participation part of grade, seems to like only certain people, sucks
i liked him although his course work was very different then most teachers I have had. I think he goes out and tries to find books with the strangest plots possible
Very intresting lectures. Has very unique material compared to most other courses. Very negotiable when it comes to deadlines and topics. Very liberal, loves people who debate and speak up in class.
Fun Class...A lot of papers, but otherwise no homework!
I found his class to be disturbing.
Tends to get off topic when you bring up politics. Is very anti-gov't and will express his opinion on many topics. Very helpful on papers since he's read a lot of stuff and will basically give you information if you ask. Easy class for almost everyone.
Class is very odd, he would rather debate then actually do anything related to class work. Even though it is an odd class i like it a lot and keeps the day interesting.
I think this was a very interesting class...it was very subjective, but I liked that
My first ever A in an English class...Wasn't a class I dreaded, but don't get him started on politics 'cause there's no stopping him. If your into different--go for it.
Awkward specimen...but incredibly easy. No final....hates utopia and possibly life.
way too opinionated!! - he presents the course as if it will be a discussion class...but in the end only his opinions are correct..it is pointless to have your own interpretation because if it doesn't match his -it will be wrong ....very frustrating
Very interesting, not a ton of work, as long as you keep up with the readings, brilliant man
if your into off-beat, nerdy guy that jumps around and class and always keeps you amused, then this is the class for you!!! never be afraid to voice your opinion
Loved this class. Liked that it was about issues that deal with us. Very interesting and I learned a lot. Offbeat and different. Not boring.
Not very approachable.
Thought he was an awesome teacher in the end. Will come across as a Prof who expects alot but soon enough you will see that he isnt that way. He grades harder then hell on your papers but lets u rewrite them. Participate and an A is possible, I got one
He is a very hard grader. On my last paper he gave me a C/D and I went and talked to him and he said that I needed to anticipate the argument, but he gave another girl a C and she didn't even write on the correct topic!!! Avoid if possible
not good
Very good prof. Encourages students to analyze not only the assigned readings, but also how they can be applied to our culture today. Expects participation, which isn't tough--he entertains most opinions. Don't be afraid to speak up. Have enjoyed the class and learned a lot.
This guy loves his job. He keeps you interested from day one. Work is required, but if you keep up and talk once in awhile in class you're good to go. I would recommend him to anyone!
He's a very smart guy but this class is just too much. He expects a lot of participation, which sucks. A small plus is that he lets you re-write your papers. He should though since he's such a hard grader on them!
This is my second class by him. Just LOVE the class. He's smart, passionate about literature, and very intellegent. This is my favorite professor out of all that I've had so far. I feel like I'm actually learning and engaged in the classroom. I recommend him to anyone.
he is all about participation. don't participate and he wont like you at all.
Funnest English class I have ever taken. Challenges you intellectually and readings/discussions are pretty interesting. If you hate doing grammar, take this class because it isnt the main focus, unlike a lot of other English classes I have heard of. Need to put in time to earn good grade.
I thought this was a writing class. Focused a lot more on literature. Enjoyed the lectures, he can keep your attention. If you put time into your work you will get a good grade. Nice Guy.
I love butterfield. I took a few of his classes, and he's just an amazing professor probably my favorite professor on campus. discussions are fun and very interesting. hard grader, but if you participate you will be fine. very intelligent man, and he will test you and your intellect in class.
I loved Butterfield. HW includes a lot of reading and a one page single spaced reading response. He's very intelligent and challenges you to think and speak up in class. The most interesting and funny class I've had yet and probably one of the better Eng prof on campus. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Great professor, likes to go off on tangents but you learn a lot about the real world. Class involves a lot of philosophy and thinking...writing emphasis so be prepared for that
he is really a wonderful teacher, this was by far my favorite class. i am definety going to take as many classes from him as possible
butterfield is the man - I hate writing papers, but for some reason I always seemed to do fine .... You grade yourself on about half of your grade at the end of the semester... put a little effort into it and you will do just fine
Really gets deep into his assignments. wants you to think alot. Class discussions alomost every class. The bad thing is that he makes you write like 5 papers. Not that hard though. NO FINAL EXAM!!
