Happy Friday to everyone and welcome to this review of MCB150! Having gone on to more advanced MCB classes, I cannot say how useful it was to have gained such a strong base in this class. Mehrtens is a pro at teaching. Sure the class may be hard, but if you are willing to put in the effort, I guarantee it will pay off.
AMAZING! He is definately one of my favorite lecturers ever. True he can seem like a bit of a jerk sometimes but that is only cuz he wants you to think about the material. And if you think about it for a second you realized he really did give you the right answer...just not always directly. I definately recomend him 100%. Also dont skip lectur
AMAZING TEACHER! He's very clear and you know EXACTLY what he expects you to know on the exams. Although he does not curve, his grading scale is ridiculously generous where a B is an A. You MUST go to lectures though; if you miss a lecture make sure you get the notes from someone - a lot of material is covered in class.
He is a very knowledgeable person, and a great public speaker. However, his questions are rarely clear. Also, he expects you to know something just because "it was mentioned in class".
He was great. The class isn't easy, but he knows what he's talking about and speaks very well. He talks fast, though, so be prepared to write frantically. In my opinion, lectures are essential as anything he says in class (a lot of which is not written on the powerpoints) could be on the tests.
Very good teacher, one of the best lecturers I've ever had and a great resource to students that need help or just want to talk.
He is AMAZING! One of the best lecturers I've ever met. Clearly knows what he's talking about. It's not a very easy class, but you really get to learn stuff after the lecture. He does talk fast, I recommend you to buy one of those voice recorders, they are really handy to get you through this class. AWESOME CLASS.
Very animated and enthusiastic. If someone knows about the subject, its him. However, sometime a little scary to approach, but very willing to help most of the time. DEFINATLY go to his office hours and get to know him!
The class IS difficult, but if you put in the word and actually learn the material it's not terrible. He is a great lecturer! You have to record the lectures or find a recording to catch everything. Re-listen to the lectures for the tests.
A great professor. His class is difficult, but he explains concepts really well and makes himself very available for students. He really knows his stuff. His exams are pretty hard because they really test your understanding. You CAN'T cram for his exams. Memorization will not work
This was a difficult, challenging class. Mehrtens, however, is a great professor. He has sort of a celebrity air about him; I felt that I was being taught by a consummate expert. His vocal inflections convey enthusiasm and remind me of Wayne Newton. Exams are quite hard because you must do more than memorize content--you must APPLY that knowledge.
Maybe because he is NOT a PhD, there is still unease about his teaching despite him being at the helm for 7 years. All semester long, a course coordinator & a dept. head sat in front, watching his every moove. Bradley was nervous around them and avoided the side where they sat.. Overall, not the best teacher out there. Not even close.
Mehrtens comes off as cocky sometimes, but he knows his stuff. His class is difficult. I would recommend coming to every lecture and possibly purchasing a recorder because he talks so fast. His tests are tricky and difficult. This is a class you will find yourself dedicating most of your time to, so some advice- don't take it if you don't need it.
The concensus amongst my group of friends was that his class is really bad and not just because he makes papers that are so hard. Early on he said' this is not a class in which you will be molly cuddled' and he took it to the extreme. He is difficult to deal with and the most high headed/rude teacher I have come so far. What a waste of time.
"Happy Monday Everyone!" Bradley G Mehrtens is my favorite professor. The class is challenging but just like any other MCB class, if you put forth the time and effort it is relatively painless. He is very animated and keeps class interesting. This is probably the only class that I can honestly say I consistently attended all semester.
Mehrtens is really a jerk. He makes the class a thousand times harder than it needs to be; test questions are worded badly and he asks about very minute details. He is very arrogant (yes, he knows his material well, but he will always make sure you know about how intelligent he is...) Overall, I guess this class can be summed up as a premed weedout
One of my favorite lecturers during college. (Besides Physics 101) Definitely a high-quality professor. Knows his stuff. Organized and easy to follow. A voice recorder is a must for many different classes, so I would just get 1 right away. Definitely a great intro class to the MCB major!
He's a very good lecturer and gets his points across. (He does have a theatre background.) He clearly loves what he does. He does write tricky exams, however. I found attendance to be necessary, since a lot of things on the test are words that come out of his mouth, and not written on the slides.
Professor Mehrtens expects a lot out of his students, and his tough exams definitely reflect that. Many of the questions are vague, and some are intentionally misleading. I found lectures to be monotonous, with lots of material packed into the full 50 minutes. Overall though, you'll get out what you put into the class. As are definitely attainable.
Make sure to attend office hours if you are unclear about something, its extremely helpful and he will answer any questions. Also make sure to do the textbook readings.
He is an excellent lecturer. He has to cover all of the material so he obviously moves at a very quick pace. If you want to get an A in his class this is what you do. 1. Record all of the lectures. Go over these lectures the week before the exam so its fresh in your mind. 2. Go to OH the week before exams. 3. Skim over all of the special feature se
I like Prof Mehrtens, but he talks very fast, and expects you to know more than what the average person actually does. If you are really smart/really like biology, you'll do okay, but if you aren't a biology whiz or haven't had biology in awhile, the course is very difficult, I hated it, I dropped it after I got F's on the first two tests...oops
Absolutely wonderful professor. He knows what he is talking about and he LOVES it as well, which makes lectures that much more interesting. I honestly have never had a professor that I have learned more from and respected as much as I do Brad Mehrtens.
A terrible class through and through. One of those unfortunate professors who love listening to their voice, he lectures without caring much to make any sense. I know it is a large class and the university is going through tough times, but I do wish we had an alternative to him for MCB 150. That would perhaps compel him to get his act together.
Mehrtens is an amazing professor. I had covered everything in my biology classes in high school so it was really a review for me. He did such a good job explaining everything, and was very clear about what he expected out of students. Go to class and study your notes. There is no reason to do poorly in this class.
Brad Mehrtens is a pompous professor that enjoys hearing his own voice. He talks quickly and packs a lot of information into 50 minutes. He expects his students to almost read his mind to do well. His exams are only designed to be deliberately misleading and unnecessarily difficult. Exams are not representative of knowledge gained in lecture.
Fun, enthusiastic about teaching and very live. He does talk extremely fast so its always a good thing to bring your recorder to class. Overall the best professor I've ever had.
Please disregard all negative opinions of this professor. HE IS AMAZING. I enjoyed going to class each and everyday. He made learning Biology that much more fun, and was very engaged in and out of class. Make sure to go to OH's from the very beginning of the semester, you want this man to know you personally. Hard exams,so study 2 WEEKS ahead.
He is a good teacher and very organized, too. You have to study the material regularly; if you study last minute before a test, you will fail. At times he rushes to get the material in, but that's cause there's so much info. packed into 50 minutes. Only take this class if you're willing to pay attention and actually study.
He was a great professor. He was helpful and communicated all of his ideas really well. However, his tests were really hard so be prepared to study a lot. I would recommend studying as you learn the material. If you go to lectures, ask for help, and study hard, you will do well in the class.
You will be doing homework every single day, and it is almost always extremely difficult to find/figure the answer. His exams are the most difficult of any course I have ever taken at the university level, with each question and answer being overly verbose and over-complicated. He is very knowledgeable but that doesn't help you as a student.
Best biology teacher ever. Crystal clear lectures and challenging materials. This is UIUC, and you're taking a general biology course that is more advanced than those offered by most other schools out there.
He is a great professor! This is UIUC so the material is hard. His tests are hard and very specific, but he warns you of that way ahead of time. Be prepared to study, and go to OH's all the time. He is super helpful and can explain in more detail there. He loves his job and that comes through in his teaching. Overall a GREAT teacher!
One of the best teachers I had in college. More helpful and clear by far than any I've seen. He really loves teaching, and you can tell. Ask him anything, don't be shy, but always follow his rules!
He is very clear in explaining things. Having an AP Bio background immensely helps but even if you didn't take a good bio class in high school, you will do fine if you go to all of the lectures and pay attention.
