Very Hard Bio professor. She makes it fun and interesting.
She is a just OK teacher who has respect for her students and tries to help them out where ever and when ever she can. She is also one of HOTTEST teachers, scratch that, women I have ever seen.
Absolutely gorgeous and very nice. Lectures are interesting because she is interested and enthusiastic- Very down to earth and did I mention gorgeous?
too many assignments. labs go way late past 3 hrs. her tests hav tons of material. the CLASS' average (not my avg.) was a 62. shes anal retentive, her intro 100 level course is a fraud! it was one of my hardest classes DONT TAKE IT

Professor Van Roo was a wonderful teacher in lecture. I liked her great attitude toward everything and she's the nice lady ever !!! I hope to take another one of her courses !!!
The hardest FSC class, period. Great professor who had rough spots early, shaking out just fine now. Oh, and she is very easy on the eyes...
best teacher at FSC. respects all students and is always willing to help students in her office hours, after class and by email. a hard teacher, but she makes it fun and interesting. she is well organized and a fair grader.
van roo is the best. bio concepts was very challenging but she has to be one of the smartest professors at FSC. she's also one of the funniest. i almost wish i failed bio concepts so i could take her course again!
She is extremely nice and very helpful, but she is a tough grader! I would take a class with her again.

even as a bio major i fear her, sometimes very cold and intimidating(plus shes hot). she is extremely smart, an impossible grader, and expects everyone to be better than there best. if you like having an extremely challenging and damn good lecture professor take a class with her, otherwise forget it
I am horrible in bio. But she made things very clear by using icecream/shoes as examples. She is a fair teacher. As long as you study and go to class you will do well with her as your lecture prof. The material is hard and she makes things a lot easier.
The easiest of my three bio profs last semester. She's great. Not bad to look at either.
Class isnt bad but alot of info. She keeps me awake in class so two thumbs up. She is very animated.
This professor is an AWSOME professor! She keeps the entire class on their toes and makes class so much fun. She always has a perfect example and is so animated. She makes class so interesting. Take good notes, which isn't that hard, and the tests are a breeze. Her tests are straight off material we go over in class and to the point!
Van Roo was incredibly helpful and one of the best professors I have had so far at FSC. She pushes you to succeed and uses real life examples to explain subject matter. She has an awesome personality and is young so she which helps in relating to her students..Highly recommended.
Class taken over the summer. Extremely difficult and graded very hard, no scale (almost whole class in "C" range) Otherwise, good teacher and very enthusiastic.

Class taken over the summer. Very difficult grader although a very nice person and enthusiastic teacher. She makes bio semi-fun. I do not recommend taking her over the summer as she tries to cram every full semester's detail into 5 weeks. Otherwise, I would recommend her

Very hard, but I learned a ton!
One word to describe Dr. Van Roo: HORRIFYING! She sets too high of a standard for her students in this gen. ed. class. Avoid if possible.
Very interesting class. There's a lot to learn. She uses every minute of class time. Lab was a bit tedious, sometimes fun.
The course material and labs were awesome, but she is a very tough grader which brought down my confidence in some areas. However, very easy to talk to and always willing to help.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Never have I studied so hard. Lets just say, before this class I had a 4.0...she changed that. I studied for DAYS for each exam and went to her for extra help almost every class. She is very clear and organized during class but it is IMPOSSIBLE to meet her expectations. Do not take Bio with her!
Ridiculous teacher!! Run out of the room and take another science class unless you MUST take this course. I have gotten all A's before this class, but her attention to detail makes it hard for anyone to follow all of her rules. If you like to wear sandles or have ever forgotten a book do not take this class!!!!
Ubelievably hard class!!! I don't think you could study enough and pass this class. The standards she sets are very unreachable. Horrible class overall I would not recommend this class with her or any for that matter!
Agree with other statements - unreachable goals and very arrogant.
For someone who was absolutely not looking forward to taking Bio, I didn't think this class was too horrible. It was very boring, but it was basically a review of high school bio. The tests were challenging and you really do have to go to class or you'll be lost. Van Roo is nice and helpful, but intense.
Van roo was AWFUL! her lecture is upbeat but she's confusing! She lies about giving extra credit so be careful! Dont rely on her saying u get those +5 points added to ur total grade becuz she jipped our class! I would have had a B+ instead i ended up with a B-. She grades lab reports really hard cuz she was once an english major..so watch out
She is very hard but is very upbeat during lecture and is funny. You do need to go to every class and pay attention. Her and the rest of the bio department are very helpful
Most Crystal Clear Class I have Ever Taken. Great Teacher.
