while an excellent prof, quite monotone in lecture..has some interesting stories in archeaology
No Comments
i never skipped classes til i took this one. boring lectures and he has no desire to keep anyone interested. exams are still pretty easy..just show up the class before for a review sheet.
BOOOOOOOORING, it's amazing that i didn't drop dead while he droned on with his awful voice. don't even bother coming to class because it's not worth it. i was incredibly interested in anthropology until this guy showed up on the scene.
His class was challenging, he didn't always keep my interest, but his lectures are very informative and organized. The tests aren't too difficult as long as you study the material thoroughly. I didn't use the book at all.
the material was incredibly interesting, and the papers were pretty easy. the lectures however, are relatively boring. make sure you show up at least once a week or so to keep on top of due dates. almost all of the material is lecture based. go to the SI sessions! easy extra credit.
awesome, loved the class
Awesome teacher. I loved the way he organized his class and he really enjoys his work. I recommend taking him for any anthropology class. He's terrific.
Slightly monotone, but if you're interested in the class he's very knowledgeable and has a lot to offer.
material was interesting and the tests and papers were easy. he has a monatone voice though and lectures can get boring. i recommend it anyway.
Prof. Ensor is extremely easy, but beware...he's extremely boring too
BORING!!!!!!!!! His voice is very dull and drags on. he stands in one place the whole time. I took notes on my computer just so I could play games while he rambled on and on! Content is interesting if you can get past his voice and actually listen to waht he was saying. Often lets class out early though which is a good thing trust me!
Dr. Ensor is very helpful but very demanding. His lectures can sometimes be dry, but they are always interesting. Highly recommended teacher.
He's very friendly and the lecture powerpoints were very helpful. Unfortunately his lectures were very boring, I always bring some other homework to do when he starts to drag on.
dr ensor's powerpoints presented material very clear and he really knows the material. but his dull voice could make even the most interesting topics painful!
Lot of notes daily this was a hard class as far as tests lots of info to cover. May of changed teaching technique this was his first semester at EMU when I had him in 2003. Required a few short summary papers on chapters from the book.

Very boring class. Need to take notes everyday. All done by powerpoint. Gives some extra-credit. Tests can be challenging. Need to study alot for the test.
Extremely beneficial to attend every class, tests mostly from lecture. Provides ample opportunity for success and one-on-one advising. Tests were not tricky and contained exactly what was on the study guide. Pay attention to what seems like random info, probably will show up as extra credit on the exam.
I really enjoyed this class. Attending class and taking notes is very helpful for the tests. The study guides he gives for the tests is exactly whats on them. He is always prompt at writing people back and very flexible if you can not make it to class. I would recommend this class to anyone. It is actually interesting.
Good professor that certainly knows his material. You do need to go to class and take good notes every day from powerpoint, which can get a bit tedious. He'll answer your questions to the best of his ability. Tests and quizzes aren't too bad, but you will have to study for them. He does put a guide on E-Reserves, which helps a lot.
he's okay, barely went to class. the tests are a little tricky, just read the book and/or borrow notes when you don't show up to class. do the assignment-which were easy and you'll be fine.
Most boring class I have ever taken. His lectures are all on powerpoint and he has a very monotone voice. Tests area joke, and he doesn't always grade fairly or answer your questions. He is never clear on what he expects and his "study guides" just list everything he ever said in lectures. Made a subject I enjoy incredibly boring.
Very boring teacher, He has four writing assignments that he grades hard and treats them like a english teacher. Test are easy if you do the study guides. He will not go out of the way to help students
Professor is incredibly dry an monotone. He is disconnected from any sort of modern culture and somehow always seems to throw in little comments that bash US society and culture in comparison to other more ancient cultures. Tests are easy, homework is graded like a 300/400 level course. go to class and get notes. both ANTH 135/150 were the same way
Had him for several classes. Always professional and prepared. True, he has a monotone voice, I don't think very many people know he is literally tone deaf - least of my worries. Is most attentive to those who are most attentive in class.