Merhtens is an extremely interesting guy and he makes the class fun. If you pay attention and study hard you can get an A in his class.
what can i say...he deserves a nobel prize for excellent teaching...thought this doesn't mean his class is easy
He is a great teacher and is definitely knowledgeable in the topic. His tests go into very great detail but it motivates you to study and attend the lectures. Overall, I learned a lot in this class. The class is curved so even though it takes a lot of work it's not too hard to receive a reasonable grade.
Class was difficult as hell, but Prof Mehrtens is one hell of a great teacher. I did terrible on my first test, then boosted up and aced the final 3 (inc the final). As a bio major, he is one of my fav teachers and I still keep in contact with him
quality of teaching: 10/10. personality: 10/10. amount of pure eye-blinding awesomeness: 10/10. Seriously, why is he so awesome?
good afternoon to you all. welcome to mcb150.
He is a great teacher and extremely helpful. Very challenging tests. The grade you get depends on the amount of work you put into it. But go to lecture and always review them!
Prof Mehrtens is a great teacher. Very approachable and willing to help. Tests are challenging and your grade depends on how much work you put into it. The class is very interesting and I def learned a lot.
Brad was a great professor. You can tell he really cares about his students and would help each and every one of them if he had the time. His exams and homework problems can be a little wordy so look out. He is very clear during lecture and I really enjoyed the class.
Talks faster than I though imaginable and when asked what is important in the class he claimed "Anything that comes out of my mouth" It is impossible to keep up with him. His tests are not on the same level as his lectures or the reading material. The discussion section is useless, completely unrelated to anything you learn in lecture.
MCB with Mehrtens its not easy. The exams are pretty much what he says and what he says does not pop up on exams. Reading the book will help you understand things more but dont expect to find any questions related to the book on exams. He is a good professor though but having to teach a class of like 600 students its not gonna work out very well.
Here's what to do to get an A: record lectures and just pay attention on the professor during lecture, take notes a day or two after the lecture listening to the recording, and start memorising the notes about 10 days in advance of the tests. Skim the book readings the week before and of the test. Exams aren't that bad if you study enough.
He is a great lecturer, but you better know how to pay attention because he talks fast. 50 minutes will fly if you can follow (or will drag if you can't). The book is helpful if you didn't understand something in lecture, but the lectures are really where you do most of the learning especially for exams. I would take a class with him again any day.
Great Professor. Just be prepared to put in the work, and you'll do fine. Make sure you attend lectures and don't miss an online quiz!
The BEST professor I ever had. He's a really good lecturer, maybe is because he's also a theater actor. He's helpful and clear. Don't miss any lecture, because he says important stuff that are not on the notes but will be on the exam.
AWESOME!
Great lecturer. Be prepared to put in the work, and you'll get a decent grade. Make sure you attend lectures and try your best on the online quizzes!
Great professor and lecturer. I absolutely hated biology prior to this class, and after, I almost reconsidered becoming a MCB major. He is very helpful during his office hours, and enjoys and takes interest in helping students that come asking questions.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Loves to joke around and is EXTREMELY clear and helpful. His exams are DETAILED but FAIR. He loves biology and is very interested in making sure all his students do well. He will answer every question in detail but in a way that you'll understand it. The class is a lot of work but you'll learn a lot.
I hated this guy. I went to office hours confused and he told me to go borrow the lecture recordings from someone. He refused to explain what I didn't understand, and instead blamed me for not understanding it in the first place. The book helps with pre-lecture questions online, but most of the exam material is from lectures. Class is crazy hard.
Hardest class, hardest professor, worst semester of your life. Seriously, just say no.
It amazes me how much material he can fit in the course of a lecture. There's SO MUCH TO KNOW. Everything is fair game on exams (even the seemingly most unimportant concept). He is very clear though in his teaching and what he expects from you. Overall, he is an excellent teacher charged with delivering an overwhelming amount of material in no time
Really tough class, but AWESOME professor. He expects a lot out of you, but you'll learn way more. Yeah, his tests are pretty hard, but if you just read, go to lecture, do your quizzes, go to discussion, etc, you can still pull an A or B. U of I couldn't have picked a better professor to teach the class, though.
Incredibly passionate, funny, and interesting. Has very high expectations but you'll learn more in his class than in any other intro Bio class you can take.
I LOVE BRAD! He is very enthusiastic and is always willing to help. He's the best. The class is very hard but it is so interesting and my favorite class. I wish this class wasn't insanely hard because Brad is just such a great guy. Go to office hours!
Brad is by far my favorite prof ever. He loves teaching and is ALWAYS ready to help students. He's very clear on what he expects, but exams are a little tough so be prepared. Discussion sections are pointless to the class, but go or else you'll lose a decent number of points. If you pay attention in lecture and go to OHs you'll do just fine.
Extremely gifted instructor. Brad is very animated, engaging and articulate, presenting difficult material in a clear and coherent manner. This class is particularly challenging for freshmen, but upperclassmen who have taken hard classes will find that it compares favorably to many upper-level courses.
Brad has been my favorite professor so far at UIUC. His lectures are very engaging and he keeps the material fresh and interesting. Advice...RECORD the lectures and listen to them, exams are very hard and require acute attention to detail. Go to office hours and read the important sections of the book. He is the bomb!!
UUGHHHH!!! This is one hell of a difficult class.. I bought the voice recorder, attend all lectures, I read and go to all of the discussions and still do poorly on exams.. Need a miracle for a C
Brad is very enthusiastic about teaching. Tests are really difficult but if you go to lecture and pay attention a B is not that hard to get
Brad is a fantastic teacher. He makes complicated material easy to understand and is clearly very interested in what he's teaching. It's a hard class, but Brad is aware of this and prepares students well for the exams. Even though the exams are hard, there really aren't any surprises as long as you record the lectures and read the textbook.
Best prof ever!!!!!! He makes bio so interesting to me! He well organizes all the course material and makes hard stuff really easy. I strongly suggest everyone should try to go to his lecture sometimes. It is such an enjoyment. After taking his MCB 150, I set my mind to switch my major to biochemistry from chemistry.
SOme people say hes the best professor at uofi I personally think he is extremely fake, and wrongfully theatrical which detracts from the learning. The tests are 90%lecture (as you are paying to be taught, not so you can teach yourself through reading)which can be a problem for those that skip, PARTY HARD but PUT IN EFFORT for school DON'T SCREW UP
Awesome professor. Convinced me to become a bology major. Lovin' life (no pun intended)
the class is tough because the exams are hard, but overall I didnt think it was bad especially because an 88% is an A.
For the purposes of MCB 150 Mehrtens is not a bad professor, but if you have to take any MCB above 150 I recommend you pass on him if possible. Test are from lecture and contradictory to the book, where the homework is from. My TA was great, probably why I got a C. There was even one time when my TA said he told us Mehrtens gave us incorrect info
Great teacher. Lion Kinged his baby in Follenger. Love.
This class takes a lot of work and studying. Its very difficult, but definitely doable. Brad makes lectures interesting kind of a theater guy. Bring a recorder to lectures and study the power points.
I really enjoyed this class. It's amazing how much you learn (if you are putting in the effort). Brad is great at giving lectures, but in office hours he is very condescending.
Brad is the best teacher i have ever had! He makes biology interesting to learn and he is a very smart man. If anyone thinks this class is hard it is because they are not trying hard enough. if you study and go to class, you can get a B or higher easily.
Brad is a great professor! His tests are difficult though. Sometimes, I feel that your exam grade really depends on luck (ex. do you remember that small indiscreet comment he made that one time that this q is referring to...?) The way to study for this class is to listen to lectures over and over again. If you're lucky, you'll get an A.