I learned a lot from this class.. Butterfield is really layed back but likes things (especially essays) done a certain way.. just do your homework, participate in class here and there, and you will do fine.
He tries hard to engage students to think for themselves. I found it easy to get an A in the class but those who don't do homework need not apply.
lots of reading. quiz everyday. one paper. one final. tries hard to get everyone involved in class discussions. isn't afraid to speak his mind in order to make others think.
Worst english class ever! he should not be teaching a writing class, its all philosophy. Extremely boring classes, goes off on tangets about anything, and everything. Avoid at all cost
The class was actually very easy, the classes goes very fast and is extremely interesting. If you do your homework you will have absoltuly no difficulty with the class. Highly recommended!!
Bradley Butterfield is off his rocker. I spend each class watching the clock and trying my hardest to fight off the urge to pull out all of my hair.
Butterfield is the BEST professor i've ever had. I learned so much; this class forever has changed me. He makes writing easy by choosing interesting topics and having a class discussion on them to get ideas rolling. If you buy the magazine "The Week", which is an awesome magazine, you get extra credit. If i could I'd take this class again.
Even though at times the hour and a half drug out, he knew it and tried to make class entertaining and spark converastaion. Was very animated and always brought laughter among us. This class really stimulated me to think out side the box and he brought up interesting topics. Overall, not too difficult if you do the reading. GREAT PROFESSOR.
Great professor. Funny. Ok class... teaches you how to think in different ways and be open minded. Some of the literature was a bit dry.. but then some was pretty interesting. Highly recommended.
This was hands down the best class i have ever taken. I never liked reading literature before this class, but now I feel like I understand literature, art, human nature, the world, myself... everything more. Warning- if you are uncomfortable with sexuality and too immature to handle discussing it openly, avoid this class.
This is what a college course should be! He is one of the best professors I have ever had and I have learned so much, not only about literature but about myself as well. The class is intense but I recommend taking Butterfield!
This class was awesome. Even if you did have to do a little more work it was well worth it. Class was interesting and at least I wasn't stuck learning about something boring like math or science, you actually have to think on many different levels. Take this course if you're at all interested in being educated.
I don't think that I've had a professor that cared more about their students. He works hard to make literature fun and interesting and communicates it in a manor that can provide insight for anyone. He tries to get everyone to participate and is extremely open to new ideas . Great class even for those of us without an intrinsic love of literature.
Crazy guy... I love the way he gives mini-biographies about the philosophers we have to read, he makes them human and likes to tell really funny/ scandelous things about them. Critical Theory is a hard class, but he is a fair grader. Participate and make sure to read every week and you'll be fine.
Horrible! Do not take him! Does not give you a good grade unless he likes you and you talk a lot in class. Get on his good side and you will get an A+ but otherwise you will have to work your butt off to get a decent grade. Worst class I've ever taken...
This guy is a very good professor, stimultes a lot of deep thoughts. He is very liberal and i am not. We argued with eachother on a daily basis during presentations, but because i iritated a lot of people and got things stirred up, he liked me and gave me good grades. show you are thinking critically and you will do fine
great professor, inrtroduces a new way of looking at things, people that think he is a bad teacher are lazy
Awesome class, makes you think and take different perspectives on all sorts of issues, not too much homework and no final, very interesting debates and such
Probably the best english teacher i have ever had..Class is easy and what he expects of you is spelled out the first day of class. If you cant write papers then dont take him but if your intereseted in a cool english class thats finally not boring i strongly suggest taking butterfield for an instructor..
Great Prof, interesting views. He always throws philosophy into the mix. If you don't agree with him, don't get caught up in that. HE LIKES PEOPLE TO ARGUE WITH HIM. One of the most annoying things I've heard is that he grades you according to whether you agree with him. He is great, if you have to take English, take him.
Free your mind...butterfield adds some good philosophy into all the lit. Fun class, but the quizes after each reading assignment are annoying. Interesting discussions and literature that is applicable to today's world. If you're a hardcore Christian you might get offended.
Butterfield keeps class interesting! he is very helpful when it comes to writing papers, but he will make you work for your grade. If your willing to improve your writing skills and learn something useful in life, take him!
