Sort of opinionated and stubborn. Has a tendency to offend some students with his views on certain topics. He'll make you think and you'll rarely be bored in his class.
Pretty easy class. The teacher makes a lot of offensive comments though.

the internet thing was a breeze...easy to have a friend do here and there...recommend over Schaefer from Spring Semester.
Very opionated...gets you to think..but assumes none of us think or make decisions on our own
Yes, he is opinionated and offensive at times, but he will apologize if you tell him you're offended. Warning: avoid Dr. Phelps at all costs if you are a devout Christian or Creationist. Anyway, he is a fabulous professor who makes even the dullest stuff fascinating. And the class is super-easy.
He tends to think he knows more than everyone. Does not like being challenged, but does a good job of presenting class material. He is a weird guy, and will keep you awake during class- usually.
You will hate him as a teacher, but it is an easy 'A'. If you do all the post-tests and go to class, you should be able to average a 'C' on the tests and still get an 'A'.
Wildly arrogant and self-centered, but still a good teacher.
OPinionated but well informed. KNows his****! If you don't want to be provoked into actually thinking, stay away
He has offended me more than once, and is very very opinionated! He know what he's talking about but I probably wouldn't take one of his classes again.
Excellent professor, very helpful and approachable, and a nice guy if you try to get to know him. If you intend to do well, plan on going to class. Tests can be a bit confusing in this class, but extra credit points more than make up for it.
I cannot stand this man. He is two faced and likes to make people feel bad whenever he can! He does know what he is talking about when it comes to Psychology but other than that I really can't stand him!
LOVED THE CLASS!!! Phelps got me interested in psychology....it i wasnt in love with kids i would switch my major.
Dr. Phelps is a great teacher, he may be pompous at times but hes a good teacher, if you are willing to work hard he will be glad to help you.
Dr Phelps is great. He maybe a little on the cocky side sometimes, but hes funny. Some points of his class are challening while others are not. The post tests are easy points. GO TO CLASS studetns who attend will get attendance points. He is very passionate about his the sujbect which is respectable.

excellent
Strange
Phelps is the man. His class is very interesting and he loves what he does. Go to class and get free attendance points
Strange, likes to yell, arrogant attitude, but he's okay. He his knows psychology well.
You might disagree with him or think he's cocky, but Phelps is a very good professor. Go to class, especially on Fridays before 3 day weekends.
Dr. Phelps is awesome, I love it when he speaks his mind. I feel that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Most do not like Phelps based on his views, but you can not prove him wrong on anything. If he isnt 100 percent sure about something he'll let you know.
I absolutely enjoyed his class. He would speak his mind and I liked that. He really made me interested in psychology. His class is really easy if you do the post tests and attend class. His class was awesome!

What can I say? Phelps made me think crtically about some claims. He changed my life for the better. I will always thank him for that. I enjoyed every minute of his class. If you aren't easily offended and actually have an open mind, take his classes. If you are easily offended and don't like to look at an issue from a different angle BEWARE walk!
I idolize this man! Not only is Dr. Phelps an awesome professor, but also, if you try to get to know him, you'll see that he's a really, really nice person. He tries very hard to help all of his students and he's generous to a fault. Any class I have of his somehow ends up being my favorite.
Very interesting class. You will laugh. Go to class, take notes and give it some effort and you'll have at least a B. TAKE IT, hes alot better than Shaffer.

Pretty cool guy. He brings up some interesting topics that make you think.
He was a very interesting and knowledgable professor. His tests were difficult at times, but his class is well worth your time.
He's very.. interesting.
He makes you work but if you want to learn something... this is your guy.
Dr. Phelps is a very outspoken man and he is very good at teaching pscyhology. His tests, even at the 100 level, are tough. Going to class is your best ticket to getting an A in this class. However, if you are a person who gets offended easily, you might want to find a different professor for psychology.
Dr. Phelps is the best teacher at sdsu. He makes every class enjoyable and interesting. you learn alot from his class.
Phelps is EXCELLENT. Does care about his psychology students, even when coming with problems that do not involve him. Phelps is difficult to get along with if you offend easily, but he does care. Test are difficult, and he does expect a lot from his students but will go an extra mile to help you succeed in his class.
The best teacher ever!
He so arrogant and refuses to listen to anyone but himself. He not respectful and thinks if you don't have his beliefs you are an idiot!
I love Phelps, at first I didn't think too highly of him, but now I love him! He does go that extra mile for you to pass, and do well, in his class as long as you put some effort into it.