Brad is a great professor. He explains everything perfectly exactly as he wants to. You can succeed in class by going to lecture, but PAY ATTENTION. Exams aren't bad if you relisten to lectures. Time consuming but if you do it, it's pretty easy to get the grade you want. It's a very good class and you will learn a lot.
This course has made me and countless others decide that we do not want to pursure the MCB major. Brad speaks too quickly and expects too much out of a 100 level class. I hate this class and going to lecture is almost a chore now. If you don't have to take it, don't.
Brad's an alright professor, although I think his theatricalness can sometimes be a little distracting. If you want to get an A in this class you need to put in the work (going to class, re-listening to lectures). Grading scale is lenient but no curve.
He's a great lecturer, but in office hours he's not very... human. Doesn't turn down the "I'm a proffessor and therefore superior" -vibe at all, which is weird. I would have really enjoyed his class more if his office hours were more personal and less business because he seems like a cool guy. Class is hard, not impossible: it teaches you to learn.
Brad is a great professor. His lectures are clear and easy to follow, and he is very friendly as well. MCB 150 is a difficult class, but you can do well if you put enough work into it.
Brad is an AMAZING teacher. He is so helpful, crystal clear when explaining things, and is very enthusiastic. I looked forward to going to class. Remember to record his lectures because he is a fast speaker. Just listen to the lectures a couple weeks before the test-- you're going to have close to all the knowledge you'll need. You'll love him!
He is a great, clear professor. Record and re-listen to the lectures and you'll be well on your way to a great grade.
For the love of all that is holy DON'T MISS LECTURE! His exams are waaaaaay too hard, but the class is understandable in general. Read and re-read the books and listen to the lectures and you should get a decent grade. BTW, the 2nd exam is a nightmare.
He is enthusiastic while lecturing and youll understand everything he says during the lecture. Its necessary you read the book too tho. Some of the test questions are NEAR IMPOSSIBLE. You literally need to know every single detail (that you would normally think is minuscule) about every option on a multiple choice question in order to get it right
Bradley Mehrtens is the man. He legitimately is interested in molecular and cellular biology and he tells the best jokes. If I could grow up to be one person it would be Brad.
Brad Mehrtens is a great professor, don't get me wrong, but his lectures are VERY ANNOYING. His voice can be very condescending when he means to be thorough, like he's speaking to fifth graders. He also seems extremely rehearsed, partly since he's taught the course for about 20 semesters.... Other than that, his content is all clear and concise.
Class is tough, but if you go to class and RECORD lectures you should do fine. Its pretty easy to get an A- (you can get 70% on exams and get 100% on hw and you will get the A-), to get an A (you can get 80% on exams and get 100% on hw). Overall he is my best professor freshman year.
One of the hardest classes I've taken in two years here - the amount of content you go through is ridiculous for a semester long course. That said, Brad is very good at explaining concepts and helping you out if you need it, but can seem condescending at times during lecture. Take the exams very seriously from the start and you'll be fine
I don't know what people are saying about lectures they are useless he just says the same damn thing four times with no detail what so ever. Then the test are about minute details he said you don't have to know or are on the next subject in class. oh and the book ins't detailed either.
I HATED this class and this professor. His lectures were awful and he only emphasized the unimportant material on the test. He is also very condescending to students when they approach him to ask questions. If it can be avoided, do not take this class.
The class is though because there is so much detail but Brad makes sure you have the necessary materials to do well in this class. You learn so much from this class, its by far my favorite class at UIUC so far. If you put time into it, you can definitely get an A. Brad is great at explaining things and he wants everyone to do well in his class.
Amazing teacher. knows how to explain concepts well. exams are 99% lecture, 1% txtbk. for exams: recrd lectrs, study slides, watch screencasts, skim txtbk. got As on exams. funny, makes class interesting. never even tempted to fall asleep in class. hahah see what he does if your phone goes off. but seriously best teacher yet. an A is def possible
I Love this guys teaching! BEST TEACHER YET! You really have to understand concepts and biological methods for exams but he really prepares you for them. Relisten to lectures (recordings) and screencasts. Ive never had such a good professor. He reexplains concepts in different aspects and repeats them several times. really prepares you for mcb 250
I took Online over summer failed (SUPER HARD). Then in the fall in class got a B+. HAVE TO attend lecture to pass exams. About 2 questions per exam come from the book. Most questions are what he SAYS in lecture. You have to work for this grade. Studying the night before WILL NOT WORK. Only take if it is a requirement to graduate.
Brad is the bomb. You do have to work hard in this class to get the grade you want, but Brad helps your every step of the way. He provides you with all of the materials you need and is very clear about the content. I learned an incredible amount of material and feel very prepared for any other MCB class I have to take in the future.
Mehrtens explains everything very well and can help with any questions but he makes the exams ridiculously difficult. I wouldn't take the class if you don't have to but if you're really passionate about the subject then it might be worth it. The system for class participation really sucks. Logging in before class starts can sometimes be a challenge
The BEST teacher ever had. Took a bio course a year ago and HATED it. Everything was like a confusing web of terms and I hated it all. at first I dreaded taking mcb 150. 2 weeks later, I loved bio, loved going to class. Brad made everything make so much sense. He provided us with all info needed for exams. no joke here, got 100 on the third exam
Brad is a truly exceptional professor. I can't imagine having a better experience in MCB 150. Brad truly cares about his students and makes himself available regularly for the student's convenience. It isn't hard to tell that Brad has a knack for teaching. He makes what seems like an impossible course enjoyable. Would definitely recommend his class
Brad is a great professor who really cares about students. There is a LOT of content that is covered in this course. If you want to do well, you MUST show up to lecture and do the assigned readings. Brad presents information in a very clear manner during his lectures and he is always available to help. That being said, this class is not an easy A.
Majoring in IB so not all that interested, but Brad made the class a lot of fun. Brutal tests, but great grading scale! Didn't love the material but Brad made it the best it could possibly be.
Mehrtens made "the study of life" very lively with his natural zeal for teaching. He will make you work for it, but it is totally worth it if you wish to go down the pre-med track. Office Hours is where you can really get to know the material from Mehrtens himself! Bottom line, he will really teach you biology like no other professor. 3 Thumbs Up!
Brad is a great lecturer who explains the material well. Must show up to lectures or you will be lost. Don't focus on the textbook. record the lectures and listen to the lectures again before the exam and you should be okay.
Great lecturer, extremely difficult exams. Be sure to utilize office hours on a weekly or at least bi-weekly basis if you want an A. Ask questions as often as possible.
Mehrtens is a hall-of-fame lecturer. He never says "um" or "like." Everything is clear and deliberate, like he has his lectures memorized in his head. That being said, the class was not easy for me, and I highly suggest not skipping. Tests are difficult, even if you study diligently, but his grading scale gives you a legit chance to do well.
Brad is a popular professor, despite teaching one of the toughest classes the freshmen take. He is a fantastic lecturer, always prepared and as clear as can be. He is pretty funny, but his exams are nothing to laugh at. Don't skimp when prepping in his class.
Brad is an amazing lecturer, and very helpful with office hours. Make sure you go to class and don't fall behind. The class is definitely difficult, and you'll have to work your butt off even for a B. Study a lot for the tests.
Great class
Great class, great teacher
He may claim he doesn't try to trick you on tests but he often uses rather confusing wording or complicated question styles. The material is not very difficult but there can be a lot at times. Many questions are repeated off of old exams. His lectures sound overly scripted but they aren't too boring. I heard his office hours are rather helpful.
Mehrten's class was very interesting, although it seemed like he made his tests way harder than it needed to be for a 100 level class. Tests are very, very hard to get an A on, and this class will consume a lot of your study time.
Class is hard. Definitely record lectures and don't cram. Study a little bit every day, and I don't mean doing just the daily mastering biology. Office hours is helpful when you have questions, try to go whenever possible. But when you have a question and are confused and ask him about it, he is sure to explain it clearly to you.