He is not a nice person. He will only give good grades if he likes you. He often makes you feel stupid in front of class. And he has harder assignments than the other classes. He grades you on participation. Not a fun class. Dont take english 110 with him!
great teacher! he likes to talk alot, but if you listen to what he is saying it will help you alot. he does everything he can to help you be the best writer possible. also, he understands that students write the best when they are interested in what they're writing about. take his class!
You need to do ALL of the reading. You can not skip it at all. He is pretty controversial when it comes to class discussions. Many of the readings are also...mature... You really have to work for your grade, so if you want an A, take a different professor. But over all he isn't the worst guy in the world, just extremely out spoken.
Excellent professor, keeps lectures very interesting, and is a very intelligent man. He has stories about everything, which add a nice flavor to the class. Very helpful... you just have to ask for it. He grades a lot on participation, so get your point known and DO THE READING
Awesome teacher, really gets you to know yourself.
easy class like 5 papers
He's great as a professor for first year students. He's understanding, but still pushes his students abilities with constructive feedback. I highly suggest taking his class if you're willing to learn and improve.
I took him for the trouble in utopia class, and I absolutely loved the class discussions. He loves to play devil's advocate to spur on conversation. Be sure to do the readings before class for the quizes and to be able to participate in class. Great teacher, but requires a bit of hard work!
He's different, but interesting, pretty enjoyable, recommend if you dont mind participating a little
makes you think, challenges the class
Butterfield really enjoys his subject, sometimes he gets too excited and talks the whole time, but the discussions are really interesting. Just one 5-question quiz per class, one 1-page paper every other class and one big paper. Easy if you do the reading
He gets really into the topics and is very interesting and philosophical. Made me want to participate and voice my opinions or thoughts. Would definitely take again.
His class is pointless. The books are fairly decent, but I felt like I didn't learn anything at all. Also the deadlines to read the material is way to short. You have to put in a lot more time outside of class compared to other ENG 200 classes.
One of the best professors I've had in college. He really gets you interested and excited about the subject matter. He's also really funny and helpful.
i personally hate english and reading assigned books. but he actually made it interesting and bearable. the discussions i found in the beginning of the year for the first three books was really interesting but slowly the discussions became a little boring and less interactive. good teacher for english i just dont really like literature
I am not big into reading but I found most of the books and lectures really interesting. He also isnt a really hard grader. I would recommend taking him!!!
Dr. Butterfield's a really cool guy. He'll throw out a lot of controversial views, but hey, we're in college now. We should be prepared to defend our thoughts if we truly disagree, and he allows encourages plenty of discussion for just that. The workload is insanely heavy, but an A is very attainable if you do it. Def take him if you can handle it!
He was a great professor. He makes you think and is very intuitive. His lectures are very well thought out and the discussions really get your mind going. The papers we had to do for the class were simple, yet constructive.
Butterfield is an excellent prof. He knows his stuff, and his great at explaining difficult passages. Reading is a must, but it really isn't bad. Writing assignments are also a breeze. Come to class and speak your opinion and you will be fine.
Butterfield is a great professor. You read 5 dystopian novels throughout the semester, so it is a lot of reading. The classes have a discussion every day and he makes it extremely interesting. He tells you exactly what to do for assignments and is willing to help. He's hilarious too, and does a lot of impressions and acting in class.
This professor is awesome. He is extremely specific with instructions and repeats often of what is expected. He is entertaining. The best part about his class is he lets you re-do your papers for a better grade. He is strict on grading, but with 3-5 drafts for each paper with corrections, its easy to succeed if you put in the effort! I got an A.
Professor Butterfield gets the most out of his students. He asks questions that may be awkward to answer, but definitely engage the class. Differed entirely with him on most of his views, but thought he was one of the best professors I had. You also get to negotiate your grade with him at the end of the semester.
If you're lucky enough to get the opportunity, take Professor B! All expectations are clear, the material is engaging, and he is entertaining. He also really gets you thinking about subjects like PHL & POL. An A is attainable as long as you're willing to put in the work. He really teaches you how to perfect your writing?a valuable skill.