Dr. Phelps was not very helpful. He always changed due dates without informing students. He is not scared to give you a 0 on anything. Overall, he didn't seem to care if we got the information, but just to get through the material.
Like so many of you, I was surprised about his personality. However, caution: It is his game. He is the only one with the right to offend others or try to be humorous. He will take you down if you try to return the favor. He will get you to think out of the box, but has zero tolerance at thinking outside his own.
I'll be honest. I was super scared of him at first. But if you want to learn he is one of the best to learn from. He certainly has his own perspectives, and there is a good chance he will offend you. However, we're adults. If you are studying psychology you best study more than one perspective of each subject. If you're lazy don't take his class.
The only thing challenging about his class is sitting through it without screaming.
Dr. Phelps is a great teacher if you want to learn what he is teaching. If you are eager about the subject, and are willing to learn and ask questions he will help you. If you really don't care, then take it with someone else.
If he offends you, you might be stupid and you should drop out of college and go raise a baby and work the land.
Dr Phelps is one of a kind, and one can learn a lot from him if he/she puts forth the effort. He may be forward with some of his beliefs, but they are his and you are entitled to your own. His strange stories and humor can turn the most boring topics interesting. You either love him or hate him, but he don't care, he is there to do a job.
Pretty great professor. Enter the room with an open mind to his character and eccentric personality, and show up for clicker points. Reading the book is a must, and he E-mails regularly.
Makes my day, everyday! Such a unique guy, no one could replace him!
Such a great professor; he is very helpful, entertaining, and makes the class interesting. If you give him a chance and get to know him, you may come to find that he is such a sweetheart!
Best professor on that campus of SDSU.. he could make any topic extremely interesting.. and his opinions are strong but they are definitely valued! He is amazing!! LOVE HIM!!!!!
Dr. Phelps is extremely helpful, entertaining, and makes any subject matter fascinating. Going to his classes becomes something you look forward to.. That takes a brilliant professor to make that happen. All professors need to be more like him...! Students NEED to give Phelps a chance.
SO ANIMATED! Excellent teacher - I was genuinely disappointed whenever we had no class, because attending lecture is a treat. PSYC 451 requires textbook reading because of the mass of material to be covered, but even that was so interesting that it was no bother. IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE, DEFINITELY TAKE BRADY PHELPS - a weird and wonderful teacher.
Dr. Phelps is a brilliant guy. At first, he's terrifying. If you're going to walk into class a minute late, don't bother coming because he will call you out in front of everyone and it's really awkward. If you don't get something, he will make you feel stupid, but that's just the way he is. He's a good professor and doesn't tolerate laziness.
Lectures are long and could benefit from being more concise, expect rambling personal stories that can be distracting. Dr. Phelps is certainly a very intelligent man but is often offensive and it's clear he could care less if you are in fact offended. I recommend taking classes from another professor.
I would not recommend this professor. He often teaches his opinion and is very offensive. The content is very interesting but should be backed up by scientific fact, not his opinion on the matter. He even says his opinion on religion!
Great teacher, a little out here but that is what makes him a him I guess. If you show interest or direction in your schooling is will help you. You have to want to help yourself... if you can't do that and you just want to breeze by then forget about it. You're not worth the effort.
If you're lazy, don't expect any sympathy. He is willing to go the extra mile for students who show ambition. He fostered my professional development the most. Take L&C and BMod. Those are the most useful classes you'll take in the major. You will learn FUNCTIONAL topics that apply across disciplines. Lastly, get APA style writing down. Just do it.
Great professor , lazy students stay away. Ask him about his dream where he is flying and he witnesses a corvette directly in front of him. This guy is the best.
Not clear at all, all you do is listen to him rant and insult the class
He is amazing. He may say things that offend sensitive people, but these are usually jokes and he means well. If you are lazy, you won't do well in the class and if you don't show up to class, you will struggle with tests. He goes the extra mile to help his students achieve and really cares about what he teaches. Definitely my favorite professor!
Dr. Phelps' classes are incredibly refreshing because you can tell without a doubt he is passionate about the material. He isn't afraid to share his personal experiences with the class as long as it means teaching us something. While he may be a bit... strange... it makes for an entertaining class.
Okay, so he is absolutely brilliant but also absolutely insane. He knows what he's talking about and it's obvious he's a professional in his field. I just wish he was a little more clear in lectures and break things down rather than using his professional tone during lectures. Make sure to study, your grade will be revolved off of quizzes and exams
Really keeps things real
Favorite professor! He is incredibly knowledgeable & passionate about the subjects he teaches! His tests are probably the hardest I've taken from any professor, so be sure to prepare & go to class as often as possible. He may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I have taken many of his classes simply because I find his lectures so enjoyable.