I cannot say enough good stuff about him! He was very clear, very friendly. Some teachers don't seem to want to be there, but he did. He was enthusiastic, funny, and easy to understand. Tests are based on lectures (which are very clear) and are pretty straightforward. You have no excuse to fail this class. TAKE HIM!!
Archaeological Fieldwork - Dr. Ensor knows this subject well. This was an extremely informative, fun and hard working class. I loved the hand-on experience and I got a good work out doing all that digging. Although I didn't have a strong interest in the subject beforehand, I left with a hunger for more. Very highly recommended professor and course!
One of the worst professors ive ever had. He is SO boring and monotone; staying awake in his class is an impossibility. I do NOT recommend this professor in the slightest.
The guy is arrogant, and enjoys laughing at the students when he presents something new that no one in the class has heard of - guess it makes him feel smart like he might have actually earned the PhD. Take notes, skim chapters, for tests use his review sheet = A. Follow directions exactly on his writing assignments.
Nice Guy, he's very pleasant & extremely accommodating. I took his class up in Traverse city, & it was great he did keep us for most of the time, but he made the lecture interesting and was helpful & wanted us to do well...just take good notes...if you do the work & reading its an easy A
have to attend every class unless u have friends that will take notes! um you don't have to do the readings at all, you could study the night before and get an A on his exams. very easy. everything on the study guide is exactly what will be on the test! he even gives all the essay questions that will be on the test!
Great Professor! makes the class easy and interesting. Show up and take notes, you will get an A.
I've taken Dr Ensor for several courses in favor of other profs. I think that right there shows his quality as a professional and as a scientist.
Professor Ensor is a very good instructor. Show up, take notes, get an A. If you study what's on his exam reviews you'll do OK. I recommend visiting him during office hours, he absolutely comes to life! Great class, great instructor (and I'm an accounting major).
I LOVED Mr. Ensor. He is SO passionate and his excitement about what he teaches is contagious. Really interesting lectures, though he has a tendency to move fast and there are lots of notes. You learn a lot though. I recommend him totally.
He loves what he's teaching which is a big plus! But is kind of monotone/boring still. If you go to class and take notes you'll do just fine. He does have some really interesting things to say.
Probably one of the most involved 100 level courses I've taken at EMU but I loved it. You really need to take notes and study but it?s well worth your time. (Hint: on the first quiz, don't take pictures. Just memorize the traits.) Dr. Ensor is extremely accomplished and good looking to boot. If you like to learn and corny jokes, he's your man.
Great Prof., easy class--test based on powerpoint slides. gives out extra credit, test are open book, open notes. dont need the book in my opinion.hes hot! he wears all black, hes excited about the subject matter. going to class is imperative to your success. i took him over the summer, 4day course i got nearly 100% & im a C average student.TAKEHIM
I have mixed feelings about Dr. Ensor. I've had him for several classes. One thing I love about him is that he is incredibly passionate about anthropology! The only downfall is that he can be very dry and it can make you feel a little inferior or uncomfortable. Overall he is a very good professor who cares a great deal about education.
Great professor! I learned a lot from him, very helpful after class, and before. His dry humor was funny, since he thought he was hilarious. If I was still an anthro major, I would want him as my prof for all the classes!
He's pretty dry, likes discipline, loves anthropology. Attendance is not a mandatory but third of the exam is based exclusively on lectures so don't skip. He's a big fan of certain ideology and tries to represent everything from this particular perspective. Made me mad at first, but I did whatever he requested anyway. He gives enough e.credits.
He is a fantastic teacher, really easy to understand so you know what to study. His is clean cut with his expectations of the students. If you do the study guide, and attend his lecture, you will ace the tests.
Seemed a little boring in the beginning. More interesting as the class progressed. He brought in guests that specialize in areas he is not a familiar with, which was great! All information on tests are in the study guide, use it!!
I just really didn't like having him as a teacher. I had had an issue with one of my exams and he was very rude about it. I will never take a class taught by him again
Took intro to archaeology with him before & it was beyond boring. This class was so much better. He's a great professor and I learned a lot. He really knows his stuff and does a lot better in smaller classes.