He is honestly one of the best professors I've had. His expectations are high, but we're in college so they should be. There is a lot of reading and quizzes every day but I liked that because it was easy points if you read the material. You learn about so many different viewpoints and it's just an overall interesting class and he makes it fun.
One of those teachers you either understand or you don't. Doesn't ever have a set plan. Good guy, not so great of a teacher.
This was a very demanding, but worthy class. Your skills and thoughts are pushed, and Butterfield brings up very provoking topics. Not a hard class to do well in, and you come out with a lot more than just writing skills.
Passionate, energetic professor. The material is excellent, but a LOT of reading. A downside was it seemed we were never talking about the important aspects of readings. He's not very good at hearing what you're saying; he's too busy getting what he's going to say next ready in his mind. A very fair grader and not a hard class to pass.
He's 1 of those people who youll be wanting to impress but have no idea why. He has a powerful presence and can make you think about things. Every class you move your desks in to a circle and have discussion. Theres a short reading daily and around 3 longer papers. Participation is key so if you have a good group of kids that's what makes the class
Butterfield is a great guy, every time I left his class I felt that I'd learned something which was awesome. I had a 3 hour night class and sometimes it would drag on due to the time, but he always did his best to make it interesting and tell good stories or keep us interested. Not an overwhelming amount of work either, I'd definitely recommend him
SOOOO much reading. Lots of journal writing, as you are suppose to answer questions in the journal both before and after you do the readings. You have to show up to class everyday, as you give yourself a grade on the reading you did. Lectures are long and boring, but its an easy A.
He's the exemplar of a pretentious English teacher. if your favorite phrase is "Idk check the syllabus" you'll love Bradley. As far as the class goes, crazy amount of reading. you self grade yourself on whether you read or not, but he then gets skeptical of people giving themselves A's, so he started giving pop quizzes half way thru the semester
Butterfield is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. You will learn nothing in his college writing class.
Butterfield is one of my favorite professors I have had at UW-L. He is a professor that is not afraid to express his own opinion which I personally enjoyed. Discussions and lectures were very encouraging. You feel like you learned something important everytime you leave his class. Definitely would recommend to anyone that wants to gain knowledge.
Very outspoken with his own personal opinions and beliefs, which unfortunately can discourage you to express yours. Eight textbooks are required to buy for this class and the reading schedule is pretty intense. Was supposed to be self grading based on how you felt you read but instead started giving very specific pop quizzes the last weeks of class
Readings are mandatory. Journaling is expected for all readings. Class starts slow until you have 4 papers due in the span of 3 weeks. Gives you the entire class period to work on papers and sometimes cancels class to give you time. However, he doesn't give feedback on papers so you write all 4 not knowing if you should be changing anything.
I absolutely love Butterfield. Yes, you have to buy several books for his class, and there is a large amount of reading due for each class, but it is doable. You self grade yourself a lot, which is nice as long as you're honest. He is a very intelligent and hilarious man who really wants you to just learn and understand his concepts. TAKE HIM
Readings were short and easy and I'm a slow reader. 60-100 pages between Tu-Thur. Not hard to read a little each day. Had 5 exams but only one was graded. Had discussion question sheets to fill out. Do them in detail to get an A. 10 page paper, creative writing using the authors and characters from books. Great class. He's also a pushover.
Best Gen Ed I've ever taken. A lot of work? Absolutely. Worth it? Absolutely. If you're looking for an easy class look elsewhere but if you're willing to take the time, this class can change how you think about not only reading but the world around you. My interest going in was minimal but with Butterfield I got something much better than expected.
Prof. Butterfield is one of those that brings unmatched humor and enthusiasm to each class. There are many times I find myself cracking up and he always finds a way to pull me into the discussion and his stories. He doesn't just lecture, he encourages group participation. He is an excellent professor. His classes can change how you you think.
Butterfield is a highly intelligent professor. He knows his politics and will use it in class. If you consider yourself a Republican, be prepared to be challenged on your thoughts. But if you're willing to see his viewpoints, he makes a wonderful professor. Have an open mind and do the work and you will pass with flying colors.
