Merner knows what he's talking about, he will remind you everyday he is a synthetic organic chemist. His test are very difficult and make you think. If you don't study at least 2 hours everyday for this class you will fail or struggle to get a C. You will work harder than you've ever done for a class and maybe make it out with a B
Great lectures and very helpful if you go to his office. Gives weekly review sessions and really cares about students progress. His tests are tough but not impossible. Will drop lowest grade. If you are willing to work you will learn a lot.
If you are a science major, especially pre-professional, I would definitely recommend Dr. Merner. His lectures can get overwhelming and confusing, and his tests are tough, but he is extremely helpful and approachable during office hours and really cares about his students. You will work incredibly hard, but you will learn.
This class will prepare you for the mcat. Tests are tough but he gives lots of bonus points and review problems. If you email him for help he will reply quickly and gives good feedback.
If you know whats good for you do not take his class. Worst teacher ive ever encountered
This is a tough class but Dr. Merner is a very good teacher. If you keep up with the material and do the review problems he gives, you'll do well. Bombed the first test but started to go to his review sessions and office hours and did well on the next 2.
If you are willing to work harder than you ever have in your life, take him, and it will be worth it. You have to be willing to try, but you will learn so much, and despite his sometimes tough attitude, he really teaches well.
Dr. Merner is the best chemistry professor I've had at Auburn thus far! He is very intelligent and knows his organic chemistry. His lectures can be a bit overwhelming, but it's important to attend and take notes. He is always available if you need help and he gives plenty of practice problems (some for extra credit).
This class was hard but it made me appreciate the value of hard work. I had a weak background in CHEM 1 and 2 and pulled off an A in this class. Dr. Merner is so dedicated to teaching organic chemistry and his style really worked for me. Take him if you want to learn!
As in any organic class, be prepared to work. I definitely had to read the textbook as we went along. We had 3 tests (and you could drop one) and a final. You'll get lost in his lectures if you don't read ahead most of the time. Overall, I thought he was a really good professor for organic.
Goes way too fast during lecture just so he can get through everything. Very overwhelming. Tests are very hard and requires very detailed answers and explanations. Left class each day feeling more hopeless about passing.
This class was awesome! Dr. Merner has a lot of energy and gives a lot of time to students. Lectures were interesting, review sessions helpful and he was very helpful in office hours. I would recommend this class to people who want to learn. I learned a lot!
Dr. Merner was a great professor! I learned so much material in this class. I would definitely recommend him for o-chem over any of the other professors. He can be a little intimidating in class, but is very personal and helpful in his office hours. Go to his weekly review sessions and his reviews before the exams!!
Dr. Merner is a great professor. He doesn't mess around though which can be intimidating for some students. Make sure to do all of the homework and continue to work the practice problems until you can do them without difficulty. Very enjoyable teacher though but you will have to work for it!
In order to pass this class you have to be able to live, breath, eat, and sleep while thinking about O Chem. There is no way to even to begin to understand this class unless you dedicate every second of ever day to it. Strongly suggest getting a tutor.
I learned so much in this class. Dr. Merner is a great professor. His test are tough but if you know how to do the assigned problems and review sheets you will do well.
Keep up with the reading, and you will do well. He's a pretty good lecturer if you're up to date with reading, and he gives a lot of practice problems, which is awesome. Really study the study guide things he gives, and go to any extra lecture sections he does. I cannot emphasize how much reading the book actually helps.
O-Chem is hard, but Merner made it fairly painless. He goes off powerpoints and posts them online. Studied about 3 hours for each test and made of 100% on each. He is also prone to curve tests A TON!!
Merner is bit of an arrogant jerk. He will make fun of you in class and in office hours if you do not understand a concept quickly enough. If you stay on stop of the reading and do all the assigned problems and worksheets, you will get an a or a b on the exams.
Dr. Merner is great. His lectures are entertaining but cover a lot of the notes. The pace can be fast at times but he is very helpful and explains things well. Works through lots of problems in class. Tells you exactly what to expect on tests.