Prof Mehrtens is a godsend. No way I could of gotten through this course with a lesser teacher. His jokes are super lame, but he genuinely cares about his students doing well, and is BEYOND patient when helping students struggling to understand the material. I wish he taught more courses!!
This guy literally has the entire textbook memorized word for word! The lectures are extremely well structured and he breaks down difficult concepts. His exams are ridiculously hard for a 100 level class! Do NOT underestimate the difficulty of this course! Great professor, very approachable, but this class requires time.
However, all of the homework and lecture participation points really help you bounce back from the terrible exams, I promise! You will feel like you know nothing and are going to fail, but you will make it. As long as you record & listen to everything Brad says more than once, you will see he tests you word for word on what he has already said.
Brad is an amazing professor and lecturer. He has so much passion for MCB and knows the material inside and out. The only hard thing about this class is that the tests are extremely tough and tricky. If you do not go to lecture or actively listen, you most likely won't get an A. Finishing MCB150 was bittersweet, simply because you're leaving Brad.
Brad made me look forward to lectures. He had tough exams but as long as you studied enough they were manageable. He's a G
Brad is there for his students and really tries to test the concepts and understanding. Definitely is a weed out class for those who don't want to spend the time on Biology.
Listen to lecture recordings, look at homework problems. Tests are difficult, but know the right materials to study off.
Brad is one of the greatest profs I have had. He used to be a theater major which keeps lectures engaging. Record lectures because he tests on some of the details not in the slides. The class is difficult but getting an A is possible. You learn a lot about MCB. He really makes you think. (Side note: go to him for advising to!)
Brad knows what he's talking about. He sounds like an audio textbook during lectures, which make it hard to stay interested. He wants his students succeed, but the exams are ridiculous. The class is curved heavily, but the exams are still unreasonable. Be ready to spend a couple of hours every day reading
Brad definitely know the information. Very approachable guy, he is also an adviser in the biology department as well. Definitely do not forget to do the homework. Oh, and he curves the class A LOT!
He is definitely a great lecturer. Unfortunately, I don't find myself really into biology. It's still interesting to learn and memorize all the stuff tho.
He is a very enthusiastic and thorough professor. It is a tough but doable class, but if you do all the readings and watch all the lecture videos you should do well. The class is graded very fairly. I would take one of his classes again.
Though the class is quite challenging, you know that it extensively prepares the students for the MCAT and the career world after that. Additionally, the class has a balance; it is demanding, but with a solid work ethic and a study schedule, an A is attainable.
Brad's passion for mcb is contagious and he's an amazing lecturer! I would definitely consider this a weed out class (an 84%A-) so take it seriously. Do all the assignments and DO NOT skip lectures, it will pay off in the end. The exam questions are EXTREMELY specific so you must know the info thoroughly to do well. Study hard and you'll do great!
Brad is honestly one of the best professors I've ever had. Yes, MCB 150 is a hard class, and will require a lot of work, but if you study, attend a few office hours, and take discussion seriously, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to get at least a B. I got an A-, but i put in a significant amount of work, but still really enjoyed it.
His tests are the hardest tests you'll ever see (I'm talking 60% averages), but they're doable if you work hard. You have to come to lectures and watch screencasts. However, Brad does answer every questions and gives you a lot of resources. You just have to make sure to really be on your A game for this class.
Brad is a great guy and professor. Great lectures, at least when they're traditional. Make sure you study and don't underestimate the first exam. I tried studying using "concept mapping" or connecting idea that we learned and it worked great! would highly recommend for studying.
Mehrtens does a good job at explaining things, however, he also does a good job at complicating things. He gives very in-depth answers because he wants you to really understand the concepts. Tests are very difficult and tricky. You have to really know your information then be able to apply it in a series of trick questions.
Great teacher; he wants his students to not just memorize the material but actually learn it. Dont underestimate this class or his exams, you need to put in effort for the grade. 1st exam shows what he expects but dont let the score discourage you. Record all lectures, take notes from the textbook and review screencasts. Hard but not impossible.
Great professor that knows how to command the audience (also teaches an theater course). Tests are straight from reading materials and "screencasts." MCB150 was the easiest class I took last semester.
Professor Mehrtens is a great lecturer and an even more interesting guy. You can tell that he knows a lot about the subject, and he cares a lot about biology and how his students perform. That being said, this class is not easy by any means, but it is possible to do well if you try. Voice record the lectures because he speaks fast, and take notes
He is my HEro
Tests are tough and worth most of your grade but it'll teach you how to properly analyze questions before answering.
Brad is the best professor at UIUC. He actually cares about how you, and knows everything about the class that he's teaching. The tests are very hard but if you study a lot they are manageable. Do not skip lecture or else you wont do well
Really tough, but best teacher of all time.
This course was by no means easy you will have to work for you grade. The tests are definitely something to get used to. Lots of applications so make sure you understand the material thoroughly. I highly suggest you attend TA office hours (Shafi is AMAZEBALLS) and Brads office hours.
He is definitely the best mentor I have ever met.
Brad is an amazing professor. The class is difficult but he makes lectures interesting.
Great professor! He holds office hours which is very helpful, if you pay attention in class and attend office hours every other week, you will enjoy this class rather than stressing about it.
Brad is a good professor, but his tests are hard even when youve studied for 12+ hours. I definitely recommend taking all the practice tests you can to get used to the question types. I failed the first two exams and still ended with a B- in the class because he has an adjusted grading scale. Be ready to study!
Professor Mehrtens is one of the best Professors I have ever had. Although I took this course online in the summer, he still made it seem as if we were in class and was very clear in all aspects. I learned SO much from this class. Although it is difficult, he truly makes you think hard on questions and makes you connect topics together.
Brad is one of the best professors I've had at the university! His lectures are very engaging, and he cares deeply about all of his students. Make sure to use all the resources he gives you in order to do well! Textbook reading and practice exams are a must.
The first half of the class I couldn't stand Brad, and then after exam 2, he became my fave professor ever. Hands down one of the most caring professors I've had. This class is HARD but he gives you all the resources you need to succeed, you just have to give yourself enough time to study it. Attend class, record the lectures, & make concept maps!
I thought the lectures were very interesting and that the in class questions were very relevant. The exams were very specific and therefore difficult, but overall if you pay attention in lecture and discussion, it's an easy A with a generous curve of the class.
Great Guy. Definitely go to his office hours
Brad is an excellent professor. He's not only an expert on the material but also knows how to communicate it effectively. He's a very caring guy and will always make time to help people out (even if it's not about biology). Still, MCB 150 is a very difficult class: go to office hours, pay attention, and study every day if you want to do well.
This professor knows what hes talking about. He teaches students in a way that can be understood no matter their biology background. Not only are his lectures easy to follow along with, but also hes available for office hours. My advice is to fit office hours into your schedule weekly. Do NOT be afraid to ask questions.
I love Brad so much. Literally cannot describe it to you. Such a great guy and rewards his students for putting in the effort. Also a Biology advisor so you can get to know his personally should you choose to do so. Has high expectations but the class is structured so well that all of his requirements are absolutely justified.
Definitely one of my favorite professors at UIUC so far. Great guy, explains things clearly and really cares about students learning the material. Exams have some tough questions, but he does that to teach you to think critically rather than just memorize things. Wish he taught more courses here!
Brad is an entertaining lecturer, but his lectures are a direct summary of the textbook without any extra insight. He's totally rehearsed the same lecture "performance" that he's given for the last fifteen years. The guy is fake. In personal interactions with him I realized it was an act and he couldn't care less about me as an individual student
Brad is a true gem. He goes extremely in-depth during his lectures, and make sure we participate with our peers to succeed. Midterms make up 40%, the final makes up 20% (not necessarily a cumulative final), and everything else makes up 40%, so it's easy to get free points. Brad knows MCB is a tough class, and he tries to make it easier for us.