Butterfield is a very interesting and intelligent professor. However, his class is basically just him rambling for an hour and a half. Sometimes, his lectures are captivating and fun, especially if he puts a personal anecdote or two in there, but often they are just retreads of the same question or concept for the entirety of the class period.
Probably the most interesting professor I've ever had. I love his lectures and enjoy coming to class.
Quite possibly the best professor in the business. I've not only learned more from this odd fellow than seven of his peers welded together at the helmet, but he made me laugh so hard I grew an extra nipple.
Dr. Butterfield loves to lecture. Some of his lectures are hard to follow, but the lectures are not needed to do well in the class. He is very good at motivating his students to write. He is a pretty easy grader and there in 4-5 writing assignments the whole semester with a few pop quizzes. As a person, he an interesting guy and genuinely nice.
I liked the guy at first, but after a couple weeks, the class just turned in to Butterfield rambling on to us for an hour and a half about things going on in the media and his political views. Almost everything is self graded except one super easy two page paper!
You have about 4 exams each one is 10 concept words and you only count the final grade for one. One paper, very easy only about 500 words. The final exam is the same format as the others. He gives you flashcards on Quizlet and gradually adds throughout the semester. You end with about 73 you have to know. Be prepared for some weird lectures though.
Amazing professor. Incredibly inspirational in his ability to inspire change of perspective in students. Increased my ability to look at the world in the light of many different philosophers.
Honestly my favorite professor so far. Made class interesting, funny, relatable and made you think. Helps give you a different perspective on life and ways to live. I looked forward to going to his class every day. Self graded readings and exams. He just wants you to read the content and if you keep up on that you will be fine.
The class is pretty easy. He assigns reading and discussion questions to answer before class, and then during class he goes over the questions and promotes discussion. There are four concept card quizzes that involve memorizing 73 concepts, but aren't super challenging and are self-graded. Overall, class discussions get really interesting.
SUPER funny and engaging. He made critical theory so interesting and funny. Would recommend 100%. Tons of time needed for reading and understanding the material, and the exams were memorizing concepts, but it wasn't too bad. I often disagreed with the content, but he loved to have people argue with him. I'll be trying to take his other classes.
I have no idea how I got an A, but I'm not complaining. Pros: Funny, captivating speaker. Extremely understanding and empathetic person. Kind of weird, but in a good way. There isn't a terrible amount of work. Cons: Lots of dense reading, and graded by very few things. Expectations for grading were slightly confusing.
Bradley should be considered a treasure at UWL. This man cares more about your understanding of the concepts than grades. Half of the time he lets you grade your own quizzes! However, get ready to memorize easy terms, "read", and have somewhat engaging discussions. Beware-- This man loves to talk politics. Overall, Highly Recommend.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He encourages you to think and participate, doesn't care too much about grades, and even lets you self grade. You should take this course if you care to learn about continental philosophy and politics and don't mind listening to lecture. You'll also read some great books!
The course is very easy up until the last week! The final paper exam hit you at the same time and are not on par with the workload the rest of the semester. Other than that Dr. Butterfield is a good guy who cares more about what you learn than the grade you get, he lets you grade most things for yourself. Some books are BAD but some are great.
If you have the chance to take Dr. Butterfield do it! I never thought it would be possible for a class in college to make me grow as a person, but this class did it. The books we read were interesting and relevant and Dr. Butterfield had such interesting and intelligent perspectives.
We read 4 books throughout the semester and a couple additional readings/articles. He would occasionally have pop quizzes but they weren't a big deal if you kept up with the reading. There is a midterm and a final on vocab terms but quizlet was an easy way to study and get an A. It was a very political class so be ready to contribute to discussions
Very few pop quizzes on the reading, but make sure you do them. Reading summaries online wont help you most of the time. Great professor! Make class everyday interesting and tied some philosophy in there as well. Self grade yourself everyday on if you did your homework. 2 exams on concept cards which is not hard if you study. Would recommend.
Of course I have the luck to be in his Guinea Pig class for his concept journals. Basically there are 45 concept terms, and he expects you to write a PARAGRAPH of reflection for each one. A waste of time and is honestly busy-work. After a while you will find yourself writing the same thing over and over, making it up as you go. Not recommended.
