared to the complexity of his exams. tries to be funny; isnt at all. sometimes studying your butt off wont help you a bit. hard class, hard professor
Easily one the best profs I've ever had. This class is hard, but he is so helpful. The last post made me laugh out loud. Dr. Waller provides last year's exams as practice, has answered every one of my e-mails, and answers questions whenever he is in his office. Just study hard, don't just memorize!
he's a great professor. if you arent doing good, it's your own fault because he's willing to help and answer questions. you have to understand the stuff for the exams and not just memorize, which make the tests hard, but he's a GREAT teacher. I recommend him.
WOW. Best prof I've had so far at GVSU. The subject is difficult, be he really knows how to teach and seems to enjoy it. He will go completely out of his way to help students. Presents material clearly & gives you tons of practice. Also, funnier than he gives himself credit for. GET HIM IF YOU CAN.
Great Prof.! If you have to take this class, get him. Although the class content is very difficult, he can explain it well and makes it interesting. Keep in mind this is a very, very hard class. Do not expect a good grade even if it all seems clear to you.
Wallar is a great teacher, he is very clear and very helpful. The material is very hard, but he does a great job of explaining it. He is very passionate about what he does and also likes to see students do well. Take this teacher for CHM 232 if you can!
Wallar is an awesome professor. He knows the subject and he knows how to teach it. His tests are hard but they make you learn the subject. Very interesting class and very helpful professor.
Dr. Waller tops my list of one of the best professors at GVSU. He is passionate about biochem, and truly cares if his students get it! Even though this is a tough class, his teaching style makes the topics clear, down to earth and intersting. He also gives much of his time to help students. Thanks!
THE MAN! I love this guy, best professor I have had at Grand Valley. People found the class hard, but it was not because of Dr. Wallar. Has a way with words to really make you understand how biochem works. Go Blue!!!
His class is really hard, but he is fair. I actually thinks that he feels bad when he gives bad grades. I have never seen anyone try as hard to get students to come to his office to get help with biochemistry. I loved this class, and he has become my favorite professor at GVSU.
he is absolutely great. knows his stuff and knows how to portray it to others. i wish he taught every chemistry class. the class is hard, but he makes it so much more bearable. just suck it up and study, you'll enjoy him and the class. he'll put funny questions on the exams to ease the pressure!
I had this guy for lab but I really wish I had him for lecture too because he is the greatest prof! A great teacher while also be a great person in general at the same time. The guy has a great sense of humor but is also very knowledgeable and has experience in the field also.
He is such a great instructor. He helps you actually understand what in the world is going on in biochm. I took 232 before with Nikkel and was lost in the dark, ended up dropping it! Wallar is awesome..and he is so funny. He makes the entire lecture and discussion fun and interesting.

very hard to follow this professor. He changes exam dates often. Exams and quizes are outrageously confusing!!! Be prepared to put in maximal effort in return for much frustration and a barely passing grade. Try to take someone else if you can.
Great guy. Really cares about his students and is always willing to help. This class is hard, study A LOT and make sure you go over his practice exams, they are very helpful. Tells a lot of dorky jokes, lightens the class up a bit.
Really helped pull all prior chemistry together. Awesome class, but tests are absurd. He is nice and curves at the end of the semester. Learned a lot, but was very frusterated.
I thought his Biochemistry I course was awesome. Yes, it was a ton of info. Yes, he was one of the hardest profs that I've ever had. You could not memorize yourself through this course. But I am going to be an M.D., so I want to understand how things work. Dr. W was so nice and helpful posting keys, office visits, and Blackboard discussion forums.
By far one of the worst professors I have had in a long time.Spends most lectures talking about himself or his research or trying to be funny instead of teaching core material.Tests and quizzes do not test your knowledge, but are off the wall nothing learned about this questions.Nice guy,but tries too hard to be liked by students, instead of teachin
Awesome class and awesome prof. Waller was tough but fair. I was in his office getting help on homework and notes all the time (if his door was open, he would always help, even outside of his office hours). Pretty funny guy, but holy crap is he serious about the material. I recommend taking him in a heartbeat, but you better be ready to study!
LOL! Wallar got a chili..sweet. He works his ass off to make the class rock. He can be a bit intimidating just 'cause he's so frickin' sharp, but he's a spectacular resource and is ALWAYS willing to help. Expects you to use your head. Tests are kinda tricky, but always entertaining.
Wallar is a great prof - take him if you can. The class was really difficult but it was worth it. Wallar was always willing to help out and answer questions. His exams weren't easy at all, but you should do ok if you work hard, go to class, pay attention, and ask questions.
Wallar is the kind of professor that I have really learned from. Not just biochemistry, which I now appreciate way more than I ever thought I would, but I gained some confidence by doing fairly well in his class (but it was NOT easy). He is always willing to help, jokes around a lot, but he is very serious about class. He's my fav prof at GVSU.
