Amazing professor! He makes history really fun and worth learning. I actually looked forward to attending this class. It is an easy A if you pay attention which isn't so hard to do with him as your professor. You even get a CHEAT SHEET, front and back, typed or written, as tiny as you want! He reviews what will be on the test (no dates). TAKE HIM!
This class was fairly easy. I felt that his ideas and lectures were not very organized, skipped around a lot, but exams are straight forward. Grade based on Midterm, Final and weekly online discussion responses. You get an 8 x 11 cheat sheet front and back for exams. Easy class, just show up, do the work and take notes. P.S, DON'T DISRUPT CLASS
By far one of the best classes I've had here at PCC. I was fortunate enough to take his honors course so given the small class size, the class was modeled as a discussion seminar more so than a lecture. I've learned more from history than I did taking AP US History in high school. I highly recommend this course for all the insights gained.
Without a doubt a good teacher. His lectures are interesting. His only homework is to answer a discussion question online on the school's website weekly, even if his class is at PCC. I learned a lot about history in his class and I suggest you take him if you can.
Not a hard class, but quite boring lecture (guess this is just what history class should be) even though he tries to make it interesting. Maybe this is because I just don't quite get his jokes.
Dr. J's storytelling compels one's interest. He really likes participation, and reading is mandatory for the online discussions. Read over the weekend since he posts them on Sat. or Sun. Take good notes, and contribute to in-class discussions! The midterm is T/F and tricky, but the final and extra credit are essays via Canvas. Don't plagiarize!
Dr.J's lectures are interesting. What draws me to him is not only the fact that he's an engaging professor, but you can really tell that he loves what he does. He absolutely appreciates students who contribute to class participations (this is how he learns your name, and notices you). Very easy-going class, but also fun and interesting.
He made this history class such a joy to attend. He is very clear of what is expected of you in class and owns up to it. Pay attention, take notes, and enjoy his stories. History, after all, is always a story being told.
I didn't think I would've enjoyed the class the way I did. Dr.J provided me with interesting historical events by being an engaging teacher. He's very insightful. This is one of those classes where the textbook is mandatory! He also assigns online Canvas readings too. Participate in class because this is how he recognizes you! Overall, great!
He was very entertaining! I looked forward to going to his class. He is a really great teacher and gives good feedback on papers. He is very relaxed and easy going! I missed class a few times and it was no big deal at all. He is so funny!
We usually call Dr. Johnston, Dr. J. He is super laid-back and easy for an honors class. He is young and relatable to students. Dr. J gives positive feedback on your research papers and at the same time, accepts anyone's opinions. Dr. J is as easy as Dr. T.
Johnston is a great professor, just has a boring class. Their are weekly Canvas discussions on the weekly readings. Most chapters are to be read within a week. Their are also usually weekly class quizes on the readings and you could use notes you have taken. Midterm you can use a cheatsheet, the final you cannot.
If you're looking for honors credit, take Dr. J's History class. It is super easy and fun as you interact in a class discussion covering fun interesting topics. Dr. J will always be there for you as you do your research paper. He is easy as Uranga. SO HOT!!!
Professor Johnston was a good guy. His lectures were kind of boring and his humor was dry. This was a discussion class so most of the time spent in class is discussing readings with with other students. Reading assignments are long. I don't recommend this class with more than 15 credits. Paper was easy to write. Work for ALL points. He grades hard.
Professor Bradford Johnston is very disorganized, five books for one class! And all of them need to be thoroughly read and MEMORIZED! Or you will just be an idiot in the class. Besides that, amount of canvas reading is even equivalent to those five books. ONE TEST (final), ONE PAPER, for the entire semester! You suck one of it, you are near failing
Professor Johnston was fantastic! It was clear he loved what he taught which made his students love it and want to work hard. I definitely recommend this class. He is a challenging professor (the midterm and the final were what got me) and expects a good amount of work, however it was a class I would take over again if I could!
Dr. J is overly too difficult for Honors class. Take him and you'll learn a lot. What an inspirational speaker!!! Ohohoho. Dr. J is one of the most handsome professors out there!!! Super hawt! Your heart will melt but too much reading. Writing research paper is fun. The class felt like a family.
The class is pretty simple, his lectures are clear and the tests aren't too hard, although he likes messing with wording on tests to try to trip you up. There's a lot of reading assigned but the tests generally cover just lecture material.