Butterfield is so hilarious, but you have to have the right sense of humor for him. I loved his ENG 200 (Trouble in Utopia) course. It was extremely interesting and he made sure to explain the books. We read 4 (real) books, no textbook. Every week be prepared to talk about the discussion questions your group was assigned. Would take him again.
Best professor I've ever had. Truly makes you think. I've never been more excited to read and learn in my life. You will be a changed person after this class. He changes the way you see the world and think.
He really cares about his students success. For Utopia we read 4 books that were actually interesting. You have discussion questions that are an easy A if you put any effort into them and his 2 tests are based on vocab he provides in a quizlet. Short quizzes each week on the readings but are easy if you read. Highly recommend!
He is very intelligent and makes you think, but for a gen ed, I think the expectations are too high. The concepts he teaches are extremely advanced and it's a pretty fast paced course (about 125 pages a week). Discussions were interesting but lots of complex questions you had to answer for homework. If you are a C/BC student, this may be too hard.
His classes are very political, but he actually cares about your success as a student. He wants you to learn things and gives great feedback. I would really recommend him! There also is not a super high amount of work, it is mainly discussion based.
Highly recommend the course literature and humanities. You learn a lot about society and yourself. Literally changed my view on a multitude of different topics
The pandemic Imagination, interesting topic, and list of readings. The exams were on his concept cards. You may think "hey, he wouldnt include this concept card," He will. Readings were like 80ish pages which was fine for some books, but some of the philosopher sections were repetitive and tedious. Class is spent in student-led discussion.
Basically a Poli Sci class. Lectures for 20 min then you talk about current events for 60 in a circle. You need to be familiar with current events in an Eng class? You write 4 papers pretty much back to back. However, you learn nothing about writing from lectures. He does give good feedback, a chance to redo papers, and makes it easy to get an A.
The class is discussion-based and interesting, but almost never truly about the actual book. He has good stories and relates the discussions to his own life, but it doesn't feel like and English class, and not in a good way. He's very disorganized on Canvas and sends tons of emails about random things. Very hard to know what's due and how to do it.
Dr. Butterfield is easily the best professor I have had. He always has hilarious stories, insightful discussions in class, and cares about his students deeply. This class was more of a philosophy class than it was an English class, but I still vastly enjoyed the class. This class has changed the way I think about myself and the world around me.
At first Dr. Butterfield my seem intimidating because of the amount of reading assigned in his classes. After about a week though, you find that most of the things you are reading are actually really interesting and the discussions on the readings in class were always a blast.
Insanely boring lectures and most of the time have nothing to do with the readings. He loves his little Martians that he always brings up for the most random hypothetical situation and you spend the entire class debating this hypothetical.
There was a lot of reading in this class, which can be expected in an English class, but the class discussions were more like lectures. He told a lot of stories that weren't always super relevant and when the class did get involved it was usually hashing out pointless minute details or everyone agreeing with each other...both a waste of time.
Literally one of my favorite professors, never before have I enjoyed going to a class so much. The content is always relevant and profound; you can tell he is trying to make students think about important questions. 10/10 would take it again.
You need to purchase texts for a Gen Ed, boring readings about philosophy, VERY liberal prof (he states this on Day 1), confusing grading system, boring lectures, expects 6+ hours a week to get an A.
Unconventional professor. Expects lots of reading (but you can usually get by without doing it all). Does "grade contracts" so you can give yourself a grade at the beginning and do the work necessary to earn it at the end of the semester. Long lectures but usually entertaining as he's a good storyteller. Attendance matters. Would take again.
Butterfield acts like he expects perfection out of students but isn't a tough grader at all (the lowest grade in my class was an 88). The readings are VERY dense and seems more like a philosophy class than an English class. Classes are discussions of the readings assigned, a new one for each class. Two exams and a final paper.
Professor Butterfield is a great professor. He is very wise and teaches you a lot from the class, even though it is a gen ed. He lets you grade yourself, but you have to prove you put in the work to earn that grade. Lots of reading (it is a reading class) and then classes are discussion time. I recommend him as a professor.