Very clear and blunt about what she wanted and what she expects. But she is extremely arrogant and grades hard. When writing lab reports, she'll call anything plagiarism.
I took Bio Concepts over the summer in the five week course. It is a very intense class. You rarely get out of your 5 hour 15 minute lectures early. Be prepared to work hard. She is a very clear teacher but very challenging. There is no possibility of coasting through her class. She is very nice and very helpful.
very fair, tough grader especially on presentations and lab reports. Constructive criticism. No sympathy
She is very nice and always willing to help you. Her lectures are very clear and understandable. She covers a lot of material in each class so if you miss a lot you are screwed! She is insanely hard grader on lab reports. tests are multiple choice and mostly fair but she often throws questions at you from left field. Expectations not always clear.
she's crazy. She thinks everyone should be a bio major and the tests are impossible. Try your hardest to not be in her lab.
Fun lectures, she really loves what she does and is teaching. My first impression was that she was just a beautiful face but her mind in amazing. But beside the fact that she is extreamly smoking hot, and would look amazing in just about anything, I learned so much from her. She is not easy and has high expectations of her students.
This rating pertains to organismal biology 142. This course is very, very difficult for intro bio majors and should not be taken by anyone who is not a bio major. She is very strict when it comes to notes and her quizzes and tests are nothing short of impossible to do well on. She knows her stuff and is very enthusiastic but you literally have to d
Quizzes and tests do not reflect her class notes. She doesn't say exactly what will be on her exams and she expects you to be studying the material as if this is the only class you are taking. Says she will dish out bonus points, but doesnt. Expects you to always be on time, and she usually isnt herself. Oh, and she is an impossibly hard lab grader
she is so funny and really tries to help her students.
Van Roo is a funny, smart, nice professor.. Knows her stuff better than any science teacher I've ever had... She will go to the ends of the Earth to help you, but sometimes that won't even be enough... Trying my best to stay above water in terms of her tests... AVOID HAVING FOR LAB!!!!!!!
Very Funny Teacher. Great Class
Class is very interesting and fun if she's actually teaching. She wastes a lot of time trying to be tough by sermonizing about how we should be studying/taking notes, etc. Maybe some people need the wake-up call, but I'm already a good student, so I'm here to learn, not to be treated like I'm 13. I've only had one quiz so far, and it was fair.
Very fun & interesting Class! Her lectures are crystal clear and on point! However, her class is not a walk in the park! Put forth effort and good studying habits! I really learned information that will last me a lifetime! Take her :)
Dr. Van Roo makes it very clear what she expects from you. She is tough but she's not going to throw tricks at you. She tests you on exactly what she taught. She is also really energetic and keeps lecture interesting. She's very friendly and is willing to help anyone.
I was disappointed on all the analyzing birds and individual biological micro events without ever explaining how the conscious thought process used to analyze these events is generated in the first place. I learned more about the study of life taking philosophy.
Dr. Van Roo is a great professor! While her tests may seem difficult, they really aren't. If you study for her class on a normal basis you will do fine! If you need help she is always available for extra help. Wildlife is her passion and hopefully it is yours too when you take this class. It was by far my favorite class! :-)
Short and Sweet: Would not take again if my degree depended on it, but learned a lot about myself and the course material. Extended: Very smart, really knows her stuff and is passionate, but the tests are too hard. Average for large class was a C-. Syllabus grading makes sense, but test grading seems unfair. Really cool stuff taught though.
She is amazing, nice, really energetic and passionate about the material. Though she is a tough grader and wants you to be active in every class. Tests can be a bit confusing, but if you study, you can get them right.
Very smart lady and knows what she is talking about. You have to go to class to get a good grade and you have to actually listen very closely. Her tests are very hard and require a lot of studying. She doesn't give much homework other than pre-labs and her labs always last the full 3 hours or more. Her class takes a lot of time out of your life.
This class is impossibly hard. I ended up dropping out of it because she expects you to study like this is the only class you're taking. insanely hard tests and grader and the labs always go for the full time sometimes even more. Tests make no sense and shes impossibly hard for lab. I switched my major from bio after this. Thanks a lot van roo
She is much harder than the other professors teaching this class, but if you enjoy biology youll enjoy this class with her.