Out of all the professors I've had in my two years of college, Prof. Johnston is the worst. He assigns way too much reading, grades students way too harshly, and is very disorganized. He expects you to read 5+ novels for the class, as well as 30+ primary sources. I would not recommend him to anyone. Avoid at all costs.
I took this class online and it was an easy A. He gives you quizzes and articles to read as well as discussion questions. The book isn't required, I barely opened it. His final for online is an ePortfolio. He is a tough grader so you have to review the grading scale and make sure you have everything before you turn assignments in.
Dr. Johnston has one of my fav teaching styles, crtical thinking. He allows you to make your own opinion based on readings and lecture. He is animated and quite lenient when it comes to grading. As long as you show an effort and evidence of doing the reading he is always willing to help. He does require weekly discussions on Canvas. Great class!
Dr Johnston gives the most informative and interesting lectures. Attendance is rarely taken, but his tests contain a lot of lecture material that doesn't appear in the book. Expect to write a lot, but if you are serious, take the time to read the book and explore on your own you will do very well. I would highly recommend his classes
Dr. J is a great educator. He is excited and loves what he does. I loved his class because he requires you to think and understand the topics. Focus on his lectures, but the readings are important. He doesn't take role, but dont miss class bc his lectures are super important and he makes them fun. DEF RECOMMEND!
Very boring professor. He also doesn't explain things very well. His study guides don't really help out with his test. Gives lots of quizzes so don't be late. Don't ever be late to his class actually. write down all his notes and what he says because that will save you for any test.
He is really passionate about the subject he teaches. His class was largely based on discussions because he wants to hear what YOU think.. Try to get on his good side by participating in class, and it's an easy A from their. The final and midterm wasn't too difficult. It's based on lectures so TAKE NOTES. I cannot stress that enough.
The guy is a real BRO! Funny teacher but he's really good. I cannot emphasize enough how taking notes is the most important thing you can do in his class. Write down everything he says. Posts discussions online and you have to read the chapters due and answer his questions b4 class. Quizes are open notes, tests aren't but provides study guides.
Tests: just the Final worth 52% of your grade. The only homework he assigns is weekly reading with discussion responses on canvas. The lectures are really long and he gets really distracted while lecturing. Half way through the semester he started just showing documentaries and did partial lecturing. overall okay lectures.
No midterm. Final is way too heavy. Very boring lecture. He gives everyone extra credit, so your effort turns out to be nothing. Very strict person. If you get 69.9%, don't expect he would let you pass. DONT TAKE HIM!
Class isn't mandatory but he takes roll sometimes and counts that towards your final grade. Also he tends to get off topic during lectures. He makes you think that your grade is based off of Canvas discussion posts but then you get the final (after not taking a test the whole semester) and it's cumulative and hard. I recommend taking his class P/NP
This is a class that I wish had more tests. Your grade is basically based off of a midterm and a final. He has you do weekly discussion responses on Canvas, but they're only 1 point each. I did all of them, and they only increased my grade by 5%. I did not enjoy this class at all.
Professor Johnston is a nice guy and will give you help if you ask but the Midterm and Final are really difficult and a low score on either can determine your grade for the entire class regardless of effort.
Dr. Johnston is a knowledgeable and witty teacher that is very passionate about history. That being said, his class would benefit from homework assignments or quizzes because as of now your grade is based on the midterm and final which are both tough. Take him if you want a challenge.
Looking at these comments makes me wonder if we are talking about the same Dr. J. Some students think he's awesome and some don't. Different people with different opinions is always the case. If you're going to take PCC seriously, take Dr. J. If you want an easy A, then don't.
Dr. J is a very enthusiastic guy who knows what he's talking about. If you already enjoy history his class is definitely for you. He was a pretty funny guy too. My only problem was that the grade was entirely homework. He didn't give a single test until the final. Not even a midterm.
Love this guy. Great energy and charisma. He's really funny, too. He definitely cares about his students. He's very fair and his goals/expectations of you are somewhat high, but that's where they should be in general. I highly recommend Johnston if you want a lively, intimate History class.