Ensor is a good professor, he explains things clearly. He does tilt things into his field of interest in archaeology, and he speaks a lot about his current projects. The class is good for those with a major or minor in anthropology as well as those just looking for Gen Ed credits.
just don't be a bum and you'll be fine. real archaeology isn't like indiana jones so if you thats your idea you're going to be disappointed.
best class ever.
I took his one week Intro to Anth course in Traverse City. Best decision ever. I tried taking this class twice on campus over fifteen weeks and withdrew from both classes. Dr. Ensor made the material very easy and interesting to understand. I would recommend him to anyone!!
Took Advanced Archaeological Fieldwork over the summer. Incredible class, minimal papers, lots of fun being outside digging and getting the van stuck in ditches. I've taken 15 credits with Ensor and this was my favorite class of his by far. He is personable and geekily enthusiastic the whole time. If you are an anth major, take this class.
ANTH 437 is a writing-intensive class on kinship, and Ensor is really into the topic. Be warned- you will write 3-5 pages a week and read 40-50. He runs it like a graduate level seminar, you are expected to have something to say every class period. A challenging class, but I have used the information I learned far more than any other class.
Attendance is not mandatory, however everything on the exams pretty much comes from the power points, and he doesn't make them available after class, so take notes. If you do this, it is an easy A.
I took this class up in Shanty Creek and it was a great class. The tests are right off of the power points and he let us use our notes. I would highly recommend him as a teacher.
Prof Ensor is EXTAORDINARILY long winded and rambling. He does mean well and he's willing to give help when you approach him, but he's very socially awkward which makes it difficult to approach him. The class is fairly easy, though, and if you do the readings and pay attention you'll do just fine.
I've never struggled so hard for a C in my entire life. The reading is frequent (50 or soweek) and for each article you need a 1p assignment so the writing adds up. Probably the most valuable class I've taken next to 210 and the final re-inspired me into the major. He's the biggest stickler for process I've ever seen though, so keep that in mind.
Okay, first let me just say that I had to withdrawal from this class with fear of it messing up my GPA. I took this class on campus at EMU and I WON'T recommend taking this class with him. It's a 100 level class and he treated as a 300 level class. Not to mention the fact that this was nothing but a Gen Ed for me. Just avoid him if you can.
Hes a good professor. Just is so easy to become bored listening to him. He knows his stuff, and loves it! attendance doesnt matter, but his powerpoints are on the test and he doesnt post them online. No notes allowed on tests.. total grade is off of three tests. READ THE ARTICLESSSS! i barely opened the book.
Ensor was probably the worst professor I've had at EMU so far. He lectures all hour, every hour, sometimes even lecturing for several minutes after class ends. And he's DRY. The things he says about Archaeology might make sense to an Archaeologist but not his students. His classes have no homework, and grading is solely from tough exams.
your grade is based on the average of 3 exams. There are no other assignments or extra credit opportunities. However study guides are provided online weeks before the exam. This is a lecture based class and you must take awesome notes because he will not provide the PowerPoints (not that they're helpful anyway)
Awesome teacher
I took Anthropology with him at Shanty Creek for the spring break trip. He knew his stuff, but his lectures were outrageously long. He always went until the last minute, even when he said we'd be out early. Our whole grade was based on 3 exams, but we were able to use our notes luckily. He really didn't like having to answer any questions.
I took this class an a gen ed and while his lectured did tend to be long he really tried to give you all the information you needed. He would post study guides online which basically covered every question on the exam, he'd even provide you with the essay question. If you use the study guide, it's pretty hard to fail. Take really good notes.
Ensor always went 5 minutes over class was suppose to get over. One day class should have been cancelled, we sat for 45 minutes doing nothing while he never got the screen to work. If you ask him questions he says "yup" and will move on to the next question. He never once took attendance and didn't care to know his students.