Dr. Merner is a very approachable professor. His lectures can, at times seem a little over your head, but SI/office hours will clear everything up. I also LIVED in study partners this past semester which I encourage anyone taking this course to do. Overall, read your book, and Merner's review sheets will prepare you for each exam.
This class moves quickly but Dr. Merner gives lots of review sessions and very helpful review sheets. Writes everything on the board and never uses power point. I would definitely recommend him for O-chem. He always curved exams.
Dr. Merner is an excellent professor. However if you're taking this class and not going on to pharmacy school, med school, etc, he may be a little too intense for you. His class gave me a solid background in organic. If you put in the effort and go to his reviews you will know what to expect on the test. Definitely wish I could've had him for 2080.
He is a hard teacher and he can be kind of arrogant and very impatient but, he honestly does care about his students . I took him a few years back after failing squillacote. He helped me out alot and even wrote me a recommendation letter.
Brad is a real cool guy. He talks at a super human pace which makes note taking nearly useless, but he gave good reviews and his tests were very fair. He wants you to understand organic chemistry which made this class worth taking.
The best teacher I have ever had and by far the best organic teacher. If you get the chance to take him do. He talks fast in class but does TONS of example problems and then puts the notes up after class. Really nice guy and wants you to succeed. Tests are VERY fair, will not try and trick you but to do well you have to put in effort.
Dr. Merner was a great professor. I never thought I would enjoy organic chemistry as much as I did. His lectures are hard until you get used to the o-chem jargon, but then it's not so bad. He posts notes and excellent test reviews. The tests are challenging but doable. The final is basically your whole grade. He gives some opportunities for bonus!
I should not have gotten an A in this class, but he is very very generous with grading. Though his lectures were kind of hard to follow with all the jargon, his online notes were very organized, and I practically lived off of those. Now that I know how the class works I would take him again, but be ready for a bit of a shock at first.
Be prepared to listen very carefully during lectures and scribble down all jargon he says and writes down. If you are not an auditory learner, be prepared to rely heavily on reading and the notes posted online. I never scored higher than 67 on a test and still got a C, so he gives lots of bonus. Still extremely hard.
He is one of the best professors in Organic Chemistry! He used to have an attitude in the past but know he got better.
CHEM7220: challenging class
It's clear that his students think a lot less of his teaching than he does. His lectures are scattered and he talks way too fast. He has an attitude towards people with questions and is not very accessible outside of class. He is constantly trying to rush through topics right before the tests.
Dr. Merner is a good guy and he definitely knows his stuff when it comes to Organic but he isn't the greatest lecturer. He only wrote on the whiteboard without a lot of explaining. He wasn't very accessible outside of class, but doing the book problems he recommended definitely helped. He was very generous on our final grades which was great.
Merner is a fantastic organic chemistry professor. He holds you to a high level and tends to go fast, so be sure to ask questions. Hes fairly accessible outside of class and is extremely willing to help. A fair warning: his final is 40% and if you dont get a D, you wont pass the class. I learned a LOT in this class, highly recommend.
Dr. Merner was great at first and explained things really clearly, but throughout the semester he would get so wrapped up in his teaching that he didn't notice almost the entire class was struggling to keep up. He goes through very complicated concepts quickly and expects students to thoroughly understand them after seeing them once in class.
Dr. Merner was challenging, but you definitely learn and remember the material. His lectures are great, although he talks fast. Hes pretty cocky, but man he knows his stuff. Really good about giving bonus on the final. Not super helpful at office hours. Youll want to read the book for the test along with lecture notes. Overall, good prof
Prof. Merner really knows his stuff, which can make it sometimes difficult to follow, but his excitement about Organic Chem makes it more exciting. He is really great with partial credit, but his exams are extremely hard. He is willing to meet with you outside of class, but he is also very busy. Overall, difficult class but a great professor.
Three quizzes, three exams, no homework. He scales at the end of the semester. Brad makes himself available for office hours and recitation every week, but you have to come with questions (meaning you need to put time into reading and working problems before getting help). Overall, a very fast pace and time consuming class regardless of the prof.