Dr. Johnston's lectures are very good. He likes interactive class discussions so don't be afraid to speak up. His discussion boards are only worth a point, but don't be lazy and not do them because they basically make up the tests. He is really a quality teacher so if you are interested in actually learning then definitely take him!
Johnston's class was very entertaining and comfortable. I would never mind going to this class because he is super funny and he is SOOOOO cute!! I am someone who hates history yet he made me enjoy it because of his humor and the way he taught his class. There is a lot of homework involved and his tests are hard but his class I would take him again!
Love this guy! Definitely one of the greatest teachers I've ever had and actually made me consider majoring in history for the first time in my life. No joke.
The tests are very hard, and I personally have never been big on history. However, he knows the tests are hard and he cuts you slack in other areas. He assigns weekly discussions (i admit they are time consuming), but if you do them all and show up to class there is no way you will fail. And the best part is: You will actually learn.
He was such a great, funny professor! I have never been fond of history but his lectures were never boring. I would take him again if I could I learned so much from his class!
Pretty good professor, knowledgeable in his field of history. A few things I've learned from the class is to take down notes during his lectures. For his exams and tests you have to learn about the ideas behind the history. Be prepared for every class, and look at his guidelines for mid-term and final exam. Do those simple things and you'll pass.
Go to class every day and participate in discussions and u will get tons of extra credits. He likes people to participate in his lectures. Funny and nice guy. Like his accent. AHAHAHHAHAHAHA
In his class you must be willing to do your research on the lectures given. He gives you general information and its up to you to follow through with the optional reading material on the syllabus or P.C.C's Staffords Library. This is College afterall. His teaching methods are diffrent, but its also refreshing. No book Saves you money.
So many papers, grades very strictly, assigns TONS of complex historical articles every week in place of a textbook, lectures not clear nor necessary, gives pop quizzes on the articles, OVERALL NOT RECOMMENDED
History 5A was a very DIFFICULT class which required extensive historical research papers that were expected to be written perfectly like a Historian in order to earn a good grade. Lectures were not inspiring and quite boring, and there were numerous confusing and complex historical articles assigned for reading every week.
This class was unnecessarily difficult and stressful. Historical articles are assigned every week instead of a textbook, but this just makes the concepts even more confusing and convoluted, and not much instruction was given on how to actually write the papers. Lectures were not helpful, and I truly regret signing up for this class.
Cool professor that seems passionate about what he's teaching. No textbook needed, most of the content you'll be learning comes from lectures, and weekly articles he assigns. Your grade will be based off of 3 essays, but if you pay attention in class, and do good research you'll do fine.
Didnt have a good experience in History 5A. He doesnt assign a textbook, but I honestly wish that he did because the weekly historical articles that he assigns confused rather than clarified the content. His lectures were not very clear and your grade will be based off of 3 essays that require SUBSTANTIAL outside research - lectures irrelevant
Dr. Johnston gave me a lot of insights of what a university professor looks at. Go to his office hours, read the reading he assigned and you'll be fine. He didn't test us on the information he taught us, but his whole grading system is based on 3 essays, and he only takes 2 best grades out of the three. Choose him and you won't regret it.
I took his His 001B. His Lecture base on his own ppt and little writing. No textbook. Good lecture. give u study guide. you need to read lots of paper for weekly homework. He respect your own ideas.
If you like to reading and criticize history, you should take his class. This class required to read lots of paper, however, this class easy to get a A. He provide study guide for mid and final test.
Dr. Johnston is an amazing professor that teaches a class by providing great lectures on History. Although there is a lot that he would go over in his lectures, everything that would be in exams are all based on his lectures. Do the weekly homework, review his notes, and write down important information for the test for getting a good grade.
Reading assignments weekly and not much exams. Hes very funny and he doesnt use textbooks. His finals include an essay.
The class is made up of discussions and quizzes. He assigned a 900 word BOOK REVIEW paper and a 1800-2100 word research paper. The discussions are worth a decent amount but the book review and research paper is the majority of your grade.
Expected to do a research paper and a book review for a 3 unit class in the Winter, combined with an extraordinary amount of discussions. Hard grader overall. Do not recommend.
This teacher assigns papers that are unreasonable for an online history class! He expects his students to write a research paper and book review within a short amount of time. Also, his discussions sometimes consist of 600+ words just for an initial post.