He covers A LOT of information during class. Be ready to take notes! Grade average of 3 tests. He offers very little extra credit and doesn't really answer any questions. If he covered it in class, you should know it or ask a classmate before you ask him to repeat anything. DO THE STUDY GUIDES. I got a 98% on the last test w/o attending class.
he knows his stuff, but he is not a good teacher. If you ask questions your response will be "it is in the book or notes" and if you tell him you looked there he'll just argue with you. For a gen ed class he treats it like a 400 course. If you do ask questions he tends to insult you or be little you. He's jokes aren't that bad, my dad tells worse.
Arrogant, robotic grader--even after giving ones best effort. Empirical regardless of his subjectivity, slinky because he can't hold eye contact with you, robotic because everything he does is a predetermined formula set up for himself, and Vacant because there is nothing more behind his eyes than the rhetoric he recites and claims to understand
I've taken both ANTH 150 and the advanced archeological field school course w/ Dr. Ensor, and he's tough, but fair. He's gonna be hard on you so you don't screw up, and he's definitely better outside of the classroom, but a great teacher either way. He expects you to do the best everyday, not slack off. If you're an Anth major take his class.
Not the best professor at all. His lectures are extremely long and boring. I found myself falling asleep a few times. He grades the essay questions of the tests really hard for specific points. When you ask for help on the study he tells we talked about it in the lecture or its in the book Not very helpful.
Ensor was probably one of my favorite professors this semester, even if his lectures were a little dry. His class is based on three tests which are extremely easy if you actually do the study guide and pay attention. I visited him often in his office hours and he always helped me with any questions I had. He finds everything funny for some reason.
I did like this professor other than the fact that he didn't treat this as an intro course. He treated as if all the students in the class already had prior knowledge of anthropology. The class is a pretty straight forward lecture course. Show up. Take notes. Study notes. Do well on exam. Definitely be at class though.
His class is based strictly off of three test grades. attendance is not mandatory but you need to attend his lectures if you want to do well on the tests. he is kind of boring but he knows his stuff and your tests are actually on the things he lectures about. Overall he's a good professor but most definitely tough.
Grades are based on 3 exams, exams are heavy on textbook and lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, but you will not pass if you do not go. I took me until the second exam to realize how much material from the textbook is on the exams, try not to make the same mistake!
Did not enjoy the class as much as I hoped.
Prof. Ensor was a pretty average teacher. Lots of lectures, and he knows his stuff. There are three tests that make up your grade. If you study, take notes, and read the chapters, you should do well. The lectures are pretty interesting, he does a good job making connections to the real world.
Super chill
Dr. Ensor really knows his stuff, and he is solid. One little annoying thing he does is say "okay?" after every point he makes, and if you listen for it, it gets really bothersome. But that has nothing to do with his teaching efficiency, just a little quirk he has.
The only grades for the entire class are three exams, so if you dont do good on them you wont get a good grade. That being said hes a really fair grader and if you go to class and complete the study guides youll do good on the exams. The exams are super straightforward and consist mostly of multiple choice questions.
He is very lecture heavy and if you miss even one day of lecture, be prepared to play catch up for a while! Only grades are 3 tests in the class and he doesn't give out the lecture powerpoints. He is very approachable if you go to his office hours in going over exams for improvement, not many professors do that. Be prepared to work for an A!
Professor Ensor wasn't a bad teacher. If you don't go to class, you won't pass. He only grades the exams. Read the articles assigned, you will have to write about them on exam but it is easy since he gives you the questions on study guides. He was an odd teacher. Write down what he says in lectures even when its not on the board.
This class can be boring, but take his field school in the summer and youll fall in love with archaeology.
Ensor is very dry during his lectures. Entire grade is based on three exams, but if you want anthropology to be fun this is not the professor for you. He does not require you to read the book but get it anyway because it will help you understand the notes. He also does not answer questions outside of class so do not bother with asking.
Not a fan of Professor Ensor. NO PHONES!!! You get called out until you put it away- even if he hears it ring he will make a remark like "That's embarrassing." and stop the lecture until it stops. He doesn't put anything on canvas. His study guides aren't well put together. There is NO homework and only three exams all worth one hundred points.