He rocked!! The class was tough, but you could tell that he loved biochemistry. He made the lectures as fun as he could, but his exams were really tough. Study really hard, ask questions, and you will do fine. By the end of the class, I liked biochemistry so much that I might even take the second semester.
Whoever said Wallar was the "worst" prof is full of it. Wallar is by far the BEST fricken prof I have EVER had at GV. He is funny but it adds to lecture, never takes away from it. Tests are hard but it's a little thing called effort and you'll do fine. Plus he's always, and I mean always, available to answer questions. I have endless respect forhim
He was a GREAT biochem prof. i really recommend him. He is funny and helpful. Take him if you can
I had him last semester, great teacher willing to help very funny and interesting. He gives quizzes and practice exams but his exams are extremely difficult. The only reason i received a B- is because this was my second time taking it and he is very willing to help out. I wouldn't not recamened him but i also wouldn't tell you to not take him.
Professor Wallar is a really really great teacher. He loves what he's doing, loves it when you try hard, and hates it when you don't and even more when you cheat. He makes things easy to understand, is orginized, and wont take any crap form students. It's a hard class no matter who your proff is so you might as well have a fun one.
It's a hard class but this professor makes it fun and he is absolutly hillarious all the time. He loves what he teaches and loves it even more when you love what he teaches. He hates to see you do poorly and hates it even more to see you cheating. Nice guy, Fair exams, fair grader. I'm so glad I got him for this class!
He is a fun guy, but this class is really difficult. He will go out of his way to help any student who needs help though. The class material is really interesting, and I appreciate how he tries to relate our material to the health profession. Just study hard and ask any questions that you may have. I wish I could have him for another class!
Dr. Wallar was probably my favorite prof at GV! He loves what he does and puts alot of genuine effort into teaching, very responsive to email questions. Biochem is a tough course, but his tests are fair. I came into the course dreading yet another chm, but left wishing I could take him again! You won't be disappointed with Dr. Wallar!
Prof. Wallar is a very brillant guy who knows alot about biochemistry however sometimes confuses you with his knowledge. His exams are super challenging. He is always there to answer your questions and wants you too succede.
honestly, he is the best prof that i have had yet. his class is hard, i mean really hard. but it so interesting, and he is always willing to help. plus, his lectures are pretty funny sometimes. just study hard, ask lots of questions, and the class will be fine. understanding the 'why' biochem material is awesome for my interest in nursing
He was tough but fair. I studied the hardest that I've ever studied, but I think that I did pretty well. He was really cool about answering tons of questions over e-mail, even late at night. He is funny and likes to joke a lot with students. He makes a tough subject really fun and interesting. Take him if you get the chance!
This class is extremely hard but Dr. Wallar is the best prof that can teach this class. I thought the class was pointless but he made it reasonable to get through.
One of the best professors I've had at GV! He is incredibly patient and helpful with questions. You can tell he really wants his students to succeed. He is hilarious; we would always talk about music and tattoos and stuff in our early morning labs. Definitely take him, he'll make chemistry a little more fun!
Awesome Prof. Tests are hard but come mainly from his notes. He is a very lenient grader as well.
Waller is one of the better chemistry profs at GV. He has personality, and mixes up his lectures with his often self deprecating humor. He is effective and clear in his lectures and his notes are very easy to follow. Yes, biochem 461 is difficult, but Waller is a good investment if you are willing to invest yourself in the class.
Some people should not teach, this is one.Funny if you're there to laugh. Gives information with out purpose or origen, and will talk about random topics, like his research, or medical conditions the second week of class when no one knows anything about biochem? I ask my self, and? If he is interrupted he will lose his thought, and move on.
Such an amazing teacher. He REALLY knows his stuff & he is apart of very interesting research. Helps the students so much and is very passionate about what he teaches.
Wallar makes learning Biochemistry fun. He is ALWAYS willing to help if you need to ask him questions outside of class. He gives notes that are specific and follow the book. He genuinely cares about his students.
Wallar is ALWAYS willing to help if you have questions, he genuinely cares about his students. His notes are specific and follow the book. He makes learning biochemistry fun.
Wallar is AMAZING! Definitely take CHM 461 with him, or don't take the class at all. Super helpful, super clear, if you master the old quizzes and homework you will be more than ready for the exams. Highly recommend! (Also, he's hilarious- always a plus.)
Very funny, intelligent, and makes class interesting. I received an (A) in CHM 461 this past semester. His class is very easy, if you study, and learn the material. If you have anything negative to say about this professor, I strongly suggest you re-evaluate yourself first. You get out what you put in.