I recently took History 7B with this professor and he was pretty difficult. He requires annotated bibs due almost everyday of the week. No quizzes though which is good but be aware of the midterm and final (essays and only an index card cheat sheet). Got an B but this course with this professor isn't an easy A. Be sure to do ALL assignments!!
Took him online for Winter and it was harder than his reviews had made it seem. The answer to his quizzes could be easily found on google, which was nice, but his writing assignments were quite hard, very long, and harshly graded. You can get an A in his class, but you do have to prepare to work. A Lot. Also not helpful when you email him
do not even take him. If you email him a question or need help with an assignment he won't get back to you for another week. He is very unorganized and so rude. He gives heavy lectures and a lot of assignments. He is the worst professor I have ever taken in history and in PCC. Save yourself the trouble and don't take him.
let me tell you why he failed me. he said i needed to take an english class. He was so rude to me. Also, if you email him he won't reply back to you for another week. He is unorganized and he gives you a book review to do in less then 5 days as your final. it was too late for me to drop i wish i knew sooner. please dont take him listen to everyone.
Expects students to write around 1000+ words for discussions (5 total) with a book review (1500 words). Every assignment is worth AT LEAST 200 points and does not provide specific feedback as to how to improve. Overly tough grader. Expects a lot in a short span of time, all of this to be done in 1 month (Winter Online). DO NOT TAKE HIM.
If you are looking for something light or have a busy schedule this is not the class u should take. His intentions are good but his standards are to high. Its a lot of reading. You must answer the questions in a specific manner. I recommend you dont take it.
I absolutely loved this class! the professor was extremely funny and his lectures were extremely informational and enjoyable! Think the only reason people gave him a bad score is because you actually have to put in work to receive a good grade. His assignments were very easy to do, only one assignment a week and the rest is focused on participation
Dr. J was pretty laid back. He kind of abandoned us after we went online for covid. He finally made himself available through email. As long as you read you should be okay in his class. But it is A LOT of reading. He gives good feedback and responds promptly. Attendance wasn't mandatory but suggested. He doesn't assign hw but again, you MUST read!!
Super great, took as a summer class. Lots of reading, but the book was interesting so it was fine. There are quizzes for each chapter, but easy if you read. 1 Discussion and short essay every week. Gives great feedback
Professor Johnston is a pretty cool Professor. He assigns a lot of readings and gives you quizzes on them. Professor makes you discuss primary sources and write short responses each week. Overall if you keep up with the reading and assignments it is an easy-going class. The greatest thing is that he gives you feedback and professor skateboards.
I took Professor Johnston in Spring 2020 and it was a great experience. Before COVID he lectured quite a lot but once we went virtual, he gave us a PDF textbook to read out of so we took quizzes on that and then had a final exam. History overall isn't a super hard subject so as long as you take notes on what you read, you'll be fine. Fast responder
Super chill, students are asked to submit eight discussion responses along with the midterm and final which he gives the prompts to beforehand. He doesn't ask you to read the textbook but you can use it as a reference for the homework, he posts really concise and thorough lecture videos and provides some interesting readings too.
Professor Johnson is a great and caring professor. He gives you one assignment a week and it's only a small discussion. His grading is very lenient and his lectures prepare you. You get a choice on what to write about in your discussion out of the options he provides for you. One of the best history classes I've ever taken.
Johnston's a solid professor. His assignments mostly consist of discussion boards, and then a midterm and final essay, so as long as you keep up with the reading you should pass with flying colors. He has office hours at 10 am almost every day and gives good feedback when you reach out for it. I'd recommend that for essay revisions!
I have taken this professor twice, in person and online (covid). His in-person lectures are AMAZING. His classes are easy to pass if you complete the reading. The online class consisted largely of essay responses for a discussion board (many questions/definitions required, totalling about 1300 words per week). Homework heavy, but highly recommend!
It was an online class so there was a weekly discussion board for homework and a paper in addition to the final. It's a lot of reading and writing but the articles he provides are interesting. Gives you the link to the textbook so you don't need to buy it. Not a difficult class and he sometimes leaves some good or interesting comments on your work.