Dr Merner stepped in to take over class when the original professor couldn't. Thos was the best thing to happen since i arrived on campus 10/10
He should not be teaching an inorganic chemistry class. Nobody knows what is going on and he's going too fast, and the homework on ALEKS has not been lining up with class material. He knows his stuff (and he is cocky), but this is not good news for any first-time chemistry students. The internet or the book will be your teacher in this class.
He has the potential of being an okay teacher... but honestly, he's rude and doesn't care about his students. I get that he is an organic chemistry teacher and that he was just thrown into the position of teaching general chemistry I, but he makes sure to remind us everyday that he's an organic chemist and he teaches way too fast.
Took over my chem class when my teacher got sick and couldn't teach. He is rude and doesn't care about students. Teaches way too fast and won't let you forget that he's and organic chem teacher and this is all below him. Very cocky.
Lectures: fast-paced, go over notes every weekend Available in recitation, but not office hours Cares about your understanding Difficult material, he makes it simple Exams like practice material and class examples, out of 50 pts Very Fair Grading - partial credit Textbook problems - good practice, not on exams
Be aware that when he says he'll post some practice work, he doesn't always follow through on that. It's heavily necessary to get the book and do practice problems, or you won't be able to follow the pace. Also, sometimes he adds new material that you have only just learned to the test, which makes it more difficult.
This was his first time teaching a general chem course and it showed. He worked countless problems incorrectly, never posted our grades, and lied about what was on the syllabus. He is incredibly rude and made this course significantly more difficult than any other gen chem course. Also, he sucks at teaching which made going to lecture pointless.
Unhelpful and confusing during class. Stay on top of the online notes and the textbook all semester. Office hours are ok, but be prepared with specific questions. He hates when you come in there for general help and advice, and usually makes it seem like he has better things to do. Very smart, but should not be teaching.
The class consisted of 3 quizzes and 3 tests, but guess what. If you fail the final, no matter what you had in the class, you fail. That being said, Merner is very smart. He will help you in office hours but only if you have very specific questions. If he feels like you're wasting his time he will let you know. Read the textbook and ask questions.
This class is probably the hardest class I've taken at Auburn so far. Brad is a nice guy but teaches fairly fast and expects you to read before class. Getting an A isn't impossible, but you will have to work really hard for it. Practice problems and reading the textbook are essential. Most tests were curved, and the final had bonus questions.
His syllabus says attendance is mandatory but it isn't. He lectures on new material the day before a test and does no review. He posts review sheets the day before a test but doesn't post the key so you have to send him your answers for him to check it, YET only replies 50% of the time. He belittles students for asking questions. DO NOT TAKE.
This class is a lot of work. READ before class. Go to SIs for the regular class, do ANY problem you can get your hands on. Practice worksheets are just like the test. Gives a lot of extra credit on the final, 87 is an A. If your final exam grade is higher than your grade in the class, the final is your grade. Hes nice but intimidating at first.
He was the worst teacher I've ever had. The only test that correlated truly to homework/study materials was the second test. The other two, everyone completely tanked. The class average at one point was, 40% for a test. Ridiculous. Auburn needs to hire better professors, because the chem department is slacking. Gorden would be a better option.
He cares so much about his students. Even though my grade was low and I struggled through the class, he was always willing to help. Reading the textbook/ochem as a second language is KEY! You will have to work hard, but you will get out of it what you put in. Dont be afraid to ask questions, because all the material is important.
Dr. Merner is a kind professor that really cares and is funny and personable. It is a difficult class, but he is helpful during office hours and provides a scale if the exam average is too low. You need to do a lot of practice and put in a lot of work outside of class in order to succeed. Provides practice exams. He is probably better in person too
Brad is a great professor. He truly cares about every single one of his students. I mean it is Organic Chemistry, it's gonna be hard. However, he is a great professor and tries to explain to the best of his ability. Whole class is 3 exams, 3 quizzes, and a final. Exams are very fair and he does a lot to raise your grade at the end of the semester.
Brad does a good job with a hard class and subject. Challenge him on every exam as frequently you can get up to a letter grade back from him due to errors by the TAs. Overall all a good professor who tries his best and goes out of his way to make sure you have the best grade possible.