Great prof, really cares about his students and wants them to understand the material. Tells jokes which makes class more enjoyable. Expects more out of his students than the other CHM 230 classes which makes it more difficult. His tests are tough, in order to do well one must attend class and do the homework and extra handouts.
Dr. Wallar is a great professor to take for biochem. The class is tough, but Wallar makes it manageable with his lighthearted and hilarious lectures. He does a great job of teaching the material, but he's an incredibly smart guy and he won't let you forget it. I found him to have an arrogance about him, but nonetheless he really knows his stuff!
Great prof. I am only half way through chem 230 and I am very pleased with the way he runs his lectures and discussions. cares for his students and overall just wants you to do well and understand material. he makes class interesting and tries to put a little chemistry humor into it, which makes it not so bad.
Dr. Wallar is hilarious but slightly arrogant. I personally didn't mind it though. He is passionate about biochemistry and lets his class know right away they will have to work for their grade. He is fair and his expectations are clear. Most quizzes are group and they are announced ahead of time. Great class and great teacher; Recommended!
Dr. Wallar is a great professor for biochem lab. I had him at 8AM in CHS and he kept us all awake. His feedback is very useful and I learned a lot about science writing from him. Highly recommended!
Exams are very similar to lecture notes. He also provides practice exams, which tremendously help for preparation. Tough material but Wallar makes it manageable. Funny guy and very helpful.
He is a great professor who knows his material very well. The class is tough over all (no matter who you have), so if you want an A you will have to work for it. Overall though he is one of the better Chm profs I've had, and is willing to help anyone succeed in his class!
Biochem is a tough class to begin with so there are going to be people who hate. But if you are willing to put in the time and energy for this class take it with him!! He is so helpful and you learn A TON. He curves the exams a good amount. Don't be afraid to ask him questions hes super nice and cares about you. Loved his clear teaching style.
Overall, Wallar wasn't the worst prof I've ever had. He seems like a really nice guy but I'm not a big fan of how he sets up his notes and his exams. If you need help, you can ask but don't wait until the end like me. It helps if you color code his notes and focus on the small details in the notes, not the overall picture. He's pretty funny too.
Didn't think organic/bio chem was going to be a class I would enjoy but Wallar was super fun and he taught the subject matter well. He expects a lot out of you, but if you work hard and ask for help, you can get an A. Use different colors when you're taking notes. He wants you to succeed, you just have to work hard. Overall a great professor.
Dr Wallar is easily one of my favorite professors at Grand Valley. He keeps things light and entertaining and he genuinely cares about his students. He gives you everything you need to succeed and his notes are all you need to study for the exams. It's a tough course no matter who you have but I definitely recommend him.
Great class. He was super easy going. Exams and quizzes were tough but if you showed up to class and took notes you'll do fine. Do the practice exams (basically identical) Hands down best prof I've had at GV and would take again in a heart beat.
He makes lecture interesting with jokes, movie references, and great ways to remember a lot of what is taught. There is a lot of memorization in this class, but he makes it bearable. Discussion is mandatory, but lecture is not. He posts some notes online, but not enough to rely on them to skip class. Would definitely recommend him.
Lectures are well-organized, and he makes them entertaining and engaging. Lots of movie references and jokes. Everything is well explained, and he's happy to help you if you don't understand the material. Fantastic professor. Would gladly take again.
He is very enthusiastic and funny in class. He has great, unique ways to explain subjects that can come across confusing. The class in general is a hard course. 10/10 recommend taking his class
The tests are the hardest thing I have ever done. The final is also cumulative. Class is great but I had to study every waking second I had.
Professor Wallar is one of the best professors I've had. He is hilarious and is a very good teacher. He gives outlined notes that he fills out with you in lecture. His online homework is helpful, but not too time consuming. He cares about his students. Although this class was difficult, it has been very enjoyable thanks to Professor Wallar.
Professor Wallar is one of the best professors you can take at GVSU. He keeps the class very interesting with his jokes and movie references. CHM 232 is an extremely difficult course however and will require majority of your time. His exams are tough but doable just have to put in the hours studying.
Really cares about how his students do and goes out of his way to help. Even set up a study group for students and responded very quickly esp the night before exams to emails. Very clear explanations. This is a tough class no matter who you take. Keeps long lectures interesting and always tells jokes and gives good examples. Super helpful, TAKE HIM
This class was very difficult, but doable. The content overall isn't any harder than your typical upper-level science courses, but the exams are very hard and pretty much the only grades. Doing well in lab will help your grade out at the end though. Had him at 8 am and he made the best of it and was always cracking jokes. Would for sure take again
Reason I got B+ on 3 exams was bc of silly mistakes from reading too fast. I got A- on 1 exam & also the cumulative Final, & ended the class w/ an A. The online homework & doing well in Lab definitely helps! He also curved a little in the end. Handwritten lecture notes. Waller's HILARIOUS, I find myself enjoying the class even at 8am. TAKE HIM!!