He gives WAY too much work and expects way too much considering this is a general education required class. He will mark you down points for the tiniest of things, and doesn't really have clear grading criteria in my opinion. He is also hard to get ahold of, which sucks. On the plus side, it was a no cost textbook class.
history classes are typically work-heavy given lots of readings and discussions, so prepare yourself for that. asides from that, there arent any EC given, but i believe he isnt too strict with grading discussions, and he also gives you a sec chance for your paper in case you missed the deadline or want to make changes to the first submission.
I took Professor Johnston for the summer history class for my prerequisites. It was an online course. We did not have much work to do. There were only a few reading assignments and one discussion per week and one final exam and one paper. Overall, easy A, as long as you do the work. Also he is a fair grader.
He's demanding and his standards are way too high, don't take him if you are looking for something easy.
he's ok. really entertaining, maintains good standing w/ the class, and very easygoing. however, you have to pay much attention bc this is a lecture focused class. he's also very good at keeping historical opinions neutral and is open to feedback and discussion.
Dr. Johnston is a great professor. He's very easygoing and tells stories about his past. He does his best to present history in an unbiased way. There are no homework assignments. Your grade will be based solely on your Midterm and Final Exam, each worth 200 points. This class is easy if you are interested and well versed in European History.
Prof J is a knowledgeable man with a strong passion for his field. There was never a time when he did not know the answer to a question off the top of his head. Fair amount of reading, and your grade is dependent on only a few assignments, but extra credit can help balance this out. Not the most interesting lecture, but overall good class.
He is a good professor but his exams are very hard. And the class is graded by 3 things an essay and 2 exams so if you flunk your exams you can basically say goodbye to your grade. But honestly if you study you'll get an A. He also gives extra credit which helps.
Dr. Johnston is very knowledgeable in the subject and is always there to help students with questions. The course is lecture-based, with assigned reading. The course is graded on one paper, a mid-term, and a final exam. There are a few extra credit opportunities so take them when offered. Really cool guy.
One of the coolest college professors I've ever had. A bit much on the reading end but manage your time for his homework and you'll be able to get it done. His tests are the most important factor to pass so study up! His lectures are funny and his feedback is straightforward. Great class for nonhistory majors and history majors at the same time.
He lectures every day for the whole class period. Two tests, a mid term and final, and some papers but nothing major. He's very laid back and not very much interested in his class. I sat ini front and I'm sure he never knew my name lol. All good, I got an A, but I wouldn't take again.
Dr. Johnston is one of my favorite professors at PCC! In the class I took, there was a midterm and a final that determine your entire grade, but these are easy to study/prep for if you pay attention to his lectures/take notes. Attendance is mandatory, but he'll make it worth your while with fun and entertaining explanations of historical events!
I very much enjoyed his video lectures; they were to the point yet insightful. The readings were a bit high level but manageable. It was primarily writing assignments although the writing wasn't very difficult. Just stay on top of your assignments and do them to the best of your ability and you will get an A.
I took two of his online classes. He replies to emails timely and grades work regularly. He's writing heavy and you need to do lots of reading to answer questions, which make up the majority of your grade. He encourages a lot of independent thinking in writing. Many of his video lectures are also handy and informative.
don't take this class. this guy wants you to a 5 part reading/ study with 5 long lecture videos as the introduction. than he wants you to reply to 2 people with 250 word response's. when I asked him for clarification he told me to read the instructions... its clear what I read did not make sense. this guy is a joke.
Took his history 1A back in Spring. His lectures are disorganized and all over the place. I found it hard keep up with what he was going on about and takes notes at the same time. The homework video lectures are just as disorganized and most of the readings are inaccessible for those with disabilities. You are also only graded on midterm and final.
Easy workload & assignments. I took the half semester 8 week course. There's one discussion response per week. Midterm & final. Grading system kind of sucks tho. I had 100% on all assignments then got Bs on both exams and ended up w a B in the class. Not bad tho
Great professor, He is really funny and makes lectures interesting, on the other hand, he does not assign any work so your grades all fall on the Mid-term and Final. He does offer extra credit and rounds up your grade. I would recommend choosing this professor if you need this class to complete your general ed requirements. super chill.
Pretty easy class, but the midterm and final was worth 85% of your grade. He would not give any extra credit, but I got some extra credit at the end of the semester.
Took this class over the winter and it went by quickly! Each week there was 1 discussion which asked questions from his lectures and reading. If you keep up with the class and turn everything in on time he's a fair grader. I would take him again!