I came into the class as a Senior with a 4.0 GPA and this class was horrible. Despite studying close to 40 hours per exam and going to office hours every week, my test average was about a C+ and I ended with an A- in the course (.3 away from an A). No matter how much you study, if you dont conquer his exam style questions then you wont get an A.
He claims to care about students individually but doesn't. He makes tests more difficult to bring down class average if your class does too well. He is a great lecturer but is very rehearsed. Lectures are clear but very fast paced (he's aware of this). Standard is to record lecture and then take notes outside of class (2-3 hours per lecture).
Tests r 90% on lecture stuff. He's legitimately a talented leader, he understands exactly what he is teaching, and how to convey it to curious ears. His speaking abilities are seriously impressive. He gave a lecture about Progeria, and he cried in front of everyone and shows real passion for the content. He makes students want to learn.
Not am interesting lecturer. I don't understand why they don't have someone more knowledgeable in mcb teaching the introductory class. The days when classes were flipped are unbearable to go to and feel like highschool. The discussion section is especially a waste of time that teaches you nothing new or interesting. Reconsidered my major after this
MCB 150 was the first "weedout" class for premeds here, and the course seemed terrifying on the outside looking in. However, if you go in respecting the class and its difficulty, Brad ensures you will have all the resources you need to succeed and more. His lectures are hilarious, highly informative, and memorable. You will get what you put in.
Prof is extremely fake and lectures are boring. Tests are incredibly difficult. The workload is immense because of the "flipped" class format. As for getting a good grade, your best bet is doing the homework (answers are on quiz let). Good luck.
I think the people that complain about the difficulty of this course simply just didn't put the work in. This isn't some 400-level course in college, and there are really a limited amount of things Brad can test you on. Prepare for those and you will do fine on the test. Don't question the class - question yourself whether if you studied enough.
He doesn't even have a Ph.D. Not sure why the University lets him teach the course. Doesn't really understand the material at deeper level. Knows details but doesn't understand the big picture. Don't trust the positive reviews. Mehrtens writes them himself, and it's obvious because he uses the exactly the same wording to "motivate" the class.
Brad is hardly considered a REAL professor and his knowledge on molecular biology is honestly questionable. It seems as if he is acting in front of an audience. It's like he has his slides and lecture memorized and if you throw him off, he will break.
Brad has canned jokes and lectures, he's like an actor on stage. Seems warm on stage but is uncaring about students in person. Can't give in depth explanations, when interrupted with questions he flubs his lines. Takes pride in how difficult his exams are, uses obscure wording. Definitely more interested in rote memorization than teaching concepts.
People complain about the tests, but they are not difficult if you make sure you really understand the material. He also has a generous grading scale (88% is an A, and you can get full points on homework while only getting 90% of the questions correct).
By far my favorite first college class. Brad is just a super caring guy, both as a professor and an advisor. It's definitely not an easy class, but it's a classic situation of you get out what you put in. The strategies I learned in this class are ones I will use for the rest of my academic career. Loved the class and Brad!!
I LOVE THIS GUY that is all
Brad spends class making jokes and doing things that dont correlate to Quests. Even the TAs are confused on how to explain his teaching. The quests are like exams except you only have 30 minutes. None of the post class or Smart book assignments correlate to quest material. He boasts about the low class average rather than helping students.
The only thing wrong with this class is that there is no lectures whatsoever. Everything you learn in MCB 150 is by reading the textbook. He does answer questions, and when he does, he gives great feedback and helps you out. The quests are hard, but does not correlate to your total grade very much.
This professor did ok with lectures but was incredibly unkind in office hours. Tough grader and loves to use trick questions on exams. He takes great pride in weeding out students instead of making STEM more inclusive.
You have to learn everything through the textbook. The lectures each week are spent doing more application-related concepts. So if you are confused, go to office hours. Otherwise, you have to teach yourself. Going to office hours changed my quest grades from Fs to As by the end of the semester. He also has a good curve.
This class is very dependent on you reading the textbook. The chapters are extremely long, but this is your only way to be prepared for the week. The lectures are more similar to office hours and discussions. It would be a lot better if he went over things entirely and bring back prelectures. The quests are also quite challenging so study a lot!
All the HW adds up to 400 points which is almost half your grade, so do those. The Quests are sort of a joke in the fact that you only have 30 minutes to complete 18 questions that require deep-level thinking. Brad never answers emails, do not even bother trying to get a response from him, you're wasting your time. Ask your TA instead
Lectures were not helpful. Around 10% of lecture content was relevant for exams. The rest of the content was self-taught. The only perk of this class was the lenient grading.
DO THIS TO SUCCEED in MCB150!! Coming from someone who got a 100% on 2 quests and 85+ on all the other ones. (1) Read the textbook thoroughly (2) Dont bother listening during lecture time (3) GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! You will learn everything during office hours (4) DONT JUST LISTEN in office hours! Engage your brain by asking questions. Good luck
Really ridiculously hard tests that have hardly any application in the real world. Lectures were useless and had about 5-10% of material that would actually be used on a test. The course is basically self-taught. The weekly textbook assignments took up so much time and were not helpful in the slightest. I learned more through my TA in my merit.
Find smart people to take the quests with and cross your fingers on the final. All resources provided do not prepare you for any of the assessments, good luck.
It took time to get used to the structure of MCB 150. However, once I adjusted, I really loved it. My biggest recommendations are to read the book (even if it's painful it really helps), participate during the case studies, go to office hours, and do the homework! Brad is awesome and super caring, his passion for biology is contagious.
Quests were hard & very easy to lose pts (conceptual & open note/internet). Most questions didn't allow for partial credit. If you took AP Bio, you're pretty much solid for a good 70-80% of the course. Lectures basically useless (they're recorded). Pay attention to case studies. Grading scale is easy though; 80%ish quest avg & 68% final end w/ A.
This course is honestly not as bad as people make it seem. There are so many drops in the homework, discussion, and quest category. Also, the final is worth a very small percentage of your grade. As long as you take notes on the chapters and lectures, you should be fine.
The course itself is fine but Brad is not a great teacher. His class structure has Q&A, case studies, and some lecture. It relies too much on McGraw Hill and self-reading, his style complements people who are disciplined and have good fundamentals from AP. Students who are weak would find him absolutely useless, TAs would be your best resource.
The class is not curved which is tough when students are consistently averaging below a 70. When students bring up concerns to the instructor, he claims they don't show up to lectures enough. Don't get too discouraged and going to office hours helps, but the quests do not reflect how the class is like actually.
You really have to have great discipline and attend the lectures and really pay attention to everything in the material and resources he posts. He himself is not a bad person or professor and he's a pretty enthusiastic teacher. His lectures are like memorized in his head but they do track off a lot. He hardly answers a students question correctly.
get ready to read because that is the only way you will learn anything. I used to go to the lectures but he would j talk ab case studies and I would get so confused it felt meaningless. many students consistently got Ds on the quests and brad would blame it on not going to lectures. BUT, this class is insanely curved
The class was structured in a way that made you memorize the entire textbook in order to do well on exams. Even if you do study for the exams, the best you can probably get is a high B due to the impossible questions that he designs. Only reason why people succeed in this class is because homework and smartbooks are worth a lot.
He should've been a theatre professor b/c of how big of an ACTOR he is on stage. He doesn't know MCB material he just has it memorized for the stage. Made you feel like an imbecile, and he judged me for asking questions b/c he sucked as a lecturer. His exam questions were of the most insignificant details from the book that was ridiculous.
Brad was a chill guy, but I only ever learned anything during office hours. He blames doing poorly quests on not going to lectures, but that wasn't the case for so many people I knew. Quests are incredibly hard with wording meant to trick you. Overall not the worst I've had, but if not for the grading scale I think more people would be failing.