For me personally I looked forward to this class because Butterfield is insanely energetic and fun to listen to. He has numerous stories and knows how to get the class engaged and thinking in class. Apart from his political projection onto students his class is electric and fun to be a part of and the assignments on the readings are fairly easy.
Almost all of his lectures were regarding politics and his own political views. He preaches on how he would never judge students on their political views but then continues to make an utter fool out of anyone who has opposing opinions to his own by asking questions most students don't know the answer to.
Some students complain about how lecturey classes are. I do agree he can ramble, but he is very entertaining and a funny dude. Quizzes are pretty medium. Quirky for sure but he's my favorite professor I've had in college. If people complain about him, it's probably because they are lame individuals tbh.
Best professor at UWL. Readings are manageable, and the quizzes are easy if you actually show up and do the reading. Discussion Tuesdays were the highlight of my week. If you hate having your views challenged, this class might make you squirm. But if you're open to learning and thinking critically, you'll love it. Take this class. Seriously.
The class was manageable and he graded fairly, but the lack of clear direction and organization was frustrating. Lectures often went off-topic, and instructions were very unclear. He struggled with technology, leading to frequent issues. Also, be prepared to discuss political views openly—this course isn't ideal if that makes you uncomfortable.
We had lots of time to work, great feedback and he encouraged everyone to speak their minds. Open, mature discussion about divisive topics is an important communication and writing skill for anyone to have. He's clearly passionate about what he teaches, and that energy really pulls you into the lectures. Good sense of humor as well.
This class was so easy. Compared to my other friends ENG110, they did not get work time in class for essays, that is all we did during class, most of the time. You will not struggle if you use time wisely. Some discussions were weird, but you get used to them and don't have to pay attention. There is 2 exams on Vocab "terms," not just "words."
Lot's of in class work time, a very manageable class if you attend and participate. Gives good feedback in a timely manner!
Dr. Butterfield is a really nice guy and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students' success. He gives opportunities to edit your essays and gives you really good feedback, along with a lot of class time to work. My only complaint is the midterm and the final- it's just a lot of memorization on top of the workload of other classes.
This professor made class enjoyable to attend. I always found myself actively listening to him, especially compared to my other classes. The reading assignments were always doable, and class lectures were always intriguing.
Loved this class. Never before have I really thought about and applied so much knowledge from a class outside of it from a day-to-day basis. Once you join Butterfields gym he's going to make sure you get a good workout in. Overall, Butterfield is a very inquisitive professor that will make you think but he won't be shy to sprinkle in some humor.
Dr. Butterfield taught an enjoyable class that I never dreaded. We had plenty of time to work in class, so I never felt overwhelmed, and I gained a lot from his lectures and teachings besides the writing work. He is a kind guy who cares about his students. I would definitely recommend him for English 110.
Dr. Butterfield was an excellent 110 professor, and I would recommend him to anyone needing to take the class. We always had in-class work time, so I never felt overwhelmed or dreaded the course. I gained many helpful tools and knowledge from his lectures, and it is evident that he cares about his students and their learning.
Dude is a dawg! one of my favorite teachers ive had. lots of time on papers and gives good feedback. If you even half butt it you end up with an A. Take him!
Dr. Butterfield deliberately changed the trajectory of my mindset. The way he structures the class is helpful and motivating to finish the class with discipline, despite the self-grading system. His past experiences and lessons truthfully opened my mind to new perspectives I never would've considered in the past. Take his class!
You pretty much get to grade yourself so I can't complain too much. The thing I didn't like were his lectures. He often got off topic from what we were suppose to be talking about and it would end in him being rude and almost yelling at us about random things.
Get to grade your own work so as long as you put in enough effort to get an A, then give yourself an A. Most days were work days but sometimes lectures got off topic and kind of lost. Overall learned a lot.
Overall, Butterfield was a good professor. We got to self-grade as long as we put the work in and that was nice. He does have a concept card exam that felt pretty unnecessary, but all things considered if you put in the work, you will be able to get an A.
Only a few actual lectures, but they were often filled with personal relations to the topic or other short, interesting stories to help get the point across. Lots of work time in class for essays, and the self-grading was nice; you get the grade you work for. Highly recommend this class.