Professor Johnson is a confusing grader and who gives the whole semester 2 points extra credit. The rest is ok.
If you need history, take this professor for GE requirement as its super easy. For the 8-week class, ~550 word discussion each week and MCQ mid-term and final. He has office hours every week if needed, but the class is very straightforward.
I took this course fully online so it was pretty easy not at all difficult but I did not retain or learned anything because it was online.
This is my favorite history teacher that I have ever had, I took this class in person spring 2024 and has a great time. very great and informative lectures. the tests aren't super hard, they are online and there is usually a multiple choice and short answer.
Boring lectures, seems like he is teaching to a 6th grade class. Also very rude and condescending. I hope PCC admins take note of this. Kindness goes a long way, and he doesn't seem to care about responding to your e-mails in a timely manner, if at all. I've had some great professors at PCC. Bradford Johnston is not one of them.
Lectures every day, but manages to make it fun and engaging.
He lectures every day, so if you don't learn that way then do not take it. If you like lectures, then I recommend the class.
I took Pro. Johnston's 8-week HIST 07A course over the fall semester. Each week we were assigned one short 10 question quiz and a discussion post. The discussion posts were quite lengthy but relatively easy. The final was 3 short essay questions. The textbook is free. Feedback is minimal. Take his course!
I took this class online and it was an 8 week course(terrible idea). Professor Johnston was confusing teacher, his grading was always confusing with minimal to no feedback, for an online class there were not enough assignments and the final was worth way too much. Don't take this class online you will not retain any info and will be confused.
Professor Johnston is a good professor. His lectures were pretty funny. Overall, if you want to take this class, you can thank me later in the long run
Very harsh on the grading and gives very limited feedback. Was getting assignments back and the class average was a C or D each week.
I'm taking this class online and we do discussion posts every week. He grades pretty strictly and I only ever got feedback on one of my discussion responses so I don't have much to go off of if I wanted to improve my grade. Quizzes are easy if you look up the answers. Rarely gives a grade above a C on discussions and his lectures don't help much.
Professor Johnston's HIST007B is a straightforward course. With light weekly work, the class is manageable. Exams are crucial, so studying is key. unstuckstudy can help prep for tests. Overall, a good GE option.
Great Professor!
Great history lectures!
If you don't feel comfortable with hunkering down and carefully reading all of the sources, or watching a lectures then, no, you shouldn't take the class. But, the professor is great, he gives you an clear grading rubric and as long as you put in a little effort then you will get an A. Just do not procrastinate and work hard, and you will be fine.
The workload is manageable, but if you're someone who won't put effort into the class don't take him. He grades a little harshly but eases up if you show him that you're trying. Go to his office hours and ask for help/feedback and he will definitely help you out a lot and ease up on grading once he sees that you care and want his help.
I took him over winter and my last review got taken down. This professor assigns insane amounts of reading and video lectures. Passing is doable, but be prepared to devote much of your week to taking notes alone. He grades very harshly and provides minimal feedback. Weekly quiz and discussion post where you answer 3 prompts (of 300 words each).
His summer Hist 1A class had many informative pre-recorded short lectures + documents that we had to read weekly (This took ~4-5 hours per week). This class was well structured and he had zoom meetings that he would let us know about if we wanted to talk about assignments/grades. Make sure to stay on track with turning in work! Great Professor!!!
your grade for this class is based on very few assignments, so you need to put effort into your work. grading is pretty straightforward and feedback is given to the class as a whole through announcements. i read all the assigned readings, watched some video lectures, and passed the class with an A. spent about two hours per week on this class.
He is a strict grader. He critiques every word like an English teacher and doesn't give feedback. I asked about my grade, he told me to figure out what I did wrong. The readings are very long, and there's no extra credit since he believes in "quality over quantity." I wouldn't recommend taking this class. Save yourself time.
European History course here, and we barely had like 2 writing assignments and a midterm. People in his class just play on their phones/laptops, and he doesn't care. A pretty passionate person when it comes to his lectures. Would recommend it if you're interested in European history. I'm just disappointed by how brief history is, but understandable
its honestly a pretty easy class, u just need to do the work, just put the work in and you'll get the grade. its a LOT of reading tho... too much..... so u need to develop a system for that.... u get a lot of points so even if u miss a couple assignment, u can tank it.