Hard course, but an awesome teacher. You get graded most on exams, which are very hard, but if you pay attention and take good notes you'll be fine.
She is a tough grader, yes, she has very high expectations but that is because she is a really good professor. You learn so much from just one semester with her, and she is very thorough when explaining concepts. She is one of the most passionate/present professors I have ever had. Very inspiring, I am a senior in college and she is my role model.
She has very high expectations, but it is going to make you so much better. Her tests are very hard so study groups and effective studying are crucial to passing. Show up and take good notes. She is so passionate and makes everything in her class interesting
I love her so much! She is very smart and extremely passionate about what she teaches. She is a super fair grader and gives you all the material you need in lecture. Her exams are a little hard at times but you can always find the answer in your notes, so no trick questions. She is also available outside of class often.
Dr. Van Roo is an angel. She is so knowledgeable and she really cares about what she does. She does expect a lot from you and is a tough grader, but it makes you a better student! She is very clear about grading, clear with feedback, and very responsive when you reach out to her. She's my favorite!
Do not take this class. She is very nice as a person but expects a lot from students. Material is not difficult but she is a very hard grader and expects answers to be very precise. She does not give out homework therefore she wants students to study notes after every lecture so expect pop quizzes at least once a week.
I thought she was overall an awesome professor! She is very thorough in her explanations. Be aware that she expects that same comprehension on exams. Study your notes via fill in the blank/ re-writing them without looking and you should do well.
Brandi Van Roo is very caring, however, the amount that she expects from first-year students is ridiculous. Taking this course for credit I understand that it is difficult but it should not be a rated a 160 level course. Be prepared for lots of notes and she will literally stress to you how much you need to study.
Our class average on our tests were usually in the mid 50's, and she saw nothing wrong with that. This, however, was a very common trend in previous semesters as well. She will repeat things one time, verbally, in class and expect you to know it perfectly. While this is an intro class, she expect you to be a biologist in every aspect.
She was nice at times, but other times she is unnecessarily rude. She also does not understand that people learn at different paces; she expects you to memorize everything right away. I would expect this in a higher-level course, but not as the first course required for Biology majors.
no more pressure
she just pay attention to those students that she likes , the rest is in trash .
lectures are confusing , and grades are very low
Very sad that why I didn't withdraw this class. she is very rude to some of students .
She is the hardest teacher I have had in my 5 years of higher ed. She does not listen to students, has a terrible grading system where she give you what she feels like not what the rubric says. If you have accommodations do not take her. Dont be fooled by that picture of her with the bird like I was. Heed these warnings and do not take her!
This was my favorite class at FSU! Lots of discussion and short ports, with a few Simone quizzes. Grading was very fair and I learned so much about what issues affecting Massachusetts wildlife. Anyone with a concentration in Wildlife Bio should
I took a Bio class that had professors switch on/off depending on what subject was taught. Van Roo was up and I was shocked by the way she introduced herself to the class. Verbatim, I do not care if you pass or fail this class because I still get paid at the end of the day. I had no respect for her. The tests are difficult and long.
Take pictures of your quizzes to study from for final bc you cannot access them. Hard grader with the worst feedback that she thinks is adequate or helpful. Meanwhile what she writes is just saying it is wrong, rather than offering a reason why. I always felt that I could never do anything right in her eyes, and was never capable enough for her,
Dr.Van Roo is knowledgeable on the topic but has high expectations. She doesn't tell you what was missed in class / give access to slides if you are absent. Tests are difficult. She expects that you study your notes outside of class everyday. If you put in the effort, she's a good teacher but you can't not put effort in if you want to pass.
she will only grade u on test and quizzes. listennnn do not take her class if you can finesse and not take it then do not take it. like no. just no.
This is the worst teacher I have had in all of my academic experiences. Which accounts for school, coaches, and any other activity I may have had a teacher. Unfortunately for some majors, he classes gate keep your ability to get your degree. So you will have to take her. My advice is to make th easiest schedule possible to account for her class
taught well but a little bit strict
She's wonderful and clearly passionate about biology, but she can be quite the tough grader. If you skip class regularly you won't pass. You should take lots of notes, or have an accommodation for a notetaker because she lectures quite a bit. If you have to miss class, ask a friend for the notes AND go to her office hours.