If you don't show up, be prepared to fail every test and even if you do show up, you better study the material and go over the book and Mindtap. I wish he would be more specific with some topics, but I know he is trying to cover everything he wants to get covered.
The class was very easy and kind of fun. Phelps's teaching methods are pretty straight forward, he likes to tell jokes too. He can be kind of intimidating, he called out a student for starring at his fingernails for too long one day so make sure to be paying attention during class or be pretending to pay attention.
Dr. Phelps is a one of a kind professor! He cares so much about his student's and their grades, and he only wants to see them succeed. If you choose to do poorly in his class, then that's exactly it, it's on you and your poor choices. He makes class interesting and is always prepared. Very knowledgeable and wants his students to only gain.
He's crazy, but in a good way.
Phelps takes his teaching very seriously and is very passionate about it. Because of this his lectures are always interesting, he cares about getting to know his students, and he also takes it quite personally if students don't care or try in his class (bad test or phones in class). Overall, Phelps is a little kooky but definitely a great teacher.
He teachers very fast and the content of the class is a lot to take in. Make sure you know you stuff at least a little bit before you take his class or you won't survive. Make friends and share notes!!! I also recommend printing the powerpoint slides and take notes on them as he goes.
He goes over a lot of information very quickly, but there are a lot of points in the class; so even if you do poorly on a test, some of the freebie points will cancel it out. DO NOT SKIP THIS CLASS. There is a lot of info you are missing out on if you do.
Phelps is the best professor at SDSU. Yes, his humor isn't for everyone but he will definitely keep your attention! Some think he has a tough exterior, but he's really a very caring guy. He wants all of his students to succeed and will do whatever he can to make sure they do. Ask questions and enjoy this guy! Hands down one of the best humans ever.
Dr. Phelps is hands down one of the top professors at SDSU. He can be hard to read, especially if sarcasm is not your strong suit. He definitely shares his opinion, but not because he want's you to share it, but to understand his background and methodology. He wants all of his students to succeed and truly cares. Hard exterior, softy on the inside.
This professor is one of the worst ones that I've had attending this university. He in several times shown signs of being immature and quite frankly a terrible teacher, he doesn't rely on any other forms of teaching than humiliating students and long lectures which personally I find very ineffective. I feel like he has failed us as students.
Phelps is hands down one of the best professors. If you fall asleep in class, maybe you deserve some attention from Phelps. But I am just one person who is grateful for how much I learned from Phelps, the rest of the whiny people who complain should go to a community college
(451,305,358) I've taken 2 in person, and 1 online with him. If you care, he cares about you. If you memorize all chapter quiz questions, you'll do well on tests. If you are easily offended by semi controversial humor, you'll hate him. He's also my advisor, I love the guy. I feel terrible every time I let him down, because I know he cares so much.
In Psyc 451,Phelps is tough, as usual. I disagree with the other kid who crapped all Phelps for this course. The other rating sounds like it came from a person wanted to blame Phelps for a poor exam grade. This guy knows his tuff
Super awesome guy. He can come off as pretty intimidating to some but he's one of the nicest people I've met. He cares about the material and his students. Respect him and class time, you will do great.
Use the study guides and notes he provides. The main things you get graded on are book work (quiz and terms each chapter), quizzes in d2l for each chapter, and 3 major tests covering 4-5 chapters each. You also have a few discussion posts. As long as you put in a bit of effort, this class should be easy.
Phelps thinks he is hilarious and likes to make fun of his students. He often says "if you'll let me say that" after having said something offensive. He told our class that "depressed people cannot ever be happy". The class was easy but he as a person is not enjoyable at all
Class was asynchronous so he had recorded lectures that he had clearly been using for multiple years because the events he referenced were old. Overall class was very easy but Phelps was not the reason why I learned anything
Often says semi offensive or off color things and then says "if you'll let me say that" even though the class used prerecorded lectures. Often said "This is a 400 level course so you should be treating it like a 400 level course" even though the class was not super difficult. Lots of material to cover in a summer online.
His class was all online because of covid and only had voice overs on powerpoints, never any lectures. Most of the class was just reading the textbook, each page took about an hour if you took notes. Even after reviewing the textbook and notes, exams were very difficult. The only reason I did well in this class is because he offered extra credit.
Very unprofessional. Does not put effort into teaching. Very disrespectful.
Lots of tests and lockdowns. Not given as much time as I would like to read the chapters.