Honestly the class isnt too difficult if you follow along, the main issue is the attitude given. Questions arent answered but instead are given somewhat condescending replies with a follow up by asking the question back. The lectures can also get quite dull as Ive seen up to three people fall asleep. Over all the prof makes the class unbearable.
Professor Ensor knows his stuff, but is extremely dull. His lectures are way too long and he often goes over the class time period. If you ask simple questions, he will not give an answer back and acts like you should already know it. For being a 100 level class, he teaches it like a 300 level class. I dont recommend him
He lectures heavy and has a strict rule about no electronics. If your phone rings or make any noise, hell say thats embarrassing. He doesnt offer homework or extra credit. He seems like a cool guy but he just makes the class drag on and goes over his time teaching.
Bradley wasn't that bad of a teacher, the classes were just really boring. You are only graded on the 3 tests you take but you always get a study guide for it. Read the book and articles.
His lectures can be boring at times, but he makes study guides for the exams that help a lot. Go to class and take notes and you will be fine
Professor Ensor from a distance appears to be a bit full of himself. He calls people out for talking and using cell phones which can be quite annoying when he stops the lecture to reprimand someone. He frequently goes a few minutes past the end of class, and doesn't answer questions clearly. His tests aren't hard, but boy his lectures can drag on.
Took this class online due to covid. He assigns weekly quizzes and heavy lectures that helps prepare you for the quiz. Also, he has weekly zooms but they are non-mandatory... they are extra credit! They also help you prepare for the quizzes before you take them. The quizzes arent extremely hard but you will need to have notes ready. Dont use book
He gave us typed out lectures that ranged from 7-10 pages a week. Along with that had to read 40+ pages from the textbook. There was also a quiz at the end of every week. But you have FOUR DAYS to do all of that along with all your other classwork.
Get a typed-out lecture each week that ranges between 7-11 pages single-spaced. Quiz at the end of each week. If you answer exercise questions in the lectures you will ace the quizzes (almost word or word from lectures). Zoom is optional, extra credit. If you like independent work, this is the professor for you.
Bradley is just... fine. He seems to expect too much of his students, as if we are all anthropologists like him despite this being a gen ed, but appreciates when we do well. It took him an entire semester to pronounce my name correctly, despite me correcting him multiple times, and I wasn't the only one. It seemed very disrespectful to me.
I took his ANTH 237 class and it was very cool! He is a very caring professor and states his assignment very clearly. His class is a bit lecture-heavy and has quizzes each week on the lecture. Overall his class is really interesting and I would defiantly recommend it to others.
His class is really easy as long as you do your work.
gave you a study guide with each week's lecture that matched up to that week's quiz. As long as you read the lectures and do the study guides you'll get a good grade
I liked Prof Ensor purely because he is SO passionate about archaeology and I loved hearing him talk about it. Other than that I did think most of the lectures were really long and dry to read and I had trouble getting through them. However, the weekly quiz questions matched up exactly with the lecture material so they weren't bad at all.
Quizzes every week but pretty easy, they match up with the readings. Lectures and readings are very dry and boring, hard to get through. Does go over review questions in class that will help you on the quizzes. Makes breakout rooms almost every meeting for group discussion about the review questions.
Dr. Ensor was pretty good, although my class was hybrid so I saw him maybe once all semester. One test per week based on his online lectures (not well organized) and they're super easy. Overall a very average but decent professor.
Self learning, attendance isnt mandatory but go to class if you want to know if your answers are actually right before the weekly quiz. When you attend the class he calls on people to share the answers but doesnt always confirm if its right and its usually on the quiz.Almost always questions on the quiz that was not talked about or in the lecture.
Of all my classes, his was the most straightforward. Do this, pass. Don't do this, good luck. All you have to do is spend 1 hour reading the lecture and then fill out the questions for that week to use on the quiz. This should take you around two hours to do each week, and then it's smooth sailing from there. Use the quizes for the mid terms.
Professor Ensor's class is pretty straightforward - just read the lectures, do the weekly quizzes, and you'll be good to go. The lectures can be dry, but using resources like ChatGPT and unstuck study helped me stay engaged and prep for the quizzes.