Brad is a great person, but makes MCB 150 kind of miserable at times. He doesnt really teach so much as he answers singular questions in random order. I feel bad, because hes such a nice guy, but your grade in this class is a direct reflection of how many hours you lock yourself in the library and shove details into your brain (coming from an A+)
If you take this course during the summer, you WILL teach yourself. There are no supplemental resources or lectures available. You do the homework assignments (about 1-2 assignments each day) and read the book which is about 4-5 chapters a week. It seems pretty easy to put together a half-a** lecture explaining atleast the more complicated subjects
DO THE SMARTBOOK READINGS. his lectures aren't the best but his office hours definitely help and if you can't go to them he usually posts his online ones on the canvas page. Quests are difficult but open note and the grading scale is shifted so a 48% and up is passing so don't stress too much. The discussion sections were a waste of time, however.
Go to open office hours, he actually teaches stuff there compared to his lectures. You will mostly be reading on your own.
He has a generous grading system with a large curve, but this class is not fun to take. I have never had a class before that does not have a lecture, only reading the textbook. I do not like his course coordinator, she is not understanding. Personally, I would not take this class unless you have to. I will say though he is passionate about biology.
He doesnt teach so get ready for a lot of self study.
Brad is a nice guy, but his class only works for a few people who have already understood the topics or those who have previously taken a cellular biology class. His teaching style is nonexistent. Even when reading the book and then going to the course, he never actually went over anything we would do on the quests. I learned nothing here.
entire class is based on the textbook, but some lectures can be helpful. discussions are essentially useless. the curve is nice, especially because the biweekly quests are ridiculous. brad's a fun guy, but he's definitely not meant to teach. prepare to read for about 5+ hours a week.
He simply doesn't teach. The entirety of lectures is spent doing practice problems which are graded for accuracy. The tests(Quests) are open book but with a relatively short time to complete so the average is generally around 50%. Make sure to read the textbook thoroughly because that is the only way you will learn the information.
Biweekly quests will be your worst enemy. There are ZERO notes to take during his lectures. Lectures were always weird and just him talking about god knows what. There is no lecture content. Quests were unbelievably difficult but there is a huge curve on the class so dont worry too much. Felt like I retained no knowledge or info.
Brad was a decent teacher, his grading scale and curve were very generous, there are a lot of easy points to get wether that was from in class questions, homework and discussion points. Brad's lectures were not that helpful in learning material but were worth going to. The course has a lot of material to learn and it is very easy to fall behind in.
Took this course last summer, no recorded lectures, and minimal interactions from brad. He spent most of his time justifying why we should be okay with teaching ourselves the material! Gave us weird case studies with no information on how to complete them. Probably the laziest professor ive ever had at UIUC
it's a struggle
spends more time talking about how his "lecture" style is teaching than actually teaching; not hard to get a good grade simply because of curve/lack of points put into quests/final; have to read, does not go over the material at all except for one detail/application in the 5 practice problems or "case study" we do every lecture
shawty doesnt even teach he just talks like hes on broadway
I really like biology, this class makes me hate it. He does not teach relevant information. All we do is "case studies" during lecture that don't help. Quests are nothing like Lecture or homework. Discussions aren't helpful, which is frustrating considering it's the one time that you can ask questions. A word to describe this class: Frustrating.
He is a nice guy, and the grading scale makes the class reasonable, but he is not a great teacher. I cannot say I've learned much from lecture. He tends to ramble and waste time without clearly stating information that is important to know. Self study to do well in this class.
Reread the chapters multiple times. Don't expect for him to do content review during class 80% of the time. Class consists of 6 "quests" and a bunch of (very tedious) homework points so if you don't do the best on the quests but you get all your other points you should be able to get a B+/A-
Brad did not teach the class, you teach yourself and then he asks you questions during lecture. Over 50% of the class will get many questions wrong on the quests and instead of going over why they were wrong in lecture, he whines that the students didn't try hard enough. This is a 100 level clas and it's taught like a 500 level.
I got an A in Brad's class, but I want to warn people about him. Despite his high rating, he does not teach during class and you only learn during office hours. I didn't learn anything in his class even though I got an A. sucks because the class is mandatory for pre-med students. dont expect lecture to help. I only learned how to google efficiently
Bradley Mehrtens does not like to teach us during class and expects us to learn the content all by ourselves. As a freshman, I took it during my first semester here and the learning curve was quite harsh in this class. During the quest, you will always see questions that are unanswerable through Google and the textbook. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
Basically have to teach yourself this class. Don't even bother paying attention in lecture because it doesn't really help for the quest. Brad is too focused on trying to be an actor in lecture instead of teaching the correct way.
Only thing you will learn from Brad's MCB150 is how to google the answers quickly during the quests. You wont learn anything in lecture from those pointless case studies. Brad is an L professor, you only learn in office hours which rarely helps either for the stupid questions on the quest that are every other week smh. would not recommend.
This man (and this class) stressed me out so much. Clearly is a very nice guy (loved the dad jokes) who is well educated but the lectures are so word-heavy/rant-like that it's hard to get anything out of them without already having been a Ph.D. (or if you memorize the textbook). Tests ("quests") are open note but that makes it harder to study.
Really knowledgeable professor who lectures very well. This class is very hard but putting in the work will get you a good grade. While the quests are very hard, you will thank Brad later as you will learn an incredible amount of information in his class.
His class requires a lot of self-teaching, and his lectures seem to just be him going on tangents about niche parts of the material.
Brad's lectures are genuinely useless, quest questions are next to impossible which is why he lets you use the internet which doesn't even really help. I feel as though I have learned nothing in this class. The good thing I can say is that he does give out a lot of free points through smartbook assignments, discussions, and Learning Catylitics.
As someone majoring in MCB out of pure interest in it (not premed), this class made me question my love for biology. I learned nothing bc the quests focus on seemingly insignificant parts of the reading rather than making sure you understand the concepts. He only has high ratings bc of the curve (which wouldnt be needed If he actually taught).
Brad is an amazing guy. He truly loves biology, and he is quite knowledgeable about the concepts. Personally, I'm not too fond of the way the lecture moves. I wish it was a bit more centered on the key concepts that would be addressed on the quests. Brad is wonderful, but this class needs a rework. The concepts need to be reinforced effectively.
Be prepared to have your grade destoryed by the final. Grading scale is generous, but not generous enough. Succeeding on the quests is pure luck. He allows open internet and open notes on the quests and people still fail miserably (ex: class average being 48% for one of the quests). No hope for this class, just pray to the biology gods.
Brad does not teach. Lectures are useless, his "correct answers" and explanations defy what any credible source online says, so you are just guessing what he wants from you. Quests are impossible, reading takes forever, if not for the grade curve, no one would get an A.Our class average was a 48% for an exam and he said we didn't study enough.
I got an A but this class sucked the life out of me. Lectures don't cover the test material and you have to try to learn everything in the textbook on your own. Final exam average was a 54% this year. If you are thinking of taking this class first semester on campus, don't. Nice guy but the worst teacher I have ever had.
The lectures are fine but they do not reflect what is tested on. If you read the text book and can google things then you will do well as the class is curved heavily.
The quests were harder than exams I had that semester even though they were open note. The only thing that got me through this course was my amazing TA. Brad will probably mention something about his rate my professor the first day, and yes the reviews are as bad as they seem.
This class is pretty much self-taught. He seems to expect you to know everything when you come to lecture and uses lectures as time to quiz you on the material instead of teaching you the material. He's a nice guy but just a really awful teacher. If you're taking this for a Gen-Ed, just don't, pick ANYTHING else.
Lectures are mandatory but don't help at all. Questions are impossible to answer. Large amount of coursework. You have to teach yourself, but quests and exams are also impossible to study for. Brad as a person is really nice though.
Brad is awful. He does not teach or post any of his slides. Be ready to learn everything by yourself. Avoid this class if you can. He knows the material but decides to not teach it. His class involved him trying to stump you with questions he believes you should already know.
You'll need to read and teach yourself everything. Quests are TOUGH but doable if you really put your heart into studying. Brad has absolutely no talent as an instructor (some advisors have even elluded to this...). That's really all it is. Based off of his lectures I really have no idea where his test questions come from. Good luck...