Brad was such a good Biochem prof. He really showed you exactly what was going to be on quizzes/exams. He had fun while teaching and he has his students best interest in mind. He is always available for help outside of class, and he explains the material really well. He is a great prof to take if you are debating between a couple biochem profs.
I'm torn with him because he is one of the funniest professors I've had, but I feel now that we are at the end, much of harder content is being rushed and not ample time to know it thoroughly. His tests are difficult, but they are doable. Study the practice exams. You just have to study a lot and keep up on the material. Take him if you can.
I love Brad Wallar. One of my favorite profs ever. Take him if you can. He doesn't include details that aren't relevant. His quizzes are usually participation based, but you still need to try hard on them. He's definitely the funniest professor I have ever had. He's not as scary as he might seem, but he will tell you like it is.
Professor Wallar was an funny and amazing professor. I really wish I wouldve got closer to him sooner. Lectures were always interesting and I never found myself getting bored. Biochemistry is hard no matter the professor but I would take it with him in a heartbeat . Hes very clear on what you should know and exams were based off whats on notes.
Prof. Wallar is one of the best profs Ive had at gv. He makes class enjoyable and is always willing to help if you take the time to ask. His expectations are fair on exams and he does a great job explaining concepts. I would take him again in a heartbeat. Definitely recommend!
I'm rating him a 2 to help balance things out, but realistically he's like a 3.5. He's kind of a cool guy, but I think he's more charismatic than he is a good teacher. Not a bad teacher, but I feel that at least half of the time in that class is completely wasted with irrelevant, or non important fluff. An A in this class is definitely attainable.
Dr. Wallar is easily one of the best professors I've had at gv and I highly recommend taking him for biochem. His lectures are very entertaining - he's hilarious and loves to crack jokes to keep the class engaged. The class is graded based on 3 exams, the final, and quizzes(which are mostly participation-based). He wants to see his students succeed
Best Professor ever!!
Nice & wants students to succeed. BUT I did not learn well with his style of teaching whatsoever. He used solely pre-prepared powerpoints, & would re-write them out in lecture. You are graded on only 4 exams and 5 quizzes. Class was lecture heavy so lots of notes, he did not break down the basics enough and simplify them, so be prepared to read.
He can't be trusted he likes flat coke.
Great professor- funny and you can tell he enjoys his job and knows what he's doing! Cares about his students and WANTS to help you! "Help me, help you" is a motto he goes by and he stands by it! Make sure to ask for help when needed- he is always willing to help!
Wallar is an amazing professor! He really cares about his students and is always willing to help out. I personally didn't do well with how he taught so definitely if you are confused go to his office hours or chem success center.
He's super awesome! I had him for an 8am 3 days a week and even though it was difficult to get up that early, he made starting the day really easy. He's super open to questions and loves participation. He's super funny and his way of connecting the material to real life is awesome! 100% reccomend.
Tough material/class in general, however he made concepts very easy to understand. He was extremely helpful and genuinely cared about his students. Lots of extra credit , As long as you study and keep up with homework you will do fine, he also curves your grade at the end of semester.
Professor Wallar is a great instructor and person. He gave many life advice speeches, and in each lecture, he went over every step in great detail. He provided excellent real-life examples to help explain the material. The quizzes and practice problems prepared you perfectly for the exams. Overall, it was a great experience having him.
Favorite professor by far!
I 100% think that me getting the grade that I did (A) is because of Prof. Wallar. He is super passionate about what he does which I really appreciate. He gives us a great amount of resources to use as long as practice problems to do. he's very open to helping students that are struggling. His teaching style helped me so much. I recommend!
Very understanding and a great professor. Lectures were engaging but required taking notes outside of class. My only complaint is there isn't room for mistakes on exams.
Lectures are mostly practice problems. Great at encouraging you. Loves to make jokes and keep you motivated. Wants you to succeed. Understanding of personal issues. Will always offer to help. Stays up late grading so that we can get our exams/quizzes back to help study. Changed professors to take him specifically for CHM234.
Lectures are long and boring, with terrible handwriting. He tries to make jokes, but they are so flat. His past as a coach is most of his personality, and his “inspirational” quotes are unhelpful. Exams are somewhat fair if you study the notes. I wouldn't recommend him, but if you need to, just be ready for his personality.
Prof Wallar was the best. He super funny and wants you to want to succeed. He teaches in a flipped style, so you watch the lecture videos outside of class and work on problems in class. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory, but he did random attendance checks throughout the semester. 10/10 recommend him.
He was a great and funny dude but I did not learn from his teaching style at all. He taught a flipped class where we had to watch 3 hours of lecture videos per week at home. Then, we would go into lecture just for it to be repeated again. Quizzes were participation which helped boost grades.