He is a great professor and knows exactly what he is talking about. You have to study incredibly hard to get an A but he is always accessible and host many office hours and truly wants his students to understand the material. He will give you points back if you go to his office hours and is a fair grader. Class is really tough.
Online school has sucked but this man revived my semester. He cares so much about his students and genuinely wants you to succeed. He hosts group study sessions before assessments, and his practice tests look almost identical to the exams. The class is hard but Brad provides you with every opportunity to do well.
Dr. Merner is a great professor. He always makes himself available to students and holds review sessions before every exam. The practice problems from the textbook are helpful and practice tests are similar to the actual ones. The class is hard but if you put in the work it is very possible to do well. He genuinely wants his students to do well.
Super difficult class, but he does a ton to help your grade, just be prepared to work hard
Dr. Merner is an amzaing professor. I took him for CHEM2077 though, which was tragic on my part. Even though I withdrew from the class (I'm awful at Chem), he was willing to meet with me on a nearly daily basis to help me as much as he could. The class is really tough, but he's a caring professor (a little arrogant) but I would take him again.
The ONLY grade in his class are his lecture exams sooo mess up on one and you're screwed for the semester. He hates answering questions and makes you feel like you're stupid and prepare for him to compare you to his honor's class.
Dr. Merner is incredible. Chem 2070 is tough. Its a lot & you have to put in the work. Dr. Merner does everything he possibly can to give as much help & credit as possible. Want to learn & actually understand? Take his class!
Dr. Merner truly wants all of his students to be successful. Your grade is only based on tests but he drops your lowest score and will drop a second test if you do better on the final. He will also curve the test when necessary. He is available everyday for office hours and offers up review sheets before each tests that are very helpful.
he is a literal a hole. when asked questions makes you feel so small and stupid.
Ochem is hard, really the hardest thing I have ever done. However, Dr. Merner really really does want to help. He is extremely accessible and provides extra materials to help. Asking questions in class can be helpful, sometimes a little intimidating. He is willing to reevaluate grades and drop scores. Only grades are 3 exams, 3 quizzes, and final
Dr. Merner is intelligent and knows a lot about chemistry, but I did not enjoy having him as a professor. You can tell he is one of those professors who are only at the university because they want to do research, not teach. He was incredibly rude and would sometimes yell. I have heard he is better for O Chem, but I will not take him again.
Dr. Merner is very smart and knowledgable about Ochem, making his lectures very efficient, too efficient to process. Grades are completely dependent on tests and the hardest tests count for the most. He tries to be helpful in class but desperately needs to reassess his grading model. However, you will learn more with him than Curtis. Very difficult
Dr. Merner is a great OCHEM professor, but his class is very fast paced. You absolutely HAVE to stay on top of things or you will be very behind even missing one day. He is so funny and gives you so many chances to make an A. If you put in the hours it is a great class.
Dr. Merner is brilliant. So smart that he doesn't know how to dumb topics down enough so that it is easy to understand. This class takes a LOT of studying. He does a lot to help your grade: gives partial credit, exams can replace quiz scores, and final exam grade can be final class grade if it helps you. But, only 3 quizzes, 3 tests, and a final.
This is a hard class and you will have to work for a good grade. While its difficult to master the material, Dr. Merner is clear about what will be on the tests. Hes very knowledgeable about ochem and it can be hard to follow the lectures sometimes, but he is very accessible and gives lots of opportunity for you to get clarification.
I took O Chem with brad for the summer term and it was the worst decision I ever made.. He is a great professor and very knowledgeable, but he definitely expects you to know and remember everything from chem 1/2. The summer term class was very fast pace as it is only 5 weeks.. you only have exams and quizzes.
I took 2070 in a mini-mester over summer and I am so happy i took this class with Merner! He made taking o-chem in 5 weeks not as horrible as it sounds, he gives lots of extra credit and scales, I did an entire letter grade better with the extra points i got! hes a good lecturer and gives you plenty of study materials, very accessible! BEST prof!!!