Be prepared to teach yourself quite literally all the course material. Brad will never cover what you want in lecture, and what's covered in lecture will not be on the tests. Go to office hours if you care about your grade! It's a near necessity! When the class average for the midterm is below a 50%, you know there is a problem.
You will have to teach yourself all of the material in this class. The lectures only go over a very small portion of the quiz material and the homework is never relevant or helpful for the quizzes. But, you can pretty much fail all or the majority of the quizzes and still pass with a decent grade because his grading scale is significantly altered.
I can tell Brad is a nice person generally but the way MCB150 is taught and structured is not it. Quests are often too hard to prepare for with lectures not really helping at all, pretty much all relying on you to teach yourself at all times. If you do have an AP Bio credit, please use it and if not, just get ready to become your own professor.
Very, very textbook-reading and attendance heavy. Quests (quiz-tests) every 2 weeks that never covered material we read about or were lectured on. Not to mention, lectures were insanely specific and did not help students understand the key concepts. I feel like I didn't learn much in this class and felt disappointed on many occasions.
PROS: Huge curve, easy to get full points in every category except quests and exams, passable class, some assignments were fun. CONS: Unclear lecturer, rare partial credit, Quests are difficult and questions are not appropriate for a 100-level biology course. Professor Mehrtens is a good man but he is very set in his ways. Tests need a rework.
Brad almost never teaches anything during his lectures. They mainly consist of him trying to be an actor. His Quests are virtually impossible to do well on. On top of all that, there is now a midterm for MCB 150 (starting fall of 2023) to tank your grade even more. I would HIGHLY suggest using AP Biology credit to skip this course.
To succeed in the class, learning the content is not enough. You also have to be very careful during quests and know how to answer his questions. There is also little practice for each quest. For the final, I suggest studying the quests and practice quests to practice answering his questions. However, there is a heavy curve, which is very helpful.
Teach yourself, Brad does not really teach well, really just yaps about 90% of concept that doesnt matter that much. My TA helen carried though, hopefully you are that lucky.
He's not a great professor.
I think students should be wary of Brad. Beyond his tough fits the professor is a tough adversary as well. Brad made sure that a young woman trying to progress in the stem world was unable to get a passing grade in his class so she would end up homeless and sad and ugly.
Brad is not a good lecturer, he over complicates simple concepts. Your grade is solely based on exams. Brad seems like a nice guy but not a good prof.
The lectures were relatively arbitrary to the course content, and although I always took notes in addition to the in-class activities, I struggled so much. You are expected to memorize and possess a mastery of every single concept in the textbook. Otherwise, prepare to fail and only pass the 400-level written exams due to the hard curve.
This professor is a really poor lecturer. You have to rely on the textbook for all the information you need for the exams. The class averages on the exams are usually 60% or below. Definitely do not recommend.
tests are atrocious. he doesn't provide good study materials and you're expected to remember every little detail from the textbook and lectures to answer insanely hard test questions. test avg is around 60%. curves save the class. skips important bio topics and does topics in a nonsensical order. don't take this if you've never taken bio before.
Horribly structured class, horrible professor. Doesn't care if you fail or succeed. Take this course at a community college if you can.
literally the worst professor ive had at uiuc. got an actual 18% on the exam. he doesn't care that majority of his students fail and he refuses to change the course structure. lecture is mandatory, but useless and the tests are quite literally impossible. use AP credit for this class if you can.
Brad would be a great 300/400 level professor, but this is an introductory biology course. In my personal opinion, the course is way too detail-oriented for a 100 level class. The exams are nearly impossible, especially if you're busy during his office hours (in which he covers some exam-type questions). Class exam averages never pass 60%.
Brad seems like a nice person but his class sets you up to fail. I got a decent grade because of the generous grading scale, but it was an unnecessarily stressful class. Learning goals are very unclear & I never knew what kinds of questions would be on the exam. Content seems too advanced for a 100 level class, Brad gets bogged down in the details.
tests were wildly hard but intentionally tricky. true/false questions intentionally meticulous and tricky with the insane amount of content jammed into every test. if grad level ta's are struggling to answer your questions brad, then maybe you should reconsider the questions you are giving first year students
Brad not only makes this class not fair for a 100-level freshman class, but he also takes no responsibility as to why the averages on his tests are in the 60s. He claims that he "cares about us" and "wants us to succeed", but when 600 people are barely scraping by with a passing grade in his exams, it is clear he is the problem.
The hardest science course I've ever taken at this school. Pre and Post-lecture assignments, one or the other or both, due every day of the week at 1pm and you have to get them correct to receive full points. Had to read the book and take thorough notes to even understand anything going on and still failed most tests. Take this course at CC if can.
Have never hated a professor more. Brad does not care about students & only wants to perform on stage and brag about his knowledge. Test questions are irrelevant, one-off statements that Brad makes. Tests are so difficult that the averages are never above 70%. Brad is also condescending. The only way to do well is to attend every office hours.
This class is unnecessarily, extremely difficult. Lectures are designed for him to boast knowledge, not teach. It's a 100-level class with 300 level exams. At the beginning of the semester, he'll say, "this class isn't a weed out". Don't listen...it 100% is. Averages are always terrible (60% or below), and discussions are useless and unhelpful.
Cannot teach
Lectures are all over the place and so much reading. Unfortunately you have to know both lecture and textbook content fully. Even then there will be unfair questions and you will lose points. I went to lecture, read, and rewatched his recorded lecs. Get every point possible outside of exams to save your grade. But, 93%(?) is an A+ (diff scale).
He tends to ramble a lot in his lectures. Not clear with the information. He accepts the exam averages as good when they are clearly bad. Tough class.
test material was very reflective of little details Brad mentions in lectures. i would recommend watching lecture recordings as a study source for exams as he goes more in depth regarding topics from the textbook. overall, get all homework and discussion points to boost your grade because exams are hard to do well in
Brad's a nice person and he seems genuinely interested in biology and in his students. Tests are a lot of your grade, and most test questions don't correlate with the readings or the lectures. He was happy with test averages in 60s (have been for at least a decade). He teaches as if we know what he's talking about and not as if its an intro course.
Although I did well in the class, Brad wasn't a great professor. His way of teaching was fine but the tests were filled with trick questions and didn't test anything meaningful. From taking the class, you get the impression that the class isn't geared towards learning but rather doing well within his "system". Not a great thing for intro biology.
While the professor seems knowledgeable, his teaching style and test formats make this class unnecessarily difficult. To do well, focus on engaging with the material through unstuckstudy ai, the textbook, and discussion sections - the exams can be tricky.
terrible professor, avoid if possible
If you can focus during his lectures and keep up with the work, Mehrtens is a great professor. His lectures are INCREDIBLY well made and offer nearly everything you need to succeed on the tests. He also thoughtfully will answer questions when you ask them. There are many haters out there, but I'm a fan of his.
Lectures are well made and the course is organized but the professor overcomplicates every concept possible. Tests will have unfair questions that were never discussed in class or in the book. Professor blames the students' personal lives when the test average for his “easier” test is a 60. Believe the reviews they're not lying.
This class is hard and exams are tough but it's very doable to get an A. If you put in decent effort, rewatch the lectures and do your readings (he includes stuff from it) you will be fine. He says that he doesn't curve at the beginning of the class but the grading scale is already really curved since an 88 is an A and an 84 is an A-.
This course was a pretty difficult, but overall Brad is okay. He explains concepts clearly and is very helpful during office hours. His lectures are also pretty entertaining sometimes. Difficult exams that are very lecture heavy and require a lot of studying. Also records lectures which was nice.
Pretty good, knowledgeable professor. Exams are tricky but rewatching lecture recordings and reading the textbook helps a lot. Brad is accessible outside of class and does want to help. Overall the course was not as bad as I was fearing it'd be.