Absolute god send of a chem professor. Ochem is terrible in general but he made it so much better. Super good lectures and expectations are actually doable compared to other professors. Took him my second time for OChem 1 in a 5 week summer course and it went 1000x better than expected. He makes sense the first time around instead of struggling.
Dude is too smart to teach. Nice guy, but don't take it unless you like to work.
There are 3 quizzes and 3 exams, and no homework in between. For me, I don't mind this, but for others it might be a deal breaker. I enjoyed Dr. Merner's class. He is straight to the point, and he wants you to do well. He will try to give back points where he can. OCHEM is a hard subject though, with lots of reactions you need to deeply understand.
This class was difficult and requires a lot of studying. Merner also talks very fast in lectures, which can make it a little hard to keep up. However, his tests are very fair and he wants you to make an A. He gives so many opportunities to help your grade and is very accessible outside of class. Gives good reviews before tests also!
Dude was chill af. Too smart to be teaching, but he still does a great job. Very passionate about his subject, so if you show up and care, he will respect you. Making an A is not easy. Make an A on the final, get an A in the class, no questions asked. Very fair guy.
I was nervous for OChem this year and Dr. Merner really helped me understand the subject. He is very clear about his expectations and the reviews he gives before tests are good examples of questions he asks. He responds to emails quickly and holds a review session before each test that was always helpful. He is also a fairly generous grader.
Took his 5-week summer class which is obviously fast paced. He was a nice guy and lectures were alright. Tbh I missed class a lot and was fine with using the textbook to supplement. He wasn't very clear on his grading scale and I thought I was gonna get a C but ended up getting a B lol.
Merner is awesome. He is more than willing to help you outside of class and give points back. This class is tough. If you want to do well you have to put in lots of time outside of class. He gives practice quizzes and tests before the actual ones. He grades very fair, and honestly it is the best situation for o chem.
Dr. Merner is a great professor and guy. He wants you to succeed and is willing to help you as long as you are willing to put in the effort. He is a generous grader and his exams are very fair. Definitely the best option for organic chem.
My main piece of advice is unless your major is in Chemistry and you absolutely love it, DO NOT take this man. There is nothing wrong with his lecture style or tests, but this is the hardest class I've ever taken, and he is merciless. The grading policy is forgiving, but that's because of how hard his class is. TAKE AT OWN RISK.
Recommend it if you are decent at chem not- if not you will struggle. Very hard to reach outside of class as he is busy but he wants you to understand the material and will try to help you. Teaches at a very fast pace. The only grades are 3 quizzes 2 exams and the final. The final will replace your whole grade if it is better than your grade.
There is no homework which seems good in theory but then you have no study material. He acts like everything is common sense and the exams are beyond difficult. At least 5 people I knew dropped from the 30 person lecture. DONT TAKE HONORS OCHEM
Organic Chemistry is a difficult topic, so don't expect this class to be a breeze, but I enjoyed it overall. Dr. Merner is a great professor, but can go fast in his lectures. He prepares you with practice exams and quizzes and he does review sessions going over the answers. You will do fine if you do practice problems, and understand the processes.
I had to do lots of work outside of class to really understand the material because he goes through lectures VERY fast. He doesn't give any practice material or homework, so it can be easy to get lost in the amount of content. However, his practice exams were very similar to his real ones. It forces you to really understand the content of the class
Dr. Merner is an incredibly intelligent guy but he struggles to get down to the level of an ochem I student in class. He teaches very fast and at a high level, so be prepared to do a good bit of work outside of class to understand what he's saying. Lectures aren't mandatory, but it seriously helps to read the material and attend lectures.
Do not take this course with this professor, I think this course stared with about 65 students, at the end there might have been 20-30 left. The average for every exam was like 40-60, there are no grades but quizzes and exams on the hardest possible examples of every single thing we were taught. I had to drop. Run, don't walk away from this one.
I loved this class! Merner lectures fast. DO THE HOMEWORK. Its not graded but practice practice practice saved me. Ochem is hard in general but Merner is a very kind grader and scaled often. He is very hard to reach via office hours sometimes. Just email him constantly. He is really nice and funny and also wants his students to do well. Take him!