Gets a lot of hate but he recently changed his grading system. 400/1000 of the points in the class are free (easy quizzes, discussions) and you only need 88% for an A. I thought his lectures were great and explained concepts well. You do have to put in the work and actively work all year though. Good info, easy grading system, and good material.
Content is not hard, but you need to remember every detail on ppt and even every sentence the professor said because the exam is tricky. However, once you prepare well, you will win.
The format of the class changed this semester (for the better). Book is required but all exam content is covered in class. Content from every slide or some brief remark is all fair game on the test, so pay attention. Lectures were engaging and Brad is approachable. The material is hard for a 100 level imo but you have the resources to succeed.
Honestly brad gets a lot of hate but I think he is a great teacher. He really does try to get you engaged in lectures (which he posts online after). The class is also super organized. People mix up MCB 150 and Brad. He is a good guy and decent teacher, and MCB 150 isn't supposed to be easy.
Before taking the class, I was scared because I heard some bad things. However, we started having exams in CBTF and a higher class average this semester. He's good at explaining some hard concepts in his own words. Attend student hours and watch lecture recordings, then an A is totally doable. I'd say I enjoyed learning MCB150 with Brad.
I used to hate Brad b/c the class was really demanding & exams were super tricky. Towards the end, I realized he's actually a good lecturer and seems very passionate about MCB. Good person, but I absolutely HATED the exams. There is a generous curve at the end, but if you haven't taken AP Bio previously, this might be a rough one for you...
Know every detail of every lesson to get good grades on exams
He has good lectures but his tests are very hard, with questions focused on a passing remark during his lectures or details in the textbook. The midterms for him were tough, but make sure to get every point from discussions, learning catalytics, pre and post lectures, and the final exam isn't as bad.
This is a class typically taken by freshmen so the content is new to most people. The problem was that he lectured as if we already had a deep understanding in the course which made it even harder to understand what we were learning.
Lectures were very interesting and you could tell he was really passionate about every topic covered in MCB 150. Midterms and finals are pretty lecture based, make sure you know lecture content well.
Brad's class is very tough, and will be even tougher if you didn't prepare well for the lecture. But if you talk to him and ask him questions, you will realize that he's very passionate and wants his students to succeed. A very nice guy. My advice would be do the reading and take notes from the book if you can. Going over lecture videos also helps.
I thought his class was pretty interesting. Lectures are well taught and not a lot of homework. However the tests are very hard and it took a lot of studying to get good grades on those tests. Definitely not an easy class but if you study beforehand for tests and take good notes during lecture you should be fine.
If you take this class, get ready to understand the importance of rewatching material-dense lectures and finding supplementary videos. Memorization IS KEY. Take this class seriously, get a study group, learn how to study early. Cramming won't work for this class. Use Ninja Nerd's videos for some of the material he covers. Good luck, you can do it!
his lectures are terrible, you just have to teach yourself everything from just reading the textbook
I thought he was great and I honestly do not understand all the hate. People complain about a dense course structure but fail to see that this is a biology course and that feature is pretty much unavoidable. This class requires effort. You put forth the effort you will be fine.
Interesting class. Try to get as high of a score as you can on the first exam as its the easiest and most straight forward one. I never read the textbook, only rewatched his lectures and reviewed notes to study. Form a study group. Anything on the lecture slides or what he says is fair game for the exam. Overall, study early on and you'll do great.
Very unhelpful professor. I got a score above 90% in exam 1, but I would say if I follow him carefully during class like everyone else, I would probably end up with a 70% in the exam. Don't trust him. Learn by yourself. He is incompetent in get the materials understood.
teaches complicated and doesn't prepare us well for the test. I am a straight A student and got a D in his class and that doesn't say things about me but about him as a teacher and his ability to teach.
Brad's biggest weakness is honestly his lectures. He's clearly passionate and the course structure/resources are not bad. He just doesn't make sense. His slides have barely any words and he's convinced he can just supplement for it by verbally explaining a very complex biological process with a laser pointer and picture.
Real funny guy. Maybe he should take the energy he uses to find and then tell dad jokes at the start of class to make his lectures better and easier to follow. Tests questions range from extremely easy that a 7th grader in their first biology class could answer to so niche that someone who read the textbook pages 5 times over couldn't even answer.
MCB 150 is a tough course, but Brad is actually a great professor. If you have questions you can go to him and he will absolutely give you the help you need. The lectures are very heavy, but I don't think that's his fault, the course just covers so much content. His lectures are theatrical. The exams are pretty hard, but if you study u will be fine
If you weren't born a doctor in your previous lifetime all the best
My good grade in this class has absolutely nothing to do with him. He is smart, but smart doesn't correlate to being able to teach. Very hard to follow and fast paced. Would often show a diagram with no words and speak about it like we know what he's saying. If you are good at memorizing random stuff, you will be fine.
Hey guys not too much on Brad... This Professor goes above and beyond for students to do well. He consistently makes himself available after lectures, always answers questions on Canvas, holds regular office hours, and even posts lecture videos. Content can be challenging but it's MCB150, but Brad can only do so much, do your part of the work.
MCB 150 is a tough class but Brad really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He encourages you to ask for help and he's accessible outside of his class.
He is so overhated. People just complain because it's their first time in college and they aren't used to actually having to do work. Yes, the class is hard. But Brad does everything in his power to teach you well. His lectures are actually good and engaging. You just have to do your part of the work.
Good luck on exams. Most of the stuff he teaches in class does not even matter for the exam. He throws in words that have never been mentioned in class. Most of what you learn has to be done by yourself because the exams are nothing like what he taches.
The reason I don't have a 4.0.
He's definitely not the best professor I've ever had, but he's not as terrible as everyone makes him seem. If you do the work, you'll be fine. But if you're not willing to put any effort in, then it will show in your grade. It is a hard class, but it's not impossible. Rewatch the lectures and look at the learning goals for each unit before exams.
He genuinely yaps and talks about the most random stuff during lectures that aren't on the test. His tests are just so random, and it's so hard to study for them. I usually rewatch the lectures and try to dismiss his yapping. I've always wanted to be a bio major, but now I genuinely hate it and want to switch.
His lectures are amazing, unlike a lot of these ratings He posts lecture slides and recordings, and has a forum you can ask for help in But half of the questions on the exams are never mentioned anywhere.
Discussions do not prepare you for the exams and neither do the practice exams. Some questions are about topics on a single slide that we covered for
This class was...something. The exams were probably the worst exams I've ever taken (so far). The questions were poorly worded, and some did not correlate with the readings at all. He will take one little detail from one lecture slide and put that in the exam. I enjoy Biology, but this class made me question some things tbh. Discussions didnt help
You can tell that he is definitely very knowledgable about the course, but he acts like we are as well. He moves so quickly through the slides and there is rarely enough time to type all of the notes before he moves to the next slide. The exams are also quite difficult and will have random questions about topics we have never discussed.
I had to rewatch every lecture and take detailed notes on everything to get a good grade. I did not read the textbook, so I assumed the questions from the exams I didn't recognize from the lectures were from the book. He talks fast and it's so easy to get lost in lectures
The hate is SO UNREASONABLE. Brad is a nice guy, very accessible, and his class is not hard. People complain that the lecture doesn't relate to exams which isn't true. His lectures teach you the stuff and the exams are about applying it. It is not a hard class and if you struggle, please reconsider this major.
By the end of the semester, it was a lot of self-studying. The discussions are not helpful at all, and the lectures are too fast paced. The class is heavily curved, which is helpful but not too much especially if you're other hard classes. The textbook covers nothing on the exams; it's all from lecture.
While the curve is helpful, everything else in this class wasn't. The discussions were not helpful. The textbook was not either. All the exam content came from the lectures which were too fast to grasp anything. The practice exams were nothing like the real ones. Studying for this class was a nightmare, and so time consuming (8+ hours/week).
